hey everybody, Tim Miller from the Bulwark here. I just got off Ms. With my girl Alicia Menendez. We talked about a bunch of stuff so I just wanted to share it with you all as well. We talked about the increasing calls from Democrats for Pete Hegseth to resign and I offered some theories about why I think Donald Trump is continuing to stick with Pete Hegseth despite his obvious incompetence. We talked about the Democrats messaging on the campaign trail, weighed in on a James Talarico speech and why I think his message is connecting. Also, we brought in my girl Amanda Lippman who I've had on the Daily Pod before, who runs a great group called Run for Something and talked about the work that she's doing and other groups like the Bench that are making sure that there are more and better and younger Democratic candidates in races down ballot and in places and in states where Democrats have not been doing a good job of putting up quality candidates before. Calls are growing for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to lose his job over horrific conditions facing our service members aboard the USS Lincoln. The aircraft carrier has set a modern day record for consecutive days at sea, has been deployed for nearly nine months as part of President Trump's war of choice with Iran. Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer says Hegseth must be fired immediately and he is not alone. Ms. Now has reported on the absolute grim conditions our service members are facing on that ship. Multi showers, food shortages, running out of toothpaste, deodorant and soap. This is what our service members, people who are putting their lives on the line for us are dealing with and it is taking a toll. A sailor jumped overboard last week and was in water for about an hour before being rescued. The sailor's wife told Ms. Now that days earlier her husband texted her, quote, I think the boat is finally getting to me, and I really don't think I can keep up my peace act anymore. Hegseth was asked about the dire moment for our service members. Take a listen.

Completely misrepresented listen. We make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at every sing moment. Some deployments are longer than others, and I have more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody.

The administration has not given these service members a clear rationale for why they are there in the first place. Dod. DOD isn't just responsible for the conditions of the ship. They are responsible for why these service members have been deployed. And that's the part, it seems to me, that Hegseth can't really contend with.

[Tim Miller]

Yeah, there's no strategy and there's no exit plan. I was talking with Adam Kinzinger on the board yesterday, and he's like, look, maybe this would be different if it's like, hey, you know, at Labor Day, you know, we're going to rotate you guys out and we've got a plan to get a new carrier. There's none of that like, they have no strategy. They have no plan. The war was not pitched to anyone. It wasn't pitched to the American people, but it wasn't pitched to the, you know, sailors, soldiers, airmen. Like, it was a completely ill thought out, stupid decision from the president on a whim because he thought it was going to be easy. He thought it was going to last a weekend. And here we are. And these sailors have been out there for 250 days. I mean, the usual kind of rotation where you at least go to port is every 30 to 45 days. This is way, way, way beyond that. So it's no surprise that morale is low and especially when there's no end in sight.

President Trump, who's continued to support Hegseth publicly, says he has faith in him. Just take a listen.

The secretary of war, Pete Hegseth, and he's had some good victories lately. I will tell you. He's going to have a lot more. Pete Hagseth. Incredible. We have just a great group of people. Pete Hegseth, who's. Who was born for this role. I mean, he's doing a great job.

[Ms. Now Host]

Tim, who is the bigger risk for Hegseth? The president growing frustrated with him or Democrats seeking to impeach him, the president.

[Tim Miller]

And, you know, look, I think there are a couple of ways to look at why there is not more buzz about moving on from Pete Hegseth. Around MAGA circles. It's not as if they have not been willing to push aside people in this cabinet who have not performed well. It has tended to all be women. Is something that I guess would be noteworthy, whether that be Kristi Noem or Tulsi Gabbard or Pam Bondi. So the administration and Trump himself has moved on from people. So the fact that he's not given just the plain failures that anybody who has eyes can see leads you to wonder a couple things. I mean, maybe it's as simple as Vaughn was saying. Pete Hegseth is just carrying out Trump's orders. And for Trump to move on from Hegseth would be for Trump to look inside himself and talk about his own and reflect on his own mistakes, which is not something that Donald Trump does. So maybe it's as simple as that. I think a more ominous potential that we should at least think about is, you know, I think the other person I would look at who's extremely incompetent, who is staying in this administration despite tons of terrible press, is Cash Patel. And maybe Donald Trump has decided he wants pliable, less than competent people in those roles, given what might happen in the coming years. I think maybe he looks back at the way that Mark Esper did not exceed his demands about shooting protesters in the leg or the Insurrection act at the end of his first term and think he doesn't want someone like that in there and you'd rather have somebody incompetent and pliable. I think that is also a real possibility.

Democrats are digging into one Life under President Trump is too expensive. At events across the country yesterday, Senate candidates Josh Turek in Iowa and James Talarico in Texas, along with Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, all made the same. While billionaires thrive, regular people are struggling. And Democrats will fight to change that.

What we need in the US Senate is more people like myself from places like Council Bliss, Iowa, with lived experience with economic struggle, with health care struggle. Because when you've experienced it yourself firsthand, you'll have a different level of empathy and a different level of fight. Right now, our country is the richest it has ever been. N Tim First I want to know whether or not you think that messaging is effective.

[Tim Miller]

Yeah, I particularly liked Talarico's message there, tying the affordability crisis to corruption. And I think you can do the same thing with the Iran war which we were just talking about in the last segment. I think that that is how you put the onus of this On Trump, I think as a general matter, obviously economic issues are important in campaigns, important to talk about family budgets and affordability. That's always the case, particularly the case now with the inflation concerns that people have. But if these guys are going to win in red states, and you just showed Josh Turk, they're running in Iowa, Talarico and Texas, these are places Trump won by 11, 12, 13 points. You need some Trump voters. And so you need to make the connection to them that this is Trump's doing. Like, you're still struggling to pay the bills, meanwhile, him and his buddies are getting rich. You know, you're still struggling to pay the bills because Donald Trump took us into a stupid war with Iran that he doesn't have a plan for getting out of, that has increased the price of gas, the price of fertilizer, the price of groceries at the grocery store. I think that is a good message for Democrats to hone in on. And I think Talarico is modeling that

political finds that cost of living and economy are among the top issues of Trump voters. Non MAGA Trump voters, which I asked for a definition on. I will share what a non MAGA Trump voter is with you shortly. Say cost of living is the president's main failure. So those are people who did not self identify as MAGA but did vote for Trump in the past election. We're always asking Tim, like, what is going to be the thing that breaks through with those voters? Is this it?

[Tim Miller]

Well, yeah, because Trump can't lie about it. You know, look, if you always, if you compare this to the 2020 election, for example, a lot of us frustrated, like, why didn't the, why wasn't the insurrection the end for Trump voters? You know, you hear that question a lot around liberal and pro democracy circles. I think a lot of it was just because people wanted to believe his lies. Right. It didn't impact them. Like the January 6th insurrection might have impacted, like the state of our democracy or these things are a little hard to grasp. But it didn't their life. And so if he lied about it and they didn't see any counter evidence, it's like they're going to trust the person that they went to the dance with. This is a different story. Like, Donald Trump can't tell people that the economy's great when they're going to the gas pump and they know that it costs 10 bucks more than it did three months ago because they're the ones that pay the bills. They go to the grocery store, they know the bill's bigger than it was three months ago. They know that it's not true. So Trump's propaganda powers don't really work on this issue. And I think that if you combine that with the really gaudy choices Trump has been making, even MAGA people, you see these in focus groups. My colleagues here. Longwell does start to look at this and it's like I'm struggling. He's getting a new ballroom that's tough for people to square. And are those people gonna vote for Democrats? Democrats have. There are a lot of other political questions after that, but it is an opening.

According to Mother Jones, down ballot Democrats are smashing recruitment records nationwide and Pete Buttigieg is leading that charge in his home state of Indiana. Politico reports that the former Transportation Secretary is quote, backing a crop of mostly long shot down ballot Democrats in his former backyard. The first move in what his team says will be a number of state by state endorsements. Watch this.

I've traveled to more than 30 states. I've been to big cities, small towns, a lot of so called red districts and a lot of swing districts that are going to shape who controls Congress next. Everywhere I go, I'm meeting people who are hungry for something different and better. We need leaders who are ready to deliver a future that's better. And when I say better, I don't just mean better than now, I mean better than before. And that's part of what I'm focused on doing everywhere I go.

I want to bring in Amanda Lipman, president and co founder of Run for Something. Tim Miller is still with us. Tim, listen, I think Democrats have said for a long time, in fact, Buttigieg has said it himself. Democrats have to learn from Republicans who've been doing this type of effort for, for decades now. Talk to us about both the catch up race that Democrats are in and your thinking about why this is where Buttigieg of all people would choose to place his effort and attention.

[Tim Miller]

Yeah, look, state legislatures have been an area that Republicans have been investing in so long ago. I was a Republican when they were really focused on it. It's been over a decade now. Ed Gillespie was a big person on this and they had results. I mean just like they gerrymander congressional races, they've gerrymandered states in the state legislature that's bluish purple. States like Wisconsin have had Republican super majorities and so there have been real legislative consequences to that in a lot of states. So I think Democrats were behind the ball on that and are now catching up, which is good. And just also in general, and I'll kind of defer to Amanda's expertise on this. Democrats, I think, are now picking up thanks to a lot of the work that her group is doing just on running people in races to actually have contestants on the field. And I think that there was just some gifts, gaps there for the Democrats up until recently. And I think this is the right year to really lean into that because in wave years you get surprise winners. I remember the last time the Democrats had a wave election, they won a congressional seat in Oklahoma City and Charleston, two seats that aren't exactly like the home of the most liberal parts of the country there in South Carolina and Oklahoma. So I think that's it. I think Pete is doing this because he was a mayor and so he has experience with that. Pete's got a lot of time on his hands right now. He doesn't have a day job like some of the other potential 2028ers, but I think it's real work. I saw him when he was in Iowa when I went to interview him. He's been traveling all around the country. Like he said. There are other groups like the Bench that are working on things like this, trying to increase the, you know, the size of the Democrats benchmaking so they have good younger candidates out there running these races.
