Hello beautiful people and welcome to our humble abode, the DraftKings Thunderdome on this feel good football Friday Juneteenth. This sports program begins now. Sports are the absolute greatest and we're seeing the entire country come together and rally around a soccer team that is battling for the world's title of the World cup champion. Now, Team USA obviously kicked it off in a big way against Paraguay and LA. And now in Seattle today, 3 o' clock Eastern, we will take home the Socceroos from down under as the boys who'll be donning the stripes and the stars will be trying to prove that the game against Paraguay was not an anomaly. That was not a one off. What that was, was an indicator of where soccer is in the United States of America, which is at an elite level, which might win the whole damn thing. Now Australia, there are some people saying they were ass. Michael Grella, friend of the program, friend of ours, obviously for a very long time, will be joining us here in about 15, 20 minutes. He has come out very publicly and said Australia's shite. Basically, Australia has responded to Grella, which has kind of lifted the sense of tension for this particular game. But the boys on the pitch understand that their first games, Australia against Turkey and us against Paraguay, was something that not a lot of people expected. And who knows what can happen. What we're hoping happens, USA wins by 10 easy. We hope this is 10. Nothing is that likely. We have no idea. Soccer's been crazy. Canada scored six yesterday. Canada scored six goals yesterday. And then you go to the Mexico Korea game and there's only one goal scored and it was kind of because of a goalie match mistake. You have no idea if the score is going to go high. You have no idea if there's going to be no score. You have no idea if it's going to be a draw. But what you do know is that this World cup has been delivering. It's right there off the coast of Senegal. Right off of Senegal down there. Beautiful. It looks like it appears to be an absolutely beautiful place. Also, they got a soccer team that's competing for the World cup and all of a sudden we're starting to see the world come together a little bit. So today, as USA takes on Australia and Seattle, we will be celebrating the hell out of SP as a whole, maybe making the world a much better place. And act like we can win the whole thing, knowing full well that we just don't have the quality on our side to go out and do it. It's different this year. It really does. And, and now I'm just praying, I'm praying that with all this momentum, all this juice behind us, the boys go out, the lads go out, and they beat the hell out of Australia because we're at a fever pitch right now. If they go out and they win big today, like it is, it's. It's not coming home, it's staying home. And I, I very, I truly Believe that this is the most excited I've ever been for a soccer game in my life. Maybe will be the most excited I will ever be for a soccer game.

Me and Tone knew this. But it is as of the last couple years really where other, not us, but other people are starting to learn of the significance of June 19 as a day in America's history. And we, we pointed out something special on St. Patrick's Day, actually. So if we could go and take a trip back in time to St. Patrick's Day, we'd like to illustrate how we led to today's celebration of a great day in America's history. By the way, obviously not everything has ever been perfect but Juneteenth the holiday. I think that a lot of you, not me in town because where we grew up, we learned about this.

Everybody in here was wearing black at the beginning. I think there was an attempt obviously made to celebrate the hell out of June 19th. And Juneteenth here your thoughts on the magical kind of unveiling of this story kind of being introduced to the United States of America over the last few years. I think it has been a good thing and also I think it's a beautiful thing that we have a team USA game riding on the same exact day as all of this.

Steve? Yeah, unlike you and Tone, I wasn't really aware of Juneteenth even as a kid growing up. Obviously you knew the history in this country. We knew about the Emancipation Proclamation which took place on the first in 1863, January 1st. Abraham Lincoln gave that. But it wasn't until two years later, until 1865, where the last enslaved people in Texas, over 250,000 people, were actually free once the general rolled up there and kind of, you know, let them know, hey, this is what's going on here. So now we celebrate and we know and we're aware and a lot of people know. July 4, 1776, for black people, for descendants of slaves, we weren't free. So this is our independence day, essentially. So Juneteenth is very, very important. I'm glad it's come more to the light. As of late. It's now a federal holiday. Back in June 2021, believe federal holiday 1979, Texas was the first state to make it a state holiday. So it's awesome. It's awesome that you learn about it. Obviously we're not still in that place. We've come a long way but it's important to know the history, the history of people around you. And look, we have like a locker room, like a family vibe here. So I wouldn't suggest just all white people just go to, hey, happy Juneteenth.

holiday depending on your relationships with your people around you. You know, just navigate that wisely. But that was the first thing said to me this morning upon arrival. Popping the trunk, going through my shit, making sure I got all my shit. Hey, happy jt. So, yeah, so I made sure I shot that back. But, yeah, it's a dope day, obviously, to celebrate. And going forward, like you said, it is, you know, the 250th celebration of the country, and we got the World Cup. So you know what sports, it does shit. That's how me and you got together. We've known each other for over, you know, 12, 13 years at this point. So it's awesome day. And I'm glad that people are more educated, you know, thought about shit. Calling off today. Why the fuck am I working?

I said, use the platform to educate, inform, and obviously celebrate. But, yeah, today, today's a great day and a great celebration for Americans, especially black Americans and slaves.

As somebody who. And this is a hilarious thing to say, and anytime a caucasoid says it, it is classic. But as somebody who has actually has black friends, I would like to say I'm very thankful for kind of sport bringing everybody together. Whatever brings everybody together. And also I appreciate the fact that we're getting another day to celebrate. I mean, black folks make up a huge part of sports. And if we can celebrate the actual day that somebody said, hey, listen, this shit ain't happening anymore. Beautiful thing. I love everything about learning about Juneteenth. And I like what sports is doing here in the United States of America. The World cup clips that just continue to come out from fans experiencing things, and these stadiums being packed with people from so many different religions in so many different countries, obviously, and cultures in socioeconomic. It's just sports are a wonderful thing. So I'm happy it's all being celebrated right now in the middle of summer, and there's a chance the United States are going to win it all. Another incredible sporting event is taking place. The third major of the golf season is taking at Shinnecock. Long Island, Hamptons, New York.

Okay, so tell me about Wyndham Clark. Everybody's pissed off that he didn't have to play with the wind. Like he was the one that scheduled the wind and his tee time. But obviously there was others that were playing at relatively same time as him. He was taking advantage of the situation. What is the conversation around Windham Clark and then is he going to have to face any of the super stiff wind that maybe the earlier rounds yesterday had to face?

The wind started to pick up, but he's on holes 15 right now. I mean, this is a guy that went from smashing lockers at Oakmont to potentially smashing records here at Shinnecock this week. The largest 36 hole lead in the US Open history, Pat, is six by Tiger back in 2000 at Pebble beach and Rory did it in 2011 at Congressional. But you know, he's a guy that wanted US Open. Back at LA Country Club a few years ago, he really struggled for more than a year with a, with a, a double miss off the tee, but won the Byron Nelson a couple of weeks ago to CJ cup at the Byron Nelson. Finished well at the Memorial. He's got a ton of talent. Obviously he's had a temper problem over the years. I've talked to him about it, did a couple big stories about controlling his anger. He's got a really good mental coach that's helping him now. Dude's ultra talented. He's got a couple of huge breaks on 13. He drove it left into the native area, knocked it on the green, made birdie, next hole, hits it right, gets a good lie. He's catching a lot of breaks early.

Okay, so I like that maybe Shinnecock is picking him to maybe win this year. Wide wire so he can move on past the Oakmont situation last year. You obviously wrote about it a couple times. Tone Diggs here. Mark, I don't know if you know this, he was actually a caddy for one summer at Oakmont and he felt obligated the other day when Wyndham joined us just a few Days before a major. Thank you to him for joining us. Tone goes. Hey, asshole. I caddied at Oakmont. I don't like what you did to our locker room. And Wyndham was like, basically saying that he hopes this year he's able to play well enough that all of that is behind him. He's seemingly doing as such. Is there a Windham Clark? Is he a little bit of a polarizing figure in golf in general? Is that a good way to talk about it? Because he was cool to us and I think he acknowledged a little bit that he might not be loved by everybody. A couple different times in the convo.

He's a polarizing guy. You know, he's always been good to me. I've had a couple one on ones with him. You know, backstory. Mom died. I think she was kind of the filter between him and his father. He was a little hands on when he was growing up in terms of the golf and he had to learn how to filter that anger. And the Julie, I can't remember last name is swing coach. Middle coach has helped him, but with what happened at Oakmont and he destroyed a sign, I think, in Charlotte last year. He's a polarizing guy, but no question he's got a lot of talent.

It's amazing what winning a couple tournaments can do, though, for being polarizing and being destructive as opposed to being passionate and obviously intense. It's all in how it ends up working out for you. How about Neiman getting a two stroke penalty? Allegedly here you would know better than us. But no cameras caught it, I guess. Joaquin Neiman of live, live golf fame, he was assessed a two stroke penalty for Potton. Is that what I didn't know that happens because I've seen a lot of golfers get pissed. That seemingly is going to be a story or not a story at all over there.

It's a story. It happened. It actually happened Thursday night right as he was trying to finish a hole. Number six on the, on the, on the. In the first round, he hit two drives out of bounds, had to go back to the tee, and then he rips one to the left in the native area. He wanted relief from fire ants. I did not know the fire ants were so deadly up here in Long Island. But he asked for relief. He didn't get it through his club, kicked a little white flag that the volunteer had placed to locate his ball. It ends up making a nine. And then when he teed off in the second round this morning, USGA announced that he'd been penalized two strokes for, we'll call it, conduct unbecoming of a professional golfer. To his credit, he ended up making. I think he shot 78 in the first round. He made a couple early birdies, but I think he's about six over right now. I hadn't looked in the last few minutes, but that's. It could end up costing him.

The video y' all are showing yesterday, struggling with the grip. I, I said he's. He's got to get the, the irons dialed in a little bit, but he hasn't done it. Swing seems to be a little steep according to the guys who know more about swings than I do. And he got into it a little bit with Randy Smith. But a lot of golf left still make a run. I went with Henley for low dog of the week. Turns out it's going to be the left hander, Brian Harmon who won the Open a couple years ago. He's in the best position. I didn't pick him this week because I called him last Monday and he was on his fishing boat trying to catch starboard. Didn't know where the mind was.

It was like 12:1, I think, at one point. Once again, West Virginia never stops. Like, the UNC team. I don't know. I don't know anything about college baseball, actually. That is noted. All I know is what I saw this year. That UNC team, they look the part, you know, like getting off the bus, like that. That was a team getting off the bus. It's like, yeah, that. That's a professional baseball outfit right there. West Virginia boys, we got studs, obviously, all over the place, and I can't wait to see what Steve Sabins does with the team. But it's like, I think Oklahoma teams the same, right? And aren't they kind of.

They did what they had to do yesterday in terms of probably the easiest setup they could have out here just because, you know, the wind forecast. They did not anticipate the fog in the morning, and that made the greens pretty soft, but doing a little more aggressive today. The winds picked up, but it's not supposed to be nearly as bad as it was yesterday. Guys, number 11, the par three that Ludwig Oberg called the shortest par five in the history of golf. It's playing 156, and I think there's been four birdies on it, but watch DJT off, and his tee shot was like 25 yards short into a bunker. So like I said, a lot left to play. You guys left off William Mao, who's tied for 14th at 2 under. He is the son of a chicken farmer in Chino, California, Billy's Egg Farm. He was up tied for second, but finally cracked in his second major championship.

But now you talk to people around the PGA Tour, you know, he's the most polarizing, probably, in terms of whether or not they're going to let him come back. I think there's definitely going to be a big penalty there. I was told there are guys in the PGA Tour locker room that have memorized everything negative he said about the PGA Tour over the last four or five years. So there's obviously a ton of scar tissue when it comes to Bryson. He's a huge name, soft. He's massively popular among the kids, but he may be making YouTube videos for a while before he can come back on the PGA Tour.

So after what you have seen, and they had America at 17, which is, I think where we were ranked originally. I think it was a lot of people that didn't want to feel as if they were disrespecting the sport and they didn't want to lose their friends respect in the soccer world, saying that they liked America and appear as if they were didn't know ball, didn't know footie, you know. Cause like we as dumb Americans say, the United States of America soccer team's gonna win it all. Obviously, if you know footy, this is not like reality. So I think they just misread the situation. Cuz I think people that are actually in soccer now, yourself included, are like, hey, actually America looks like a good team. And I think these people that took this vote thought that maybe, you know, we were still maybe just overdoing it a little bit, you know. It does feel as though if a lot of American soccer people, super soccer people, are the ones that are pushing back against us, saying we're winning the World cup the most because they don't want to be embarrassed as footy fans. And I would just like to let everybody know we're winning a fucking World Cup.

Thank you. How early on will you feel maybe like. Or get a good feel of how the game is going to go when it comes to this game today against Australia?

I, I think. I'm pretty sure I already know how the game's going to go. Australia is going to play in a 5, 4, 1. They're going to be pretty defensive. They're going to sit in and if they expose themselves, they'll get killed with the pace that we have in the team. So they're going to sit in, we're going to press, press them just like we did to Paraguay. We're going to win, pressure, press the balls after loss. So we're going to be all over them now. Australia will be deeper and more compact. So it's going to. There's going to be an element of patience that that's required. So it's going to look very similar to Paraguay. But it might take time to get the first goal. If we score first, bring it to the bank. Bring the three points to the bank. If we score first, if Australia score first, which is what happened against Turkey, then it becomes a much trickier game because Australia will sit in and they'll make it really difficult. I mean, like I said the other day, Australia had 28 possession of the ball and they only took nine shots. So they were not very good. But they found a way to win the game. I think the US has to make sure that they're careful on the, on the counter defensive transition. But, like, if they score first, it's going to be. It's going to be party time.

Okay, well, America continue to attack if we score first because it does feel as if we have the strategy where we might give one up. Like, will that make Australia kind of break their defensive formation to kind of try to get a couple more opportunities against us? It feels like we're not as scared to maybe give up a goal, but I've heard Australia locks it down. So, like, do you think we changed the. The pace in which we were playing from last game or do you think we try to do the same stuff against Australia? Because I think Pataguay was also a super defensive team in before face USA as well. Is it going to bode well for us the same way there?

Matt, you're on the money. You're 100% on the money. It's going to matter. The timing of the. Of the first goal, I think it's going to be important. But I think. I think the second thing is the US have conceded easy goals, so they're going to go for it. They're going to step on the gas. They're going to play full throttle. 90 minutes. That's what my expectations are. At least. The last goal the U.S. scored against Paraguay, actually Giorena with the outside of the foot, the little Travella. That was a 26 pass sequence where the US were very smart. They said, no problem, we're winning. You guys come to us. Expose yourself. So if the US Are winning by two or one and it's very late and they kind of just invite Australia into the game, that's when Australia will be disjointed and they'll able to pick them apart, you know, with hopefully a 20 pass sequence or a 15 pass sequence and then go and finish them off. So game management's important, but the athleticism jumped off the page in the first game. I expect to see it today. I'm excited for the game. I hope they win. They have the quality to win. But again, you got to go and make that layup.

It's also been celebrated the Bayern Munich PSG game where they scored, I don't know, nine goals in one game or whatever. Like that's been like the way to push it. Now if I'm getting into a fight with a six foot six ex professional boxer, right, I'm not going to fight him straight up, right? I might run, I might pick up a weapon, I might, I have to find a way to compete against this guy. And that's basically what Australia is going to do. Australia is going to sit in a casual. They can't play toe to toe because you just can't because you don't have the tools to do it. So they're going to make it difficult and they're going to make it slow and they're going to want to keep a draw. And so we'll see how the US deal with that because we know we have all tools, but can we manage those moments to understand what they're doing and not expose ourselves like Turkey did? Turkey didn't have enough respect and then they, you know, they lost two nil. So they got surprised.

But it felt like everybody was in some sort of costume. Everybody was in shape. The food was spectacular, the people obviously love sport and the fact that they're able to beat Turkey in their first game I think was a big surprise to a lot of people. But if Team USA just goes ahead and gets a massive win in Seattle, it's going to be loud. By the way, it'll be loud in Seattle. We know the Pacific Northwest soccer fans are gigantic because the Portland Timbers and the boys up there, up there, they have big fan base and obviously a lot of Team USA fans are up there and that stadium is built to be loud. So let's assume that this is going to be an incredible atmosphere. The boys are going to be ready for it. Will that man be playing Christian pulisic? We're not 100% sure. There's been no confirmation. Sky Sport out of Italy is reporting that he is fully available and obviously he played in Italy, so there are some connections to that particular media outlet. So maybe Christian Pulisic is playing today and maybe we see the same starting 11 that we saw against Pataguay and if that's the case, we get a chance maybe to see another master class but also that starting 11 get a chance to continue to play with each other. Chris Richards, we had him on this man right over there, 83 for 83 in his passes and defensive back. He said that was the first time these 11 guys were on the field together playing against somebody. That was really the first time they were really getting a chance to do that.

That feels like something that was big this week. As we continue to get to that, I think the missing miss weekends. Not that there is any Miss Weekends. The NFL has Some miss weekends. So it's not easy to project, predict, especially with injuries potentially coming. But I think that is in the future of college sports as well. College football definitely where there's going to be like, we'll give this this weekend, we'll do this this weekend, we'll do that. So we know every single week we have something gigantic.

I, I've always hadn't been able to seen like in like junior high. I remember being like this literally all the time and somebody was like, you, hey, use glasses. So get glasses, do the contacts. I left my contacts in here at a time, just years, just years at a time. Just didn't even think about it. Then we played against I think the St. Louis Rams and right one fell out like third quarter. There's no backup contacts cuz I don't have backup contacts cuz I've had these in since two years ago. So I don't, I don't even know what these are. So I had to go through a game watching in stereo. Basically I can't see anything and I'm holding for like. Yeah, yeah, it was, it was, it was a bad thing. So I was like, I gotta get this straight out. But since I wore contacts for so long, obviously my eyes were so swollen. So like I had to do high pressure. I had to do like a six month stint with glasses on. So I had a six month stint with glasses where I was just showing up everywhere with these brand new glasses. Nobody had a clue what to do. And then it's finally Lasik day. And you go in there and it's for the end of the day, I think I got it like 3:34 o'. Clock. And the way you do it is you walk in, they tape your open, okay, Tape your right eye open and you're just like sitting there. And then they have this big laser thing like you're at a dentist and that thing comes down on your eye and then all of a sudden it just starts and they're like, let us know when you see the orange blinking light or whatever. And then you start smelling your eye. And then you lose your vision completely in your right eye. Lose your vision completely. Hey, let us know when you see the orange blinking light. They ask that two times. Once they get to the third time asking that fourth time asking, you think you're blind forever. You think, you think you're never seeing anything at all. And then all of a sudden that orange light comes back and you're like, yes, okay, I'm not blind. And then. Oh yeah, we gotta do the next eye. Okay, then. Then you take two Ambien, then you put sunglasses on and you wake up the next morning and you can read that thing. It is. I had like 2010 video. It was a whole new world. I saw this. I saw the roof of the coats indoors complex for the first time because all the lights on the roof were just like a big blur.

Let's start talking a little bit about the NFL in the meat of the off season here. Tell me a little bit about what we should think about this week in the NFL. What was the big story in your eyes and maybe what's something we should look forward to.

So, you know, usually this is the time where players go away, they get on vacation, minicamps ended. And so, you know, I'd say mostly you have, have any contract negotiations, have sort of hit a pause, unless you get to the point where you're like, let's just keep talking because we're going to get this done. So you'll probably see, you know, a couple contract negotiations, some high profile guys like, you know, Bijan and Jameer Gibbs and kind of those type of guys. Baker, you know, if they're going to get done around the start of camp, I think a lot of times is a pretty good landing spot for that. Otherwise, you know, the guys are going to go away and you hope to not have any NFL news. The reason why this is maybe a little different is because of the Brendan Sorsby situation. I know Thamil's covered this a lot, but like, you have a legitimate high profile NFL issue in the middle of June in a place where there never is anything like this.

Your thoughts on Roger Goodell being the one having to decide Whether or not there's a supplemental draft. And how quickly will that come after the application window closes on Monday for the supplemental draft?

Ian Rapoport
Yeah, I would expect news probably pretty quickly. So, you know, you hope early next week, Tuesday, maybe something like that, just to have some finality and say, like, is there going to be a supplemental draft or not? If there is, you know, then Shoresby is going to be the most high profile supplemental draft prospect since, God, I don't even know. Three decades, something like that. I mean, Josh Gordon was probably the most notable, but this is even more high profile than that. And so, I mean, it's Goodell deciding, it's the NFL's management council deciding. And there's, you know, there's a lot that goes into it because he's incredibly talented. I talked to seven general managers to gain an understanding of where the talent is. They believe universally first round talent, talent may not get a first round pick, but first round talent. And you're probably looking at second or maybe even third round supplemental pick if he is eligible to even be in it. Like if they're even going to have one. And we'll find that out next week.

Classic us on that note, Sbe is going to get a first round bid from somebody, is what it sounds like. Because you're saying. Everybody's saying maybe not a first round. So if somebody actually wants them, they're going to put a first rounder in because they think nobody else will.

And the night goes off without a hitch. Perfect evening for freedom. 250. A bunch of knockouts. And in the end, the American underdog made the Foreign fighter quit for a championship. And I think Freedom250 was certainly a success. I think there was a lot of greatness. The G7, which is the global. Seven countries, whatever, coming together to meet. Obviously, very important time in our world's kind of history that's taking place right now. They were talking about the fighting, common ground, beautiful thing.

But then, you know, I mean, we obviously, when you're from a different country and you come over here, like, you'll go to New York, you'll go to la, you'll go to Vegas, you've taught, like, the big tourist ones. There's one guy in particular. Let me make sure. Okay, I. I can't see that. Tomo LUFC 1992 underscore V2. This British lad, him and his wife took a camper. I don't know where they came. You know, they're going to Chicago, I believe, or they were coming from Chicago. He drove through Iowa and boy, he, he, he, he found out what Casey's Breakfast pizza is all about. Casey's.

They have everything here. Holy. We could choose whatever drink we want. It's here, it's available. And then obviously the serving sizes and the extras.

But they are kind of just considering all of their cities to be Boston's twin city. It feels as though it is more of a country of Scotland with the country of Massachusetts, Boston, Moore in particular. I believe they also just created a hey, guess what? Open container law, we're doing it. You don't have one anymore. You can just walk around with a beer. Honestly, one of my favorite parts about Indiana is that there's no open container law. They're bringing that back.

So obviously Scotland fell in love with Boston. But I was intrigued to see whenever Scotland has to go somewhere else, what they're going to do. Turns out they're going to go to other places and judge it against Boston the way they had the time of their life.

And it does kind of remind you, like, oh, yeah, Boston is the greatest fucking city in the world.

Obviously Baligun for us. We got Erling Holland, we got dictator Mbappe doing his thing. And then the goat who you guys had on a slip and got helped you get the crown, went off with the hat trick. Obviously Miami American himself, Messi showing up as well. So I love that the stars showed up. I hope they continue to show up. We'll see if Ronaldo can join that train. Maybe some other guys, but that has been my favorite thing of the week so far.

Yeah, just literally all the stars except for Cristiano Ronaldo. So we assume he'll come exploding on the scene at some point in his sixth World Cup. Messi hats, a hat trick, unbelievable stuff. We were talking about this off air because it's kind of, it was kind of my take about Messi, about how much he's done for soccer in the United States of America. It's like just in general when you talk about athletes, the Hype always living up to what it is with him is outrageous. First game he was playing for Inter Miami, they just gave him a percentage of the league. I think they gave him a percentage of the Apple subscriptions to watch the mls. It's like a historic daily turn down a billion from Saudi to come do this. This is going to be a massive investment from Apple. MLS team, Inter Miami team was ass. They were out of the playoffs completely. Maybe worst team in the entire league. His first game playing there, we all watched. Everybody's like, hey, the greatest player on earth is coming to play. First time he touched the ball was like a free kick. He scored. It was like, it was like immediately everybody is there to watch him. He is expected to do something every time he has the ball. And he does seemingly like every time he is supposed to do something, he does. And it's, it's outrageous. I mean, you're talking about one of the most consistently great athletes just of all time. I don't know how he does it. Honestly, Gumpy, I do not fully comprehend it. You know soccer and have followed soccer a lot closer than obviously us. As a big time fan, I know Messi and Ronaldo have been around forever. And Ronaldo, obviously historically great soccer player. I'm not saying that, but Messi just every time lives up to the, the expectation. It's outrageous. Why, why is he like this? Is he just a robot? Like, what. How do we, how do we get to this point where he's still this great all the time?

He's always been like this from like a young age. But they always held it over his head that he never won the World cup with Argentina. Like, that was the one thing. And you saw him, he retired from Argentina multiple times. He missed a massive penalty shot in a Copa America game. But since he's won the World cup, you can watch how free he's playing. And he's really enjoying everything. And every game he just steps up like he did the other night. And it's just expected. And we're never going to see anything like this again, again. And I don't think there's a discussion anymore of who's the greatest of all time, because he proves it on every, every stage. Every time he takes the pitch, it really is.
