I think, I don't think I've ever been more excited about something. When we hit a thousand subscribers, that
Jenna Cottrell
was a, that was a big deal.
Mike Catalana
Big deal.
Dan Fates
And like, not to get all sentimental, I didn't expect the community that has become Buffalo Plus.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Jenna Cottrell
Thousand percent.
Dan Fates
Now from the Connors and Ferris podcast studio. This is the Buffalo plus podcast.
Jenna Cottrell
Welcome back to the Buffalo plus podcast. Mike Catalana, Dan Fates, I am Jenna Cottrell. Please be sure to like, comment, subscribe and share. We are here today in the Connors and Ferris podcast studio. We're going to be talking about the origin story of Buffalo plus how the channel got started as well as our backstories. We even have some bloopers for you. We're also going to talk a little bit about the Bills where they're at. They have their six week off summer break before the start of training camp. So we. Where the team is at. But a lot of fun in this episode today. And this was sent in to us from Josh Martin. The question of how Buffalo plus got started. A very loyal viewer, so we want to make sure we answer that. Also before we get into everything, just want to remind people we'll also have the travel draft coming up.
Mike Catalana
That's a huge one this year.
Jenna Cottrell
Dan, myself, we pick which road games we want to go to as well as the punishments.
Mike Catalana
So aren't you really just deciding how much time you want to spend with me?
Jenna Cottrell
I never thought about it like that.
Dan Fates
That's.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Sometimes you want to stagger road trips.
Mike Catalana
You need.
Jenna Cottrell
You need a buffer.
Dan Fates
I got that wedding. This. That weekend.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, you can take that one. I got another wedding. Yeah.
Dan Fates
And some of that stuff.
Mike Catalana
Tournament.
Dan Fates
Some of that stuff's pending because we're trying to figure out some things that are coming up with hopefully live shows, taking the show on the road, going to other cities. So we're going to. All that stuff's trying to get worked out as obviously the Bills now are on summer break. Some of the funner. Evergreen Fun.
Mike Catalana
Funner.
Dan Fates
Funner is not a word no more.
Jenna Cottrell
You can use it.
Dan Fates
Yeah, it's. I mean out of all the words I've used on this channel, that was a gooder word.
Mike Catalana
Thank you.
Dan Fates
Funner. I think funner. I think funner plays. Especially some of the content we.
Mike Catalana
If you were nine.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, perfect. What were you gonna say about a funner, funner content? Like this is like more fun content ahead.
Dan Fates
Well, this is also the.
Jenna Cottrell
Thanks for sticking with us. Let's get started today.
Mike Catalana
Sorry.
Dan Fates
Hey, Roberta, sorry about this, but like the Fact is that obviously now, most of the actual offseason, the mini camps, the OTAs, all that stuff is now over. There's only so much you can break down. We will discuss and be going through the position groups and be going through rosters as we get closer to training camp. But there's also just time to. We have to do our punishment. Eat some hot wings, read some really good.
Mike Catalana
What do you mean we have to do our punishment? Who has to do their punishment?
Dan Fates
We all do.
Jenna Cottrell
No,
Mike Catalana
you finished in last. Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
You lost. Is this breaking news to Dan?
Mike Catalana
We tied for first.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. That means you lost.
Mike Catalana
He's legitimately stuck. First of all.
Dan Fates
Wait.
Mike Catalana
Credit to me. He stopped talking.
Dan Fates
Wait, what? I'm the only one that's gonna eat the wigs?
Mike Catalana
No, we may join in.
Jenna Cottrell
We may. Yeah, we might join in. We gotta find some good comments.
Dan Fates
You guys also did do it twice because Mike forgot to record the one
Jenna Cottrell
time there was no audio.
Dan Fates
The one. There was audio. That's what it was.
Jenna Cottrell
That was. That was. That was not Mike and it was not Jenna. No, but it happens. Stuff happens. Okay, so the Bills right now have a six week break before the start of training camp. Before we get into all the fun about the channel, what is this time for the team? What are the players doing? What does this look like?
Mike Catalana
That's an interesting question because we asked a few players and a few of them are like, hey, I'm training. Like, I'm getting myself ready. Think it depends on who you are. Some players don't have as much playbook stuff to worry about. They've been through it a lot. They're adapting already to what they're doing. They're getting themselves ready. But this is not like 1986 here. Like, these guys, for the most part, are in shape and ready to go. It's about maintaining that training schedule, getting themselves ready. Look, this is also a time for them to have some family time, friends time, because there is no commitment. There can't be a commitment. The league gives them this time off. But I think it depends on who you are. Right? Because some guys are like, I can't afford to be lax at all. Because when I get in, in July, at the end, when camp starts, I gotta be ready to play.
Dan Fates
Yeah. Josh even said. I remember asking him at the voluntary OTAs, like, will you get. He's had so much change with wide receivers in season last year, it just kept, like, they kept trying to add guys that he would have to get acclimated with. And he said, you know, mainly with DJ Moore. And he said that he will get the guys together out in California at some point. At the end of the month, he said give them a few weeks off, then get together. So, like, you've always seen Tom Brady and the guys working out, and you'll see that with a lot of teams around the league. But Josh will get the guys together separately, you know, individually, away from the team, because, like you said, the league mandates it.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. Which makes sense. I feel like it's a time for some of the more established players to take a little bit of time off, but also know that they have training camp coming up.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
And I do think it's interesting. Joe Brady's talked so much about how he wants this to be the hardest training camp that they've gone through, and I. I feel like that's kind of not surprising, because obviously, as a new coach, you want to set what you're doing. You want to set the. The bar high. But I was kind of surprised to hear that because I feel like sometimes I think of that of, like, you want it to be challenging. But it's also training camp.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. I mean, it's put ball down. Yes. It's going to also be narrative season to say they're. They're ready because it was hard. Like, we have also heard people comment that players got hurt because practice was too hard and players got tired because there was too much asked of them. So I. I think.
Jenna Cottrell
Sorry. No, no. It sounded like you said too much ass. Sorry, not I.
Mike Catalana
Too much was asked of them.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Mike Catalana
And so I say this. I think he wants the players to have the mindset coming in. We're going to work. Who was it that talked? Yeah, he was like, wow. I was, like, tired after that. Yeah, that's cool. They're tired. They're out there in shorts in the spring.
Dan Fates
So we've heard stories about that with Andy Reid and Jason Kelsey.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
That they had an Andy Reid drill where they go to a certain point, then they have to come back and go all the way down the field. And Jason Kelsey famously said it was, like, the hardest rookie practice that he had ever had.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Dan Fates
And then at the end of it, it's hot and all this stuff, and he's laying face down, and Andy Regis comes up to him and is like, all right. He's like, yeah, just keep going on with practice. I'll just lay here for a little bit. So, like, kind of McGovern said, like, it was a hard practice, but the energy stayed up, the tempo stayed up with Joe and all those things. And Dion, I think, even mentioned it, too. They're only eight weeks into Joe Brady as the head coach. But Deanne kind of said, like, as far as right now, like, it's been going well. Like, we always said, it better be
Mike Catalana
going well now, right.
Dan Fates
Outside of maybe the Cleveland Browns, like, things are seemingly going well for most teams.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. As they should be.
Dan Fates
And not the Patriots. Well, maybe now the Patriots.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
They got a little positive pr.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. Okay. All right. Anything else we want to touch on in terms of the break or anything around that?
Dan Fates
Yeah, I think it's also like we talked about at the end of the last. The mandatory minicamp recap. Like, it is tough to be too excited, too worked up over workouts, in pajamas. Like, it.
Mike Catalana
You know, that was Joe's word.
Jenna Cottrell
Pajamas. Yeah.
Dan Fates
Yes.
Mike Catalana
Yes.
Dan Fates
Like, this isn't real football. And you even hear Sean talk about it over the years of, like, hey, how's Duncan Kate look this year? And he's like, why don't we wait till we get pads on? Like, why don't we wait? Like, let's temper expectations for some of the new guys. Some of the guys coming in, some of the guys coming back. Like, what your expectations are for all this. It's great to see Landon Jackson look bigger. It's great to see C.J. gardner. Johnson. Johnson. Be loud and bring an attitude and an edge and. And these linebackers and all these things. They're playing touch football. Like, let's all keep everything into perspective as we get going into the summer.
Jenna Cottrell
I know. And it's not as fun to do that, but I do think it's important because it can help you set your expectations on certain players, because it's easy to be like, oh, I see this, and it's going to be amazing. And I. You want that, and you hope that is the case. But I do think sometimes it's important to be like, okay, well, it's. It's June now.
Mike Catalana
It's.
Jenna Cottrell
Once you get into camp that's different. It's a step up. But right now, we. Well, from what we've seen, it's really hard to glean anything about the.
Mike Catalana
I do want to add one thing. I did some math today. I saw this, and I. I didn't like the way it came out, so I took it off of Twitter. Was nothing wrong with it other than the reason I did the math was there's some players to watch out for, both because we'll be interested in where they go. Trey White's a Perfect example. Wherever Trey goes, you're going to be interested in that. He's already been gone before to Baltimore and the Rams. Then he came back to the Bills or they come back to the Bills. Right. Shaq Thompson would be a good example. Could he be coming back? And I added it up and it's just under 4,000 snaps of defense that are not currently on an NFL roster. That is from last year. So that's a lot. The guys who have signed dangerous aj, Dane Jackson, Savage, Darnell Savage.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
These are the players who have signed with other teams. I mean. Right. Bosa hasn't signed and Milano hasn't signed. So the reason I say that is you will see. Maybe a little bit could happen now. Some might happen really close to the start of training camp.
Dan Fates
Yeah. And I did see a couple comments that were like, well, these guys haven't signed yet because they didn't want to go to OTAs. Or again, it's not like these are grueling practices for the most part. It's three to four days to. To get acclimated to your new team, new system, get the playbook, all of those things. Once it gets a training camp, they always talk about, like, getting in football shape. And it's one thing if you're training on your own, it's another thing when you're training with a team and in the. In their facility and under their guidance on what they want you to do. So we got past, like we said, there was like that pause after free agency before the draft where it was like, teams want to see where the dust settles, where players go. Now it's almost like you're playing catch up. Like if you. And again, there will be players that are maybe on the back nine of their career that will sign and will be added during training camps. Brandon cooks a lot of these, like some of these guys that will be probably on rosters or what do they usually wait after week four?
Mike Catalana
Because after week two, because teams, if they sign them a vested veteran, you have to guarantee their money for the entire year.
Dan Fates
Some of that goes into it.
Mike Catalana
Team waiting.
Dan Fates
Yes. So some of that goes into it. But I also think, like, oh, I don't want to. You know, they're waiting because they don't want to go to these practices and minicamps. Aaron Rodgers showed up to him. For a guy that does tough practices
Mike Catalana
are the ones coming up.
Dan Fates
Are the ones coming up in training camp. And again, those people, it's like Favre always did it. And Strahan, it's like, yeah, hall of Famers don't need to necessarily be doing the mandatory minicamps, but most of the guys want to be getting there, assimilating into the. The team and where they're going to be playing for the year.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, no, it makes sense. I am curious to see how it all play out, just where those guys will sign and. And when.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, and that'll be fun.
Jenna Cottrell
Some of those players do, huh?
Mike Catalana
Be funner to see.
Jenna Cottrell
Funner stuff is wild, dude. Like, you're on tv. That's crazy. That's crazy.
Dan Fates
I've said worse.
Mike Catalana
All right.
Jenna Cottrell
I mean, you definitely have spelled worse. Yeah, you definitely have. I feel like that's a good segue.
Mike Catalana
That's it. Here we go.
Jenna Cottrell
The origin story of Buffalo Plus. So this question came into our life advice column. Although I know it's not life advice, but reminder, you can always send us in your questions@heybuffaloplusgmail.com, so I'll read you the prompt. Dear Buffalo Plus, I'll admit this isn't a life advice question. It's actually more of a suggestion, or maybe a request from a very loyal fan. Having watched the channel for nearly five years now, I feel like it's finally time for all three of you to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. From the beautiful Connors and Ferris podcast.
Dan Fates
Wow. Well done.
Jenna Cottrell
It's time for an Origin Story episode. A full tell all on how this thing got started. Really appreciate you, Josh, Martin and Trish. Which we know. Trish.
Dan Fates
Yep. We worked with Trish in the Southern tier of New York.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes. And we know Josh from his funny comments and.
Dan Fates
Great.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. So how many years has it been now? When did we start?
Dan Fates
There's no Buffalo plus without me.
Jenna Cottrell
There's no. Okay, there isn't.
Mike Catalana
There's no Buffalo plus without Mike or Janet.
Dan Fates
Yeah, that is true. But it wasn't like there was Buffalo plus and then I was brought in. It was a idea that all came together, so. And I'm not gonna let you weasel your way out of this because the other day you said a really nice thing. You said you've never been more right about anything than when you hired me.
Jenna Cottrell
That is true.
Mike Catalana
Did I say that?
Jenna Cottrell
You did.
Mike Catalana
Was I drinking?
Dan Fates
No.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, you're out. You were at work, so I hope not. Okay, so why don't we share how
Mike Catalana
we got started with this?
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Mike Catalana
So let's start with the fact that all three of us have our backgrounds in television reporting, anchoring, sports. That's what we do. That's What Jenna has done, what Dan has done and I've done for my whole career.
Dan Fates
Are you crying already?
Jenna Cottrell
No, I had something in my eye. But Dan and I worked together at the same station in the Southern tier in Elmira.
Mike Catalana
And so that is our background. So I'll just start by saying the idea for the concept, concept of doing more digital work. And you guys know this. There's television, regular television, linear media, where it's channel 13 in Rochester, Fox31, Fox know, channel 7 on cable. That's what we have done here. And you guys in Elmyra and in Rochester and a couple of places. And then there is more of digital things, which is all the social media and also the YouTube channel and what we do where it's not part of a newscast. So they came to us with this idea. We want to do more digital.
Jenna Cottrell
Our company that we work.
Mike Catalana
Our company that we. We work for, that owns Buffalo plus, owns.
Dan Fates
Yep.
Mike Catalana
The TV stations. Owns a lot of TV stations. And they came to us. And the idea in general, I thought was a good idea. Now, I've been doing this a long time, and I always wanted to do more stuff for us because everybody knows there's a frustration in television when you only have a certain amount of time. It's the old joke. Everybody hears, oh, you got three minutes of time, four minutes of time. No matter what extra we did, there's always, you want to do more. So they said, we want to do this digital part. And at the time, it really was just, you were here and I was here, and we were looking to hire another person.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes. Well, we had Toby.
Mike Catalana
Right. But it was. Who was also a transition of. Right to when Toby Motica work. Russ was great.
Jenna Cottrell
Awesome.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, yeah. He's now going on to a different career where he probably makes a lot more money than killing it.
Jenna Cottrell
No doubt.
Mike Catalana
But that was at the point.
Dan Fates
Toby, congrats on the Knicks.
Mike Catalana
Yes, I know.
Jenna Cottrell
Huge Knicks for a long time.
Mike Catalana
Yes. So they were talking about hiring somebody. And that is where. And I'll get to that story later. But that's when we hired Dan. And the initial ideas of the channel, or I shouldn't even say Jenna, the channel, it was more. The initial ideas of the concept of what we were going to do probably weren't great.
Jenna Cottrell
I just. They had. It had limitations.
Mike Catalana
Right. Good intentions. But the execution of it was more stuff that we didn't think was going to work for today's audience.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Dan Fates
It was more like 2019.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. So you're going to a website. So there is out There some initial subscribers to us.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And it wasn't my parents.
Jenna Cottrell
It wasn't mine either.
Mike Catalana
No, it wasn't anybody.
Dan Fates
It was, like, 16 people.
Mike Catalana
Yes. Bless you.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
To read my articles.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. So it was a very different thing. And then I can't even do the joke. Dan.
Dan Fates
What's the joke, Mike?
Mike Catalana
Going to YouTube.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Dan Fates
Okay, before we get to that, Jenna, I mean, I think we've told it before, but Jenna hired me in Elmira, so that's how we got to know one another.
Jenna Cottrell
So sorry, everyone.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Honestly, I was bartending at Applebee's and doing a high school Sports show, making $0 and $0 cents to try and make this a career.
Mike Catalana
Did you just say you made zero sense when you were doing it?
Dan Fates
Like it was. Went to school at Fredonia for communication in journalism. I don't know how I passed all those writing classes, but I don't know
Jenna Cottrell
how you did either.
Dan Fates
But I was a production assistant, so I did all this stuff behind the scenes at Channel 13, because in my Mayberry head, I thought, I'll be behind the camera, and if there's ever a day that there's not somebody that. That can anchor sports, they'll call on the kid behind the camera. No.
Mike Catalana
You know what they put on his suit? They would tell me, hey, you got to let this Dan kid do his job, not hang around the sports department. That's when they came to me, because you were hanging around with us, so.
Dan Fates
And then I got an opportunity through here. They said, hey, there's a job opening up in Elmira. I drove down to Elmira, interviewed with some sports director named Jenna Cottrell, as I called her so many times.
Mike Catalana
So many. What was that interview like?
Dan Fates
It was awesome.
Jenna Cottrell
It was actually. So I had not a great experience with a former co worker, so I was like, hey, I really want to make sure I'm gonna get along very well with whoever they hired.
Mike Catalana
Dan.
Jenna Cottrell
So the interview was, like, four hours long. We drove up to Ithaca and back because I was like, if I can stand being in the car with this person and around this person for four hours, who was driving? I was driving.
Mike Catalana
Is that the last time you drive legitimately?
Jenna Cottrell
Probably. And so we were just chatting, and, you know, he was dating Renee, and we were just talking about, you know, him being from Rochester. And then I have a standup special. Kevin James special. Sweat the small stuff. I used to grow up watching, like, standup comedy, and it was my favorite. It was just so funny to me. And Dan quoted a line from it, and I Was like, oh, my. We just were going back and forth quoting Kevin James.
Dan Fates
I don't get the job if I haven't watched Kevin James like a thousand percent when he jumping rope in the attic. I peeled an orange about an hour ago. I'll be on the shoe like, all time. It was like Comedy Central back in the day. It was just his standup. And we literally. I. I think the interview with Renata, who was the news director, was like an hour. And then it was like, hey, if you could. Like, you're with Jenna for the day.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And we drove and I didn't get home till like 2 in the morning because it was a two hour drive. Oh, okay.
Jenna Cottrell
I was like, wait, no, no.
Dan Fates
But stayed through the 11 o' clock show. Did all this stuff. And like I said, In Elmira Market 175, it is a small news team. You are working with the same people in close proximity all the time.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And so to get along with one another was a big thing. And we worked together for fifth eight months before you got the job in Rochester.
Mike Catalana
So let's get to that point. So we have a job opening and people had. She was like this big deal. They were like, oh, you got to see this woman is working in Elmira.
Jenna Cottrell
That's crazy. So not true.
Mike Catalana
And so I had seen some tapes of her to whatever. And we had the job opening, and Dan was interested in the job.
Jenna Cottrell
So I had been in my job for like, almost two years.
Dan Fates
Not proud of where this story is going.
Jenna Cottrell
Director. And Dan was sports reporter, which makes sense. Like, I got there before, and Dan is from Rochester. I'm not from Rochester. Mike reaches out about the job. I get the job.
Mike Catalana
You come up. Hold on. You come up for an interview. You had a long interview for that one.
Jenna Cottrell
That was a long.
Mike Catalana
We kept you there for the day.
Jenna Cottrell
It was probably. Yeah. I remember I had to race back down.
Mike Catalana
You never. Typical of you. You weren't like, I have a time commitment.
Jenna Cottrell
No. I just was like, all right, we'll
Mike Catalana
just do the whole thing.
Jenna Cottrell
Ye.
Mike Catalana
And then we're offering you the job. And that went over really well.
Jenna Cottrell
Dan was not happy with me. I was like, oh, my God, I'm gonna, like, lose my best friend.
Dan Fates
Because my defense, Jenna, big time star. And I was like, you can go anywhere you want. And in my home market, there's like.
Mike Catalana
Came to Rochester, came to channel 13.
Dan Fates
Like, that was. And I'll never forget, like, sitting there in that little sports office, just two desks next to one another and being like, where do you see yourself, like, what market do you want to go to next? She's like, I'm gonna go anywhere. You know, the bigger the market, the better all these things. And I'm all it was. And I was like, rochester's awesome. All I want to do is get back home. You know?
Mike Catalana
That was it. You put it in her head.
Dan Fates
I told her how great Rochester was.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
I go, you get bills, you get Syracuse athletics, you get minor league sports with the Red Wings and amex. Like, it's perfect. And then she gets the job.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And then we had to have a phone call.
Mike Catalana
So we had phone call.
Jenna Cottrell
You guys did? Yeah. Oh, yeah. I don't know if I know this.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, my gosh.
Mike Catalana
And it was not long after that that you got a job in Rochester?
Dan Fates
It was. Yep.
Jenna Cottrell
I was.
Dan Fates
It was. Wasn't.
Mike Catalana
And then we used to have some conversations then, too.
Dan Fates
I was at it, different station, but I still stayed in touch like that.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Really?
Mike Catalana
How about playing the long game?
Dan Fates
Played the long game.
Jenna Cottrell
Literally at Dan's wedding. We were chatting. He's like, playing the long game. Invited Catalana.
Dan Fates
Now. Now, in my defense, you had always been a mentor.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like when I was a production assistant bothering you, hanging out in the sports office. It was all I wanted to do. You called my highlights when I was growing up, playing hockey and all of those things. And so not to me, highlights.
Mike Catalana
There's a couple.
Dan Fates
And I go, I just remember, like, talking fetus. I remember talking to you through it and then being like, I had been working in Myra, like, in the business, like six months.
Mike Catalana
We had a long talk at the Winfield with Dawes. Yeah. We had a long talk there.
Dan Fates
And I was like, I. I want the job. I was up and he. You straight up said, you're not ready.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
I was like, I respect that.
Mike Catalana
But then we had another talk later.
Dan Fates
Yeah. And then my father and my father in law cornered you at my wedding.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. Because, hey, by the way, if there's
Dan Fates
ever any opening at this point, I was back in Rochester working at another station, and I was talking to Jen about who was gonna be invited to the wedding. And I go, I think I'm gonna invite Mike. I go, that way, if something ever opens up, like, I'm still in the good graces, like, that's where I want to be. And I said to Jenna, I'm playing the long game. And sure enough, my father and father in law, I look over at the wedding midway through, and Mike's cornered on either side by. By my dad. And father in law going, hey, you know, my son really likes. Really, you know, thinks highly of you. If there's ever anything that you can do for him. Well, I already had a job. Like, it wasn't like I was homeless
Jenna Cottrell
and your boss was there.
Mike Catalana
So let's. So let's now fast forward. So now we're starting Buffalo Plus.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
And they're like, I'm dealing with the corporate people now. They have given me a lot of leeway through the years about hiring because I've done this so long. But that was TV jobs. Corporate people had this idea, and can you imagine? They wanted somebody with hot takes who was going to be all over social media, who's going to stir things up. This is what they wanted. They were 100% right for what the job should be. And I'm thinking, well, I really want him to hire Dan because I know he can anchor, I know he can report. He will help us. Wherever this other thing goes, he will be the right one. I sold him so hard to the corporate people. Like, I got the guy. I think it's going to be him. They watched him and they were like, are you sure he can do this? I'm like, yeah. And I'm thinking, I have no idea how he's going to be on social media. You.
Jenna Cottrell
I remember you being like, I just got to sell it like this. And it's like, Dan is all of that more.
Mike Catalana
And then you got it. And you. You would be the poster child of the guy they'd want to hire. Truly for this. Stir it up a little bit. And then they hired you.
Dan Fates
Now the rest is history. The end.
Mike Catalana
No, but then. So then Dan is here. So now the team is together. We're sort of figuring it out. And then we like to joke.
Dan Fates
Yeah. We can put the joke aside for
Mike Catalana
this one time that we had the idea. But it's. Jenna came to me and said, hey, we need to be on YouTube. And I remember at the time being like, YouTube, like, yeah. I didn't sense at the time that people spent a lot of time just on YouTube.
Dan Fates
Again, this is 2019.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
So it wasn't even like YouTube TV was really a thing. No, it wasn't like apps on tv. Like, it wasn't a thing.
Mike Catalana
And you said that you. I don't even know.
Dan Fates
Because corporate was thinking more of the athletic in the sense of like a paywall and getting articles, exclusive content that you could. You would have to. And we were all kind of thinking, like, there's a lot of free stuff.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like, yeah, but we wanted specifically on
Jenna Cottrell
the beat for the Bills.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Jenna Cottrell
Makes a challenge.
Dan Fates
And we saw it as an opportunity to know, like, hey, Outside of the 6, 10 and 11 o' clock sportscast, like, there's other stuff that's going on.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Whereas you voice said like, you would hold things until like the 11 o' clock show if they were really good because you didn't want the competitors to get it.
Mike Catalana
But here's what the difference was. When you do the newscast, we are talking about everything.
Dan Fates
Yes.
Mike Catalana
The plus from what the corporate people wanted us to do and what this became. This was about the Buffalo Bills and nothing but the Bills.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
And so that is a departure from normal broadcasting and people seek out content on the Bills. And so we needed to be in that game and in the beginning for a little while because we were still like part of our website and on Facebook, we were trying to get the digital part of it out there. Jenna's idea of saying, go to YouTube, I think one of the questions that he may have asked was about when you thought things were at least starting to work.
Jenna Cottrell
How did you sell the idea? How does it change what you do day to day? Was there ever a point you didn't think doing the pod was worth it? So we can get into those questions. But I guess for me, I always. So I spent a lot of time watching YouTube.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Jenna Cottrell
I love food videos, I love makeup tutorials, clothing, all that stuff. Sports stuff, obviously. And so for me, I'm also the type of person that you put so much effort and work into doing a three minute sportscast. You're cutting the video, you're editing your scripts, you're writing everything. And working at a small market, we don't have producers. We're doing all of that work on our own. And so I just felt like we put so much into what we do, and it's just such a short segment that YouTube just gives the availability to have some breathing room in a way that I think is unique. And also I was like, people want to know what we see, what we hear. Like, we are at Bill's practices, we are at games, we are on the sidelines. And I just felt like they gave us this idea and I totally get the merit behind it, but I was like, I think there's a way to make it better.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
And so while I had the idea, in all honesty, Mike and Dan buying in, like, if I had to do this by myself, I would have never done it because I just, I didn't have the. What's the word like gumption. Yeah, the gumption. Truly the chutzpah.
Mike Catalana
Well, okay, so. So what in when you are anchoring or even reporting, most of the time it's more individual. But you're talking about a lot of things to your point is we always felt like. And I always felt like there's so much more that I feel like I know or have been exposed to with the team. There's just no place to talk about it on television. Truly, there just isn't. It's a little bit. Maybe we did extra shows, you had a little bit more time.
Dan Fates
Well, I think that's also a little bit of the transition in media.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Dan Fates
Where it went from press releases or just highlights. This happened A and B, fact reporting. Right. And then whether it was first take, the way that podcasts were kind of coming along, people wanted more opinions. And the dynamic that we kind of had was the hall of Famer that had been covering the team for 30 plus years. We had been covering it for a few. I think I'd been. I got there in 2016 because it was Rex's last year was both of our first years. So, like we had some background in the. The inside, you know, inside baseball of the team. And that's where it was like, people, I think, want to hear our. Want more opinions.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
More than just the 30 second bills, VO or, you know, sound bite that we got from practice.
Jenna Cottrell
And I think one of the things that makes what we do, like you have the experience that you have, you grew up here and being a woman, like, I think I sometimes have a different point of view. So I think we touch on. Yeah, everything. Like we're, you know, sports fans are different types of people and we all are different types of people. And I think that's why it's kind of grown into the way that it has because also the personalities and the way we get along. But I always felt like there was a place for this. It was just finding which avenue would be best.
Mike Catalana
And I've always felt like it. The frustrating part of the other part of our job is you are talking to a broad audience of people who have all kinds of knowledge, little, big, none, whatever it is. And a lot of times when you're in the TV business, you get dismissed as the sports person, you know, until they need you and then they dismiss you again. What's been great about the channel, it's been great about doing this is we know who we're talking to and they
Jenna Cottrell
know what we're talking about.
Mike Catalana
Right. So you come to us, the targeted audience, Bill's thing. And there's all different types of the con, the content about the bills. But I feel like what has made this work in the beginning, certainly, and progress is the fact that it's a combination of knowledge and entertainment and time that only can work in this type of format.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, yeah.
Mike Catalana
And that's what I think we got started. And when I think. I don't think I've ever been more excited about something. When we hit a thousand subscribers, that was a.
Jenna Cottrell
That was a big deal.
Mike Catalana
Big deal. Because it started to pick up and it started to pick up and that was the point where you could tell people were kind of waiting for our content. And by the way, I think we can talk about this. We didn't really know what our content was going to be.
Jenna Cottrell
I look back at some of the old videos and I'm like, oh my God, yes.
Dan Fates
So part of that is also the good idea that corporate had was you're different. You are, you are Buffalo Plus. You are a brand that you are going to build and you are not going to be channel 13, which has always been so funny because even now, to this day, people when we've done shows in the TV studio, they're like, you guys got a new studio? It's like, no, that's our real job. Like, they built us this Connors and Ferris podcast studio because when we've gone places and we're in Miami or we're in Kansas City or we're elsewhere around the country at Bill's games, they don't know 13 Wham. They know Buffalo Plus.
Mike Catalana
And keep in mind that that brand for TV in the local market has been very, very strong brand. It's been the number one station. But that doesn't play in Buffalo. Yeah, or Buffalo or anywhere else where people watch us. So I would say the combination of having the right group, the amount of time, the buy in corporately, all led to the incremental growth of this entity that is Buffalo Plus.
Dan Fates
Also, it coincided when this kind of took off, went along with Josh.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And the growth of Josh Allen. Like some of our first videos were just uploading zoom links or press conferences of the Bills because it was just like, we can get it up faster. That's what we can do. And Covid hit. And so the first videos are probably still on the channel. Like we're in our houses, in our basements, like in our, in our living rooms.
Mike Catalana
It's weird that it was. What has been a big benefit of ours was is the access that we have to the players and the team. But it really started to grow before. Well, yeah. While we were doing it from home. Right. Because we couldn't cover games.
Dan Fates
We didn't really have much access.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
2020. We didn't. We didn't go to any games, you know, or we weren't allowed to shoot any games. We went to home games. You went to the AFC championship game and had to drive most of the time.
Mike Catalana
Like I just went.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Like. And I'm sitting in the press box doing a zoom call, which is. Yeah, yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Wild to think about. You said when it. One of the questions from Josh is when did you know it was working? So for you it was when we hit a thousand subscribers.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. Because it felt like in my mind that, that that was a. A big number. And it felt like it grew rather quickly.
Dan Fates
Mine. I know the exact moment, the exact game. 2020 in Kansas City.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
We were at the game. We had done a pre game show. We were packing up everything and a father and son came up to us and they were like, buffalo plus. And it was like, what? And it was just about to downpour. It was the game that got postponed. There was two of those games.
Mike Catalana
It was delayed. Yeah, yeah.
Dan Fates
Delayed. And I just remember the first time. And like we looked at each other
Mike Catalana
like, well, and they were from another Nebraska or somewhere. They were like, they were. They come to Kansas time.
Dan Fates
That it like hit us like, oh, this is. We're starting to get a little reach here. Like people are starting. And that's where I don't think any of us, at least myself. And like, not to get all sentimental, I didn't expect the community that has become Buffalo plus.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Jenna Cottrell
Thousand percent.
Dan Fates
Whether. I know we can joke around about the comments, but like the fact that people come out and see us, the fact that people ask how we're doing, say they love hearing stories about my kids or, you know, how's planning the wedding? Like, all of that stuff has blown me away. But it was the first time in 2021 in Kansas City when we got to travel again and it was like, it was the regular season game. Emanuel Sanders had a big touchdown. It was Vaughn saying, we're gonna make the plane do backflips on the way home. It was just one of those moments where I was like, we got something. Like, that's when it felt like to me, the snowball started rolling down the hill.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. I'm gonna be honest, I don't. I don't remember it being a specific moment where I was like, this is working. I just remember being like, this is fun.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Like, I enjoy this so much. You guys probably know my me by now when I have to anchor. I have to wear a really nice dress and have my makeup done. And you know, it's, it's such a.
Mike Catalana
Dan does the same thing.
Jenna Cottrell
This is a little bit more accurate presentation. Yeah, like, but like I like the more relaxed. And so it was just, it was fun. And I think that people could see how much fun we were having. And then also you mentioned the community, like, you know, getting married last year and all the kind comments and just people knowing our personalities and knowing who we are and just what we've been able to build through that has been so special in a way that genuinely I never ever expected.
Mike Catalana
I want to go back to the content stuff because I think that was also a transitional part. That really surprised me when we posted Josh Allen's interview. Now the team would eventually do it, but we would be like, we got to get that up there quickly. We got to get his post game, you know, comments up there, sort of beating everybody to the punch. And that stuff did well.
Jenna Cottrell
And that was just the actual interview. That wasn't our analysis of it. It was just, here's what happened.
Mike Catalana
It was when we started to post more of our post game thoughts and all that and those did better that I was like, oh, okay, yeah, because look, not dumb. If it was going to work, that it was, we're getting what, just what Josh Allen's saying. That's what we would have done. And it did work in the beginning. But then I really started to notice the more we did and the more opinion and the more perspective we gave on the games, the better those videos would do. The, the more response we got from that. And I think that was a real eye opening thing.
Jenna Cottrell
I think in the beginning it was definitely like, let's throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
And then from there it was like, okay, maybe this isn't the best use of our resources. Maybe we should spend our time doing this. And that's not to say that all the cogs have been worked out. There's definitely things that we need to continue to do or to continue to explore. But I do think that that was something that you're right. Like it took a lot of time for us. And, and I think about those old videos of like all three of us on Zoom or whatever and like the audio quality was bad. Like the station is also adapted. Brian Swear has been a huge piece as well. And just like the, the people who have been like, all right, we need to invest in also, like the way this sounds, the way this looks and the, the progression of that as well. Because that truly does matter.
Mike Catalana
And. And while we're mentioning that, I also have to say Chuck Samuels.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Matt Malin. Yeah, certainly. Ed Pitaccio.
Jenna Cottrell
Now let's say Pete too.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. Well, that, that's from the corpus. I mean, in our building, who started to recognize, you know, Chuck was a big proponent of what we were doing. Started to recognize we were doing and takes away from the other product here for the newscast that we have been. We're still a large part of it, but not as much. So their buy in to help us at all different levels there was important too because we started to say we can do more and more and that's when the amount of content increased. You know, then it became like we're doing six videos a week.
Jenna Cottrell
Right.
Mike Catalana
During the season. It takes time and effort.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
And. And to get their buy in to that too was important.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. How does it change what you do
Mike Catalana
day to day that leads into that pretty well. Because it's funny Dan mentioned at one point our real jobs. I think the podcast has become more of our. When I say real job, it has been a priority. It's the priority of the company. It's the priority. It's our priority. Not that we don't do the other, but typical in TV or radio or anything, you do your main thing and then you do something else. Sometimes I think this has been become the number one thing that we do for people inside and outside the building.
Dan Fates
100 and like, again, that's because of you. Like, that's because of the audience. That's because of the Buffalo plus community. Like, you know, you have an idea, like Jenna said, like you have this thought, but if it doesn't take.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Then you don't get the buy in from the people that really make the calls. It'd be like, yeah, a line cook wanting to be like, hey, I really want to make this dish. Well, if nobody buys the dish, then the executive chef or whoever at the restaurant is going to be like, we're not serving this dish. So like, I know there have been jokes, you know, about the like comment and subscribe and all this stuff that really helps us.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like that shows not only us, it shows our bosses that this is a real thing, that that's worth the time, the investment. It's become like today we're recording this on Monday. Like we're going to get done, I'm going to make the canva the thumbnail. We're going to export this. Like, we're going to make reels. Like, this is our, this is my job today. This is our job. Like, not like. That's because of the growth that the channel has seen that we thank so many of you when we say like, appreciate you like commenting and subscribing.
Mike Catalana
And Jen, I think part of it is when he says what's a day to day. It's allowed us to still do a lot of other stuff, but to do it in a way that we can still prioritize. The podcast.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Where our time. You guys have been very adaptable to time TV used to be. You're coming in at three in the afternoon and you're working until midnight. And we work some crazy hours. Other days are different. We adjust to the bill schedule, our schedule, every other thing. But it's changed the day to day. It's changed some of what we cover. But that's changing in the television business too. The difference is for a lot of people in television business and unfortunately has cost people jobs because they don't do as much. We're doing in total more content now than has ever been done out of the building. So I think that's an important thing to recognize is that it's changed. It's like that's, that's a really good analogy about the cooking part. It really is. Because it's like people, viewers respond, which then in turn means sponsors respond and
Dan Fates
then corporate claw, Bud Light, like all of them. That was also one of the moments when you realized like, holy. Like this is, this is when people were saying like, you guys should do events. And it was a lot of times it started in comments.
Jenna Cottrell
I mean, we always joke too. We're like, no one's gonna show up.
Mike Catalana
So tell the story about. So we did one at the Thirsty Turtle Shout Out.
Dan Fates
Thirsty.
Jenna Cottrell
Was that our first one?
Mike Catalana
It was the first one of the. It was the first one we did.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Because then the next year it was when they did the light tour.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
So we're here. I'm doing some stuff for the newscast. I think you guys were both heading out there and you called me up when you were getting there.
Jenna Cottrell
So I pulled into the parking lot
Mike Catalana
at like 4 in the afternoon.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, 4 in the afternoon.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. And we're doing. Oh, yeah, right.
Jenna Cottrell
So I pull into the parking lot again. Still shocked anyone shows up to those. But we love you. But I called Mike because I'm like, there must be another event here. There's a lot of cars.
Mike Catalana
And then you walked in and you were like.
Jenna Cottrell
And I was like, oh, my gosh.
Dan Fates
We've done the ones at riverworks. And there's people that they want to talk, they ask about the bills. What do you think? And then it's also, how are your daughters?
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like, how are the kids? How's the wedding planning going?
Mike Catalana
Well, it's the idea of that. Those once we started doing those and that went well and we'll be doing a bunch.
Jenna Cottrell
I forgot about that, though, being like.
Mike Catalana
And I remember thinking like, okay, we'll get there and we'll see what there and then. And we got a great crowd and people were very enthusiastic.
Jenna Cottrell
The live shows, if you haven't been on, they are so much fun. We have a great time with it.
Dan Fates
It's awesome.
Mike Catalana
But. But that is also a sign of growth because now you are, in addition to your viewers responding, now you have sponsors responding. And so that allows us.
Dan Fates
Picasso's Pizza Love
Jenna Cottrell
is really good.
Mike Catalana
It is really good.
Dan Fates
Like I said, I put some of the clips in at the beginning. I'll put some more at the end of like over the years of so many bloopers. Just not even bloopers, it's just moments. Like, they're not like, I think about the Ravens post game podcast that we did after the the Comeback and just we're recording that again. Talk about crazy hours. Like, the game goes late, all of that stuff. And it's like, all right, like, rev back up. Like, we're now we have to put out content for this game and we're just out of our mind loopy from the delirium of that game. And just. And then people just thought like the response when you get those moments and that we're able to help enhance it or tell it in a different way from us being on the field or what it was like in the press box. I think people have really gravitated towards that.
Jenna Cottrell
It's a good. This is an interesting question from Josh. Was there ever a point where you thought doing the pod wasn't worth it? I can honestly say I don't think we ever felt like that. At least I don't want to speak for you guys, but I don't think I ever felt like that because I felt like we. What we had has been so special. And it's also just, there's always something to.
Mike Catalana
To talk about, you know, I don't think I ever felt like was it worth doing. I will say you mentioned Pete Briefly. So we call him Podcast Pete. He's our guy corporately.
Dan Fates
Shut up, Pete.
Mike Catalana
And he has been a big proponent of what we're doing. And I think there was times like when. So I told Dan and Jenna, all these years of doing tv, you know, they. They pat you on the head a little bit when you do sports and you don't normally sit in meetings with all the salespeople, the general manager, the news director, the corporate people. Well, that's what we've been doing with the corporate people. And they had some tremendous ideas for us. One of them was about consistency of the content. And we try to do that for you guys too. You know, when our post game is coming out, you know, when we're doing.
Jenna Cottrell
Or we try to update you.
Mike Catalana
Yes. And we. And we try to do that. And that was the point where they were like, they were so positive to us in what we were doing that
Jenna Cottrell
the heck.
Dan Fates
Jenna, all the mics are working. She said, put me on camera again.
Mike Catalana
You just wanted to check your hair.
Jenna Cottrell
Sorry, my hair had a 90 degree angle.
Mike Catalana
Dan, Dan, put me up there for a second.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, my gosh, you guys are haters. Just had to check.
Dan Fates
It's getting deep about Podcast Pete here.
Mike Catalana
No, I am sorry. That really helped us. Yeah, it also, you know, because they were seeing things that could help us that in turn would help our viewers. Yeah, it really was. So that was. That was a period of growth too, because then we really started to notice because people could count on us when we were putting stuff up.
Jenna Cottrell
But I think I'm going to commend your discipline because it's easy to be in a meeting and be like, yeah, we should be posting every time. But I feel like you have really bought into being like, hey, something big happened for the bills. We got to record a video.
Dan Fates
I think some people I was talking to friend of the channel, Stephen Bond, and he was like, who does the directing? And then, like, I know people probably see it off the side. Like we now, like, this takes all the cameras, like all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes, like it's just pressing a button. Helps enhance the viewership.
Mike Catalana
Now they know why they see you all the time.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. Because Dan's in charge of the camera.
Dan Fates
Yeah. And I. How many. How much do I edit you?
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Yes.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, I know, I get it. But actually, this is a good question though, because Josh was asking, do you have a producer or support staff? So like we talked about, Brian Swerda has been awesome. Sometimes Rusty will be. What's wadi?
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. We'll sometimes come in to direct the live shows. Yes. But we don't have, like, a set producer. Like, we don't. We are the ones that are responsible for producing the content.
Mike Catalana
Now, I will say I add in the other people in our building, like Beth and Melody.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Who help us with coordinating all the other stuff. That is our responsibility. That frees us up for more that we do here. So what are you gonna say, Dan?
Dan Fates
I'm still just trying to hold it together.
Jenna Cottrell
You are a child. One of the last questions. Who gets the YouTube revenue? So we'll say when the podcast does well, we do well. Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. I don't think it's our place to be talking about some of the financial stuff. It's. Everyone works differently. We are all employees of a corporation and they are very supportive of what we're doing.
Dan Fates
The super chats, the super tips, all that stuff is greatly appreciated.
Mike Catalana
Yes.
Dan Fates
And everything like that.
Mike Catalana
And that was one.
Dan Fates
Another one of those first times that when we got one and it was like, whoa, super tip.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. I was like, oh, my gosh.
Mike Catalana
But to the big picture there, when the channel is Dennis. When the channel does well, in many ways, we do better. So that's. That's what we. That's what we want.
Jenna Cottrell
This was fun. Is there anything you guys want to touch on?
Mike Catalana
I think we're going to continue to try to grow. That's the biggest thing and I think evolving a little bit. And Dan mentioned shows, like, we're really hopeful to be doing at least one, if not two, live appearances on the road this year. One of them might be in a place where what happens there stays there.
Dan Fates
That's well said.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
There are casinos.
Mike Catalana
Yes.
Dan Fates
Lots of them.
Mike Catalana
And so if you're anywhere or I know a lot of Bill's fans who are planning on making that trip.
Dan Fates
Yes.
Mike Catalana
That would be something we're working on. That would be a blast. It has been awesome to do them in western New York and have people show up and do the podcast live. I think there's a very good chance we're going to be doing that on the road this year at least once, if not twice. So when I say on the road, I mean the real road. Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
And if there's any. Anyone like, watching who. If you want to comment in some of the video suggestions of, like, hey, I want to see a video on XYZ about the bills. Or, hey, maybe for pregame coverage. What if you focused on this or a certain match, like, all ideas are good. So it's nice to have, you know, your comments as someone who watches the
Dan Fates
channel as well, especially during this time. Because during the season, like Mike was saying, we are pretty regimented about what we're doing. Monday, we're usually recapping a game. Tuesday's usually. We've done it before of kind of. We've done Ask questions. We may have a new segment possibly coming in with new people and something like that. And then we're up at practice. Wednesday we have our live shows. Thursday, we're, you know, putting out content. Best bets. You got best bets on Fridays. Then we're usually on the road. Yep.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And then we have the post game podcast. So, like we're trying to put out content at least six days a week during the season. This is now a time, like I said, whether we're going to do. There was another idea that we had. Oh, we have to the travel draft. That was another thing too, that when we started to do that, we used to do it just not on camera or anything like that. And we're like, maybe they'll. People will enjoy this and think about it and that, you know, people love that one.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Dan Fates
People say they love the travel draft. Like that was another thing where it hit and you weren't really expecting it to people.
Jenna Cottrell
Five views.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
My mom, my dad.
Dan Fates
Yeah. So, yeah, it's. It's really cool what we've been able to build as a community. And none of it's possible we can sit here and talk in front of cameras, but if nobody's on the other side watching the content.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And there's a lot of great Bill's content. And I think that we have found a nice niche between what we. The friendship, the family. We're a family, Herb. That kind of stuff that has brought
Mike Catalana
viewers back and we all. We stick to our lanes. I would say it's our. Our. Our main goal is to inform you as entertainingly possible as we can.
Jenna Cottrell
We want you to learn something, but
Mike Catalana
we want to have fun doing it.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
A.B. and it is a big advantage, I think, to a viewer and it helps us that we are at everything that
Jenna Cottrell
I think is sometimes not always thought about, but I think the impact it can have. The fact that we're seeing the players at practice, being there on the sidelines during the game, just being able to have eyes on combine situations, even being able to like read body language in certain moments that you don't see on camera. Like, I think a lot of that. And that's why I wanted to start the channel because I was like, we are seeing and hearing stuff that I think a lot of Bills fans would be interested in learning about.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
I was gonna say something else. Oh, also, you talk about, like, sticking to the main goals.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like, I also don't think we try and step outside of our lane of, like, not going to try and talk about something if I am not educated enough to break down all 22 or things of that. That's not necessarily what we do. But we've been fortunate enough as the channel has grown, it's a lot easier to reach out to people at ESPN NFL Network and say, hey, we'd love to have Dan ORLOFSKY Come on. LaShawn McCoy Come on. And that's because we can sit here and kind of puff our chest out a little bit and say, hey, got almost 50,000, you know, subscribers. You know, we've done this x amount of 5 million views last year. Like, we want to try. And that way you're able to bring on Brian Baldinger. Like, I think about that time during COVID when we were really trying to take, like, get this off the ground. I was just reaching out to anybody that was. Anybody in the NFL space that had their DMs open. And I'd say, love to have you on to talk about what the Bills could be, what their roster is like. And that's how we. That's how we built the relationship with Giardi.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like, it was just. Way that it's taken off has given us so much more credibility to bring in other people to continue to educate the audience or as you've done the. What they're saying in the other cities.
Mike Catalana
Right.
Jenna Cottrell
I love that.
Dan Fates
To get their perspective on, you know, the Bengals, what's going on in New England, what's going on in, you know, Vegas this year. Like, getting to know that, I think helps educate the audience and the viewers as to what to expect going into a game.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. And I, I just. That's. I. That's why I go back to. We are reporters at heart. We have opinions. I always say it's perspective. We always run into the whole idea of people wanting us to be fans. And we've talked about this on other podcast where it's awesome for us when the team does well. But I really do believe most fans want you to be honest when you're talking about it. And I. We try not to bullshit you on what we're talking about really is the truth. And I love it when it goes well. And I think it's great. But at the same time we're in that same locker room when it doesn't go well. And we want to tell you that or why there is an issue. And I think there's a level of trust that we've built up through all that. And so you know it, too, if you're listening to somebody who's telling you everything's sunshine and roses and, you know, it's not. I think most fans kind of get that a little bit.
Jenna Cottrell
I like your use of the word honest.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Because I think there are times where you can take. Not say, take advantage of people's interests. But I think it's important to also be honest about your assessment of the team and what things look like and what can be improved upon or also what is working well. So I think. I like that word choice.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. And I think we. We take that approach. So when it's good, you know, we're all in. Right. Because there's a reason to be.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
And it's hopeful. And I look back at the end of last year, and I was extremely hopeful for this team after that Jacksonville game because that was a tough game. They went on the road, and then the emotion of the final game and then everything that happened from that. That's all real from us. But there is still the idea of real and honest. So those two games, I just wanted to give people the example of going in the locker room. Were there both those games. Our job is exactly the same. One is Jacksonville. Sean's gone off the field like this. Josh is celebrating. They just want a big game on the road. And then you get the end of the season with the craziness in overtime. It does not change the way we do our jobs. Which is why I think. I think you can. We appreciate. But I think you can trust us to be honest one way or the other. Whatever happens in. In a game. So that part's going to continue. That's just the way we. We do it. And at some point, I'm dragging you two to a Super bowl with this team.
Jenna Cottrell
I want to go so bad.
Mike Catalana
Could be this year. We'll see.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah, we'll see. Like, just like what that would mean to Bill's fans.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Look at what it's like for the Knicks.
Mike Catalana
Exactly.
Jenna Cottrell
I mean, I. And, like, I just think that that would be. And I think we get such an unbelievable.
Dan Fates
Yeah. And. And again, where we trying stay honest and real and also objective. Like, we tried to take, for the most part, our feelings out of it and use what our brains and our eyes are are telling us. But it's. You know, I don't think it's out of line to say. To sit here and say, like, Josh deserves a Super Bowl. Bill's fans deserve a Super Bowl. It doesn't mean that you're going to get it, but I can sit here with a straight face and tell you they deserve it.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
And so Lux involved with some of this stuff.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. No, but that would be a really cool experience, and we would love to be there.
Mike Catalana
Y.
Jenna Cottrell
To follow the Bills and to show you everything.
Dan Fates
Buffalo plus on Radio Row.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, my gosh. That's.
Mike Catalana
Let's go.
Dan Fates
It's also cool when we had, like, bean on the patio the first time.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah.
Dan Fates
Like, when we. When we've gotten guests to come on. Yeah, I think it's been cool.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. All right. Anything else, gentlemen?
Dan Fates
Good question, Josh.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, that was really good, Trish.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. Just.
Dan Fates
And, yes, there are awkward moments, and there's. When Mike asked me to go do, like, a soccer story or something like that when I just want to not do anything. You just want to work on reels and funny Twitter videos.
Jenna Cottrell
And Mike's like, honestly, Dan, your brain is just built for content.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
Like, I feel like we're similar in some ways, and Dan is.
Mike Catalana
I can just see. I can. I can see him over there working.
Jenna Cottrell
And he's like, I watch you work. It's not gonna come together.
Mike Catalana
Then he comes over and he's like, I gotta show you guys something. Doesn't he say it exactly like, oh,
Dan Fates
yeah, take a look at this content brain. Yeah, it's a problem.
Jenna Cottrell
All right, let's roll.
Dan Fates
My wife would say it's a problem.
Jenna Cottrell
Roll some moments.
Mike Catalana
Moments.
Jenna Cottrell
Buffalo.
Mike Catalana
Looking for moments. He found them.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. Should we wrap up and then we'll go to Moments? I guess.
Mike Catalana
Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
All right. Thank you all so much for joining us and for watching today. And like Dan said, and Mike, we.
Mike Catalana
This is like the movies where they do it in the credits.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. We truly do appreciate it, though. Like, it means more than you could ever.
Dan Fates
None of this is possible without the almost 50, 000 people that subscribe. Now you're gonna cry.
Jenna Cottrell
Shut up.
Mike Catalana
Now. She's.
Dan Fates
I'm gonna get her. I'm gonna get.
Mike Catalana
And she's slouching.
Jenna Cottrell
It only.
Dan Fates
I only took 58 minutes. But we're gonna get a tear.
Jenna Cottrell
It just means a lot. It just means a lot. You're so annoying.
Dan Fates
There's the thumbnail. Jetta crying.
Jenna Cottrell
That's. That's. It's a Monday. Of course it's A day that ends
Dan Fates
in a Y. Jetta's emotional.
Jenna Cottrell
Seriously. All right. For Mike and Dan, I'm Jenna. Thank you again. Please be sure to, like, comment, comment, subscribe and share. We will catch you on the next episode of the Buffalo plus podcast.
Mike Catalana
Roll them, Dan, holding down the fort
Jenna Cottrell
out in Indiana in your matching outfits.
Dan Fates
We do look adorable.
Mike Catalana
You really?
Jenna Cottrell
You gotta remind me of stepbrothers when they're.
Dan Fates
You guys seem like cool guys. You wear tuxedos to the interview. That's funny.
Mike Catalana
It's ironic.
Dan Fates
I get that you're kind of underplaying the whole formality of it. I think that's funny as hell.
Jenna Cottrell
Love you guys. Just kidding.
Dan Fates
Now the tuxes seem kind of weird.
Mike Catalana
What's mayor? I don't know. Did I say something?
Dan Fates
I don't know.
Mike Catalana
Oh, jeez. I think you'll feel better about this win, honestly, In a way, I think you'll feel better about this win than any win all season. Because the jets was a blowout. The. The Ravens so far, incredible comeback, but let's be honest, you gave up 40 and looked like ass for three quarters. Right? I mean, you did. Is that not true?
Jenna Cottrell
It's like ass.
Mike Catalana
Well, they did.
Dan Fates
It was one of the most incredible wins.
Mike Catalana
Comebacks, yes. But the game itself, you get. We got done that game.
Dan Fates
They had a concert.
Mike Catalana
Yeah. Because they were stunned that they came back and won the game.
Dan Fates
Well, the Patriots.
Mike Catalana
Okay. So annoying. Not really, but I gotta give it.
Jenna Cottrell
No, I'm so over that phrase. Okay.
Dan Fates
Saw Mike's face light.
Mike Catalana
I'm like, oh, here comes Mrs. Ly.
Jenna Cottrell
They press the turnover button.
Mike Catalana
They do.
Dan Fates
I called it.
Mike Catalana
No, I tweeted it out.
Jenna Cottrell
Stop, stop.
Mike Catalana
When did you call it?
Dan Fates
I said two is going to throw an interception.
Mike Catalana
Oh, you mean when I tweeted out. This is the time for the Bill's patented interception.
Dan Fates
I didn't know that I tweeted it.
Mike Catalana
I think he was reading my two. Dan turns to me during the game and he goes, is James Cook underpaid? James Cook.
Jenna Cottrell
Remember when you guys didn't want to pay him?
Dan Fates
Never did.
Jenna Cottrell
Do you remember that? No.
Dan Fates
Erroneous.
Jenna Cottrell
You remember that?
Mike Catalana
You sound like Dan when you say that.
Dan Fates
Erroneous. At all accounts.
Jenna Cottrell
I think the Saints, they play tough.
Mike Catalana
She's doing it already.
Jenna Cottrell
They do.
Dan Fates
Zero change top. This was our wackiest spot ever.
Jenna Cottrell
Yeah. You can tell it's 1am 1am stuff that has.
Mike Catalana
You can find the directions to it. I think they're gonna have the food trucks, Bud Light sponsoring it.
Jenna Cottrell
I think there's fat. Heads of us.
Mike Catalana
That's wild.
Jenna Cottrell
That's wild.
Dan Fates
Mine are just regular
Mike Catalana
pre fathead.
Dan Fates
You guys. Heads are enlarged, and mine's just normal.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, you don't need.
Jenna Cottrell
Damn, you already have a big head. That was drunk. So I've been impressed with what Khalil Shakir has done. But will that change when defenses change and get inevitably harder around him if there's another guy that's not there to decoy or distract or be another target? See, now you're gonna do that. And that pisses me off.
Dan Fates
We didn't even need to say anything.
Jenna Cottrell
That.
Dan Fates
It was just. It was.
Mike Catalana
We just wanted to make sure you had completed your point. Were we good?
Jenna Cottrell
I'm sorry. Your autofocus was going nuts.
Mike Catalana
You.
Dan Fates
And you made so many good points in all of that, and none of it is usable. Oh, we're leaving all of this in. But Jedi, you were cooking. You were cooking.
Jenna Cottrell
I know you talk with your hands, but.
Mike Catalana
So.
Dan Fates
I think.
Jenna Cottrell
He's so fed up with us. I'm slouching so hard.
Dan Fates
Okay, we're gonna keep rolling. You were almost. You were almost into the couch.
Jenna Cottrell
Okay, we're gonna keep roll. I mean, yo, talking.
Dan Fates
We're talking bills.
Jenna Cottrell
This is a comfy. We talked about this on our TV show. That essentially, like, it's. It's. What are you laughing?
Mike Catalana
Slouching against credit to the bills. They sold all the PSLs, too.
Jenna Cottrell
Yes.
Dan Fates
Yeah.
Mike Catalana
That's a tribute to Bill's fans. Yo,
Jenna Cottrell
here's such a troll. Screw you guys. You guys make fun of my posture. I'm just gonna. You are a child, by the way. I'm literally crying.
Mike Catalana
Oh, my God. Now you're crying. Is it because of the last game at the stadium?
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, my God. That's so funny. You guys say that Khalil Shakir is. I think it's more. Wait a minute.
Mike Catalana
Wait a minute.
Jenna Cottrell
Well, wait a minute.
Mike Catalana
Hold on, hold on. Well, we didn't say he was.
Dan Fates
Ma', am. Ma', am, please.
Jenna Cottrell
Okay.
Dan Fates
Pull your take to the side of
Jenna Cottrell
the road with the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Travel Draft. What?
Mike Catalana
Wait, what?
Dan Fates
I'm so confused.
Mike Catalana
I like that little plastic.
Dan Fates
Both things suck.
Mike Catalana
You know the ones that it's. It's like it's got just the little oaf.
Jenna Cottrell
Have you used bread before? I'm sorry.
Dan Fates
I bet around a loaf of bread.
Jenna Cottrell
Are you.
Mike Catalana
A man's waiting a mansplaining bread or Rasul Tuglist.
Dan Fates
Raoul's. Okay.
Mike Catalana
Yeah, yeah. Rasool's QB1.
Dan Fates
What he said CB1.
Mike Catalana
Oh, CB1. Yeah.
Jenna Cottrell
I didn't know if you did that on purpose.
Dan Fates
Like, is Mike having a stroke?
Mike Catalana
Oh, believe me, it'd be way worse than that.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, my God. Not putting that out there.
Dan Fates
The investment in TJ Sanders we'll get to and Dwayne Walker. Like, I think that they are Dwayne Carter.
Mike Catalana
No, Walker.
Dan Fates
Dion Walker. Sorry. Where do you think Dwayne Walker fits in like some of those Walker. So we are projecting what Dwayne Walker Dion.
Mike Catalana
Okay, this is. Wow. This is record setting.
Dan Fates
What Dwayne Walker Dion.
Jenna Cottrell
Oh, my God.
Dan Fates
Let it go.
Jenna Cottrell
He's not. Hey, Dan, relax. Hey, Dan.
Dan Fates
Like, what is mile more Dan, you're being hysterical.
Jenna Cottrell
Dan.
Dan Fates
Not allowed to have a point on this pot. Dan, help me when healthy in caveats. That. That part. Nope. Okay, I know where I was going with it.
Jenna Cottrell
Okay. All right.
Dan Fates
Let him cook.
Jenna Cottrell
Let him cook. Let him cook.
Dan Fates
