London. My favorite. Yeah. Shout Out. So do you guys spend a lot of time in New York City? Or is this just like. You're getting used to it, the press. The show is coming out. Big week in New York.

Yeah, I was born in New York and I have been telling everybody and it's like my. Yeah. One fun fact, but it's like incredibly boring. But no, I love. I love New York. And like, I never had. I haven't really been since I was a kid, so this has been so fun. And like. Yeah, the Empire State Building was sick. Like, that was so cool to. And yeah, I was so excited.

So you were born in New York?

[Ella Bright]

Yes.

And then how quickly did you go to London?

[Ella Bright]

I was moving back and forth between London, New York, Amsterdam, all the things, until I was six. And then. Yeah, when I was seven, we like, settled in New York. Sorry. In London. And my two younger sisters were born in London, so they're even more British than I am. But yeah, my parents have like, very American accents and our whole family lives in the States, so it's very random that we.

Everyone in your family sounds kind of different.

[Ella Bright]

Yeah, everyone sounds very different. Yeah. Like really, really pos. Like sisters. My accent kind of goes back and forth and then. Yeah. I've got an Oklahoman dad and a California mom. So very.

And then, you know, it's funny cause we're both Italian as well, and so it's like. I was actually just talking about this with my mother in law that that generation came. They changed all the names.

And now I feel like our generation wants to go back to the Italian. They're like, no, no, no. This is the name.

It is. Because my grandpa who came from Italy was Giacchino, but then changed to Gino.

Cause they cut out all. But you're like, no, that sounds.

Yeah, see, but they came. The way it's described to me is like, they came to America to be Americans and to take full opportunity or advantage of the opportunity. So, like, do you Guys speak Italian?

No.

Like, is your family, like, teaching you Italian at home?

My mom speaks Italian, but never taught

us, but same kind of thing. My. My grandparents did not because their parents were like, no, that was part of it.

It was like, you guys will speak English, right?

So I don't speak a lick of it.

And we think so. I mean, this is one of those shows that you gotta binge it, have to all at once fly through it. How much pressure have you guys felt now with this show coming out because it has such a beloved fan base already?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Honestly, not a ton. Like, it's nice to be on a show, like, as an actor to. In television, to be on a show that already has this much support before it's even dropped is. Is just, like, so special. Like, that's a real privilege. I think only now doing press for it are we really realizing how many people love these books. You know, like, we, like, got, like, we kind of checked the temperature when we got the job and realized that, you know, a lot of people like them, but now it's kind of a whole nother animal. But, you know, like, when we were shooting it, I didn't feel any particular pressure from the fandom or anything.

Yeah, we.

We just approach it like, you know, any job.

And how long have you guys had since you, like, wrapped to now?

[Ella Bright]

We. Yeah, we wrapped. Yeah.

October.

We finish October. Yeah. And then we. Yeah, we go back for season two.

It is so Good. And you guys should be so proud of yourself. I loved it. Can you guys take us through the process of how you got your roles individually? Because I feel like, you know, there's always, like, fan casting online, right, for books or that have such a big fan behind them already. And so to hear the story behind you getting involved is always so fascinating to everybody.

[Ella Bright]

Yeah, I. I had never heard of the books before, but I'd heard of, like, Icebreaker Ice Hockey. Like, that was the only ice hockey romance.

[Rhiann Fran]

You're aware that there's a hockey romance genre?

[Ella Bright]

Exactly. I was like, okay, I think I know what this is. But at the time I was like, in the uk, we have these things called A levels and these, like, these big exams that you have to, like, really lock in for. So I was like, I don't need to. I like Harvey auditioning at the moment. So I say, I'm going to do one more and that's it. And of course, the one was off campus. And then, yeah, I had a first self tape and then I had a couple zooms and then, yeah, they gave me, like, my plane ticket to LA. And in less than 24 hours, we were just doing this chemistry read with 28 different actors. Everyone was up for Ally, Hannah, Dean, Logan, Tucker, Garrett, like, Justin. Every character was there and we were kind of like pairing up different people and groups. And yeah, I met Belle there. I met pretty much everybody. And it was really, really intense, but a really fun, exciting day. Like, the energy was just really. You could really feel it. And there was a lot of heart being put into the show and a lot of care to who was gonna play it. And then, yeah, I had two more zooms after and then they, yeah, told me and I was just like, in bits. I still can't really believe it. It's crazy.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, my. So I had been taping for our casting team for different stuff just kind of over the years, and I'd gotten really close to some stuff, so they were familiar with me and they kind of gave our showrunners my endorsement. So I met with Gina and Louisa, our creator and showrunner, and we talked on. We zoomed for like a couple hours about, you know, like, Garrett and the story, and they kind of, like, got me up to speed and, like, pitched me. And so then I went in on the chemistry read day, like the last day, and, like, put myself on tape, like, gave them my audition and, yeah, met everybody. It was. It was a crazy day. Like, a lot of times you go to chemistry reads, like, I've done them before where at the most, it's like, I've done them where there's, like 12 guys going out for one part that's like the extreme version of it. But usually it's like, you know, a handful of guys. They're all, like, six foot and, like, white and have brown curly hair. And it's like, all right, this is like. This could be any one of us.

Yeah, yeah. There's Spider Man. We're, like, all looking at each other.

[Ella Bright]

You're like, completely.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, but this was like. Yeah, it was like close to 30 actors, and it was an insane day. And then. Yeah, I found out a couple days later, and, yeah, then I went to work. I had to learn how to skate right after that.

[Rhiann Fran]

Right.

Were there any other characters that you guys were potentially up for? Cause I know a lot of times people go into a TV show and they're like, hey, I went in initially auditioning for this character, but they said, let's try this. Or were you both for Garrett and Hannah?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

I think we were. Both Just went out for the ones we got. There were a lot of people on that day who were reading for multiple parts.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah, I think.

[Ella Bright]

Yeah, a couple of the guys in our show was auditioning for multiple characters, for sure. Yeah. But, yeah, just for us.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, we were just on.

[Rhiann Fran]

And it works because it's gotta be. That is a tricky dynamic, because it is. You're planning for multiple seasons already. You need to have the chemistry for the whole group work. Cause you need the whole team, you need all the ladies, and then, like, everybody sort of trickles in. When you got the roles, did you read all the books? One of the books. None of the books.

[Ella Bright]

I mean, it's interesting.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah.

[Ella Bright]

Like, that's why it felt so intense. I think it's. It's like we need to cast people that are gonna lead every season to it. So it's like really kind of you're trusting these people to just carry on for potentially four or five years, which would be awesome if we get to do all that. But, yeah, no, in terms of the books, I've read the deal. I read that the first day. I got it in one day. So it was, like, super easy read. And then I have since read two more, I think.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Have you really?

[Ella Bright]

I've read two more. You got greenlit for season two. And I was like, okay, yeah, yeah, I'm very superstitious. I was like, read anything else until then?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, I've only read ours, but we are going to do another season. So there's. There's another book that I gotta catch up.

Exactly.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah, exactly. And I did see a lot of people talking about how we. There is already some mixing of stuff that maybe happens in other books that we get to see in season one. And I love that because it is a good tease and you already develop. Like, what I loved watching about this first season was seeing Hannah and Garrett's story, but also you see a lot of the beginnings of completely the others, so you really start to get invested because not to completely jump ahead, but you're left on a bit of a cliffhanger here. So I love that you guys are. Yeah, I love that you guys are like, hey, we're headed back. We're headed back for season two soon. I'm like, that's amazing. Let's. Let's get working. Because they really leave you going. Oh, yeah.

Well, that's kind of honestly what's fun about taking, like, a whole book series. And then, you know, like, our creators and I think Amazon, too, have a pretty, like, lengthy vision for this show. So, like, you know, like, we have to write the first season at least with, like, you know, in mind that we'll do all of them. So there are parts from other books that happen in different seasons. So you can kind of take them holistically and then write them out in seasons and kind of drop little stuff from each. And you'll get the whole story from each book, but not necessarily, like, chronologically by season.

Yeah.

You know what I mean?

Yeah. It's cool that. That is cool. Because even just. Because as of right now, the, you know, the public hasn't seen it yet. And I've just seen the fans seeing, like, still photos of moments, and they're like, holy shit, they put this in the first seat. Like, everyone's already freaking out about it.

Yeah.

So everyone's going to be dissecting it all. And there is a little bit of a different beginning for you two in.

Season one first episode starts off with, you know, a steamier moment, which I liked. Cause I saw Luisa kind of say, like, we wanted to let everybody know that this is gonna be a steamier type of show.

We're setting a precedent. Like, the first 30 seconds.

Yeah. I'm not gonna lie. I was stunned. I was like, I didn't know this show was like this.

Honestly. We watched, we went. We just came back from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

And we played the screen the first episode, and the chairs and the screens. When that came, the screen was, like, unbelievable.

I didn't know it was really funny. No idea how to react to that. It was crazy.

He was just like, yeah, you mean that to me.

that's exactly what I did at the LA premiere. I stood up and I, like, I went like this.

You work. You work hard to have that moment.

Absolutely work hard to have that moment. And really throughout the whole show. Because I think being on Amazon and having these, like, there's a lot of quote unquote teen shows, but, like, everyone is. We crave that summer. I turn pretty like that love. So we love. Like, the fans love that. And I love this because it's college and it's. It's steamy, like it's real life. It's. You feel like you have those moments. There is a locker room moment towards the end of the season that I

almost fell out of my chair.

I almost fell out of my chair. Oh, and everyone's gonna know what I mean after they watch. Okay, but you mentioned you were dressed in Brazil, and Brazil, you know, they get that reputation for the. For the rabid fan base.

What was the reaction you guys got from those crowds?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

I mean, like, can't even talk about. Yeah, I honestly, the show is not out yet.

Yeah.

[Ella Bright]

Like, we felt like the Beatles obviously, was, like, genuinely.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

It was crazy.

[Ella Bright]

It was really emotional as well. Like, we. We all got to do a Q and A up on the stage. And, like, Honestly, the first 10 minutes, we couldn't get one word in without them.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

They're just cheering or chasing.

[Ella Bright]

And then we, like. Yeah, we just got to, like, tell a bunch of people how much we love each other. And it was just, like, really emotional and, like, we were just crying. I was crying so much watching that episode with everybody.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, the pilot. They all watched the pilot. And so we kind of, like, off to the side, like, watching and listening to them watch the pilot. Yeah. And as soon as it ended, like, you and Micah, like, were kind of already in shambles. And then when I saw Jalen break down, I was like, fuck. And then we were all crying. We were all just hugging each other. Crying.

Yeah. Micah and I were pretty much sobbing the whole time. Yeah, I couldn't. It was, like, really.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

I really thought I was gonna keep running around.

That is so special and rewarding. You know, you guys work so hard, and then to see it all come to life and to be able to watch an audience watch you is such a surreal feeling.

It was. Yeah, it was. Yeah. I never thought I'd experience are the coolest people ever. Everyone was so lovely.

That's amazing. And like you said, the fact that the show wasn't even out yet and people are going so nuts over you guys. Just imagine when the show does come out, I mean it's going to be. It's going to be nuts. It is.

We'll be working like we're like the show comes out and then it's kind of a nice dynamic cuz like we're all going back to Vancouver so we'll all be together as people are seeing it and we'll be busy.

Yeah, that'll be really nice because you can have each other to lean on as well because I'm sure you guys know how crazy fandoms can get. So to be able to be with everybody will be great. You mentioned having to, you know, learn ice hockey right away, skating right away, songwriting, singing, both, you know, having to learn a new craft while also your own. What was it like individually for both of you?

[Ella Bright]

It. Yeah, for me it was. I was so grateful for the music team and I had an amazing music teacher called Michael and we, yeah, we were very, we're very stubborn people. We were like, we are not using a hand double and Amazon was being so kind and like offering it to me because like it was, we had really busy days. We had 15 hours, 16 hour days filming and then I would still go home and like call Michael and be like, we have to learn this at like 11pm at night and like sometimes later than that. And yeah, but we did it and we learned all the pieces and it was definitely nerve wracking. I remember the day they found, they told me I got the part was a fake zoom call. They were like, we're just going to talk to you about the music element. And I was like, oh my God, they're going to find out. I can't do any of this. Luckily for me, it was like fake. And they were like, we actually don't have any questions. Would you like to be Hannah? And then I hung up the zoom and I was like, no, I can't.

This is like when you lie on your resume. Exactly.

[Ella Bright]

Oh, but like I, yeah, I'd never been a recording studio before and the original songs, which is so beautiful and I loved singing them and I, yeah, I feel very proud. I was definitely not thinking I could have done it. So I was, I'm very excited about It. And yeah. Love guitar, love piano. Now I'm like, yeah, I really love playing those instruments.

[Rhiann Fran]

They're really great songs.

[Ella Bright]

They're really cool songs. I. Amy Allen, who's incredible. She. Yeah, she wrote the last song in episode eight.

And yeah, she's. She's insane. She writes music for all of my favorite artists. So that was a really surreal moment to get to see my walk for sure.

How were you on the skates to start off?

To start off, fucking terrible.

Yeah.

Like never skated before.

Not even like once?

No, not. Yeah. Not even like as a kid?

No. Not even like, not even for birthday parties or Christmas Day. So like I went to because. So I knew I had a mountain to climb. So like as soon as I got it I went to this like rink in the Valley in la and I was doing like two hour sessions with this coach out there who he was like this like. He's like this old timer, just like classic dude from Ukraine and he was like really funny and he just like had no compassion for the fact that I had no idea what he was doing. It's kind of exactly the dynamic I needed to get started. He put me on like figure skates the first two days. Then he gave me the hockey skates. By Friday I was sore in places I had never even considered were part of my anatomy. And then the next week I was to a place where I could like, you know, I could. Pretty cumbersome, but I could move. I could move around and I could like pizza stop. And then we went to Vancouver and for two or three more weeks then all the guys were there training with our, with Hockey Dave, who's our hockey consultant on the show. Shout out Hockey Dave. Yeah. And by the end of that I could, I could skate pretty fast and I could stop hard. I think I probably still looked a little clunky.

But like I was moving around. My shot was amazing from the get go.

Did you play any other sports growing up?

I played a ton of sports growing up. Yeah. But I don't know, like what about this? Like maybe baseball.

But yeah, for some reason my shot was just like a one from day one.

Yeah. Fall crush or, like, get crushed. Yeah, yeah. And like, I played footballs and, like, I do stunts and, you know, so, like, that was.

in to watch a few of the scenes, like the one on the ice.

They came in on days where we weren't even working.

That's so fun. But that makes a lot of sense. It's like everyone. Not like the grass is greener, but everyone thinks another person. Job is cooler than they.

Performers want to be athletes.

Athletes.

[Rhiann Fran]

Exactly. When it's like when you're. You're like, oh, man, I get to play this sport.

You.

[Rhiann Fran]

By acting. And you really do play this sport. And they think the same thing. That's. That's really cool. And then how much time did you guys have, like, as a team to practice?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

We had. Yeah, like I said, like, two or three weeks of boot camp before we started filming. And then the days where we shoot on the ice are. I mean, every day's long on set, but, like, they're super long. It's. It's. We have to be, like, so dialed in on those days because some of the days we would shoot in, like, cardinal directions, so we would have, like, a big couple scenes and we would just do everything. Shooting to the north. Cause you have to have background to fill out the space. And then we would, like, turn and we would, like go to the east and we would just. You're kind of out of order chronologically, but those days are huge. So there's a lot of downtime between setups. And so we're on the ice all day, actually. Like, you never take your skates off for like 16 hours. It hurts so bad.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah, I was gonna say that's.

At a certain point, you're just nominated blisters.

Yeah, that's tough.

[Ella Bright]

The coolest thing about it is that all the crew is obviously Canadian from Vancouver, and they all grew up skating. So they're all on the ice. Like, we had Albert on the boom, like skating with a huge mic. And like, the cameramen and the camera ops, they were all on skates. It was like. It was honestly, like a spectacle to watch. I loved it when I got to be in the scenes where I just got to sit in the stands. I loved watching it. My first hockey game was the fake one on set.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah. Yeah.

Just repeating the same goal, getting surprised every time.

What was your guys first impression of each other?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

It was. I thought Ella was dope.

Yeah. The. Our casting director, Deanna, came up to me, like, at the beginning of the day. I think maybe you had read some stuff already, but you'd been auditioning, so, like, they'd seen your tapes and stuff. And she came up to me and she was like, this girl, Ella Bright is like, really, really good. Like, we really like her. And I was like, word, you're telling me this, so that must be good news for me.

[Rhiann Fran]

Right?

Right. So I'm in.

So you want me to like her?

And then she was. And I. You know, I had read there were like, a lot of talented people there. But, like, when Ella and I did it, it just kind of felt like, oh, yeah, this is like, you know, hopefully, but probably it. Cause, you know, I mean, it was just like really raw and honest and easy. And then, like, I don't know how much we interacted that day outside of taping together.

[Ella Bright]

I remember, like, honestly, my first ever impression was like, I was in a room and I was freaking out. Like, I have never been that nervous or, like, insecure in my life. In the other day, I was like, I went home being like, well, I didn't get that, obviously.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Like, I can we say too, that like, everybody there. Ella knew from some project, which I

[Ella Bright]

was such a big fan of.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

So I was just like, fans of everybody.

[Ella Bright]

Honestly, like Josh Houston, who's, like, one of my best friends now, I ran away from him on the street because I was like, you're from Heartbreak High. I can't talk to you right now because I'm so stressed. I was like. I was. Yeah, I was freaking out, and I was, like, going into the room for, like, a quiet space, and there was a guy playing Big Thief. And I was like, thank you. This is my space. And Belle was in the corner. He was like, I'm Belle. And I was like, I've never heard someone be called that before. And that's what I thought.

[Rhiann Fran]

That's it.

And then I was like.

[Ella Bright]

And then I saw you later in the chemistry read. And then I. Yeah, honestly, the only thing that was like. Like, the only thread I was hanging onto was he's obviously Garrett, because he was incredible. And I was like, they love him. You can just feel it in the room. Like, he was. It felt. And I was like. And they like us together, so maybe that means I'm into.

It almost feels like you're out of an inside joke that they had.

Exactly.

But I was like, they keep pairing me up with him. So I was like, maybe they like me too. But I was like, there's no way. And I went home and I was like, nah. But I was like, at least I gotta meet all those cool people.

And now I'm friends with all those cool people.

That must be so interesting as an actor, though, to have chemistry reads and know that somebody is good. But you just connect differently with different people, right? Because no one's bad. Everyone's in that room for a reason. But you just have different chemistry with different people.

[Ella Bright]

And you really.

It's weird.

[Ella Bright]

It's like you really feel it. Like, you do feel that energy. Like, I felt that with Mika. I'm like. And with Josh, like, everyone who I read with Antonio, and I felt that way too. I was like, they're the people who were here today. And, like, everyone in there was so talented. But it's like, you really. You felt that kind of family bond immediately from everybody.

And then that's so natural, too. When you go to a chemistry read, like, the whole. The whole time you're trying to figure out, like, what's happening under the surface right now. Like, am I in the running? Am I not? Like, you know, and it sometimes goes your way, sometimes it doesn't. And most times you're wrong. Like, it's hard to know, like, what the people behind the glass are thinking.

Yeah, I know.

It's, like, always Trying to figure it out.

I honestly, it kind of was more just like, I wanna Revise, which was like, crazy. Like, going to school was such a important thing for me, as it should be. And I was just like, I really wanna study.

But then I was like, I want to go uni. And like, yeah. And then obviously I got this and I was like, I just want to, like, take a break, get into my uni, and then just like, maybe pick up acting again after that. But apart from that, I like always. Yeah, either the ones I've gone really close to, I've luckily got in. But apart from that, I've just gone, like, one round of callbacks and it's been kind of like, cut short from there. But, yeah, I've been really lucky where, like, I've gotten the ones that I've gotten really, really close to, then those have been.

And at the time, it was like my first job. No one in my family is in the industry, so no one knew about the continuity rule of, like, you do the first take, and whatever you do on the first take, you have to repeat for many, many takes. And I ate the entire plate of food, and I just kept having to eat anything and it was. It was not fun.

Clarissa has to be sick now. Thanksg and Belle, how about you? You said that you've been in the position before where you've gotten to chemistry reads and it doesn't work out. What has that been like? Would you feel comfortable sharing any that you did?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Sure. Yeah. I've gotten to chemistry reads for different stuff. The way I look at it is, like, for some parts, even just at the first stage, when you tape for something, you're like, I think I can do this, but I Don't think I'm even close to what they're imagining for this. Because it's like when you read a novel and the characters pop up into your head. Like, casting is kind of that way, too. It's like, whoever popped up into the head and, like, I'm like, sometimes or most times, like, I'm just not that guy. I'm like, oh, I can do this. But it's like, it's kind of out of my hands. Like, I don't think I'm the fit for it. Fit's a big part that's completely out of your control. But, yeah, like I mentioned earlier, like, I. I came read for Landman, and, like, Taylor Sheridan, like, flew in, like, 12 guys from, like, around the world to Scottsdale, Arizona, and we were all there, and we were all very different. Like, it was, like, 12 completely different kinds of guys. And Jacob, who ended up getting it, I thought was the right choice. I was sitting there, and I was like, this guy's from Arkansas, and he looks like Billy Bob Thornton's son. And, like, he's gonna be great in this. I was like, yeah, but, like, happy to take a little trip down.

You're, like, joining the trip, being like, you know what?

[Ella Bright]

Good. Yeah.

I was like, this guy's incredible.

What was your first. First role you got?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

The first job I got was when I was still living in Chicago. I played cute guy on Empire.

It was huge. I know you guys have seen it. Yeah. I had one line. It was, like, in a British pub, and my line was like, what's that? Voca soda. Can I buy you another? And then when we watched it on tv, it was somebody else's voice.

Oh, my God, his accent. Not gonna cut it.

Yeah, it was great right then. You know what?

[Ella Bright]

It was good. It was.

Yeah.

I would love to hear what it was back then.

Yeah, me too. Yeah. It was my first job, and I was like, okay, yeah, I'm doing an accent. Like, this is gonna be great.

They use your face different.

It's my face.

Yeah.

But when I watched it, I was like, that's not me.

[Rhiann Fran]

Question for you as trying to be an actor and, like, still living in Chicago, because I have a love for them. Did you ever try to get on any of the Chicago shows?

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Those, like, Dick Wolf, like, Chicago Med, Chicago Fire? Absolutely. So, like, when I started acting in Chicago, I had been modeling at the time, and in the Wrigley Building, my modeling agency shared a floor with an acting agency. Their dick. Two different companies. But I would go over, because I left school, I started modeling. That's how I was supporting myself. And I really just wanted to act. I didn't want to model it, like, from the minute I started. So I would go over and be like, hey, guys, like, this is what I want to do. And so I auditioned with them, and then I just started auditioning for stuff, and I had never trained for anything before and. Wait, sorry, what was your question? I was going somewhere with the Chicago shows.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

So actually, like, I did. I remember doing an audition for Claire Simon, who was a casting director there in Chicago, and it was for Chicago Fire, and it was like a really lengthy, like, emotional monologue. And this was, like, really early. And she was like, you have work to do. And I was like, okay, good. Yeah, I was like, for sure I did. Yeah. No, she gave really good feedback.

You're like, I didn't even want this. I just wanted you to tell me that's some work.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

I'm actually really glad I had kind of, you know, some sort of relationship with her because I was going out for those shows a lot and I hadn't done any acting before, so it was good to hear somebody be like, you need work, like we always do. And it was, like, nice to hear that kind of transparency.

Right.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

I didn't end up going on those shows from there.

[Chicks in the Office Host]

Is that. Did you pick up acting classes? Like, did you take notes from her? Because you said you didn't really work on it before that.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

I mean, like, actually, my agents in Chicago at the time gave really good feedback. I never, like, I wanted to do a conservatory at DePaul. I got in in Chicago, but it was going to take another three years and, like, I wouldn't be available. So I was just like, fuck that. I'm not going to school. I'm just going to, like. I just kept auditioning. The work I got, I used to, like, start learning about filmmaking. And then, like, right after I moved to la, I got Saved by the Bell. So I went and I did a series regular role. And, like, that was my film school. And, like, there were a lot of actors on that. It was, like, a really good, hard comedy. And that's where I cut my teeth.

What was the move like from Chicago to la? Quite the difference.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah. It took me years to, like, la, and then, like, another couple years to say that I love it. Yeah, I, like, drove from Chicago to la. I've actually done it a couple times. Like, when other people have moved there, too, I'll, like, fly back and Drive with them. This is a good drive. But yeah, I moved into a two car garage. I didn't know anybody there. And then Covid happened. So I was like, what the fuck is going on here? I don't think I made the right choice, but I had work. Like I had gotten saved by the bell right before. So I was really lucky. I probably would have had to go right back to Chicago when the pandemic happened. But yeah, it was an adjustment and I'm gonna next time I sign a lease. I've been floating around right now, but I'm gonna be in New York. Cause I just love it here.

Yeah, this is, you know, a lot of people from Chicago and here, you know, similar in some ways.

[Rhiann Fran]

Ella, could you make. Do you think you'll make a. A home base swap?

[Ella Bright]

Oh, absolutely. I. New York?

Yeah, sure.

In the next two years. If not like literally tomorrow.

I'm like, more than ever, I feel like people are moving to New York. It's like, you know what? Like, we always knew that it was the best, but I just feel like right now a lot of people are making the move to New York.

A lot of people leave, but then more coming.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

And by the way, no, hate to la. Like, I've like, like I had a. I was living in Laurel Canyon for a couple years and it was so, so, so nice. Someday I will absolutely go back there.

But like, I knew at a certain point when I was leaving Chicago I should do LA or New York and my manager was in la, so I went there and yeah, so like I've done la now I'll come back to it.

[Rhiann Fran]

Exactly. And it's all landed you right in this spot. I mean, you both said you read the deal. What from your, like what from reading about your characters, did you really want to take. To make sure that the character had it in the show?

[Ella Bright]

Yeah. I mean, what really stood out to me about the books and like surprised me when I was like kind of doing my research and kind of. I skim read an online copy during the audition process, like kind of searching up like the iconic time to read it. So I was just like. But like I loved. Yeah, like they both our characters have really like harder aspects to their lives that obviously create discussions that are unfortunately what a lot of people do go through. And I was really surprised by the amount of depth that these like fun and sexy books do have. And like, I think our show does a really good job at like, translating that for screen. And that was really important to both of us. We had a lot of discussions about, you know, what place these characters are in, their healing journeys and their growth, and I loved watching them interact and kind of helping each other through the season. That was really important to me.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah. For me, like, I wouldn't have done the show if Garrett was, like, just the big man on campus. Like, that's not who he is. That's how people perceive him. But, like, Garrett's deeply sensitive. Obviously, his backstory is, like, a very delicate element that I was interested in performing. But, yeah, there's a lot of layers to him, to Hannah, to the show. I mean, to, like, all of these characters. Like, we're slowly peeling layers back. And I thought, wow, like, after talking to Louisa and Jean, I was like, there's a lot of meat on the bone here. Wow. That was so hard to say.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah. But that's what I love about Garrett in the books, too. I mean, like, he's very trustworthy. He's, like, deeply caring people in his life.

Right. I mean, we see that, the backstory, him and his dad. What. What was it like working with Steve Halle, who is an incredible actor.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yes.

My God, when I was watching, I'm like, oh, Shameless. You have that moment, you get so excited. You're like, oh, my God, he's in this.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I loved him in Shameless. Yeah. Working with Steve is honestly easy. Yeah. I feel like we honestly do look quite a bit alike. So, like, as soon as we step into the characters, we are both kind

[Rhiann Fran]

of like, especially in the old. Like, it cuts to, like, an old picture of him and, you know, like the old. And I was like, wow, there really is a major similarity because he kind of has the whole beard going on in this, but, like, the younger, clean shaven. I was like, wow. There you can see the family resemblance.

[Ella Bright]

Yeah, completely.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

It's always. It's always nice to work with a more seasoned actor. You know, he's been in TV for a really, really long time, so there's little idiosyncrasies that you pick up on. Like, you can just tell, like, oh, man, he's like. He's been around long, like, for a good amount of time, so, like, he knows the job quite well. It's like, more. It's less about, like, what I learned from him, like, in performing, and more about, like, just as, like, as somebody on set, definitely.

Right.

[Rhiann Fran]

They're both such unique characters, too, which I think people are gonna love because it's a different, like, yes, it is a college romance, but. But they're both so individually different than what I think we're used to with, like those stereotypical, like, you know, the big hockey guy, the girl's always chasing him. Right. But this is like kind of the other way around. And it's like he's the one that falls first. And I feel like with Hannah and everything that she's gone through, so much of what we see is maybe the struggle and not as much the, like, recovery and how she wants to grow from that and not be identified by that. So it really is showing a whole different side. It's a totally different kind of dynamic of a relationship that I feel like we haven't seen in this type of show completely. Yeah. Which makes it really very unique. And I think that's why fans are so excited to watch it all play out. Was there anything that made you guys nervous about tackling with these characters?

[Ella Bright]

I mean, I always revert to just the skills, I think, for both of

[Rhiann Fran]

us, for these characters, singing and hockey.

[Ella Bright]

And I was like. But like, apart from that, did you

[Rhiann Fran]

know you had a great voice?

[Ella Bright]

I. Okay. Because you do have a fantastic. Means a lot. I. I was very much like, I can only sing alto parts. And like, I only would sing for like, my family or like in the shower or something like that. Like, I. But I did one musical in my school which I did not pick up on again. And it was Legally Blonde, the musical.

[Rhiann Fran]

And I went to an all girls

[Ella Bright]

school, so I played Emmett. So all the roles were like, like, very low.

[Rhiann Fran]

And I was like, it's fine.

[Ella Bright]

I don't need to like. And then like, the next play was Les Mis, and I was like, I don't need to do this. So I, like, helped direct it, which was really fun. But I. Yeah, I was like, I can't sing in front of people. Like, that was the only time I had sung in front of someone before. But every day behind stage, I was probably, like, pissing everybody off. Cause I was like, I can't do it.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

She was always able to sing very well. It was just about doing it in front of.

[Ella Bright]

Yeah, it was more just like my confidence, which I like. The show helped me grow with so much. And like, now I'm not like, averse to doing.

[Belmont Comelli (Belle)]

Yeah, they like, just threw into the fire.

[Ella Bright]

I was like, okay, we're doing like drunk karaoke in front of people who, yeah, like, sometimes would clap. And I was like, Ryan, I love

[Rhiann Fran]

that about Hannah too, though. Cause it's like, normally, it's like, girl gets shy and can't perform, and she can only sing in her room and can't play, but she's, like, racing to the stage. Like, that pop showcase she's getting out there and she's showing off.

Yeah.

[Ella Bright]

I honestly. And it's like, to what you said before as well. I definitely fell victim to that when I first got the casting call in. I played her in my initial self saving. Very, very shy, very meek, like, nerdy character. Kind of like the stereotypical trope that you see a lot. And then I. Yeah, my feedback back was like, no, like, she knows who she is. Like, she's very confident in where she is in life. And, like, she's dealt with things in the way that she thinks is okay. And obviously, there's holes in that, and it's the growth she goes on, but in terms of, like, she has two friends, but that's who she trusts, and that's what she is so content with. And she doesn't care for Garrett or anything. I think it's so fun. And I loved that about her. I loved that confidence that I think will surprise people who might have taken the same opinion that I did at first. Yeah. And that was really fun for me.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah.

This, to me, was the big episode of the season, plus the trailer on top of it. Yeah, we got Kyle and Carl's fight, which they promptly got over pretty quickly.

Watching them hug it out, I was like, that's.

But you know what? And it is. And it does go. It goes to show that they really are true friends. Because there's no. Like, sometimes you have an absolute blow up at one of your best friends and then it really just takes you two minutes to be like, oh, shoot, yeah, sorry. And then you're. And then you're good. When it's with other people, it can be harder. Like, it's interesting that him and Amanda can't seem to get on the same page and hug it out. But Carl and Kyle can hug it out, right?

And also Ben, I feel like Ben was like a good friend to Kyle this episode. Although, you know, we have talked about Kyle's behavior ad nauseam, at this point, everybody knows how we feel about Kyle's behavior. What Amanda and West have done does not excuse Kyle's behavior by any means. Obviously the other side of that is we don't know the conversations that are happening at home or no conversations that are happening. I mean, we get an inside look at their relationship when Kyle walks into the room that Sierra, Amanda, Mirin, like Amanda and Kyle, they don't even get up to go into another room to talk to each other alone. Like, they're just talking with everyone around. And that's why it's easy for people to get into their business. And then in a drunken state, Kyle's like, you would. No sex for seven years. There's no way that's true. I feel like that was like an obvious exaggeration because if they haven't had sex in. In seven years, then there's both. Something wrong with them. That they would continue on with this relationship for that. That had to be an exaggeration.

[Rhiann Fran]

I really think it was like, maybe like, it's like it's just a window.

It's so. So it dwindled down. But even still, I feel like intimacy is such an important part of your relationship that if you were to go a certain amount of time without being intimate with your partner, that you would talk about it with each other.

[Rhiann Fran]

And it feels like seven years of not addressing it right like that.

[Chicks in the Office Host]

Going that long or however long they've gone or even if it's very, very rare and if it's something that bothers one or the other, like, at a certain point, wouldn't you talk to each other about it? Like, that's what's freaking me out, that I'm like, why is the separation convo so shocking when like everyone else in the world is like, yeah, these two clearly shouldn't be together. Not only. Obviously, intimacy is not the only thing in a relationship. It is a big part. But on top of that, it doesn't seem like there's anything else going on as well in the relationship. So I don't know why separation is such a. Because it's like, no, duh. These. These two should separate from the outside looking in. And on top of that, we got more glimpses of west and Amanda and seems like clearly that we talked about Amanda was confiding West. Carl hit the nail on the head during Watch what Happens live when he said, like, it's so inappropriate for a guy to be like, touching a married woman like that. And I cannot hammer that home enough. I do not understand it. The way that Wes grabs the back of Amanda's neck or other women for that matter. Like, it's always very touchy. Grabbing the back of the neck, kissing the forehead, the Carlson, like the mid drift area. Like all things that are like just a more intimate than her and Kyle apparently have been. Like, I just. It's so off to me. And I think that Amanda clearly developed a crush from this, from confiding in West. And then on top of that, we got the Ciara and West kiss in the trailer.

[Rhiann Fran]

Yeah, it's. It's a lot to swallow. I think you're absolutely right that there is like, you can see her developing that safety with west where she goes and thanks him for pulling his chair up and they're having this long hug and all these things. And even, even when they all ran outside when Kyle and Carl were yelling at each other, it felt like Wes was there by Amanda's side, like, not necessarily trying to talk Kyle down, more like Kyle needs to calm down. But I want to like, make sure that Amanda's okay. And all of this going on at the same time as West, Ciara, Jesse, like kind of joking about they're getting their little group back and they're hanging out and it's like good vibes right now. Seeing it all happen, like cut back and forth is so crazy. Look, I did get a good giggle because as someone who dealt with an eye issue for a long time, I am familiar with all the eye care accessories. I know them All. I know all the compresses. I know all the wipes. I know everything. And when Kyle came back and was tipsy in the bath, in the. In the kitchen and looked like he had, like, a pirates thing on his. On his head, that was a hot compress. And he put that bad boy in the microwave, and he was ready to go. And even when he, like, went up to bed, got to bed with Amanda and, like, and put that hot compress on his eyes, I'm like, damn, guys. Developing a sty. I can see it.

Yeah, he did say he was developing a sty from stress. Yeah, very clearly. But. But, yeah, I just felt like there was so much in this episode shout out. You know, Lindsay did start the fight at the dinner, but the way that she went over to calm Carl down, and Carl kind of just locked in that moment, calmed down. And on the other side of both

of them, like, talking to Kyle, too.

The other side of that, Amanda's like, kyle, shut up or I'm gonna punch you in the face. You can't say that.
