Their podcasts everywh acast.com Scenes from the Coffee Break Spanish Cafe lesson 5 Hola. Todos ibie enmenidos a coffee break Spanish Hola, yosu Pablo. Que tal, Pablo? This series where we're flies on the wall, not flies on the wall, because that would be unhygienic. But we're in the cafe. We're eavesdropping on conversations. We're seeing scenes from the cafe in every episode, every chapter. It's like a little scene of what and the cafe. Y claro del texto en espanol.
Pablo
Anterior.
Podcast Host
So a nice exchange. If he managed to get the job, then he at some point would return to invite her for a coffee or to treat her to a coffee. So we are in Isabela's cafe. We are going to listen to our next chapter. Now we'll listen and then, of course, we'll talk through all of. All of the language and help you understand everything.
Podcast Host
So, as we've come to expect, we're starting with a little bit of a weather report. Hoy a brillado el sol. So today the sun has shone asido como pequeno adelanto. Now, we may have come across the expression adelante, meaning come on in or go ahead. And adelantado is when something is brought forward or advanced. So une la adelanto is a preview in a sense. So the adelanto in that case would be the preview. Okay, so this is a preview of the primavera, the springtime, after various rainy days. After a few rainy days.
Pablo
Un sabado perfecto para comer con amigas.
Podcast Host
So a perfect Saturday in order to eat with friends. It's the perfect Saturday to have some lunch with some friends. What a lovely image. So just that. Pense I thought. So I thought just that. Al ver. Now this is nice because it's al plus the infinitive. It's on seeing or when I saw a un grupo de cuatro mujeres de havanzada yad when I saw a group of four women of advanced years que no paravan de charlar ider didn't stop chatting and laughing on one of the tables on the terrace.
Pablo
To stop doing something and to stop to do something. So a quitanemo sune jemplo de no paravande charlar. Para charlar.
Podcast Host
That's right. So if you stop to do something, if you pause in order to do something, then that would be parar para hablar. But if you stop doing something, it's parar de hacerral en effecto muy bien, Marc. In this case, te char lar y reyr chatting and laughing.
Pablo
Podcast Host
Muchas huerteno dos de ellas. So two of them tenian bolsas had bags. Lo que me I tho pensar which made me think, we'll come back to that. Lo que me itho pensar. So ather the verb to do or to make and me itho pensar to me it made think que habian pasaduna gradable. So avien pasado. They had spent. Which tense is that?
Pablo
Plu squam perfecto.
Podcast Host
The plu perfect tense. So they had spent una agradable manana. Could we have said una manana agradabile se tambien los. Los. Okay, so una manana gradable. Una gradabli manana de comprasa. Nice. A pleasant morning of shopping. Now, I said we'd come back to lo que me iho que pensar? Can we say here? Two of those had bags, which made me think. Could we just say que me yito pensar?
Pablo
No.
Podcast Host
So we're seeing the low representing the fact there. So two of them had bags. And this fact, fact. It was this fact which made me think, lo que mei tho pensar. So it's careful when we're going from English into Spanish, which made me think we need a lo que in there. So loqual and lo que both work there, but not el qual? No, el qual would have to be a particular thing.
Pablo
El volso el cual me comprado.
Podcast Host
So the bag which I had.
Pablo
I see.
Podcast Host
Okay. Okay, let's continue.
Pablo
Podcast Host
So you like sweeping up sos. Okay. It's quite rewarding. Okay, that's brilliant. I have to get you to read that sentence again. And I would like all our listeners to repeat exactly how Pablo reads this. Go for it.
Pablo
Podcast Host
We've got two fantastic double R's in there. Go and give us. I was sweeping Barria and the terrace Terraza. How wonderful. Barria and Terraza. Okay, so while I was sweeping the terrace area, the fona de la terraza escutche sus conversationes di bertidas. I listened to their funny conversations, their pleasant conversations.
Pablo
Podcast Host
I love this. So the truth is. To tell you the truth, la verda esque me allegre muzzo. I was really happy. I was cheered very much cuando a when I heard che estudiaron juntas that they studied together. So these are perhaps friends from days in school or college or university, and they studied together. Okay, so anque is one of those words that we always think, oh, what's coming next? Is it an indicative or a subjunctive? Here it is an indicative, because we'll explain. Anque parecia que cadaguno si yosu Camino. So although it seemed that each one of them followed their own path, so they did follow their own path. And that happened. So that's why it's an indicative. So anqui parecia que cadauna sillo suc Amino her abonito ver que a un mantenian una buena mistad. So although each one of them followed their own path, it was nice to see that they still maintained this good friendship.
Pablo
Podcast Host
Okay, so dos de just two of them no paraban de ensenar photos y videos desus nietos. So the same idea. They didn't stop doing something. So no paraban de ensenlo. Yo enseno el espanol. I teach Spanish to tambien Pablo en senas el espanol, pero ensenar tiene el otro ecentido de mostrar se. So in this case, they were showing photos of their grandchildren. De los felites que estan siendo abuelas. I love this. And they were talking about how happy they are are being grandmothers. So de lo felites que estan. So felites has to agree because we're talking about las abuelas.
Pablo
Que abuelas.
Podcast Host
So the thing here is the verbe. These are both verbs which mean to be, be. And it's a question of whether they're always happy, they've always been happy people, or whether they're temporarily happy in this stage of their life or indeed at this point in the day. Even so, estar ferith. I guess it gives us more flexibility in their feelings the rest of the time. But I'm sure they're very happy being so de los que stan siendo abuelas. So they're talking about how happy they are being grandparents, and also about how tired they are when they finish the day after their children leave the grandchildren with them in the house the whole day long. Okay?
Pablo
Otra parecia avero ptado porsentracen sucarrera hablaba de clases ponencias y congressos.
Podcast Host
So one of the ladies, Another one of the ladies. Otra parecia avertado. She seemed to have chosen por sentrasin sucarera to concentrate on her career. Hera profesore Helen Luisidad. She was a professor at university. Hablaba de classes. She's talked about classes, ponencias y congressos. So congresos would be conferences, congresses.
Pablo
Podcast Host
Okay, so maybe it's the kind of idea of presenting a paper that you've been working on in a kind of university context. Csso okay. Okay. This is nice. So when the others, the other ladies complained about their husbands, ella seburlava she was laughing. She was laughing about it, saying how good it is to live alone, the good way that one lived as a single person, pero aprobecaba. But she took the opportunity para manifestar las ganas qui de nia de jubilarse. But she took the opportunity to show or to demonstrate the desire that she had to retire quite a complex sentence from the grammar point of view in Spanish. But we got there with the explanation. Is there anything you want to pick up on there?
Pablo
Soltera or soltero? How well one lived being single.
Podcast Host
Yeah.
Pablo
And tercera Persona del singular.
Podcast Host
Mock something. Yeah. So I make fun of the stories that your mum tells you, basically. So can you to make fun of someone which is not. Not very nice. No. No. Okay. So she, this lady se vor lava di siendo. So she was teasing the others. Okay. Okay. We're getting close to the end of the text. However, we'll take a short break here and we'll come back in just a moment to finish it off. So the surprise arrived with the desserts.
Pablo
Podcast Host
Okay, so that is indeed a big surprise. So despues de pedier los cafes. So after ordering the coffees, la cuarta mujer the fourth lady. So she said that she had had a boyfriend since she had separated from her husband. Athea uno sanos a few years ago. Les digo con una sondrisa y normen la cara, she told them with a huge smile on her face. Chicas que me caso. Girls, I'm getting married. So some interesting things in here because we've got different pronouns, so les dijo to them, she said. That's an indirect object pronoun. Anything else that you want to pick up on there? Pablo.
Pablo
Espresol but it's something that we.
Podcast Host
Find difficult to translate.
Pablo
In English.
Podcast Host
I think when we start a sentence with K, it's like, the thing is that I'm getting married, you know, it's like building up to it. It's added emphasis. She doesn't just say, there's the it is very difficult to put that into English, I think probably we'd say something like, you know, you'll never guess what I'm getting my. I think that's the thing about language. When we go from one language to another, it's so often not necessarily just about the words. It's about the expression. It's about the intonation. Indeed, indeed. So that using that KE is something that is quite tricky. It's perhaps something that we'll pick up in our Spotlight videos for this episode. Okay, let's continue on. So immediately, straight away, las mujeres empezaro no gritar como locas. So they started to shout like crazy y abrasarla and to embrace her, to cuddle her, to give her a hug.
Pablo
Podcast Host
The best thing fue escutzarlas hablar de planes de voda was hearing them talk of wedding plans y divestidos and of dresses como si volviesen. As if they were going back to being together one afternoon. Des pues de las classes en la Universidad after their classes at university. Quite an image there. And we've got this lovely grammatical element there. Como si bolbiesin. So that is an imperfect subjunctive. We could also have said como si bolbjeran. So we always have two possibilities when it comes to the imperfect subjunctive. Bolbiesen or bolbie ran. So these both work, and they both are exactly the same. It's just depending on personal choice. Okay.
