And there's a lot of bad that we can talk about, and we will. It's just one loss. Like, I'm not. I'm not leaving Baltimore hitting any sort of panic button. There are things that need to be addressed this game. I thought about this game in two things. The Bills got punched in the mouth to start the game with a Derrick Henry long touchdown run, and the Bills shot themselves in the foot with a trick play that killed any momentum of a comeback. This is the Buffalo plus podcast, brought to you by Connors and Ferris.

Hey, everybody. Welcome to the Buffalo plus YouTube channel. Presented by Connors and Ferris, Mike Catalano along with Dan Fates. Please, as always, make sure to, like, comment and subscribe.
Dan Fates
It'll make you feel better.
Mike Catalano
I wonder when people are watching this because we talk about it when it's a loss. Does it take until maybe. Are you watching this Monday afternoon? Maybe you've gotten over. You talked to a few of your friends, and then you're like, I want to hear something about the game. Or is it first thing Monday morning?
Dan Fates
Or is it just rip the band aid off?
Mike Catalano
Rip the band aid off.
Dan Fates
When you listen to the Buffalo plus podcast. Yes.
Mike Catalano
Let us know, because sometimes we. We're recording this. Well, as you can tell, they always love to make noise behind us when we're on the field. But this is such a rarity, Dan, for this game. Most telling, this Bills team doesn't lose games like this. In the regular season, it had been 43 consecutive games where if they lost, it was by six points or less. Yeah, they lost by 25.
Dan Fates
Yeah, the Ravens played bully ball.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
The Bills got a taste of their own medicine for what they did for the last two weeks. And there's a lot of bad that we can talk about, and we will. It's just one loss. Like, I'm not leaving Baltimore hitting any sort of panic button. There are things that need to be addressed this game. I thought about this game in two things. The Bills got punched in the mouth to start the game with a Derrick Henry long touchdown run. And the Bills shot themselves in the foot with a trick play that killed any momentum of a comeback. That's how I look at this game. There are things they need to fix up, but whether it's fun, whether it's three points or 30, it's a loss. We talk about pretty wins, right?
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
There are ugly wins and there are pretty wins. There are ugly losses and there are close losses. This is just a loss.
Mike Catalano
The only thing that I will push back on that a little Bit on. There's times you lose ugly. You turn it over five times. The other team just makes some crazy plays. This was a physical beatdown on both lines of scrimmage. This was from the very first play. 87 yards. This team doesn't give up big plays either. Defensively, 87 yards for Derrick Henry. Perfectly blocked. No one touched him, right? No, he went right through. But it wasn't just that play.
Dan Fates
No.
Mike Catalano
When they needed it, they averaged 7.9 yards per offensive play. Now you take that play out and they still Average, I think, 6.3.
Janet
Yeah.
Mike Catalano
So a lot of yards.
Dan Fates
You can't take that play out. Derrick Henry ran for almost 200 yards. You don't get to take that play out.
Mike Catalano
I'm saying is the numbers can be skewed based on one play.
Dan Fates
Oh, no.
Mike Catalano
The rest of the game. That's more telling than the long play to me. Every time they needed yardage, every time they needed the third down conversions, they got it. They blocked it up. They made a play. The Bills defense in general, but the defensive line got pushed around.
Dan Fates
We've talked the last two weeks about the Bobby Babbage masterclass and the Joe Brady masterclass that he put on. This was. They got their lunch handed to them.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
This was a. They got taken to school by John Harbaugh, this running attack. They were more physical. They had a better scheme. This was my fear heading into this game. That's why this doesn't surprise me. This one. This is what the Ravens do. They win primetime games at home. They are now 213 over their last 24 games here. This is what they. This atmosphere was electric from the start. The Bills did nothing to take that out. The Ravens fed off that. And that was where I think the ball started to roll downhill.
Mike Catalano
I'm gonna say it so Dan doesn't have to because he wanted to be wrong. It's so hard for you to be wrong, isn't it? He picked the Ravens. Janet and I picked the Bills. We looked bad in picking this one because it wasn't close.
Dan Fates
Again, I wanted to be wrong.
Janet
But.
Dan Fates
But this was the physical. This was a game. And as we can maybe start with the defense and where they. They struggled and where they were out, schemed out, executed, they were exploited, all of those things. This was a game that you really bleep and missed your best three players on defense, Milano, Taron Johnson and Terrell Bernard.
Janet
Yeah.
Mike Catalano
Now, on the plus side, they're here, like these guys are here. And Taron Johnson, hopefully, certainly Terrell Bernard. Seems to be trending towards coming back. So it is nice to say, hey, we need help on defense and you have those guys. But again, I don't like the fact that it was the physical nature and they knew it was going to be Derrick Henry and he was prime Derrick Henry in this one. Like he was phenomenal in the game.
Dan Fates
We could go through each level of the defense and talk about where they failed or where they were dominated. And the safeties were a big problem. And I've kind of defended the safeties up into this point. I'm not going to give them a full pass tonight, but I. My first thing as I look at this game, right. I thought Balin Spector was going to be put on an island. I thought Dorian Williams could be put on an island. And he was, he got, he got.
Mike Catalano
He said when he talked to him afterward, he goes, I gotta do better in coverage than that. He got burned bad on that play.
Dan Fates
Right. But to me, I don't. I'm not looking for Dorian Williams to cover.
Mike Catalano
I look gotta cover a little as a linebacker.
Dan Fates
Agreed.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
But I thought he made some really nice tackles. He did okay. I look at him as an AJ Klein. The guy flies downhill, throws his body around, goes sideline to sideline, smashing helmets. Okay, that was good. I want to know where the hell was Von Miller? Where the hell was Ed Oliver? Where was Greg Russo? Because Lamar Jackson had all day to look like an elite passer. That was where they got their stuff pushed in. Yeah, that was. That's the thing that I was fearing and that's the thing that I saw. This was a. Where the Bills were playing bully ball, physical smash mouth football. They got a taste of that tonight.
Janet
Yeah.
Mike Catalano
And it wasn't just that play. That's what I'm saying is they did not set the edge. They got around them all the time. And I never heard Von's name, never came up the whole time. I mean, Rousseau made a few tackles, but there was no real pressure. Ed got lit up on that first play he did. And Henry ran right by him, Ran through all, obviously all three levels of the defense. No one got a hand on him and he went. But it wasn't just those plays. And when you mentioned the whole defense, third and 14, when they went to Nelson Aguilar, the run by Lamar for the first down, third and long times when you needed to get off the field. Screen gang killed him.
Dan Fates
Screen game killed that experience. That's lack of experience in that spot. Reading cues. Sean talked about it after the game. They need to have a better feel for the game. The Bills were on their heels the entire night defensively. Whether Lamar handed it off, whether he took it and pulled it out of Henry's gut and ran around the outside. They did what? They toyed with the Bills defense. Babich got put in a blender tonight. It happens.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
This. This doesn't mean you blow everything up. I had people also, as. We can move if you want to move to the offensive side.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Joe Brady doesn't know what he's doing. He's all. He said he was going to be a head coach last week.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Now all of a sudden, it happens. Nobody's perfect. Joe Brady, I thought he got away from himself a little bit tonight. And then obviously the big blunder was the trick play.
Mike Catalano
All right, so let's go to that before we go to the rest of the offense and let's talk about the circumstance. Here they are getting blown out. They go in at halftime. They come out, they get a stop.
Dan Fates
Great stop.
Mike Catalano
They get the ball. Josh Allen's play. So I tweeted out that they always say, like, there's only a few guys in the NFL that can make that throw. There is one guy in the NFL who makes that play. And you've seen the stat of within 6 inches or a foot of out of bounds. Josh has three touchdowns, 130 yards, like, whatever. The rest of the NFL is one for 16. He's the only guy who makes that play. Incredible to Shakir, sets up the touchdown. Then they get the ball back and they're down 11 driving down the field. And they are not a trick play team.
Dan Fates
Nope.
Mike Catalano
Now, let me ask you this. Well, you know what? Let's hear from Sean McDermott about what. How that play came about being called.
Sean McDermott
You know, most of the time. Not most of the time, it's during the. During the week. We talk about it, you know. So again, that's something that Joe and I will discuss at length. And I'm sure he wants that call back. I do as well. And we'll learn from that move forward.
Josh Allen
You know, coach called a shot and, you know, the guy made a good play. That's as simple as this. He dove inside. I tried to stay out, and I was just trying to get rid of the ball. And guy made a good play and that's what it comes down to.
Mike Catalano
So Sean's always on the page with his coaches, publicly talks about it. Sounded to me like he wasn't all in on that play call.
Dan Fates
The fact that they had talked about it during the week, but then when the play's implemented is Brady's call. Brady's not checking with Sean before every play going, I'm going to run this play. I'm going to run this play. He's the O.C. he's the play caller. That one, though Sean said he wants it back. Brady wants it back. And they gotta learn from it.
Mike Catalano
They gotta learn from it. And the other thing I would say about a trick play, you have Josh Allen on the field. Okay. If you are running a trick play and Josh Allen, in my mind, Josh probably shouldn't be part of it. Meaning, like, yes, I'm gonna run a trick play. I'm gonna snap the ball to Curtis Samuel. I'm gonna keep Josh Allen on the side because they're gonna go, where the hell's Josh Allen? Because it's Josh Allen. And then you go another way and maybe somebody's wide open, you pitch it back to Josh Allen. I don't know. You know, a friend of ours played college football, tweeted out. I gotta wonder, did that play even fool the scout team when they were doing it? It looked like a terrible execution of a terrible play.
Dan Fates
Yeah. And I'm not trying to let Joe Brady off the hook because I thought it was a boneheaded play. That was the first time they got the ground game going. James Cook had like five, six, seven rushing carries in a row that went five, six, seven yards. They started to gain momentum. I don't know. Not in the building. I don't know when the best time to call a trick play is, but I know that wasn't it.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
When you started, and I'll tell you this, James Cook was livid on the sidelines.
Mike Catalano
Livid.
Dan Fates
I'm trying to film Josh to see because he. Not only that he's crushed on the play. You're worried about his arm and shoulder as he fumbles it. But Cook was livid because I feel like the Bills started to finally find momentum. That doesn't feel to be the time when you go and try and get cute with it. You finally were had momentum. You were enforcing it. You were giving the body blows trying to land an uppercut. And that just isn't what it is.
Mike Catalano
I have a problem with a trick play. To your point about they had the momentum. But I still sit there and I look at it and I go, who was that supposed to fool? I'm looking in the Bills backfield and there is Josh Allen standing there. So they flip it back to him. Everybody runs towards him anyway, There was.
Dan Fates
Two guys to him before the ball flipped to him.
Mike Catalano
Josh's mistake was doing what he does, still trying to make a play, and it was a disaster. He gets hit, the ball comes out, and the game is.
Dan Fates
Josh was asked about it. He said, coach called a shot, their guy made a play. It's as simple as that. Josh was. I'll say this about Josh. He was calm in the postgame press conference. He pretty much said, we ran into a buzz saw tonight that kicked our ass. These games happen. And then he gives you the I'm glad this happened earlier in the year so we can learn from the dicks about that. I don't think there's ever a good time to get your ass kicked like the Bills did. But there is, to me, a sense of calmness, of this is what the Ravens do. They're a good team. They had them off balance. They were the more physical team, especially defensively, right from the get go. Khalil Shakir got laid out, James Cook got popped. You sense that right away. And that's what Josh said. They were ready off the jump and we weren't. They had urgency. We didn't. That's something I think you can learn from.
Janet
Yeah.
Mike Catalano
And we also keep in mind, it is the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore. They could have beaten the Chiefs. They should have beaten the Raiders. They were blowing out the Cowboys. But my concern about this is did it expose some things about this team physically? Not about just losing the game. It's just a game. But it's when teams go bully them and they don't have a counterpunch. Now, let's get to the offense, because while we all love, everybody eats in a game like this, you're down. You need to air it out and you need guys to make plays. And let's start with the bad for Keon Coleman.
Dan Fates
Yep.
Mike Catalano
Gotta make that catch.
Dan Fates
Phenomenal throw.
Mike Catalano
Incredible. Right on the money. Somebody compared it to the Diggs drop in the playoffs. This was an easier catch. I know he's a rookie, but he's. You gotta make that play.
Dan Fates
Yep. When the team needed it, they. They needed it.
Mike Catalano
Now, I give him credit. Came back, had two excellent catches, three overall. Bounced back right away. Josh went back to him. That was great. But, Dan, you're down there on the field, man. When Baltimore is attacking and you need separation, there's nobody getting separation.
Janet
No.
Dan Fates
And he was off twice with Mack. Hollins threw it behind him. Josh was constantly off his spot, was constantly. To his credit. He found a way to escape to his right. He's lethal. Rolling to his right. Defenses don't want him to do that, but he was able to do it. But this was when this everybody eats philosophy runs into a speed bump of you need guys to win one on one battles. And they didn't have that tonight. The Khalil play was their biggest play. The Josh freek throw for 54 yards. Besides that, everything was a grind. And when you get like that, that's where it helps to a number one guy that you can say, let's draw some plays up and get that guy involved. They didn't have that.
Janet
Yeah.
Mike Catalano
And to have speed to get behind people and maybe make a play.
Janet
And they didn't have that.
Mike Catalano
Man, we are just a magnet for these kind of things. They always come to us.
Dan Fates
We should get him in the pot.
Mike Catalano
Please. Thank you. Come to my house. Take care of the leaves. Yeah, I do want to talk about some 4th down calls. Sean twice early punted the ball on 4th down. He went for it early. They got it. The next time it was fourth and two and they punted. And I know a lot of you were tweeting or people were tweeting. You know, you're not taking. Yes, go for it every time then. Because my issue with them not going for it longer than a or out of desperation. My issue was you're getting your ass kicked on the offensive line. You know, Josh threw on the third down. He got hit, fall back.
Dan Fates
That's where analytics doesn't always work. The analytics are system and numbers and that's what it is. The feel of the game was the Bills were getting pushed back on every single snap. So why would you just run your head into a brick wall? I didn't mind it early on the second one. I thought he punted it again. The second time he was going to go for it on fourth down.
Janet
Yeah.
Dan Fates
With a minute 30. And then they Ravens called two timeouts in a row. They gave it to him. So that was more of the desperation one. I thought early in the game if you could get a stop and play a little field position, I wasn't totally against it.
Mike Catalano
Well, he was trying to try somewhat to give your defense something because they were getting pushed around. But look, when it doesn't work, it's a bad decision, Right. They kick to him, they drive down the field. I like them being aggressive, but man, their O line had played really well for two weeks. They got pushed around in this one. All right. And then Tyler Bass, the game was decided pretty much, right? You're down big late down 16. But you need to make that kick 46 yards and it really wasn't close.
Dan Fates
Close.
Mike Catalano
And there's guys kicking him 56. Heck, 66 in this league. He made the earlier one. Great. Sean said they still have confidence in him. I don't know if they do.
Dan Fates
I've said he's been one kick away for these last two weeks since they brought in a kicker. He had an extra point blocked. He made a kick late against Jacksonville. It would have cut it to a two score game. It would have given. It would have maybe opened the door just a crack.
Mike Catalano
Right.
Dan Fates
No real excuse though, because that's not even a massive pressure kick.
Mike Catalano
No, but there is some level of importance to the kick.
Dan Fates
100%.
Mike Catalano
And he failed at it.
Dan Fates
Yep.
Mike Catalano
And he failed at it. And he's done this multiple times. And honestly, I gotta bring somebody in again. I gotta maybe get him on the practice squad. At worst case, I gotta be ready because it keeps happening in doses where we see it and we're not talking about 58 yard kicks. These are in the NFL now. 46 is basically a chip shot in this league.
Dan Fates
You don't want again, as these games get bigger, you don't want to be sitting there going, do I trust my kicker?
Mike Catalano
I want for all of you that would say to us, leave Bass alone. Don't say, I want to know how much confidence you have when he lines.
Janet
Up for a kick.
Mike Catalano
Yeah, how much do you have? Because I've lost that feeling we used to have again.
Dan Fates
I defended early on in the year because the sample size at the end of last year was still more good than bad. The sample size now is getting bigger for the bad, smaller for the good. We're trying to find kicks, we're trying to compliment, oh, well, this was good, or that was good, or we're trying to make excuses for the mate for the misses. It's getting too hard at this point.
Mike Catalano
And look, you hope to compete with Kansas City. They got the best kicker in the league, Right. So we've seen that happen before. Maybe you're not going to have him, but you got to have better than they have now. It depends with the other issues they're dealing with, how high of a priority this is. But if I was Tyler Bass, I'd be concerned. Yeah, well, we'll see. All right. It's the first of three straight on the road. You guys know what's coming next. A Houston team that won, but looks vulnerable, but is finding ways when they win. They're good, they're not great, but they can move the football. So it's going to take an effort next week.
Dan Fates
I said it before this game. I like the Bills in Houston.
Mike Catalano
Look at Dan coming right back. That's right. So we'll see back next week.
Dan Fates
This is the way of the NFL. We have now seen it through four weeks. The Bills were crowned as Josh is the MVP and all this stuff. The Bills were left humbled. And the offense of Everybody eats was left hungry. This is what they got to work on.
Mike Catalano
Yeah, no doubt about it.
Dan Fates
And they need to get healthy on defense.
Janet
Yes.
Dan Fates
One other note. Khalil Shakira finished the game. Toughed it out because he's a football player again. Amazing catch. Did leave the game or did leave the locker room in a walking boot. Will be something to keep an eye on this week moving forward. Taylor Ratmus left the game, did not return. Just a car accident on the field. Tried to tackle Derrick Henry as well as Connor McGovern. Weird situation there, if you're wondering about that. Sean said he got checked out. They thought he was clear. Cleared by the people upstairs, the independent neurologists. He went back in the game. The ref said no. We got flagged again to have you come back down. Miscommunication. It feels like McGovern finished the game. That all seems fine. But it was weird at that time.
Mike Catalano
And you were the one who noticed the walking boot. It does happen sometimes. If you remember the Tampa game a few years ago with Josh, he walked in the press conference with a walking boot, walked out, played the next week.
Dan Fates
Shakir finished the game.
Mike Catalano
Finished the game. If it's anything swelling and all, they take care of that.
Dan Fates
Yep.
Mike Catalano
Hopefully for Shakir and the Bills, it's just a precaution. But we'll see how he is for this week. All right, that's going to do it for us. We thank you for watching. We know it's not easy to go over such a bad game like this, but we're here to talk about the Bills. Win, lose or whatever this was here in Baltimore.
Dan Fates
Not great, Bob.
Mike Catalano
The crab cakes were pretty good.
Dan Fates
I had a hot dog at halftime.
Mike Catalano
We had crab cakes.
Dan Fates
And we didn't save any food for later.
Mike Catalano
I know. Rookie mistake.
Dan Fates
I got two bags of chips.
Mike Catalano
Sweet. All right, that's going to do it for us. For Dan Fates. I'm Mike Catalana. Please make sure to, like, comment and subscribe and we'll see you next time on oh, look, now they're walking out. Now they make all that noise while we're talking. They walk out like like they're proud of themselves. They are. Look at them. Damn. Anyhow, thanks for watching. We'll see you next time.

Release Date: September 30, 2024
Hosts: Mike Catalana, Jenna Cottrell, Dan Fates
This episode dives deep into the Buffalo Bills’ humbling 25-point loss to the Baltimore Ravens—a rare blowout for this team during the regular season. The Buffalo Plus crew (Mike, Jenna, Dan) provide emotional, on-field analysis about what went so wrong, why it’s not a time to panic, and what must change going forward. The conversation traverses defensive collapses, a costly trick play, personnel absences, playcalling controversies, and questions about the team’s physicality and resilience.
Despite the disappointment and physical drubbing, the hosts remain balanced—acknowledging both the rarity of such a loss and the urgency for better answers. The consensus: It’s not panic time, but the Bills must regroup physically and mentally for a tough upcoming schedule.
