Fred VanVleet
Hey, man, it'd be like that sometimes,
DJ Wells
you know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
It's like once you make the decision that you gonna go for it, you might as well go all the way. Yeah, they gonna pay the money no matter what.
Co-host / Commentator
Who's the same all the way through, no matter what.
Fred VanVleet
I mean, it varies, but, like, if you gonna wild out, you gotta go all the way.
DJ Wells
You gotta get your money's worth.
Fred VanVleet
Pretty much, you gonna get your money's worth.
Co-host / Commentator
So that's good to know.
Fred VanVleet
Then I got a couple good ones. You know what I'm saying?
Co-host / Commentator
That's good to know.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Now, do y' all see that On y', all statement, like that little part missing, or they go ahead and take it out, like, immediately.
DJ Wells
Or is it.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
How's that work?
Co-host / Commentator
They take that shit out like child support.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, it come off the top. That's come off the check. That's come right off the top.
DJ Wells
But you could.
Fred VanVleet
You could fight some of them.
DJ Wells
But.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, the ones I did, you can't. No, it's so much argument. I was actually happy the last one that I was. I had a very good phone call. Like, I appreciate y'.
Co-host / Commentator
All.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? I thought it was gonna be worse. I thought it was gonna be because he jumped. Like, when he jumped, it made like. Like, I hit him.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
I got my phone after the game. They like, oh, he hit the ref. I'm like, man, we.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm six feet away from him.
Fred VanVleet
He jumped. He flinched. Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
You also get caught in that. Damn.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
I.
Co-host / Commentator
Knowing that all of them is the same. That's pretty dope, though.
DJ Wells
Regular tech.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, a regular tech is what it's. Sorry. Something like that.
Co-host / Commentator
No, keep God in your life.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
10K.
DJ Wells
You might be 10K. You put the Lord himself, Ricky. I think mine was like, 50K.
Co-host / Commentator
Okay. What about the. With the big eyebrows, though? The one that says something about dudes.
Fred VanVleet
Tony brothers.
DJ Wells
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
So did you just let.
DJ Wells
He was like, nah, I cussed him out, but he kind of was like, I ain't know it was your mama, bro.
Fred VanVleet
Okay.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I was like. That resurfaced recently, too.
DJ Wells
Oh, I did?
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Shout out to my.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Now, this is a crazy list right here. The first one, two bands, 6 to 10, 3, 11 to 15, 4, 16, and up. Damn.
DJ Wells
Draymond holding this down and Maluka boy, holding it down.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
5k a piece is crazy.
Fred VanVleet
It's crazy. Then it's like the main thing for me was, like, you see the reputation then, Like, I had a whole reputation. I still got the reputation, but the rest of that year, it was ugly. I mean, I don't shoot no free throws. I might be decent now because I'm the president again, but other than that, it was ugly. Like, I'm like, yo, y' all painting me like I'm one of them.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, yeah, but he talking all that time. What's your name in that? Rico. Yeah, it's ugly.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That zebra Rico.
DJ Wells
Different boy.
Fred VanVleet
It's over with. It's hard to get that back.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Nah, for sure, for sure. Hey, man, Midwest guy, for sure. Growing up in Illinois. Hoop scene was crazy in Chicago. How was that? Like, I know. Obviously you Was killing. But they say you didn't get as much like love or deserve. Well deserved love. Cause you didn't play on the AU circuit around the way.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, it was cool. I mean, we played everywhere. We played Indiana a lot. Probably more than. Than Illinois. I mean, you go to Chicago sometimes, but Indiana had the better tournaments. Like, I know you from the Maryville 219 area. They had the Speeds joint out here. Oh, yeah, they've been for a while. Yeah, we used to play the Indiana teams in my class was all the good teams, so I used to love playing that.
DJ Wells
Who was your class?
Fred VanVleet
Yogi Farrell.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Osha Yogi.
DJ Wells
Indiana legend, Indiana elite.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Oh, yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Speeds, Indie heat. Yeah, yeah, we played a couple. I think Glenn Robinson was Indiana.
DJ Wells
Yeah. Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
So I played against them, Hannah Pere, like, all of them teams with the iu, the Adidas joint. So shit, we come out here and get some bump. And then Illinois was tough. Jabari Parker was younger than me. But that, that, that era. But yeah, I mean, you know, AAU circuit and then like, Mac Irvin Fire. And by the time I got to the point where I was like a teenager, I thought. I thought I was grown. So it was like they was already too late. They coming, like, with the shoe bag and all that shit, like, come play for us. I'm like, man, I'd rather just play with my homies. Cause I'm not from the city. I'm from down the way.
DJ Wells
So.
Co-host / Commentator
Are you from Rockford? Yeah, I'm think, hey, y' all got a restaurant? Y' all got salt down there. It's so goddamn. That's about like 45 minutes.
DJ Wells
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Fred VanVleet
What rock. Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
Hey, I promise, salt is so good, bro. And that rock. That's the best one.
DJ Wells
Yes.
Co-host / Commentator
Jesus Christ. They got a sea bass. They got ribeye.
DJ Wells
But, like, why did you go mashed potatoes, huh?
Fred VanVleet
Why did you go.
Co-host / Commentator
Why you in my. Let me holler. Stay in the city. You can stay outside of Rockford. You know what I mean? It ain't a bad drive to go
Fred VanVleet
over to the city. It's like 45 minutes from all
Co-host / Commentator
with Fred.
Fred VanVleet
I know why you was out. You know what I'm saying?
DJ Wells
Respectfully. Respectfully.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Respect.
Fred VanVleet
Had a move, little tournament go get back.
DJ Wells
Marcus drove to Mexico. He drove to Rockford.
Fred VanVleet
Respect for sure. But yeah, quick overhaul, it's definitely out the way.
Co-host / Commentator
That's funny still, bro.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, so it was cool. Like, I'd rather play with my homies and, you know, trying not to get caught up in that other shit. And that was It. And then by the time I was in high school, we was beating all the good teams, so I was super cool. We just ain't had the shoe shit, the sponsorships and all that.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Ain't it crazy? Now, obviously, we talk about the college situation where you went to, man. You made your move, know what I'm saying? Wichita State with the Nil and stuff. Now, how you think it would have been, especially the way y' all had that campus rocking when you was there?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, we could have never. We could have never had the team that I had with Nil. I would have been gone half the jumper there. Yeah, true. 100,000. I'm out. I don't even need too much. But it is money in Wichita. And the coach that we had, he would have got the money out the community. But, yeah, I mean, it's so much. Bro, you 18, 19. Like, that's just a lot of money, bro. You know what I'm saying? It's really up the game in terms of, like, your mindset. Because my whole mindset was like, I'm going to Wichita. I'm kind of out the way. Ain't really have, like, no college life. The shit you see when you growing up, like, the parties and all that. Wichita ain't have none of that shit. You go to the bar and I was in the lab, I'm like, man, I'm trying to go to the league. I'm gonna have my fun in the league. So if we would have been getting paid back then, it would have been stupid.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, you talk about that all the time. Like you said, if I'm getting paid 100 bands, 200 bands at 18, where's my hunger at? Cause I already made it in most people's eyes.
DJ Wells
Yeah, it would have been over for me. Over. It was already. You seen me, my rookie year, it was over.
Co-host / Commentator
Oh, man. But it just. I don't know, man. I think that all come from the crib, too, though. If the crib is cool, y' all be cool with that little cheese, bro.
DJ Wells
But think about if you getting. Let's say you a top, top player. You get a million your first year, and somebody tell you, you can get this for the next four years. I'm not thinking about the NBA at all. At all. A million dollars.
Co-host / Commentator
If I'm the top motherfucker, I'm out of there.
Fred VanVleet
No, for sure. But it's a lot of other players that, like I'm saying, I'm just speaking for myself. Like, I wasn't on no draft points nowhere. Never none of my four years. So it's like I had to keep. But if I would have been getting like a 750 or something, I'd have been like, shit.
DJ Wells
I'm like, think about my young, you
Fred VanVleet
know what I'm saying? And there's no overhead.
DJ Wells
Went to Miami. Oh, Nigel called.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Nigel, bro. Ran it up.
Co-host / Commentator
That's true. That's true.
DJ Wells
Start throwing parties.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Oklahoma got another bag.
DJ Wells
Still lit. I wouldn't have been thinking nothing about that. I would have bought a. You know me, I'm crap. Probably bought a Lambo.
Fred VanVleet
We ain't got no bills. You would send something to the crib. No dollars. Make sure mom and them strike.
DJ Wells
Mom and dad. Five beds a month.
Fred VanVleet
You outside. You a teenager still. Really?
DJ Wells
For real? For real.
Co-host / Commentator
Oh, Fred. I'mma live.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm a Vernon Maxwell, that thing I'm saying. But if I'm there, I still want to go to the. Did you have like aspirations to go to the league or did you want to be the best college player you want?
Fred VanVleet
Nah, hell no. I hated college. I wanted to go to the league. My whole mindset every day was trying to get to the league. I just was crazy enough to think I was going to go right away, you know what I'm saying? I didn't even start my freshman year. I came off the bench till like once we went to the tournament, I started playing more and more. And then my sophomore year, we had a real good team. We was number one in the country that year.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Hell yeah.
Fred VanVleet
So that's when the scouts started coming to practice and shit. So I'm like, okay, I'm lit. But I had a good shit. My setup was sweet in college though. I wasn't trying to leave too fast, you know what I'm saying? I was trying to get drafted. That was my main thing. Like I thought I could work up the draft boards, but that shit don't work like that.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Nah. Like you said, I had a whip. Well, Clancy was there. Yeah. Ron Baker.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, Ron Baker.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, I had a whip. I had pros on that team.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, we had a good ass team, bro. But I think I had a good coach too. And I was just. Cause like we got a lot of young guys on our team now. Like, like a lot of the kids that's come to the NBA now, they don't know how to play.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Damn.
Fred VanVleet
So like I was just happy that I had a good coach and he taught me how to play. So by the time I got to the league, I kind of. You know what I'm Saying the transition was easy. Yeah, I had a good foundation to go off of. That helped me a lot.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, you always talk about that. Even as a high school coach, he was like, I'm having to teach stuff that we should learn in elementary school. Now that kids. They're not kids, but should they get to the NBA and having to learn how to do picking rolls and shit.
Fred VanVleet
They learn the game backwards now. Shit, you do all the difficult shit first.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? And by the time you get. You know, it's like a certain age. Like, if you can't shoot, by the time you 18, you probably cook pretty much. You ain't. That's how it is sometimes you can't
DJ Wells
fix eight and just so gifted that you can't deny it.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
Damn.
DJ Wells
As a guard, if you can't shoot right now, you kind of cook. And it's NBA.
Fred VanVleet
It's hard. It's hard to add it.
Co-host / Commentator
I. Niggas better get a job, boy. Y' all talking about if you can't shoot by 18 and you gotta be six' eight, I'm saying.
DJ Wells
Cause you gotta have something gotta jump off the screen. Like, when I used to scout, we used to say, who? What's his superpower? Right.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
DJ Wells
So if your superpower is. If I can't find it when I'm looking at you. Shit, you cook, I need to come in the gym and be able to see your superpower immediately. Like, all right, he can shoot.
Co-host / Commentator
So shooting the most important thing to get somebody into the NBA right now.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, I think so.
Co-host / Commentator
What's.
Fred VanVleet
What they paying for? Yeah, I think. I mean, size, just being tall, just, you know, that's always gonna win over the size of athleticism, because that's what it is. It's like, you gotta be a freaking nature out there. That's what everybody got to survive. But, I mean, shooting is the separator to me. Like, if you could shoot, the better. The more better you can shoot, the better your chance is gonna be, because that's what they paying for right now. Spacing and shooting. You know what I'm saying? And so if you don't have that, you just have more of a disadvantage. So your other shit gotta be off the roof.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Never gotta be a superior athlete.
Fred VanVleet
Much better.
DJ Wells
Yeah, you gotta have a competitive nature, too. Like, that's the one thing I always appreciate about your game. Even being a smaller guard, I wasn't a defender at all. But you was actually known for your defense, right? So when you came in the league, I was like, this motherfucker really be guarded. I was like, laughing at him like, ah, this nigga's trying hard as fuck. And I'm like, hold on, motherfuckers is with. And then he started scoring. He always been a good shooter, but then he started adding more and more to his game. But he was known for defense. Like, when I watched you in the finals guarding Steph, I'm like, he really guarding Steph?
Co-host / Commentator
Damn, that's crazy.
DJ Wells
Like, he doing a good job. Like, what the fuck?
Fred VanVleet
And you gotta be cool with that. I knew n was laughing at me like, I ain't squirt.
DJ Wells
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
I just don't talk. Like, I just. From me being in Houston, people just realized I'm not from Canada, you know what I'm saying? So you don't know I came. I ain't had no vc, I ain't have no swag, and, like, got out
Podcast Host / Interviewer
the mud, you know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
But I'm out. That bitch. Picking up full court. I remember my rookie year. I think I played in okc, or we played okc, and I picked up Russ, full court. And I remember everybody's like, yo, what the fuck you doing, man? Like, nobody pick him up full court. I'm like, shit. I'm trying to figure it out. You know what I'm saying? Like, I gotta find a way somehow. So I was willing to do whatever. God damn. And make my way. So that was the way I got in. It was like, all right, you gotta play D. You gotta change the game and change the tempo. That was like, the two things that I tried to do. And then the offense came later.
Co-host / Commentator
I was just about to ask you that. Like, when you transition from college to going to the NBA, what was that like, bro?
Fred VanVleet
Man, it was cool. It was hard because I was trying to make it. Like, I was trying to find some security, you know, from being undrafted, not having a guaranteed contract. I was just trying to get, like, some security, like a year or two, then I could work on my game. So that first part was tough. And then once I realized, like, I wasn't playing, I was just enjoying it. You know what I'm saying? I'm in the league. I'm chilling. I'm eating Skittles on the bench. Like, I'm just watching the show. That's how I go. And then when you don't have no chance of playing, you really just chilling, traveling, and you outside, for sure. So I did that. But I worked on my game every day, and I Studied every day, you know what I'm saying? And I just stuck close to the vest that I had. And so that was like that first initial transition. And then once I started playing, then I built it a little bit more from there. But at first I was just happy to be there. I'm still happy to be here, but I was just super happy to be in the league at that point, for sure.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Hell, yeah. Obviously a lot of respect. How you got to the NBA and kept grinding and made your way in a situation very admirable. But it's funny now. You went to the G League, made the most of it and got back in league. Now you got people in the G League trying to go back to college.
Fred VanVleet
Like, that is crazy.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Like, yeah, I'm in the G League. Fuck it, let me go back to my school. The times is wicked.
Fred VanVleet
So what y' all think about that? Because I don't know, I got different couple opinions on that.
Co-host / Commentator
Cause I feel like this shit lame, say it fresh, but you gotta get
Podcast Host / Interviewer
a bag of every year. I like it.
Co-host / Commentator
If I played in the NBA, if I guarded Fred Van Fleet and I played a whole season or two in the NBA, nigga, I'm not going back. Goddamn it. Boston University. Yeah, I'm not doing that, bro.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
But if you're not getting no bread,
Fred VanVleet
I don't think there's been nobody that did that.
Co-host / Commentator
I think it's like, bro, it's about to be people. That's the NBA game.
Fred VanVleet
How many games did he play in the league?
DJ Wells
10. They said 10.
Fred VanVleet
That's what I'm saying. Like, bro, if you. If you. Because they young, right? This is what I'm saying. They young. So if you young and just shit, you jump early and it ain't work out for you. They getting paid anyway.
Co-host / Commentator
All that college, you should have went right back.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Oh, yes.
Co-host / Commentator
That you should have run right back.
DJ Wells
It's just really the new G League. The best G League.
Fred VanVleet
It's a better G League. The only thing I was gonna say was, duh, we let the European can come over whenever.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, that's a fact.
Fred VanVleet
They can sign with college. They can go pro. They can do it. There's no restrictions on them.
Co-host / Commentator
Let's see. I ain't nobody 30 year old European. That dude, though.
Fred VanVleet
So they. Yeah, they on the way.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm not arguing. Saying it's not.
Fred VanVleet
No, no, I'm saying. But then like, the kid from Baylor got all the attention. I don't know how many have done it. Yeah, I seen the kid from Baylor, but Like, man, he. He ain't impacting the game like that.
Co-host / Commentator
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
Like, if he was coming like he was a national player of the year, be like, all right, bro, you tripping. Freshman's still willing to work Amari Bailey. If he get to play college, he gonna have a run. He gonna kill. You know what I'm saying? But they pros now, so, you know, pros gotta play against pros.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, that's like Charles Bodiaco. When they played Florida yesterday and they started beating him, they was just like, G League dropout. I'm like, that's crazy, bro.
DJ Wells

Fred VanVleet
They average age like 25.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah yeah, I told niggas.
DJ Wells
Oh that's it. Hey hold on, hold on.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
One of them.
Fred VanVleet
Nobody say nothing about them.
DJ Wells
We will respect the signetti on the show. My boy hopped in the portal and then
Podcast Host / Interviewer
see look. Average age is 23. That's Kobe.
Co-host / Commentator
Here we go.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Good money.
DJ Wells
I just don't they all sing Just
Co-host / Commentator
being pros and going back to play with the youngsters. Bro.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's crazy cuz.
Co-host / Commentator
If I'm not going to. If I'm not going. And I don't have better years than AJ the basa or old boy from Kansas is quiet, bro.
Fred VanVleet
I think the. I think the real issue.
DJ Wells
They not better than them, though.
Fred VanVleet
And Jeff probably know you coaching high school, so, like, I think the high school kids get the. The short end.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Of all of this.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Because it's like.
Co-host / Commentator
Exactly.
Fred VanVleet
Your coach is just in the portal or they going to get.
Co-host / Commentator
Yes, bro.
DJ Wells
Pro.
Fred VanVleet
So like that it's harder for a high school kid to get recruited and come in and play. You got to be like, stupid, nice.
Co-host / Commentator
You got to be McDonald's All American now.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
But like you say, you look right now, and the best players, some of them at least, and they say right now are all freshmen with. And they putting belts on all the more niggas too.
DJ Wells
But I like it because, like, if you. You know, a lot of people want to go high major and they go there and they don't play right away or ain't get a chance or they might play a junior senior year. Now you can go to a lower level school, a D. Lower D. 1 mid major. If you really good, you gonna shine there.
Co-host / Commentator
I agree with you on that one.
DJ Wells
I like that, though.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm saying, do you bring these motherfuckers back to the college? Do they get drafted now?
DJ Wells
Oh, no, it's quiet.
Fred VanVleet
No, it's over with. It's over with.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
You ain't going back.
Fred VanVleet
Back then back. Life is crazy.
Co-host / Commentator
Wait till y' all can't get drafted twice. Don't like, make sure y'.
Fred VanVleet
All.
DJ Wells
They just trying to get a higher level for overseas.
Co-host / Commentator
Y' all remember this day.
DJ Wells
I drafted twice is crazy.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I wait for the person to go
DJ Wells
back and really kill.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I wait till the 125 go back to con and go to the final four.
Co-host / Commentator
Yes, bro.
DJ Wells
I want to see that.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, I do too. I do.
DJ Wells
I want.
Fred VanVleet
Rules should be the same. If we gonna let Europeans do or. Or people from overseas or foreign people. Like, let them come. Whatever they should be able to do, we should be able to do. And I think the NBA is going to step in at some point and make it make sense. Cuz, like, ultimately the league will be better if those leagues are better. If college and the G league is better, that's going to give us better players too. They'll step in at some point.
DJ Wells
The league gonna have to step in because I would never go to. I would go straight to the G league.
Fred VanVleet
You going straight to the G. I
DJ Wells
would never go to college. I go in the G League first and see if I can make it to the league if I can't. Going to college?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah.
DJ Wells
Like, why would I ever step on college campus first?
Fred VanVleet
Like, for what?
DJ Wells
Yeah, I got a chance to go back. I go overseas, I'll do all that stuff first.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Damn, that's funny for sure, man. That is crazy. I go back, it's a hell of a fallback play. But it just looked crazy, bro. Like we was talking about it. You being on campus with fucking 19 year olds. Yeah, bro.
DJ Wells
I mean, you get paid so much in college, though, so I see why people will go, though. Like, true.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
It's free money.
DJ Wells
They need to open straight out of high school again, though. Yeah. Cause Darren Peterson, A.J. deBencer. That was pointless, bro.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. Those NBA players.
DJ Wells
Yeah, that's pointless to be in college right now. I know they making a lot of money, but shit, what we doing, bro?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, the both of them is pros.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Well, he did a year.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Come on, bro. Pointless years.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. That is crazy. Shout out to Stackhouse. Not Stackhouse. I got Jamal Mashburn, bro. Cooper Flag would have been top five this year as well, bro. He said he was this year. He reclassed for a reason. I'm like, nah, bro, respect. I know the freshman's cold, but Cooper Flag just. Denver had 50, bro.
DJ Wells
Oh, he said. He said he wouldn't have been top five.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, he said he'd have been number six.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He put the Dr. Umar on it, so I ain't mad at it. I get it.
Fred VanVleet
It's like, it's free month.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I'm rolling as well. But Cooper flack. Denver dropped 50.
DJ Wells
Yeah, Cooper flack.
Fred VanVleet
No, he nice.
DJ Wells
He would have been if he was
Podcast Host / Interviewer
at Duke with K Boozer right now.
DJ Wells
Oh, my God.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, he nice.
DJ Wells
He probably be the number two pick. And he.
Fred VanVleet
They age.
DJ Wells
Yeah, he. They age.
Fred VanVleet
He gonna be a step ahead of them. He got a year on them. Yeah, he nice. I fuck with his game.
Co-host / Commentator
Back to you, bro. When you first got your real footing in the league, how'd that feel, man, when you got your shot?
Fred VanVleet
Man, my first deal. My first deal was two years, and I signed another two years.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
And then so it was like two years 18, and, man, that was it. I was cool. I never looked back. I ain't going back. You know what I'm saying? I played a little bit, like 40 games my rookie year. I was like a backup my second year, and then I got a contract, so I'm like, fuck. And then my third year we won the chip.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Hell, yeah.
Fred VanVleet
I was like, shit, I'm lit. You know what I'm saying? I'm 25, got paid, made some money. I was like, I'm here. Cause, like, you think you good. You got confidence. You know you good. You play against your peers and shit like that, but you always waiting on, like I said, some security. You know what I'm saying? Especially when you come in and you see a guy that's drafted, lottery or the first round, they get four, five years to figure it out. You know what I'm saying? So you had time. My shit was like. Like, you just waiting on the opportunity. You know what I mean?
Co-host / Commentator
I'm not jotting down no deals.
Fred VanVleet
Nah, hell no.
Co-host / Commentator
That's.
Fred VanVleet
I mean, I always tell people, like, they be getting that shit misconstrued, bro. Like, you only can operate with the deal that's on the table.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
It's a fact.
Fred VanVleet
What's on the table? So you be turning down some shit that's on the table for some shit that is imaginary?
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
So whatever the best deal on the table is, that's where I'm going with
Podcast Host / Interviewer
every time I hear that. That's the Jeff T Bottle right there, B.
DJ Wells
Still, like, for Gabe Quin Grom, big up his money, but shout out to
Co-host / Commentator
qg, it's a hell of a gamble.
DJ Wells
I told Cam Thomas that, though. You did. Don't leave that chance.
Fred VanVleet
You gotta take that money, bro. You don't know what's gonna happen. And the fucked up part about the NBA is they'll do you dirty black
DJ Wells
dog if you don't take it. Yeah, the president's telling y'. All. Nah, I respect y' all happy.
Fred VanVleet
It's just business. Yeah, I think even more so than basketball. Just business. Like, how can you negotiate with some shit that you don't even have available to you? Like, I know I'm worth more than,
Podcast Host / Interviewer
like, all right, you work for.
DJ Wells
They pay. Tell you what you work.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, you work the market. Motherfucker willing to pay you. So, yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Then when you don't, you in the tunnel trying to smack people.
DJ Wells
The market tell you, bro, you got
Podcast Host / Interviewer
to put hands and feet to people because they disrespect your paycheck.
Co-host / Commentator
Did you do something crazy, that first piece of change?
Fred VanVleet
Nah, I really be chilling. I bought a Rollie. Yeah, that was like, my first thing. I bought a Rollie. I had already bought my mom a crib when I. On my first deal. I was making like 500,000 my first year. Then my second year was 900. So I bought my mom a crib. And then, man, we went to Vegas, though. We definitely went to Vegas. Out the gate, took all the guys to Vegas. We signed and then we flew with the management from Toronto to Vegas for summer league. And yeah, we had a time. We had like a three, four day trip. Just straight.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Fresh off the bag. I bought a Rollie. That was it, though. I don't know. I was just.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, you from a small town
Podcast Host / Interviewer
and your journey a little bit different. He had to fight for that spot. So he was like, I'm enjoying this bread. I'm happy I got it. I'm.
Fred VanVleet
Man, I was like a regular person before I was in the NBA. Like, when I was in college, I was lit, but, like, bro, I was. I was a regular person. Like, nobody know who I am. You know what I'm saying? Like, I wasn't coming in. I'm just a superstar. And everybody kissing my ass. Like, I had to grind for that.
Co-host / Commentator
So that's dope.
Fred VanVleet
It was a little bit easier for me when I got the money. Now I still some money up.
Co-host / Commentator
No, yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? As we all do. But I think, like, jewelry and like that cars. But hell no. I. I worked too hard for mine.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
N N for that. Like you said, getting in the rotation. You look at that squad of people y' all had. Everybody dam still around, still thriving.
DJ Wells
They all became all stars. Yeah, yeah. He got squad.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Come on, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
Everybody became all star.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Ask MPZ Got his first all Star, B.
Fred VanVleet
You know my guy, freaky P.E.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
my guy, P. Skills. Four time, first ballad. Now being first ballot.
Co-host / Commentator
P. Skills. I'm with it. I just think, you know, P. Skills, you holler at me if you feel away. I thought you had to be on a winning team to make the all Star game. Nah, I don't hate nobody all star
Fred VanVleet
N. But it's the east, man. Anything goes in the east, man.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He's still living off the 2015 snub of LaMelo Ball. That's what he on right now.
Co-host / Commentator
Well, last year. Yeah, yeah, like, LaMelo didn't make it, bro. And P. Skills got in. That's I ain't gonna hate, bro. I think on some real shit, like, what are the rules, bro?
Fred VanVleet
I think. And you the president. All right, listen. I think when it comes down to it now, when you get to that point, you gonna pick somebody that's already been in there over somebody that's never been in. Like I said, you gotta have repeat years. Yeah, I'M defending my man, obviously. At the same time, copy skills. I think it do like you will pick somebody that's already been an all star. Then you will pick somebody that's not an all. It don't work like, oh, he not an mvp. They'll give to somebody that never had it before. They do like doing that shit.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Boulders fatigue is real mvp.
Fred VanVleet
But I don't know this the coaches. So I think you know the coaches play for the reserves. That's who you need to be talking to.
DJ Wells
And he an international player, though.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
DJ Wells
So you know they got the international.
Fred VanVleet
The world. World Craig USA versus the world.
Co-host / Commentator
All right. Respect.
Fred VanVleet
You ain't rolling. I ain't mad at you. Got your opinion.
Co-host / Commentator
Cause I don't want Fred. You feel me? He important. I don't want to banter on it too much, but nah, I'm shit.
Fred VanVleet
I want to hear what you think, but.
Co-host / Commentator
Cuz, there's too many rules to make the All Star team. It's. I swear to God. The needle moves every year, bro.
DJ Wells
MPJ should have been all Star trash, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
Skills is a killer. Oh, God, he can hoop on my mama. You shouldn't be no All Star, bro.
Fred VanVleet
So you like team Horrible, bro. You like MPJ over him?
Co-host / Commentator
Yes. Yes, bro. I left, I left my trash. I left my that 67. I left my trash ass team that didn't fuck with me. And I'm over here killing now, bro. Nah, I'm killing. I got my own team. Like, I left a championship team. My fault. Not trash ass. A championship team now I'm the man. I'm averaging 25.
Fred VanVleet
No, he very deserving, I think. I'm never taking him over Pascal. Anything basketball related ever.
Co-host / Commentator
Y' all real basketball players though, bro. But All Star game, nigga throw that between his legs.
Fred VanVleet
That's the other thing. That's the other thing too. That'd be my argument me is like, I think those lists should be different lists. Who gonna put the best All Star game on? Yeah, All Star game should always have a Trey Young, a Lamelo Kyrie.
Co-host / Commentator
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
That's exciting. We talking about just like the best players or like the best season. I'm not taking him over Pascal, bro. I, I, I respect your opinion.
Co-host / Commentator
Nah, if we, if we're doing a draft on God, give me Pascal. Every time. I'm talking about, about for the excitement of this game. Like respect, bro.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
We need MPJ volleyball line three.
Co-host / Commentator
I want to see Lamelo in.
Fred VanVleet
It's always bro. He African too. So you Know they on the world. Yeah, but always guys that's deserving to be all stars that don't make it every year. It's gonna be a snub every year.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Bi.
Fred VanVleet
You just don't want it to be you. Yeah, B, I deserve to be in there.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's a factor year, cuz.
Co-host / Commentator
Patting them. They cast lit in there this year.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
New York.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. That is crazy. Respectfully. I mean, it's crossing towns, but all star year. I'm slee. But the E is.
DJ Wells
I mean, he really. His numbers. Yeah, his numbers still say all.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They just about to say this. About to be on team no more, bro.
Fred VanVleet
But he playing like an all star.
DJ Wells
What's.
Fred VanVleet
What's Cat numbers?
DJ Wells
He playing 2 or 13.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
It's gonna be respectable, cuz Cat for sure.
Fred VanVleet
And they what, top four in the East.
DJ Wells
Yeah, he. He all star star.
Fred VanVleet
Playing like an all Star, bro.
DJ Wells
We just expect him to play like A.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
All 20 and 11.
DJ Wells
All right, 20, 11, 20, and 12.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I'm round up.
Fred VanVleet
We got to round that up.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I'm respected. 2012 is solid number killer, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
All these. I just be.
DJ Wells
I just think that's a bad year for Cat. That's all.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Go to Jo and B numbers.
DJ Wells
I know. I know.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He ain't gonna ever qualify because he
Co-host / Commentator
played a different look for the league. No, I'm. People are pulling away from it.
Fred VanVleet
So what do. Right. So now, because I'm in this seat now and I'm in these conversations, what would y' all tell change?
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Go back to the regular jerseys now that I'm first and foremost nostalgia. And B, I know he don't play that much, but 277 is crazy. He's balling.
Co-host / Commentator
Now that I'm talking to the motherfucker president. Get this off my goddamn.
Fred VanVleet
Come on, let's get it. Listen, let me get right.
Co-host / Commentator
All these goddamn. I get it, bro. The foreigners, they running the league. Top players. I get it. But all these people playing these. The. The. The American play the foreigner, and then you got them play the. The G League. Then you play the American team. Then the winners out of that play each other. Then the first to 12. Like all this bullshit, bro. Go back to when it was a regular nigga matchups. Like, yeah, the best 12 versus the best 12, no matter where you from.
Fred VanVleet
You like east, west or.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, east west or just blended. We just want to see the all Star game, be a regular NBA game again, bro.
Fred VanVleet
Bro telling what competitor with you. I'll be having these same conversations, but I think the fans got more Input than they think they got. Cause Adam, ultimately, the league is listening to what the fans want, what they want to see. And he don't have like a bias either way, you know what I'm saying? But we do gotta fix this shit. We gotta address it, you know what I'm saying? I think my thing was. I said the jersey. It was a simple thing.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Come on, bro.
Fred VanVleet
Back to the jerseys. Nike used to do the shoes. Everybody had a specific shoe. And I think you just get the best 24, the top 24, and figure out a way to separate the All Star from the all NBA shit, you know what I'm saying? Because it's like two different things.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I'm rolling.
Fred VanVleet
I might want to be a All Star just for my contract or for my purposes on some Jimmy Butler shit, but I might not even actually want to play.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's a fact.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I mean? Or I'm hurt. But then you taking away from somebody else that could get in there too, so. Nah, I'm with you. But what NBC Olympics coming up.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
You know, the.
Fred VanVleet
That's where the world come from.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
And the NBA obviously dabbling. And the European stuff. I'm sure in a couple years don't
Fred VanVleet
have teams over there.
Co-host / Commentator
Game is played in America, man. Damn, man. Take that. Take that to China, bro. And do all these n playing each other, bro.
DJ Wells
If y' all do do that, I will play.
Fred VanVleet
Bring.
Co-host / Commentator
Bring back the vibes, man.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They used to mean something, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
It used to. Seeing Jordan and goddamn Iverson and Shaq and. And whoever else, bro.
DJ Wells
PMAC love it like that, though still.
Co-host / Commentator
I think he would.
Fred VanVleet
I talked to a couple young guys this year that say they gonna go put on the show. So I'm hoping. I ain't gonna say who it is,
Podcast Host / Interviewer
but Wimpy said he owned that. He said, I don't know if everybody playing hard, but I am.
Fred VanVleet
I'm hoping that the young next guys, once the old guys get out the way, the young next guys can bring that back. Cause like the old. I mean, what bron 22 years in a row, like, you know what I'm saying? And he put on a show every year.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Year.
Fred VanVleet
But it's just hard, like for them to fly somewhere and then putting them in these cities.
Co-host / Commentator
N. You know what I want to
Fred VanVleet
see for a day?
DJ Wells
I want to see Ant go at Shay. I want like, call him out, me and you.
Co-host / Commentator
Yes, bro.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah. We need Ant to play hardest.
DJ Wells
Yeah, can't do that. We need.
Fred VanVleet
We need. We need Ant to play what he shoot all left Hand shots last year or some. Yeah, we need ant to to play
Co-host / Commentator
to lock in bro.
DJ Wells
If he go ass say then we
Co-host / Commentator
good cuz the D contest already gone bro. After Smith rings.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. It's not coming back.
Co-host / Commentator
What's.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
What's that Cook?
Co-host / Commentator
What's my. What's my white boy from Georgetown.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Y' all didn't.
Co-host / Commentator
Y' all didn't wash that and rinsed him off and rung him out and washed him and rinsed like he's cooked.
DJ Wells
Yeah, he said he was.
Co-host / Commentator
He is a four time NBA and that can't stay in the league to save his life.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They put the popeyes lady next to him. I'm tired of shaving.
Co-host / Commentator
Don't use me like this for this.
Fred VanVleet
Hear me out though. 10 day right before February 1st.
Co-host / Commentator
He might get a 10 day tomorrow.
Fred VanVleet
That might be a hundred thousand.
Co-host / Commentator
Listen, don't play with my emotions. Y' all be having this go and do all this jump over people and cars and sign a play 12 games. Yeah, we'll call you next year. Yeah bro.
Fred VanVleet
It's mid because Jackson Haynes though. But listen if you get all the. That h. If you get the name that you want in there and they go out there I'm and miss and do all that then people going to kill. It's hard to have a dunk contest in 2023. Listen, nobody.
Co-host / Commentator
No disrespect to to Mac. Didn't nobody give a if he made or missed it.
Fred VanVleet
No, I'm with you on that BJ
Co-host / Commentator
and them young get out there and all them get out there and try some crazy. It's going to be exciting. Yeah they might miss it but at least you get to see the best players in the league. League or you don't even got to be the best players. It could be a medium tier guy.
Fred VanVleet
I think it's somebody a good example for me. Like I think Jalen Brown did it.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
A year or two ago.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
DJ Wells
Or when out there.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? That's what I'm doing.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
No turbo dunk, no help, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
I ain't Mike right here. I ain't gonna say nothing. When Zach. When Zach and Aaron Gordon. Aaron Gordon did it bro contest. They ain't the best players in the league.
Fred VanVleet
They're like special dunkers though.
DJ Wells
That's what we need no more dunks bro. It ain't no more bj.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah it is. Oh God.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Both the Thompson twins get in there.
Co-host / Commentator
These YouTubers be clowning, bro.
DJ Wells
Yeah, they dunk every single day. They are basketball players. Bro, they move, they work that game. They shoot three.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Because you put a million dollars up and think that would entice people to do it, say, all right, million dollar dunk contest. Who fucking with.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, but I also, we just had this conversation too. I also, I don't want to, I don't want to keep like throwing money in n face too. Like everything got a dollar amount too. Like, oh, y' all gotta play hard. We gonna give you money. Like, nah, some shit gotta be for the love of the game too. I'm rolling, bro, I'm rolling like, because that's gonna bring more out of it than like, yes, it should be a prize, some type of incentive. But at some point, like, come on bro, this is what we love to do too.
Co-host / Commentator
I don't think I give you a million dollars to play in it. Cause y' all about to get out there bullshitting. But to win it, you got a chance.
Fred VanVleet
But then you leaving it up to the judge. And now you ready to fight.
DJ Wells
Fight.

Co-host / Commentator
That's what they call it.
DJ Wells
The mailbox.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah them Happy Carville and Utah was a fucking choice.
DJ Wells
Like feel like me right now.
Co-host / Commentator
I don't want Fred my guy. You don't have to respond to nothing that I'm saying. I want you just to hear what I'm saying. Let's go all the way I said the M. Man, any that played in the 80s, you can't watch these young you Paw Paw. You know what I mean? Throw a n water.
Fred VanVleet
I think we got Vince TMac.
Co-host / Commentator
There it is.
Fred VanVleet
So yeah. You like them?
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
Hell yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I with abc the D contest.
Co-host / Commentator
Cuz all them had hops. All them understand what to look for in some like that.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Okay, the judges this year. Kevin Garnett. I'm rolling. Tracy McGrady, Baron Davis and Jason Richardson.
Co-host / Commentator
I don't got no L. I'm with that. That's all I'm saying.
Fred VanVleet
Listen, this why I'm ask y'.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
All.
Fred VanVleet
Cuz I with y' all just don't be with them that just sit up here and just on give us some solutions. Listen, people, listen.
Co-host / Commentator
I be trying, bro. I don't be trying on that. But clearly somebody listen. Y' all went from smart. I just got in there. Got in there. Let me.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Now my next motion is Jericho S can never do a dunk contest again after that. That contest.
Co-host / Commentator
I thought that was a wrestler.
DJ Wells
That's for sure. Listen, he knew jump high but when
Podcast Host / Interviewer
he held that pissed me off.
DJ Wells
Ain't no more dunks, bro. Yeah, we ran out of kids. It's no more.
Co-host / Commentator
Listen, it's a kid every day.
Fred VanVleet
Would you.
Co-host / Commentator
It's some dunks left.
Fred VanVleet
What y' all think about like horse or some like that or 1v1 some pro or 1v1 like something else different than what we don't got right now?
DJ Wells
Oh, I'd like to see 1v1.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
1v1 All Star Ones or King of
DJ Wells
the Hill, three dribbles.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Something.
Fred VanVleet
The only thing I'm worried about with
DJ Wells
that it might take. Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Ones don't look like how I look on Instagram. In real life.
Co-host / Commentator
That is. Oh God.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's like you might shout to the next chapter.
Fred VanVleet
It's been like 15 minutes without making a shot. So I don't know if that make good T tv.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Nah. And you need a ref too.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, and you need a ref.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Ain't nobody giving up.
Co-host / Commentator
If y' all went to five, you got three dribbles or seven seconds.
DJ Wells
They had to play off like not live. They have to just show it like that's.
Fred VanVleet
That's what I'm worried about with the ones like. It don't really look. It don't really go like that in real life. People playing hard.
Co-host / Commentator
Because the three point contest is going to be the three point contest.
Fred VanVleet
That's the best event.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's the best event.
Fred VanVleet
But I'm thinking Like, it's got to be something else. You could do some type of shooting.
DJ Wells
But Stephanie made that event so exciting.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, I'm cool with that, bro. They kept that. But that's a shoot. It's only so much.
DJ Wells
I mean, it's a print, everybody.
Co-host / Commentator
So many ways. You can shoot a 3i with it.
Fred VanVleet
Because
DJ Wells
the whole rack one time be crazy, right?
Co-host / Commentator
Or y' all kicked them out.
Fred VanVleet
I didn't do nothing. I just got in there.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He's great.
Fred VanVleet
I don't know what's got. What they got going on. I support. I support the women shout out to the W and all that going on.
DJ Wells
This is him every day. I hope y' all know this. We just walking around, like, I might change up a little bit. I might be, like, a little more political correct. We off camera. I might say some. I really feel. Yeah, he say this here.
Co-host / Commentator
I be like, no, I didn't mean to say that. I didn't mean to ask you that.
Fred VanVleet
No, I really don't know. I don't know. I. I didn't have nothing to do with.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
You did a skill challenge, didn't you? Yeah, yeah.
DJ Wells
Don't talk about.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm saying when he did that, bro, it was.
DJ Wells
He look it up.
Co-host / Commentator
But I'm saying he missed everything that did in that. They could have got rid of that, though. You was nervous, bro. You didn't want to do it. He didn't want to do it.
DJ Wells
First layup.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, you didn't want to be out there, is what I'm saying.
DJ Wells
No, I tried to win. The second time I did it, I was. I was trying to. Yeah, I was serious, horse.
Co-host / Commentator
I. I'll with that if you.
Fred VanVleet
I think people literally love this, and they.
DJ Wells
They.
Fred VanVleet
They care about it. So we talk about it. But, like, you look around, don't nobody else care about mlb, NFL, pro bos and joke. Like everything else. Everything else is just like h. When it comes to the All Star Game, it's just like everybody got something to say about it.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. Only thing that's. There's no mlb. Oh, yeah. Oh, they got CP in there.
DJ Wells
Oh, before. Now. I missed the layup, cuz. Kevin Hart gonna say before he said, hey, nigga, don't miss the layup. And what I do. Oh, you done now? This the one I was trying to win. Oh, yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
This is a different one.
DJ Wells
This one I was trying to win.
Fred VanVleet
What city is this?
DJ Wells
This might be New York.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, it's New York.
DJ Wells
Oh, damn. I wouldn't know.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Pastor bro went on for the assist. What the fuck.
DJ Wells
A long two. Long two. Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
What the hell?
Fred VanVleet
J.R. smith shots.
DJ Wells
Man, I don't know what year this was.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Oh, yeah? Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
Well, I'm saying they bullshitting, bro. It's 30 seconds, it's over.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. Cut this off.
Co-host / Commentator
Other than that, interviewing him for a week.
DJ Wells
Don't worry about it.
Co-host / Commentator
I shot.
Fred VanVleet
I shot my first three out the side of backboard.
DJ Wells
Three point contest. Damn.
Fred VanVleet
I was mad as. I was mad as, bro. Then I was hurt.
Co-host / Commentator
Was you nervous? What?
Fred VanVleet
I ain't never been nervous in my life. I'm talking, I'm. I'm doing my thing. I'm feeling good. I went to pick the ball up, bro.
DJ Wells
My.
Fred VanVleet
My biceps shrank, bro. I picked the ball up. I shot that out there. And from the corner off the side of backboard. I hit with my homie that morning. Cause they talked me into doing it. I didn't want to do it. Like, come on, bro. We all star, bro. You from Rockford do the three point contest.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Nobody from Rockford never made it to the All Star Game.
Co-host / Commentator
That's right.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Here we go.
Fred VanVleet
I'm like, all right. Oh, yeah, bro. I was so nervous. You got the only thing going on
DJ Wells
in the whole ring.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, bro. You hit a replay. My boy hit a replay on my ass. I did the practice upstairs. It's in Cleveland. So we did the practice gym upstairs. I broke a record. The dude was gassing me. Like, man, nobody never practiced like this before.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
You gonna do great.
Fred VanVleet
They got with me.
DJ Wells
You the only thing on the court, bro.
Fred VanVleet
I never been nervous like that ever in my life, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
It's a different kind of pressure, man.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
All Star Weekend, like you said, mlb, at least they put it to where the winning don't see a home field advantage in the World Series. I know that'd be crazy in the NBA if that happened. Cause a lot of people be pissed off.
Fred VanVleet
I think this year gonna be better, man. I'm hopeful. Cause it's la.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? We got a good mix. It's NBC. I hope this year is better. And I'm not going off of ratings. I'm not going off of none of that. I'm just going off like. All I care about is the vibe and the game.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
I don't even care about Saturday. I want the All Star Game to be something that people watch. Like, are they hooping?
DJ Wells
You know what?
Fred VanVleet
I'm trying to turn on the show
Podcast Host / Interviewer
and I think it will because like you said, concentrated efforts. Everybody's talking about it for years now. Even the players have been more vocal. So I think it'll be dope for sure.
DJ Wells
What was that like for you though? Making an all star team, hearing young the same car, bro.
Fred VanVleet
That was unbelievable, bro. Like, I still can't believe it, you know what I'm saying? I be laughing, y' all be talking about the one time all star shit. But like, like I was cool, you know what I mean? Like, it just came to the point where, you know my whole story up until that point, like, I thought I could do it. Cause a year before I averaged like 19 or something or 18 and I averaged 20. Some shit like that. Something in that range. And before the season, Nick Nurse was like, man, we might need you to score 24, 25 a night. I'm like, oh, I never had nobody tell me nothing like that. I always been like a play defense, get guys the ball.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
I'm like, oh, okay.
DJ Wells
They see it.
Fred VanVleet
So I'm hooping that year, you know what I'm saying? I'm like first option type. Pascal was hurt, but it was dope to come all the way down to that point. And then only what it up was, I got hurt. I hit my knee on the floor like a week or two weeks before all stuff. But I ain't tell nobody. Cause I ain't want to give up
Podcast Host / Interviewer
my spot out the gate.
Fred VanVleet
So I was limping around the whole weekend. So that part kind of ruined. And it was Cleveland, it was ass, it was cold.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
It was just.
Fred VanVleet
I didn't have a good experience. But like making it to the all star game and being in the locker room and it was the NBA 75 that year when they got the legends back. So like it was all of us and all of them. Like that's something that I never forget. I couldn't have never imagined nothing like that.
Co-host / Commentator
You know what I'm saying?
DJ Wells
You was there. Cause we had different people tell us about like when they said Michael Jordan name compared to everybody else, what was it like?
Fred VanVleet
So it's exactly what they said. Because you gotta think. I mean, you so like you got like the rehearsal. So like I said, we was upstairs, we was taking pictures and I was kind of like just chilling off to the side, like behind was watching everybody. I'm looking at AI, I'm looking at everybody. And everybody's in there. Everybody except for Mike. So like, you know, the chatter started, you know, like, oh, Mike ain't coming. He don't with us or he don't with them or you know, they got the old beef. They Got going on. So all the way down to they doing the intros, they walking out. You know what I'm saying? Nobody ain't seen him, so he. Nobody didn't see him until they called his name.
DJ Wells
Oh, that's crazy.
Fred VanVleet
Until he was walking out, right where he went.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Colin Coward
So it's.
Fred VanVleet
It was like the 75 was going crazy. The guys on the court was going crazy first.
DJ Wells
Damn, that's wild.
Fred VanVleet
So then when they called him out, it was like he was like the last one. You know what I'm saying?
DJ Wells
Hell, yeah.
Fred VanVleet
He different in that world. He different. That's what showed for me. Cause you know what the fans think, or, you know what I'm saying, Media, whatever. But for your peers, guys that's older than you, guys that's younger than you guys you played against. So respect him to be. Be the guy in that setting right there. I was like, damn, okay. That's different. That's what they be talking about.
DJ Wells
Yeah, he number one. That'll make you look at somebody.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, you, You.
Fred VanVleet
That's what they be talking about when they, like, ain't nobody with Mike. Yeah, I seen it in real life. You know what I'm saying?
Co-host / Commentator
For sure.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
But he told Magic, where your shoes at? Lace him up right now. That's what I need to do. All Star weekend. Isaiah Thomas versus MJ. That's what we need. Lin it up. The first one v1. MJ, Isaiah Thomas.
Fred VanVleet
I ain't gonna lie, though. Zeke ain't going. They gonna be banging, man.
DJ Wells
What?
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Zeke gonna fight. Cause he still hate.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
DJ Wells
Zek can still hate activists to this day.
Fred VanVleet
They gonna be banging.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
What was that moment like? Obviously, you was in Toronto. You had the cornerstones of the franchise with Kyle and demar. That trade happening, what was your first reaction to that?
Fred VanVleet
That shit was crazy. It was like, man, that was like my welcome to the business moment. You know what I'm saying? It was like, obviously, you had. Everybody had a welcome to the NBA, but that was the first thing. It was like, oh, this shit ain't no game. It's not aau. It's not college. Like, because I was with Demar in Vegas, and this when the rumors started coming out. And so basically the rumors started coming out, and then they was like, nah, it ain't true. So, like, I seen him and Masiah talking. I'm not, you know, whatever they talked about, they talked about. But, like, from seeing them talking at summer league till we had, like, a team dinner. Some teams do team dinners at summer league. They bring them Cause he had made all NBA the year before.
DJ Wells
Crazy.
Fred VanVleet
They bring him up in front of the whole team and like, hey, Demar, you know what I'm saying? All NBA, whatever it was, I forgot the specific award. And they like, yeah, next year, Demar, he gonna be playing defense and he gonna take another step and we gonna come back. And then shit was like, a couple days later, the trade came through. I'm like, damn.
DJ Wells
Wow. Yo. Crazy, isn't it?
Fred VanVleet
Crazy game, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
Wow.
Fred VanVleet
So imagine, you know what I'm saying, Just knowing him and how he.
DJ Wells
He felt.
Fred VanVleet
He got his own story how it went. But from my position, I was just like, damn. And then the flip side was, the first report was that Kawhi didn't want to come. That made it even worse. It was like we trading our man for somebody that don't even want to be here. This was the narrative at the time. But all that shit, it worked out.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Kawhi is the og.
Co-host / Commentator
It definitely did.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He's OG to dpu.
Co-host / Commentator
Nah, I'm sure that's the reason why I made it up because of him.
Fred VanVleet
And then at that point, I hadn't played against Kawhi, I think, but one time. That was my. My first two years because he was hurt. So I only played. I didn't see him.
Co-host / Commentator
We didn't either.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
So he ain't beers off and said his.
Fred VanVleet
I ain't know what we was getting, cuz he was going through the injury thing at the time. So like, I didn't know what we was getting. So I'm just like, man, damn. Demar is my brother.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Like, yeah, shout Debo.
Fred VanVleet
I'm saying, like, that's my dude. So I was up about that. And then Kawhi came and we was in training camp and I was like, okay, I get it, I get it. I know why they did it. You know what I'm saying? I'm a business. Makes sense.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
It was tough hearing you talk about it in your pod and stuff, which is funny. You were just like, I don't know why they traded for me, but fuck it, I'm here.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
And like, that was just the move. Cause you gotta think he really only talked to Kyle and maybe like Serge, you know what I'm saying? Here and there. But he's not a big energy, clearly. We see he cool though, in real life, he talk way more than what he do to the media. But like, if he come in the room and everybody in there, he not finna just be the class clown in the room. So I ain't really had that many conversations with him, but his whole thing was just like, shit. I told y' all before y' all traded for me. Like, I ain't. You know what y' all doing. But that make it even more impressive to me. Cause, like, he still came and did what he was supposed to do.
DJ Wells
He still came. Who he the first.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
First NBA player to get a one and done situation. Like, yeah, all right, I got y' all ring. All right, cool.
DJ Wells
I can't believe I wouldn't left. I don't know how he left, bro.
Fred VanVleet
It's him. He the only person in the history of the world that would have did that, bro.
DJ Wells
Only him.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, I would have left, too. He got to work from home for the Clippers. You see what he was on. He's like, bro, I live out.
Co-host / Commentator
He want to go all the way.
Fred VanVleet
You would have had to be there, bro. I'm talking about have a whole country, bro. Like, bound down like a whole country.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They say, we'll give you free rent, whatever you need.
Co-host / Commentator
How was that, though, winning that championship, cuz?
DJ Wells
Nah, don't do that. I can see it low. Oh, no, no, don't do it.
Co-host / Commentator
I don't want to talk about a Milwaukee buck, nothing. You don't got to worry about that, brother. You are not the only champion that came. Oh, God.
DJ Wells
I want
Co-host / Commentator
respect before we get.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Before we get to the ship. Y reaction with Kawhi hit that shot to get over the Sixers. That was crazy.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, I was jumping around like a little kid. Cause you gotta think I had a terrible series. Worst basketball of my life. So I was just happy we was getting more game.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
Like, I ain't wanna go out like that. My whole. I probably wouldn't even be sitting here the whole rest of my career would have been different if we lose that game seven. Because I didn't get hot till after that.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? I was shit. I was shit up until that point. So to see, like, you know, I'm on a bench. It was in front of our bench. To see. I'm like, oh, damn. Now I'm talking about. We all was just happy to get out of that series. Philly gave us a hell of a series. That was a tough team.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I know it's different times, but we talk about it. That was the Ben Simmons that we all grew to love. That Ben Simmons was cold. And B2, the Pro, they had a whip.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, he was different. Ben Simmons.
DJ Wells
Jimmy, come on, bro.
Fred VanVleet
Jimmy.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Jj.
Fred VanVleet
They had A mob. It was a big ass team. I think James Ennis was on that team.
DJ Wells
Yeah, they got a squad.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, that was a good team.
Co-host / Commentator
Kawhi was that deal, bro. He that deal.
Fred VanVleet
That's the best shit I ever seen up, like, in person. Like watching him not KD in the playoffs. I ain't seen the playoffs is different, you know what I'm saying? KD changed the way I view everything this year. Cause it's just like, it's so easy for him.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
And he really be chilling. Like, he don't like, do too much. He just wait. He can go a couple minutes without touching the ball. He won't say nothing. He gonna stand in the corner, morning.
DJ Wells
He ain't a thirsty hoop.
Co-host / Commentator
Nah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
DJ Wells
And then he.
Fred VanVleet
And he just don't miss, like. He don't miss.
DJ Wells
Who you think make it look easier, him or Shay? Katie?
Fred VanVleet
I think so, yeah.
DJ Wells
Shay shit looks so easy. Like, when I watch him play basketball. Yo, he not even sweating, bro.
Fred VanVleet
It does look.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
I think I'm only saying from the standpoint of 87ft tall, so, like, watching him shoot a midi over when that's crazy. He don't see Wimby.
DJ Wells
Nah, that's crazy.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? He don't see bodies, he don't see the help, he don't see the third guy. He don't touch the rim. Shay is special, though.
DJ Wells
That's kind of how I feel about Shay, though. Like, when I watch him, I feel like he don't see nobody. He gets to that midi, step back, he just.
Co-host / Commentator
It look like he out there by himself.
Fred VanVleet
He working out. He doing a workout.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
What?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, he doing a workout.
DJ Wells
He damn near shoe what, 60% almost.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah. Guard crazy. That's just insane.
Fred VanVleet
Petty just 37, so it's like.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
And it still look crazy.
DJ Wells
He's still the greatest scorer I ever seen.
Co-host / Commentator
1000%.
Fred VanVleet
It's like you just can't bother him. You know what I'm saying?
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
You can't make him do nothing he don't want to do. And it's every day.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
So you see KD in the finals, though. What was that like, actually making it to the finals? And then what was like playing in the moment you played to get some of the greats too, in that situation. And you got your shit off as well.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, no, it was a blessing. It was an opportunity. That's all you want. Just like have an opportunity to be there.
DJ Wells
And.
Fred VanVleet
And World State. Our hardest series was the Philly series. We went to Milwaukee. Milwaukee went down.02. And then we beat them four times in a row.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Light work.
Fred VanVleet
And then we go finals. KD was hurt. So we win game one easy. Like, I remember walking out, we were like, damn. We wasn't celebrating or nothing. We was walking out. We went in the locker room, it's like, damn, this shit's sweet. You know what I'm saying? Cause they was built to be with kd, without kd, we felt good. But, yeah, I mean, Steph Clay like, to be chasing Steph around. We playing boxing one and in the NBA Finals, and I'm.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm the one.
Fred VanVleet
You're the one chasing them around. Like, man, it was just an incredible opportunity. And, you know, being able to make the most of that was special.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, you got to get a ring against some of the greats, too. That's fire.
Colin Coward
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
And I, like, I always tell people, because they was like, oh, you guarded step so good. I'm like, bro, I'm playing the man of boss. And he still had 50 in the finals. Like, he gave me 50. Like, and I was in the boxing one, and we was trapping him every time, and he was out there by himself.
Co-host / Commentator
Oh, God.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying?
DJ Wells
Like, you said, the best you guarded.
Fred VanVleet
It's different. Kyrie is. Is different for me.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Because he like, go, Kyrie don't run no plays.
DJ Wells
You and him, he no, like, welcome to this island.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, he's not passing it. He might dribble it 27 times.
DJ Wells
Times. It's ugly.
Fred VanVleet
Like, I always after the game, like, I mean, need to see the chiropractor and, like, you know what I'm saying?
DJ Wells
Stop.
Fred VanVleet
Go, boom. Push off. Like, he. I love playing against Kyrie. He the most challenging for me. Steph is just like, you need. You need the whole full team because he running off all the screens, and you can't fall asleep.
DJ Wells
You can't at all. That's why I hated guards. Yeah. Because I like people who go one on one. I know where you gonna be. Gonna be at.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
DJ Wells
Like, when you start running around, I'm good as gone.
Fred VanVleet
I lost him one time, I think, in the finals. The whole time I was. I lost him one time, and he got a wide open 3. Every other time I was on him, I just looked for, like, two seconds. He was on the other side of the court. I'm like, damn, you can't even prepare
Co-host / Commentator
for no like that, bro.
DJ Wells
But, like. Like, I tell everybody the toughest person to guard was D. Rose. Like, how you feel about Kyrie. Yeah.
Colin Coward
Yeah.
DJ Wells
You knew where D. Rose was gonna be be at. And he wasn't doing 50 moves and it was no jumpers. It's like straight to the. To the rim. Like. Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
He's one of my favorite shout out to D legend who the easiest to go.
DJ Wells
See, I'm don't do that.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, I am. But I ain't going to lie though.
Co-host / Commentator
I be.
Fred VanVleet
I feel good out there, bro. Like now you be cooking the guy, the guys that, that, that y' all love, the guys that everybody love. I feel good against most of them, bro. My thing always came down to like, how I play. I wish I would have played more like how I play a pickup in the NBA. But the way I had to come in, I had to like go roll
DJ Wells
by roll by roll.
Fred VanVleet
You know what I'm saying? And I always prioritize winning over like my own shit.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Saying so. And I can't. I'm six feet, you know what I'm saying?
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, you did it the right way.
Fred VanVleet
Unathletic. I can't do that shit every night.
DJ Wells
That's what make it dynamic to me though.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, like.
DJ Wells
Cause you're not like super athletic athletic, but you create space and you get to where you want to go and you only six foot.
Co-host / Commentator
You strong in the.
Fred VanVleet
Oh, yeah, he's strong.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
But my boy, typical.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He went like Ringo Hans runs.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah. Like how I play like in the summertime and shit is just different. But when it's time to like match up against the top guards, it's like, that's what I like to do.
DJ Wells
Yeah, that's why.
Fred VanVleet
And I like to guard them too. We know you hurt now, but that's
DJ Wells
why we was like. I was so high on y' all team before you got hurt. Cause I believe in your competitive spirit. Like last year. Last year I'm like, rock gonna be straight.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, you did say that. Oh, God.
DJ Wells
But when y' all got KD like
Fred VanVleet
I was, that's what for.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
That me up. That was more so. Like, obviously I was up that I got hurt, but like, just the opportunity. Yeah. I'm saying the season he having, the season we having is we gotta fire this.
Co-host / Commentator
So they missing the shit outta you, bro.
Fred VanVleet
I just know what I be doing. You know what I mean? And then once you get to the end of the season, it's like you wanna rise to the. To the level too, so.
Co-host / Commentator
And you had all your year.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
For the most part, I mean, I'm pushing, but six months is crazy. Like nobody really come back in six months. But I mean, that's a lot to ask. You know what I'm saying?
DJ Wells
I ain't.
Fred VanVleet
I'm not ruling it out.

I'm not. That would be insane. It would be insane. I'm not even keep playing with people like, oh, I'm coming. But like it would be crazy. But I'm not ruling it out.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm saying that on the morning show every day.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
How many times you probably been traded on a morning show or been traded?
Fred VanVleet
Ruben.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I know that's probably annoying as hell, especially around the damn PG trade.
Fred VanVleet
No, y' all specifically trade.
DJ Wells
I traded.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
He don't send you Sacramento.
DJ Wells
I never send him a sack.
Co-host / Commentator
I never trade.
DJ Wells
I'm always la.
Co-host / Commentator
I don't want to talk about the rocks too much. You right here. But I never traded you because I think got a way for you to get healthy. Yeah, but if y' all were going to trade, get rid of some of the big stuff though and bring in somebody to fill the void to the top.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They got young Reed Shepherd. Team Teague alumni, baby.
DJ Wells
I fuck with Reed Young boy.
Co-host / Commentator
We ain't gonna talk too much about that though.
DJ Wells
He played on my 18 years little. For real.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
Damn.
Fred VanVleet
I like Reed Reed.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
You see his nickname they been calling Cocaine Curry.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, they gotta stop.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Clay was just like, hey, respectful. It should never be.
DJ Wells
Clay was nothing. I was about to start saying, okay, Curry.
Fred VanVleet
I ain't gonna lie. Clay was disgusted.
DJ Wells
He was like nobody.
Fred VanVleet
I hate when they do like that, man. It's bad. They did it this in Goon with Joker. Like, it just. It just. I seen that argument y' all had the other day.
DJ Wells
All Right. Are they in the same. Are they in the same building? Just from like same building? Yeah, not the same. Let's get the same same building.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Cuz he said him.
Co-host / Commentator
No, I'm not doing that.
DJ Wells
Wasn't.
Fred VanVleet
It was a city though, right?
DJ Wells
Yeah, he said. I said they in the same building. He said they not in the same. Same city.
Co-host / Commentator
And I ain't with your old dude.
Fred VanVleet
I think that we doing both of them a disservice by comparing them.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
There we go, Fred.
Fred VanVleet
That's what I say.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Two all stars, two killers.
DJ Wells
He is social, he is media trained.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, I think that. I think we both of them. And I told. And listen, Alfie is my dog. Like I talk to him. He talk to him like how like we talk.
DJ Wells
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
I tell him to his face. Like when they came with that Joker shot, I said, yo, stop. Stop doing that shit. For real. Like, stop doing that because first of all, you want your own name.
DJ Wells
Oh, God.
Fred VanVleet
Second of all, y' all really don't play nothing alike outside of the flashy shit, you know what I'm saying? He coming from the top of the key like a roll. He on some shit. But like, come on, bro. I just think Joker, it's crazy.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, bro, Joker one of the best.
Co-host / Commentator
Come on, this shit freaking. Fred, come say.
DJ Wells
He's saying something different though. I'm saying as far as I said,
Co-host / Commentator
they are nowhere near sick similar. They not besides other bullshit passing. I promise.
DJ Wells
I'm talking about the quality.
Co-host / Commentator
They dominate the game.
Fred VanVleet
I think what you, what you finished with was like, I think the ranking.
DJ Wells
Yeah, yeah, that's.
Fred VanVleet
That's y' all having, y' all having a different conversation. I think if you rank in the top bigs in the NBA, he belongs in that conversation.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's a fact.
Fred VanVleet
I just think the gap between 1 and 2 may be bigger than the gap between 2, 3, 4.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
I'm wrong.
Fred VanVleet
Like, he is like Joker. Joker is like a, like a all time great already top four big all time.
Co-host / Commentator
He can sit down and say, I don't want to play basketball no more. He's better than everybody we grew up watching.
Fred VanVleet
I've played him multiple times where he's had 30, 40 point triple doubles and the ball doesn't touch the rim. And this is, this is three midi, float, layup, free throw.
DJ Wells
Yeah, he like multiple times.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, bro, the ball don't touch the rim, bro.
DJ Wells
I, I get what y' all think. He all time young boy. Young boy just on the rise. I'm just saying, like he got to be a really good player.
Fred VanVleet
I've been bust his ass a couple times.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
That's a fact.
Fred VanVleet
So that's the beautiful thing about the game. Like, you still gotta lace them up. You know what I'm saying? But I would never compare them to.
DJ Wells
But the whole argument started because I kept saying, quit calling him Baby Joke.
Fred VanVleet
Yes.
DJ Wells
He got his own.
Fred VanVleet
He got his own. He was saying that he got his.
Co-host / Commentator
I hate them comparisons.
Fred VanVleet
It's just the flashy shit on him. But that's.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
But like you said, that Felipe, he was. He going at him.
Fred VanVleet
No, he off, too. Yeah, he nice. He a dog.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Y' all squad right now is crazy.
Fred VanVleet
Y'.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
All. Y' all got some killers over there.
Co-host / Commentator
Chance to win it.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Man. Thompson is one of the best athletes we've ever seen in basketball. He do something every night is just like that crazy special.
Fred VanVleet
Special.
DJ Wells
When he learned how to shoot, he going NBA just.
Fred VanVleet
He just now, like, adding, like, his reads, like, knowing where to pass, knowing where the help is coming from. Like, he just now adding that. Cuz that's a hard. A whole nother aspect to his game that he ain't really tapped into yet. And he got touched. He a dog and he work hard. He one of my favorite, favorite kids, bro.
DJ Wells
Like, let me ask you this. Like, being out, did it make you, like, obviously, you gonna play for another 10 years, right? Did it ever make you, like, damn, I could be a coach, too?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah.
DJ Wells
But, like, hell, no, I don't.
Boost Mobile Advertiser
Never.
Fred VanVleet
I think it's showing me that I don't want to coach.
DJ Wells
Okay.
Fred VanVleet
Cause, like, I be going home with headaches and shit after the game. You know what I'm saying? You know, like, it just only so much you can do.
DJ Wells
Yeah. Facts.
Fred VanVleet
I like to teach more than I like to coach. And I always knew, like, I would give back to the game somehow. So everybody's like, oh, man, you'll be a coach. I was like, bro, the NBA grind to do that shit for whatever, 10, 15, 20 years, and then like, go back to that again. Like, I got kids. Like, I don't. I just can't see it. But I would definitely be around the game in some cases, capacity.
DJ Wells
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
And I know I can do it. I'm doing it now.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
You know, that's why I was asking.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
I'm doing it in a lesser role. I don't want to disrespect our coaches, but, like, I'm helping them with the. In between.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Between the players. You know what I'M saying.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
So that's all I got Coach out
Co-host / Commentator
there on the court anyway.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, yeah. PG's.
DJ Wells
You automatically become a coach and you're
Co-host / Commentator
like, I could do it now.
Fred VanVleet
I told Rich and them, like, what, 10? So maybe I'll retire for five, six years. So 15 years a coach is making 20, 25 million a year. Y' all might see me out there out the gate.
DJ Wells
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Yelling, hey, I'll be assistant.
Co-host / Commentator
Give me 800,000.
DJ Wells
Damn.
Fred VanVleet
The money going up.
DJ Wells
Yeah, I'm saying, you give me 800, I come coach.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Cause you go.
DJ Wells
You go on the same trip. I'm back.
Fred VanVleet
You want to be back in the
DJ Wells
bench code, Give him the same thing.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, you gonna do practice.
Co-host / Commentator
Same hotels and everything.
DJ Wells
Yeah, they get that same treatment.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
We making the coaching staff right now. We got Fred, we got T. Evan Turner.
Colin Coward
Let's go.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
The clarion specialist.
Fred VanVleet
Yes.
DJ Wells
I gotta get Rondo.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Rondo head coach.
Fred VanVleet
I wanna see Rondo coach.
DJ Wells
I do, too. Rondo too serious, though.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah, y' all can't.
Co-host / Commentator
That's a hard transition.
DJ Wells
He sent, bro. He text me to play our team in high school next year with them. Like, yeah, we wanna play. Y' all. Like, what the fuck?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, he's smart as shit.
DJ Wells
Yeah. I'm like.
Fred VanVleet
It'd be hard sometimes for them. Some of them guys to coach, too, though. Y. Yeah, the game ain't. Ain't all about that either. Sometimes it's way more simple than you know what I'm saying? So I think sometimes them guys struggle. But he definitely should be on somebody's staff. He's special. He got a special basketball mind.
DJ Wells
Oh, he can sit, Definitely.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Hell, yeah.
DJ Wells
I like talking hoof with you, Fred, man.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, Fred. Fred, you got some shoe. Can't talk about.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, I respect, man.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm here, bro.
DJ Wells
When he retired, I want to have a conversation. When he retired.
Co-host / Commentator
You know how to dance.
DJ Wells
You know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
When I need him.
Co-host / Commentator
Well, you gonna do a parade?
DJ Wells
Like, though, I wanna know. Cause we make jokes about our parade all the time. What, we jump in?
Fred VanVleet
Yeah.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Real celebrations.
Fred VanVleet
Million people.
DJ Wells
That shit's crazy.
Fred VanVleet
I don't even know if, like, it's supposed to be that many humans in one place at one time. We started, first of all, we win in the Bay game. 6. Go crazy. Ain't shit going on in San Francisco. Jump on a plane to Vegas.
DJ Wells
He left on a plane.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
We saw all starkness in France.
Fred VanVleet
We go to Vegas for a day, two days. And then what happened was that's when Drake was running around with us. So like half the team went with Drake to la and then the other half went to Toronto. So like me, Pascal, Norm, some of the younger guys we did. We go back to the city. So we the first ones to the city. The other guys went to la. So we came and got the love first. So boom, we outside, we doing our thing. Couple days. Then we had the parade. And I just remember, like we had a drive. Drive. Like maybe it's like a 10 minute drive from you know, where we started to where we finished. That shit took like five, six hours.
DJ Wells
Damn.
Fred VanVleet
Cause it was just so many people outside. And then we started drinking and man, shit. Yeah, it was.
DJ Wells
It was.
Fred VanVleet
That's. That's like the most craziest thing I ever done. The parade that whole summer. But that parade was.
Co-host / Commentator
And we had a whole summer.
Fred VanVleet
Had a whole summer, bro.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Co-host / Commentator
Damn.
Fred VanVleet
Whole summer of run B Dots Toronto. I mean, you take the trophy like, yeah, you gonna run. You go back to Vegas for some of the. Run it back, run it back. Come back to the city. Yeah, you hear. You there, you everywhere.
DJ Wells
What's up, champ? Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
Fred VanVleet
Then like, my shit was even better. Cause like I went crazy in the fourth quarter of the game six. So it was like that shit was on people mind.
Co-host / Commentator
Yes.
Fred VanVleet
So now I'm lit. And then Kawhi don't go. No, I mean, he go places, but like, he ain't Kyler, man was more.
Co-host / Commentator
I'm Kawah.
Fred VanVleet
Yeah, I'm outside.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
So you're the face.
DJ Wells
Yeah, I ain't getting none of that. Damn.
Co-host / Commentator
Damn.
Fred VanVleet
What like you.
DJ Wells
You was on the team. Oh, okay.
Co-host / Commentator
Your clip. Your clip still going viral.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Add a group project.
Co-host / Commentator
They play. They play before the playoffs start, yo.
DJ Wells
No, they don't.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, they do. You n. What you walking through the hall.
Fred VanVleet
Though. It's like you act like you a play.
DJ Wells
You playing.
Fred VanVleet
He did play in the final.
DJ Wells
Him playing in the final like three minutes now.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They been on that.
DJ Wells
Look it up. He played, bro. I think I missed like six shots.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
They been on that with him Twitter. Did you see they put all his shots in the finals?
DJ Wells
Yeah,
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Playing six games. You got respect. You got minary. Game 20, 21.
Fred VanVleet
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, Jeff. Cause I'm g. Help you out here. 21 when you came in the league 2009. So you played. Yeah, come on, bro.
Co-host / Commentator
No, I think we had a hell of a crew. We. How many since they been care if
Fred VanVleet
I'm doing this in my. Because you Retired.
DJ Wells
Yeah. Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
He was like, come on, bro.
DJ Wells
My meniscus was gone.
Co-host / Commentator
We gonna keep it real, cuz. See, they don't ain't with him no more. He wasn't supposed to be there. That didn't have no knees, bro.
DJ Wells
Yeah, my meniscus was gone.
Co-host / Commentator
Yeah, he got signed off the L.
DJ Wells
That's my dog.
Co-host / Commentator
That's what I'm saying. That's.
DJ Wells
No, I was good. I tore.
Co-host / Commentator
No, you could hoop.
DJ Wells
I'm saying, like, I tore with Milwaukee. You remember, I was in Boston. I had came up, I got out here playing one on one with Jordan or wow.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Louis Legend gone.

Co-host / Commentator
Get the chance to get to him. You know what I'm saying? Cuz, I don't play about my. But I'm just saying it's that year, bro. It's. Y' all had a different finals experience on and off.
Fred VanVleet
I mean, yeah, 1,000%.
DJ Wells
That's.
Fred VanVleet
That's just like. Just going from Toronto to Milwaukee. You just start there.

A lot of first options. I know the league's a little bit different now. The rookies get to do whatever they want to, but how's it been? Obviously, you've been observing the games and stuff like that, man.
Fred VanVleet
I like it. I think this is one of the better classes that we done had just from guys, that's really. You could see what they gonna be right away.
Podcast Host / Interviewer
Yeah.
Fred VanVleet
Cause and then a couple of these drafts we had top picks come in and be role players or come off the bench and don't play and you know, shit like that. That is weird. Cause that's not what we grew up on. Usually when you get drafted, you know, they try to make you like a franchise guy. So to see the young guys this year, I mean it's a lot of good players in this draft. And then obviously everybody's looking forward to next year. But I'm looking at this year like shit. I mean they got some at least six, seven, eight of them, you know what I mean? A whip of a really guy that's contributing on winning teams. You got Queen. You got the kid from Memphis. Memphis, yeah.

The crew breaks into debates about today’s top players, the G League/college pipeline, and what’s gone wrong—and what might fix—the NBA’s All-Star and Dunk Contests.

This episode delivers an unfiltered window into the NBA through one of its hardest-working success stories. Fred VanVleet reflects on the lessons and grind behind his ascent—from Rockford to the ESPN highlight reels, from undrafted to NBA champion, All-Star, and players’ leader. The crew explores how NIL reshapes college ball, what it takes for a guard to make (and stay in) the league, why defense and hunger still matter, and how today’s culture and NBA business shape every step. The show closes with Fred’s optimism for this generation, candid reflections on his future, and a celebration of what made the Raptors’ Finals run legendary.
