Spanish Language Student
Super, super mon.
Podcast Host
Okay, okay. This is a really, really nice phrase to start the chapter, as if we were getting a little bit of weather forecast or weather report in the beginning. But there's a lovely expression.
Spanish Language Student
Venganda.
Podcast Host
Tell us about this expression.
Spanish Language Student
Signatura quest.
Podcast Host
Okay, so this questa, questa feels as if it comes from costar, as in it costs questa, questa mucho. But questa actually is a noun as well.
Spanish Language Student
Steep street.
Podcast Host
Yeah. So like, una questa is the kind of thing that you would see in a little. I don't know, I'm thinking of Fijiana in. In the Malaya province.
Spanish Language Student
Conquestas super empinadas.
Podcast Host
Lots of narrow and steep streets. So if you imagine the steep street that you trying to go up, it's a hill. It's almost like a vertical climb. So I'm starting the week off on a difficult footing, something like that. In this case, she's starting the. Yeah, it's the week that she's starting. Estase mana se mesta ciend. It's feeling tough for me. Okay, Pero hoy el dia. But today there was a nice start to the day. The day dawned very nicely.
Spanish Language Student
Hace frio? Pero el cielo estades pejado me anima amantener lamente positiva.
Podcast Host
So hace frio, it's cold. Pero el cielo estad espejado. But the sky is clear. Hacique eso me anima amantener lamente positiva. So that animates me. It encourages me to maintain a positive mindset, frame of mind. Okay, so interesting. There you've got two different verbal constructions.
Spanish Language Student
Because the first is aversi te animas acoremo marathon.
Podcast Host
So there we're seeing it. We're seeing. If you fancy, if you've kind of got the get up and go to run a marathon, but. But there it's ani marse a feralgo. And likewise with the second one, no me animo, I'm not feeling like doing something. But we can also have something else that animates us. So, for example, in the case of the text, el cielo despecado le anima. Ay, savel. It encourages her. It pushes her to have a positive mindset. So it's the idea of something or someone that pushes you to do something. Not in this physical sense, but it encourages you to do something, or the idea where you push yourself to do something. Okay, let's continue on with the text.
Spanish Language Student
La tarde asido bastante tranquila. Pero ampasado por el bar los clientes habituales.
Podcast Host
Okay, so la tarte the afternoon hasido bastante tranquila has been quite quiet, quite peaceful. Pero an pasado por el bar los clientes habituales. But the usual customers came through the bar. They passed by the bar, they came in.
Spanish Language Student
En sumesa de siempre estavan Matias Jose Francisco Yantonio Juan do su partida de domino de los miercoles y comentando la situation politica y economica del pais, pitting the world, world.
Podcast Host
So in their usual table, or in their table of always estaban Matias, Jose Francisco y Antonio. So Matias, Jose Francisco and Antonio were in their usual table jura so partida de domino.
Spanish Language Student
Domino.
Podcast Host
No prefirotras. So they were playing their game of dominoes de los miercones. So it's a usual Wednesday game for me. And so they were talking about commenting on the political and economic situation of the country.
Spanish Language Student
Cuando mea cercado aponer les la segunda ronda. Antonio me abo el tu adecir lo contentos castan con Elena.
Podcast Host
Okay, here we've got lo contentos que Stan conelena Last time we saw lo felites que estan las abuelas y lo canzadas que Stan des poundo me a cercado apo nerles la segundaronda. So when I approached, and we've got the hacercarce verb in the perfect tense here. Cuando me e hacercado aponerles to literally to put to them la segundaronda, to take them their second round of drinks or coffees or whatever it happens to be. Antonio me abuelto adecir. Antonio told me again, and I love that expression, Bolber a ceralgo. Lo contentos que Stan conelena. So lo contentos. The happy they are that they are with Elena. How happy they are with Elena. Now, we've seen that exact construction in our previous episode where we were talking about the older ladies who were very happy. Lo felites que estaban de CER abuelas. I think it was somewhere. And so it's really nice seeing lo plus an adjective which has to agree with whoever we're talking about. Okay.
Spanish Language Student
Estam felites de aver al quilado porfin el piso quetenian para suijo que IR fuera por travajo.
Podcast Host
So they're happy. Estan felites de aver alquilado porfin. They're happy to have finally rented out El piso, the flat that they had for their son que se tuboquillir fuera portrajo who had to leave, go elsewhere for work. And if you remember, a couple of episodes ago, this flat was being hired out by Elena. Elena.
Spanish Language Student
La verda esque se que una yuda economica que biene muy bien. Por que estava nun pogua burados?
Podcast Host
So the truth is la birda es que se I know que esun ayuda economica. It's a financial help que les biene muy bien, which really suits them quite well. Porque estaban un poco a purados because they're a little short.
Spanish Language Student
Se las cuesta yegar afindemes un poquito quitas.
Podcast Host
Okay, so they are struggling a little to make it to the end of the month. We'll find out a little more when we come back after the break.

Podcast Host
Okay, so we're coming back to our text now and we've just heard about the fact that it's quite useful that Elena is renting out the flat. The apartment. Because it's quite useful for Antonio and Margherita, but they're loving it as well, aren't they? So let's continue. So you're always happy to take the leftovers, the extra stuff. Yeah. Okay, so me addicio que Margarita. So this is Isabel talking. He told me, Antonio told me that Margarita Lea preparado unas albondicas. That Margarita had prepared some meatballs albondigas, lovely, delicious meatballs for Elena. Esta manana this morning El Antonio and he, he took them down to her. To her house. To her flat. Perfecto. So just a little explanation in English. It's an interesting construction here because the se really in normal circumstances would be le. But let's explain exactly how this is happening in this phrase. Over to you, Pablo.
Spanish Language Student
Antonio abajado hay Elena unas albondigas. Vamos assistituir primero unas albondigas ballet.
Podcast Host
So again in English, Antonio took down some meatballs to Elena. And we're going to replace the meatballs first of all with a pronoun.
Spanish Language Student
Antonio, las a barrado hay Lena.
Podcast Host
So Antonio, las, referring to las albondigas abajado, took them down a Elena. To Elena. Okay, so far so good. Pablo, can we now put la salbondigas back into the sentence, but this time replace Elena?
Spanish Language Student
Claro antois diriamos, Antonio leavajado.
Podcast Host
Okay, and in this case, we would have previously mentioned who they were being taken to. So Antonio took the meatballs to her. Of course it's to Elena. We know that. But what happens when we're replacing both to Elena and the meatballs?
Spanish Language Student
Pues que tendriamos, Antonio. Le las a bajado yeno poquitorado.
Podcast Host
Yeah, that's le. It sounds heavy. There's a nicer way to do it. And say, lads, just run this together. It sounds so natural. So let's go through this again. Replacing the albondigas. We do that with las. Replacing. If we're only replacing a Elena, we can do that with le. However, when we replace both aielena and the albondigas, rather than saying le las, we make it say las. It doesn't change the meaning that se is not a new word or anything like that. It's simply making the le sound better. Okay, can we do that once more? But not with albondigas and not with Elena. So what if Isabel had prepared a coffee for Miguel?
Spanish Language Student
Isabel, a preparado. Un cafe a Miguel.
Podcast Host
Okay, so that's the full sentence. Let's start replacing things. So if we're going, start by replacing the cafe. And the crucial thing is here, we've already mentioned that cafe. It's already been discussed. We know that it's. We can hear her making the coffee. So who has she prepared it for?
Spanish Language Student
Miguel. So lo a lo apreparado.
Podcast Host
Miguel. So the lo referring to the cafe. Now let's imagine we've already talked about Miguel, and what has she prepared for Miguel? So the le there is the same, regardless of whether it's to a male or a female. It's le. Le a preparado. If it were more than one person, if it remembered Miguel and Antonio, then it would be les. Okay, so now what happens? Let's hear. Let's the listeners do this. First of all, so Isabel has prepared it for him. Pablo.
Spanish Language Student
Isabel. Se lo a preparado.
Podcast Host
So the se and the lo come before the verb and before the auxiliary verb too. And the lo is still standing for the cafe. And the se is replacing the length. One final question in this, we're probably taking it a little further than we need. What if it were Isabel told the ladies that she was going to close soon.
Spanish Language Student
Pueseria, Isabel, les dijo a la senoras que iva hacerrar pronto.
Podcast Host
So there we've got Isabel, les dijo a las senoras. So the les a la senoras refers to the indirect element there. So to them, to the ladies. So here, if we wanted to change to take out the ladies, we still need to keep in the lace. But if we wanted to replace all of that information that she was going to close soon, if that's considered as one piece of information, how would we say Isabel told them it Poz diriamos.
Spanish Language Student
Isabel se lo digo. And then we can add a la.
Podcast Host
Senoras if we need to. Yeah, Isabel CE lodijo. She told them it. What was it? She told them, which is that they were going to close soon. Interesting stuff, sisi. Okay, we've still got a little bit of the text to finish, so let's come back to it now.
Spanish Language Student
Para que la nina coma caliente que los roba come.
Podcast Host
Okay, so here we've got Antonio. This is an Antonio's voice. Para que lanina coma caliente. He's saying the girls should eat nice warm food. Young people today eat very badly. And then we've got another one of those kinds of. That's just sitting in there. It's kind of like a porque in this case, isn't it? So why have we got this parake and a subjunctive there? So the girl, obviously she's a girl in comparison to them, she's a grown woman. But pero I'm doing this so that the girl has something warm to eat. And it was said in a tono paternal, in a paternal tone. Okay, so would be like a dish with that you use a spoon to eat something with something warm and hearty. Okay, good. Let's continue. So I know that Elena is also very happy. So she's very happy to have found a flat or an apartment. Tan cerquita del instituto so close to. To the college, to the school. Why not just therca? Yeah, it could be very close, or it could just be like so nice and close to the school.
Spanish Language Student
Ademas al teneras su familia lejos, Antonio y margaritas son un gran Apollo para ella. Por que siente que hay alghi encirca que se preocupa por ela.
Podcast Host
Yeah. So what's more, ademas al tenera su familia lejos. And this is this idea of al plus the infinitive. But it's not just on doing something. In this case, it's more the fact that her family are far away. Given that her family are far away, Antonio, Margarita, Sunun, Grana Poggio paraia. They are a great support for her because she feels that there's someone close by se pra cupa poreia who's worried about her, who's looking after her. Quick question, Pablo. We've got altener a su familia lejos. There's not a specific person I know. If it were altenera su marido lejos or whatever, then there would be a specific person involved. But familia, I guess, is a group of people. So do we use the person there as well? Yeah. It's not just the fact that you have got your family close by is because you've got your family. Again, it's the intonation your family. Okay, so let's continue. We've got one more phrase to go through. So after listening to Antonio's words, despueste escucha la palabras de Antonio, la verdad es que me a cambiado el animo. The truth is that it changed my mood. Y e vuelta casa con una sensacion muy agradable. And I went home with a very nice feeling, a pleasant feeling inside. We were talking about the animar verb or animar. Okay, let's see if you can spot these animars and animar and animo in the reading of the text as we go through it one last time.
