Will Saletan
Hey, it's Will Salatan from the Bulwark. You know, Donald Trump and his people lie every day. But it takes a special kind of liar, a complete phony, to sign a written agreement with Iran and then, and then lie to you about what is literally in the agreement. And that is exactly what J.D. vance, our beloved vice president, is doing this week. So today I'm going to show you what Vance says about the Iran deal and then I'm going to show you what's actually in the deal. Okay, so the whole point of this war was supposed to be to stop Iran's nuclear program. And Vance claims that under this deal, Iran has agreed to nuclear inspections. Here's what he told NBC.
J.D. Vance
Will nuclear inspectors be allowed back in? Yes, absolutely. That's in fact one of the core parts of the agreement is that the IAEA and the United States are going to help Iran destroy the highly enriched stockpile. And that's something that's spelled out very clearly in the mou.
Will Saletan
It's spelled out very clearly. He says. Oh, it's a core part of the agreement, he says. And he said the same thing on CBS.
J.D. Vance
The text is very clear. There's nothing about $24 billion. What there is clarity about, though, Ed, is that IR gives up their nuclear program for the long haul, they allow a real inspections regime.
Will Saletan
A real inspections regime. He says, oh, oh. He says the text is very clear. Okay, so let's look at the text. Here is the full text of paragraph 8 of the Iran deal as published by Fox News. So this is the paragraph that covers the nuclear program. There is, there's nothing, there's nothing in this paragraph about inspectors. It says the iaea, the International Atomic Energy Agency, will show up one time at the beginning and then nothing. There's, there's no follow up, there's no inspection regime. So that's lie number one. Okay, so let's move on. Vance claims that Iran has agreed in this deal to permanently destroy its enriched uranium. And here's what he told Ross Douthit of the New York Times.
J.D. Vance
The Obama Iran deal allowed them to generate a stockpile of enriched uranium. Our deal ensures that that stockpile is destroyed and eliminated. When people say, you know, is the destruction actually in the Memorandum of Understanding?
Will Saletan
The answer is yes, it's in the Memorandum of Understanding. He says, okay, that is the formal title of the deal, the MoU. Under the deal, he says, the nuclear material is destroyed, it's eliminated. And here's what he said at the White House on Thursday.
J.D. Vance
They have promised that they would allow inspectors in to destroy that highly enriched stockpile. And then of course, it's not usable anymore. You take it somewhere else.
Will Saletan
It's not usable anymore. He says, really? Here's what paragraph 8 actually says. Let's put it back up on the screen. It says Iran has agreed to quote down blending of stockpiled enriched material. It doesn't even say all enriched material. And what exactly is down blending? Here's a report from the foundation for Defense of Democracies. It explains that down blending is not. It is not destruction of nuclear material. It is dilution of the material. And here's the fun part. It says the dilution is reversible. So when Vance tells you that under the deal the nuclear material will be destroyed, that it won't be usable anymore, he is lying. Okay, next, Vance claims that under the deal, Iran will no longer sponsor terrorism.
J.D. Vance
It does go and say, look, if the Iranians are willing to change their ways, if they're willing to behave like a normal country, stop trying to build a nuclear weapon, stop trying to fund terrorism all over the Middle east, then we are willing to actually fundamentally transform our relationship with them. That's what the President has offered. Now, of course, we would need to verify that. We would need to see real progress and real action.
Sean
They know that's part of the deal.
J.D. Vance
Absolutely. It's written right there in the agreement, Sean.
Will Saletan
It's right there in the agreement. He says, in fact, he can tell you exactly where it is. It's in the first paragraph.
J.D. Vance
What paragraph one of the agreement says is effectively that Iran commits itself, just as the United States commits itself, to regional peace and stability. And part of that, Jake, is that the Iranians have to stop funding violent terrorist organizations. They have to stop funding regional instability.
Will Saletan
Okay, so here is paragraph one. I'm looking at it and I'm looking for anything about peace or stability, and I'm not seeing it. And in fact, those words, peace or stability, they don't appear anywhere, anywhere in this document. So the paragraph says Iran and America will stop their, quote, military operations. That's us. They mean we, the United States, we will stop our military operations because we're the ones who do our killing through an official military. Iran uses proxies. It uses terrorists. And that is not covered anywhere, anywhere in this deal. Okay, next, tolls. Vance claims that Iran will not charge any more tolls on ships that carry oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Here is the question that he was asked on cnbc.
CNBC Interviewer
The United States is saying it will take down its blockade at the same time, that there will be free passage, that no one will have to pay anything to go back and forth through this. The Iranians, I think, have suggested that this is just for the next 60 days. Do you get the sense that this is a more permanent situation where the strait will be reopened even beyond that 60 day period?
J.D. Vance
Well, our expectation is that the strait is going to be opened in a toll free way for the long term.
Will Saletan
Oh, oh. Our expectation is Iran is giving up tolls for the long term. The long term, not just for 60 days. He says, let's see what the deal actually says. Here is paragraph five. It says Iran will ensure safe passage with no charge for 60 days only. They literally put that in the agreement. They wrote for 60 days only. And then Vance goes on TV and says, oh, don't worry, it's not just for 60 days. Okay, next. What does Iran get from us? Well, it's certainly not $300 billion. I mean, Vance is very clear. We are, we are not, we are absolutely not arranging $300 billion to go to Iran.
Sean
The number one report that I've been reading leading up to this interview tonight is that the Qataris are giving them $300 billion with the sign seal and approval of the U.S. did the U.S. ever sign off on the Qataris paying them that money?
J.D. Vance
No, we've not. The agreement says they are not getting a single dime of American money. That's just not what this is. What the agreement does say, Sean, is again, if the Iranians behave and if there are sanctions relief and if the Iranians are integrated into the world economy, we would invite other countries, not us, but other countries to invest in their country.
Will Saletan
Oh, oh, if other countries want to invest in Iran, oh, they can do that, but not us. No, no, we have nothing to do with it. We absolutely did not approve the Qataris or, or anyone else investing $300 billion in Iran. So let's see what the agreement says about that. Okay, here is paragraph six. It says, quote, the United States of America undertakes with regional partners to develop a definitive, mutually agreed plan with at least $300 billion for Iran. We, the United States, we undertake that. And then Vance tells you, oh, oh, we never approved any such thing. In fact, he says the deal explicitly rules out giving them that money unless Iran goes through a complete transformation. The big print, he says, oh, it's printed right there in the agreement. He says, but if you look at the agreement, you won't find any of that big print. It's not there. He's just making it up. And he says the same thing about Iran's frozen assets. He says, we're not going to unfreeze those assets till Iran meets a bunch of other conditions.
J.D. Vance
But that requires the Iranians to actually honor their end of the bargain. So when people say that billions of dollars of assets will be released, that's not true.
Will Saletan
Absolutely not true. He says, and here's what he said at the White House on Thursday.
J.D. Vance
They don't get a dollar of unfrozen assets. Their money, not our money, but they don't get a dollar of unfrozen. They actually perform under the deal.
Will Saletan
Under the deal. He says, oh, it's all in the deal. So let's check the deal. Here is paragraph 11. It says the United States will, quote, make fully available Iran's frozen or restricted funds and assets. And it says we're going to do this, quote, upon the implementation of the MoU, not when the final deal is supposed to be signed in 60 days. Now, now on the implementation of the MoU, which is the interim deal we just signed. So under this deal, the assets have to be unfrozen now. Oh, but Vance says if Iran doesn't honor a bunch of other conditions, they will never be able to rebuild their nuclear program because they won't have the money to pay for it.
J.D. Vance
If they don't do the right things, if they don't allow the verification regime, they're never going to have the money to rebuild their nucle program to begin with.
Will Saletan
Actually, that paragraph I just showed you, which is paragraph 11, it says the unfrozen funds quote shall be made fully usable for payment to any ultimate beneficiary designated by the Central bank of Iran. In other words, Iran can do whatever it wants with that money. And you know the most amazing thing about all of these lies? So before the text of the deal was released, Vance claimed. He claimed that Iran was lying about the deal. He said he was telling the truth about what was in the deal and Iran was lying about it. And he accused the press, our press in this country, of accepting Iran's lies. Instead of believing him, you'll have somebody
J.D. Vance
on a propaganda channel in that country, in Iran who will say something that isn't true. And I think it's. It's sort of expected. It frustrates me too, but it's expected that some Yahoo is going to say something about the deal that is untrue. What really bothers me and frustrates me and is unexpected when the American media literally picks up talking points and propaganda from the ReGC that has no support in the text of the agreement that we've actually negotiated.
Will Saletan
Oh, the outrage. How dare the press believe those lies? How dare they believe some. Some Yahoo who puts out propaganda about the deal. Oh, with no support in the text of the agreement. You know who that Yahoo is? It's JD Vance. And if he'll lie to you about a document that you can read for yourself on the Internet, why should you believe anything he says? See you next time.

In this episode of Bulwark Takes, Will Saletan dissects a series of public claims made by Vice President J.D. Vance about the newly negotiated Iran deal, contrasting Vance’s statements with the actual contents of the agreement. Will Saletan ends the episode with a forceful takeaway: J.D. Vance is not just spinning, but outright lying about the Iran deal, often about details that anyone can easily check. The episode urges listeners to trust their own scrutiny over political assurances, especially when the truth is publicly accessible.
