Nancy Glass
Hi, I'm Nancy Glass. In the Burden of Guilt podcast, we shared the story of Tracy Raquel Burns, who as a child was told she was responsible for the death of her four month old brother Matthew. You heard the lengths she went to in order to get the truth and in the process get justice for Matthew. If you remember, after several twists and turns in the courtroom, it was Tracy Raquel's father, Jan, who was ultimately found guilty of killing baby Matthew. And while you didn't get to hear from Jan on the podcast, you will be able to see him and hear from him in the Burden of Guilt docuseries on paramount, premiering on February 4th. Jan is currently serving time at a Florida prison and when you see him, you will see how he's been affected by the ravages of time and time in prison. He did talk with me a handful of times and he answered my questions, but I can't say the answers he gave me were truthful. In fact, there's plenty of evidence that the answers were outright lies. Here's a part of the conversation you will see on Burden of Guilt the.
Tracy Raquel Burns
Docuseries how do you think the baby Died. What do you think happened to him?
Jan
I don't really know how to answer that question. Because I don't know. I didn't know that this was going to end up being the way it ended up being. I should have never, ever let Tracy be blank. That goes without saying. I can't change that. I can't fix it. I can't correct it. The only thing I can assure you, Ms. Class, is I didn't harm that little boy. I've done the time for a crime I didn't do. That's all that matters.
Tracy Raquel Burns
You sound very sympathetic, but Kathy and Tracy Raquel both have talked about how you beat them and how you hurt them.
Jan
Okay, one. I never put a hand to Tracy. That's outright lie. I'll ignore you before I do that. You can't go anywhere in my history and find anything other than somebody's mouth saying I did something. There's probably 25 other women out there that I. That are still alive, that I dated all through that time. Ask any of those girls if I ever put my hands on them.
Jessica
And.
Jan
And I never did.
Tracy Raquel Burns
What happened to Tracey Raquel on the day that Matthew died? Did she fall down a cement staircase or was she pushed down a cement staircase?
Jan
Where did this come from?
Tracy Raquel Burns
Well, that day she was taken to the pediatrician's because she was bleeding out of her ears. And the story was that she fell down a concrete staircase.
Jan
What? That's. I don't know. Whoever's been feeding you this bull crap. That's what this is. That's bullcrap. That's a story that somebody just made up. And it sounds like someone with demented mind making these. This crap up.
Tracy Raquel Burns
Well, Jim, there's documentation of it, but.
Jan
Let'S don't butt me none, okay? Let's don't butt me any. I'm trying to explain something to you and you're coming to me with this bull crap from out of left field.
Tracy Raquel Burns
Well, there's documentation and there are medical records.
Jan
Show me the documentation and show me the medical records where that child was harmed in any shape, form or fashion.
Tracy Raquel Burns
What about Tracy Raquel saying that you put out a cigarette on.
Jim
Listen, Tracy came up with some of the doggone stories of it. That part about me putting her, Kathy in a closet, pouring a beer on her. You should have. Somebody should have asked her. Well, where's the. Where's the burn mark?
Tracy Raquel Burns
Well, she was a small child.
Nancy Glass
I mean, there's a chance it healed.
Jim
Listen, I'm not a sadistic person. I'm not a sick person. Yeah, I've made some mistakes in my life, but one of them is I've never murdered anyone, I've never raped anyone, and I've never harmed a woman. And I damn sure ain't never hurt a little folks. You can ask me why I didn't do this and why I didn't do that and hell, I don't know why I didn't do something. Things that I didn't do, but I didn't do them. But that don't mean I hurt that little boy. And anybody that believes I did can kiss my backside.
Nancy Glass

Podcast Summary: Burden of Guilt
Episode: S1: Bonus EP 3 - Jan Berry Sandlin
Release Date: January 22, 2025
Hosts: iHeartPodcasts and Glass Podcasts
In the third bonus episode of the first season of Burden of Guilt, hosted by Nancy Glass, the spotlight intensively focuses on Jan Berry Sandlin, the father of Tracyraquel Burns. This episode delves deeper into the controversial and emotionally charged case surrounding the death of Tracyraquel's four-month-old brother, Matthew. As the docuseries unfolds on Paramount+, this episode serves as a pivotal bridge between the podcast's investigative roots and its dramatized portrayal in the series.
Burden of Guilt narrates the harrowing journey of Tracyraquel Burns, who at the tender age of two faced the profound trauma of her baby brother Matthew's untimely death. For decades, Tracyraquel believed her brother's death was a tragic accident, a narrative upheld by a family that shrouded the incident in silence, leaving her yearning for truth and justice.
In this bonus episode, Nancy Glass revisits the central mystery of the case—Jan Berry Sandlin's alleged involvement in Matthew's death. The episode reveals that, despite Tracyraquel's childhood belief, medical records later implicated Jan in the tragic event. However, Jan asserts his innocence vehemently, raising questions about the validity of the evidence and the possibility of him being a scapegoat.
A significant portion of the episode features a tense and revealing conversation between Tracyraquel Burns and Jan Berry Sandlin, captured in the docuseries. Here are key excerpts illustrating the confrontational dialogue:
Tracyraquel Burns [02:46]:
"How do you think the baby died? What do you think happened to him?"
Jan Berry Sandlin [02:54]:
"I don't really know how to answer that question... I didn't harm that little boy. I've done the time for a crime I didn't do."
(02:54)
Tracyraquel Burns [03:29]:
"You sound very sympathetic, but Kathy and Tracy Raquel both have talked about how you beat them and how you hurt them."
Jan Berry Sandlin [03:43]:
"I never put a hand to Tracy. That's outright lie... There’s probably 25 other women out there that I dated all through that time. Ask any of those girls if I ever put my hands on them."
(03:43)
Tracyraquel Burns [04:13]:
"What happened to Tracey Raquel on the day that Matthew died? Did she fall down a cement staircase or was she pushed down a cement staircase?"
Jan Berry Sandlin [04:27]:
"Well, that day she was taken to the pediatrician's because she was bleeding out of her ears. And the story was that she fell down a concrete staircase."
(04:27)
Tracyraquel Burns [04:25]:
"Well, there's documentation of it, but."
Jan Berry Sandlin [04:40]:
"I don't know. Whoever's been feeding you this bull crap... It's a story that somebody just made up."
(04:40)
Tracyraquel Burns [05:01]:
"Well, there's documentation and there are medical records."
Jan Berry Sandlin [05:18]:
"Show me the documentation and show me the medical records where that child was harmed in any shape, form or fashion."
(05:18)
Tracyraquel Burns [05:26]:
"What about Tracy Raquel saying that you put out a cigarette on..."
Jan Berry Sandlin [05:32]:
"Tracy came up with some of the doggone stories... You should have. Somebody should have asked her. Well, where's the burn mark?"
(05:32)
Jan Berry Sandlin [05:53]:
"Listen, I'm not a sadistic person. I'm not a sick person... But that don't mean I hurt that little boy... Anybody that believes I did can kiss my backside."
(05:53)
Jan Berry Sandlin's responses reveal a man deeply entrenched in a denial that contradicts Tracyraquel's recollections and existing evidence. His aggressive dismissal of allegations and insistence on his innocence, despite incarceration for the crime, suggest a complex interplay of guilt, defense mechanisms, and possible manipulation of facts. This interaction underscores the series' central theme of uncovering buried truths and confronting uncomfortable realities within familial relationships.
Throughout the episode, Nancy Glass provides critical analysis of Jan's statements, highlighting inconsistencies and the emotional toll on both Tracyraquel and Jan. She emphasizes the documentary's role in presenting a multifaceted narrative, allowing listeners and viewers to engage with the complexities of truth and memory in traumatic circumstances.
This bonus episode of Burden of Guilt serves as a crucial extension of Tracyraquel Burns' quest for truth and justice. By featuring firsthand accounts and raw confrontations between Tracyraquel and her father, the episode enriches the narrative, offering deeper insights into the psychological and emotional labyrinth that defines this case. As the docuseries premieres on February 4th, listeners are encouraged to explore the visual and narrative depth that complements the podcast's investigative storytelling.
Listeners and viewers are invited to watch all episodes of the podcast to fully grasp the intricate details before tuning into the Paramount+ docuseries. This comprehensive approach ensures a nuanced understanding of the case, fostering a more profound connection with the themes of accountability, forgiveness, and the enduring human spirit in the face of unresolved grief.
