AKA the COVID 3 tailgate. We got updates on injuries. Yes, we see you in there. We've got updates on the late night action because yes, in the tailgate they have come and they said what in the world happened in San Diego with Cal? Yeah, we will diagnose that and so much more. Of course we are going to be reacting to the new changes in the AP Top 25. We've got our brilliantly boring wins of the week and a nice assessment of the quarterback landscape from across the country. But before we get into it, you know we this is a big day for looking back and pushing things forward to DK Lincoln, Nebraska, the rail yard. I thought y' all setup was cool. Got got a lot of fans who hung out, a lot of fans moving around. Some traffic scenes set the scene for us. What'd you think about your trip to Nebraska?
Bud Elliott
It was awesome. The only thing that was missing was a win like that. Really every other aspect of it was phenomenal. The people as you would expect, very welcoming, rabid, passionate fan base, friendly, cordial guy gave me his hat on the plane from Atlanta to Omaha. Matt Rule was Great. He really felt like something special was brewing. Pregame was awesome. Flyovers. And then the game unfolded. And it hit us pretty quickly because we got in the field right during the first possession. Like, we missed the kickoff. We were walking through the tunnel and just watching the lines of scrimmage. It was pretty evident who the better team was. Like, if you could ask me to switch my pick, I'd been like, oh, I might go with Michigan if I could. Yeah. But it was. That was the only thing.
Chip Patterson
So even at halftime, you had seen enough at field level to understand which way this thing was going, because it. You know, without this through the stadium, they get that last push, they get a couple breaks, and of course, they get the wild play. You know, the. The heave to the end zone right before halftime. Even then, you were like, yeah, but it is. Yes, football here. And that's. It was.
Bud Elliott
And a lot of the time was watching kind of behind Dylan Raiola in that first. He was. There's a lot of pressure on him. He's running around. I know Tom went off on him. I would tend to agree. I think the stat line was very misleading. Like, if you walked away from that, like, well, he had 300 yards, and he had three touchdown passes. I mean, it really came down to three plays. He had the Hail Mary, had the beautiful touchdown pass in the first half, and then he had the late drive down the field when Michigan really was just kind of playing prevent. But the lines of scrimmage. And then I would say on the. On the offense or the defense side of the ball for Nebraska, it was evident, too, that they clearly were starting to establish things in the ground game.
Chip Patterson
Game.
Bud Elliott
And that was the thing that was kind of disappointing in the fourth quarter when they were down 10. The crowd, which had been epic all day, they were losing energy, and you could tell they were pretty deflated. And they came back to life a little bit during that last drive, but then couldn't get the onside kick. But it was great. It was great atmosphere. They were awesome. I'd recommend it for anybody who's a college football fan to go see the sea of red. They delivered. Bud Crawford was there. You know, I know he was there leading out the team. And then he also did something in the fourth quarter where he. He wound up one of those things that Michael Irvin was doing.
Chip Patterson
Oh, yeah, they're all copying the Carolina.
Bud Elliott
That's right. They are copying the Carolina Hurricanes, the originators of it. Tom Osborne was in the house. Tommy Frazier was there. Like, they were celebrating the 95 national championship. Couldn't say enough about Nebraska. It was awesome.
Tom Fernelli
Do you have a Runza?
Bud Elliott
I'm on green. Was that. I did not. Somebody hit me up. It's like, you gotta try a Runza. And I was like, is that gonna make me runs to the toilet?
Tom Fernelli
It might.
Bud Elliott
Because I didn't know what it was. And I googled a picture. I guess it's like a pocket sandwich.
Tom Fernelli
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
The way it was described.
Tom Fernelli
It's a very midwestern thing.
Chip Patterson
Yes.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. I'm on green on the set was great, y'.
Tom Fernelli
All.
Bud Elliott
He's awesome. What a great dude. Really good guy. Yeah, it was fun.
Chip Patterson
It was a fun show to as. As always and as everybody should. I had college football pregame on in the house as we were doing stuff around on Saturday mornings. It was. It was a good look. Y' all did a great job out there. Glad you are back here safely. All right. Well, every single Monday, one of the things we like to do is to react to what we have seen some of the voter behavior in the AP top 25. So let's check it out. Let's slide on down that poll. All right. Now, I'm. I'm very interested here because I. I don't know if Danny realizes how influential he has become. Okay. An internal memo from among high level editorial voices raising awareness around Danny's top 12 and others aggregating it for possible incorporation and in places it may not be landing across platforms and discussions of the rankings every week. It is notable because Danny has Miami number one and the polls have Ohio State in the top spot. So just a heads up in internal high level memos bringing the DK top 12, which of course, as we all know, comes down to gotta earn it.
Bud Elliott
Resumes.
Chip Patterson
Got it.
Bud Elliott
Resumes.
Chip Patterson
So Miami has seven first place votes in the new AP top 25. That is more than Penn State. That is more than Oregon. That is more than Oklahoma. It is significantly less than Ohio State's 52. But Miami moving up from number four to number two is some of the. The. We did not have a ton of movement within the top 10. But this certainly stands out as one of the biggest adjustments here. Dk, did Miami, as your number one team in the country do. Are you encouraged to see the AP voter starting to jump on board as well?
Bud Elliott
Yes. Clearly they are watching the DK top 12 very closely and probably adjusting in the process. I do think it was one of those games, though, that you looked at and it wasn't the prettiest, but I think that's what great teams do. Like they find a way to win when maybe their offense isn't clicking the way it had been earlier in the season. You know what else great teams do? They dominate the line of scrimmage. We were just talking about that. Michigan, Nebraska. It is becoming evident that Miami's offensive and defensive lines might be among the elite, you know, crews in the entire country. Able to get a back over 140 yards, able to get after the quarterback all day. And I do think it's interesting because I've started to notice a lot of push and a wide open Heisman Trophy race that a Miami defender's name is starting to come up from some people. 1 Reuben Bain, who did have a half sack, had two tackles for loss but was pretty much wreaking havoc all night long. He is a special player. I don't know if I would back that from a gambling perspective. It is hard to win that award, but that was all it was. It was dominant to me. It does come back to the resume though. I know Florida's like oh it's Florida, but it's still an SEC school. USF still link was a really good win the way they dominated that game. And Notre Dame, like who's has better complete body of work than the Miami Hurricane so far.
Danny Cannell
The the issue there is that Miami is not going to have the remaining primetime games for him to sniff the Heisman like you get Louisville in two weeks or three weeks, you get Florida State in two. But then turn the page to November. Stanford's awful. SMU is looking like a seven, five, you know, type team. Q may make a bowl, maybe not, you know, NC State very much teetering on bowl eligibility. You know, Virginia Tech is obviously like they're a zombie team at this point. Like if you look at what who played on defense over the weekend, it's pretty clear they have a lot of guys who are injured and probably looking towards the portal and then they finish at a pit team who has Eli holstein, who's the second worst rated passer in the Power 5 by PFF and has three times as many turnover worthy throws as he does big time throws this year. So I just don't think they're going to be in the national consciousness enough. Even if they're like a top five team. Like they might get some decent time slots but I don't think those slots will rate, you know, compared to like somebody from the power two leagues.
Tom Fernelli
But what if we just come on the show every episode and talk about how Reuben Bain should win the Heisman.
Danny Cannell
It worked for Tyler Warren.
Tom Fernelli
That's what I'm saying.
Bud Elliott
I, unfortunately he'd have to, he'd have to be leading the country in sacks. You know, where he's not. He's got to pick up the slack there. But I do think it would be an opportunity to buy Carson Beck potentially low as he's fallen a little bit because he wasn't great. And you mentioned the schedule. He may not have prime time opportunities. He's going to though, against, you know, Florida State in a couple weeks. But he could, he could amass. It could be a stat padding season for Carson Beck. So at the end of the year and if Miami does get to the ACC championship game and won it, that could be the only opportunity he would need right before the votes are submitted to have that chance. So I think Carson Beck's probably the one from Miami should back Danny to.
Danny Cannell
Report on the D line, man, I, I think it's the heavy handedness of guys like Bain and Mezador, like they, they have enough speed, but the like the power rush those guys have off the edge. Nobody in the country has something like that. Like, you might like Oklahoma's D line better. I get it, because Marvin Jones Jr. Is finally being what Georgia and Florida State hoped he could be. But I mean like that, that power rush off the outside, especially with how they play the run game, is incredible.
Chip Patterson
Yep. Tom. Bud, what stood out about the. The new rankings as they have reset as we prepare for a loaded week five schedule.
Tom Fernelli
I was happy to see LSU drop because we talked about it last week how based on their wins have looked since those games have been played. There was really no reason to justify including LSU as high as they were. And I think Miami deserves to move up. Other than that, there weren't really any ballots that were crazy to me. But my favorite thing was just kind of looking at the teams where you. There's so many varying opinions on like.
Chip Patterson
Oh, like who's the biggest, like widest gap between our highs and lows.
Tom Fernelli
Yeah, like the teams people can't really seem to get a, a read of. Like Mizzou was as high as ninth on one ballot and it was unranked on others. So it's like that's a huge gap. Although I will say the person who ranked him knife did go to Mizzou. So there's.
Chip Patterson
Whoa, whoa, whoa, we're talking about journalists here. That's, I mean there's like Mizzou, Syracuse, Northwestern, you know, you've got, you got a decent.
Tom Fernelli
There's like a 33 chance. Somebody who voted in the AP poll went there. Yeah, I get it. But he's still the second biggest Mizzou fan behind me. Notre Dame is high as 10th, but unranked on 24 ballots. Like, that's. That I understand, because they're 1 and 2, and we talked last week how they shouldn't be ranked until they at least win one game. There's no reason to put them on your ballot. So clearly some people are still clinging to that. Auburn, after their loss, still as high as 14th, but also left off of 37 ballots. Tennessee is as high as ninth, but also left off some ballots. Alabama as high as 10th, but also left off some ballots. Just a lot of variance in these teams, and five or four of the five come from the same conference.
Chip Patterson
Interesting. The. The Notre Dame thing is in. You said 24. That's almost a third. That's. That's a third of the voters here, not including Notre dame. So that 10th is the way the voting points work. That 10th is doing a lot of work to have Notre Dame at 22nd. You throw out that ballot, they're unranked, probably.
Bud Elliott
Do they do like a golf handicap. Do they throw out the outliers, like the high and the low, because.
Tom Fernelli
No, that's all.
Bud Elliott
Somebody has them at 10, which is clearly going to weight that pretty favorably towards Notre Dame, which is absurd.
Tom Fernelli
Kirk Kenny had him at 10, Danny's boy Cokey had him at 13, and then Brett McMurphy, our friend, had him at 15th. Those were the highest. And I do feel like if you. If those three just moved them down a little bit, Notre Dame's probably not ranked at all.
Danny Cannell
Yeah, I totally respect what Cookie did, man. LSU played a nobody this week. He used the ballot to get a bunch of clicks. Like, I mean, just be honest about it, but I. I respect the hustle, but anything numbers up, man, look good for Gannett, right?
Chip Patterson
Anything stand out to you, bud?
Danny Cannell
So we have 25 undefeated P4 teams right now. Like, that's still a lot of movement left to come. I. I don't think Utah should have been dropped out, to be honest. Texas Tech looked really good to me, and that game kind of, you know, kind of spiraled a little bit with some of the turnovers. I. I think Vanderbilt's pretty damn good, man. Honestly, I don't really know why Florida State drops. I mean, their resume, to me, is. Is better than what LSU has right now. Like, Florida looks like crap. Clemson looks like crap. Florida State, you know, beat Alabama by two Touchdowns and Alabama has looked great in all their other games. So I mean I make make the case for LSU of Refsu.
Bud Elliott
At least they have multiple power four wins.
Danny Cannell
I'm okay with that against teams that aren't going bowling.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, yeah.
Tom Fernelli
I'd still rather I still. I'm gonna value Clemson more than I'm gonna value beating the dog piss out of Kent State.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, sure.
Danny Cannell
Yeah.
Tom Fernelli
But I also, I mean I Understand none of LSU's wins are as impressive as Florida State going on the road beating Alabama 14. So if you want to go by best win, I, I have Florida State ahead of LSU on my ballot. So I'm not disagreeing with you, but I just feel like there has. You have to. You know, even if Florida and Clemson aren't good, it's still two wins that are better than the rest of Florida State's wins.
Danny Cannell
At least have Georgia over them. Like. Yeah, pretty clearly better than Clemson. Georgia went on the road and beat Tennessee. You could say they basically played them, you know, to a draw. That was a last second field goal that was missed. But like Georgia to me has looked better than LSU has.
Bud Elliott
Are you guys. I got to be careful with this one because Indiana fans low key are annoying AF first I've heard. I mean I there maybe there's just a few of them that come at me. I thought that was a massive jump. Now the win was impressive, but it still is just one win. And as Tom pointed out, the secondary was decimated going in and they lost some players there. They were into their credit. They were able to exploit it and it was another Big Ten opponent who was really good. I thought it was a little bit too much of a jump.
Tom Fernelli
I don't know if you thought Illinois was a top 10 team last week and Indiana beats them by 53. I'm gonna have a hard time disagreeing with you for putting them in your top 10.
Danny Cannell
I didn't think Indiana was a top or Illinois was a top 10 top 10 team last week, but I did think they were like a top 20ish team. And beating somebody by a like 40 something or 50 something is insane.
Chip Patterson
I mean, yeah. As Tom mentioned, the fact that their substitution patterns matched what they did against Indiana State and against Kennesaw State when like Alberto gets in there and backups are in there and this is a conference opponent against a good team like.
Tom Fernelli
A non conference game.
Chip Patterson
Jeez. Yeah, I mean that's the thing is we're going to talk about brilliantly boring wins of the week. That was that. That was clinical. That wasn't boring like that was. That was abusive. We should turn you in. We're have to turn Indiana into HR now.
Tom Fernelli
Shout out to our colleague Chris Hassell, who was talking a lot of crap about Illinois. I just want to remind you, Chris, Indiana is coming to Iowa City this week. Just be ready.
Chip Patterson
You don't think that's a trap game?
Tom Fernelli
No, I don't think Indiana has truck.
Bud Elliott
I think Indiana. I think there's a few teams. I think Oregon's one of them because the way their postseason ended. I also think Indiana is one that feels offended because not only did they almost get left out, but after losing to Notre Dame, everybody was like, see? They don't belong. And I thought that was messed up because I hate playing the results like that. And I actually thought they played okay. They got sideways. That happens. It happens to a lot of people. And we talked to Signetti in Las Vegas at Big Ten media days. I think there was still a lot of frustration that they want to take out anytime they have that opportunity to. So if there's an opportunity to run it up, they're going to take it.
Chip Patterson
Yep. Anything else? Again, as we said with tomorrow's top 25, on Saturday night, you had six of the top 14 teams didn't even play last week. You know, there was. There was a lot of sort of, you know, stale movement within the rankings, but now Oklahoma gets the predictable bump up a few spots. Auburn does hang on. Tom, what about the Illinois side of this? Do you agree, disagree, feel one way or the other about the fact they did hang on. I projected they would fall out, but they do end up hanging on inside the top 25.
Tom Fernelli
I'm not surprised they hung on. I didn't have them in my top 25 that we submit for the 136, but I. That's just how a lot of voters work. They just. You slide down. It's the 53 point aspect of it doesn't matter. It's just. It's a loss. I'll punish him. I'll only put him at 20.
Chip Patterson
Hey. Hey. But also to support them, you went on the road against a very, very good team and you took a loss.
Tom Fernelli
You also take a loss. You took a beating.
Chip Patterson
Belt to ass. Yeah. All right. Coming up on the other side, we go under the hood. Upon further review and some notable injury updates and some notable budget updates. We'll explain and more next.
Tom Fernelli
Let's face it, after a night with drinks, I don't bounce back the next day like I used to. I have to make a choice. I can either have a great night or a great next day. That is, until I found Pre Alcohol Zebiotics Pre Alcohol Probiotic Drink is the world's first genetically engineered probiotic. It was invented by PhD scientists to tackle rough mornings after drinking. Here's how it works. When you drink, alcohol gets converted into a toxic byproduct in the gut. It's a buildup of this byproduct, not dehydration, that's to blame for rough days after drinking. Pre alcohol produces an enzyme to break this byproduct down. Just remember to make pre alcohol your first drink of the night. Drink responsibly and you'll feel your best tomorrow. Every time I have pre alcohol before drinks, I notice a difference the next day. And even after a night out, I can confidently plan on going to the gym or golfing the next day without worry. Fall is right around the corner, so that means it's time to raise a glass to your favorite team. Whether you're tailgating, enjoying a college game day, or watching Sunday's action on the fancy new TV, don't forget ZBiotics pre alcohol probiotic Drink. Back here on the COVID 3 podcast. Now it's time for the brilliantly boring Wins of the Week, brought to you by PNC bank, where we highlight the boring actions that make the biggest difference. Financial wins and football victories don't just happen. They're built on dedicated, consistent, often unseen work behind the scenes. It's the tactical moves and plays that create the foundation for for the show, stopping moments in life and on the field. And when I was looking for somebody who just put together a meat and potatoes performance. Danny I'm going back to Lincoln. I'm going back to 290 rushing yards on 31 attempts from this Michigan team, the 149 of them coming from Justice Haynes. But then you get a long run from Jordan Marshall, a long run from Bryce Underwood. You were field level. You mentioned it a little bit at the top of the show. Do you think that this Michigan performance is going to be what we should expect from them in terms of leaning on that ground game for many more brilliantly boring wins in the future?
Bud Elliott
Yes, I do. This team very clearly has an identity. I know against Central Michigan, there was a lot of conversation about, oh, Chip Lindsay. He's allowed to cook now and he can open things up. I do think that was more about the competition there's still a team that wants to be physical. They want to run the football. And the thing that I think makes them dangerous, Bryce Underwood, I think he's. I mean, obviously everyone thinks he's special. I had my doubts and his numbers weren't great, but I thought he was in complete control. He was very poised. He did exactly what they asked him to, didn't make the big mistake play. And there were a couple plays he just missed. And I went back and watched his game against Oklahoma. Same thing. But I do think he knows where to go with the football as soon as the game starts slowing down for him a little bit. And if he continues to develop, Michigan could be a really dangerous team at the end of the season because he's getting valuable experience right now and he's getting it with win in this case. So watch out for that boring team. That brilliantly boring team might become pretty special come November.
Danny Cannell
Also, do you know who is second in the nation in receiver drops?
Tom Fernelli
Bryce Underwood.
Danny Cannell
Bryce Underwood. And that Michigan receivers have dropped 11 balls so far this year. Like, those receivers suck. If he had. If he had an average P4 receiving core, like if you give them Nebraska's, they win that game by 40.
Chip Patterson
All right, those were the brilliantly boring wins of the week, brought to you by PNC Bank. Brilliantly boring since 1865. Brilliantly boring since 1865 is a service mark of the PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. PNC Bank national association member, fdic. I mentioned that we had a budget update of sorts. I know that you were. Bud. You've been dialed into this on the Virginia Tech side. You want to illuminate what this means for the Hokies and their coaching search, which is officially ongoing. Though obviously we're not expecting much movement till later.
Danny Cannell
Yeah. So Doug Bowman of V2 Scoop, our excellent tech site for 24.7oftentimes, joins us there on Summer school School. He reported today that Virginia Tech is going to increase their athletics budget by $47 million. So, yo, that. That is totally stepping up to the plate there. He also reports investment will grow over the next four years to approach 212.5 million by fiscal year 2029. This is in conjunction with the meeting they had last month where athletic director Whit Babcock told the board of.
Bud Elliott
Everybody has a different thing.
Danny Cannell
It's like Board of Governors, Board of Regents. I guess there's the Board of Travelers or something like that, which is kind of a dope name, to be honest. But he said that our expectations don't match our spending. And so if we want to have high expectations, we need to have some spending. And I don't know exactly where the money's going to go here, but to me, Tech was very different than in Wisconsin. Like, to me, Wisconsin is spending and Fickle's just not winning.
Bud Elliott
Right.
Danny Cannell
Tech, I don't think was spending. And it was very clear that the top SEC programs were treating Virginia Tech like a farm team. And maybe this helps stop that a little bit.
Tom Fernelli
John Mayer and the Board of Travelers, that's a band you go see.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, yeah. It. The, the board of visitors meeting is set for September 30th. Internally, Virginia Tech is very excited to let anybody and everybody know about how they are going in and they are going hard because that is the messaging that they need to send to candidates that are going to ask, what am I going to get to come to Blacksburg right now? I mean, this is as every athletic department that is not currently in the Southeastern Conference in the Big Ten is looking at that 2029, that 2030, and just sort of thinking about all the different ways that college sports and college football specifically are going to be changing. There is soul searching going on. The Virginia Tech story is not just a Virginia Tech story. That this is what a lot of schools are having to think about because the price of poker is going up because those, those very, very top programs are going to continue to push the limits. And Virginia Tech was already falling behind, not playing in the same ballpark as the very top programs. So this is, this is definitely something that I don't think will be the only place where we see these kinds of decisions being made.
Tom Fernelli
What's crazier to you three like that Virginia Tech has just magically found 50 million they can add to the athletic budget or that adding 50 million to their athletic budget only gets them into the top third of the acc.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I thought that too, Tom. I was like, I don't know if that's that impressive. I don't know if when we get to 2029, this number is a, as, as eye popping as it is internally. Now, if you're in charge of fundraising and if you are managing the spreadsheets for Virginia Tech, you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, look at this year over year percentage increase. But if you're going to try to forecast out what the budgets are looking like at Florida State, for example, and Georgia Tech, and I joke about Georgia Tech, I don't joke about Georgia Tech. I'm just saying they're getting all this TV ratings money, are you kidding? They're cashing in. They gotta get all the TV bonuses. Yeah. I just, I, I wonder what it will be. But at least the intention is going is sending the message. And sometimes in college sports I've learned that the message that you're sending is the most important thing because money's not real.
Tom Fernelli
So it's true.
Chip Patterson
That's sort of my general read on that real quick.
Tom Fernelli
Tell all my bill collectors money's not real, bro.
Chip Patterson
Find a real job quick little one liner and then let me know if there's some, any others that we need to do before we go under the hood with upon further review. Officially. Yeah. Steve Angelli likely out for the year. Stinks. Syracuse.
Bud Elliott
I think it's official.
Tom Fernelli
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Okay. Is Tommy Castellanis okay?
Danny Cannell
He was dancing a lot on tick Tock after the game, so yeah, I think it's fine.
Chip Patterson
How does that make you feel, bud?
Tom Fernelli
Yeah, I was gonna ask.
Danny Cannell
Well, in the, in the off season I didn't love some of the tick Tock dances he was doing, but I do like that he has gone from being the worst rated downfield passer in the FBS to the number one rated passer in terms of big time throw rate this year. So dance away.
Tom Fernelli
The second they lose a game, I'm gonna blame the dancing.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I see Vols Fan 98 dropped it too. I was like, that's, that's, that's awfully Anthony Richardson. So you know, like how's the knee? Don't worry. He did backflips at the team hotel. He's fine. This is never going poorly, I promise. Any other injuries or sort of like status updates that we need to get of note? We're going to be back. By the way, we're back on CBS Sports Network on Tuesday. You can watch us live at noon eastern time will be. Obviously you can check out the show in its entirety and some of the good clips from it on YouTube.com Cover 3 podcast listeners will get the show in your feed as well. Then we're back here on Wednesday. I mean it's just a lot of big game breakdowns, Matt. Just a huge, huge, huge week in college football. We're excited to be doing that over the next couple days. So before we're back here Wednesday, any other like injuries or status updates we should note?
Danny Cannell
Quick rundown. So we noted the, the linebacker Matthews for Michigan State went like on the stretcher, he said that he'll be back in no time. So man, I hope that's true. That would be fantastic. Missouri offensive lineman Kaden Green, who didn't play against South Carolina, underwent a procedure, so I don't know how much more time he's going to miss, but Missouri certainly has a really tough schedule coming up after this week, so need to get him back. He's a really important piece for that offensive line. Virginia starting center Brady Wilson went down. I saw one report that he was on crutches in a boot, but I think that's incorrect because the photo that I saw, he had an ice bag wrapped on his calf, so I'm guessing like calf strain and that that's what Tony Elliott said that it was. Jacoby Lane didn't play against usc and I haven't seen anything else about that, but he really matters. That's like the closest thing we've seen to Plaxico Burris in the sport in a while.
Chip Patterson
So here's what I've got on that bud.
Danny Cannell
I need him.
Chip Patterson
I went. I went back to watch the. Actually, bud, you would be proud of me. I went back to find the videos of him running out of the tunnel for warm ups, you know, and then I found multiple videos of him going through stretches. He did go through the initial parts of warm ups, but the observation from the beat writers was that he would be. He did not look like he was going to be, like, pushing it. And so the assumption might be that they were saving him up for illinois, but a 100% a major item to watch because Jacoby Lane is. He's awesome. And. And that would be if. If they're down Jacoby Lane, are there other options? Is Makai Lemon good? Sure. But Jacoby Lane's a difference maker. I agree with you there.
Tom Fernelli
He's.
Danny Cannell
He's really good. Really good.
Chip Patterson
All right. Every single Monday, we like to take one last chance, one last chance to look back at the weekend that was. We go under the hood, we call it. Upon further review, there were terrible calls. Do you want to go ahead and jump in after further review? After further review. All right, bud, you've been fired up about quarterbacks. I hear you. Starting to hear you starting to drop some of these statistics already here in the show today. What's really stood out to you at the quarterback position?
Danny Cannell
I would say, like guys who I certainly was down on after week one who have played very well in weeks two and three, C.J. carr being one. In hindsight, Miami's defensive line is like that amazing. And he didn't play super well against Miami, but I think he's played really well in the last couple weeks, making big Time throws, getting the ball out on time, making the defense respect the whole field. And on the other hand like Ty Simpson I thought was making the right reads generally against fsu, but he was just late with the ball and like FSU had five PPUs in that game the last two games. And Wisconsin's defense certainly isn't amazing, but it's not, you know, horrendous. The ball is just out on time. So I like that he's seeing the field well. I like the ball is, is coming out. Another guy here to highlight. Do you know who leads the nation in turn or in big time throws minus turnover worthy plays?
Tom Fernelli
I do, but I read you show notes.
Danny Cannell
It's a 8th and Caliac Manus dude despite like a lot of drops, despite I think he's had 10 sacks and seven scrambles. The offensive line is just a total mass unit there for Rutgers right now. He's finally playing like the guy that Wisconsin thought they had. Remember the one you're like, oh, we got a dude here. The, the Greek rifle. And it turns out he just wasn't any good for them.
Chip Patterson
Wasn't it Minnesota? Excuse me.
Danny Cannell
Yeah, I want to say Wisconsin. Yeah, when he was at Minnesota. So good to see that like in a losing effort certainly, but he may prevent Rutgers from having an awful season.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, he's, he stepped up.
Danny Cannell
Brutal.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, he stepped up. He answered the call right there. That defense is falling absolutely apart. The run game is not there. If you have ever wondered what Rutgers would look like if they were just out there playing like what, what, what kind of hero ball is that? You know, when you've got the. Your quarterback's got to go get it done himself. 8th and Cali Manus is, is, is definitely all over it also.
Tom Fernelli
Inside. Yeah, I'm gonna start when I do my first mock draft this spring after the season. Oh, my bad, sorry. Just erase all that, Mikey. The live listeners will know that I'm gonna put Athe and Cali Commandis at 1:1 on my first mock draft. Just to see what happens.
Chip Patterson
Just to see what happened. Just to see if. Just to see if the mock draft. The mock draft enterprises the echo chamber.
Tom Fernelli
Let's find out how heavy that echo is.
Chip Patterson
Come on. Let' if Mitch Leidner. If Mitch Leidner can get first round NFL draft buzz, why can't Ethan Cali Manis? Come on. Come on.
Danny Cannell
Do you know. So we mentioned in the PNC segment that Bryce Underwood has suffered 11 drops. Do you know who leads the country in drop suffered? It's Malik Washington. Dude. Malik Washington is balling like that completion percentage is totally misleading. Maryland's receivers can't catch a cold and he's still. Eight touchdowns, one pick, making good decisions of when to leave the pocket in, in the run game. I think he's going to save Mike Loxley's job.
Chip Patterson
Hell, yes. Like, that's, he's so much fun, dude.
Tom Fernelli
They hit on him.
Chip Patterson
Yes. That was, you know, that was one of those games where there were two, obviously. Oh my gosh, Wisconsin is falling apart at the seams right now. Was, you know, kind of a big prevailing storyline developing as you're watching the game unfold, but then also just watching Malik Washington stand in there and make big throw after big throw. It's just, it is, it's, it's, it's really fun. I can't, I don't know why I find myself more enthused by this, but especially the idea that Maryland, they go, they join the Big Ten, they get put in the Big Ten East. They're just getting pounded just every single year. It just, it's been a while since, since Maryland football fans I think have had something to, to kind of get buzzy and be excited about and man, Malik having a really, really exciting young quarterback. I, I sometimes go on, I, I still, I sometimes go on the radio in Baltimore and at the beginning of the season they're like, what's a real expectation? And I was like, you develop Malik Washington and you keep him from transferring. That the only like goals for this season are to put in the building blocks because this fan base has really lacked for something that they can jump on hold of and be like, there is a plan here, you know, there I see a Runway. This is what year one looks like in year two. We want to see progression. And so to, to be able to have that and to have him be a local kid too. When you hired Mike Loxley, the goal was if there is a stud here in the area, then he's going to be able to use his own connections to go and lock them down. That comes through as well. So it's. As long as they can develop him, keep him healthy and hold on to him, that's, that's an exciting storyline that might not pay off in 2025, but at least we're going to continue to monitor moving forward with the Terps.
Tom Fernelli
I think they'll be able to hold on to him.
Chip Patterson
That's great.
Tom Fernelli
Give him a nice no show job at Under Armour, you know, go full Clippers. Just Kawhi Leonard's style He'll be there.
Chip Patterson
No show job. And what is it no show job in college athletics? What's the first reference that comes to mind?
Tom Fernelli
NCAA president.
Danny Cannell
College ball playoff committee consultant.
Chip Patterson
I was going to say that Syracuse car wash, remember the Syracuse basketball players, they all had jobs at that car wash. Didn't really require all that much actual work or attendance, but damn, that was some good stuff right there. I've got a few, I've got a few like, you know, quick hits or one liners. A little bit more off the radar stuff. Tom, Danny, any anything that you want to make sure we hit here in a pun for upon further review.
Tom Fernelli
The Calgorithm.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, we mentioned that.
Tom Fernelli
Yeah, they were, they were. I think it was 20 or 27 to nothing by the time we finished up the recap show. It finished 34 nothing. San Diego State win JKS. We've seen it now two weeks in a row. Like his final stat line was 1738 for 208 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions. And that's by far the worst game he's had so far this season. But we kind of saw. If you watched the Minnesota game, Cal 127 14. But you, you started to see in recent weeks like, like any young quarterback, when you get pressure on him, he does some boneheaded stuff. And I haven't gone back to watch this game. I haven't had a chance to do it.
Chip Patterson
Just.
Tom Fernelli
But looking at the stats, he was pressured more in this game than he was in any other game he's played so far and he had his worst game. He was pressured quite a bit in the Minnesota game and his numbers overall were not spectacular. So it's I, you know, the more you see the kid, the more that's going to be out there for teams to figure out what his strengths and weaknesses are. And they're starting to adjust and now he's got to adjust back. He still has a great arm, he still makes some incredible throws, but he's going to have to, you know, learn how to deal with that.
Chip Patterson
Did you see Justin Wilcox's post game press conference from this game? He called today one of the most important days of the season. He said this game, talking about the game of football. He's like, if you are not paying attention to your details, if you are not locked in, this game will make you pay. He my interpretation of the press conference and what he was talking about. He did not think that his team took this game seriously. And the ass whooping that they received from San Diego State was a reflection of that Cal is not. Let me try to make sure I'm. Cal is not good enough to take any game lightly. And I think that that was one thing that was revealed. And when Justin Wilcox calls Monday, he said, we gotta flush it. And Monday is going to be the most important game of the season. And so when he says that, he means that this is, this is going to be a tough film and this is going to be like a real, like a, A real moment where they're either gonna like, learn from their lesson and be better for it, or they'll probably just gonna be inconsistent the rest of the year. Capable of beating a power conference opponent like they did against Minnesota, capable of getting shut out by San Diego State and Snapdragon Stadium. So definitely something to, to keep an eye on moving forward. I don't think it was just JKS that I just from Wilcox did take a hit, though.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, it took a pretty rough hit on opening day. That was a rough IPO for jks. I have another quarterback related this one. The stock is on the rise because some people are saying there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in Oxford, Mississippi. There is no quarterback controversy. They have found their guy in Trinidad Chambliss, who's been absolutely outstanding through two starts, six total touchdowns, zero turnovers, two wins. And that's why Ole Miss is favored this weekend against LSU in their home game against LSU 330 this week.
Tom Fernelli
I.
Bud Elliott
Is this, this could get uncomfortable too, because Austin Simmons and this will be one where we find out just how much money comes into play. I'll be shocked if Lane goes back to Austin Simmons. If he does. It would tell me it's more about the price tag and the investment in Austin Simmons than it is about play on the field. But ultimately Elaine's got to win games and he can't lose the locker room. That's why I think they found their quarterback in Chambliss.
Danny Cannell
I, I think it would depend on how Chambers looks when they play some teams with real, real athletes on defense.
Bud Elliott
But you're still starting him.
Danny Cannell
Probably. But also it depends on like, like, I mean, the sample set is what, like seven ish quarters against, you know, a G5 team in Tulane, which is a really good G5, and Arkansas, which is. We, we had, we had trade video on summer school. Like, we have Arkansas sources. They knew they were cooked on defense in the preseason. Like, they knew they did not have players. So I don't put a lot of stock in him carving Arkansas. He did look great against Tulane. I, I mean, he's just taking care of the ball so well. I agree. And in Lane's offense, if you just let Lane scheme it for you and you make the open passes, you can go really far. LSU will be a different test.
Tom Fernelli
We, we also have seen Austin Simmons against Kentucky. That wasn't good.
Bud Elliott
Right?
Danny Cannell
That's true.
Bud Elliott
He's got four picks on the year. He wasn't good their first game either.
Chip Patterson
I would. It is it. I don't know who's the most plugged in here out of the three of you on the, on the Ole Miss nil matters. But is it almost certain Austin Simmons has is higher on the payroll than our D2 transfer from Ferris State?
Bud Elliott
Yeah, safe assumption.
Tom Fernelli
Hold on, let me, let me text my sources.
Danny Cannell
Do we think it's like. Do we think it's like.
Tom Fernelli
Yes.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I mean that's what I'm saying, Danny. I think that's a good point. How much does money play a factor? Like, is there somebody who is out there and financially invested in making sure that Austin Simmons was going to be the starting quarterback here?
Bud Elliott
I mean, and it's similar to the NFL. If you're a first round pick, you're gonna get more opportunities to fail than if you were a 5th round pick.
Tom Fernelli
Unless you're the New York Giants. Because then you're just gonna let us throw moon balls to nowhere while the crowd chance for Jackson dart and you don't send him in.
Chip Patterson
Hey, that 15th row is asking for it.
Tom Fernelli
He threw a ball.
Danny Cannell
Daniel Jones looking amazing once he gets away from the. The Giants, dude.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Tom Fernelli
Russell Wilson threw a ball into the fifth throw on fourth and goal.
Chip Patterson
Bro. Still getting NFL job, Mr. Unlimited. Yeah, that's that. What Speaking of quarterback controversy, Danny, do you have us a lean one way or the other on what you would do if you were Joey Maguire?
Bud Elliott
Like, I think it's a different situation because Austin Simmons wasn't playing great. I think you roll out Baron Morton, assuming he's fine from his concussion, which I would imagine, who knows how bad it is. But if he's, if he's foggy at all, then you say, hey, take your time. But I do think that's one where it puts pressure on Baron Morton to deliver and to go out there and continue his winning. Because I do think that gives you a luxury if he starts to struggle. You know, you have an exceptional backup behind him. I think that offense too is a lot about the system. It's a great system they're running. They scheme a lot of guys open too, and they've got some big playmakers on the outside that we're finding out about. So. But I think you give that one back to Baron Morton. I don't think there's a quarterback controversy yet.
Chip Patterson
Cool. Coming up on the other side, more of our notes from week four before we turn the page to week five and more next. What's up everyone? Back here on the COVID 3 podcast where you know, so not everything is gonna, not everything is gonna be able to, you know, stand out and be, be top of the line, top of mind as you're going through the, the instant reaction show. Sometimes it is, it's when you're going through and really trying to make sure you put together all your notes. And I was looking, I was like, man, there are a lot of, a lot of interesting non conference matchups. Did you realize I believe our friends at the shotgun start always have the game within the game, the game within the game between the Sun Belt and Conference usa. Did you all realize there was a conference challenge this past week? In week four, Sunbelt Conference usa we got a lot of regional crossover. So when you're looking for those regional foes, we got ourselves a Sunbelt CUSA challenge. And gentlemen, it was tight. Gentlemen, it was hanging in the balance all through the day. So things, you know, they get started with JMU whooping up on Liberty now, not a huge surprise given the way we've talked about this team at the line of scrimmage that is Sunbelt 1, CUSA 0. Oh, but then CUSA comes roaring back with Hootie Hoo Kennesaw State Taken down Arkansas state, Kennesaw State 28, Arkansas State 21. Oh, gosh. Now we're tied one to one. Then Bud, remember we were talking about it? Middle Tennessee jumped out on Marshall. Oh, God. Oh. Is. Is Cusa gonna jump in front and take this one right here? No, no, no. Tony Gibson's crew responds. Marshall 42, Middle Tennessee 28. Now it's 2 to 1 with the sun Belt lead. Then I know that we had Bud on Southern Miss. We had Tom Sprinklin, Southern Miss. But Louisiana Tech Sonny Cumby said, no, Sir. Louisiana Tech 30, Southern Miss 20. So it came down to the last game. It was 2 to 2, Sunbelt, CUSA and Ulm Bryant Vincent and the Warhawks get it done. Narrowly 31 to 25. Those are final scores that included 28, 21, 30, 20, 31, 25. Congratulations to the Sun Belt for winning the Sunbelt CUSA Challenge three to two here in week four.
Tom Fernelli
It's going to be huge for the NIT field.
Chip Patterson
Also, did you all see Toledo, Western Michigan?
Tom Fernelli
It happens every year.
Danny Cannell
He's the. The Mario of the Mac.
Chip Patterson
Did you see. Did you see how it happened?
Tom Fernelli
No, how did it happen?
Chip Patterson
They had. It was 4th and 10. They had Western Michigan dead to rights middle of the field. Gave up a 25 yard fourth down conversion and Western Michigan ran it all the way down to end up winning. They were up 13 to 7. Had him on 4th and 10 and couldn't get off the field. Gave up a long, long conversion. Western Michigan gets all the way to the end zone, walks it off 14 to 13. Every single year, Jason Candle gives us one of these. And now the Rockets pick up a conference loss that they definitely did not need. And yeah, the Mario of the Mac, as Bud just called him right there.
Tom Fernelli
Consistency.
Chip Patterson
Hey, you know what? You are right. At least. At least they are consistent throughout all of these things. All right, what else from the weekend?
Bud Elliott
I got one.
Chip Patterson
All right.
Bud Elliott
Upon further review, the Texas Longhorns social media manager should be fired.
Chip Patterson
Whoa.
Bud Elliott
For going out there and actually bringing attention to something that I don't think was a huge deal. Like, I didn't love it. But when Arch Manning goes over there and he steps over and stares down poor number six, who probably was caught off balance, if you want to be honest. And then he just stares him down. And not only once when it's like, told y', all, our quarterback had swagger. And then doubles down on it the next morning with another photo and it says, arch meets aura. You've already got a quarterback who clearly had struggled with his confidence. He's already got enough of a bullseye on his back, and now you just ramped up the stakes before. First game on the road in the sec. You should be fired after putting that out there. Arch has handled this great. He's making fun of. He's like, yeah, I probably should have got a penalty officials on me. My mom was mad at me. I was caught up in the moment. But you cannot be out there talking smack about your quarterback against Sam Houston in a game where he finally delivers. And it's been bad. And I was happy for Arch to be able to play his way out of that slump, but that was atrocious behavior. Somebody's got to take the phone away from that kid.
Tom Fernelli
Listen, whoever it is, listen. All Arch was doing was letting that kid know that y' all ain't scoring a point in the first half. You're not scoring a point in the second half either, because we are gonna bring home the sicko parlay. How dare you get in my way.
Chip Patterson
Did you. I. One favorite little side rabbit hole of this. I saw some BYU media digging up Steve Sarkeesian celebrations.
Tom Fernelli
Yes.
Bud Elliott
Did you see who that was against, though? Against Kansas State. Like, it was a good opponent.
Tom Fernelli
It was probably not. Not then. It wasn't. Not then. Kansas State was not good back then.
Danny Cannell
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
It's like, oh, yeah. You think Steve Sarkeesian is going to be mad about this? Let's review back to what this guy was looking like celebrating on the field.
Tom Fernelli
Kansas State was the Sam Houston State of the Big Eight at that point.
Chip Patterson
Oh, Jason. And the tailgate. Great point. UCF had a way better social media.
Bud Elliott
Not as good as they're. Not as good as whoever's AI that was. That had. That had Bill and Jordan going at it on the sidelines.
Danny Cannell
Oh, my God. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
That was so unbelievable. Here. I actually. I wouldn't say I got it pushed back, but there was a little bit of clarification, like, oh, my gosh. You guys did not. Like, you guys didn't talk Belichick more. You guys didn't, like, go. Go in on North Carolina or talk about, like, the. The UCF game more on the instant reaction show. And I. I guess I. I want to open this up because I want to make sure that I'm not. I sort of threw things out there like Tom, but I didn't get the idea that y' all were, like, super gassed up and excited to talk about it. And that's, you know, as I've sort of explained. It's like ultimately we're going to talk about the things that we find interesting the most. Now, you know, John Talty wrote a great column about, you know, the Bill Belichick experiment. And there were some, some other stories on CBSSports.com that did get a lot of traffic. Like there is data that shows that there is still interest there. So I wanted to make sure that I'm not, I'm not preventing anyone here on this podcast from voicing out a lot of interest in the, the train wreck that's going on right now. What, how much does this move your needle?
Danny Cannell
So the Belichick name is still clicking?
Chip Patterson
Yes, man.
Danny Cannell
Well, I, I think we really should talk about Bill Belichick here. If you look at the Bill Belichick coach, North Carolina Tar Heels like Bill Belichick is still early on in his rebuild. Bill Belichick probably made some miscalculations. I, I think in terms of the transfer portal and who they brought in early. But Bill Belichick has really done a nice job here of bringing in new staff. I think Bill Belichick has a great chance of long term success. There's at Carolina, like some different challenges than when you're with the Patriots. Bill Belichick has to face those. Obviously Bill Belichick does not have Tom Brady anymore, but definitely Bill Belichick is somebody that we should continue to monitor on this podcast.
Tom Fernelli
Those are interesting thoughts on Bill Belichick, but I will also remind you, bud, that when it comes to Bill Belichick and his very slow start at North Carolina when Deion Sanders first came to Colorado, Buffaloes also got off to a very slow start in the second year. Deion Sanders and Dur Sanders and Travis Hunter in the Colorado Buffaloes really all took a step forward. So we should not write Bill Belichick off. There is still a chance that Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels could come together in year two and take a tremendous step forward. And maybe Bill Belichick can add a college Football playoff title to his super bowl rings.
Bud Elliott
And you know what else? He had Deion Sanders at least had Shador Sanders who was on his team that was able to play pretty well for him, even though Shador's draft stock dropped. You know what else? He doesn't have Arch Manning about playing quarterback for him because Max Johnson or whoever he's playing a quarterback isn't Arch Manning. So Bill Belichick has his hands full. Clearly.
Danny Cannell
One thing Bill Belichick did in New England is that he sometimes used Players like Mike Brable two ways. And I think if you look at what Deion Sanders did with Travis Hunter, that is something maybe Bill Belichick should consider doing here at North Carolina. You have a couple players on UNC who are probably way better on both sides of the ball than what Bill Belichick has on that single side of the ball.
Chip Patterson
I mean, it's not a. As I said Saturday night, it's not a good football team.
Bud Elliott
No.
Tom Fernelli
Who Bill Belichick's team.
Chip Patterson
Bill. Bill Belichick's football team is going to generate lots of rumors about coaching searches and futures and contract. Buyout Bill Belichick. What is Bill. Robbie Callan, CBS Sports Buyout Bill Belichick.
Bud Elliott
And Tom Brady ain't walking through that door.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. Yeah.
Tom Fernelli
Watching the Bears dominate.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. They, North Carolina will be off this week. Then they return to action in Chapel Hill on October 4th against the Clemson Tigers, who are in their own world of hurt. I mean, that is the, the saddest game between two hall of Famers and their own respective sports as, as we've seen in quite a long time. Then they're off again. Then they go out to play Cow, then North. I mean, it's just, just kind of a wild, wild series. Wild part of the schedule right now for, for North Carolina.
Danny Cannell
Do you know what I don't think you would have seen, though? Like, if Arch Manning played for Bill Belichick, you would have never seen Bill Belichick tolerate Tom Brady flexing on somebody like Arch Manning flex on the guy. So I think the Bill Belichick standard and the Belichick way certainly would not have tolerated that behavior from Arch Manning.
Chip Patterson
He did chew out Max Johnson. I had not seen Bill. I've, I've not been dialed into Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick chewed out his quarterback after, after making a mistake on, on a third down play in, in the game in the loss to ucf.
Danny Cannell
You know, who do you think would make sense for the Dallas Cowboys?
Tom Fernelli
Oh, God. After what I thought yesterday. Yes.
Chip Patterson
Bill Belichick, Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones, coaching rumors based like yesterday.
Tom Fernelli
While calling a football game with the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Brady talked about being chewed out by his coach back when he was playing in the NFL. And you know who that coach was? Bill Belichick, who now coaches the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Chip Patterson
There we go. Anything else from the weekend? That was.
Tom Fernelli
Six, seven. I'm just, I'm really going into it now.
Chip Patterson
Just keep going all the way. All right.
Danny Cannell
Who if the top three running backs in college football or the top five running backs in college football are the two Notre Dame kids. Justice Haynes, Ahmad Hardy and Wayman Jordan. Who's six.
Tom Fernelli
No, you got me. I don't want to leave somebody out here.
Bud Elliott
I don't know.
Danny Cannell
I feel like we have a really good five.
Tom Fernelli
I don't know if there is a six. I mean, it could be Nick Singleton. Yeah. But it's. Until they play a team, it's. I'm not including them.
Bud Elliott
Mark Fletcher.
Danny Cannell
He'S been great.
Chip Patterson
Did you say Jonah Coleman? We talked about him on Saturday night.
Danny Cannell
I did not say him.
Tom Fernelli
Jonah Coleman, stat wise. But we also need to see.
Chip Patterson
But I think John Coleman's a good player. Like, for sure they're good. Y' all like good yards. But that's a. Wayman Jordan, for example, is one of those. Like, I did not come into this season with Wayman Jordan on my list. And then you watch him play, you see what he's able to do. You're like, oh, wow. Okay, here we go. You know, Jonah Coleman's been on my list as one of the Big Ten's best running backs already.
Danny Cannell
There's a kid in Raleigh who's pretty good. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Hollywood Smothers.
Tom Fernelli
Yeah, Hollywood Smothers does.

Hosts: Chip Patterson, Tom Fornelli, Danny Kanell, Bud Elliott
In this episode, the Cover 3 crew reacts to the latest AP Top 25 poll, dissects major storylines from a packed college football weekend, and previews an absolutely loaded Week 5 slate. They offer up keen insights into notable team and player performances, discuss the growing influence of Danny Kanell’s personal rankings on the national conversation, address injury and coaching updates, and shine a light on the rapidly shifting quarterback landscape. The tone is lively, banter-filled, and at times humorously irreverent, making for an episode both informative and entertaining for any serious college football fan.
"It is becoming evident that Miami's offensive and defensive lines might be among the elite...able to get a back over 140 yards, able to get after the quarterback all day." (Bud Elliott, 07:43)
“Miami is not going to have the remaining primetime games for him to sniff the Heisman...I just don't think they're going to be in the national consciousness enough.” (Danny Kanell, 09:02)
“Mizzou was as high as ninth on one ballot and it was unranked on others... Notre Dame as high as tenth, but unranked on 24 ballots.” (Tom Fornelli, 12:01)
"Indiana is one [team] that feels offended because not only did they almost get left out, but after losing to Notre Dame, everybody was like, see? They don't belong." (Bud Elliott, 17:30)
"This team very clearly has an identity... they're a team that wants to be physical. They want to run the football." (Bud Elliott, 24:08)
"Our expectations don't match our spending. And so if we want to have high expectations, we need to have some spending." (Danny Kanell, 26:48)
"He was the worst rated downfield passer in the FBS to the number one... so dance away." (Danny Kanell, 30:37)
"Despite a lot of drops, despite... ten sacks, seven scrambles, the offensive line is just a total mass unit... he's finally playing like the guy that Wisconsin thought they had." (Danny Kanell, 35:12)
"Malik Washington is balling... eight touchdowns, one pick, making good decisions... he’s going to save Mike Loxley’s job." (Danny Kanell, 37:31)
"Bill Belichick’s football team is going to generate lots of rumors about coaching searches and futures and contract buyouts..." (Chip Patterson, 57:34)
On Miami’s Rise:
"Clearly [the voters] are watching the DK top 12 very closely and probably adjusting in the process." – Bud Elliott (07:43)
On Drops Impacting Bryce Underwood:
"Those receivers suck. If he had...an average P4 receiving core, like...Nebraska’s, they win that game by 40." – Danny Kanell (25:15)
On Athletic Budgets & CFB’s New Reality:
"I don't know if when we get to 2029, this [budget increase] is as eye-popping as it is internally...sometimes in college sports I’ve learned that the message...is the most important thing because money’s not real." – Chip Patterson (29:55)
On Rutgers’ New QB:
"Athan Kaliakmanis is finally playing like the guy Wisconsin thought they had...the Greek rifle." – Danny Kanell (35:12)
On Social Media & Pressure:
"The Texas Longhorns social media manager should be fired...for bringing attention to something that I don't think was a huge deal." – Bud Elliott (52:14)
