And seeing the UFC go to Paramount plus and CBS for $7.7 billion and get away from the pay per view model. Now, everybody, as long as you're, I would assume, a subscriber of Paramount plus now you get to watch all the UFC main events for free.

Because you watch the trailer, and it's like, you have no idea what the hell is going on. It starts off with them in a room, and they're like, you guys know, blah, blah, but no one else can know. And then the one guy's like, if we don't stick up for this girl now, who's going to stick up for us when it happens? And then all these things. And then I heard Mr. Milk check or whatever his name is. Oh, I saw his name. I know that's a big name. That's like saying Voldemort in this spot. So that's a. That's a big deal. But shit, dude. Yeah, we took the first step. I put the trailer on. Next step is watching the first episode.

Shadur operated well. One thing that worries me a little bit is Cam did hold on to the ball for a long time. He had great protection. But none of the Tampa Bay starters, their defensive line wasn't really coming at all. So that's. That's going to be a little different when he gets into week one.

Yeah, he just talks about, like, he talks about, you know, understanding the perspective he has on the opportunity to inspire a younger generation. And he's hearing about people in prison talking about they're watching him and how can you be down with that? And he's like, he is. He acknowledges that he's in a position that he's never been in before, that he's had to face adversity wise. And he's like, they don't have to let me go out there and play. And basically just taking advantage of the opportunity, trying to stay steady and also having the perspective of people rooting for him and knowing that he does inspire and how that, that lifts him up. I just thought he handled it really well. I've liked, I've enjoyed watching him operate. The noise is obviously very loud around Shadur Sanders. You got people using him as a vessel to argue their angle, the other angle going on. And it's just he's got his head down, he's working. It seems like the Browns do have a plan with them with all their different guys on the roster. And the fact that he did get to go out there and he performed well, like he was poised again, he was urgent but like calm while he was, while he was operating. I thought he looked good, man.

Yeah. Browns are going to have themselves a very interesting, very interesting situation at the end of camp with how many quarterbacks they have. And then you just throw into Sean Watson who's sitting there at guaranteed 260 million dollar contract, who's not going to start the year. And they got Flacco, the old guy, two draft picks in the third and fifth round. And then Kenny Pickett's also sitting there as well. They have to make some big choices. Can't keep that many quarterbacks on your roster. And it seems like they got a lot of talent there too.

It'll be interesting to see how the year unfolds. I think the, the big positive coming out too is like people talk about the limited reps he gets in practice. Seeing the, seeing how he operated in, in, in a, in a live game, I think speaks volumes because when you are lower on the depth chart, you don't get a whole lot of reps. Like when I was our first preseason game and I came out to Tennessee and I got to work with the Twos, it kind of happened because injuries happened ahead of me. I'm Going from having four to eight reps at practice to then you're operating with the twos. Maybe two days before your first preseason game and you're still expected to go out there and perform. Coaches want to see how you handle all the information coming to you. And if you can go out there and execute like when the bullets are flying, the games live. So even when people are arguing about, oh, he's not going to get starters, this, that, the other doesn't matter. It's. It's the operation, it's. The lights are on the moment. Even though it's a preseason game, it's still big for those guys. There's a lot of pressure on Shadur being a fifth round pick, being a guy with limited reps, all the noise around him and then going out and having his game, his game day routine and having him operate under pressure. Run the operation, execute the offense, goes through his progressions. I think he helped himself a shitload with the way he played the other day.

And the argument of it being a preseason game plays for a lot of guys. With Shadow, I don't think it plays because he is. The people that want to succeed are putting a microscope on them. The people that want to hate and hopefully he fails are putting a microscope on every single. Every single pass, every single snap, how he's operating, every single thing. So yeah, yeah, we should, er. To go out there, do what he did. That is a very impressive thing to do for him. So hopefully there's a great story. There's a great story we can, we can look at. Football is right around the corner.

She's like, if your mission is wings, have wings. And so I order the Parmesan garlic. It's like my OG favorite flavor. She's like, if you like the Parmesan garlic, you should put the Cajun with it or do this X, Y and Z. She starts putting a cocktail sauces for me. Comes out incredible. And they also had the try on sauce, too. How to get two plates? Two of ten, buddy. It was amazing. And extra crispy. Amazing. And you can just tell they're just a great community there.

And I'm also a fan of blue cheese. I did not hate it. I did not hate it. Tasted pretty good.

Yeah. Fans, a strong term. I'll say. You know, taste buds change every couple of years. Everyone develops and grows. It's been a while since I've had blue cheese. The first. When I did first try it, I was still in my head about hating it, but I went back to it halfway through the meal. And it wasn't awful. It's a mental. A moldy cheese is so crazy to me. That's like. That adds flavor.

You had a running back. You take third overall, fourth overall. Whichever it is, who's a generational talent, you have a lot to be excited about. That's what I'm saying. I think the Chargers. I think the AFC west is the Big ten of the NFL. It's going to be knock them down, drag them out. You've got the Chargers and the Raiders, who are going to try to force the ball down your throat. Then you have the pseudo not being disrespectful, just the lack of a better word. Pretty boys of Kansas City, where they're going to get in their short. The short yardage situations, still throw it, still dish it out because they have an elite talent at Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert takes the next step he needs to take. I could see them being second, possibly beating out the Chiefs, but I can see the Raiders over the Bron over the Broncos. It's not a crazy take. It's just kind of how when I'm looking at the AFC West, I'm feeling it in my brain. That's what I'm looking at.

Broncos are nice. And I. I am definitely taking away from the. How much they have going for them, but I just look at the Chargers and the Raiders and I just get the vibe that I think Geno Smith is an incredibly underrated quarterback. I think Pete Carroll is such an elite coach to be at his age and to coach with the enthusiasm he does. He's got guys in the building that want to be. Harbaugh is a proven method that works. He's got a. He's got so much talent in that roster. They're just going to get better. They just continue to do that. And the Chiefs are the Chiefs. So it just like. I think all teams are great. I just. Who's going to be the bottom of the barrel? Yeah.

So the reason I had 25 sitting on the reverse hyper is I feel like you have to have a foundation on the reverse hyper because nobody's going to use it when it. Or nobody's going to ever use it without plates on it. Like coming from the. The Dobson School when We were working out of Vandy. There were always 45 pound plates. You had a foundation of plates on certain racks. And the Reverse Hyper, he always had 45 pounds on it. So people could just get on, they could do their thing. Myself, my low back can't handle the 45s just yet. However, I thought 25s on there would be good. So it's like the 25s that would sit on there. I walked over, I moved the three because I took two off the left side. So I walked over to the right side, grabbed the second one to even it up at two on each side, like on the main rack. And then I was thinking that we just always have 25 pound plates sitting on the reverse hyper. So if you want to get a set, get that low back going, you know, after we get up off this podcast and you. We've been sitting in flexion the whole time, you go and hit a set of Reverse hyper and you already got the 25 sitting on there. So you never have to move it. All you do is add to it. If you're trying to get. Trying to get better. But when you strip it, you don't strip it bare. You just strip it down to the 25s.

So your feeling is that the way the weight room sits right now with the 25s on the reverse hyper is how it should be 24. 7 when you leave.

This is awesome. You guys have treated us amazing walking on the field. You guys make us feel like we've been a part of the franchise for a long time, and that's really special. So we appreciate that. We just had the. Someone call it displeasure of interviewing Josh Allen, and It was basically 25 minutes of us just trying to get each other with dick jokes. I'm sure everybody watching the show is like, what are we. What are we doing?

[Will Compton]

They're just sitting there in silence.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah. And so I guess it's like, yeah, you've obviously paid him a lot of money. You've agreed to a lot of things. You've drafted him, all the things. How many times has he gotten you with a dick joke?

[Brandon Bean]

Oh, he got me early on, you know, Brian Dable, I think. You know, I'm sure it was already in Josh, but once he knew his coach was. Was feeling at the time, he just took off. And, you know, anytime he was around, you became guarded. It was hard to have a serious conversation because I'm like, you know, I know there's a punchline here, like.

[Taylor Lewan]

Yeah.

[Brandon Bean]

And you just walk into it. What's hysterical is when you see him getting someone else and you know it's coming. You just watch him setting up his own softball to knock it out of the park. But he's. That's what we love about him. He never changes. But it's. It's hard sometimes when you don't know where he's coming from because you're just like. And when he's like, I swear. I swear I'm not. I'm like, dude, you're the boy that cried the wolf right now.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah, exactly.

[Will Compton]

They've almost said he must have passed the torch to Joe Brady, because Joe was prepping us before. He's like, you gotta get Josh on a dick joke. Because I'm telling you, he's coming for you.

[Josh Allen]

He's coming for you.

[Brandon Bean]

He's always setting it up. Everything. He's got an angle, and sometimes he's got a partner on the angle. And Joe's. Joe loves that stuff. Joe's got a lot of same shenanigans that day. Well, I think that's why they mesh so well.

[Josh Allen]

Even as we were walking off, I was like, he hit us again with, you got to get him. And I was like, have you ever seen him get. God? He's like, no. I was like, oh, my God.

[Brandon Bean]

He's been got. But it's. It's a rarity. I don't even remember how it. How it's happened.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah, anytime that ever happens, you guys need to put it public. We put it out in the local newspaper and let it take.

[Brandon Bean]

We need to get it on Hard Knocks at some point. That way, it's. It's. It's framed, it's filmed.

[Josh Allen]

That should be the only. All production of Hard Knocks needs to look and be like, the only thing we need to do is get Josh on with the dick joke before this whole production.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, we got one month to get this.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah, one whole month. How has the process been with Hard Knocks?

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, it's been. It's been good. You know, candidly, you know, you're always going in like, man, I don't. I don't want those cameras around. Like, you just.

[Taylor Lewan]

You.

[Brandon Bean]

You feel guarded or what is it like? Because you've seen other teams go through it, you've seen situations where you're like, ooh, I don't know if I'd want that on camera. But the crew here has been great. We met with them and probably early June, kind of talked through our culture, our team, what's important to us in this, and let's. Let's make this a win for you. Obviously, they have a job to do to put on a good show, and, you know, there's part of us that's like, hey, we're proud of our organization. We're proud of our culture. We don't want to give away anything competitive, but let's. At the same time, let's show people a little bit behind the curtains, you know, where we're comfortable. There's obviously going to be a line where you just. You can't totally have everything unfiltered, whether it's meetings in my office, meetings in Sean's office, or just certain conversations with players. But. But we're trying to peel that back. Obviously. Episode one just went last night, and, you know, we got four more weeks, so hopefully it's a win. Win at the end, a win for us and a win for them.

[Will Compton]

I Love it for the fans, too. They just get the inside look. Just being a fan on the outside, like, when you're growing up and Hard Knocks comes on, the music, the Voice, everything about it, and the fact that they're doing it with you guys, I feel like Bill's Mafia just eats it up.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, it's a hell of a production, how they do it. And like you said, it's. If we all work together, it can be great for the fans. And obviously, our fans, they eat everything up. They follow us. You guys have played against us down in Nashville. They. They showed up.

[Josh Allen]

They show up.

[Brandon Bean]

They show up down there. It's.

[Josh Allen]

Nashville's a bad example, everybody. But. Yes, but Bills fans do show up like crazy.

[Brandon Bean]

That's. It's. Honestly, that's what's so cool about our fan base. So many places we show play in Miami every year and. And it's. There's a ton there. It's just it almost, you know. You know, at home, your place is going to be behind you, but it's like, when you walk out, you're expecting to walk into the ring like. Like Rocky, you know, Drago and Russia, and you're like, holy cow. There's. There's people that are actually cheering for me, kind of. It's that, you know, it's that extra motivation, I guess. You feel like, man, these people traveled here to come support us, and they're making a lot of noise for us.

[Josh Allen]

It's got the most college feel of all time. When you're. When you're, like, pulling up to a game, it's a night game, Sunday Night Football, whatever it is, and you get there, whatever, three, four o'. Clock. And you see those fans going crazy. Have you ever felt the urge? Deal Good. Spray with some mustard. Or hit it. Hit a.

[Brandon Bean]

Hit a table or something like that one time. I would love to, but it probably wouldn't. Well, we win the Super Bowl, I'm in there. I'll do it. Like I said.

[Will Compton]

You'll let him put you to a table?

[Brandon Bean]

Oh, dude, put it to a table.

[Josh Allen]

Spam with mustard.

[Brandon Bean]

If we. We win the Super Bowl, I'm probably getting fired because I'm gonna do some crazy shit.

[Will Compton]

At the parade. It's like, the table's got to be set up. Bing. Goes through the table.

[Josh Allen]

You gotta be doing a speech, and then when the speech is over, take out a couple of them.

[Brandon Bean]

I mean, I expect y' all there, though.

[Will Compton]

We'll set it up.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, I expect y'.

Like, we've been a part of this franchise for years.

[Brandon Bean]

This place would.

[Will Compton]

Having a GM on. I want to ask, like, how do you get into. How does one grow up and want to be a gm? Like, I want to say, who. Who's the GM we had on?

[Josh Allen]

Howie.

[Will Compton]

No, not Howie. For the. Ran. Ran Carthage with the. With the Titans. And he talked about, like, he was obsessed with magazines as he was growing up. Like, when did you know? Like, I want to go the path to become a GM of a national football team.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, it's funny, honestly, I just wanted to find a way to get in and help the team. Like, I played sports through high school. Unfortunately, it didn't work out after that. And so when I was in college, I was originally going to be. I was like, I loved who my high school football coach was and what he meant to me. And I was like, man, I'm going to go be a high school football coach, run my own program. Maybe I'm. Maybe I'm good enough. Maybe some small college will want me. But started kind of having, you know, bigger aspirations and tried to work my way into the NFL. I got lucky to start as an intern with the Panthers, but. But honestly, the first five, six years there, I'm just trying to show that I got value. How can I help? Whether it's pick somebody up the airport, you know, make coffee, like, whatever it is, like, you know, anything that it took to help us win, you just feel that team pride. And that's kind of what I wanted. But I work for a man in Marty Herney who just was constantly giving me more and teaching me and. And, you know, five, six years in, I'm starting to get promoted and work my way up the ranks. At that point, you know, I started really asking him a lot of questions. Not necessarily on the spot, but just when it was convenient for him and learning some of the, you know, the path that he took and some of the obstacles he faced and what I needed to do to prepare myself. But at the same time, I also told myself, like, there's. There's 32 of these. The odds of that, like, I'm not going to be crushed if it doesn't happen. And that's why I try to tell people that I talk to, like, hey, like, definitely shoot for. For the moon, like, but don't feel like you didn't make it. You. You know, I caught many breaks. Right place, right time. Just work your. Work your ass off. Be where you're Supposed to be treat people the right way. And I think the sky's the limit if you're willing to do it. Don't chase this for the money either.

[Josh Allen]

You. When you're working up through the ranks and you're trying to go the path that you've eventually made it to, at one point, you have to become the grim reaper.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah.

[Josh Allen]

And a lot of people don't know Grim reaper is a guy. It's one of the lowest guys in the totem pole in the scouting department who has to sit outside the locker room. And as guys are going to meetings, they're the ones that says, hey, cut day. Coach wants to see you. Bring your playbook. Or your GM wants to see you. What was that first experience like for you? Having to tell a grown man, hear.

[Brandon Bean]

Your dreams over, dude, It's. It's brutal. Like, I mean, I can remember the days of having to be that guy. You walk through the locker room and the guys are kind of looking at.

[Will Compton]

You like, there he is.

[Brandon Bean]

Here comes peppering you.

[Josh Allen]

The vets who know they're safe are kind of giving you a hard time.

[Will Compton]

Oh, yeah.

[Taylor Lewan]

Oh, yeah.

[Will Compton]

Being, get out of here.

[Brandon Bean]

You know, they're constantly doing that. But I tell you, the wackiest thing in 2010, the league was about to go through the. The lockout. And so our staff had, you know, our owner at the time had made it, made a decision that because we're going to lockout, no new hires for the organization while our player engagement director left. So we're in the process of needing one. He was like, we're in the lockout.

[Josh Allen]

You're.

[Brandon Bean]

You're in charge of this for. So for a year, Marty Ernie told me I had to be the player engagement director, and I was still having to get people to cut them. I'm like, man, I'm supposed to be supporting these guys, and I'm also cutting them.

[Taylor Lewan]

Like, it was.

[Brandon Bean]

It was an awkward deal. It was. It was one of the weirdest times of my life. But it's good experience. I learned a lot. But at the same time, I was like, this is. This is.

[Will Compton]

This is weird. Having a heart to heart with them one day, and then the next day you're like, hey, remember that conversation?

[Brandon Bean]

Bring your playbook.

[Will Compton]

You know, I told you to keep working. Like, I think you're in a good spot. Yeah, I just got a call. It ain't. It ain't good.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, you're not good enough.

[Josh Allen]

Works over. It's done.

[Will Compton]

Not naming. Not naming any players, but what's been your, like, scariest or most vulnerable time where you've had to cut somebody and it didn't go the way you thought it would.

[Brandon Bean]

It wasn't scary. You know, I would say when. When we moved on from Shady McCoy here he was. He was not thrilled. Let's just say that it was the shortest cut meeting that I ever had. You know, he just. He wasn't really interested in talking about it, and he. He gave me a few. Few nice words and said, he's out. And, you know, at the end of the day, I still respect Shady for what he, you know, for his career and loved him, and I knew it was an emotional moment for him, and so I understood all that, and I. You know, I even reached out to him after. You know, it is what it is. But that was. It was an interesting one.

[Will Compton]

Yeah.

[Brandon Bean]

At least.

[Josh Allen]

It's got to be so tough. I mean, the guys that come in and, I mean, are rookies, and they're kind of, like. They kind of know, have an idea.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah.

[Josh Allen]

But the guys that have played for a franchise helped, like, bring back a franchise. Those got to be the hardest ones.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, no, it's. I mean, we went through that last year, last off season, you know, we. We moved on, you know, from about five or six captains from our team before that are really kind of helped us. You know, Sean and I got here in 2017. This team had not been in the playoffs in 17 straight seasons, and we were kind of, you know, we needed this culture shift. We needed this new dynamic. And so the Jordan Porters, the Micah Hydes, the Mitch Moore, like, so many of these guys were with us to help us build this team and build this culture. But the business starts to get in the way, whether you can't resign them, whether you've got to ask for pay cuts that don't work out, or you got to move on. And those were. Those were very tough because you don't want to say goodbye, but you also have to start, you know, planning for the next iteration of this Buffalo Bills team. And it's kind of like Josh was younger than all those guys. He still was kind of ascending into that leadership role, and now he's, you know, the. The elder statesman of all the captains.

[Josh Allen]

How. How is it? I lost my train of thought. Go ahead, Will.

[Will Compton]

How? Yeah, how difficult is that knowing, like, you know, the business, the cap space, all that becomes involved. You're having to have a conversation with these players who have been like, help build the cloth of what you guys are, whereas you're trying to, to navigate the value they bring tangibly and intangibly into a locker room and then also weighing it with the costs of doing business. I'm sure that those are just, those are probably tough conversations, like, how are you, I guess, going about that in your mind when you're in the war room or you're breaking down the strategy of it all to make those types of hard decisions.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, I mean, there's some sleepless nights going through that. You see what's coming down the pipe and you're constantly looking at the cap and you're seeing where their numbers are. You're also looking at some of the guys that are coming up for extensions, which we did a lot of extensions here this off season. So there's constant preparation. And you, you dread those conversations. They are painful because, you know, some, in some ways, I do myself a disservice. I try to, you know, get to know these guys as people, not just as players for this team, but who their families are. You know, Buffalo is a tight area. Our wives do a lot of things. Wives, girlfriends, and it's a big support network. And you want to be there because, as you guys know, you've been in the locker room. Life happens to a lot of people in a lot of different facets. And the best way to get through adversity is to surround yourself with, with people you care about and they kind of help, you know, we all help each other through the tough times. And so that's hard. You know, at the, at the same time, I know that Terry Pegula has hired me to make the best business decisions for the Buffalo Bills. So you try your best to remove your heart, as hard as that is, and just try and think, you know, with your brain of how we're going to do this, how you're going to navigate the cap, the cash, and, you know, the ascending players versus the guys that are starting to descend and just making sure, you know, you thought it through. Those are some of the longest thought out decisions that you make, knowing, you know that it's going to pull on.

[Josh Allen]

When we were on the field talking earlier, you were giving a lot of praise to the leadership of your team when the demar Hamlin situation happened. I'd love for you to have an opportunity to speak on it and talk about how the team rallied. It was obviously scary for not only the Bills, but for the entire NFL to see something like that happen on live tv. But just talk about the the team, how they rallied around how just the effects of being in the locker room, you know, right after that as well.

[Will Compton]

Yeah. Families, the city. I mean you're really not a GM at that point anymore for that next week.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah. And as like a player, like I've never been on the field with something, something scary. But like you I've been on the field or a guy, you know, his legs facing the wrong way or arms facing wrong and it really like it's kind of snaps you out of oh like this. A lot of things can happen while I'm on this field, I'm not just playing a game. And I can't imagine how those guys were reacting and handling. Handling all those things. So maybe just a little insight to that would be awesome.

[Will Compton]

Yeah.

[Brandon Bean]

I mean, as you guys know, you guys played a gladiator sport, and you. You have to get yourself into that gladiator mode when you enter the ring. And. And all these guys in that moment were in that. And then you're exactly right. You're all snapped out of it, and it just, you know, the fear of someone's life is. Is hanging in the balance, and you're like, man, that's not something you ever expect any day, much less when we woke up that morning, that. That never even crossed your mind. And you're like, man, this is a brother of ours, and we're going to put our arms around him. And, yeah, we went after. You know, he got in that ambulance and went off. And we're, you know, we. We prayed as a team. We got up and. And there's all sorts of emotions. You know, there's. There's tears, there's. There's fear, there's unknown. There's a lot of things. And it was a tough moment for. For the league. The Bengals were amazing. Like, you know, this was a big game. It was fighting for the one seed at the time. There's one week left. This isn't a preseason game or week three. This is like week 16, week 17. And a lot was riding on this game. It's national tv. And I thought the Bengals and Zach Taylor and that crew did a great job. You know, we grabbed our leaders together. Sean, myself and. And our guys were, you know, and we were the same way. We'd say, how can we go back out there? You know, we don't know that whether Demar is going to make it or not. And so at that point, we just kind of prayed.

[Will Compton]

We put.

[Brandon Bean]

We sent a group of us over to the hospital to support his family, and we worked on getting our guys, you know, back to. Back to Buffalo, and we lined up counselors the next day. Like, football was secondary, and even though we had a game to play, I don't think we practiced but about a day or a day and a half, that Thursday, Friday was all about the guys. Just wanted to know how Demar was doing and what he was doing, and there's no playbook for it. You just do your best and support everyone, and there's no wrong answer. There's no wrong question. There's no wrong emotion.

[Will Compton]

What. What is A decision that you've made where you second guessed where it's turned out to be right, and then were you second guess did the decision and you're like, ah, I wish I could have that one back. Yeah.

[Brandon Bean]

I mean, I don't know, Will. There's, there's a lot of my second guess myself all the time. Yeah. I mean, listen, anytime you're, I would say for the most part, it's, it's when you're in the draft, like the draft is moving like that and you know, I don't want to say names, but there's definitely times you're up, you know, you're down to two players and, you know, sometimes you got to go with your gut. You got, you've done all the work. You've, you've, you've heard the coaches out, you've heard the scouts. Scouts been following these guys for sometimes two, two and a half years, and we've gone through it, we've met with them, we've researched them, and now you get on the clock and you try to do as many scenarios as you can, especially the first couple rounds, but it can even be in the third, fourth round, you're just down to two guys and, and the room is torn, and sometimes you got to go with your gut and you definitely follow those out. You know, the end. Sometimes you're smiling, sometimes you're like, damn, you know, I went wrong on that one. That's, that's part of it. You're never going to bat a thousand and again, I, I just don't want to throw anybody's name.

[Will Compton]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, fair enough. We were talking with Howie, and the one that got away for him was Justin Jefferson. Is there one? You look back and you're like, yeah, could have had that one. Could have had.

[Brandon Bean]

I mean, there's not.

[Josh Allen]

Trying to keep the mic. Try to keep the mic closer.

[Brandon Bean]

There's not one that's particular that I, that I can think of from that standpoint, but there's definitely been plenty. I mean, there's, there's guys in free agency that you feel like you have them ready to go or there's, you know, trades that you're, you're almost willing to do. I mean, I remember the year before we signed Vaughn, we were heavily discussing that with Denver. Denver trades him to the Rams. And, you know, we're trying to work through our, through what we could afford and, you know, what we're willing to give. And ultimately Denver decided to move him. I think, you know, just AFC to NFC versus to another AFC contender. But you know, Vaughn was playing really good down the stretch and you know, we had a, you know, that was the year we lost at the end of Kansas City. We just lost in overtime, couldn't get a stop. And so that one, you're like, man, if that had worked out, could that have been the difference? You know, it's, it's not in the moment, but once your season's over, you kind of look back at, yeah, you.

[Josh Allen]

Get that 30,000 foot view and you're like, hey, where could the piece have been?

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, that got us over the hump, no doubt. And that's ultimately, after that season, we definitely decided, hey, we, we've got to be able to get the Mahomes, the Lamars, the Burroughs. You know, the AFC is loaded. We got to be able to get, get these guys down. And we did go out and, and get Vaughn at that point, but you know, unfortunately next year he was rolling and pops his ACL in in Detroit. But, you know, it was what it was.

[Will Compton]

Yeah.

[Josh Allen]

With a. On the, on the other side of the coin, like the best move. If you look at your room, of all the moves you've made as a GM and you're looking at this trophy case, what would be like the number one move you think you've made as a GM in your life?

[Brandon Bean]

Oh, it's Josh. I mean, just, you know, that year we, we made the playoffs in 17. Tyrod was our quarterback and we got in, I think we were like nine and seven and we played Jacksonville really good in the first round and Jacksonville ended up in the AFC championship, I believe against New England. But that was kind of the start of building this culture. We did not have a team that could make a run. We were, I mean, Sean and the staff, they got everything out of that team and then some. But we knew we needed to go find a franchise quarterback and we were, you know, it's easier if we had lost that year, but we also, we didn't want to lose. We wanted to win to reset a foundation. And you know, at the, at the same time that makes it tougher to get. I think we were at pick 21 to get up to be able to get a, you know, a Josh Allen or one of the quarterbacks in that 18 draft. So we, we traded an offensive tackle to get with Scentsy to get to 12, and then on draft day moved to seven with Tampa to get Josh so that, you know, he's, he's clearly the franchise quarterback that we needed. You know, if you look at the successful teams and the teams that are steady. This team had not. You know, one of the big reasons this team did not make the playoffs was they never were able to settle on a quarterback from, you know, since Jim Kelly left. You know, all those years, I made four straight Super Bowls. They won with that crew. They had continuity with a franchise quarterback. And that's one of the conversations I had with the Ghouls when we were hired. We have to put our heads together and do our jobs and find that piece. So we did what it took. We traded up and got him. And, and, you know, I don't, I'm not sure we can make a better decision going forward.

[Josh Allen]

Was it so clearly Josh, to where you're making these trades and sending off a tackle and giving up some sort of draft equity for. To move up even farther in the draft that night? Were there doubts? There's people in there going, are we sure this is the guy? Are we sure we want to give up this much? Because at that point we're talking about a kid from Wyoming who ran like a robot on his 40 yard dash.

[Will Compton]

Yeah, we weren't.

[Brandon Bean]

Did you bust his balls about that?

[Josh Allen]

No, no, I didn't. But I literally, as you're talking about.

[Brandon Bean]

He's our guy. I'm thinking about him running that 40 the way he did. I was like, we should have.

[Brandon Bean]

It was a goofy ass run.

[Josh Allen]

Goofy ass run. Yeah. It was still good time.

[Brandon Bean]

Forrest Gump run.

[Will Compton]

Yeah, yeah, he really did. Because you're trying to move up that much too. It's got to be a very methodical game of trying to position yourself with the goal being Josh Allen.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, no, we, we, we did a lot of work on all those guys. It was a, it was a quarterback loaded draft which we were excited about and we were, we were swinging for the fences. I mean, I was having conversations all the way up to pick 1 and 2 and 3 and 4, but couldn't. Couldn't make anything land. We had something set with Denver at five that fell through. They ended up taking Bradley Chubb. Elway was the GM and, and declined at the last minute. You know, once he was on the clock, we had something set up. I honestly thought when the draft started we were going to pick Josh at 5 and. But fortunately we're still able to get him at 7.

[Josh Allen]

Quentin Nelson. So you, you're looking at Broncos. Broncos doesn't work out and you're like, okay, Indy doesn't need a quarterback.

[Brandon Bean]

Well, I tried to trade with Indy. They were, they were set. They were sitting at seven and then Tampa was at seven. Tamp. Yeah. So Joe Shane, who's now the GM and the Giants, he initially made the call to Tampa and then once they got on the clock, Jason Light, who's still there. Jason does a great job. I've known him for a number of years. And we went back and forth for a minute. There was a hang up once or twice. No this and that, and he knew we were dying. And I think they still got the guy they wanted at 12. I think it was a win. Win. You know, they had a quarterback at the time. Jameis was still kind of getting his ey opportunity there. And yeah, so it. Fortunately it worked out, but, you know, until you get your name on the clock and he's still on the board, you. You don't relax. I mean, you're, you're, you're definitely feeling the sweats and then get the cold sweats a little bit, too.

[Josh Allen]

Talking about hang ups, are you a guy that hangs up on somebody or are you getting hung up on.

[Brandon Bean]

No, no, it wasn't that. I'm just saying, like, no, it was like, no deal. It was like, yep, no, we're not, we're not doing that.

[Josh Allen]

And so you guys just sit there quietly for a second.

[Brandon Bean]

So then talk, you know, hang up, talk about a second. And finally got him back on the phone and, and got it done.

[Josh Allen]

It's funny, you know, when I see Jason now, we still laugh about it because I think I asked for like a seventh at the very end, I asked him to throw in a seventh round. Like, dude, you're killing me. Can you at least give me something like, yeah, I just need another player here to pick. We're trying to rebuild this thing. We need, we need another guy to draft and. He laughs. You had to have that damn seventh round or date.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah.

[Will Compton]

Who's in your mind? Who is. Who is an underrated GM out there?

[Brandon Bean]

Oh, man, that's a, that's a great question. You know, I think there's, there's a, there's a lot of good ones. You know, I think Goody in Green Bay has done a really good job. You know, he, he was in a tough spot with that Aaron Rodgers deal moving over to Jordan Love, and, and it's hard because your fans are, you know, really loyal. You Know, obviously they were, they had already gone through that thing years ago before he was the GM with. With it going from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. And that was a little bit, you know, tough with that fan base at time. Now Rogers is the guy and they've won, I think they won a Super bowl with him. And, you know, Jordan loves an unproven piece the way Rodgers was. And, you know, I think there was at times where, you know, he felt like Goody was maybe getting attacked a little bit, but he had a plan in place and they really, you know, use those pieces and attacked what they did. I thought they did a really nice job of getting, giving Jordan love, have a lot of weapons and, you know, they're. They've been ascending ever since.

[Josh Allen]

Talk to me about the combine, because I feel like when you're, when you're training for the combine, everyone's like, it's the most important interview of your life. Which it absolutely is. How. And it's really, with the NFL and everything, it's really turning like this big event for four or five days. What is the most important thing in the combine, in your opinion? And what is something that's like, it's more for show. Like, at this point, it's like, you know, we kind of know how fast these guys are, routes and stuff like that. But what is it the most important for you as a gm looking at a player at the combine?

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, I mean, the, the most important thing is something I'm not even involved with, and that's the medical. Like, we need the medical. It's. It's so important when you're. Especially these guys that you're talking about drafting in these, you know, first few rounds, just the value that you're going to end up paying them. And it's hard to, you know, you can get some really good players, but there's guys that medically, you know, we have first round grades on that we have to either move down or take off our board just because medically where they're at. But beyond that, to me, it's. It's the interview. You know, we get to interview 45 of these guys and then our coaches, you guys probably remember you got all those little informal interviews that you're. You're doing. You probably, probably hate him as a player. It's like speed dating.

[Josh Allen]

The train station.

[Brandon Bean]

The train station. But I think that's the most important. We've watched the tape, we've watched football. I don't. Yes. Do I watch the workouts? Yes. But let's don't overemphasize, you know, in T shirt and shorts, what these guys are doing or not doing. Some. Some guys are truly. Even when we get to the spring, when we're in, you know, helmets and T shirts, you know, you.

[Josh Allen]

You.

[Brandon Bean]

You naturally start saying, oh, this guy looks great. This guy doesn't. This guy's not doing it. But then you put the pads on, you play 11 on 11 football, and some player. Some players rise and some fall. So that, you know, back to your original question. The combine for me is really the medical and the interviews, the workouts are great, but at the end of the day, if. If I didn't have that, it wouldn't. It wouldn't break me.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah. But I feel like with the. With the running and jumping and the benchmark, it's like, check a box. Like, if they hit this time, all right, we're solid. We're solid with all these things.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, we definitely have some things, and they're really indicators of maybe things that you. You've already seen or tape. Sometimes guys will, you know, you'll go, man, this guy ran a 4, 3, 9. You're watching on tape, you're like, man, I. I didn't even know if this guy could run four or five. You know, there's. There's track speed and there's play speed, and then there's guys that surprise you. They. They. Their play speed looks like it's low four fours, but they're not great testers. They didn't train very well, and they run, you know, 4, 5, 0, and, you know, I actually like it when they do that. Gives me. Sometimes I feel like I get an easier chance to get them because their time's not.

[Josh Allen]

So he's over. Evaluating that.

[Will Compton]

You got to like a good bench press, though.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah. Honestly, especially position specific. Like, you know, guys that really are going to be anchoring down, doing it. Like, am I worried about a receiver's bench press?

[Josh Allen]

Not.

[Brandon Bean]

Not really, but, you know, O line, D line, linebackers, guys like that, I definitely think it matters.

[Josh Allen]

What's your number on the bench press? You're like, all right, offensive lineman.

[Taylor Lewan]

Yeah.

[Brandon Bean]

I mean, I would hope you're, you know, in the 20s if, if. If you're not, you love it if you're in the 30s. But if, you know, if you got an offensive line that he does, like, 17, that's a little bit of red flag. Like, is he that weak? Has he not been training? Like, what's he.

[Will Compton]

Maybe his arms are too long.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah.

Maybe he went to Stanford.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Pulling from your example that you were using with Guti with the spot he was in where he was getting attacked but he had a plan in place. Was there ever a situation that jogs your memory where you felt like you were being attacked and you just knew this was going to be the right situation for Buffalo's future.

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, I think there's a couple times, I mean, Josh was. When he came out, he was a polarizing subject. I mean, exactly some of the things you said. He was a junior college guy, went to Wyoming, had. And, you know, he made a lot of thrilling plays, but he had a lot of turnovers. And, you know, people were questioning his accuracy and they were comparing him to other quarterbacks that had failed come out and failed, that were big, strong, athletic arms that. That didn't work out. I would say, you know, when we took him, there were guys like Josh Rosen, Lamar, some other guys that were still available. And, you know, I specifically remember people saying you took the wrong Josh, you know, taking Josh Allen, you know, versus Rosen. So, you know, that was definitely one. I think even what I was talking about earlier last year, going through a transition year, you know, moving on from, like I said, five or six of our captains, guys that had been there. There was definitely some question, you know, even. And then Stefan Diggs, you know, being kind of one of the last pieces of that, that we moved on. Well, hey, you don't have a number one receiver. You've lost all these guys. You're putting too much on Josh's plate. Like, who's going to make the plays on third down? Who's your red zone? You know, kind of target. Gabe Davis had, had left for free agency as well. So it was definitely a year of transition with some of our captains last year. And, you know, fortunately, you know, we didn't win the trophy, but it worked out. We had, you know, we won the division and made a run to the championship game. Unfortunately, came up, you know, a few points short.

[Will Compton]

Yeah.

[Josh Allen]

With every player in the NFL, if you could take one guy from any team and put him on the Buffalo Bills, who would that one guy be?

[Brandon Bean]

First off the bus type of guy. You. Bob Spence, dude, I feel like he's one of the more underrated tackles in the entire NFL. He. His body of work is great. He's like, you Correct me if I'm wrong, but he seems like a guy that gonna be quiet, not gonna get a whole lot of penalties. He's gonna do his job day in and day out, which is exactly what you want from a tackle. But he doesn't get, like, the national recognition that, like, Dion Dawkins more does. I think Dion's fantastic, too. I'm not taking anything away from him. Him. But speak about Spence a little bit, because I feel like he really. I think he fell out of the first round, right?

[Brandon Bean]

Yeah, we got him in the third. We got him in the third.

[Josh Allen]

Yeah. Okay. Got went to the third, and he's just been. Yeah, it seems like lights out.

Played in Northern Iowa. I think we got lucky. It was a Covid year. And so he. Their season was canceled. He went out and worked with Joe Staley kind of that whole year, and so we were able to see some of the film from that. It's. It's a projection business, as you said. But, you know, Northern Iowa, you tried to go to the games that.

[Josh Allen]

That.

[Brandon Bean]

That he was playing against, you know, Iowa. Iowa State. Some of you know, you. Those schools are going to play a couple of big opponents like that a year. How do they fare against those, you know, those power five schools? And then so he gets here and we start him kind of as a backup and then rotating him in, he was. He had a little. A back deal that he had to work through. But I tell you, the last couple years, he has really turned it on and made it a no brainer for us to extend. And there's not a lot of teams that pay two tackles. You know, it's. It's not always the easiest thing to do. Obviously, Deion's been a staple here, you know, since 2017, but we just felt it was, it was, you know, Spencer was really still an ascending player. And you're right.

[Taylor Lewan]

He's quiet, he loves to get out there, and he probably does more talking on the field than he does off the field. He's just kind of a lunch pail guy. You're kind of guy. And I'm excited where he's at.

[Josh Allen]

He had to start camp on. On Puppy. He. He had a little deal in the summer that set him back with his back, but he's. He's back out there today. Today was his first full practice and he came up to me say he's gonna be a little sore, but he's excited to be out there.

Well, bringing in new pieces, guy like Josh Palmer, a guy like Elijah Moore. Getting them just associated with what we're doing, how we're doing it. The everybody eats mindset. Trying to get on the same page with them. But again, like looking at film from last year, like, there's still so many things, like easy stuff that I missed, like whether it was with my eyes or with my feet. I missed Dalton Kincaid, like on three or four touchdowns last year that should have been walk ins. So there's a lot of room for growth. Just continuing to trust what Joe's calling and making sure that he understands what I like, what I don't like. And then again, if he does call something I don't like, instead of trying to force something to make it happen, just. Just find the back and move on, you know?

Yeah. We were talking to Howie, the GM for Philly yesterday, and we were talking about like the noise, how people always talk about how the players have ignored the noise and how he ignores the noise. And he was saying that he honestly just doesn't look at it. Doesn't look at Twitter, the comments, anything. It's a very difficult thing to do. How do you kind of compartmentalize and ignore the noise? Especially with the person you're married to, the outside, everyone's wondering what you're doing. You've become this a list celebrity. Similar thing. I stay off social media so I don't really see it. I try to again, always remind myself that I'm just a human being. I'm normal, very good at what I do. And that's what kind of people want to see. And yeah, staying off. I haven't, I haven't checked Twitter. Twitter is a crazy place.
