I want to thank and recognize Sean McDermott. Coach McDermott gave me an opportunity of a lifetime. I'm so grateful for Coach McDermott. I love Coach McDermott, and I'm going to do everything I can to continue to build upon the things that he laid and the foundation he laid.
B
I thought Joe Brady nailed this introductory press conference. Excitement, energy, accountability, responsibility. I thought it was for the first time they got the message of what they wanted to get across from the change at head coach. They got it under control. Now from the Connors and Ferris Podcast Studio, this is the Buffalo plus podcast. Hey, everyone, and welcome back to the Buffalo Podcast. Here, located inside the beautiful Connors and Ferris Podcast studio, Mike Catalana. Dan Fates sitting inside of Jenna Cottrell seat because the birthday girl, well, she has plans.
C
She made reservations.
B
She's got reservations.
C
Yeah. Husband did. Yes.
B
So she was up there with us today in Buffalo as we were there for Joe Brady's press conference, as well as Josh Allen speaking, Brandon Bean also talking. So we'll get into all of that. Our reaction to the press conference, what Josh Allen had to say, all of that and more. Be sure to, like, comment and subscribe. Really appreciate the support we've gotten to.
C
Yeah.
B
Over the last few videos. I think people have been very kind in their comments. We read a lot of the comments.
C
Which I really appreciate, because I think you get what we are. You know, some sometimes if people just drop in, maybe they don't get the vibe of our podcast. We always want to be honest with you in any way possible. And this was not a great week and a half for the Buffalo Bills leading up to this.
B
Yeah.
C
From the time they fired Sean McDermott, no matter your thoughts on whether Sean should have gone or not, from that point going forward, not great. Their messaging was not great. That news conference was bad. A lot of those things. Today, it turned around a little bit.
B
Yeah, it did. And the other thing we also want to get to right off the top, Josh Allen was there at the press conference today for Joe Brady, supporting his guy on crutches, walking boot and a walking boot. He apparently had broken a bone in his foot, which we were all suspecting he had some type of injury that he was dealing with this season. It was something with this fifth metatarsal.
C
He was asked to spell the word.
B
And it wasn't me who asked the question to spell it.
C
Matt Beauvais did.
B
Friend of the pod.
C
Now, Josh, a very bright guy. I think he spelled it correctly.
B
Nailed it. Yeah, I would hope so. I think if you had the surgery. Could you have spelled not a chance? Yeah, not a chance.
C
Well, you would have gotten fifth, right?
B
I would have gotten fifth, right. But, yeah, he said it was just a standard procedure. Cleaned up, got the bone removed, and then they said they took the bone out and then fixed it up. Those were his words.
C
That worries me.
B
He said that if they had a game this week, he would have found a way to play.
C
That's a little shot of Bo Nix, isn't it?
B
A little bit.
C
Hey, Bo.
B
Also, the fact that he said, first.
C
Of all, I think he would have played.
B
He would have found a way. And Josh said that it was a injury he had already had that was re. Aggravated in that Browns game, which we all kind of thought. So he doesn't expect to miss any time. He said it was a very simple surgery, all those kind of things. So nothing to. I don't think to alarm anybody. It was just noteworthy when Josh is there and we had kind of were looking down the tunnel as we were there waiting in the weight room for the press conference, and we were like, this guy on crutches in a boot. Is that Josh? And we're like, I don't know, maybe. And then we also thought there was a possibility maybe he takes the boot off when he comes to answer questions or walk in. But he was on crutches in a boot. So that. Is that the big thing, though, obviously, along with Josh, and we'll get to what he had to say, because I thought it was some very interesting stuff there. Mike, your first impression of Joe Brady's introductory press conference was impressive.
C
I thought he was really good. There is questions about Joe Brady, of course, he's never been a head coach. Big job for him. He has to step up and fill big shoes. Be. You know, we'll talk about what he said about Sean McDermott, but to this point, to walk in, he was emotional, and that's fine. He should be. He's 35 years old, becoming a head coach of an NFL team. But I thought he. His. He hit on all the right points. I think he did. And I think he looked different to me. We've heard him talk a lot. He took the tone of the leader. Not arrogant, not like I know everything, but he took accountability, responsibility, excitement. Like he had a lot going for him in this, and I think it started right away with him crediting Sean McDermott, and I think that's really what he needed to do. In fact, do we want to hear a little bit, a clip of what he said about Sean McDermott? And his influence on his career.
A
I want to thank and recognize Sean McDermott in 2022. Four years ago, Coach McDermott gave me an opportunity of a lifetime. I had an opportunity to come here, coach for the Buffalo Bills and Coach Josh Allen. I took immense pride in that. Over the past four years, I've learned a tremendous amount of things from Coach McDermott. How to lead, resilience, standards. The past nine years in this organization matter. I'm understanding of that. I'm appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of it. They matter deeply and they deserve respect. I'm so grateful for Coach McDermott. I love Coach McDermott, and I'm going to do everything I can to continue to build upon the things that he laid and the foundation he laid.
B
Yeah, I thought that was great, and I thought that was really important. We did the video yesterday. Obviously, we're recording this at 5:30 on Thursday after the press conference. We drove home. There was a bad accident on the 90s. So we're just getting this now. I will get this up as soon as possible. So this will be up Thursday evening. At some point. I thought that was one of the. When we talked about the video we did yesterday, it was like, what did we expect? And we wanted it to be pushed forward. We wanted to see what was Joe Brady's vision. Not the vision of what there was, but to push forward. And I thought they did a really nice balance between. We've done some really good things here. We've had success. And part of that success was from Sean McDermott. Yeah, I think that was the first time over the last week and a half that somebody said that in a clear, concise manner. I thought that was. Was very important. So. So to have that point, Mike.
C
Well, yes. And, you know, let's be honest, Sean McDermott hired him and promoted him. Sean McDermott helped make his career. Joe Brady's doing the work, and he became a very good offensive coordinator. Whatever you think about his play calling, you're going to get more of his play calling because that's what he's going to be doing. But I thought to recognize that in a room, in a place where the message has been we needed to move Sean out, and they did. Sean is gone. But I think that was classy for him to do and accurate. And I thought it was heartfelt when he said it.
B
My thought. And we were texting in our group text during the press conference, I thought he crushed it.
C
Yeah.
B
And I know what you could also say is, well, it's an introductory press conference.
C
And you're right.
B
But guess what? You could lose a press conference. You can have a bad press conference. Do you want to know why? Because we just saw one about a week and a half ago. Okay. I thought Joe Brady nailed this introductory press conference. Excitement, energy, accountability, responsibility. I thought it was for the first time they got the message of what they wanted to get across from the change at head coach. They got it under control, and it.
C
Was great that it came from him because he is now. You know what's funny? When Brandon Beam went up there and spoke and introduced him, and Bean is the one who led the search, and I think he's very influential in obviously who they ended up picking. It felt a little odd to see Brandon Bean in that spot because they haven't introduced new coaches.
B
Yeah.
C
Terry Pula was there, obviously, and did not speak publicly. Take a pitch for this one. After last week, it's like, didn't even introduce him.
B
No sat front row.
C
So that was Brandon's job. And then he did that. And to your point of, you know, he, he did show that. By the way, what were the drinks that he was talking about when he said.
B
He said cappuccinos, Gatorade, Fast twitch.
C
Yeah.
B
And energy drinks.
C
Yeah. Like, he, he, he is wired like he's ready to go. But I think he, he expressed that. And it's funny, we mentioned the Sean stuff. He said, thanking Sean, what he did for me, and then he flipped that switch and said, but now it's about moving forward. And I think that's a fair, right thing to do. Thanks, Sean. Move on.
B
And I thought what I liked too, was you're always going to hear a coach say, like, it was a little bit of coach speak of. I didn't want to just be a head coach. I wanted to be the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. Right. But he said, I didn't take this job to shy away from expectations. I know what I signed up for. That, to me, was really on point.
C
And you also have to give him credit for this. You know, a lot of times somebody says something like that and you're like, well, they hired you. He did interview with what, five other teams at least. Yeah. Like, teams wanted at least talk to him, however far it got. And then the Bills ended up hired him. I, I thought it was interesting that Bean said they approached him like they didn't know him. And I believe that. I believe they did that because that had to be fair to Joe because there would be a tendency to think, you know, and And Bean said, there's some things I know that I know Terry doesn't know or some of the other people in the room, so let's just bring him in here and let it go. And then he said at one point they were like, hey, we got to get Joe back in. Here's a bunch of.
B
Because Joe was the first interview they had, right? And Fitzpatrick, Ryan Fitzpatrick kind of talks about it, too. That. Not to say that Joe was an afterthought, but we even kind of mentioned the fact that we thought maybe Joe was just getting the interview because he's been there. He's been there. And Joe said he called his agent afterwards and was like, that was. That wasn't just getting the, hey, man, you're here. We'll interview you. And I. I actually liked that approach because not in the building, not in the interview room. Like, how do you balance all of that of guys that you don't know anything about, guys that you have some familiarity with? He even talks about with Brian Dable. They know Dave's. He's like, talk to us. Like, we don't know. You explain all those things. I think that's a very adult, mature way to go through the process that I actually liked where I thought at times you don't get a ton of insight into that room. Like, we were asked Joe Brady about the question, you know, you want to. You will make changes and things need to be changed and tweaked. And it was like, well, what are you going to change? Well, I'm not going to get into that right now, which is fair. It's like asking. It's kind of like asking for the secret sauce of what you're going to make. It's. Well, that's my thing I'm going to work on. So I thought it was a process.
C
And all that is a process. But, you know, the other part I was thinking about is he is interviewing for another job now. He's still going to call the plays, but you have to look at him as this person who is here trying to become the head coach of the Bills. You know him as an oc. There are things, naturally, that will change because he is going to be running the entire team, not just his offense. And there are transitions for him. And I did like the fact that he also did not shy away from realizing he's never been a head coach before. Josh even talked about that. It's like, he hasn't been. So everything's going to be new in terms of that role, which is. Which comes with it, they'll likely be mistakes. But guess what? When you're a head coach in the NFL, there's always mistakes. You know, who makes mistakes and is trying to own up to them. Or Sean Payton just made mistakes in the game. Sean McVay made mistakes. These are outstanding coaches that, with a ton of experience, like, it's hard to get it all right. He hasn't done any of that yet. So there is a learning curve for him there. But I thought he approached that with a level of excitement and confidence, but a humility to say, I haven't done this yet, so I have to do it now.
B
And I thought that's where we hit this point. And I know there are some people. And there were some comments because I joked around, like, oh, he's one. And oh, in press conferences, right. Like, that's his thing that he tweets after every game that they win. I know that a good introductory press conference isn't worth a bag of beans. They're not. Now three and oh, to start next year. We don't know if it will work. All of that will be decided in the future. We will be able to have results and there will be a bigger sample size of how Joe Brady is as a coach. I understand that, but we have seen it, and it's what we talked about before, like, what to expect. You can have bad introductory press conferences. That's not what we saw. We saw a clear, concise message and what Joe Brady's going to bring, the energy, the culture, all of that stuff. I liked what I saw and I liked what I heard. And again, I know some people in my comments were like, well, you looked jittery and excited. Yeah, I think that's part of what excites you. Like. And again, I think we see Joe Brady on Mondays after games, and it's a little bit mellow. You know, he's kind of controlled. We've heard about the energy and the juice that he brings from players from the meetings that he talks about. I liked getting to see that. And that's what I would have thought if you got a Grant Udinsky.
C
Yeah. Or.
B
Or. Or a new A Davis Webb. Getting an opportunity to see a guy be excited for this opportunity, this challenge in his career, I liked. Again, it doesn't mean now that they're 5, 0 to start next year, all of that will be decided later. But for one day, I thought the Bills got it right for the first time in a week and a half. The message, the narrative I liked.
C
Well, they rarely get the narrative wrong. They rarely look disjointed. They rarely look and I tweeted after that news conference that it looked like the drought days. It was a bad day. And what did we say this in can become in hindsight at least as far as the way the organization looks like just a bad day and a bad news conference. I still don't agree with them firing Sean McDermott and we'll all see if Joe can coach. But they needed a good day. I have to say Dan references in the weight room. It's a pretty spectacular weight room. Like they're three facility there is top notch and they dressed it up and it was a great setting. I thought they've done it in the field house before which is very big, sort of cavernous for that. And I thought this was a better spot for it. It was big. It felt big. But so when you reference the weight room, it's kind of funny because by the way, the Bills used to do their post game news conferences in the like weight room that they had in the stadium.
B
When the Bills played the Raiders at the Coliseum in 2016, they had their visiting media. We were in the weight room like we were sitting on benches.
C
Yes. Like which is kind of funny. Yeah. This was a, this looked first class. It was done well. They got this right and like you said, they needed a, a little comeback in in now and we are in still in, you know, January. They need a little comeback. The work is just starting. They got coaches to her. They got a lot of stuff to do. But I'm going to give him this. This was a really good day. And it doesn't to Stan's point, it doesn't mean anything until they actually start doing the job correct. But it was good to see him look like a guy who could do it. And by the way, he will get much better at media stuff in terms of he was good today in the excitement. He's going to be doing media with us when the season starts four days a week. Yeah, like he's going to get a lot of time to get comfortable in doing that.
B
And just to make another point, Maz Vids said made a comment and I sent it to you guys in the in our group text. But just the fact of we appreciate the comments, we read them, you know, all that stuff. Some guy, Maz Viz said, if you guys read my comments and pay attention, you've already know I'm extremely critical of your coverage. In the past I often troll your comment section. However, your coverage of this transition has been nothing short of stellar. I'm a big McDermott stand, admittedly, and I greatly appreciate the fact that you guys, especially Mike, have not towed the company line and dumped on him like so many other people. You've earned respect from me. That's what we're trying to do here.
C
We're.
B
We're calling a circle. A circle. A square. A square. What they did today was a win.
C
Just like what they did the other day was a loss.
B
Right.
A
So.
B
So again, so for people that are saying, oh, now, now you're all agreeing with it. It was a good press conference. Why, why. Why can't we just. I think it hit all the right notes.
C
It's the equivalent of saying, I like the way the uniforms looked. They look cool.
B
They didn't win a game or lose a game because of the uniforms.
C
Yeah.
B
And again, the results will be between the lines starting in September, all of those things. But I thought that was an important point to hit, and I just wanted.
C
To make that with you on that. Like, it was. Like I said, it was a good day for them. It gives some momentum in the building. You could tell a lot of staff were there. A lot of people were there. People were. They. They were stung a little bit of how poorly the announcement of Sean being gone, like the. The news conference and all of that went, and even the announcement of the hiring of Joe, I would think whatever level people were on Brady, it definitely would have gone up today. Doesn't mean it's a thousand percent. Doesn't mean you didn't want somebody new. I thought he approached it almost like he was new. Yeah. Like, it felt almost. It was way more. Way more. Felt like a different version of Joe Brady. So I. And I was happy for him today. He's earned the right to have a good day. And it was a good day.
B
All right. So the other news was obviously Josh on crutches in a walking boot. And then he spoke to the media for the first time since we saw him in tears in Denver. And I thought it was also a very insightful conversation with Josh. Very.
C
Let's start. The matter of fact started, too. He was asking. He was like, when they found out about Sean.
B
Yep.
C
He was like, Terry Pula called to tell me. I believe he said the first thing I did was get on the phone and call Sean McDermott. And he talked about his relationship with Sean. So you can have that, and you can be upset for your coach and your. I'll say friend. I mean, it's a certainly friendly. Like, when I say friend, like, I Do think they are. They can be friends now because he doesn't coach them. But I thought that was great to hear out of the leader of the team, what Sean meant to him. But then basically transitioning to, okay, now we got to move to this next step. By the way, I wanted to say I'm wearing a sport coat. I did not get dressed up. I got dressed up because it was Jenna's birthday.
B
That's.
C
Yes, I like that.
B
Yeah, thanks.
C
Yeah.
B
I thought what was interesting, too, to get again, a little bit of Josh's perspective of being in those interviews. Again, Josh didn't have the end all be all say, like, we all kind of assumed, like we said, like, we called it as it is. I think he gave an idea. Brady even said that Josh was stoic. He didn't talk to him for the week that he was being interviewed. And the fact of, hey, like, was really trying to remove himself. Josh said, Josh told Joe, I didn't get you this job. You got yourself this job and that kind of thing. And obviously, it was very much Joe's message also was, I tweeted out. He got kind of emotional talking about the players. I'm only. I'm so lucky that not only do I get to do what I do, but I get to do it with you guys. All of those kind of things. But I thought Josh funny said, I'm sitting in on these interviews, but I'm not the one making the decision. It was a little awkward at first. He said it took him back to when he was at the combine, and you're going through all these interviews, and sometimes you're like, what am I doing here? Like, what? You know, kind of balancing that.
C
Glad it was awkward for him. Yeah, it should have been. But Bean was great when he said that. I thought when he was like, well, if we didn't have Josh there, it would have felt weird. Like, people would have been like, well, why wasn't Josh there? I think it appears they. I think they put him in that spot, especially for the other people. But I thought it was cool that he got to see Joe Brady in that setting. Yep. Because it was. It is different. They are interview him as the guy in charge of the whole team. Josh and Brady both said they said, we're going to hold each other accountable. Yep. Which is what you're concerned about. I. I think. I hope this is what Joe Brady can become where he is still tight with Josh. Like, Sean McDermott respected Josh. They were close.
B
Yeah.
C
But you still got to be the coach. And Josh needs to be coached. And I think he trusts Joe Brady enough to tell him the truth. And I hope that is the case. And way it goes.
B
Yes. And Josh talks about also just the emotional whirlwind that had been the last two plus weeks, because not only that, being involved in the interviews, your head coach being fired. He said he feels a sense of responsibility. And he kind of was very poignant when he said, if I didn't, if I made a couple of different plays, we're not here, we're preparing probably for a game. And he goes, and I truly believe that. And he also said that because you asked Brady about, hey, the failures and the proverbial playoff wall that you've hit. Joe Brady's been associated with that. And he and Joe Brady said, those five turnovers are on me. He goes, when the players play well, they get the credit. When they don't play well, I take the blame. I liked that message. I like that message a lot. Josh kind of echoed that message of, hey, kind of like what he said when Ken Dorsey was fired. Like, I bear some of that responsibility. Brandon, being to his credit too, also acknowledged that too, with the Shawn McDermott kind of points, all those things. And I think every time he says that, he gains a little bit more favor back with the fans. Like, don't be combative with radio hosts that are, that are being a little bit nitpicky and saying, addressing these things, understand that your roster has flaws, that it needs to improve. I don't think that's some hot take. So I like those points. But Josh talking about the surgery, being in on interviews, all these kind of things, and he says he's still trying to process all of it because. Because the last time we heard him and he said, this loss is going to stick with me for a long time, as he was, you know, crying after the Denver game. And he's like, I'm still replaying those things. And he said he was still replaying a lot of the plays that have been in the elimination playoff games. Those ones. He goes, those are still going through my head. Yeah, he's a human being and he also cares a lot. And I think that's. That's what you love about Josh. And I liked that message.
C
He's always had accountability. A lot of times he. Every time it was bad, it didn't work. He was like, it's on me. It's on me. It's on me. I love accountability. I think Brady had it today. Let's also be honest. Like, you know, I See these people that will just constantly harp on the defense isn't good enough. And we can talk about what they said about the defense. Defense isn't good enough in the playoffs. You got to score 30 points because. Whatever. I'm sorry. They lost that Denver game because of the offense. Five turnovers, a chance to tie it, a chance to win it. They didn't get it done. Three years in a row. They didn't get it done. I don't care what your defense is. They have said it year after year and they're going to say it again next year. We'll take our chances with Josh Allen with the ball late in the game to win, and three years in a row that hasn't worked. So they should be taking accountability for that. Brandon Bean should be, too. It's like we can talk all about the defense changing, but Josh took accountability, Joe Brady took accountability and Bean did. In the bigger picture of what has happened with this team, because like I said, Sean's out the door.
B
Yep.
C
This is on the guys who are there now.
B
And that's what Josh was also trying to process, too, in the sense of, hey, coach got fired. All these things are happening, but the reality is we got to move forward. The reality is, like, there's no crying over spilt milk. Like. Like we're moving forward. He said he has, truly has. I truly believe in the direction of this organization starting at the top. Those were Josh's words. Moving forward. I thought, again, you have him on board. All these things are going right. Their comments run Josh like, that's not happening. Like this, this organization is.
C
Is.
B
We'll see how it all shakes out. We're two weeks into the post Sean McDermott era and Joe Brady will get to decide the narrative moving forward and the players will get to decide that how it goes. But I thought the points that Josh made were great. Brady's points, great. And we'll have plenty of time to talk about defense and the coaching staff and how that's all going to get built. I think that that will be coming in the future days and future videos that we'll have.
C
There is, you know, some news going, like, Jamila Dai, is Miami gone? He's gone to Miami. There's a talented coach. We already had known obviously about Bobby Babich going and there was a thought they were going to promote Austin Gunn. Austin Gunn is the offensive line coach. That's not going to happen.
B
Pat Mayer, who is an offensive line coach with the Steelers, is being reported that he is being brought in as the Bill's new offensive line.
C
Yeah, that wasn't announced by the team, but this is what they got to do. Like you got to start piece in the.
B
Yeah.
C
You know they're going to need a wide receiver coach as Adam Henry is gone, so. And you need wide receivers. I will say a lot of Keon talk.
B
So, yeah, that was the last point I kind of really wanted to get into was Josh was asked about have you reached out to Keon after the comments made in the Terry Pula press conference? And do you think he will. Do you think he can bounce back from it? And Josh said he will bounce back from it. I. I'm not giving up on zero. Joe Brady then spoke to the media after double down, said he will be on this team. I told him the best thing that can happen for him is that I become the head coach. Like, they are still in lockstep right now with what's going on. I think it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. It doesn't make any sense to sit there and go, keon's not going to be on our team anymore. We're going to move on from him. Like, nobody wins in that scenario. So I think there still is a lot to be said. It doesn't mean that Keon's going to be your number one wide receiver next year. They still know they need to address the position. At least I believe. Believe they know they need to address that position. It was just another interesting note to put on from today.
C
Look, they got issues with this roster, right? No matter what they've been telling everybody, they have issues with the roster. Wide receiver is one of those. They got guys who got paid too much money who should be gone. Keon doesn't make a lot of money. Bring him back, bring him to camp, bring him through the spring, see what you got. But at some point, if it ain't working again, get rid of them. But they're trying to be positive now. We'll see. I'm not buying any of it till we see it on the field. Yeah, I think you feel the same way overall.
B
Better day for Bill's fans, for the Bills organization as a whole. Let us know what you guys think about the Joe Brady stuff. Plenty of clips on our social media, YouTube shorts, TikTok, Instagram, all that stuff. As long. As well as our Twitter pages.
