Better yet, three wins have come against AP Top 25 teams, the first time in Vandy history. And here he is, a large part of that, the reason why the Vanderbilt Commodore of has success, the quarterback, Diego Pavia. Diego, what's going on, bro? You mute? You mute? You muted.
D
My bad, my bad.
E
What's up, y'? All? I appreciate y' all having me. I got some people in the background though, they want to say what's up?
A
All right, what's up? What you got? Hey, that's what's up. How you doing, man? Yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, Chad. Hey, I need some feet. I need some feed drills.
D
Chad.
A
Yo, yo, OG well, bro, we appreciate you after a big win like that, we know normally you'll be out probably celebrating with the boys, but we appreciate you giving us some of your time.
E
Honey, you know the party don't start till after 12, so we're all okay.
A
That's what's up then. That's what's up. So that's. You can't be there when the party start. You got to walk in, let them know you there.
E
Now, dp, now we're thinking alike, huh?
A
When? This season. Look, after last year, what you were able to do, you beat Alabama for the first time in forever. And so now you set expectations coming into this season. What were the expectations for you and this ball club?
E
Well, we set out in January that we want to win the national championship. We feel like we're the best team in college football still. Our defense is really good, our offense is good, and our special team is good. So we just put those three together. Shoot, you know what it is.
A
And you, you, the way you've been playing, you, you kind of caught people by surprise last year, but the way you played last year, so you know the expectations coming in this year, you're supposed to improve on last year's production. How have you been able to stay even keel? Don't get too high, don't read the press, the Internet, the press clippings, and let everybody pat you on the back and tell you how great you are. You stayed really level headed, but you've played Exceptional.
E
Well, this year, coming into this year, a lot of people were like, man, Diego's figured out he's washed, he ain't got it. You know what I mean? Real, real. That's what they were saying. Yeah, yeah, come show me. Come show me I ain't got it. Come show me you got me figured out. But shoot, I think the most important thing though, is we're a team. Like, we all got each other six. That's how it is.
A
I like that.
C
Hey, you're confident. Where you from originally?
E
Albuquerque, New Mexico. They call it Alba Crazy New Mexico, though.
C
Yeah, I like it. With the confidence you have. Not only the way you play, the way you speak, the way you carry yourself, the way you walk, you move your aura, you move like you him. Where does that confidence come from? Especially at the quarterback position? Most of the time it's frowned upon. They want to be buttoned up and say all the right things. But I like your style. I like your style. And do you think once you get to the next level, please tell me you will remain the same way you are now.
E
I'mma be the same killer I've always been. I've been doing this shit since Juco, you feel me?
A
When no one believed in me.
E
No, I like it. I. I was a. A negative star. You ever seen one of those?
A
Yeah.
C
I like it, I like it.
A
But the thing is, I'm looking at your numbers. I mean 29, 10 to 19, and 129. You didn't have the greatest day, but you found a way when the rubber needed to meet the road. When you need a. It's 10, 10 and it's, it's four minutes in the ball game and we got to go down and get a touchdown. Cuz we gonna put pressure on you. We don't want you to kick no field goal. We want you to come down against our defense and have to get a tub. Cuz I'm gonna get this in the end zone. I hey, hey, don't. We gonna get this ball when I throw it, you catch it. When I hand it to you, just hold on to it. Cuz we gonna get this ball in the end zone and we gonna put pressure on them to make them go down and get a touchdown against our defense. And.
E
I, I was just in the huddle and we came off the timeout and the first play was supposed to go to me and then they changed it up and gave it to seti SETI got it, got it close or whatever. And I knew that next play, I knew I knew that was going to me, so I was like.
A
Hey, so let me ask you this. They throw the Hail Mary and the guy catches it because the officials at first said no good, but they review it and then, look, he caught it, but he was at the 1 1.
E
I was like, oh, we going overtime. And the crazy thing is, is that we went into overtime with them last year too, but the score was 2020, so it was like. I was like, oh, this coming over. But it was going to swing our way this time, you know.
A
Right, right. So now look, you're. You're, you're seven and one. There's still a chance you guys can get to the, the SEC Championship game. You go to the SEC Championship game, anything can happen. You know, you win the sec, you go into the College Football Playoff. That's the one thing we know. Whoever moving forward from now until perpetuity, if you win the SEC Championship, you gonna be in the College Football Playoff. So now how do you remain? How do you keep this team focused? They're like, look, guys, we really haven't accomplished anything yet. Yeah, we're seven and one and we're happy. And the words of young thug, whoop did do, whoop did do we 7 and 1. But now I'm trying. How do I get to be 8 and 1? What, so what's your message? What's going to be your message to your teammate? Obviously, you're going to enjoy the win. You get 24 hours to enjoy a win.
E
Yes.
A
What is going to be your message to your team on Sunday?
E
Well, I think a lot of guys broke up with their girlfriend, so they're hungry themselves.
D
Real, real.
E
Junior just broke up with his girlfriend, so he's hungry, he said, feeding the ball, you know.
A
Okay, that's what's up.
E
A lot of guys don't got girlfriends right now on the team, so I think that motivates us. But I think going into this next game, it's taking one game at a time. Like, Texas is a good team. They won tonight in a critical time, and we'll see them at home. Dude, we're really excited just to get another opportunity to play, though. Our defense is playing lights out. Our old line, they were, they were coming up to me after the game and they're like, yo, bro, sorry, sorry, sorry. And I'm like, dude, we won. You know, but they just want to play better and just like become so dominant. Like, that's just the expectation of just being a Vanderbilt football player now is just being dominant. Like, not, not these Little marginal wins. It's, it's going out there and just laying it all on the line, you know.
A
How have you been able, how have you been able to stay levelheaded? Obviously, look, Vanderbilt, the program is not one, it's not Alabama, it's not one of these perennial powerhouses, but you're turning it into that because Johnny Manzel put Texas A and M back on the map. It was. Now when they think of Texas A and M and they've had good players come out of Texas A and M, but Texas A and M now is the house where they play. Cow Field is the house that Johnny built. Now you're that guy. You're the guy that's putting Vanderbilt football back on the map. So how does, how does Diego Pavia stay levelheaded and like you know, you the is, you know that, you know, I be you like. Damn, what's that smell? Oh, that's me, cuz. I'm the dookie. That's me. That's me. So, so how do you, how do you stay level headed to make sure that you don't get too far in front of yourself?
E
Well one, I do yoga every Monday. That makes me come like, and just like come back to earth, you know. And then on Tuesday after practice, I do a lot of grounding. I'll ground for like an hour and that usually after that it's like our full reset. I'm good to go, ready for Saturday.
A
That's what you gotta do. So what a party at tonight?
E
Have you ever heard of the street called Broadway?
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
E
What are we talking about, huh?
C
Okay, okay, I like it.
A
Hey, quiet camp, Ocho. Nashville like that?
E
Ocho, you haven't been, you haven't been here.
C
I've been to Nashville once. I've been to Nashville once.
E
Hey, but listen, you must like black girls.
C
Listen, hey, dp, this is the thing. I'm one that I don't party. I've never had alcohol before. I don't drink. I don't do anything. I don't go to clubs. I like jazz, I like cigars. So I'm really not the fun guy you would like to hang with. And I play video game 24 7, so I'm really boring.
E
My boy CB too, he don't drink. He don't do any of that either. He still has a good time on Broadway. Broadway is a place for everyone, I'll tell you that right now.
A
Yeah, yeah. Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah.
C
Hold on. Is that an invite?
A
Is that an invite?
E
That's an Invite. That's an invite. We have two more home games. This is an invite for both of you guys to come out and show out.
C
Hold on, I. I come. Can I, can I can, Can I come on the field?
E
Do dogs bark?
C
Hey, I'm. I be.
E
You might be able to put a helmet on you ask. Ask Theo.
C
You still got some.
A
How much time you got left available?
C
Hey, Theo, what's up? What's good?
A
What's up, bro? Man, how you been?
E
Good.
A
See this guy, you feel me?
C
Hey, I got you. Make sure you there.
A
Have a fresh cigar right there on the salon for you.
E
Hey, ask. Ask Theo Vandy over here. They even let you like blow the whistle for like the start of the third quarter or whatever, huh?
A
Bro, when I first, they got more recruits here now. When I first came, the first game, they had probably six recruits on the sidelines. They had one dude in a wheelchair.
D
He was a recruit.
A
And I'm like, what is he gonna do? But they said we might need him. I said, the Lord need he.
D
Just.
A
Give him some rest. But now today they had like 150 recruits, man. It's wild. It's different. Yeah. Hey, man, Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt turning up. They turning up.
D
So.
A
Hey, Diego, what? I mean, you got it. You gonna have any more eligibility left after this year?
E
Yeah, I think I got like 14 or 16 years in the league.
C
Hey, just.
A
What's up?
E
Hey, just sign me up. I'll win you a few of these. You feel me?
A
That's what's up. Hey, man, Diego, man, that's unbelievable, man. So I get. See, now you with the guy. Cause Theo is from in Nashville. So you just go with Theo. So everything just open up. This is the guy down there to Nashville, man. Damn.
C
Hey, wait, what you. I'm. I'm going. Nashville is an hour and 30 minute flight.
E
Where you at?
C
Damn, I live in Miami.
E
No, no, we might have to visit you. We might have to visit you.
A
Bring some of them white girls with you. If y' all sparing any. I know y' all like to keep them. Yeah, you know he's selfish. You know he's selfish.
E
Both of them.
A
No. Nah. Hey, I was gonna come. I was gonna come, but I can't come now because. Y' all ready? Yeah, yeah. Listen. Hey, I'm on probation.
C
Hey, hey, Uncle. Hey, hey, hey.
D
Dp.
A
Uncle.
C
Uncle's on probation and I'm married. I'm married. I'm married. I'm married.
D
Oh.
A
I might be able to come, but since you're gonna be going out I. I. Unfortunately, I'm not gonna be able to join you, Diego. I'm sorry.
E
Leave you guys at the. At the jail cell with my brothers or whatever.
A
Appreciate you. Hey, Diego, appreciate your time, man. Best of luck. Stay healthy. And, man, hey, we look. I love watching you every single week, watch you do your thing, man. Appreciate it.
E
I appreciate you guys. That's love, man. I'm gonna catch you guys. I'll see you here.
F
Yeah.
E
Hey, Shannon, let's see it. We'll see both of y'.
D
All.
A
All right.
E
All right. All right, bro.
A
Appreciate you, man. Appreciate you. Hold on, Ocho. Hey, is it 26 already?
C
Hey, he live.
A
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You could take. Oh, yeah. He all the way live.
C
He live. You. You know what it remind me of? This is my first time meeting him. Just the interaction and the way he carries himself.
A
He's very different.
C
Hey, he remind me like, Like Scatterbo, but playing quarterback. Yeah, I. I like him.
A
Oh, you. Oh, he all the way live.
C
I. I like him.
D
Oh, yeah.
A
Oh, he. No, no, he live. Live like the Joker, like the Joker said in the first batwad. Oh, we got a live with here. Yeah, he all. He all the way. 1,000.
C
Hey, hey, listen, that. That is the kind of quarterback I want to play for.
A
Oh, yeah?
C
That the type of dude you want to play for? Like that, man, that. Hey, un. That's good energy, boy. That's good energy. It's different. It's different than what a quarterback is supposed.
A
Yes.
C
Like, yes, it's different. It's authentic. It's raw. Pause.
A
I can see why. I can see why. I can see why Johnny gravitated towards him. Johnny sees, and I told you at the beginning, Johnny sees a lot of himself in him now.
C
I get it. And we're not talking just. We not just talk about on the field either. No, I like good energy.
A
Johnny. Johnny, you know, Johnny got an opportunity to know him outside of the football, outside of the field. Yeah. Okay. They're height and they kind of play similar, but their personalities and, and. And. And the confidence that they exude that they. That they. They instill in their teammates. Yeah, I see why. I. I really see why now.
C
That was dope. That was really dope.
D
That was dope.
A
Yeah, that was. He was. He got bond. Ah. They won Charleston Southern. They beat Virginia Tech. They beat South Carolina. They be Georgia State. They be Utah State. Lost to Alabama. Beat number 10, LSU at the time. Beat number 15, Missouri at the time. They got Texas and Auburn. Kentucky. They got Texas on the road. Auburn at home, Kentucky at home, and then they finish up the season in state rival Tennessee. Oh man, it's, it's, it was, it's. I said you got the eligibility say yeah, 14 to 16 years in NFL. That's what my eligibility.

Oh, we got a very special guest. The director, Black Panther. The director of Creed.
C
Yeah.
A
He's a recipient of four NAACP Image Awards. He's been nominated for two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and the Grammy. He's the director. As I mentioned, Black Panther and Creed. He has a new movie that's coming out in April called Centers. Here he is, Ryan Coogler. Ryan, how you doing, bro?
D
I'm happy to be with y', all, bro. I'm happy that you're with us, man. I'm feeling good, bro. Like, big fans of y' all coming up. I used to play. I used to play football. Not. Not as well as y', all, but.
A
But.
D
But big, big fans of y' all there. And then. And then watching y' all transition, man, it's been. It's been beautiful, bro. Like, it's. It always warms my heart when I see. When I see athletes prolong that career. You know what I'm saying?
A
Well, let me. Well, let me ask you this, Ryan. Okay? You want. You, like. You play football. Did you have professional or collegiate aspirations?
D
Absolutely, bro. Yeah, Absolutely, bro. I used to play with Marshawn.
A
Okay. Beast mode.
D
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We from the same neighborhood, so.
C
Okay.
D
You know, I played him, Played against him in Pop Warner high school and college. Yeah, I played at Sacramento State, so. Ocho, bro, we both played for the same coach, man. You remember coach Steve Mushagan?
C
Hey, Coach Moose.
D
Yeah. Coach Moose got me my scholarship at Sacramento State. Oh, yeah, look, that's me scoring a touchdown on Davis right there. On UC Davis. Yeah.
C
Oh, that's lying.
A
You a wide receiver, Ryan. I was.
D
I played slot. I was.
A
You cooking. You cooking them?
D
Not like y', all, bro. But I pay for school. You know what I'm saying? You feel me? Yeah. They are go, yeah, that's dope, man.
C
Hey, Coach Moose is good, man.
A
So let me ask you this, okay? You go to college, you have a nice little college career. When did you decide to say, you know, what film is going to be the direction that I go in?
D
Yeah, bro, it's a great question. So. So I got my first scholarship to a school called St. Mary's College. It's known as a basketball school, but we had. We had. We used to have a football team. And then I dropped the program after my freshman year.
A
Okay, I played.
D
I played quite a bit that season. Like, I. I was returning. I was returning kicks, you know, I was always playing. I was playing Rasheed. I played a little bit of DB that year, and so I got some more scholarship offers. But while I was there, it was a woman named Rosemary Graham who taught a creative writing class, and she read something I wrote, and she was like, hey, man, you should think about writing screenplays, you know, My girlfriend at the time, she's now my wife, she bought me a little software that I could write screenplays, but I fell in love with it, man. So by the time I transitioned to Sacramento State, I was doing it on the side, taking writing classes and shooting short films with my homies, you know? And then I applied to film school in 2007. It's crazy, bro, because we was in. I was doing real well going into my senior year. And I got an injury doing 7 on 7 where I walk on a cat was trying to walk on. The team was over eager, and he. He caught me on a post and broke my zygomatic arch right here. So it was. It was. I was eight weeks off where I couldn't lift, I couldn't do anything. And during that time, I realized, like, I need to put this application in for film school, man. Football is fleeting. You know what I'm saying? So I applied to USC film school, and I got accepted. I found out I got accepted, like in the middle of the season. And right around that time, man, I started to find myself. My mind wondering when I'll be on.
A
The field thinking about something else.
D
I'm thinking about a movie I want to make. I'm thinking about being on set. You know, that shit is dangerous when you're doing that. You have to be football. You gotta be all in. And that was kind of when I knew. You know what I mean?
A
Right.
C
That's dope, man. I want to talk. Listen, I'M a movie head. I enjoy films. I enjoy the arts and the crafts of it. I enjoy getting lost in character. I get very passionate when I talk about stuff like this. So I watched the trailer for Sinners, and to me, it seemed like a unique blend of supernatural action mystery and psychological theater. How did you approach this genre in and bending concept, and what was it about this story that made you want to tell it? Man?
D
That's a beautiful question, man. So. So. So I had an uncle who was from Mississippi. You know, I'm from Auckland, but I had an uncle who was from Mississippi. And he was like the oldest member of my family, the oldest male member of my family, you know what I'm saying? So whenever I kicked it with him, he want to listen to all blues records and drink all Tyler whiskey, you know what I'm saying? And he passed away while I was working on Creed in 2015. And I never really, really reckoned with. With his passion, you know what I'm saying? I would. I would put blues records on to think about him. And that was how I got the idea finished, man. Like, you know, coming off. Coming off a Black Panther, it was a real long movie that we kind of Ferrell and we dealt with a lot of tragedies, a lot of. A lot of misfortune dealing with the COVID situation. So for me, I wanted to make something that was quick, but also something I was. That was very much very unique, very profound, you know what I'm saying? Like. Like in. And I wanted to play in a genre rock and incorporate music, but I also wanted to make something that was a little bit. That was a little scary, man, because, you know, black folks, we like that, you know what I mean? We like theater and talking at the screen, you know what I'm saying? Something that get him here. Exactly, bro. Exactly. You know, I think we have some incredible filmmakers that have capitalized on the medium, you know what I'm saying? Like, you think of Jordan.
A
Jordan Peele. Get out.
D
Yeah, yeah. But Spice done his thing in that genre, near the Costas and everything in that genre, you know, So I was fired up about it, bro. And, you know, truthfully, bro, like, it was a chance for me being a product of the great migration, you know what I'm saying? Being born and raised on the west coast, get back to the south and embrace that, you know what I'm saying? Embrace that part of my ancestry, you know what I mean? I had the most amazing time making this movie, bro.
C
How long?
A
How long?
D
I'm just curious how long does it.
C
Take to make a movie in general? I don't mean this one in specifically, but I'm just saying in general, what's the timetable?
D
Like, that's a great question. So this one we made relatively quickly, but they go from. They can go from anywhere from two to four years, you know. That's what he was able to make in one year. Yeah, yeah. It's essentially, bro. It's essentially like imagine. Imagine a season, season and a half of football, you know what I mean?
A
Because it takes you six months to shoot. Six months to a year to shoot it. And then you have to edit it. It takes you another six months to a year to edit it, Correct?
D
Yeah, man. And that's not including writing the script, because I write the script too, Right. Sometimes you gotta shop the movie around, you know what I'm saying?
A
Right, right.
D
You know, so I can tell you how long my movies all took. So this is my fifth movie that I wrote and directed.
C
Okay.
D
Fruitville Classic.
C
Classic, man.
D
Right on. That's crazy. I said that, man. But it took me about a year to make that one. Okay. You know, Creed, we shot that we started, so Creed. Creed was about a year and a half, you know, like in a half of that year, was just trying to convince Stallone that it was worth doing, you know what I mean? And rightfully so, you know what I mean? He wanted to make sure that we were serious about it and make sure that it would work for him.
A
And.
D
And then we shot in January. We put the film out in, like November. That was a fast one. Black Panther Took about two years. Started working on it in 2016, put it on in 2018. Black, you know, Wakanda Forever was like. Was like a four year movie, you know what I'm saying? Because I wrote one script, you know what I'm saying? Chadwick passed away. I didn't even know he was sick. So I had to rewrite that. We got going. The pandemic slowed it down quite a bit. And then my lovely actress got injured, so we had to shut down for a little bit, you know what I mean? And then we put that one out. So I wanted to make something fast after that, you know, Four years on one movie, you feel me? But I was blessed, man, to be able to make something that I'm so proud of, man, like super, you know, really proud of this, man. I can't wait to show it to y'. All. I think y' all gonna dig it, man.
C
Listen, I know I'm gonna dig it when you watch the trailer for me, when it comes to anything that you do, whether you're an athlete, you have to be a special athlete that puts butts in the seats. When you're a comedian, you have to be a comedian that has stage presence to always keep the crowd engaged. When I watch the trailer and it catches you. When it catches you right away, I don't know who did the editing. I don't know who did the trailer, but I'm telling you right away, it catches you and it keeps you and it holds you, and then it's like it's an appetizer. But it ain't enough. It ain't enough because I want to. I want to see what's next. But so now I can't wait to see it. And it just. I'm very passionate and enthusiastic when it comes to movies, bro. I've been a fan of yours for a long time. All your work, everything you've done. That's why I can't shut up right now.
D
I'm gonna tell you something crazy, Ocho, for real, bro. I'm gonna tell you something crazy. We met before, bro.
A
For real.
D
We met at the Tribeca Film Festival. It was the first film festival I ever got into. Spike did a movie called Kobe doing work, and ESPN had the world premiere of it, bro. And I saw you in there, and I went over there and shook your hand, bro. You know what I'm saying? Just on the strength, you know, just being a fan of what you do on the football field. I was a student of the game, bro. You know what I'm saying? Like, what y' all was doing, bro, over there in Cincinnati, man, when it was you and TJ and the boys, bro.
C
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
D
You know what I'm saying? Hey, like, just the precision of the route running, bro, the confidence, you know what I'm saying? Both of y' all had that. Both y' all had the mental game, too, bro. I remember. I remember. I remember Shannon, bro, when he used to be mic'd up. Oh, bro. You know what I'm saying?
A
Appreciate that.
C
Appreciate that.
A
Study your movies. A lot of your movies, you got Michael B. Jordan now. Michael B. Jordan in this role. He plays a dual role. He's stacking because I'm like. I was like, hold on. That look like this. This look like Michael B. Jordan playing both of these. Both. I said, come on down. Hold on. So I had to rewind and look even close. I said, it is. So what is it about Mike that you love casting him in Your movies, if I'm not mistaken, he was in Fruitvale. He was in Fruitvale, too.
D
Yeah, he been in all of them. Look, bro, like, what you'll find is chemistry, man. You know what I'm saying? It's a head coach and a quarterback. It's a quarterback and a receiver. You know, like, you develop a shorthand where you save time, you know what I'm saying? You establish a tone for the rest of the crew. And we're not the first ones to do it, man. Usually when you see. When you see filmmakers work, they usually have Denzel.
C
Yeah.
D
Oh, yeah, man. I mean, big time. Spike and Denzel, Tony Scott and Denzel.
A
Yep.
D
You know, Scorsese had a. Had a thing with De Niro and then Caprio. He rekindled it with Leo. Exactly. You know, it's helpful, man. And Mike has a. You know, Mike. Mike has a. Has a very amazing work ethic. You know what I'm saying? Like, he. Like, he's always willing to go, always trying to push himself. He doesn't want to rest on his laurels, you know? And I can rock with that, bro. So. So, you know, I'll put him in. I'll put him in every movie if I can. He'll always have a. He'll always have a role if I'm. If I'm working, You know what I mean?
A
Let me ask you this, right? How did you. How did you come up with the name Sinners? Why the name Sinners?
D
That's a great question, bro. We found that late, man. Like, for a long time, the movie was just called Grilled Cheese. It was a work. It was a working title.
A
Yeah.
D
Like, so if you put up in Louisiana Louisian, you know, this past summer and said, hey, man, we're grilled Cheese shooting at. They would have brought you. They would have brought you to our movie.
A
Okay.
D
You know, and the story behind that name was I'd been cooking these long. These long, drawn out, crazy meals. I wanted to make something quick and fast I knew would taste good, you know what I'm saying? So that's how we came up with that. But for Sinners, you know, it was a collaboration between us and the studio trying to figure out the right name for the movie. And we realized that line, you know, that word was said so many times throughout the script. You know, it deals with blues music and its relationship with the church. You know, Like, a lot of times, the best blues singers will come from gospel. You know what I'm saying? You'll learn that a lot of times they daddies was pastors, you know what I mean? And they singing music about drinking and bumping and grinding. And it's in conflict with how they was raised, you know what I'm saying? So that dynamic was one that we were really. Once we realized, it was like, oh, man, that was always a name. It should always been called that, you know?
A
But this movie. But trust no one. Because this movie has a lot to do with paranoia.
D
Absolutely, bro. Like, I mean, look, it's. It's, you know, it's dealing with. It's dealing with black culture, you know, And. And. And a lot of folks don't know that. Like that. That I know. I would argue that blues music is the most important contribution that America has made to global pop culture, you know what I'm saying?
A
Everything originated off of that.
D
Everything comes from that. And when you do the research, it really came from this one specific area of Mississippi, you know what I mean? At that time, when blues was created, it was very hard. It was a very hard place to be black, you know what I'm saying? And people were trying to. People were trying to affirm that humanity, affirm that dignity at a time when it was very difficult. And people were trying to keep them separate. Right. You know what I mean? And for me, that experience kind of breeds a level of paranoia, you know what I mean? When you can't be all after. After the dark in certain towns where you gotta, you know, where you. Where you know, where everybody knows everybody. So when somebody new shows up, you know what I'm saying? Or somebody who's been gone a long time, you know, it's a little. It's a little bit of, you know, you might look at them a certain way, you know. I mean, how did y' all come up, man? Did y' all come from places where everybody knew everybody? You could tell an outsider at the job.
A
I'm from a small town. There was 3, 500 people with two traffic lights. We pretty much knew everybody. Now, obviously, there were people that would come back from New York or Chicago or Detroit that I wasn't familiar with. But I knew their family. And after a while, they end up staying. So we were cool with them. Also, you said something very interesting because everybody talks about the Mississippi Delta, the Delta blues.
D
Yes, sir.
A
This film. This film deals with a lot of brotherhood, loyalty, fate.
D
Yes, sir.
A
You did a great job of working it and putting all that together. And it came together from the trailer for what I saw. I'm gonna go. I haven't been to the movie. I haven't been to the movie since the Pandemic. I'm gonna go check this one out. I'm interested to see how you tie this thing all together. Now, I saw the two minute trailer, but I want to see you tie this thing together for 90 minutes.
D
Yeah, yeah. I mean, I mean, I'm proud of it, man. And like, look, another reason I think you're gonna, you gonna dig it, man, is your relationship with your brother Sterling, bro. You know what I'm saying? Like, whenever I hear y', all, whenever I hear y' all talk, I gotta imagine in y' all neighborhood, y' all was known. You know what I mean? Like, like, you know, like in, in that. So these twins, you know, it's Stack and Smoke. Yeah, Smoke and Stack. It's an archetype, right? Like, every neighborhood I was, I ever been in had a set of twins that everybody knew. That was kind of notorious, you know? You know what I'm saying?
E
Yeah.
D
And we, we plan on that, that, you know, that relationship between the brothers, man, what makes them similar, what makes them different? No, I think Mike just did a beautiful job with it, man. I think you're really going to enjoy anybody who got that type of relationship, you know what I'm saying? Got a big brother, got a little brother, you know, gonna really feel this movie, I think, on a different level.
C
I like it. I got one more question, man. After creating something like this, something that's so bold, so different, and you know, you're pushing boundaries with most of your work and your craft. And again, I'm. I'm gonna tell you, I'm a harp on it because I've never had a chance to actually tell you. Now I do. I'm gonna make sure I let you know I'm a huge fan of everything you've done and I'm really, I'm really, really excited for this. But do you see yourself continue to push boundaries with more genre films or just. I don't want to be too nosy, but what's next? We got another creed coming. If we do got another creed coming, I want to shoot my shot real quick.
D
Oh, yeah.
C
I could be like the final boss.
D
Yeah, we got, we got, we got another creek coming for sure. Oh, let me, let me, let me. Yeah, Mike's going, Mike's going to direct that. So. So, yeah, like, like, you know, absolutely, bro. Like, I think, I think we love to make something happen for you. And the other, the other piece for me is like, you know, I want to work a Long time, bro. I want to make all types of stuff, man. And I do love working in the genre space. This is my first. This is my first, like, movie with out and out horror elements. And Brock, I'll tell you, it's very addictive, you know what I'm saying? Like, the idea. The idea of doing something else that isn't this much fun, it kind of frightens me a little bit, man. Like, you know, so, so, so. But we'll see, man. We'll put this out to the world and see how people respond, and then we'll go from there.
A
But.
D
But I'm definitely. I'm definitely not closing the door on doing more genre work. For sure, man. It was just too much fun. Ocho, for real.
A
Right, Right.
D
Yeah.
A
But you know what, Ryan? When I look at it and I think about, like, you did Fruit Veil, you've done Creed, you've done Black Panther. Now you're in this genre. It's kind of like Spike, because Spike has kind of been all over the place. Yeah, he's done Malcolm X, he's done Hurricane, he did Devil in Blue Dress, he's doing Harlem Blues, he's done Inside Man. He's done. I think Mano. I think he did Mano. No, that was original.
D
He did 25th hour.
A
25Th, yes. So he's kind of been. Is that kind of direction? Like, look, I don't want y' all to hold me in there and saying, oh, he only does. If this a comedy, this is Ryan. If it's something to do with Marvel or Black Panther, this got to be Ryan. You want to be, like, multifaceted. You don't want to be tied down or pigeonhole or typecast for any particular type of movie, right?
D
That's absolutely correct, man. Spike. Spike's a big, big hero of mine, man. A mentor, you know, Same with John Singleton, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, Big, big hero, mentor and then stepping outside of our community.
C
Right?
D
I love filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh, you know what I'm saying? Where you never know. You never know what they're gonna do next. Right? But you gotta. You know, it's gonna be quality, you know? You know what I'm saying? And I do definitely wanna continue to push myself, but also push the medium forward, man. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's a blessing to be able to. To work in a space where you get to work on things that are fresh, work on things that haven't been done before. You know, for instance, with this film, you know, this is the first time that an IMAX camera has been combined with a ultra Panavision lens. So it's the same camera work, same camera package that was used on Quentin Tarantino's film the Hateful Eight.
C
Oh, that was great.
D
Yeah.
A
Yeah.
D
So you combine that with the traditional IMAX film camera. First time ever. You know what I'm saying? So getting a chance to break new ground and do that with people of color on the screen, you know what I mean? In a story set in the Mississippi Delta, man, it's a great honor to be able to do something like that, you know what I mean? And it helps me to be motivated. It helps me to stay sharp. I'm getting to work with people who I've been working with for a long time, and it's just amazing.
C
That's dope.
A
I don't want to be too presumptuous of this, but I saw something, and it seems like I forget the two brothers, but it's two brothers, Ocho, and one of them might be cast. I want to throw my hat in for t'. Challa. You know, I would have throw my hat in. I'm just throwing. Hold on.
D
What you doing?
A
I want to throw my head into me.
D
Hey, man, get it in there. Hey. Hey, man, we can talk about it, man. Hey.
A
Oh, how you gonna.
C
How you gonna take my stilo? Can I get my role first in Creed?
A
Okay, okay. Oh, you okay? You want to be one of the fighters that Creed fight? Yeah. Okay, okay, okay. Yeah.
C
Oh, yo, you gotta think. I got an extensive background in combat sports, so it would be perfect to be able to transition. So I ain't really gotta play no character. I can just be myself.
D
Hey, hey. Popping that thing as. Oh. Huh? I feel.
A
Yeah. All this Hodge. That's the thing. All this Hodge.
D
Oh, all is hard. Oh, yeah.
A
I mean, hey, they had him. They had him already in the uniform. I was like, okay, yeah, he definitely could. He could definitely pass for t'. Challa.
D
Yeah, he could.
A
He could.
D
Yeah, yeah, yeah. All this shout, big shouts out to artists, man. He incredible, you know, he make watches, too, bro. Does he straight up. Straight up knows how to make watches, bro.
C
Right?
D
Like a genius, bruh. You know what I'm saying?
A
Ryan, were you as a kid, Were you in the comics? Were you a superhero fan?
D
Yeah, big time. I had an older cousin, you know, I'm the oldest of three boys, so I didn't have no big brothers. I always been looking for one, you know what I'm saying? I had an older cousin who was seven years older than me, who was.
A
A big comic book head.
D
And I got into him just because he. I thought he was cool. You feel me? So, so that's when I started reading them. But I did always read them. Like, I took a break from a little bit when I. When I got serious about sports, right? We used to watch the cartoons or what have you. But it was, you know, it was. It was all school and ball for, like, you know, from. I would say from, like, from, like, eighth grade, like, ninth grade maybe to my senior year of college. And when I went back to film school, I got back into him. You know what I mean?
A
Do you collect them, man?
D
That's a great question, bro. I, I, Honestly, I, I, I do. I do, man. Like, not. But not. But not actively, bro. Like, like, what happens now is, Is like, I'll go to Comic Con for work, and I. And I'll go. They got, they got a. They got basically a floor, you know, where you can go. Where you can go buy anything. Yeah. I'll go in there, hit the floor, and cop one or something, you know? I mean. But it's been a while since I've been in the comic book store, man. I'm not, I'm not gonna hold you.
A
Give me your top five superheroes.
D
Oh.
C
All right.
F
All right.
D
I'm gonna go fast. I'm not gonna overthink it. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go to. I'm gonna go to Charlie number one.
A
Okay.
D
And then I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go Wolverine.
A
Okay.
D
Can I put villains in it?
F
You can, Yeah.
D
I got magnetic Magneto. Yeah, I got Magneto Number three.
A
I got.
D
All right, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go deep cut. I'm gonna go deep cut. Roar. Search from. From Watchmen. Okay, Roll shark ro. And then I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go rogue.
A
Okay.
C
Number five.
D
Yeah, yeah. Rogue is gas, bro. Like the, you know. You know. You know, you know, take our glove off, touch you, take your powers, knock you out. I mean, that's, That's. Yeah, that's pretty. That's pretty solid.
A
I'm surprised you really didn't go with a lot of the old, like, like, Superman. Batman. Batman ain't no superhero. Batman ain't got. He can't do ish without that belt, bro.
D
Bro. Batman. Batman. Batman was a dog for me, though, bro. Without saying, Batman is crazy, man. That was the one for us because they had the animated series. And we used to mainline that. I had a homie from Fresno who played db, Incredible defensive back. He a coach now, man. Me and him, during fall camp, bro, we went half on a DVD pack. And during them double days, we would ride back to his girl house and watch and watch the movies between double days, bro, she'll make a little fool for us, bro. We on the couch, bro. Taking it back to eighth grade with it, you know?
C
That's live. That's live.
A
So let. Black Panther 3 How long we gotta wait?
D
Not long. Yeah, not long.
A
I mean, there's been a lot of rumors circulating that Denzel gonna be in it. Yeah, I don't know. That's what, that's what the word in the street.
D
Yeah, yeah.
A
We talking.
D
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're dying to work with Denzel, man. And I'm hoping we can make that happen. But, but, but I got every intention on working with him in that movie. And he. As long as, as long as he interested, man, it's gonna happen. But, but, but, you know, he. He a living legend, man.
A
He is.
D
And a great. And a great mentor for so many of us, you know, like, like, he just, he just, he all about, he all about looking out for us now, man. You know what I'm saying? And, you know, when it wasn't an example, bro, for how to live, man, he got his family around him, you know, his children, like, everybody around him.
A
I've been with Pauletta for 40 plus years. John David used to train with me in Atlanta. I had retired, but he was down at Morehouse. And the trainer that trained me bring him to the track. We, you know, you know, tell him how to do certain things. I've known that family for 20 that was in. I retired, so. Like, 20 plus years. Yeah, so. And Denzel is great. His wife, Pauletta.
D
Yeah.
A
John David, man, they're unbelievable.
C
Rc, I just, I just seen Denzel. I wasn't able to. Actually, I. They were. I was able to let him know I was there, but he wasn't taking no visitors. It didn't matter. It didn't matter who you were. I was able to see him last.
A
Week in New York.
C
I went to see Othello.
D
Yeah, yeah. He don't play when he on Broadway, bro.
A
No, no, no, no.
F
Yeah.
D
When he on Broadway. He in a different zone, bro. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. How was the play?
C
Oh, man, beautiful. Beautiful. Listen, I, I took drama. I took drama in high school, so that's why I still have a love for drama and the arts. And theater and dance. So I really.
A
Excuse me, huh?
C
Come on, Unc, man, stop playing, right? Hey, listen, uncle, you already know because you can. Hey, Unc, you can hear me talk when I talk about certain things you already know. It's something I really like now.
D
Hey, why you. Why you. Hey, why you. Why you call Bush when he said dance, though? That was when he. That was when he got up in there on you, bro.
C
Hold on. This is how. This is how. You know I love dance, too, mind you. Mind you, rc. I did the river daddy ballet when I was playing. Yeah, I just left. I just left New Orleans last week. I went to see Alvin Ellie, man, for the umpteenth time since 1988, when my grandma took me to go see him in 88 at the Gusman Theater.
D
I love it, bro.
A
Albert and the Chipmunks.
D
Why you on this talk.
A
Hey, come on. Hey, I'm go. I want to go see him. I'm gonna see him. I haven't been to a whole lot of Broadway. I saw. I saw Samuel Jackson when he played Dr. King.
D
Okay.
A
I might not get there.
D
Yeah.
A
Broadway is. Is different. Yeah, it is. It's so different than going to the. It's so different than going to an actual movie. I don't know if it. You know what I'm saying, Ocho? I mean, you just went to a. But to sit there and to see. I'm like, damn, this is amazing.
D
Yeah, it's no joke, bro. It's a true actor's medium, you know what I'm saying?
A
Yes.
D
Whereas in film, it's arguably a filmmaker's medium. They'll say, television is a writer's medium. That stage is an actors medium, bro. They got nothing to save them. You know? They just. They just up there. You know what I mean? There's no. You can't zoom in. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's just. It's just. I love it, bro.
A
And that's what Denzel says. Denzel says he's a. He's a. A theatrical actor that went to the screen, say he cut his teeth on Broadway. Yeah. He takes that. He said, some people are staged and they come to Broadway. I was Broadway that went to the. Went to the screen.
D
It's interesting, too, bro, because. Because, like. Because, like, what a lot of people don't. What a lot of people don't understand, too, is like. It's like. It's like the culture of Broadway, you know? Like, like, very similar to. You know, very similar to basketball. Right. Like, if You.
A
If you.
D
If you. You know, like, basketball is very culturally ingrained in the United States, so much so that if you go professional. If you go watch a professional basketball game anywhere in the world, most of the players is gonna be from the States, you know what I'm saying? If you go overseas to Italy and watch a game there or overseas in Germany, you know what I'm saying? Like, you'll see a lot of players here. And with that stage work, you know, it's so culturally ingrained in the UK you know what I mean? It's a part of that culture. They about the stage, the way we are about basketball here. You know what I'm saying? It's in every school. It's in every. You know, so you see. So you'll see these British actors getting shipped out all over the place, man, on every road, you know what I mean? Ain't on everything. On every, you know, you know, white, white, British actors, black British actors, You know what I'm saying?
A
Yeah.
D
And for me, coming up, bro, the first time I hit. I hit a Broadway play and really. And really seen. And really seen it, seen somebody get down, you know what I mean? It was like, you know, like, I damn near wish I had been exposed to it earlier, bro. You know what I'm saying? Cause I might have been doing that. You know what I mean?
A
Right? Well, hey, even if I just get a cameo, I could be. I could be Uboku's brother.
D
Oh, he got you, bro. Hey, hey, if y' all with it, man.
A
Hey, hey, hey. I could be Umboku brother or something. I'm coming out. I'm coming. I'm coming with it, right?
D
Hey, hey, hey. I'm with it, man. Y', all. Y', all, man, I'm with it, man. Y' all got such great chemistry, man. When I watch y', all, bro. Yeah, it's evident, man.
A

All right, guys, we know y' all been waiting to say no. You have not missed the Bud in interview. Now it's time for you to show you guys the interview that Ocho and I had with Bud Crawford earlier today. Let's take a listen to this sound, guys. All right, ladies and gentlemen, we told you we had a very, very special guest joining us tonight in the four belt era. He's the first male boxer to be undisputed in two weight classes. Here he is taking on the ultimate test. He says he wants to do it, he's going to do it. Here he is, ladies and gentlemen, Terrence Bud Crawford. Bud, what it do?
F
What's up with it, man?
A
I'm good, man, but look, we're seven, six. Seven days away from this flight. You seem so calm. You seem so relaxed. When I did the earlier interview on Club Shay Shay, you was like, I'm ready. I've been preparing for this. Everybody seems concerned because you moving up two, three different weight classes, but you seem calm. What's going. What are you thinking now as the. The crescendo is about to happen.
F
Only thing I'm thinking about is, is history. You know, making history. That's it.
C
But how has camp been so far? How has your approach been in camp this time as opposed to other fights?
E
Has it.
D
Have.
C
Have you had a different approach in the way you went about training for this fight?
F
You know, like I said before, you know, campus camp, you know, we go in there and put in the hard work. No matter who we fighting. Canelo's no different. We train hard, we fight hard, and the work is done in the gym.
A
The novice, like, oh, man, Bud, Bud, Bud. I've saw a lot of people that do this professionally, do what you do, box professionally, and they'll say, I don't know if Bud understands the difference. Difference in punching power from a 168 versus a 147 versus a 154 versus a 135. That seems to be the concern of people that do what you do for a living. Bud, are you concerned about that? Because when I talk to you, you said, he need to be concerned about my power. Facts.
F
You know, one thing is evident is that you're gonna get hit in the boxing match, okay? Always everything could be, you know, all the questions Will be answered come Saturday. You know, they don't got to speculate and. And guess and hope.
D
He can't take the punch.
F
How you know I can't take the punch? You know, that loan never hit me. And I said, I can't take the punch, or, you know, so I just laugh at people that's, you know, praying and hoping it goes the way they. They want it to go, you know, so Saturday, everything will be shown.
A
You look good, Bud. I mean, you. You had the Internet and the buzz. They say, man, damn, bud look good. Here we are, and we're still way a couple of days away from the fight, and he's looking like this. So obviously, he's put the time in the gym, he's put the time in the weight room. The one thing that's never been questioned about you, bud, is that you took your craft serious. You put the time in. No one has ever said bud Crawford stepped into the ring and he was unprepared. So we know you are prepared. But what because. And I asked. I said, well, damn, Bud. I mean, to step up in this weight class, what do you normally walk around at? You like, I'm good. He's like, this is really good for me. Cause I ain't gotta cut that much. I ain't gotta cut that much weight now.
F
Right, Right. No, I'm good. I'm good. You know, like I always say, everything happened for a reason, and that reason being that I'm here now and, you know, it's already written. So I'm just ready to go out there and make history and my legacy comes out.
C
Yeah, listen, if there was one boxer who can make history going up weight classes, going down weight classes, regardless of what it may be, you have a chance to cement yourself in the history books when it comes to some of the greatest boxers of all time. If there was one boxer that can do it, it's you, based on your mentality, your upbringing, your surroundings that have built you for moments like this. Boxing is about moments. Boxing is about making history and making fights people want to see. The only question I have going to this fight, I'm excited I have you to win. What challenges you think you might face fighting the Canelo?
F
It's going to be a lot of challenges. You know, he's a good. He's a good fighter all around. You know, he's a good pressure fighter. He's a good counter puncher. He's a good boxer. He has a great defense. You know, it's gonna be a lot of challenges but that what makes for a great fight, you know, you gotta, you gotta solve the puzzle. So, you know, just like he, he gotta solve my puzzle, I gotta solve his. You know, we gonna go in there and we gonna give our all and the best man gonna win.
A
Have you, have you thought about it? Have you thought about it, Bud? When you look at guys that have moved up, you look at Sugar ray, goes from 35 to 40, 47, 50, goes all the way to 60 to fight Marvin Hagler. You look at Floyd and what he's been able to do, you see Pacquiao. But when I think about a fighter, I'm looking at Roy Jones. Roy Jones started out as A junior, middleweight 154, goes all the way up to heavyweight. I'm looking at you where you started, bro, you 30, you 35, 30, 40 pounds from where you originally started at. Have you let that sink in the gap and what this would mean for Bud Crawford legacy. I'm in attendance. I'm going to be able to tell my grandkid, your papa, Uncle Joe not going to be there. Your papa was there when Bud Crawford shocked the world when he did what no one thought he could do other than himself and those in his circle. Have you allowed yourself to think about what this moment actually means in boxing history?
F
I haven't thought about that yet because the job is not done yet.
A
Okay.
F
You know, so of course, you know, a lot of people kind of remind that, you know, this is history. Like, go out there and do your thing. But, you know, you don't want to.
A
Get too, too far ahead of yourself.
F
Yeah, like it ain't, I ain't, I ain't did nothing yet, you know, so after, after, you know, the fight, that's when, you know, all the emotions and everything come out.
A
Reality says, you know, my question is, how soon after your last fight did you start thinking about the Canelo? Or was Canelo always on the horizon? You fought, you fought Sean Porter, you fought Arrow, and then you fought this last fight. So how, how, how far did you start thinking about, man, I want to fight, I want to fight Canelo.
F
Well, really, I, I wanted to fight Canelo when I was at 147, before I fought Magimov. I wanted to go up three divisions to fight Canelo, you know, because that never been done before. I want to do things that never been done before, you know, so I can be the first, like I was the first to become a two time.
A
Undisputed in the four belt era. First male boxer to do that like that's that's.
F
That's legacy right there. When they, when they talk about, you know, being undisputed and undisputed champions, they're gonna. They're gonna cement my name as number one. Who was the first fighter the first to do it.
D
Yeah.
F
And that's gonna set the. The bar high for the. The fighters coming after me to try to, you know, do better, which they probably will, you know, in history, but given time.
A
But you give them something to shoot for, Bud.
F
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
A
Just like the other boxers I mentioned, Sugar Ray and Roy Jones Jr. Some of these other fighters gave you something, gave you a target. And that's because, like you said, some fighters in 15 years, 20 years, 30 years from now said, I saw what Bud Crawford did, and I said, you know what? I want to challenge myself. Like Buddha. Bud went and did it, had no fear, and said, hey, whatever happens, gonna happen. But I need to know. I. I don't wanna. I don't wanna have sit back and regret, say, man, I should have got that fight. I should have did that and be afraid somebody's gonna say they did something because they saw Bud Crawford do it in 2025.
F
For sure. Yeah.
C
List something that the fans always ask for, include myself or being a huge boxing enthusiast. We always talk about making boxing great again, getting fighters to fight each other. I think you're going to start something, taking on the challenge, daring to be great, wanting to create a legacy and make history in itself. I think a moment like this, when you do step in the ring with Canelo, it will get some of the other best fighters to actually fight each other instead of, you know, Moses around and picking and choosing when to fight. Scared just the challenges that you're taking on is. Is dope. It's really dope to see, but after some of this magnitude. But a fight like this, where you talk about legacy, you talk, talk about history. I'm not trying to put the character before the horse, but what's next after something like this, of this magnitude, this damn big.
F
Hey, listen, man, we. We take one fight at a time, One fight at a time.
A
Well, you meant to put the horse before the carrot, because the carrot does go before the horse, because the horse is chasing the carrot. But we got what you get. We get what you got. We. We understand what he mean, Bud.
C
My bad, my bad, my bad, my bad, my bad.
A
But I know you're very. You're very close to Floyd. Did Floyd give you any pointers about how to go in there? Because Floyd fought Canelo, I think Canelo was 23. Floyd was 36. So you're a little slightly older than what Floyd was. Canelo's a little slightly older than when he fought. But has he given you any pointers of how to go about. Go about your business or do you even take pointers? Do you watch film on fight or do. Because Floyd said he didn't watch film, he took what his trainer was going to say and he implemented that in the ring. Do you watch film and have Floyd give you any pointers?
F
Well, of course, you know, I watch a little film, you know, not too much because, you know, always said that the fighter that I'm fighting now is gonna not gonna fight me the same way because my style is different.
A
Gotcha.
F
Watch.
C
Yeah. Hello.
F
Video to see the things that they like to do. Once I see that, then I know.
C
What to work on.
F
I know what to watch out for. Far as Floyd. No, I haven't talked to Floyd about Canelo or the fight.
A
When you go into the. When you say you watch a little video, are you looking for a pattern? Are you looking at the way he's trying to set things up? Are you looking the way he circled you? Looking the way. So what, what, what. What exactly are you looking for?
F
Just, you know, a little bit of everything. I like to look at to see what the tendencies is and things that they do, things that they don't like. You know, just certain patterns, for sure. So then when I'm in the ring, I recognize it when I see it and you know it's coming.
A
Are you.
C
You. You have all of us, all of us have. I have a routine. Before I played football game, there was something that. There was a pattern. There was a. I'm not really superstitious. Is there a certain routine that you do before every fight? And are you superstitious in any way?
F
Superstitious or anything? Like I said, all this is already written, you know, I mean, this is already in God plan, so, you know, there's nothing he can do, I can do that can write history. So it's already. It's already done, you know, so we just gotta see how it goes.
A
So go ahead, Ocho, go ahead.
C
I'm gonna say, I know how it's gonna go. I know how it's go. And when. When you raise your hand, I'm finna jump on the ring like little mama did when Jake was on stage. I'm telling you right now, I'm jumping. I'm jumping in the ring. They had to take me to Jail for sure. Yes, sir.
F
I'm gonna make sure they don't take you to jail, though. Don't worry.
D
Yes, Lord.
A
So, Bud, now, okay, here we are a couple of days away. Now for the most part, the haze in the barn, there ain't no more sparring. I don't know, you might, might have one more day of road work. Whatever the case may be, you now all of a sudden you're trying to make sure you come in at that 168. So over the next three to four days, what is a bird call for day? Are you watching movies? Are you, you know, you catch it up last. You know, your trainers in your ear says, okay, remember this? This is what we worked on. So what's up the last three to four days? What is that gonna be like for Bud Crawford?
F
A lot of media, a lot of interviews. Got the press conference, you got the weigh ins, you got, you know, the shakeouts, you got the making weight, then you got the fight. So, yeah, you don't just be sitting in a, in a room just chilling, you know, I mean, all day, you still got things to do.
A
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? That you don't sit alone in your thoughts that you like. You say you're doing interviews and you got this media tour that you got to go on, and you mentioned you got the press conference, but for the most part, I would think family, friends and loved ones leave you alone and so you can focus on what you need to get focused on. So is that what happens? I mean, you've already given everybody. Okay, look here, I cut the phone off at such and such a time. Don't call me. Hey, somebody else is going to handle what they need to do. Mama, you got the kids. Mama, you handle everything. Manager, you handle everything over here. Now it's time to prepare my mind and really just lock in.
D
Yeah.
F
It gets like that. But at the same time, me as a protector, I'll still be, you know, worried and thinking about them.
A
Yeah.
F
Especially when they all come to Vegas and, you know, they all partying or going out, things like that. Knowing me, I'm like, what they doing? Where, where they at? You know, Right. Are they here? They here are. Make sure they good. You know, so the worrying about them ain't gonna never stop. But everything else is, is definitely cool to be, you know, in your, in your thoughts. At times, like, I like to sit by myself and visualize the fight, you know, how it's going to happen and what I'm going to do if this happened. What I'm going to do if that happened, you know, and just be in your own space at times.
A
Do you believe a lot of people say, well, I don't believe Bud can win a decision. Bud is probably going to have to stop Canelo because Canelo is the champion at the 168, and it's probably the likelihood of him getting a. A victory by decision in Vegas at this weight. Probably not gonna happen. I mean, what is. What's your mindset? By any means necessary. If it has to go to the cars, it goes to the car. If there's a. If there's a. A point in the fight where I feel I can. I can. I can sit down on some punches and get him up out of there, that's what I'm gonna do.
F
My thing is, I don't worry about what people say, you know?
C
Okay.
F
Many people is worried about what other people saying, oh, he's too small or he can't take the punch or he not gonna get a decision, or he's this, he's that. I don't worry about none of that. My job is to go out there and fight. That's what I'm gonna do. Come say, I'm gonna go out there and fight and I'm gonna fight my ass off. And, you know, I mean, and then whatever happens, happen, you know? But I know one thing for sure. I'm not leaving without them autumn belts.
A
Damn. So, hey, you gonna be like a department store. You gonna have about 7, 8, 9, 10 belts when you walk up out of there.
F
I'm gonna be walking out with all of them.
C
I mean, has your parent has your power, your footwork, your speed, has everything carried up despite. Despite the weight gain, every. Everything flows with you, right?
F
You know, I mean, like, okay, like I said, just because you gain a little weight doesn't mean that, you know, you slower people get faster when they get bigger, more explosive, right? Punch a little harder, things like that. So I'm not worried about, you know, foot speed or hand speed or anything like that, that's fine.
A
But you also didn't have to go through that big weight cut to come all the way down to possibly 47. Cause, you know, and I was telling people, I said, man, they said, man, using the ring, wrestling with Bud, I say, that little mofo strong now. Hey, you saw. Hey, I said, you saw how you had me huffing and puffing. So don't. Don't let the size fool you. I know you say, man, he only want. I said, no, he wasn't 147 that day.
F
He said he was 147 that day.
A
Yeah, I don't know what he weighed, but it wasn't 47. Yeah, but do you feel. You do you feel. Do you feel comfortable? Do you feel like. Like. Because sometimes you get a little weight, boy. You're like, damn, I don't feel comfortable. You feel comfortable carrying this weight around? Feel great.
F
I feel great. You know, I'm just ready. I'm just ready to go out there and do my thing.
A
All right, well, Bud, look, wait, hold on. Wait. This last one. We got a rap, Ocho. Yeah, that's one.
C
Listen, I just want to make sure. Do me a favor. I know this is not really pertaining to the fight. I just want to make sure Andre Ward is in attendance because we got some.
F
The commentary at least him alone, man. I told you he gonna whoop your butt, man.
D
Just make.
F
Just make sure.
C
Just make.
F
Gonna stop you not.
C
But that's what I do, boy. We come, we cut from Bud.
F
Remember you was talking stuff to that. That big dude. I forgot his name, the football player, James.
A
Yeah.
C
Was gonna grab your little ass up.
A
Hey, hey, Bud, make sure you in attendance, bud. Make sure you there for that. Hey, Debo was gonna grab you like and grab me. I know nobody side.
F
I just saying Debo was gonna grab you like Shannon grabbed me.
C
Hey, man, listen, I got this. Just make sure you there when I whoop. When I whoop him. Just make sure you there and then Andre next.
A
Bud, I appreciate your time, man. Congratulations. Best of luck on the fight on Saturday night. We will be in attendance. And hey, I want to be able to say, you know what? I was in attendance when Bud Crawford shocked the world. Good luck. And we'll. We. Hey, we'll talk to you after the fight.
F
Appreciate it.
A
Bud Crawford. Yeah, it's always great having Bud. I mean, anytime around. I mean, I did the first interview a couple of months ago, and he's just like. Like you've been knowing him. I mean, he makes you feel like you've been knowing him your entire life. It's great to have him. Wish him the best of luck.
