Hey everybody, it's Tim O from the Bulwark. We have another backdown from our President when it comes to the war in Iran. You've heard this story before. We talked about it a bunch with Bill Kristol today, but I think it's pretty notable exactly the rationale Trump gave for not going forward with a planned
C
attack in Iran on his social media account earlier this afternoon.
B
So I'm gonna read the bleep and talk about the ramifications and implications of
C
which I think are quite serious.
B
I've been asked by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia MBS and the President of the United Arab Emirates mbz, to hold off on our planned military attack of the Islamic Republic of Iran which was scheduled for tomorrow in that serious negotiations are now taking place and that in their opinion as great leaders and allies as a deal will be made which will be very acceptable to the United States of America as well as all countries in the Middle east and beyond. The deal will include importantly no nuclear weapons for Iran, all caps. Based on my respect for the above mentioned leaders, I've instructed the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Kaine and the US Military that we will not be doing the scheduled attack of Iran tomorrow that have further instructed them to be prepared to go forward with the full large scale assaults of Iran on a moment's notice in the event that an acceptable deal is not reached. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
C
President Donald J. Trump a lot there.
B
First, I guess he's breaking the news on his own social media feed that they were planning a military attack in Iran tomorrow. Whether that was how real that was,
C
you know, we don't know.
B
Been a lot of threats, a lot of plans, a lot of discussion, you know, but we have seen that Trump
C
is pretty weak need on this and doesn't really have the stomach for escalating any run. He wanted this to be quick and easy like Venezuela.
B
So whether they were actually going to
C
do it, I don't know.
B
But I think it's notable.
C
As I mentioned on the podcast with
B
Bill today, General Jack Keane was on
C
Fox saying that he expected an escalation and troops in Iran soon, imminently. And he is somebody that is well
B
sourced inside the administration. He's saying on Fox. I found that to be a significant statement because it seemed like they're at
C
least seriously planning and looking into this, whether or not Trump ends up backing off and tacoing tbd. But they were definitely planning on doing it.
B
So that's the first element of this
C
post that is relevant.
B
I'm not sure it's. That's the most important part, though. I'm a little bit confused, as I mentioned on the pod today, why there isn't a broader chorus about how weak
C
and humiliated our president is with regards to this war.
B
And it is truly astonishing that the President of the United States of America, supposed leader of the free world, the supposedly most powerful country in the world, the most powerful military in the world, multiple times recently has said I was planning on using our power, but we
C
decided not to because a foreign dictator asked me to not do it. And so I'm going to let them push me around and tell me what to do.
B
And it's pretty crazy. You can't even imagine Barack Obama sending this tweet. You know, we're going to attack isis, but the Emir of Qatar asked me not to. And so I said, yes, sir, Mr. Amir, Honorable Amir, I'm not going to
C
go ahead with the attack on ISIS at your request.
B
I mean, like, literally, I don't. I mean, Fox News would have been
C
pandemonium if that had happened. The idea that Barack Hussein Obama was taking orders from Islamic countries and Sharia law, dictatorship.
B
But that's what's happening here. Like, Trump previously had said that he'd been asked by Pakistan nicely to stop the war. He's mentioned Qatar before, asking him to not escalate because they're worried about their own energy resources. And now here he is saying we are going to go forward tomorrow with the Sharia law dictators in Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia told him not to escalate the war. And so he's not going to do it. So Americans are going to continue to
C
pay higher gas prices.
B
The Iranian people who allegedly we are
C
going to help are still going to suffer under this regime.
B
The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed and America will continue to look desiccated and weak and paralyzed on the global stage because Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE want us to. This is like, without recent precedent. And just the level of humiliation is just beyond anything. There's all this discussion of Jimmy Carter and how weak he looks during the hostage crisis, and this is on a level far beyond that. It looks as if the Emir of Qatar has put a dog collar on our president's neck and is just kind of walking him around the block and telling him what to do. Why are we taking orders from Qatar or the UAE if you just take them at their word, and this was a critical priority for our country that we invade Iran, and I guess coordinating
C
with them at some level would be expected. We have bases in these countries, but
B
they are dictating the strategy. The Emir of Qatar is telling us what to do. And then you put on top of that, I think the most serious element of all this, which is the Trump
C
family's on the take from all these dictators.
D

Kushner is getting money from MBS Trump's kids are getting money from the UAE
C
in their crypto deal.
B
Trump is getting his plane from Qatar. So, like, the Trump family is taking money from foreign dictators that don't share our values, that practice Sharia law in their own country. The Trump family is taking money from them, and then they are dictating what our foreign policy should be like. I mean, shouldn't the President of the United States be totally independent from influence of foreign leaders? Like, think about all of the panic that you've seen in the right wing media over the years about Sharia law, all the panic in the right wing media about foreign countries infiltrating our government and influencing our government. This is happening right in broad daylight. Like, three Arab dictators are influencing our government and they're using their money to do so. They're bribing the President of the United States. Like, how else do you read it? You know, I don't exactly know what's happening in these conversations. And we should have investigations into it on Capitol Hill. You're thinking even Republicans would want to
C
have investigations into it.
B
Like, are they using their money to influence our foreign policy in Iran and the UAE and Saudi and Qatar are using their oil money to bully the President of the United States, to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, to increase oil prices. That benefits them, but hurts Americans, working Americans. Why is Trump listening to them if not for the fact that he's been bribed? It is just on its face, I think, pretty clear that that's what's happening. So I don't know. I think it should be a major news story. You would think that it'd be a front page news story tomorrow that the President is being bribed by three Gulf dictators and that is influencing how we're engaging in an active war. And I feel like the level of
C
outrage about this is a little bit muted.
B
I mean, I just think that in any other case, with any other president, there'd be a front page banner New York Times story about the influence of these Arab states on our government because they have good access to Trump, because they're paying off Kushner, they're paying off Don Jr. And Eric, and they're giving him a fancy plane and who knows what else they're giving them. Like, this is why we have rules. This is the whole point of having gift rules. Why governments and government officials and family members of government can't take money from foreign influences, from foreign interests, because we don't want them to be impacted by the interests of those Foreign countries, they should be serving the people that elected them and put them in there and that pay them and to pay their bills. That's not what is happening in this country.
C
We had, obviously the state of Israel
B
and Bibi Netanyahu came to Washington, pitched us on this war in the Situation Room.
C
And Trump basically did exactly as Bibi
B
hoped he would do. He bought the pitch. And now that we're in this quagmire in Iran that's causing harm to Americans and people around the globe, rather than doing what is necessary to get us out of it, he is being strung along by a different set of foreign interests that are using their financial resources to influence them. It is like a total affront to the way that the system should work. It's a total affront to America First.
C
I mean, America First.
B
And it's so fucking laughable that you're trying to sell this as America First. Americans are getting hung out to dry by the Emir of Qatar. Why? I don't know. I mean, maybe the President can offer a better rationale for why the interests of NBZ and MBS and Qatar are
C
more important to him than the interest of people in America paying five bucks a gallon. But I think it's pretty clear that that's right now whose interest Trump cares about. It's these guys, the buddies that he has over there that are using their oil wealth to bribe his family.
B
So it is a pretty big outrage.
C
It is something that I'm going to be adamant that Democrats investigate to the broadest extent of their powers should they take over Congress this fall.
B
And I don't know, might be something that's worth sending a little note to
C
the Fox Watching MAGA fan in your life.
B
Why? Why is it that Trump is doing what Qatar and Saudi Arabia and the
C
UAE say while you, your wallet is getting absolutely raided.
B
I think that if she was on
C
the other foot, we know that's exactly what those guys would be doing. And in this case, that would be correct, because it is a total outrage that the President is allowing himself to be dog walked like this by these Gulf states.
B
So we'll keep an eye on it. We're gonna go deeper on foreign policy
C
tomorrow in the pod. But I was pretty astounded by the post that Trump put up today. So I wanted to get that to you guys.
B
We'll be seeing you soon.

Guest: Bill Kristol (referenced)
Theme: The Trump Administration’s Iran Policy and Influence of Middle Eastern Autocrats
In this episode, Tim Miller of The Bulwark delivers a sharp, urgent monologue reacting to President Trump’s last-minute cancellation of a planned military attack on Iran. “It looks as if the Emir of Qatar has put a dog collar on our president’s neck and is just kind of walking him around the block and telling him what to do.” — Tim Miller (05:31)
“The Trump family is taking money from them, and then they are dictating what our foreign policy should be like. I mean, shouldn’t the President of the United States be totally independent from influence of foreign leaders?” — Tim Miller (08:01)

“Why is it that Trump is doing what Qatar and Saudi Arabia and the UAE say while you, your wallet is getting absolutely raided?” — Tim Miller (12:54)
Miller’s delivery is sharp, incredulous, and bracingly direct. He uses vivid metaphors (“dog collar on our president’s neck”) and doesn’t hesitate to call out double standards or to use strong language (“so fucking laughable”). The urgency in his voice underlines a sense of outrage and a call for accountability, aimed both at Democrats in Congress and at everyday listeners with MAGA relatives or friends.
This episode of Bulwark Takes lays out a damning portrayal of Trump’s Iran policy decision-making—arguing that it’s not just about weakness, but about conflicts of interest and the influence of foreign autocrats with financial leverage over the Trump family. Miller’s passionate monologue challenges right-wing and centrist listeners alike to confront uncomfortable truths, suggesting Congressional action and grassroots pressure as necessary responses.
