I saw that at first and my brain was like, yeah, you know that, that scene in oh God, the Hangover where it's, oh, don't do this to me. Mike is just staring at my face.
B
Well, because you were. It was starting out to be the open of the podcast, but do you.
C
Know what I'm talking about? The Hangover when. What's that guy's name?
D
Is this the Open.
C
No, don't do this to me.
B
Don't we have our own.
C
No, don't do that to me.
D
Good job, Jenna.
C
All right, welcome back to the Buffalo plus channel, presented by Connors and Ferris. Mike Catalana, Dan Fates. I am Jenna Cotrel. Please be sure to, like, comment, subscribe and share. We always appreciate it. All right, we're recording this on Tuesday at 5:26. The bills announcing their roster moves. Is today NFL roster cut down Day. Mike, what is your initial takeaway?
B
A few surprises, I would say. I thought Daquan Hardy was going to be on the roster. I thought he was going to be the kick returner. And here not only do they release him, they go out and make a trade with the Jets. They hadn't made a trade since 1937 with the Jets. Not quite that, but it's been.
D
You were covering the team then, weren't you?
B
Oh, that was funny. You see, because I'm old. And then he made the joke. You shouldn't laugh so much at that.
C
I was actually laughing with you.
B
But they made a trade to bring in a kick returner, so they obviously, at least initially, don't have that feeling for Hardy. I thought he was going to be. There's some other places here that are surprises. Certainly a tight end. I thought maybe there was a chance Zach Davidson would be on the regular roster, but I would say that one stuck out to me because that is specifically basically a starting position. I consider kick returner a starting position. Making that move.
D
And it was a bunch of different options I felt the bills had between K.J. hamler, Daquan Hardy and some of Those other pieces. So. So to go outside the organization and in the. Outside the building. Not inside the building. Go outside the building to the Jets. To the Jets. That was a surprise. Carrying only five wide receivers is a good sign for the health, I think, of both Curtis Samuel as well as mbs. I know what you're saying. All of these guys, they want to bring back on the practice squad and you can elevate a guy for a game day. I understand all that concept. But to only have five on the active roster of 53 is a little bit surprising to me. I thought Tyrell Shavers did enough to make that spot again. All of this, Jenna, as we like to say, is a fluid situation right now.
C
Yes.
D
So as we record this, if you're watching this Wednesday or Thursday, we may. There may be different players that are already on the team because of how many new free agents there will be in the waiver wire.
C
Yeah. So the waiver while wire will be on Wednesday. So that can kind of again make things a little bit more fluid, a little bit different because there's going to be more names being released, more guys that could possibly be coming into Buffalo. You would have to cut someone to make room for them on your active roster. So this is a very fluid situation.
D
We have gone, I think now, three minutes into this, Buffalo. Joanne, the legend lives on in Buffalo. Making the 53 man roster for now.
B
And listen, I think he earned that spot. Yeah, he played well when he had his moment. He was really good in Pittsburgh. Not maybe not quite as good. Different circumstances and I think they wanted him there. The 53 man thing is for right now, because we know that he could be one of those guys that if he gets let go, could come back on the practice squad. I think they were certainly concerned about that. I think they wanted him, he earned it. And if they let him go, I think they believed someone would claim him. So they don't have to worry about that for now. We don't know what's going to happen the next day. It also depends who's available. You know, they may say not necessarily a linebacker to replace them. We're talking about maybe a different quarterback or a wide receiver to replace him. And I'm just. And it's not just Buffalo Joe here. This is where, you know Ross Tucker, who played for the Bills, he talked about it. He goes, when you're in this spot, nobody calls you to tell you you're on the team. They call you, you're to tell you you're getting cut.
D
Yeah.
B
But it's sort of like you don't want to. Nobody called me and I'm there. But I think they all realize that while it's fluid, they obviously like this guy. They want him on the 53. He's going to be a Buffalo Bill in one form or another. At least that would be my impression. But you never know what happens the next couple of days.
C
It really is an incredible story though.
B
Yeah.
C
For him to have a tryout in May and then go to camp, I feel like we were all, were kind of like, oh, that's cool. Like a western New York native. Like, like what an amazing story. Like he's here, he's at training camp, he's at fiser. And then to see him play well, had his name, notice, have those flashes, have the, the entire community was already rallying around him. But to see the experience that he got and like his play potential, that to me was, is incredible. And then you add on him at this point being on the 53 man roster, it really is such a, I don't want to say a unique experience because you sometimes see this across the league, but what an amazing story.
B
No, go ahead. You say it across the league, but we're not talking about undrafted free agents.
D
Well, this isn't from Alabama. This isn't from Clemson. This is from Buffalo.
B
But not only from Buffalo, but he was a tryout guy. Yeah, this wasn't even, hey, draft's over. We're going to bring the guy in. He didn't get that. He had to try out three UB bills on the 53 right now.
C
That's cool.
D
And Jen, just to your point where you talked about, oh, this is a cool kind of story. I remember in the Bears game he had a tackle in the fourth quarter and I looked over at our friend Dom Tibbets, first team, all hair, great head of hair guy. And I remember and we kind of like smirked like, there's your Joe Andreessen file. Like there's your video clip that you'll have of Joe Andreessen having no idea what would still develop in that story. From the Bears game where he played in mop up duty to starting the next week to then being, you know, this training camp darling that has earned it. It wasn't just, this wasn't the Christian way touchdown run where you went, oh, that was a really cool moment. But like he's never going to play in an NFL game.
B
Honestly, it wasn't even quite like Frank Gore Jr. Who was really good.
D
Right.
B
I mean I felt figured they would release him. And I think he has a shot to be on the practice squad and maybe someday to play. He, he showed a lot to the point where, I mean, you're talking about on the 53 man roster with this team. I think that in itself is incredible for where he was and what they expect out of their linebackers.
D
Yeah.
B
He proved to them not only can he play, but he knows how to call the defense. Right. I think that is really a big sign. That's why testament to him a 1000% he got that chance. And imagine what he was thinking when he was starting that second game.
D
You were going to do Eminem again.
C
No, I wasn't.
D
You were thinking.
C
I, I looked at you because I was going to and I, I decided not to.
B
Yeah. And you could call me out if I don't know. And I'm one for one, so let's leave it there. I got Eminem in the last one, so.
D
But to your point, that one chance, Eminem line away, but the fact of guys like Justin Shorter and Tyrell Shavers, they, they had chances and didn't really do enough.
C
I was kind of surprised by the Tyrell Shavers, Justin Shorter, I thought, okay, you know, we had him going into this preseason of being like, you know what, this is his shot. He's, he's got the speed he had. The injury last year was essentially like a red shirt year. What can he do this summer? And then to see Tyrell Shavers kind of take over McDermott, talking about him so highly in the way that he did. When I think of consistency, I picture Tyrell Shavers like, that's pretty incredible for your head coach to say. And whether it be the almost touchdown that Ben Denucci threw, whatever the reasoning behind that, I, I was expecting in my head, I was like, tyrell Shavers will be on the 53 man roster. That to me was someone. I was like, oh, and that was a cut that happened earlier on or was reported earlier on in the day.
D
Shout out to Jobiscalia of the Athletic. He talked, he had tweeted about when they got down, they cut KJ Hamler, they cut Shavers, they cut Shorter, they cut Deon Kane, and. And they're going with five wide receivers, which was again some of a surprise because we usually think about six. Joe pointed out, and you know, credit to his tweet that the Bills had kept six at cut down day. The next day they placed Shorter on IR and they went with five the rest of the season. A little bit of different circumstances in the sense of you had Diggs, you had Gabe Davis, you had. You had pieces that you knew what they were. This is still trying to figure out what the utensil drawer is at this point of the season. So that's, I think, where I was a little bit surprised because I thought this may be the year where you keep six and maybe you rotate the six more.
B
I think that's how they end up on the practice squad. I don't think the 6 wide receiver is even active for a game. If they would have kept them on the 53, that's fair. They'll keep these guys on the practice squad. If you are Tyrell Shavers, as good as he was, you have to do what Joe Andreessen did, at least for now. Make it that they can't cut you or don't. Can't. They don't believe that you'll be around. I think they believe he's going to be around tomorrow. We'll again, when you're listening to this, you may hear something. Otherwise, put him on the practice squad. The odd thing about the way the practice squad works, and we all know this is there's guys on the 53 who may not play in the first few games.
D
Right.
B
But a guy on the practice squad might.
D
And that's all been. That's all new.
B
Yeah, I think it's great for the league. I wish all those guys got full salaries because they don't. Because it's about a $700,000 difference for what Tyrell Shavers would make on a practice squad and what Joe Andreessen makes on a 53.
D
Right.
B
It's a lot of cash for those guys. But in terms of roster flexibility, if you got five healthy wide receivers and they're going to play two tight ends a lot, we'll see what they end up doing there. I think it makes sense.
D
This is not an old person comment. This is just an experience comment. We were talking about this in the sports office before this.
B
I know.
C
Oh, yeah, okay.
D
This. We've only been covering the league for eight. This is going on our ninth year. Something like that. What was cut down day like in the 1930s.
B
You couldn't.
C
You couldn't resist.
D
I tried real hard.
C
You couldn't resist.
D
But what was. Obviously we're sitting on Twitter all day and just kind of scrolling, seeing when source. Source says this person. What was it like back in the day when.
B
Yeah, well, back in the day, Twitter was much better than it is now.
C
That's fair.
D
The pigeon came and dropped off.
B
It Was. First of all, it was multiple cuts.
D
That's right.
B
Because they would do that initial cut, those rounds. I think you guys even heard that. That wasn't that long ago, quite honestly, we would get facts with the moves they made. I mean, what else are they going to do back in that time? And it was not. Teams were not covered the same way they are now. Yeah, but the difference was, back when I first started covering the team, when you got cut, you got cut. Like, there was no practice squad at all. You were gone, and then you just tried to find your way onto another team in the case now, it's so different. It felt more final when a player was cut. Like, we all believe a good percentage of these guys are going on the practice squad could eventually get elevated. We'll play in games. Back in the olden days, it was, you're cut, you're done. And rarely did they come back. If they did, it was later in. Later in a season based on an injury, whatever, and the guy's not on any roster. So it's very different the way it is now. The communication of it is different, too.
D
There also, there was a donkey that brought in the.
B
Well, there wasn't the interest that it is now in every player on the roster. Yeah, it just was very different. So, you know, yes, the technology was very different, but we would probably make a phone call to a landline and they would answer and say, you know, ring the thing and get it. Mabel, connect me with the Buffalo Bills. Is that what you're saying? It was just different, but now you guys are all way more attuned to the entire roster. Coverage of training camp is a thousand times more than it was then, especially the daily stuff. So it was like, they'd make the cuts, guys would leave. This was your roster very, very different. I think the league is much better off with the big practice squads. I think it helps the players and it certainly helps the quality of play a thousand percent.
C
I agree. I think a lot of these guys will be back on the practice squad. I also. Today, Tuesday, I don't like. There's. There's so much fun covering this job, and it is so much fun. I don't like this day because for some of these guys, they will be ending their football careers. And I always try to put that in perspective because we look at, oh, this guy got cut, this guy got cut. And I'm like, no, for some of these players, this is the last time they'll play football.
D
So it's easy to make the jokes of, you Know Kadarius, Tony getting cut and things like that. And it's like, I just don't think today's the day to take shots at anybody losing their job.
C
Yeah.
D
Especially here. So.
C
Yeah, I, I agree, I agree.
D
That's, that's how we can talk about the.
B
When I think we see that. I was just gonna say we. You see it and obviously some of you do. You also too is see the work these guys have put into the families.
D
Are there and yeah, there every.
B
And they are hopeful. And yeah, even a guy like Frank Gore, when we talked to him the other day, he's like here, whatever happens here or wherever. And I hope for all these. I mean you want to see all of them have jobs in league because they've worked hard to get there.
C
Yeah.
D
Going off of the practice squad. That was when I picked Brandon Bean's brain.
B
Wow.
D
Got it.
C
Nailed it. Proud of you.
D
How important the practice squad is in the sense of you've already invested coaching resources, time into these players that you want to kind of keep them in your building. A guy like Tyrell Shafers, now that's up to them. If they want to stay on the. Like they could go to another practice squad if they want a fresh start. Kingsley, Jonathan, another guy that got cut that maybe he's just seeing it and going, I can't. I, I'm getting passed up here. I, I need a new start. New something that Isaiah Hodgins, I know he went on to the, the Giants 53 and played well over the last years there. But like guys that we think of, like, oh, like they'll just want to say in the practice squad. They may also want an opportunity to, to go elsewhere and things like that. But the point I was trying to make is that the practice squad is so valuable because you keep developing them in your system, in your under your tutelage, under your coaches, knowing the systems. All of those things where I think before maybe you were just looking for bodies, but like the way that they get elevated now up and down for game days like you. It is really an extension since COVID in the new practice squad.
B
Yeah.
C
Of the roster.
B
Of the roster. I always have thought the rosters are too small, there's too many injuries. I think it was unfair. I didn't like the way the league operated. I always feel like this league is too hard on its own players sometimes with the non guaranteed contracts, multiple fines. Does any other league, any league find their players as much as the NFL does when the guys wrong uniforms and every time there's a big ticky, tacky. They just. I feel like that it's in the.

B
It's a top down. Yeah, almost. And it's a tough life. And for everybody who's out there and says these guys make millions, there's a lot of guys on that 53 that are not making millions. Now I say that they're making $800,000 a year, but it's not all guaranteed and they could be gone in two weeks. And Joanne Treason is making that as of Saturday. But it might be for one week like it is. It is a hard life to live and it is constantly fighting for your spot. There's only maybe 30% of the league that should feel really secure.
C
Yeah.
B
And the rest of them, it's. It's tough. So you're right. Jenny, you said at the beginning this is a tough day for a lot of players, but hopefully they, maybe even in Buffalo they get these chances.
C
Yeah, we'll have to wait and see. Also, you said tutelage. Do you know how to spell that? That's the only big one. It's like, ooh, good word.
B
It was a good word.
D
T U, T U T.
C
U, T.
D
E. Can I get that?
B
Yeah, I know.
D
Origin.
C
Your brain.
B
Yeah, yeah.
C
L, A, G E. Yeah, sure.
B
Not really that tough.
C
It is spelling. But I just heard Dan say it and I was like, okay, that I gotta make.
B
She heard what you said.
C
Yeah, I listened.
D
There's clips on social that say otherwise.
C
Quarterback wise, Ben Denucci cut, obviously Anthony Brown was already cut. I think to me it's like, okay, what is the status end of Mitch Trubisky? That to me says that maybe he's trending in a better direction than I originally thought. But there's obviously still the opportunity for that, Jim.
B
I mean it could be and it, it might very well be. But there's also another way to look at it and say they feel like Ben Denucci's out there if they need him and he'll probably could come back on the practice squad. I don't know if their eyes are on any other quarterbacks.
D
And that's where. That's to your point.
C
Did we look up if Kyle Allen was cut?
B
I'll look it up here while you're listening.
C
But that's part of.
D
Well, that's part of what we're talking about. It's like you can, you know, Balin Spector made the team and Joe Andreessen. Like those could be guys cut. Not for like your point, Mike. It not just for a linebacker. You could be looking to fill that spot with a second quarterback, things like that.
B
Yeah.
C
Kyle Allen is on the Steelers initial 53.
B
Man, that's interesting. So they kept three.
C
Yeah.
D
Stashing. Stashing them.
B
Yeah.
C
Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Kyle Allen.
B
Yeah, that's. That's fun.
D
Real Murderers Row quarterback Wilson in it.
B
But anyhow.
C
That's right.
D
Dangerous.
B
Yeah. So. But in terms of having a quarterback, if Mitch is not ready, outside of Kyle Allen, if you went out and got another quarterback, somebody they liked, but he's new, I think Ben Denucci comes back and he's your backup for the first few weeks. Like how do you get you. You would need a guy who has at least been in. In the building a thousand percent and practice to be the backup. And there's two games in the first, what, four, five days of the season. So you better have somebody ready behind Josh. So we'll see. It is with Mitch. But if Denucci is on the practice squad, you could protect yourself to say Mitch isn't ready. You elevate him on game day.
C
That's true.
D
Because Mitch, again, we, we talked about it. We're not the only people that saw it. And it wasn't like we were sneaking behind doors in the building. Like Mitch had a noticeable limp walking out of the tunnel on last Saturday. And it's just surprising to think that he could be ready for game and he's not on the ir so it's not like he's, you know, you don't think it's four weeks, but.
B
But it's two weeks and like I said, two games in five days too. So you've. You've got to have somebody ready.
C
Yeah.
B
That Zach Davidson surprise you?
C
I wasn't surprised because I think it would be a lot for them to carry four tight ends and I think they really, really love Quinton Morri. But I think Zach Davidson did a decent job this summer of kind of advocating for himself to be on the practice squad. Once again or for another team to pick him up. I think it's hard because this team in particular, the tight end, like, it's hard to make the tight end room in this group because you have Dawson, you have Dalton Kincaid, obviously, so not surprised. But I think he had a nice summer, and I think we'll see if that means he lands with another team.
D
Yeah, I guess I had some fear that Quinton Morris's injury was bigger, that he could have landed on the ir. So I think that's a good sign. Again, where you're. You look at what moves weren't made as deciphering injury status and where they are moving forward with Mitch and with Quentin Morris. So I think that's a good sign. And Zach Davidson had an uphill climb because of the special teams that Quentin Morris provides. Like, he. He's a. He's a crucial special teams guy. And Davidson is much more of a poor man's Dawson Knox than he is a Quinton Morris. Like. Like just what. Just what they do. What was it look for?
C
That's like. I mean, you're not wrong. Just a poor man's Dawson.
D
But we've talked about it. If you want a tight end running a route and catching a pass, you. You have two better options than Zach. That's not a knock at Zach Davidson. It's just he.
C
It's a fact.
B
Yeah, he could have called him an ugly penny, that's true. But he did not.
D
I've done that before.
C
I thought you were gonna say, like a great value.
D
I think that's a little bit more insulting.
B
That's like, he's a.
D
He's a Cereal and bags.
B
He's a. He's a. He's a Kirkland, Dawson, Knox. Is that.
D
Now that's. That's better.
C
That's better. Yeah.
D
Kirkland's legit.
B
I would say for him, Zach, this is probably the worst roster he could be on. It's gotta be up there because Kincaid is a pass catcher, and Knox on a lot of other teams would be the number one pass catcher as a tight end, you know. You know a good percentage of them. And that's really what he does. I. I think he could find his way on to somebody's roster because he had put up the numbers and he's.
D
Still coming back from his acl. I think people asked, you know, he was talking after the game on Saturday, where do you think you are? He thought he did enough to make the 53. So did Tyrell Shavers. And just also the fact of Trying to compartmentalize that as they talk about the process and. And where you are along and not just where you stand on the roster, but he was coming back from an ACL injury and where he thinks his game is. So all that stuff plays into it with where you see yourself in the future, not only in this organization, but in the league.
B
I also wanted to mention Janet with safeties. You know, they cut Kendall Williamson, which I think would look like it was going to be the case, but they also cut Kareem Jackson. And the only reason. I mean, Kareem Jackson's been around a long time. 14 years in the league. But if you were really worried about having veterans on the field and the injuries, I think Kareem Jackson. Not a terrible guy to keep on the roster. Wouldn't it be kind of WILD if he's 15 years in the league and you end up on a practice squad? But I guess you could. We don't know what they'll do.
D
Leger Blunt did it.
C
I mean, they signed him late, though. I feel like maybe they thought that was Cambodi. Yeah, I think maybe they feel like if they need him, he'll be available.
B
Yeah, it could be. But.
D
Good sign for Bishop.
B
Bishop.
D
Good sign for Mike Edwards.
B
Yes.
C
Yes.
B
Because, by the way, when you look at that, Mike Edwards, the offensive lineman.
C
Oh, my God. I saw that at first, and my brain was like, yeah. You know that. That scene in. Oh, God, the Hangover, where it's. Oh, don't do this to me. Mike is just staring at my face.
B
Well, because you were. It was starting out to be the open of the podcast, but do you.
C
Know what I'm talking about in the Hangover when. What's that guy's name?
D
Is this the Open?
C
No, don't do this to me. Don't. What's the weird guy's name?
B
Zach Galifianakis.
C
Zach Galifianakis.
D
We have our opening.
C
No, don't do that to me.
D
Good job, Jenna.
C
I'm not high, I swear.
D
And roll the Open.
C
Do you know what I'm talking about, though, where they're like, yeah, going in front of his face? Yes, I know. Okay. You just left me out to dry.
B
We needed an open.
C
Oh, my God. I don't even remember what I was talking about.
B
Yeah, well, that's what happens when you.
C
No, it was not high. Not high.
B
Oh, now my mom's gonna be mad.
C
I would say thank you, Terry.
B
She gets mad when people say that about Janet.
C
I'm not. I am not.
B
She just couldn't Remember what she was saying?
C
I'm not. Look, my eyes are not red.
B
A little bit.
C
No.
B
Okay.
D
Okay.
C
All right. Who else? K.J. hamler.
B
Yeah.
C
Not. I wasn't really surprised. I just thought with the return game.
B
And by the way, what we saw was out there at wide receivers, if they were interested. I mean, there's a few players that.
C
Noah Brown.
B
I like Noah Brown a lot, like him a lot. And I think he plays on the outside.
D
I mean, so he was a vested veteran. So he goes instantly to the free agent. He does not have to clear waivers. He is a free agent. He can sign with whoever he wants. And again.
B
Okay, go ahead. You're fine.
D
Nope, nope. All done.
B
You're gonna find yourself for that. Yeah.
D
Yep.
B
It's because Dan says. And again, a lot. Yeah, we never repeat ourselves. No, it never happens.
D
Hair's on fire, though.
B
But I do like Noah Brown's skill set, and it's interesting. Houston's got a great.
D
It's interesting.
B
Oh, yeah, that was one of mine.
C
That's one of mine, too. You also say, listen. People say that.
B
I know, and I've guarded against it.
D
He just says that all the time.
C
It's not just a podcast without the camera here. He still says, listen, listen.
D
People came here for Bill's content.
C
Hey, there's a touchdown. It was in this end zone. Okay, okay, okay.
B
Back to Noah Brown. I like his skill set to play on the outside. It's been around the league, but it's interesting to think about. Does he like the setup in Buffalo? I have no idea whether he would be interested. They have five players. They have their room set up. It's about being an improvement over any of those guys.
C
I think that's fair because Noah Brown would want to have to sign in Buffalo. But I think if you looked at the wide receivers.
D
He's signed for a spot, right?
C
Yeah. I'm saying, like, if you look at the wide receivers, for him, I. I feel like I would be confident of, like, okay, this is a room that I can crack.
B
A veteran like that can sign onto a practice squad. I'm not saying he is initially because they're not clearing waivers. He's out there, so it doesn't have to be that. You have to put him on the 53. He can. There will be vested veterans who are. Kareem Jackson would be a good example who might very well be on a practice squad to get back in the league as a veteran.
D
Darrington Evans, Matt Milano and Travis Clayton placed on ir. Evans and Milano have been Designated to return.
C
That means Clayton's year is done.
D
Clayton's year is over.
C
Which he was more of a. What?
D
I'm not gonna say it.
B
So the. The tough part about, like, a project. No, no, no.
D
It was just somebody did. I mean, everybody did stories on him.
C
But I did a story on.
B
Some of them weren't good.
C
Yeah.
D
No, no, no, no. Jenna has a history where it just hasn't worked out.
B
That's right. Yes.
C
I was like, what? My story was fine.
D
I was like, are we not getting this inside joke that Jenna does stories on people and they get cut?
C
Or I did do a sit down with Zach Davidson.
B
That's true. But you also did.
D
Never air it. Never aired.
C
It didn't air.
D
Hey, we still got that one in the can, guys.
B
Yeah. You also did one last year with the wide receiver. Receiver. He just got cut.
C
Trent Sherfield.
B
Trent Sherfield just got cut.
D
This.
C
I did a sit down with Dwan Smoot.
D
He's on the team.
C
Yeah, yeah. But I'm saying, like, oh, man, we're.
B
Rooting for you, Dan.
C
No, the. The cur.
D
That was really awkward podcasting. I apologize. I thought we would all. I thought Mike would jump in on.
C
They were saying my story sucked. I was like, I actually, like.
B
I thought Dan was saying somebody else's story was bad. I nominate Brandon Codrington as the name most mispronounced by Bill's fans during the year.
C
No, people don't say dejuan Smoot's name. Right. Anyways, they say Dwayne.
B
That's a tough. Like, you can get Braden. It's not an easy name to say.
C
That's bad. Codrington.
B
Brandon Codrington.
C
Brandon Codrington.
B
Okay, now you made it sound easy.
D
Say he's another undrafted free agent that had three.
B
Four.
D
Three or four really nice returns. Returns and kick returns for the jets.
B
And the jets traded him. And when did the jets ever make a mistake? So.
D
Never.
B
Never. So we'll see. We'll see what ends up being. But they obviously were concerned about this, especially at the beginning of the year. So they have a kick. He's going to be their returner.
D
To me, that's a little bit of a surprise, because I know people commented that not only did Bass miss the field goal, he's had issues with the kickoff rule and landing zones and all those things. But we talked about before the season that teams were going to keep their special teams plans very close to the vest. So I don't know if Bass has, you know, tried to do anything that they've really planned on doing in the regular season. While you're trying to kind of keep everything hidden in the preseason. I thought that would kind of go for a turn game. So that was. I thought they liked what Hardy was doing in the return game. I thought you had other options. Ty Johnson's return kicks. I've seen Matt Collins return kicks. Cam KJ Hamler's return kicks in the preseason. So like to make a move. And again it was for a ham sandwich. It's a swapping a seven late round picks in 2026 like but to make that move you must have seen something enough And I. I did see. I think it was Pro Football focus said that he caused eight missed tackles, 15 missed tackles on his eight returns in the preseason. That's tough to do.
C
Yeah, yeah.
D
He's a small. He's five nine something like.
B
Yeah. Five nine, one eighty.
D
So yeah. To see something to make that move. It kind of feels to me because he's also a defensive back too. I think I saw. So he pretty much took Hardy spot.
B
Yeah. And McDermott was positive about Hardy.
D
Vastly improved.
B
Vastly improved and all. But it might just be.
C
There's so many.
B
Give him a little more time. But that's. It's. Hey, if you have another small defensive back kick returner take your place, that's not a great sign for him.
C
No, I agree. But I also think him being a rookie, the practice squad would do him well that time.
B
Yeah.
C
Develop under the tutelage.
D
But again I think. I think there seems like. I mean there could be another team that liked what they saw. Especially I. We talked about after the preseason finale he looked good in coverage, looked good in the run game. Like that could be one where they say hey, this guy was drafted out of Penn State by the Bills to be a returner. We need a returner now. And by the way, I think he can sprinkle in defensively. So.
B
Yeah.
C
Yeah. Love it.
D
Fluid situation.
B
It is. I'll be looking to see if they do anything at quarterback. I think that's interesting. If Mitch is healthy. It's about the third guy. I know I said interesting. I like it's a. It is interesting because it is. It will tell us what happens the first couple of days and I. I really don't expect anything at wide receiver. I really don't. I think they're going to stick with who they have and bring the other guys back on the practice squad.
C
Just keep your expectations low.
B
No, I don't. I think they believe this is the five they're going to go with this year with a sprinkling in of the guys on the practice squad if they need them. I think they're bringing several of those guys back. We haven't mentioned. I don't believe we did shorter. Yeah.
D
Yeah, we did.
C
Yeah.
D
Saying that he got cut.
C
Yeah.
D
Because it was the. It was the Eminem line.
C
You probably.
D
You probably stopped listening.
B
I don't listen.
C
Yeah, no, neither do I. I was.
B
Focused on the Eminem lyrics.
C
You nailed it in the other video. Okay. Anyone else that we want to chat about?
D
Gable Steveson also got released. I think that was kind of expected, hopefully. I think he. He flashed at times to at least be worthy of a practice squad opportunity. I don't. That's a guy I don't see. That's a guy I don't see getting necessarily another shot at a different organization. Also, I feel like him learning football with the Bills and that tutelage buzzword for this podcast keeps him around, hopefully.
B
Yeah, I think that is a little bit about him too. Did. Did he like what he was doing? Yeah, he certainly seemed to be embracing what he was doing on the field, learning the game, and I would think they would want him back. It makes sense to have him. He's got a physical talent, too.
C
He flashed way more than I was expecting.
B
I agree.
C
For someone just learning. I mean, I know his athletic background is tremendous, but football, like, it's. I. I feel like your head would be spinning, but he made more plays than I really gave him credit to going.
B
You had a shot of him. Really nice hit that he had on plumber right after he got rid of the ball in the Carolina game.
C
Yeah.
B
I was like, when you watch that play, you're look just looking at a football player, not a guy who's trying to figure out where he's supposed to be. So.
C
Yeah, true. Okay. All right. That'll do it for us for my Catalana and Dan.
D
