Hey everybody, Tim Mo from the Bulwark here. Some rumors about Trump's health going around this weekend and I guess we can confirm that he is alive and with us for a couple of reasons. One, we saw some pictures of him with his granddaughter going to golf today. I'll get to that in a second. But also he sent a deranged truth where he was karening in only the way that Donald Trump could Karen about, I guess the work that was done on the Rose Garden, the abomination that they have inflicted upon the outside of the White House. Replacing the Rose Garden with the patio from an au bon pan. I want to just kind of go over what he's posting about and for those of you who have been blissfully unaware of what I'm referring to with these kind of rumors about his health, I want to talk to you about that a little bit. So I guess let's give that backstory. So and I should. I think this is important to note because it was it on. I believe it was on was on this Wednesday. No, it was with me and Sam. It was earlier this week. I was commenting about how Trump has demonstrated really kind of remarkable stamina for somebody that's 80. Like, you don't see me complimenting Donald Trump very much, but, you know, I get some pushback from people in the comments saying, like, oh, how hard is it to just lie out of your mouth hole for hours a day? It's like, kind of hard to lie out of your mouth hole for hours a day, you know, to have the focus of, you know, doing a three hour, whatever they wanted to call that cabinet meeting, multiple press availables, taking questions. Sure, he sounds stupid half the time when he's answering the questions, but, like, you know, he's getting information in. You know, he's giving anecdotes about things and talking about things that show that, like, you know, Donald Trump is the Apprentice, as head of the Apprentices, didn't fucking know his ass from his elbow when it came to Washington. Like, he, there was a, there was just an unbelievable amount of stuff that he didn't know. And so, you know, when you hear him talking about what they're working on, you can tell he's getting briefed too. In addition to the fact that he's just performing. And, you know, I'm a content performer now, right? This isn't the coal mines. You know, I'm not a, I'm not a janitor, I'm not a house builder, I'm not a bricklayer. I get it. But like, you get tired, like, the focus, having to focus for that many hours and talk is tiring, especially for somebody who is elderly, extremely elderly, in the case of Donald Trump. And so I noted that he had had a kind of surprising amount of stamina for somebody his age being out talking and not like, you know, doing the thing that you see and starting to doze off. You know, we've seen Trump do it. Obviously you've seen people do it. The head nods, shirts that happen. We haven't seen that. So it's noteworthy. Like right on the heels of that, where I was like, it's kind of surprising how much he's out. Old people need rest. Shouldn't he be getting some rest? And, you know, he's sending deranged bleeds all night long. And here we are, basically, since that comment that I made. He hasn't been seen. He does the, you know, he did, I believe it was three press veils in one day on Monday this week, three different events where he was, the press was assembled, he's on camera. And then Tuesday they have the, you know, thing we've been talking about all Week, the death of Stalin stuff where you have his assembled cabinet talking to him about how he's going to win the noble. That went on for three hours, ten minutes, I think. So that was Tuesday, and nobody saw him again until this morning, Saturday morning, where he's walking out with his granddaughter to go to the National Golf Course out in Virginia. You know, we got a couple pictures here. It's hard to really tell from that picture. You know, you're not a doctor, but he looks frail. He looks feeble. To me, he looks feeble. It does not look like somebody that has a skip in his step heading out to the golf course. We'll say that that's just based on those two pictures. But for a guy who has been on camera all the time, it's been part of their strategy that, you know, we discussed this with Susan Glasser on Tuesday. The first presidency was a lot of Trump watching TV and then commenting about it. This time, it's like he is the TV show, it's the Truman show presidency. For that to just stop middle of the week with plenty of things happening that he could be talking about. I mean, obviously internationally, with Israel, Gaza, you have Russia and Ukraine, you have this tariff ruling this week where a circuit court essentially said that some of the tariffs he's put forth are unconstitutional, and that's being challenged. Fed stuff, firing of Lisa Cook, threats to Powell. There's so much happening. There's plenty of reason for him to be visible, and he hasn't been. And, you know, that's noteworthy. And you saw this spiral on social media, a lot of death commentary. I'm not out here saying that he's dying, just saying that it shouldn't be surprising that a frail, elderly man who has a really bad diet would have a crash after working so hard. You know, who predicted that that would happen? Alex Jones, like, two weeks ago, you know, broken clocks and all that. Alex Jones said essentially this, like, Trump's working too hard. And, you know, some, some viewers are, you know, I think, is he really working that hard? You know, I mean, he is out there a lot. Okay. Is he what that means? You know, et cetera. He is. He's, you know, talking, performing on his feet, doing things. Trump traveling, decent amount of travel. And for somebody his age, it's just, it's a lot. People need rest, old people need rest. And, and it seems to me that what we're seeing is a guy that hit a wall and, and, and maybe that. That stamina that he was showing doesn't have it anymore. So we'll see how it turns out. We'll see what happens the rest of the weekend. Obviously, people are getting a lot of laughs over this, you know, and, and it's due, given how much Donald Trump has mocked and smeared other people about their, you know, aging and health issues. You know, it's good for the goose, is good for the gander. But it's possible we're seeing a president that's hitting a wall from, from a, from a health and energy standpoint. I don't. We'll see. But it's not nothing. I'll tell you this. I'm not over here telling you, oh, that end is near. He's going to die. These are the final days. It is noteworthy and funny that the hand bruises he had her like look quite similar to the hand bruises the queen. The queen had her before she died. But I'm not a doctor, not saying the end is near. But what I am saying, I think that you can just say clearly is that the pace might not, might be too much for him. I mean pace might be too much for him at his age and it's only going to get worse as he deteriorates. So I just, you know, nothing against old people. I've got a lot of old people in my life that I honor and appreciate. But there's a, you know, there's a, there's at each stage in life there is something you should be doing. You know, there's a role for you at each stage in life, a valuable role for every person and maybe somebody that 79 that role isn't, you know, high stakes negotiations with life or death and hanging in the balance. So that's my, that's my thoughts on Donald. We'll watch the stamina in case you are one of those who's like maybe, maybe. Who knows? I saw some, I saw some tweets about how maybe that picture of that really feeble peaked looking man walking with his granddaughter to the golf course was, was not really Donald. I don't even want to say that. It's obviously it's just a gag. It was trou. There's not, we're not in the movie Dave, or whatever that movie was called. But in case you are one of those, in case there are any questions, I want to read you a bleat Donald Trump sent this morning. That is something only an alive Donald Trump could send. I used at the White House the most beautiful marble and stone available anywhere. That's how the bleep begins. Services are very important to me. As a builder, as anyone knows, I built many great buildings, blah, blah, blah, at the White House. I'm very proud of the beautiful stonework we did in the rose garden, in this case, using limestone. Plus, the rose garden is completed and far more beautiful than anyone ever had in mind when it was conceived of decades ago. I don't know that that's really true. I don't think that people were imagining, oh, could outside the White House, you know, might it look like the Panera Bread in Des Moines, Kind of like patio, maybe like a panera bread patio. It's just what we've always dreamed of for the White House. I don't know if that's the case, but Donald Trump thinks so. Apparently so. He feels like it looks very nice, but then something sad happened to him. Three days ago, while admiring the stonework, I happened to notice a huge gash in the limestone that extended more than 25 yards long. It was deep and nasty. He's running out of words to use is another thing as his kind of. As his mental strength deteriorates a little bit, he uses words like, in what way could a crack in the limestone be nasty? Anyway, he loves the word nasty. I started yelling, who did this? And I want to find out now. And I didn't say that in a nice manner. I wondered, was it vandalism or was it stupidity? Lo and behold, because of the fact that we've installed the finest security equipment anywhere. I would hope so. It's a fucking White House. They brought back these stupid people with their boss washing in sunglasses. It was a subcontractor that was installing heavy landscaping on a steel cart that was broken and tilting badly with it, rubbing hard against the soft, beautiful stone. I love and respect the great workers and contractors, but something like this should never happen. Now I'll replace the stone, charge the contractor, and never let that contractor work at the White House again. But how great is the video equipment? We caught them called. And the level of Karen Ing here is just off the charts. This is truly insane. You know, if somebody, if one of the other parents at school was posting a screed against a subcontractor on their patio on social media and posting video surveillance video of the subcontractor to demonstrate that they've caught them in this mistake on the remodel of their home, I would be like, keep me as far away from that parent as possible at daddy daughter dance, okay? Like, this is the behavior of a totally insane person at any level. There is no reason for the President of the United states to be micromanaging the install of this ugly patio. And even if he just is obsessed with this, and this is the thing that he cares about more than actual, you know, the costs of things, the reasons that he got elected. He cares more about the patio than he cares about the forgotten man. Which obviously he does, then, okay, but like posting a video footage, shaming some subcontractor because they screwed up the limestone, like, why this is deranged behavior from the president. And it's so deranged that I got to tell you, it had to be him. It had to be him. That you have all the quotation marks, fewer exclamation, fewer all caps than usual. So if you want to be a conspiracy theorist, fewer all caps than usual. But I don't know who else has this kind of addled mind. This combination with the accession, with the terrible aesthetic of the White House, with also shaming working people with also, you know, like giving yourself weird brags, like how you have the best security equipment anywhere. It feels sui generis. It feels like it has to be Trump. So based on this, this insane karening on Truth Social, I can report I do believe him to be alive. Also based on the picture of him with his granddaughter where he looks like he might need a cane. So that's the latest. We're going to keep you posted. Want to make sure that you have all the accurate information about what is happening with the deteriorating body and mind of our president. And we'll be back here soon. Subscribe to the feed. Podcast: Bulwark Takes
Host: Tim Miller (Bulwark Team)
Date: August 31, 2025
This Bulwark Takes episode, led by Tim Miller, dives into the speculation around Donald Trump’s health after his sudden days-long disappearance from public view. Tim unpacks the rumors, reviews recent evidence of Trump’s activity—including a bewildering Truth Social post—and reflects on Trump’s apparent stamina and what his frailty might mean for his public role. The discussion is marked by Tim’s signature wry humor and sharp observation, blending political analysis with candid skepticism.
Tim Miller on Trump’s stamina:
“The focus, having to focus for that many hours and talk is tiring, especially for somebody who is elderly, extremely elderly, in the case of Donald Trump.” ([04:27])
On the ‘Rose Garden Karening’ Truth Post:
“The level of Karening here is just off the charts. This is truly insane.” ([13:32])
On entertaining conspiracy theories:
“Who knows? I saw some tweets about how maybe that picture of that really feeble... was not really Donald. I don't even want to say that. It's obviously just a gag.” ([10:00])
Tim Miller skillfully blends sharp political observation with biting humor, questioning both the media’s health speculation and the underlying realities of an aging presidential candidate. He threads together Trump’s week—high energy followed by a conspicuous, unexplained lull—with broader commentary on the pressures of high-profile, high-stakes public life for the elderly. The “deranged” Rose Garden post serves as comic relief but also as a sign Trump is still ‘authentically’ himself, albeit possibly diminished.
Listeners leave the episode both amused and alert to the subtle, real questions: Is Trump physically and mentally up for the campaign and (potentially) another term? And what does it say if the answer is “not really”? As always, The Bulwark delivers by demystifying the drama—and calling out the absurdity—without sensationalism.
