Pablo
Mark
So we're going to find out more about what that means and indeed about what the whole chapter means. So let's go back through it now with Pablo reading each phrase.
Pablo
Mark
As ever, we're starting with a little weather report. Sigue haciendo. So this is sighe plus the gerund, which refers to a continuation of an ongoing state. So it is continuing to be nice weather. Un tiempo agradable fresco, fresh, pero muy soleado, but very sunny.
Pablo
La manana de hoy hacido agedriada. Yeso me enganda.
Mark
It's a great worda. It has been. This morning has been hectic, see, very busy. Yeso me encanta. And I love that. I love it when it's like that. I first came across Trajin in It is a really interesting set of songs by the Nicaraguan poet Ernesto Cardinal. And they talked about El trajin de caladilla. And it's actually called the misa campesina mi caraquence. And it's a really, really interesting set of songs in a liberation theology idea, which we probably won't go into in this podcast, but el trajin de cadadillasante si. The busyness of every day.
Pablo
Mark
Okay, so muchos grupos de touristas, many groups of tourists and pasado tomar churros. They came by to have churros que buenos the sort of fried dough before or after their visit. Al casco Historico. And that is the old town or the historic center of the town.
Pablo
Mark
Sorry, I just took a sip of my tea there. Okay, a motorcycle helmet. But it's used as this old town or historic center when you're talking about a town.
Pablo
Mark
Mi so los quientes decient. Do you know what's interesting about this? It's not really a sentence. There's no verb in it. No.
Pablo
Yeah.
Mark
Losientos de siempres. So the usual customers, the regular customers, consous desayunos with their breakfasts, aperitivos. There are aperitifs de mediomana of the middle of the morning y thermetitas de mediodia. And there are little beers of midday, their lunchtime day. So this is not all happening at the same time. It's happening over the course of the morning, the very busy morning.
Pablo
Mark
Okay, so more going on here. More explanation of the tragine Tamien los cafes de porlatarde. So also the afternoon coffees y las meriendas and the snacks. That's a really important cultural thing in Spain, isn't it?
Pablo
Afternoon snack, yeah.
Mark
Okay, so these are the meriendas, the algunos de los ninos del barrio of some of the children of the local area. Al salir del colegio when they got out of school, upon leaving school. Chiana probezado el dia soleado. So these are still the ninos who have taken advantage of, made them most of the sunny day. Paloma can mean dove or pigeon, can't it?
Pablo
Seriously.
Mark
Let's call it the dove park. I think a dove park sounds like pigeon park. Okay, let's continue on.
Pablo
Y declientes de aqui ye so I.
Mark
Love those days in Losque in which el var esta geno de vida. The bar is full of life de gente entrando isaliendo of people coming in and leaving, arriving and leaving y de clientes de aqui ya and of customers from here and there. A lovely, lovely image there. But the visit which most illusion did to me. So the one that made me most happy asido la de Miguel was the one from Miguel. In English we're saying the one from la the because la there is a pronoun referring back to la bicita oy mi addicio sunombre. So now we know his name. He told me his name today. Let's find out more about Miguel then.
Pablo
Mark
So this is the boy who did the interview a few days ago and he has come back to thank me. Avenido a agrede therme el cafe de la suerte to thank me for the cafe of good luck. So if we think back to chapter four, I think it was when Miguel, as we now know, was preparing for his interview and he got a free coffee, an offer of a coffee in the. In the cafe. And now it's time for him to pay that back seat.
Pablo
Mark
Oh, fingers crossed. It goes well. So seato maduotro. He had another to himself. It's that use of the reflexive just to make it a little more. So he had another one, another coffee. Esta ve sento in la varra. This time seated at the bar. Y me. And he told me que fuejenial that it was great. And today he has the second interview. Para la que solo quedandos candinatos for which a nice relative clause there. Para la que. For the one that for which solo quedan dos candidatos. There are only two candidates left.
Pablo
Mark
And also in the plural, it would seem would happen. Para los que para lasque. Just one thing to talk about there and that is quedar. It's a really, really versatile verb. It can mean so many different things. And here we're using quedar as in there are two candidates left. There only remain two candidates. Okay, let's continue. So today he was nervous. He was also nervous today, much more sure of himself.
Pablo
Mark
Okay, so me addicio que. He told me that la proxima ves que venga. This is great. The next time he comes. Now, that's a subjunctive there. And it's kind of like saying when he comes back, when the vuelva. We don't know if he's actually going to. Hopefully he will. So the next time he comes back, sera antes de entrada trajar will be before he is going into work, before he's starting work, and that he will invite me to the coffee that we agreed on. So this is when they. They agreed to. That he would buy the owner a coffee. A coffee if he got the job. And hopefully this is what's going to happen. Let's hope it's like that. Let's hope that's what happens.
Pablo
Con leche.
Mark
Okay. On leaving by the door, se a chocado con Elena. He bumped into. He bumped into Elena. Quien en el descanso del recrejo at school break time, y cafe con leze, who was coming for her usual half a piece of toast, which seems like a very small breakfast. So it's quite typical. I cafe con leze and white coffee. Oh, so Isabel is definitely imagining things here. I think they make a lovely couple. Literally means a monkey, isn't it? But it's a word that you can. You can describe a child as very cute. Okay.
Pablo
Pero yo estoy de cidida ayudar.
Mark
Excellent. Now, la celestina. La Celestina is a famous word of a work of Spanish literature. And I'm trying to think, was it Fernando de Rojas.
Pablo
Mark
Yeah. So this Celestina, the main character, was a matchmaker, basically. And I go between going between the different characters and bringing them together and manipulating all these relationships and so on. I'm almost certain we did La Celestina at university, but it was so long ago, I can't quite remember. I think this is the great thing about this understanding little bits of the culture of a country or countries where the language that you're learning is spoken. Because when you get these little, you know, these references, knowing the background to that completely. So Just that last sentence. Then let's go through it in total. Boy, ain pizar mi la borde felestina. I'm going to begin my job of matchmaker. So destiny or fate is already playing its role. It's taking its part. Pero yo estoy de ciridida ayudar. But I'm determined to help. But we'll need to wait until a future chapter to find out what happens, or if anything happens between Miguel and Elena. Let's go back through the whole text now, and hopefully now that we've gone through the language in detail, everything will make more sense.
Elena
