Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Let's go through it line by line.
Spanish Learner/Student
Now say me encanta que los dias en pies. En has largos meda muchi sima en el.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
You know, I love this time of year too, because I think the light always changes at this time of year, when the days begin to get a little longer. And for me, the light changes. It's the sign of spring. It's a sign of the warmth of the summer, even in Scotland.
Spanish Learner/Student
Subjunctive trigger Aki menkanta que los dias empie sen piece.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Exactly. Yeah. So I love that the days are starting to get longer. Que los dias en piece her mas largos meda mutisima energia. It gives me so much energy.
Spanish Learner/Student
Los arboles de las callas empiesan a dener flores.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So the trees of the streets are starting to literally to have flowers. They're starting to bloom, say. So it's always to start to do something. And we have the to do something in the infinitive in English, but in Spanish we need to add in that preposition. A hacer algo.
Spanish Learner/Student
Mienza ha centirce.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Okay, so cuanto me gusta la primavera how much I love spring. And this cuanto with an accent on it, we're kind of exclaiming how much how I love springtime. Although it hasn't officially started yet. Literally, already it starts to feel, and then it's reflexive, so you can already feel it. It's already being felt. So anque is one of those words that can trigger the subjunctive. And I think, you know, when you're learning and you're beginning to get used to using the subjunctive, you're thinking ah, ankhe. Right. I'm putting a subjunctive. But here it's a really good example because although it hasn't officially started yet there's no doubt it's a fact, Although it hasn't officially started yet. Anki hauno a. If we were talking about even if something hasn't started, then we might need.
Spanish Learner/Student
Something, and then we would say un que no haya empezado.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Exactly. Okay.
Spanish Learner/Student
Muy asido un diabonito dieno de buenas notifias.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So straightforward. Today has been a lovely day. Hoy asido un diabonito lleno de buenas noticias. Full of good news. I love those candidates. From the verb creer to believe en el destino. So I've always believed in destiny, Pero hoy masque nunca. But today, more than ever, me e.
Spanish Learner/Student
Sentido como el personaje secundario de una comedia romantica.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So me e sentido. I have felt like como el personaje secondario. Now, is that the same wording that you would use, let's say, in an awards ceremony where you've got a supporting actor or supporting actress? Is this a supporting character?
Spanish Learner/Student
Significa personaj secondarios.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Okay, so mei sentido como el personaji secundario. I felt like a supporting character or a secondary person de una comedia romantica in a romantic comedy.
Spanish Learner/Student
Los protagonistas so Miguel y Elena.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Ah, here's the big reveal. Of course we know because we've heard it already, but los protagonistas, the key characters, the main characters, the protagonists are Miguel and Elena.
Spanish Learner/Student
Hoys obre la una del medio dia hayegado Miguel.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So today around 1 o', clock, Miguel arrived. And we're using the perfect tense there. A LLE gado Miguel. Mainly because it happened today. It's very much linked to the present.
Spanish Learner/Student
Si, pero perfectamente. Diego. Miguel. Okay, yo estaba de entro el acostina terminal pre amanuel por me.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Okay? So yo estaba dentro. I was inside, in la cocina, in the kitchen. Terminando de aterona tortilla, finishing making a tortilla. Manuel. Pormi. When I heard Miguel, a personal amiguel preguntandole a Manuel, asking Manuel, por me.
Spanish Learner/Student
About me y aqui tenemos el classico ejemplo del arreduplicacion del complemento indirecto. Porque a Manuel exacto.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So preguntando le means asking him. And then we're saying, okay, who we're asking to Manuel. Manuel le a Manuel. Preguntando le Manuel Sali.
Spanish Learner/Student
And cuanto termineo?
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So I came out as soon as I finished making the tortilla.
Spanish Learner/Student
Presente guerras, okay?
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So al verme on seeing me. This is al plus the infinitive, but we've added in the me here as well. On seeing me Medijo entusiasmado, he said excitedly. No se siesora de tomarun cafe. Pero vengo ayin vi tarte a loque quieras. So I don't know if it's the time for a coffee, but I am coming to invite you or to, yeah, to buy for you aloque queiras whatever you want. And that whatever you want is triggering the subjunctive. So I have to thank you for your lucky coffee.
Spanish Learner/Student
Cece medio una legria enorme saber que lo habien contratado y que m pesava en el bufete en unos dias que.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Bien so medio una alegria enorme. It gave me an enormous joy. I was overjoyed saber to know que lu havien contratado that they had hired him or that he had been hired y que impe sava en el bufete en unos dias and that he was starting at the law firm in a few days.
Spanish Learner/Student
Si sisi, cuando estava contamdo melo todo llego Elena y se sento elabarra.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So while Miguel was telling me everything, cuando estaba contando melo todo. And there we've got condando, the gerund form me to me and lo it as in everything he was telling Diego Elena Elena arrived y secento en lavarra and she sat down at the counter. So, okay, let's pause there for a little break, and then we'll find out what happens after the break. Not every sale happens at the register before AT&T business Wireless checking out customers on our mobile POS systems took too long. Basically a staring contest where everyone loses. It's crazy what people will say during an awkward silence. Now transactions are done before the silence takes hold. That means I can focus on the task at hand and make an extra sale or two. Sometimes I do miss the bonding time.

Okay, so Elena has just arrived and sat down at the bar. And Isabel is ready to do the introductions. So los presente rapidamente. I quickly introduced them and she, meaning Elena le dio to him, gave Laenora buena Damien the congratulations too. So she congratulated him too. Okay, so en el bar in the bar avia cadavez mas genteel. There were more and more people coming in. I mean literally every time more, but you would never see that. So like increasingly. But increasingly sounds quite posh. I think there were just more and more people who were coming in for like the set menu. Same porloque. For which reason? Or just so I had to go and serve tables. That's a nice word. So we could say to get along or to click as well. So ellos sierra narlando muchorato. They kept talking for a long while. They seem to get along. They seem to hit it off. I wonder if this is a working day. Is Elena not. Should she not be at school? Okay, so cuando el seue when he left, Elena mepidio un menu del dia. She asked me for the set menu and she sat down at a table. We've seen lots of pre.
Spanish Learner/Student
Harvey el chico de lasmus.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Okay, so I'm guessing probably isn't a normal working day. So she's maybe organized her. So despise de comer after eating tenia su classe de conversacion Se manal. So she had a weekly conversation class con Harvey with Harvey, el chico de la Rasmus, the Erasmus student.
Spanish Learner/Student
Cuando leyeve el cafe me confesso que Miguel le havia parecido monissimo.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
I love that one. So cuando le j? Vel cafe. When I took her the coffee, mais confessor, she confessed to me, miguel, le havia parecido monissimo. That Miguel to her had seemed monissimo, really cute, really good looking. So mono. Mona can mean good looking in that sense, but can you also use it for cute, like if you're describing an animal? So we've got a future tense there. Do you think he'll return? Yeah. Do you not think he'll come back?
Verizon/Workday Advertiser
Yeah.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
So they're subjunctive when it's no crier here with a future. Do you think he'll come back? She asked me. So Isabela's making her statement there. I hope he comes back. Y se ven de nuevo. We see each other again. So we've got two subjunctives there. And it's interesting that we don't need to repeat the kitchen.
Spanish Learner/Student
No, no.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Good. We've seen quite a few subjunctive triggers in this episode. We've seen menkanta que also loke quiras, which I always like. And what else have we seen? We've seen some interesting verbs. We saw a perfect. We've seen some benefits. Imperfect. Yep. Lots of. And we've also seen some expressions with dar.
Spanish Learner/Student
Si.
Podcast Host (likely Mark or Pablo from Coffee Break Spanish)
Has that got something to do with the Spotlight video? Perhaps. So we've got these Spotlight videos where we talk in greater detail about some of the elements of the episode. But I'll tell you a little more about that after we hear the text again and listen out for these dad expressions and the subjunctives and the tenses. So let's hear it now at a more normal speaking speed.
Spanish Learner/Reader
Me sentido como el personaje secundario de una comedia romantica. Los protagonistas son Miguel y Elena hoy sobre la una del medio dia agegado.
