Can you imagine how valuable it would be to have the most incredibly intelligent business mentor on speed dial?
C
Imagine if you had a business mentor to tell you exactly what your next move should be.
Brock Johnson
How incredible would it be if there was someone who was unbiased who could help you make the next best move for your business? If you've ever questioned whether it was time to give up or to pivot and wish you had a crystal ball, today on Build you'd Tribe, we're going to show you how to use AI to make your next decision with certainty. Hey, welcome to the show. My name is Chalene Johnson.
C
My name is Brock Johnson and he's.
Brock Johnson
My co host and he happens to be my son. Build you'd Tribe. The episode that you may be listening to on your favorite podcasting app is a podcast that I started simultaneously with another podcast show that I do called the Chalene show and I started them both, I believe, in 2012. Brock, how old were you in 2012?
C
I was a 15 year old sophomore in high school.
Brock Johnson
Amazing. And we started doing this together. Were you in college or had you just graduated?
C
I hadn't graduated yet. I was still in college 2019, so it was maybe my junior year of college about six years ago.
Brock Johnson
That's wild. We've been doing this together. Now there's been times when Brock and I have been able to do this together because we were living in the same home. But for the most part it's something that we usually we split it up like he does an episode, then I do an episode and we've gone through many different iterations. Two years ago we decided to put the show on YouTube. So if you are listening to this and didn't realize we have a YouTube channel, we would love to invite you to subscribe to the YouTube channel. And today what we wanted to share with you is a decision that we've made about build your tribe using AI. And it's a decision that, you know, even with someone who's got more than 30 years of experience in business, it's one that I've struggled to make and to know if it's the right decision. And we wanted to share with you that process because it really does. It's very affirming when you're wondering if something is the right decision and you have some validation.
C
Absolutely. And it's something that we've been talking about, or at least I've been trying to talk to you about for really the last year or so. And we've been trying to figure out how to go about this decision and how to announce it and how to make these changes because this is a really big deal. And so I'm really happy that we're going to get to share all of our thoughts today and also share them in a way that is going to be really valuable for anyone listening. Whether you have 300 followers on Instagram and you haven't grown in a few years and you're just trying to figure out should you start over, should you go to TikTok, should you start a new Instagram account, should you try to revive this current one or any other stage in your business. This is going to be such a valuable episode for helping you with the decision making process.
Brock Johnson
I think it's really important to share my opinion that if you are in business of any kind, if you're even just a content creator who is using social media to create an income, build your brand, if you're not using AI, not just every day, but like all day long, you're going to get left behind so fast. And I'm saying that to intentionally create some fear because the gap between people who are getting really, really good at using AI and those who just are like kind of playing around with it and maybe a little still suspicious, etc, the gap is going to move so fast and become so vast at a pace at which like the human brain can't even understand. And so we're going to share with you that we're using today, but there's so many more.
C
Yeah, and what I was going to say is, even though I may not have been around at the dawn of the Internet, I mean, I was around, but I wasn't an Internet user. I was still in diapers being changed by you. What I will say is this. It's very clear that the people who were adopting the Internet early on, and not necessarily the Bill Gates of the world who were making computers, but just the people who were using the Internet in the early 2000s and exploring its capabilities. Those are the people who saw the biggest difference five, ten years down the line. And so where I think a lot of people get overwhelmed with AI is they might think it's a fad. They might think it's here today and gone tomorrow. When the reality is AI has actually been around for quite a while. And what we're seeing nowadays is consumer AI, where we, the average person, can finally use this stuff. And so it would be absolutely silly to ignore it. It would be silly to think it's just a fad, it's not going anywhere. And so, yeah, part of this is we kind of do want to scare you into taking action because you don't need to become an expert, but you need to at least become familiar with how to use AI.
Brock Johnson
I was in an Uber ride yesterday and I asked my Uber driver if he uses ChatGPT or AI and he said no, I may have heard of it, but like, I, I don't really see a reason why I would need to use it. Like, I, I don't know if I really even understand it. I don't know why I would need artificial intelligence. I said, if you need intelligence, then you benefit from using artificial intelligence because it's like borrowing additional IQ points. And so to have business IQ points is so valuable. I mean, the experience that a top paid mentor can bring to your business, the way that they can help you make money, save money, create systems, everything is remarkable. And we've done quite a few episodes about AI, so we will link to those below this show. But today we specifically wanted to share with you how we have used AI to make a really difficult decision. So just to back this up a little bit, when I launched the two podcast, at the time, I was transitioning out of being a fitness influencer and I had stepped out of fitness. And I was like, I just want to teach women how to use social media and marketing to build their business. And at the same time, I also was like, but I also want to launch a podcast where I am not talking about business, I'm just talking about, like, life stuff. So I'm going to launch two at the same time. And I literally launched both podcasts on the same day because at the time things were different. And I knew that, like, if I launched two at the same time, like, their artwork would show up at the same time and people would probably subscribe to both. And they did. And when I launched Build you'd Tribe, it was with the intent of driving awareness to the people who knew me from fitness to help them understand, like, I can help you in business, I can help you in marketing. That's like really my acuum. That's what I know better than anything. And a lot of people didn't know that side. They didn't know about my experience in business at that point. So it was a way to like, spread awareness. And we also had a business, the Marketing Impact Academy and other like, mini business courses, including an Instagram course at the time that I wanted to drive business to. So there was an intent behind building Build you'd Tribe. And then Brock, you really became like the go to person when it came to the social media. Like, I, I really kind of dug into the marketing side and you really dug into the psychology and how to use social. So it was just like the perfect fit to bring you on.
C
Yeah. And very much as we operate now in business, when we're running the Insta Club hub together, that was kind of the yin and yang approach. The style that we brought is that you, as you said earlier, have been doing marketing and have been in business for 30 years and have built this large presence and following. And when I first joined Build you'd Tribe, I didn't have a large following. And I very much represented someone who was just like most of our listeners who was just trying to figure it out online, trying to grow their audience, trying to build a business. And I just looked it up on ChatGPT. And according to ChatGPT, my first appearances on Build you'd try were actually in 2018. I made some guest appearances. You were kind of, you know, testing me out and letting me audition to be on the show. And then I officially joined the show, like you said, in 2019. But also according to ChatGPT, since its launch, you have released, or we have now released 830 episodes of Build you'd Tribe. So, yeah, there's been quite a bit of consistency in terms of this podcast.
Brock Johnson
I don't know what the number is too, but we've got millions and millions of downloads and there's people who've like, grown up and learned about their business and kind of like got their start from listening to this and that. Like, it kind of feeds my ego, you know, like when I meet people and they're like, oh my God, like, listening to Build you'd Tribe, that's how I discovered that I could build a course. Or that's how, you know, you helped me to quit my job. And when I hear things like that, those kinds of comments have made this decision that we're about to share. More difficult.
C
I would imagine that this decision was also made more difficult because, you know, like we said, you've been doing this since 2012. That's 13 years. I have friends whose children are not 13 years old. I know people who are not 13 years old. Like, there are people whose babies are not that age. And this is literally a baby, something that you have put maybe not blood, but definitely sweat and tears into. And it's been a lot of work, and you've helped so many people. And so this is not something that's very easy to, you know, a very easy decision to make.
Brock Johnson
Yeah. And so to cut to the chase, what we've been. I've been struggling with and Brock's been suggesting is like, hey, mom, like, it's your week to record an episode. I know you have a lot going on with this or that. Like, do you want me to just do it this week? And I'd be like, that's okay. I'll do it. And more often than not, Brock, you would just, like, do the episode. And I kept resisting stepping back and partly for all the reasons we've just said, also because I don't like giving up things. I love adding things to my plate. And sometimes I need a reminder because I've got that tendency to be a workaholic. I need to be reminded and encouraged and sometimes shown reasons why it's time for me to pivot or it's time for me to let go of something. You know, Another example of this was a business we had called the Push Journals. And that business has just. It's changed and it's evolved, and we've added things to my plate and added additional businesses since we launched Build you'd tribe. Since I created the push Journal business. And without removing those things, it's just like, how much more can you keep putting on your plate? So struggling with this decision, and I think, was it last week when you were here, Brock was here in Miami, and he was like, mom, do you want me just take over? Build your tribe? And that's when we finally. I finally said, yeah, I think so. I think so. I think it's time I said that to him. And I still kind of like. I'm like, oh, is this the right decision? And so I was like, oh, I know. I keep telling everybody else, anytime you say the words, I wonder what I should do, or I wonder how or I wish I knew. Just say that to ChatGPT. So I literally just had a very conversational discord with ChatGPT. I changed ChatGPT's voice to be a female voice. And so now I call her Chatty. But I basically just, I just, in my own voice, I said, okay, I don't know what to do. I started these two podcasts. One is a business podcast. You know, I do it with my son and it's business and marketing, which I love. I love helping people, I love that we do this together. It's something that we bond over. But I'm also trying to figure out if this is something I should continue to do. Then she just asked me a series.
C
Of questions and I think something that's so smart in what you just outlined and it's something that so many people miss. But I heard this early on after ChatGPT launched and it's totally revolutionized the way I use ChatGPT. And that is that oftentimes we think, oh, I should ask it a question and then it's going to tell me an answer. When the word you just used is conversation.
Brock Johnson
Yeah.
C
And when you're having a conversation with someone, it's back and forth, right? You're asking them questions, they're asking you questions, you're getting to know each other so that you can form a better relationship. Right. That's how human interaction works. Well, the same is true for ChatGPT because ChatGPT is trained on millions upon billions of conversations between humans, articles written by humans, books written by humans. And so when you ask it questions, you don't want to just have it give you answers, you also want to ask it to ask you questions so that there is a conversation because you'll be really surprised. ChatGPT is a great conversationalist. It's really great at asking you questions. And some of the more recent ChatGPT models, as it's continued to improve over the years, have gotten better at just asking questions. I feel like now when I'm having a conversation with ChatGPT, it rarely just gives me my answer, gives me my answer, plus a follow up question, because that's again, how conversations are built. That's how relationships are built. And that's how it's going to give you better directions and help you make better decisions because it's going to understand you so much better.
Brock Johnson
Quick bossy side note, I just want to say that if you are again, an entrepreneur, someone who's trying to build your own business or your own brand and you're using AI, get the paid version. Personally, I'm a big fan of Perplexity because it includes ChatGPT. But ChatGPT, I think the interface, they're all like, just get the paid version. There's so many incredible uses for it that you will make back your investment and then sometimes 10 in the first week. Brock, I sent you the questions that Chatty asked me, so why don't you play the role of Chatty and I'll play the role of me. So this is the conversation. We'll reenact the conversation I have with ChatGPT.
C
All right, so here are the seven questions that you call her Chatty. I call her Kathy because she's a Chatty Cathy that she came up with for you. Question number one, what are your primary goals for each podcast?
Brock Johnson
So when she asked me that question, it was, you know, really obvious. Like, I'm trying to grow my brands that help women with the Chalene show and when it came to Build you'd Tribe, hopefully it helps to build Insta Club Hub, but, you know, I'm really not pouring efforts into Marketing Impact Academy right now. A lot of the other business related endeavors, not so much. So it was like, okay, this is already making it quite obvious.
C
How much time and energy does each podcast require and do you have the capacity for both?
Brock Johnson
So that one, the time that it's required for Build you'd Tribe isn't that intensive. Definitely the Chalene show is far more intensive. But I was finding that, like, I'm not up to speed, like, what's the latest? It was taking me too much time to figure out, like, what does the audience need? I realized I'm not as in touch with the marketing and social media needs of our audience. So that was number one. And then number two, do I have the capacity? I'm like, at the moment? No, at the moment I had to be honest and say, like, I don't have the capacity.
C
What impact would stepping down from the business podcast have on your relationship with your son?
Brock Johnson
Now, that one, I was like, like, that's what I love about ChatGPT is it knows things about you and it updates its memory. Now, you don't have to tell it to update its memory with this latest model. And that one was like, oh, yeah, I hadn't, you know, I thought about that. But because we don't record it in person and because it's like something we do jointly together, but we're not usually spending time doing it together. We do it separately. I'm like, it's not going to have an impact on our relationship.
C
Yeah. I often tell people we're co Hosts, but we do separate episodes. So you do one, I do one. We're never actually on the same episode together. We're like two hosts of the same podcast who are never there on the same episode.
Brock Johnson
Side note, when we do record one together, because we have. I love that. And so I was going to ask you if you're okay with me, because you know we're going to. Spoiler alert. ChatGPT made it really obvious that it's time for me to step down, but I'm hoping that I can still be a regular featured guest. If that means you and I are spending time together.
C
Yeah, I'll consider it. I'll definitely consider it. Number four, are there any aspects of the business podcast that you find particularly rewarding or particularly stressful?
Brock Johnson
You know, I already said why it's stressful. It's rewarding is when I hear from people in our audience how it's helped them. But I feel equally excited and encouraged and proud when people say that about, like an episode you've done or a way that you've helped them. So I'm like, it doesn't have to be about me.
C
Interesting question number five. And you kind of touched on this one already, but how does each podcast align with your long term vision and your brand?
Brock Johnson
Yeah, and I'm, you know, shifting away from being known as someone who's a business and marketing expert. I'm just like, it's. What I feel most compelled to teach is about aging powerfully and hormones and health.
C
Question number six. Could simplifying your workload by focusing on only one podcast improve your overall wellbeing and the quality of your content?
Brock Johnson
Yes, I agree.
C
And then the last question that Chatty Cathy asked is, what feedback have you received from your audience about each podcast and how does that influence your decision?
Brock Johnson
Yeah, and that was a pretty major question because, like, I live off of the feedback for the Chalene Show. It's a very interactive audience. I'm very connected to that community. I'm a part of it. Like, I know them so well. I feel an emotional bond with them. And so just asking these seven questions, I mean, I continued to have this conversation with Chatty, but these seven questions just gave me total clarity. And so it is because I have this additional confirmation in addition to, like, Brock's feedback and Brett's feedback. But I think sometimes as business owners, we're also humans who are too close to situations and sometimes we're stubborn. We don't want to see the obvious. So to use artificial intelligence, which is more intelligent than most of us combined. It just made it like, okay, this is a no brainer and yeah, I need to make this decision. So that's what we decided.
C
And so basically what this means moving forward is you will still receive the same number of episodes. You'll still get just as many weekly episodes and shows on build you'd tribe. You won't hear from Chalene as often. You'll be hearing from me a little bit more often. I hope that means that not too many of you head for the exit and leave the show. I hope you can continue to get just as much value and education and tips and best practices and strategies and new features from me. And I'm really excited to get to put 100% of my efforts towards the show. As much as it was nice to have every other week off, I'm really excited to treat this as my baby and my only baby and I'm the only parent and get to really devote all my time, love and care towards the show.
Brock Johnson
That's awesome.
C
And you know, we kind of have had some really awesome success on the podcast recently. Tons of new subscribers on YouTube and on the audio version we had our most viewed video ever in the interview that I did with the head of Instagram, Adam Mozeri. And so it's a lot more eyeballs coming onto the channel and coming to the podcast right now specifically directly from that conversation I had. And I know that that at least partially influenced your decision ultimately, mom. And so I don't know if you wanted to share a little bit more about that.
Brock Johnson
Well, I just think about if I'm a viewer and I have just subscribed to the channel because I just this incredible interview and you know, I know that you are the source when it comes to Instagram. Like just to have landed that interview is so freaking huge. It makes me proud. I can't even tell you. But then to think about like if I'm viewer who's just subscribed because I watched you interview Adam tuning in and like who this 30something lady, just who's this older blonde lady talking about business and social media where I'm looking for this dude, you know what I mean? So I'm like, I think people are just going to keep in to build your tribe. First of all, you deliver such great information. You cut out all the stuff that's like, it's not needed. You don't need to know this. It's not helpful. Here's what you do need to know, here's what to focus on. And I Think people are going to be looking for that. You know, when I am here on Build you'd Tribe, I would love to do it with you interviewing me.
C
Yeah, totally. And I think that's such a smart way to make sure that your expertise is still on the show, because your expertise, obviously was what the show was founded on, and it's what so many people subscribe for. So definitely want to continue that. But I also think it's very admirable to be able to look at the bigger picture and remove your ego and be able to say, like, hey, people are coming to this thing for this reason, to make it more broad. But in our specific case, people are coming to this show right now because they look to me. So it might be confusing or challenging to then see this other lady. I remember after I hit a hundred K on Instagram, I made a post saying, like, jokingly about the haters, saying you only have followers because of who your mom is. And I remember I made that post and I got a lot of comments that were like, wait, who's your mom? And that was five years ago. And I remember thinking, wait, what? Like, someone knows me without knowing you. And it's been interesting over these last few years, a growing percentage of my audience doesn't know who you are. Or if I say, hey, my mom, Chalene Johnson, they're like, what? I know her, I follow her. But I didn't make that connection. So it's just more to the point of, like, you know, when we first joined forces on this podcast, 100% of people who knew me also knew you. But now we have a. An audience where those. Those two camps are somewhat splitting. And so I think it makes more sense to, you know, move forward in the direction that we're headed.
Brock Johnson
So for the last time, I will say it is my goal to be brief, to be bright, to make it fun, and then be done. Now I'm officially done for now.
C
That kind of makes me sad to hear, but I guess I'll have to finish with how I finish every episode, which is, and as always, happy networking.

This episode centers around their personal experience using ChatGPT to navigate significant changes in their podcasting venture, offering listeners actionable insights on leveraging AI to accelerate business growth.
[00:30] Brock Johnson:
“Can you imagine how valuable it would be to have the most incredibly intelligent business mentor on speed dial?”
Chalene and Brock open the discussion by highlighting the immense potential of AI as an unbiased and intelligent business mentor. They emphasize the necessity of integrating AI into daily business operations to stay competitive and avoid being left behind in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Brock underscores the accelerating gap between businesses effectively utilizing AI and those that remain hesitant or indifferent, stressing that AI proficiency is becoming a critical differentiator in the marketplace.
The hosts reflect on their long-standing partnership in podcasting, which began in 2012. Brock shares how their collaborative efforts have evolved, leading to the creation of two podcasts: Build Your Tribe and The Chalene Show. This dual-podcast strategy was initially intended to cater to different segments of their audience, but over time, the need to streamline their focus became apparent.
[07:42] Chalene Johnson:
“There has been consistency in terms of this podcast, and we've had millions of downloads and listeners who've grown alongside us.”
Chalene acknowledges the success and impact they've achieved, recognizing the challenge of maintaining multiple projects simultaneously.

[11:59] Chalene Johnson:
“I just had a very conversational discord with ChatGPT. I changed ChatGPT's voice to be a female voice. And so now I call her Chatty.”
Chalene emphasizes the importance of treating interactions with AI as conversations rather than simple queries, allowing for more nuanced and effective decision-making support.
Brock and Chalene reenact the session with ChatGPT, showcasing how AI can facilitate structured and insightful decision-making through targeted questioning.
Primary Goals for Each Podcast

After thorough deliberation aided by AI, Chalene announces a strategic shift in the podcast's management.
[18:40] Chalene Johnson:
“Moving forward, you'll still receive the same number of episodes, but you'll hear from me a little bit more often. I'm excited to devote all my time, love, and care towards the show.”
Brock expresses his support and pride in the decision, emphasizing the continued value and quality listeners can expect.
[22:19] Brock Johnson:
“It is my goal to be brief, to be bright, to make it fun, and then be done. Now I'm officially done for now.”
