Kerry Hartman
Hi, everyone, I'm Kerry Hartman, one of the producers of Burden of Guilt. Thank you so much for listening, for writing to us, for your feedback, and for caring about Jermaine and Bobby's story as these episodes are released. We've been wondering what it's been like for them to relive all of this, so we reached out after the latest episode. First I had a conversation with Bobby and then Jermaine, but we'll start with Bobbi Gumprite. I want to talk to you a little bit about episode three. So this episode is called the Front Gate. A lot happens, including an analysis of the court testimony, and that was when you were 19 years old. What has it been like to hear that episode and hear that analysis? And how did that strike you?
Bobby Gumprite
It was interesting to hear the entire transcript, the way that it was replayed in the podcast, some of the details. I had actually forgotten myself just because it was so long ago, and with years of drug abuse, you tend to not have the best memory. So there were parts that did get me quite emotional listening to it, but I don't think that anything was misportrayed or incorrect in any of the observations.
Kerry Hartman
What was the most surprising part that you hadn't recalled until you heard it in the show?
Bobby Gumprite
The fact that a juror had said that I had come over and thanked them after they had come back with the verdict.
Kerry Hartman
You're talking about Jermaine's trial after the jury found Jermaine guilty?
Bobby Gumprite
Yeah. I don't remember doing that, but it seems like at that time that would have been in my character and my thought process to say something like that.
Kerry Hartman
Bobby, you're a very direct and open person. You said that this episode brought you to tears. Why?
Bobby Gumprite
I've spent a lot of self reflection and time examining my actions. So I've gone through a lot of the emotional states through that. But when you hear it in a format like this, it puts a whole nother level on it, I think. And it just. It made me very emotional, reminded me of what I was and what I never want to return to. I think a lot of the times, if I start to get emotional talking about the way that I was or the things that I had done, a lot of the times people see it as sorrow, and it is to a point, but a lot of the times it's joyful tears that I'm no longer that person.
Kerry Hartman
Episode three was also a tough listen for Jermaine. There were so many details about his own case that he was hearing for the first time. So here's my call with Jermaine Hudson. I want to talk to you about the Front Gate episode three. One of the things that happens in that episode is Bobby explains exactly how he came up with the lie that he told and how he worked it all out. What was it like for you to hear him explain that?
Jermaine Hudson
To be honest, it was painful. I wasn't aware of all the lies he told to his family. I wasn't aware that he'd been a problem child since he was 8 years old. I never knew a lot of the things that he expressed, a lot of the things that he revealed. It really brought tears to my eyes because for a person to go to that extent, you know, to cover up the things that he's doing, the things that he's suffering with, and the drama that comes behind it. You brought me along in your problems, in your life. You made me a part of you drug habit, you know, never talked. I never thought no human being could sit down and create a theory so vicious. To hear how he broke down everything from the beginning to the end, and he gave the ins and outs of how he was going to do it. And it really just stunned me. I was like, wow, Whoa. Damn.
Kerry Hartman
You were always under the impression that it was a mistaken identity, right? Not something that he made up.
Jermaine Hudson
I really did in the beginning. I just really felt like it was a mistaken identity because, you know, they look at all of us as the same. And I really just felt in my heart as a mistaken identity. This wasn't a mistaken identity after all. This was a guy that really was the timer to hide his drug abuse from his family. You didn't want to be exposed and you didn't want to be looked at as a failure. You didn't want to be looked at as a drug addict. So what you did was you tried to take all of that and you tried to hide it by doing what you did. But then you destroyed another family behind your lies. Everything got revealed to me in Burden of Guilt.

Chelsea Handler
This is Chelsea Handler from Dear Chelsea after the Big Game. Like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials. And there was one that stayed with me, it was from the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate, and it wasn't loud or flashy. It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school and another student who chose not to ignore it. As someone who was Jewish, that moment felt very real to me. Not dramatic, just familiar. And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself, but the impact is still huge. If you saw the Blue Square spot during the big game, it's worth thinking about. And if you want to show support, sharing the Blue Square is one small way to do that.
Ryan Reynolds
You know that feeling when a story just grabs you and won't let go? That's the kind of drama that's waiting for you on Disney Hulu. Mysterious post apocalyptic thrillers like the acclaimed Hulu original Paradise, action adventure dramas like Daredevil, Born Again, and iconic medical dramas like Grey's Anatomy. Or maybe you want your drama with a side of comic relief. With shows like High Potential, find the drama you want on Disney and Hulu with a bundle. Subscription terms apply.

This bonus episode of Burden of Guilt revisits the aftermath and emotional toll of the events covered in the podcast’s first season, focusing on firsthand reactions from Bobby Gumprite (whose false testimony contributed to Jermaine Hudson’s wrongful conviction) and Jermaine Hudson. Producer Kerry Hartman conducts in-depth follow-up interviews to explore how both men are processing the public retelling of their story, what’s changed in their understanding, and what it means to publicly confront the truth decades later.
This bonus episode offers a powerful, real-time window into what it feels like to have a life story publicly dissected—and underscores the lasting reverberations of both lies and truth within the criminal justice system.
