But you do realize, And I think 50 said this, that no matter what you say or what you do, somebody's gonna be opposed to it. Yeah. And even if you had gay pushback, there's gonna be a segment of that. It's not that many baddies out there.

I mean, and again, like people can have their opinions. Why do I have to. Just because you feel like person said is wrong, argue them down. And like you said earlier, you can have the opinion that you have. Even if I don't agree with you, I don't have to disrespect you.

I tell certain friends about my relationship. I don't talk to all my friends equally about my business, if I'm being honest. So it's the ones that I feel like I can trust with the information. And I know not judging me or, like, not happy if something goes wrong. Because I feel like sometimes, even when people be your friends, you know, when they don't really be happy for you, of course y' all can still be cool. And I feel like people love you because sometimes it's not about you. It'd be more so about them, you know? So I think you just have to have that discernment when it comes to talking to your friends about your relationship.

No, we understand that, but I didn't realize how many People. And what I started to realize that everybody that applaud, they aren't applauding for you.

And then that's what I had to realize.

And then, like a few years later, the show grown. The show grown.

And so that helped us get a lot more viewership. And then they ended up asking, asking us did we want to sign to them, because they were trying to start a management company and we were going to be the first people that they signed. They really cleaned up our business too. Like we didn't know what we're doing, what we were doing. But they have taught us so much and we were getting so many. No. And Carlos was the one. Yes. Yeah, we've talked about it a lot of times. I mean, because it's something that we still deal with. I don't think grief ever stops. If anything, like as time progresses, it just comes more in ways. So you'll think that you're in a good space and then something will happen where it triggers you and it reminds you of that person and it brings you back to those old memories and now you an emotional wreck. But like I will say for me now, when it comes to my dad, when I think about him, when I do cry, it's more happy tears than me being really sad like how I was in the beginning. But I mean, it's difficult, especially doing it while navigating. Being a public figure.

Being a social media kind of personality. Because I remember the day my dad passed away. I had to still record Poor minds. And still to this day, when people watch the episode, they always say they couldn't tell that I had just lost my dad job then. Thank you, thank you. And I. But I felt like that's what I had to do. Cuz back then we weren't batch recording either. So if we didn't record an episode that week, it wasn't going to.

We a get no money, we ain't get no money. We got.

[Draya Michele]

Right. But I mean, it's extremely difficult. And I think the hardest part about it is that when you start to reach this level of success, you wish the person was here to be able to see it. Especially because it's your parent and all of the sacrifices that they made is part of the reason why you are who you are today.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

Yeah, I agree with that. It was the same for Me, like, when my mom passed, we were about to start our second tour, so it was kind of like, okay, do you still wanna do the tour or not? And I always just like, every decision I make still to this day is like, okay. I try to put myself, like, what would my mom want to see? What would she want? So I think it's so hard to navigate because, you know, people be like, oh, she's here. She sees you. But it's. It's not the same.

[Shannon Sharpe]

It's not the same. The physical. Yeah, we know she's here in spirit. And to see this. Yes, to see this.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

I mean. Cause my mom was there. Like, my mom was the one in the comments. I bet. Mom, stop. They be like, in the comments, oh, who are these two girls? Those are my babies. Like, she was in the comments. Fight for her life. So I know that she would be like, so, so happy to see this. But it's definitely a hard club to be a part of, and you don't understand until you're in it. You know what I mean? So I think one thing that I have found joy in is just like, I find joy in bringing people joy. Because sometimes I don't have a lot of joy. But when I see people be like, man, Lex, you, Andre, made me laugh so hard today. Like, that fills that void of, you know. Because that's how my mom was for me when I was feeling bad, she be like, girl, do you know who you are? Like, my mom. Cause we from a small town, so she used to swear up and down. She was the Michelle Obama of Orange, Texas, parody. So she was like, do you know who you are? Like, she would always remind me of who I was. So I think we're just kind of living in our purpose for our parents.

What do you think the most important thing that you've learned from your parents?

[Draya Michele]

To be kind. Because kindness doesn't cost anything. Like, I'm just always so shocked, especially being in the space that we are in now, especially with, like, having a team and having employees. Sometimes I get on the Internet and I see how people treat the people that work for them, who help make their business run the way that it runs, and it shocks me. Or even just, you know, we're in a time where people feel like they have to record everything. How people treat homeless people, how they treat waitresses at restaurants. I think the kindness that spills out of you is a big indication of your character.

Yeah, for sure.

[Draya Michele]

And it's a big indication of. Of the people that raised you as well. And so one of the best things that I think my parents instilled in me is just being a kind person. My mom even told me she came to our studio back in December when we were recording an episode and she was telling me how like so many of our, like so many people that were a part of our staff was just telling her how nice of a person I am. And then she raised me to be so nice. And I think that's one of the best compliments that you can get from people.

Yeah.

About your character, I agree.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

Like, I grew up kind of spoiled and kind of having everything and my mom just instilled in me like she always had this thing like when you put good in the universe, it's gonna come back to you. I don't care what you going through, I don't care if you at your last dime, you don't let people use you or make you feel like less than, less than. And then you want to, oh, I'm gonna show I don't have that revenge spirit in me. I'm not a spiteful person person. I've had some people do the meanest, nastiest things to me and I still don't have that spirit in me to do anything back to you. Because you know what, that's why I say God bless you and I send people on their way. Cuz I continue to put good energy in the world. Do I slip up? Yes. But I'm still a human being. But I continue to put that good energy in the world. And I think my life is a testament of the energy that I've put into the world. So that was something my mom always said to me. She was like, well, if you do good and do right by people, you will receive your blessings in life. And my life is one big blessing for sure.

Did you like when you have a. Have you had a conversation with your mom about that?

Um, yeah, we've had conversations about that. But you know, I didn't grow up with her. Well, I did, but I thought she was my cousin.

So your grandmother probably.

[Draya Michele]

Well, my. Yeah, my great aunt raised. But I have had conversations with my biological mom and I think honestly still to this day, that's why we don't have a extremely close relationship because it was a difficult situation for her to navigate in childhood and even now in adulthood.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Cuz she was a child.

[Draya Michele]

Yes. But it was also like a chain of traumatic events that led to that ended up being the outcome for her of her getting pregnant at such a young age. So I think it's just very traumatic for her and sometimes I think that I'm in a lot of ways a reminder of that. And she hasn't healed or grown and

[Shannon Sharpe]

she can't verbalize, she can't explain to you and she can't quite put into words of what not only that it did to her, but probably her not being there for you.

[Draya Michele]

Yeah. And I think in a lot of ways, like being a child, when that happened to her, she felt like a lot of the adults in her life weren't there for Her.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Yes.

[Draya Michele]

And they didn't protect her.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Yes.

[Draya Michele]

And so she has kind of an estranged relationship with some of the people in our family as well.

[Shannon Sharpe]

I can see that. Cause I'm of that generation. And I understand, because they look at women that. Excuse me. Young ladies that had. She was a child.

[Draya Michele]

Yeah, yeah.

[Shannon Sharpe]

When they have kids at that age. Oh, she was fast. She asked for it. She put herself in that situation. So I know what people around there, because I've been in situations that I've seen people have kids at a very young age, and they brought that on themselves. That's a child. No matter what you think, Fancy or this. Or grown. She was grown. That is a child. Yes, A child. Deserve protection.

[Draya Michele]

Absolutely.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Not scorn, not ridicule. And how do you. I mean, when she grows up, she grew up with like. Like that and having to place you there. And like you said, a lot of times, that's what they do. Oh, that's your cousin. That's your sister. That's your auntie.

[Draya Michele]

Yep.

[Shannon Sharpe]

You. How old were you when you found out that was your mom?

[Draya Michele]

I was 18, but I already knew, though.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Really?

[Draya Michele]

Yeah.

[Shannon Sharpe]

How did you know?

[Draya Michele]

Because, like, we. Because we look alike.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Really?

[Draya Michele]

Yeah. And so for me to be adopted from outside of my family, and I happen to look so much like my cousin, who's 12 years older than me, who I grew up around kind of strange a little bit. And then I also, like, I look like her and her sister, so I thought it was really weird. And my mom that raised me, like, growing up, she would tell me little things here and there about my biological mom. So I kind of just started putting two and two together. And so by the time I was 18 and they took me out to dinner and they told me. I wasn't really that shocked. Like, I already knew.

[Shannon Sharpe]

When. When you finally. When they finally told you, even though you had some inclination that this was your biological. Was she there? Did she cry? Did you cry? What were the emotions that you felt that came pouring out because you finally had the answer. You surmised that this might be my mom, but to know it wholeheartedly, that this is my mom. I knew this all along, but I finally got the answers. I finally got the truth that this is her.

[Draya Michele]

It was a lot of emotion. So, yeah, she was there. My mom that raised me was there, which is really my great aunt. And then her mom was there. My mom, my biological mom. Her mom was there. My biological grandma. Yeah. So all of us were there. And I remember I was like. I said, I Already knew. So I wasn't super shocked. But I did feel a certain sense of like betrayal.

[Shannon Sharpe]

That's what I was gonna say. I was gonna say you felt betrayed.

[Draya Michele]

Yeah, I did. Because I just couldn't believe and by everybody but my mom that raised me because she was always as honest as she could be considering the circumstances. Her and my dad were always really honest with me. But I felt really betrayed by my biological mom and my biological grandma. Cuz I just felt like how could y' all let all this time go by and not want me to know this information? And then I found out that they never wanted me to know. It was really my mom that raised me, that pushed for me to find out the whole about the whole situation situation and everything. So it was definitely really difficult and I cried a lot for a really long time. And then we tried to start having a better relationship. Cause we were never really close to begin with but we tried to start having a good relationship. And then over the years it's just kind of been like this up and down type of relationship where we try, then we don't speak. We try, then we don't speak.

[Shannon Sharpe]

Did you feel like 18 years is a long time? Because the question is, is this what I always tell people? Are you trying to go back and get what you lost or you trying to start from 18 and move forward? Because you can't go back to 18 and get what you lost. That's never coming back. You got to start at 18 and move forward.

[Draya Michele]

I think that you should be trying to move forward. But I also think that that has to be on both people to want the same thing. And for me it was something that I wanted and still to this day it's something that I'm open to having with her. But I think she has to get to a point point to where she's okay with having that type of like having a closer relationship with me. And then I have a little sister now, so sometimes I do wish I could be closer to my little sister. But we don't really have a relationship so that's difficult. Cuz my little sister is like eight.

Wow.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

So yeah, I forgot she is older now. I'll be shocked every time I hear it. It's a lot.

It is, it is.

[Draya Michele]

It's difficult. But again, I think it's feelings and emotions that she has to work through that I've learned to not internalize. Going to therapy and stuff myself. It's things that I can't hold against her or internalize or feel like it's about me. Because it's literally not about me. It's about her.

Have she gone to therapy? Have you recommended therapy? Have you sought like, mama, you need to get to therapy. I'm willing to send you to therapy because I want to have this relationship.

Because I understand your great aunt raised you and she did an unbelievable job, but you only get one mom.

And she actually really wants me to have a better relationship with my biological mom. I mean, I don't know if she's went to therapy. The last time that I had a conversation with her about it was maybe like five, six years ago about her going to therapy. So I don't know if it's something that she's done as of late, but I mean, yeah, I would be open to going to therapy with her as well, but. But again, it's something that's something she's

gonna have to want to do though.

[Draya Michele]

But I do have a. I am blessed enough to have a relationship with my dad. With my biological dad now, though. Yeah.

Cuz he got out of jail a few years ago and now we have a really good relationship.

Do they have a relationship?

[Draya Michele]

No. But she did connect me to him, so that's how. I mean.

Yeah, but they. They really never had about. They never had a relationship after the conception of you or after you came?

[Draya Michele]

No. Cause they were so young. Like she was 12 and I think he's two years older than her. And then he ended up going to prison like two years after I was born. And he was in there my whole life.

Yeah.

So he just got out of jail like two years.

He was a child too.

Yeah, yeah.

They were both minors.

Yeah. I mean, I mean to think about. And that just goes to show you because a lot of times people talk about their situation and you don't really know what someone else is going through. You think your situation is bad? Someone else had a situation worse.

Yeah, for sure. For sure. And I just always say I feel extremely blessed to have ended up in the situation that I ended up with my adopted adoptive parents that raised me. Because sometimes I do think about what my life would have been like if my biological parents did raise me. And I don't know that it would have been the same outcome.

They were not equipped. They were not equipped. A child can't raise a child.

[Draya Michele]

Absolutely.

[Shannon Sharpe]

They said, I mean, you give, you give a child a baby dog, they sit the baby doll down and they go on about this. They ain't think about that baby doll till the next day.

Remember when they used to be giving us eggs now?

[Shannon Sharpe]

Yeah, yeah, yes, yes.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

But I think just to add on to that, I think that's a testament of, you know, your mom and your dad, because like, Dre is the friend, like you feel like she always has it together. Everything is good. So when me and her first became friends, I remember we sat down for one night, we were just drinking, and she gave me the whole spill of her whole family. I was like, what? Wait, who did. Who? It's a lot, you know what I'm saying? It's a lot of movement. And it was just like, wow. I would have never thought, you know, I'm saying like, so you saw, you never know what, how people were raised ways, what they've been through, what they've gone through. But I think it's just a testament to, you know, your mom and how of amazing of a job that she did for real.

I think the thing is, the biggest thing that you can take from that is you don't let circumstance determine your outcome.

[Draya Michele]

Yeah, absolutely. And I also think it's always a testament to God and him having an anointing on your life as well. So whatever it's supposed to be is going to happen.

It'll be hardly. Yes. All right, we're gonna get you out of here on this now. You all, you know, know 35, 37. What did you know that? What, what would you do differently at 35 and 37 had you known in your 20s?

[Draya Michele]

Oh, I always say I wouldn't have dated some of the people I date cuz they didn't deserve access.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

They.

They deserve access.

[Draya Michele]

No, I gave people access to me that didn't ever deserve it in the first place. And that's something that I wish that I known better in my 20s. And. And then another thing, investing. I wish that was something that I knew more about back then. Cuz I be like, damn, I be sitting on a whole bunch more money. If I had started investing back then,

but with poor minds, would, would it have come to be if you had invested in Bitcoin, if you.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

She would have been rich and I would have been living on her couch. I would have been living good. It wouldn't have been on poor Mind, you're right.

And that's why I think everything does happen for a reason. So you can't look back on it and regret it.

[Andréa Lewis (Lex)]

You know what? For me, this is so simple and it's so silly, but it's something that I've been actively doing. I wish I would have took more pictures because I don't have a lot of pictures with my mom, because she hated taking pictures.

Yes.

And now even, like, with my nephews, like, when he was little, Like, I wish I would have taken, like, we have tons and tons of pictures of him, but I just even think of just about life in general.

Like, me and Dre have tons of pictures together, but I just wish, like, I need to start documenting my life a lot better.

And when I think about times of me just even working in the club, like, I was just working, right. And I didn't stop and be like, oh, girl, let's just take a quick picture. Not to post, but just to have.

I think we are living in a time where everybody. We are trying so hard to be private, where we need to put the phones down, but we're putting them down so much to where we're not saving memories for, like, our grandkids to see, you know, people down the line to see. But when our people want to see our intimate, private moments scrapbooking, like, we don't do that no more. So I think for me, I really regret just not documenting my life a lot better than I should have. Yeah.

What are the goals moving forward?

We have so many goals. Like, eventually we want to have a production company. We would love to start signing other podcasts as your umbrella. Yes. We would love to get a deal. Like, we talk about that all the time. Like a streaming deal.

We would love to do that. We would love to get another TV show. Because I feel like, you know, we had travel queens last year, which was our reality, and it was so good. Like, I feel like it really deserved a second season, but it didn't end up happening for, like, a lot of different behind the scenes reasons.

It wasn't us, though.

Everybody be asking me to do standup and I don't necessarily know if that's for me right now, but I do have something exciting coming up. I can't announce it yet, but I think when I drop this announcement, everybody's gonna be like, oh my God, this makes sense. And I know it's gonna open the doors to a lot of things. So, like, my goal in the next few years is just to really get my acting bag. Like, I told myself I wanna get an Oscar for a comedic performance. Cause I feel like Oscars always go to the series, the dramas. I want to make people laugh so hard they like, oh, you gots to get that. So my goals outside of poor minds, like, I really want to focus on my acting and, you know, do all that stuff.

Ooh, it's such a fun experience. Like, I don't even know how to explain it, to be honest. Like, we always say it's kind of like having a girls night in with your homegirls mixed with maybe a variety show a little bit. So, I mean, you can expect some twerking, you can expect some singing, you can expect some jokes, you can expect some serious conversations. We also gonna give advice. We might shed a few tears. I mean, it's really just an experience like none other. I truly don't feel like any other live podcast that's on tour right now is similar to our show. Like, you can't get it anywhere.

It's extremely unique. Extremely unique to say the least. I feel this is our third tour and so, you know, checks have cleared, so the production value has gone up. You know, we have more of a staff now.
