Diggs on Buffalo and Brady on Josh Allen
Loading summary
Mike Catalana
Again, this may be the worst time to go up against this jets team on a short week with a new offensive coordinator. Joe Brady is up a creek with no paddle. Okay, but this, when it comes down.
Dan Fates
To this, who gave him those buttons?
Mike Catalana
Yeah, I know. I got so many buttons.
Dan Fates
Oh, that's amazing.
Mike Catalana
So many buttons. This is the Buffalo plus podcast, brought to you by Connors and Ferris.
Jenna Cottrell
All right, welcome to the Buffalo plus channel, presented by Connors and Ferris, Mike Catalana, Dan Fates. I am Jenna Cottrell. We are in our sweet new podcast studio. We want to shout out Brian swear to for all his help getting everything set up. Gentlemen, let's talk about it. We're going to talk about Brady Allen, Stefan Diggs, but before we do, please be sure to, like, comment. Thank goodness we're here to the channel.
Mike Catalana
Nobody would subscribe.
Jenna Cottrell
No, I think they would.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
All right.
Dan Fates
They wait for it. They wait.
Jenna Cottrell
I'm sure. Yeah. Thrilled by it. Dan on the audio effects is going to be fun.
Dan Fates
Yes.
Mike Catalana
We heard the. The improvements that we want to be made here. So we're working on that. Yes, it's still work in progress. Things are improving, but obviously we're trying. Obviously, the feedback was great.
Jenna Cottrell
We. We needed a spark. We made a change.
Dan Fates
And Brian is our new offensive coordinator. How about that?
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, Brian behind the camera, switching all the cameras. Okay, let's talk about it. Bill's getting ready for the jets on Sunday. That obviously a big game. But let's talk more about this Bills team, where they're at and kind of what happened today, because Stefan Diggs, we're recording this on Thursday, kind of a back and forth. He was asked about his brother's tweets. Is Trayvon tweeting out, man, we got to get 14 out of there. Talking about his brother. Dan, what do you make of what happened? And you know, the reaction, really, by Diggs?
Mike Catalana
Yeah, I think it wasn't surprising by any means that Steph was asked by us in the media, what do you make of your brother's tweets? I think that's very fair because it's something. And it's not just. I kind of made the comparison. It's not Jackson Mahomes talking about Pat's teammates or something like that. This is a NFL player who carries some weight, and they've said they wanted to play together, so I understand. And I thought the way that Steph handled those questions was perfect. He said, look, hit my brother. I don't control what my brother does.
Dan Fates
He's.
Mike Catalana
He's allowed to Tweet, that's my family. I love him, but I can't answer his. To his tweets.
Jenna Cottrell
Like, yeah, you gotta ask him.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Jenna Cottrell
And he's not on the Buffalo Bills.
Mike Catalana
Correct. And while he does understand what an NFL locker room is, he doesn't understand what is going on in the Bills locker room. And that's what Steph said is different. So, like, he's not worried about that. And again, he's trying to block out all that noise because to him, it's not noise. To us, it's noise. He goes, people are doing interviews about what Trayvon said. Like. Like that I said it. And so I. I started to sense a little bit of that frustration. Mike.
Dan Fates
Yeah, look, I think that should end it, because what ends up happening is he's been asked about his. In some form, do you want to be in Buffalo? Question.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Since the end of last year, we couldn't ask him. He was asked about it in different places and then eventually talked the first day of training camp. I think he has answered that in his words, and he's answered that in his actions. He has been phenomenal this year. He's been a true captain for the team, shows up every week encouraging his teammates. He's done that. So on Thursday, after he says, this is on my. This is my brother's tweet, by the way. It was during the game, too. It wasn't like he talked to his brother.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And then the next day, he's not, like, calling his brother during the game. But then there's this moment where after Diggs is. I would say this. Handled it professionally. He wasn't over the top, a little exasperated by having to say it again and again. And this is what he had to say about where he is and answering this question about his commitment.
Stefan Diggs
It's like, I've repeatedly had to say the same thing twice to multiple people, and I feel like y' all put me in a space. Whereas, though. Water. I really want to ask the question. Question as to what are y' all feeling about the situation? How do y' all feel? Because, I mean, I feel like the less I say, the more they prop or when I address a situation, it's not enough. You want more information as to. Well, speak more about it. I'm saying I. I feel like I addressed it in training camp. I addressed it prior to that. I'm saying. But I really sat down with kind of everybody here around, like, training camp and contact. Kind of felt like I nipped it in the bud as to how I felt or what I was feeling. But here we are again. Here we are revisiting the topic about how I feel. I play with confidence, I go on with confidence. I prepare each and every week. I've always been a professional. I've never really said anything about being unhappy or in the instance of that. So when you're drawing conclusions as to stuff I've never said, that's what kind of troubles me, because it kind of throws a wrench in it. It kind of creates chaos where I haven't created. You know what I'm saying? Chaos created around me. Whereas I just been in the same space. I've been in the same place, and I've spoken true words. I've said the same thing over and over and over. So when you draw a conclusion as to how I feel in my foreseeable future here, I've never said anything. But I'm a Buffalo Bill. I give it everything I got. I'm a professional, and I treat this game as such.
Dan Fates
So. And I think, again, I don't think he should have had to say that. I get it. We've all been in that spot. You know, the questions are asked. But I think he's already answered this question multiple times.
Jenna Cottrell
I think if you look at who he's been on the field and then on the sidelines and the leader that he's been, I can understand why he would be frustrated by continually having to answer this. I will say I understand why some fans were. Were curious about his brother tweeting when his brother tweeted, because is. Does that mean that Diggs is sharing that he's unhappy with Buffalo with his brother? That, I think, could be an understandable thing, but I think Diggs handled it the right way and say, like, that's my brother. He's literally tweeting this while this is happening. That doesn't mean that he speaks for me. He's speaking for himself. And if you want to know what he had to say, ask him.
Mike Catalana
Listen, I was one of the first people I was this off season. I kept saying, steph, we got to hear from you, man. You left in Cincinnati. You weren't at Locker clean out. Everybody else had to answer for Steph, and I thought that was tough. We're talking to Isaiah McKenzie about what Steph said, and we're talking about Josh, hey, Josh, how's your relationship? And all these things we didn't hear from him. And he kind of even said, like, when I don't talk like you guys, you guys think the message gets Gets louder when I, then when I do talk, it's not enough. I agree. I think that this whole thing, whether it's Stephen A. Or Trayvon Diggs tweeting something, it's a whole bunch of nothing. Like, like it's outside noise. It's great for morning shows. But I Stefan Diggs's actions and his words, like he said, what else do you want him to say besides getting like a Buffalo Bill tattooed on his face? Like he has done everything under these, these means. So I get his frustration of saying, why do I have to get asked this again?
Dan Fates
Yeah, look, I'm sure he shared some things with his brother and the way things are going, but there's a big step between maybe some frustration and he's not happy with the way the team is playing. And I want out of Buffalo because he's never said that. What he said was, I want to retire as a Buffalo Bill. Will he retire as a Bill? I don't know. But at the moment, you know, look at the way this offense has played this year and whatever frustration Steph Diggs had in the off season.
Jenna Cottrell
Could you imagine if he wasn't here?
Dan Fates
Well, that, and the other part is he was on to something here. Right? I mean, he's, he, he wanted something else out of this offense and it's not throw me the ball more. He gets as many targets as almost any player in the league. He puts up numbers non stop. He is still one of the top, somewhere in the top five of wide receivers in the NFL. So, look, he's been great and I think he handles himself very well publicly. And I think he did again on Thursday.
Jenna Cottrell
I think we asked when we asked him during training camp to finally talk and he did. I think that was so illuminating from where he was coming from. He took his time. He answered every question. And I can understand why he's frustrated by the fact that he keeps having to continually answer this question. So I, I get where he is coming from. From.
Dan Fates
Illuminating. Five syllables.
Jenna Cottrell
Illuminating.
Dan Fates
Way to go.
Jenna Cottrell
Did I say that? Wow, look at that. No, I, I, I think that is something, though, where, if I'm Steph, I.
Mike Catalana
I don't know if I would have answered that question as professionally as he did.
Dan Fates
He could have just said, asked and answered. I'm done. Like, I'm here.
Mike Catalana
Like, or, or almost had more snark of, like, I already answer this. Yeah, I thought we talked about this.
Dan Fates
Like, it doesn't, maybe I don't sense a lot of snark in him. It's more of A.
Jenna Cottrell
Well, you. You talked about covering this team in the 90s and what that was like.
Dan Fates
They would have just. I mean, come on. At the Super Bowl, Thurman Thomas is saying, I'm the Michael Jordan of this team. Right? It's.
Jenna Cottrell
Can you imagine?
Dan Fates
Jim Kelly and Thurman had to stand there with pieces of paper and apologize for. For talking about each other when Thurman said, well, the problem with this team is quarterback after Josh Allen had thrown his offensive lineman under the bus. Andre.
Jenna Cottrell
Jim Kelly.
Dan Fates
Yeah, sorry.
Jenna Cottrell
Maybe a Freudian.
Dan Fates
No, he never does that. That's what. None of this stuff. Andre Reed, awesome player, hall of Famer, got his jacket, man. He used to get mad about not getting the ball when they were winning. Like, that's the way it was. So I. I listened to the Diggs thing today, and I said to you guys, man, this is.
Mike Catalana
Oh, that was it.
Dan Fates
Nothing.
Mike Catalana
It happened. And I. Chad and I are sitting there like, this is gonna be something.
Dan Fates
This is.
Mike Catalana
This is. We're gonna talk about morning.
Jenna Cottrell
Morning radio will love this.
Mike Catalana
And Mike just goes kind of like, that's it. Like, oh.
Dan Fates
But I will say, in comparison to what. We lived in a different world. That 75 years. You hear that shot? He just took that right there. But we live in a different world now. I have so many people come up to me, hey, I hear Diggs once out. I'm like, where did you hear that? And it's brother tweeting something. And. And clowns. Like, I shouldn't say clowns. Like, I shouldn't say clowns. Like, Stephen A. I should respect. Stephen A's a clown, but when he talks about the NFL, it's clownish. Like, you know, he's got his sources, he's got his money. I say this all the time. Immensely successful.
Mike Catalana
Incredible.
Jenna Cottrell
Way more than.
Dan Fates
Keep the NFL out of your voice. I'm going to use. What was Nikki Haley. Keep the NFL out of your voice. Keep the Bills out of your voice. But it does play well in that world. So what did Dig say?
Jenna Cottrell
Like, stay off my Twitter.
Mike Catalana
That was last year.
Dan Fates
He left.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. Buck up, buddy. That was a good one.
Jenna Cottrell
Buddy asked the question. Isn't that one.
Dan Fates
I got to tell you, in this year, that has been drudgery for a lot of things. Diggs. When he talks, I enjoy it. Whether it's after the game. He doesn't talk every week. He's talked a decent amount this year and his preseason, he and his play on the field. That's the guy you trust on that team.
Mike Catalana
He was also the one that said, if you want to have fun, go get it, go to ice cream. It's great. It's great. It reminded me of what Emmanuel Sanders says. That's what life is like in the NFL. The one week you're the worst thing ever, and the next you're the greatest thing since milk was invented.
Dan Fates
It's so good.
Jenna Cottrell
It's amazing. No, I. And for Diggs, I think he's been everything that has been asked of him this season, and I think he's going to also be the key to helping Josh kind of come out of this rut that we've seen him be in. And maybe Joe Brady will also be that as we kind of transition. We got to hear from Joe Brady on Thursday, his introductory kind of press conference. I thought Dan, he had a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and he was pumping up his guy. Josh Allen.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. I love the. The honesty, the sincerity. Again, we don't. I don't know if Joe Brady is going to be a good offensive coordinator of the NFL. That is still to be determined. But what he. The words that he was saying and. And coming out. And again, little nervous, right?
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
And even said that, he goes, this is who I am. This is. I'm gonna stumble. I'm gonna slur my words. This is who I am.
Jenna Cottrell
And that I'm gonna stutter.
Mike Catalana
I think he said, yeah, the players know that. That's authentic, and that's me. And he just went on and on about, josh is the best quarterback in the NFL. I love him. I will take Josh, Helen, Every single day, all of these things. That's what I think Josh needs. Because just like we talked about yesterday when we were up there at practice, Josh just seems so. Not low. Positive, just low. Josh just seems low.
Jenna Cottrell
I mean, yesterday I was getting some people being like, jenna, you're being alarmist, all this stuff. But we've known Josh since he was drafted. We were one of the first people actually to meet him.
Dan Fates
We talked to him before he was drafted.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, we did. And to see how happy go lucky. But I mean that in a positive way. Like, he was always someone that was high energy. You saw it when he was in his face, the faces of his teammates in that Chiefs game. Like someone who wore his emotions on his sleeve. And I feel like what we've seen from him this year is just such a. Is detached too strong of a word?
Dan Fates
No. What worries me is sometimes it almost seems resigned. And that's not great.
Jenna Cottrell
Correct.
Dan Fates
And I have seen him. You've seen him where? Even when they're losing or it's not going well, you feel like, you know, he's got that moment and then he's back.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Dan Fates
And then he's back. And he rarely had bad to bad, bad back to back games. And now it just feels like he can't find that he's trying. I mean, runs in the end zone in Cincinnati and he's pointing at the guy and he gets the penalty. I loved it. You loved it? You loved it. I want to see more of that. I said to you guys. And Joe Burrow has this quiet arrogance, says it sometimes in just a certain way. I know Josh has that. We've said we know Josh has that in him. He doesn't just always express it. Right now I don't feel like he has it and he's got to get it back.
Jenna Cottrell
And he should.
Dan Fates
I'm sorry, he should walk out on the field like, I'm the baddest man in the world. Go out there and play like Josh Allen. That does not mean reckless, crazy put, put yourself at risk, but that means play like the superstar quarterback.
Jenna Cottrell
He's been the key to this team turning it on, scoring more points, having more wins is Josh Allen. But I think, to your point, it's about. I think his teammates need to help him get there. He has been. This team has put. He has put this team on his back for many game, many a win. And I think right now, Joe Brady, other players, other actual players around him need to be the ones that help kind of reach him at this moment. Moment.
Mike Catalana
I understand. I know he was asked after this game, like, just the fact of, is this the worst stretch you've. You've gone through in your, in your entire career? And after a long, long pause, Josh has kind of said, I don't know. And this even goes back to the struggles that he was having earlier in the season. And I remember the story. I. I remember doing the live hit before the Tampa Bay game going, like, where's the fun? And that was when Josh said, go to. Or Steph said, go to local ice cream shop. And Josh goes, I'm having fun. It may not look like it, but I'm. I'm having fun. Like, it doesn't. The actions, the expression on his face doesn't line up with what the words that he's saying.
Jenna Cottrell
That's why I feel like his teammates have to help him. They have to help show him and remind him that he's Josh Allen.
Dan Fates
Let's also catch the ball. Let's also not have 12 men on the field.
Jenna Cottrell
It's both. It's both in how you react to him, how you talk to him, but how you play around him.
Dan Fates
Have you play around him and go win the game. Yeah, go win the game. They have lost four out of six. The wins were a crazy Hail Mary, which it would have been very lucky, but it could have happened.
Mike Catalana
The Bucks and the Giants and that.
Dan Fates
Giants game, are you kidding me? They were shut out till the fourth quarter against one of the worst NFL.
Mike Catalana
That's why Joe Brady's only job, the only thing that he needs to focus on for the next seven games, they may be broken schematically. They may not be able to retool an entire playbook, especially on a short week, especially going up against this jets, very good Jets. But he just has to make Josh Allen feel like he's the baddest man on the planet again.
Joe Brady
Give me Josh Allen all day, every day. I'm not worried about it. When I look in his eyes before every game, there's not a worry in my mind. And I guarantee you that's the same mindset of everybody in this locker room. So, you know, I believe Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the NFL and. And it excites me that I get an opportunity to call plays with him and because I know, I feel like you can look down at the play call and whatever you call, Josh Allen is going to find a way to make it work. And there's a lot of confidence in that.
Mike Catalana
Like, I remember when he ran in. It was. He ran in the touchdown after Cincinnati and then it was. He kind of walked to the side. No, it was the, the Bucks game. He threw a touchdown pass, something like that. And he just walked off the field nodding. And I went like, oh, he's back. Like, that's the Josh Allen. If he's not screaming, it's the. Against the Jags. He runs in and flexes. It's those little moments that, that you go, oh, he's feeling himself now. Yeah, those moments have been few and far between and they've been fleeting and they have gone and they've come and gone so quickly. Nothing has been sustained. It hasn't been consistent. That is what Joe Brady again, we will find out if he can call plays and run an offense in the NFL.
Jenna Cottrell
Seven games is a decent sample size as well.
Mike Catalana
But. But I'm not going to go off of what 2019 was in. In for LS, for LSU or two seasons with a really bad team in Carolina.
Dan Fates
Yeah, he's gone one extreme to the other at lsu.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Had everybody. Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase and Joe Burrow. That's not a bad combination to have. But in terms of Brady, you know what? I really. And we'll never know this, because I don't know if anybody. I want to know what those quarterback meetings were like. When he's in there with Joe Brady and he's in there with Ken Dorsey and they're going over tape. I want to know at what way the negatives are communicated to him. Meaning, like, I do think some coaches are good at highlighting. Here's what happened. And still instilling in your quarterback confidence, not just beating him up. And normally that's for a younger guy. That was Josh on his way up. Brian D. Was able to do while he could beat him up more.
Mike Catalana
Yep.
Dan Fates
Ken Dorsey got him as a superstar. Yep, he did. So it's a little different. But I wonder what that was like. And so I think of this, I think Joe Brady is now freed up to pump up Josh Allen because it's a little harder to do. You. You're not the boss. The OC is the boss in terms of, like, giving him what he did in the news conference, speaking that way, because when you talk about relationships right now, this is what that guy needs. He's beating himself up. Everybody else is beating him up. He needs to be brought back that way a little bit. And like you said, play calls are the play calls. Because sometimes the play call never really mattered with Josh Allen. He'd just make a play. Somehow they got to find that.
Jenna Cottrell
It's a compliment sandwich, right?
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Like, you have to find a way to pump him up, but also be like, hey, we need to do this better. And that's the thing. Josh knows, I think a lot of what he needs to do better. But my concern is, where is his confidence at right now?
Dan Fates
I think it's low. I think. Honestly, I think it's the lowest it's been since he's been with the Bills because.
Mike Catalana
Yep.
Dan Fates
When he's a rookie, he's making mistakes.
Jenna Cottrell
But you see the flashes.
Dan Fates
Yeah. The expectation.
Mike Catalana
Starting low.
Dan Fates
Right.
Mike Catalana
Like that. That's not it. It's not failing when you haven't succeeded before. It's succeeding. And then what is failure like once you have succeeded?
Jenna Cottrell
That also move the goal post back on Josh Allen every season after season.
Dan Fates
But that's interesting you say that because we always talk about goalposts keep getting moved farther and farther. I'm moving the goalpost back a little bit now.
Jenna Cottrell
I.
Dan Fates
No. My expectations for now in the interim is to find yourself. I, in the past, it was like, it's 30 points, it's 300 yards. Remember when that was the goal? 300 yards. Then we started laughing about it.
Jenna Cottrell
I forgot about that.
Dan Fates
He could throw for 300 and a half against the Dolphins sometimes. When I say bring the goalpost back, Dan, he's not going to go from zero to 60. He's not going to go out and put up 40 against the jets this week. He got a tough schedule. He's got to find where that Josh Allen has been. He's got to find and then he'll get better and better.
Jenna Cottrell
I, I agree. I don't, But Dan Shooter, shoot.
Mike Catalana
I, I, I, I remember talking to him last year. This is one of the things they, they went through a little bit of a tough time.
Jenna Cottrell
Do you think then it's like a switch being flipped?
Mike Catalana
No, I, I think it's freeing him up. I don't know if he's been held back and I don't know if that's a McDermott thing, which I know a bunch of people in the comments will say it's McDermott. Yeah, that's, that's the problem is, is that Sean's meddling too much in the offense. We don't know that. Nobody will ever know that. What I want to see is that I don't think he gets his confidence back by being captain check down and running the ball.
Jenna Cottrell
You go to the extremes.
Dan Fates
That's not what we're talking. I'm not talking about captain checkdown. I'm saying how about not turn the ball over four times in a game. How about play smarter and look, is.
Mike Catalana
Always going to be turnover prone.
Dan Fates
No, he's got these kind of turnovers.
Jenna Cottrell
I hear that, but I think there's a way to, to this is, Damn it. I'm gonna say there's a way to meet in the middle, but I do think, I do think that's the case. I think there's ways where you take your shots, you take your explosive plays, you try to get those big chunk plays, but then you also have some of the underneath stuff where Josh can get into a rhythm. He can, what is it? Shoot or shoot, go to the free throw line, see the basket, see the ball go through the hoop. Just some things like that. Have some completions, have some confidence, go from there, then take a shot.
Mike Catalana
He has completions, they're boring completions to the running back in the flat. I want to see Josh to free him up, I want to gas him Up. I want to show him the highlights. I talked about this before. JJ Redick was on some podcast where he said when he's going through a slump, he'd go back on YouTube and watch games where he dropped 50. I want to show Josh that, and I want to see him take some shots down the field. I know, again, this may be the worst time to go up against this jets team on a short week with a new offensive coordinator. Joe Brady is up a creek with no paddle. Okay, but this. When it comes down to this, who.
Dan Fates
Gave him those buttons?
Mike Catalana
Yeah, I know. I got so many buttons. Oh, that's so many buttons. I want to see Josh. It seems like he's. When he's made these mistakes, they haven't been the. But like Josh Allen pressing all the buttons. Mistakes.
Dan Fates
That's what I'm saying. He's making mistakes on simple reads and.
Mike Catalana
Simple plays because I feel like he's afraid of making mistakes. Okay, so. So he's almost being overly cautious. I think you're being overly cautious coming.
Dan Fates
To the same place that I think we are. I'm saying is I don't want him to be overly cautious. I want him to have some success. Build on that.
Jenna Cottrell
Look, build momentum.
Dan Fates
This is not the game where you're going to light anybody up. Yeah, because it's the Jazz.
Mike Catalana
I know that. That's the thing. And I want to see, like, our. Our are not part of, like.
Dan Fates
But here's what would be nice, because at the beginning of the year, when he still had some really good games, and then the Dolphins. He also had the game against the Jets. Like, the jets have just.
Jenna Cottrell
They have his number.
Dan Fates
Kind of owned him.
Mike Catalana
But I just want to finish my point of just the fact of. I'd like to see some shots downfield. I'd like to see Josh. I'd like to see Josh be the Josh and not this, you know? And again, there's a fine line between stupid and reckless. Running over linebackers, hurdling defenders, all of that. And then there's overly cautious. Taking everything. What the defense gives you.
Dan Fates
Jenna.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
I love how Dan totally disagrees with.
Jenna Cottrell
Us, but then makes the same point.
Dan Fates
Yeah, you're making our point. Yeah, we're with you on that.
Jenna Cottrell
There's a way to do.
Mike Catalana
I want to know. But you want them to run the ball this week.
Dan Fates
Oh, no, they are going to run the ball this week.
Jenna Cottrell
But I think that's also because, first of all, help. First of all, wins. Help everything. I agree. If you get some of that. Josh is not himself right now, and you got to help him out.
Dan Fates
I'm sorry, John, I'm interrupting you. He's had opportunities against this jets defense. They're really good. I think your goal this week, score 20 points, you win the game.
Jenna Cottrell
Thank you. For the Broncos just win.
Dan Fates
Yes, exactly. So I'm saying is maybe for this week, let him feel good. Let get have success. You know what I'd like to see out of Josh Allen this week? I'd like to see maybe 20 for 31, two touchdowns, no interceptions. They scored 23 points.
Mike Catalana
How many yards does he throw for?
Dan Fates
225 against the jets, which that same game against regular defenses is 3. 15. I mean, look, this defense is really good.
Mike Catalana
Absolutely.
Dan Fates
And that's why I say. And you also know that's what I said in that first jets game. Come on. If you don't throw up all over yourself, Zach Wilson wasn't going to beat you. And they turned it over and turned it over. So this game, while I want to see him get it back, part of getting it back is don't give the ball away. Don't make them. Don't make those mistakes. So that's why I think mixing in the run. Yeah, I'm not talking about being a running.
Jenna Cottrell
Just because you do that on Sunday doesn't mean you're going to do that every single week. And as Josh Allen's confidence begins and continues to grow, then you can have it be more Josh Allen centric and a little bit less.
Dan Fates
Yeah, because I'm going to tell you this because the next week they play the Eagles, you're not running the ball, but you can throw it on them. They give up a ton of yards, so you play also to the opponent. But they got to get Josh back also.
Mike Catalana
I'm not sitting here saying, like, don't worry, turnovers are fine, all of these things. That's not what I'm saying.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, that's. I mean, that's what we thought.
Dan Fates
Yes.
Mike Catalana
But the fact of the matter is, is that you're never going to. Josh is always going to be a little turnover prone.
Dan Fates
I wish his mistakes were, but that's crazy. Josh play mistakes.
Jenna Cottrell
I can. I can live with Josh trying to push the ball down the field, essentially it being an arm punt. What we've seen in these last couple of weeks, that interception against the Patriots.
Dan Fates
It'S the same way.
Jenna Cottrell
It's. Yeah.
Mike Catalana
That play, it's predictable.
Dan Fates
I think I want that play out more than I want the goal line shotgun draw, which is the worst play you know in the NFL. Oh, and every play run to Deontay Hardy needs to be out of the playbook. Those are the three things I want that play.
Jenna Cottrell
I mean, he has three snaps.
Dan Fates
I don't know if he just can't see it. He is thrown into coverage there. He did it against the jets last year when we were game at the Jets.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Dan Fates
First drive down the field and I'm like, what is he looking at?
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And he threw a pick. I'd rather see like Josh. He's flying around, running out of bounds, heaves it. Acr. That's bad, but at least that's kind of understandable.
Jenna Cottrell
And that's Josh.
Dan Fates
That's Josh.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. I, I want to see that Josh.
Dan Fates
I do too. It's not going to be this week.
Jenna Cottrell
I know that all these things, like.
Mike Catalana
I'm saying, I'm sitting here, like take shots, do these things, like be aggressive. It's like, can't really do that against.
Jenna Cottrell
Well, you can't really do that against the Jets. And I think you have to be careful and be mindful of where his confidence is now. And if you try to push those buttons and, and the turnovers happen, where will his confidence be be after that too?
Mike Catalana
I just don't.
Jenna Cottrell
Confidence is very tricky.
Mike Catalana
I just don't want to treat him like he's got kid gloves.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, I, I hear you, but I think. I don't think it has to. But he's not playing. He's not playing like Josh Allen right now.
Dan Fates
No, he's not.
Jenna Cottrell
So you work him back up to that. You have again, you have the team that helps him out. Von Miller talked about it this week. What do you do to reach Josh Allen when he's not feel. When he's feeling low? You love him unconditionally. You always support him. You're that guy. You help him out. Josh has done so much for this franchise. I'm hopeful that they can continue to grow in his momentum and his positivity and his confidence will be there.
Dan Fates
And by the way, I want to.
Jenna Cottrell
Tell this, that's a process because there's.
Dan Fates
A lot of Bills fans that sit around and love everything the national guys say when they were all in love with Josh and the Kyle Brandt's of the world doing videos of. You don't hear any of that stuff now. Yeah, and I told you then these guys all go with whoever's the flavor of the month and that's what they do. And then the national guys are ripping him. And honestly, it bothers me to hear.
Jenna Cottrell
That, well, I feel cherry pick.
Dan Fates
But, but it bothers me to hear that now because they've been right this year.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like he has just not been himself. And I think there have been reasons around that in the offense. I don't think they all get solved with Ken Dorsey being gone. But I'm sorry. You should not have the most predictable offense in the NFL with the quarterback like Josh Allen. It's insane.
Jenna Cottrell
The most unpredictable quarterback.
Dan Fates
It really is. So we're, we're somewhere in the middle here, Dan.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, he hates on me for being in the middle, but sometimes I like.
Mike Catalana
It when Jenna gets called Karen's and.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, well, I, I, I think it's just not, it's nuanced. Right. It's got to be like we're talking about a guy that's boring.
Mike Catalana
So like, like what you mean?
Jenna Cottrell
Like, this is why I hate.
Mike Catalana
There's like two sides to everything.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. Well, there's just, there's a way to go about it. Like, you can say Josh Allen is fantastic and also he needs to be better.
Dan Fates
Stephen, a fates over here.
Jenna Cottrell
Dan does love a hot take that.
Mike Catalana
He does.
Jenna Cottrell
And apparently a soundboard as well.
Dan Fates
Yeah, yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
I am hopeful. I. We talked about it. You did a poll about the confidence level in this offense and then turning things around.
Dan Fates
Oh, no. Fans were in the middle. You can't be in the middle.
Jenna Cottrell
Middle doesn't exist. What are you talking about?
Dan Fates
They're confident but hesitant. That's the way people are right now. They want to see it.
Jenna Cottrell
Hopeful and hesitant.
Dan Fates
Hopeful and has hesitant. And I would also say this, you can't really judge Joe Brady on this game.
Mike Catalana
Correct?
Dan Fates
Yeah. I mean, he's thrown in there.
Mike Catalana
Spoiler alert. They will. I just want everyone.
Jenna Cottrell
Well, we will too.
Mike Catalana
I just want everybody to be like, hey, guys, let's give him some time. Nobody is going to give Joe Brady time.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. And by the way, he's probably not sleeping this week. Right.
Dan Fates
The team has listed him as interim oc. I mean, this is what it is for now. So they've got to see progress in one form or another on Josh Allen before you make a decision on the future. But, you know, let's see, let's see how Josh Allen takes the field this week.
Jenna Cottrell
The biggest thing is getting Josh Allen's confidence back.
Dan Fates
You know, it's so funny. Sean McDermott, who we know is obviously subscriber, he listens. I've been pushing him to say, take the ball, give Josh that confidence. And he takes the ball. James Cook fumbles and that's why he benched him. Because Sean was thinking, I listened to Mike and I said, take the ball. And then James Cook fumbled on.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, right.
Mike Catalana
And then that stat leads to the Bill's poor opening drive defense that allowed a field goal, even though the Broncos got negative 3 yards in the first series.
Dan Fates
I mean, this is again where people cherry pick stats.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
What?
Dan Fates
Yes, they do.
Mike Catalana
Get out of here.
Dan Fates
They do.
Mike Catalana
Oh, wait.
Dan Fates
Yes. Yes, they do.
Jenna Cottrell
Can you imagine? Well, let's talk about this jets team, because while their defense is phenomenal, the offense is not good.
Dan Fates
It's really something to watch them because the hope for this jets fan base is we got nothing with him. You've got players around him.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
I love Hall, Garrett, Wilson. How this kid has put up numbers.
Jenna Cottrell
Unbelievable.
Dan Fates
With that quarterback. And has stayed at least publicly positive.
Jenna Cottrell
Positive.
Dan Fates
He's a heck of a player. He is a really good player. You got. Whenever he touches the ball, like, even with Zach Wilson throwing it, I don't know if he had, like, eight catches, whatever he had last week. Yeah, he's a great player. But this team lives and dies with that defense. And they are phenomenal.
Mike Catalana
You know, reminds me of. I remember a few years, it was 2017 maybe, when the offense was really bad at. That was McDermott's first year, first year with the defense. And I remember when they. When they started picking the ball off, they had like three games in a row with turnovers, forcing turnovers.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
And Micah Hyde and Jordan Poy were like, we got to get in the end zone. You're like, what? That's how the jets think. Like, we have to force a fumble, pick it up and lateral it.
Jenna Cottrell
We need to be doing more. I remember them being like, yeah, we got it. We got to bring it back in.
Mike Catalana
We got like, you guys have the.
Jenna Cottrell
Defense and you're like, oh, my gosh.
Dan Fates
Yeah. And look, the defense has not turned over the opponent. The bad thing for the offense is the Bills offense is that they have started with terrible field position.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Multiple reasons. One is the defense has not turned over the other team. They've had limited Three.
Jenna Cottrell
You love this so much.
Mike Catalana
So good.
Jenna Cottrell
That was.
Mike Catalana
I was that for Zack Wilson, but.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, no, that's pretty good. I do like that one. That was. Yeah, that's Zach Wilson.
Dan Fates
Are we okay?
Mike Catalana
I don't know.
Dan Fates
Limited to another one.
Mike Catalana
Do another one.
Dan Fates
And one more for Sam Martin. What is going on?
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
When your team is struggling like this, like, the NFL is not much of a field position team, but at some point you have to get that out of your punter. He has not gotten. I mean, he has been. I don't know what's. What's going on with him.
Jenna Cottrell
I know.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Line drives. And it really hurt them last week.
Jenna Cottrell
Really.
Mike Catalana
The special teams is being complimentary. Bad to the offense. That's also bad. They don't want them to feel left out.
Jenna Cottrell
I want. That was also a Brian, swear to God cameo right there.
Dan Fates
Coming in to help us out.
Jenna Cottrell
You gotta hit one of those.
Mike Catalana
So apparently this may change sound. Noises like people's voices.
Jenna Cottrell
I don't.
Mike Catalana
Yep. We're gonna not do that.
Jenna Cottrell
That's amazing. That's what I hear on the drive to Buffalo.
Dan Fates
Oh, Dan doesn't talk that much.
Jenna Cottrell
Dan's always right. It sounds like Shane.
Mike Catalana
Sounds like my daughter.
Jenna Cottrell
That is pretty good. Do we want to do our predictions for the game?
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
All right, Dan. I'll start.
Mike Catalana
Save the analogy for another week.
Dan Fates
Well, yeah, let's see. You know.
Mike Catalana
Oh, yeah, we'll do that for another week.
Jenna Cottrell
Are you sure?
Mike Catalana
Yeah, that's endless.
Dan Fates
That I could just repeat two minutes.
Jenna Cottrell
Evergreen.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, it's Evergreen. Nope, we don't.
Dan Fates
Okay, we'll see.
Jenna Cottrell
You cheat.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. Yeah. The. The.
Dan Fates
This is. That Josh Allen is Steph Curry.
Mike Catalana
We will get to that another day.
Dan Fates
Yes. And I will shout out Danzari.
Mike Catalana
Shout out Brother Bill.
Dan Fates
Sorry, Brother Bill. I got you here.
Mike Catalana
We'll get to that. Yeah. Predictions. Last week before the Broncos. Broncos game, I thought it was going to be a game described by four letters. Those were U, G, L and Y. Now they're going to be I. I'm not going to spell it.
Jenna Cottrell
G, L, I, E, R. Uglier.
Dan Fates
There we go.
Mike Catalana
So look, this is just a bad time, as I've said, for Joe Brady to take over on a short week and all of these things. Last game, the. The last time. Week one, when they played the Jets. Dion Dawkins, when this game was going back and forth, kind of looked over at me. It's like these guys always just play them tough. Like they. This jets team knows how to dirty up ugly up games.
Dan Fates
It's.
Mike Catalana
What? It's their only chance because they can't get into some shootout. I have this game 8 to 5. I think this game's a baseball. Like it's just gonna be a gross football game. I'm so happy I'm not in the sidelines for this one.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, it'll be me.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
So now I need to get more in depth here. Is it two field goals and a safety?
Mike Catalana
Yes. Wow.
Stefan Diggs
Wow.
Mike Catalana
Two field Goals in Zach Wilson or Lov skiing out of the back of the end zone.
Dan Fates
That would be so good.
Jenna Cottrell
Okay, I have the Bills winning this game.
Mike Catalana
I don't have a touchdown in the game.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, I can tell. Math, football, math. I think that there's going to be an offensive explosion. I think the Bills are going to win this one. 21 to 12.
Dan Fates
Three touchdowns.
Jenna Cottrell
Three.
Dan Fates
In this economy.
Jenna Cottrell
In this economy. Maybe some field goals added in. No, I think. Oh, crickets. I think for this team, it's all about Josh Allen. And I think that Joe Brady does have a huge challenge this week going against an insanely talented jets offense or defense. Oh, my God. I think for this Bills team, it's about the focus on them and getting back to the basics that they've seen and. And just having plays that Josh Allen adores and letting Josh kind of free things up, making sure he's smart with the football, no turnovers, but also having. Implementing both explosive plays, those chunk plays that they want to try, and then having Josh take some of the stuff underneath. By doing that, I think that allows you to see Allen and his personality come out. But at the same point, it's not going to be some crazy offense where you're. Josh is throwing for four touchdowns and it's 350 yards. I think it's a way to be both mindful of the fact that they're playing a really talented team in the jets, in the defense, but also that change of pace, that new energy. And Joe Brady, I don't think he'll be able to do a ton in terms of the playbook because it's such a short week. But at the same moment, I think it'll just be good to have new blood in that room.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
A new voice for Josh Allen here on the game.
Dan Fates
The jets haven't just done it against Josh Allen. They did a great job opening day. I mean, they made Jalen Hurts look like he'd never played before. I've never seen Patrick Mahomes. I guess when he was sick against Denver, he didn't play well, but when he's healthy, they had him. They should have won that game.
Mike Catalana
The jets was the better quarterback.
Dan Fates
Yeah, we were joking that it was like Taylor Swift's second game. It was. What was it on part of my take. Yeah, they were saying is like, if she's probably sitting there going, oh, my.
Mike Catalana
Gosh, this Zach Wilson is better than Joe.
Jenna Cottrell
He's good.
Dan Fates
Well, if you'd never seen the NFL before, he was good. But they can make quarterbacks look terrible. So that's the case. But I do think the move to Joe Brady now does give the Bill something. Robert Salah knew what they could do defensively against the Bills. They had done it multiple times. Even the game the Bills won at home last year, they gave him hell the entire game. I think the Joe Brady move mixes it up a little bit. I think they changed some stuff. Not as predictable and look, because it just wasn't working against the Jets. So I think it changes it a little bit. But when I see an ugly game, I like an ugly score, so it makes sense. So I have the bills winning it 16 to 11.
Mike Catalana
That is ugly.
Jenna Cottrell
I feel like I'm just trying to speak it into existence that there's some touchdowns because I'll be on the field. What? You scared me.
Mike Catalana
I was gonna say speaking things into existence. My last point. And part of that, like, being safe and all this stuff, like you said, not turning the ball over. Obviously, Josh has an interception in six straight games. Is there a get. Do you get to a point where you're talking about, I don't want to turn the ball over. I don't want to turn the ball over. I don't want to turn the ball over. That you then turn the ball over because you're thinking about it so much. My wife is always worried about, like, don't get in a car accident. Don't get in a car accident. She's always worried about cars. I go, if you get in your car every day and think, oh, I hope I don't get a car accident today. You might get into a car accident. I never think of that. But if you're speaking those things, if you're. I don't want Josh to think I can't turn the ball over. I want Josh to play free. That's my point.
Dan Fates
Yeah. Well, at least I think it's valid. I think his plan has been, let me have a turnover right away. In every game, he seems to be throwing it.
Mike Catalana
I mean, he's like, it's the same play that Dorsey calls.
Dan Fates
Stop calling that play like they.
Jenna Cottrell
They will.
Mike Catalana
Peterson knows. Knows what? What's coming.
Jenna Cottrell
They can't call that. That's got to be ripped up and thrown.
Dan Fates
But he's had, what, seven interceptions in his last six games?
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Gotta stop.
Jenna Cottrell
There's a way to be. To play freer and not turn over the.
Dan Fates
You. You have three touchdowns, 300 yards and an interception. Not a big deal.
Mike Catalana
Not all interceptions are created equal.
Jenna Cottrell
Thousand percent.
Dan Fates
Yes.
Jenna Cottrell
Thousand percent.
Dan Fates
Well, we're parsing Interceptions now, but I.
Jenna Cottrell
I think that is.
Dan Fates
And the last important.
Jenna Cottrell
Dan, would you say nuance?
Mike Catalana
Nope.
Jenna Cottrell
No, he doesn't like. No, he doesn't. He doesn't like. He can't spell it. That's why.
Dan Fates
But I will say this. The other thing is, Josh should be freed up to run.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Dan Fates
Run smart.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes. Josh was not on the injury report this week.
Dan Fates
No. Run. Run smart.
Mike Catalana
Run like Russ.
Dan Fates
Oh, my God. I said to Jenna during the game, Russell Wilson plays. If I got thrown out there. So, Mike, you got to take a snap. I would be doing Russell. Like, who can I just throw this ball to and slide?
Jenna Cottrell
Fine.
Dan Fates
Yeah, he was smart, pleaded. Very smart game. Manage the whole thing.
Jenna Cottrell
Thousand percent right. I'm saying is sexy.
Dan Fates
But Josh needs to have a version of that to his game. You know, forget Russ Mahomes. The way Mahomes runs, so frustrating to everybody else. He runs and he slides or he goes out of bounds. He doesn't take the big hits.
Jenna Cottrell
I feel like he runs on his. On his toes.
Dan Fates
But he finds a way.
Jenna Cottrell
No, he does. Absolutely.
Dan Fates
He finds a way.
Jenna Cottrell
So Josh should be more like Patrick Mahomes is what you're saying?
Dan Fates
Yeah, I think that would be good.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, okay. Yeah. Wow. How could you be so controversial?
Dan Fates
That's the way I am.
Jenna Cottrell
All right. Anything else, gentlemen? No, no.
Dan Fates
Love the digs, though.
Jenna Cottrell
Love, love.
Dan Fates
This is our Stefan Diggs.
Jenna Cottrell
Stefan Diggs. No. Everyone has been really cool and kind about it, so we always appreciate it. We're really excited to be here.
Dan Fates
Janet, we're gonna have to move that.
Jenna Cottrell
No, I love it. I love it. I gotta be closer. I gotta be closer to the beep button, though.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, that's it.

Buffalo Plus: Stefon Diggs Sounds Off on Being Fully Invested with the Buffalo Bills & Joe Brady Loves Josh Allen
November 17, 2023 — Hosts: Mike Catalana, Jenna Cottrell, Dan Fetes
This episode dives into the current pulse of the Buffalo Bills following the firing of offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and the promotion of Joe Brady. It focuses on two central storylines: Stefon Diggs addressing ongoing rumors about his commitment to Buffalo—especially after his brother's critical tweets—and the introduction of Joe Brady as interim offensive coordinator, highlighting his approach to reigniting Josh Allen’s confidence. The hosts offer behind-the-scenes insights, player reactions, and debate the keys to turning the Bills' season around ahead of a crucial matchup with the New York Jets.
Trayvon Diggs' Tweets: Diggs' brother tweeted about "getting 14 out of there" during the Bills' recent struggles, prompting questions to Stefon about his own commitment.
Stefon Diggs’ Professional Response: Diggs made it clear the tweets are his brother’s opinion, not his own. He expressed frustration at continually having to answer questions about his desire to remain a Bill.
“It's like I've repeatedly had to say the same thing twice to multiple people… I've never really said anything about being unhappy… so when you draw conclusions as to stuff I've never said, that's what kind of troubles me.”
— Stefon Diggs (04:02)
Media and Fan Reaction: The hosts agreed that Diggs handled the situation admirably and pointed out his actions as a leader and star performer have consistently shown he’s invested in the team.
Comparison to 90s Bills: The panel reminisced about more dramatic locker rooms in the past, suggesting the current Stefon Diggs situation is blown out of proportion by social media and pundits.
“What else do you want him to say besides getting like a Buffalo Bill tattooed on his face?”
— Mike Catalana (06:15)
Recent Performance Issues: The hosts note Allen's uncharacteristically low energy and waning confidence amid a rough offensive stretch, citing missed opportunities, turnovers, and the impact on team morale.
Joe Brady’s New Role & Approach: New interim OC Joe Brady brings energy, authenticity, and direct positivity toward Allen.
“Give me Josh Allen all day, every day. I'm not worried about it... I believe Josh Allen is the best quarterback in the NFL, and it excites me that I get an opportunity to call plays with him.”
— Joe Brady (16:33)
Rebuilding Josh’s Swagger: The team emphasizes Allen’s need to rekindle his former confident, aggressive play, not just for himself but as a catalyst for offensive improvement. There’s a consensus that Allen’s teammates and coaches need to support and encourage him actively.
“He should walk out on the field like, ‘I’m the baddest man in the world.’ Go out there and play like Josh Allen.”
— Dan Fates (14:16)
“Gas Him Up”: Hosts debate the fine line between reckless play and excessive caution. They advocate for calculated risk-taking and freeing Allen from “playing with kid gloves.”
Tactical Adjustments: Suggestions include mixing the running and passing games, letting Allen take more downfield shots to rebuild rhythm and confidence, adjusted for a tough Jets defense this week.
Managing Expectations: There’s realism about what can be established in just a week after a midseason coordinator change, especially given the short turnaround for the Jets game.
“He’s making mistakes on simple reads and simple plays because I feel like he’s afraid of making mistakes. So, he’s almost being overly cautious.”
— Mike Catalana (23:03)
Predictions for the Jets Game (34:22–39:24):
Media Scrutiny: The team discusses how quickly national commentators have turned on Buffalo and Allen after years of hyping them.
The Need for Nuance: They stress the complexity of the situation; Josh Allen can be both great and in need of improvement.
Key to the Season: All agree the priority is restoring Allen’s energy, “letting Josh be Josh,” and supporting him holistically.
“The biggest thing is getting Josh Allen’s confidence back.”
— Jenna Cottrell (30:43)
The conversation is candid, lighthearted, and loaded with local expertise. The hosts blend humor (including jokes about soundboards and “buttons”) with pointed analysis, balancing optimism with hard truths about the team’s performance and outlook. The podcast provides valuable context, direct locker-room insight, and level-headed takes—making this a strong episode for any fan seeking honest commentary beyond standard national narratives.
