Fra Folkemødets program: In the Peruvian Amazon region, the Kukama people, living near the Marañón River, believe that after passing, their ancestors became different creatures that now live in the river. In November 2024, the Kukama women took their cosmovision to court and succeeded in having the river granted legal personhood and themselves granted legal guardianship. The violations of Indigenous Peoples' rights, including the marginalization of Indigenous groups, are deeply connected to and intertwined with the continued loss of biodiversity and ecosystem degradation. Studies have shown that when Indigenous Peoples are forcefully evicted from their ancestral lands, the biodiversity often declines. To protect the life on our planet, we must respect and protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples. With this event, we invite Folkemødet’s participants onto Anton’s deck to see the world through Indigenous cosmovisions and present a nuanced perspective on how we can support both Indigenous Peoples and biodiversity.
