And that was the beauty in the beginning of our friendship.

So that was the very beginning. Cause like you said, she came in a new bartender. You had already been established. You guys meet there. So did you know, like. Okay, so how was it at the beginning? Did you guys like talk, say anything to each other? It was just that night.

[Draya]

Yeah, pretty much. Because we had been working at that club for like maybe three, four months. So we would speak to each other in passing, but we had never really had a conversation yet. And then that night we were working behind a bar together and I walked up to her and I was like, girl, you gotta help me make this. And then after that we became really, really close and we just started talking every day at work. Then she ended up getting promoted to manager. And then I was like, cool. I could be late all the time.

I know how to work. I had on my name tag Shannon.

Yeah. And I was on manager.

And I was whipping that. Except on her.

Except on me. She used to let me be late.

You know what's crazy? You really have to have the gift of gab. Like if you really can't talk to people, it's not a job that you can just sit behind the bar, make a drink. Like you have to be friendly.

Like the bar is a fun time and a lot of times people come alone.

But I didn't know guys actually had jobs at the day shift. I thought they were just coming in.

So in other words, to be a great bartender, you have to have a gift of a gift of gab. You have to be a people person, you have to be seem like you're sincerely concerned about what's going on in their life. So what do you do? How long have you been in that job? Are you mad? You got kids where you from? How are your parents? You got siblings? You asking all that? Don't really care. Just, hey, bro, empty the wallet.

Yes. You gotta ask. And I just feel like it's also about just being customer service.

Too, like the service has to be on point as well. Because if you're not doing a good job with the service, you're not gonna get a tip. Corre you won't get a tip anyway.

And you also got a multitask too. See, we was at the strip club. So a lot of girls back there. Cause this was during the time where they started hiring bartenders. Cause they was fine. Not cause they could make drinks. It was like me and one other girl who knew how to make drinks. So you really gotta know how to multitask. I'm shaking ass pouring drinks and I

So like, that's how I got hired. I could do a little one too. I can pour a drink, right?

Okay. And bartenders, you hear the stories of how much these women are making. Did you ever get enticed to say, well, damn, you know, I'm making good money as a bartender, but I see these ladies, they making two, three, four thousand dollars a night. I'm making three, four hundred dollars a night?

Yeah. I mean, when I was younger, I definitely thought about dancing before because I was cool with a lot of dancers, but I just knew my parents was gonna be so upset with me, so I just never ended up. Trusted me. When I started working at the strip club, I was like 19 and I was still kind of living in a house.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Okay. Yeah.

[Draya]

So they trusted that I was going to work in bartending. And I just didn't want to break that trust.

[Lexi]

Good job. As for me, I cannot be trusted. It was too much money in there, Shannon. I drove because I was in Houston, right. I packed up my little Honda Civic, I drove to Dallas, and I shook my ass all weekend.

[Draya]

She did.

And I had a grandson.

So you a bartender during the week and then you booty. You shaking booty on the weekend?

[Draya]

Well, no, it was one night.

[Lexi]

It was a one night only special.

But you know what's crazy? It was like me and my friends did it. It was so much fun. I'm not gonna lie. It was like I was probably like, what, 23, 24. And I feel like it's a story to tell, but also it's like, you know, you gotta live yolo.

So what was it about Dallas? Because you wanted to make sure. Cause was the clientele kind of different and you didn't want anybody to know that you were in Houston and you were doing this when you went to Dallas.

You know what's so crazy? This is how slow and just. I was just drunk doing stuff. Cause I went to the most popping club in Dallas. Mind you, before I even got back to Houston, they was like, oh, did you have a good weekend? Everybody knew, damn it. Everybody knew I was. And then at this club in Dallas, the girls, you would have to take pictures, right? So they would put it around the club to let you know. My name was Paris. Oui, oui.

So they knew Paris was coming to

the stage in beautiful Paris.

Yes. So it was so funny because I was like, why would I go to the most popping club, like, usually?

So I've definitely had and heavy hitters coming in. Oh, yeah. I mean, it gets crazy in the strip club during those weekends. So I definitely have had, like, a $10,000 night, like, easy. And then I'm a hustler, too, so I used to be charging people for stuff. And I ain't putting it in that cash register. Y' all done met y' all quota. It's my turn.

Yeah. I'm selling bottles of water for $20. What? You thirsty enough? You gonna buy it?

Cause we don't. Didn't know. I had the same opportunity. Had an opportunity to buy some bitcoin. Guy said. I said, you. Like, I charge you $1,000 of coin.

He said, hey, you know. Cause I know you, and we'll get an opportunity. You just buy these 25 coins. 25,000. And then I'll give you an opportunity to buy as many as you want. I'm like, bro, I don't know. I say, I don't even know what it is.

And because I didn't know what it is, it's hard for me to invest my money in something I don't know what it is.

And I'm looking at. I'm like, boy, if I'd have had them coins.

And hopefully it's the fall to get the ambiance of homecoming to be in the student center. And when the sorrows and the bruhs, when they out there in the park and they doing they thing and that buzz when everybody come back, all the alumni come back, you've got to. And when they put on them step shows, hey, you got to experience it just once in your life.

You have to. And it was a very different experience for me because I grew up, I went to an all white school my entire life.

So I actually failed out of U of H. Like I failed out, man, when I tell you I was driving to Austin, I'm going to the UT game, the niggas was outside, Hey, I was having a ball. But it redirected me, so I had to go to tsu. It's just crazy how life works out. That was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. My life, my career, everything. Like, I finally felt like I belonged somewhere. I was like immersed in the culture. That's when I started really getting into like my journalism stuff. And it was just like I had a teacher there. She was just like, this is what you need to do. I don't know what you think that you want to do, but this is what you need to do. So it was the first time I really had like teachers that cared.

You know what, you may be wild and crazy, but you're actually very intelligent and you can make it work. So hbcu. I'mma always root and tell the people to go there.

He lived in Atlanta, and he was like convincing me to move to Atlanta. I went to visit him a few times and he was like, yeah, you need to move out here. I'll help you with the transition, whatever. So I ended up meeting this girl who was a dancer. We became friends. We were friends for like six months. We moved to Atlanta together. Didn't really know each other. Obviously. It didn't work out. Broke our lease. Me and Lex were still friends. And I was like, girl, you need to move to Atlanta. And so she ended up moving there maybe like, what, three, four months after me and the girl broke our lease, Lex ended up moving there. We would always be outside. So focus on how to get yourself out of this tough spot and how to get a better financial situation than trying to find a partner. And then give. Now, me being 35 and like, being successful myself. Look, you want somebody successful, I want somebody successful. And looking back on it, when I was 25 and 26 and I felt like I was in. I felt this sense of entitlement in dating a man who was worth, like, $5 million. It's like, why you ain't. You ain't even got 50,000. Right.

But at the same time, Draya is a woman, and I was a woman at the time. We're not looking for men. That's who was hitting on Dre.

Some people might take them 30. It's hard. Kind of like maturing. Some kids mature a lot sooner than others, and some like, well, damn, he's mature at 13, 14, and here you are 25 and you still ain't mature.

Everybody's trying to get that clip, trying to make people say something to the point that they're forcing it. Everything changed in podcasting after that.

You know, the thing is that. And I tell people, Kevin, like, you try. I said, no. What I do is that when you come on my pod, I allow you to tell your story. You can tell your story better than anybody else can tell your story, and I allow you to tell it uninterrupted. Yeah, we really, like. Sometimes we have stuff that come in and guests will say, can you clip this? Take this out? No problem. But for the most part, our pods are unedited. That's why they last two hours. That's why they 215, 230. But I'm asking you to tell your story now. If there's some part of your story that you don't want to share, that's fine, too. I'm not gonna keep prodding you, trying to get you to have a moment, right? Nah, it's not about that. But I do think the thing is that when people come sit across from me, they see I don't judge them. We gonna have a good time. We gonna laugh. We gonna get up. Did you enjoy it? But I've never watched an interview and be like, oh, my gosh, he's not doing a good job. You. I think a lot what people get mad at though, is because in the podcasting game, you know, we're regular people per se, that created a platform. So a lot of times they'll see former athletes or former rappers or actors or anything. They come in this space and they take over. But one thing about podcasts that I've learned, if you're good, it's gonna float to the top, and if you're bad, you're gonna sink to the bottom. I don't care. I've seen some of the A list actresses, actors, start a podcast and that shit stinks. Yeah.

Cause having good conversation is a skill.

[Lexi]

Yeah, it is.

And I think the thing is, what people don't realize is that if you are somebody and you're starting a podcast, that might get people to initially watch you, but, oh, no, I won't be back here no more.

And they're not going to stick around. And if they do come back, it's probably going to be because of the guest issue.

But I will say, for the past, in my 20s, I didn't really care about getting married Then. I don't know, when I turned 30, I had this epiphany and I was like, oh, I need to go get married. Like, I have to find my husband. I'm not having kids unless I get married. And then now, at 35, I'm kind of back in a space of trying to figure out if it's really what I want. Because I think when people look at marriage, they don't look at all of what it really entails. Yes, it looks good on social media. The nice wedding is great. Being with this person and y' all look good together and y' all got got great chemistry. All of that stuff is amazing. But, like, it's so much more that goes into marriage. It's for rich or for poor. It's in sickness and in health. Sometimes you got to know when to shut the up. Being honest.

Women love to get the last word in. Sometimes you just got to know how to be quiet. It's just a lot that comes with it. And you have to be okay with compromising a lot. And so I be just asking myself, okay, girl, knowing all of these things, do you really feel like you want to. To be a wife?

You know, it takes a special type of person to raise a child as your own that's not your own.

To step up and to really just like, be a man. Because she has two boys. So he's raising another, you know, another boy that's not his. So I don't necessarily believe that to be true. I think that when you decide, though it is a big role, it's a huge. Because I grew up. My father passed when I was very young. And so I had like a stepfather figure. And it was just kind of like when him and my mom broke up, he abandoned us. And I never heard from him again. Now this was a man that was living in the house. I looked at him like a father figure. So I'm very skeptical on even when I'm dating somebody, meeting their kids, being around them, because I know how that feels. Because you feel like, oh, this ain't my kids. I don't gotta deal with it no more. But I've grown Attached to you. So to me, a person that's a stepfather that really sticks around and holds it out like waka flocka. He adopted Charlie, his stepdaughter, and he's still in her life even though they haven't been together for years. I commend men like that. Yes, that's a great. That's a great man.

Because, you know, you see somebody think it's a thankless job because, okay, you raise someone, you come in and they're at a very young, and you do everything. You give him everything but life itself. And then all of a sudden, well, I want my dad. And I'm not trying to take you from your dad, but just to excommunicate me. I don't know if it was a skit or something, but I saw something on social media where the mom. The guy said he had raised since he was, like, for 15 years, and they only had X amount of seats. So the dad was gonna get the seat. The stepfather wasn't gonna be able to go, even though he had paid for everything.

That's crazy.

So he's not gonna be able to go to the graduation. So I stepped in when he didn't, and so now he wants to come back after the child is of age. Yeah, and you cut me out.

That's why men be getting angry.

But a lot of times, it be an ego thing. A lot of times men will be a shitty dad.

Then all of a sudden, another man comes along and doing what you're not doing. All of a sudden they got an issue with it.

It's the same thing with a woman. A man might not want that woman. Yeah, but let another man show interest. Oh, my God, baby, what you doing?

You told me to go f myself. You ain't want nothing to do with me. Why is it like that? Women the same way. Don't y' all put your head like y' all ain't come women the same way.

No, I like nice men. I'm not even gonna lie to you. Like, I don't like men that treat me bad. I don't understand the allure that some women have when it comes to men who are not nice to them. And it makes them want them even more or want to try to, like, prove them. Prove to them that they worth it or that they. No, I feel like as women, we already the catch. Like, men are supposed to pursue us. Why are you trying to prove to somebody who already don't see your worth that you worthy? Yeah, I think that's strange. Like, you should want a man that at the bare minimum, is kind to you.

You know what? This. And people still talk about it, and I don't know why. Cause I think they have a wonderful relationship. And that's just for me on the outside looking in. Russell and Ciara.

He's raising. I don't step. That's his son now. Future, obviously his biological father. But you couldn't tell if you didn't know that situation. Sierra was that whatever somebody was before, whatever Russ was before. I'm talking about. What are they now?

And I will never understand why people have an issue with a man stepping up and being in a child's life when they fathered off, want to be there.

Like, what's wrong with that? How does that make somebody corny? Because they loving on a woman, loving on their family the right way, and showing us a good example of what healthy black love and a healthy black family look like. How is that corny? We up as a generation to think that that man is corny, considering what they show us and what we see on the Internet. Because it looks like nothing but positivity.

Yeah. And that goes into that stand culture I was talking about earlier. Just because you like somebody's music or like their art or whatever it is, at the end of the day, if that's what y' all call corny. That's what I want.

If that's corny, I'll take it. If that's what. Cause to me, it's not corny. Being a good husband, a good father, that's what we consider corny. We need to look at our community.

Do y' all feel like people do that because they didn't have that example? Like, so many people in the black community didn't have that kind of example growing up? So that's maybe why they think it's so corny?
