Paul wants to talk about the Knowles. Time for that later. Okay, maybe. We'll see. We've got a lot to be able to get into on a week 13 that as we were discussing before we got going, provided us a good day of ball. Was there the. The headliner non stop the prime time gave us some thrills with some BYU Cincinnati as currently there are 40 seconds left as we're coming to you live at 11:30pm Eastern Time. But looks like the Cougars will hold on and continue on a pathway to. To where BYU and Texas Tech will likely be the matchup for the Big 12 title game, though not guaranteed. Lots more to get into, maybe tiebreakers. Maybe that'll come on Monday. But I do want to start. Speaking of skoducks. With Oregon 42, USC 27, it was not just one of the biggest games of the day, but one of the biggest games of the Big Ten Conference schedule all year long. And while it is a double digit Oregon win, while the final score is, you know, a cover on the spread, boys, it was a ride. This, this game was quite an adventure. You know, it was an Oregon Trail of a game. We lost players to dysentery. Our wagon wheel broke down. We had to. Tom, you know what happens when you have all the safeties falling apart. You've got to reach into your wagon and pull out a Kenyan Sadiq because a defense without safeties is. It has a real problem with a Kenyan Sadiq coming over the middle. Ducks 42, USC 27. Tom, why are you shaking your head at me?
Tom Fornelli
Just. That was unbelievable. That's a great, great Oregon Trail kind of thing there.
Chip Patterson
I hadn't even thought about it. I just thought it was an adventure of a game.
Tom Fornelli
Pulled that off the dome.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I don't.
Tom Fornelli
I don't know.
Chip Patterson
You thought. You think I walk into this planned. All that's written on the dock is Oregon outlasts usc. USC had a lot of shots to get back in this.
Bud Elliott
They did.
Chip Patterson
Why couldn't they?
Bud Elliott
Honestly, I. Guys, if Oregon gets like the four or five million dollars worth of payroll that they got in the injury tent right now and they get those dudes healthy for the playoff, that Ducks team is really high up on the list. I don't want to play. Like, think about it. You're down to tackles, what, four and five in this game because world barely played park goes down with a leg injury. Their swing tackle was already out for the game. You lose the center to a leg whip pretty early on in. In the ball game, you're down at least through top three, maybe your top four or five actual receivers. And you're still bullying USC at the point of attack. Right? Like you're, you're. My even is going to get his. Makai Lemon is going to get his. But you baited him into a couple bad picks. Right. Like you played your game for the most part. Dante Moore, he was coming off the 90 completions game he had against Minnesota, he kind of just picked up where he left off. I thought he looked really damn good today. Like made throws, doesn't seem to get too rattled. Like that's a good football team. I know that they have not played a crazy like, like depth of schedule, but man, they kill the bad teams and they're, they're pretty competitive against most of the decent ones. And if they get, if they get like fully right, that's a team that can come out of nowhere with the whole damn thing. I, I really think so. Like, they're. That run game is nasty. Will Stein, I didn't know, like, I was not familiar with your game from a run calling standpoint up until like the Iowa. Right. Like to borrow the shack. Like, like, like. And then they had to. I'm like, that's a lot of creative run game stuff they're pulling out here. And it's not like Dante is some massive, you know, run threat. It. They run a lot of different concepts. They get a lot of stuff wrapped in practice. My guess, that's a pretty efficient operation on the outside of the ball. I'm talking too much a little bit here, but like, I was pretty thoroughly impressed by them. I thought they looked really sharp.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, you mentioned the offensive line injury. So it's like when you look at their overall numbers in the run game, they averaged 4.4 yards per carry. So it's not overly impressive when you look at it that way, but it's the fact that like you said, they were down like to their four and five tackles. And as a team, they still only allowed two tackles for loss in the entire game. Like they were winning the line of scrimmage against USC's defense all season. And then the fact that the Trojans, you know, they didn't have Ramsey, they didn't have their other safety, they were down to backups at both spots. Like I thought going into this game, Oregon was going to lean on its run game simply because USC's run defense had been pretty bad all season long. Oregon looked across the field and said, oh man, we're going to be able to pick these safeties apart. And that's exactly, exactly what they did. Like they threw the ball all over this team for the most part. On the other side though, USC was able to get a lot of the explosives in the passing game themselves that we hadn't really seen Oregon giving up. And we saw working called for like a thousand pass interferences this week and they were called for like five of Them last week against Minnesota, like they're getting grabby down the field in man on man situations. And it was very clear. USC's game plan was, hey, Jaden, if you see man coverage on the outside, just chuck it up. Now when it draws a pass interference or Jacoby Lane Moss is a guy, that's great. It's just that also gets you into situations where Maeva just doesn't really care that the guy's covered and the throw is not there. So he makes it anyway because he's been coached. You see, man on man, we're going after it. So he threw, you know, like a couple interceptions just throwing balls he should not have thrown. So I, I think that kills you. You can't turn the ball over twice like that against a team like this on the road and expect to win. But overall, just. Oregon won the line of scrimmage. They, they kept USC from putting them in bad spots and they didn't let USC run the ball worth a damn. And it was, yeah, it was, it, it wasn't a blowout. But I also never really felt like USC was going to have a chance to win the game either.
Bud Elliott
The, the only time I did really is we were starting to have a little bit of that like, and Tom, you hit on this a little bit. The, like the Oregon pass defense, when they face these good teams like you know, twice against Deborah, if we can go back, you know, two seasons ago this year against Indiana, it feels like they do give up the killer completion too often. I don't know if that's like a scheme thing or maybe they just, maybe they're just not as good as some of the other units on this team. But I'm like, ah, I don't know if that secondary is like that good. I would have liked to see a little more pass pressure on Jaden. Give. Like Elijah Page is a stud. Obviously he was out for usc. USC center goes down too, right?
Chip Patterson
I mean the, the bodies were falling. Oh, it's just between the injuries and the penalties, I was going to say.
Tom Fornelli
What were there more of injuries or penalties?
Chip Patterson
It was a disjointed game. You know, like there was a lot of things that were just. You were having to duct tape this together and figure it out. Explosive plays being called back, you know, the, the penalty that leads you one way, but then the other team does a personal foul that bumps you right back to where you were to begin with. Just a clunky, clunky operation across the board.
Bud Elliott
A lot of the throws that Jaden got Like got away with against Iowa were also made today and some were completed and then two were picked. It wasn't like Oregon was blowing coverage. It just feels like guys get open against them. Not wide ass open, just like open enough to where a good quarterback, like a playoff quarterback can complete it. But I like Dante's playing really well, I think. And if he gets those weapons back because Sadiq. I thought Gary Danielson the broadcast, I. I was thinking about like, who's the player Comp. He nailed it, man. Kellen Winslow Jr. For those of you all who are a little bit younger than us and didn't see him play when he was at Miami, you know, like Soldier.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Like he was really, really good built, you know, kind of a similarly there. I, I think that's a scary team if they get going and get healthy.
Chip Patterson
We need to make a board of the teams you don't want to see in the playoff and we'll just keep adding to it. And then on selection day, it's 12 teams that you don't want to see in the playoffs.
Tom Fornelli
You know, a team you don't want to see in the playoff right now. Wisconsin. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
I mean, come on, you gotta watch out. I do wonder. So Jaden Maeva, home road splits. We talked about him. The road is where the turnovers come. That this is again where it happened. He was a little bit, you know, it is the, the fault of the USC offense as a whole, but the fact that they were chasing the game and the fact that he couldn't run the ball kind of necessitated that you just got to take those chances. Sure, you were all afternoon. You just, you had to let it rip. That was going to be the only way he had been empowered clearly to go out there and take those chances. So, you know, I, I still think that it fell in line a little bit with our expectations there. USC's offensive success early, you know, I think was a little bit of, whoa, okay, here we go. But still, I think a lot of credit goes to this Oregon team. Are you concerned, Bud? I'll throw this back at you. They do have to play Washington and they are still super banged up in this moment.
Bud Elliott
Of course, like 2025 football is a. Unless your name is Ohio State and maybe even not. But like, unless you're in Ohio State, everything is very compressed. Like, we know the top teams in the sport are about a touchdown worse than they were a half decade ago. So, yes, definitely. Like, I don't know what the score of the Washington game is right now. I don't have it on but Rio I think like I I took their team total under on CSHQ today when we saw the injury report pop. Like two offensive linemen, a couple pass catchers. That's gonna be hard to score a lot of points even though UCLA's defense is not great. So they're both dealing with injuries. I think the Oregon run game is super encouraging though. Like those guys run hard. They seem to get really good movement at the point of attack. I would guess they're going to get world and hockey back. Not maybe not for this coming week but like playoff. I don't know about the leg whip on the center. I don't know what the severity is of that but I mean you get a month for the playoff basically. So I would hope to get everybody back. It seems like Decorian should be back by the playoff. I know Evan Stewart they're kind of hopeful on so you might get a full strength organ.
Chip Patterson
The other thing too is you talked about the the secondary.
Bud Elliott
Did hockey come back in?
Chip Patterson
Yeah, Harky was not but like Brandon Finney's a freshman. There's other young guys in that secondary. You know I think Oregon secondary will only get better with experience and that could be continued experience in terms of a deep playoff run or that could be hey next year watch out. They could have one of the top secondaries in the Big Ten. But right now it is impossible to ignore that they've got that situation of super high talent but very low experience at a place that will be tested against some of the best teams in the country. Hasn't been tested a lot by Oregon schedule but Mai Lemon, Jacobe Lane, these are the toughest assignments that you're going to get in all of college football.
Bud Elliott
The teams that you think are definitively better at receiver than USC is. I got one.
Chip Patterson
Ohio State is obviously the Anybody else.
Bud Elliott
You'Re real sure that you would take over at USC group Alabama.
Chip Patterson
No, I would put USC ahead of them.
Bud Elliott
It's in the conversation.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Ohio State snap call.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
I mean there's a lot of teams you could face in the playoff who don't have receivers who scare you at all.
Chip Patterson
Isn't it great?
Bud Elliott
I mean seriously like you draw Texas Tech not scared of that?
Chip Patterson
No.
Bud Elliott
You know like Georgia Tech or Virginia or Pitt or.
Chip Patterson
No, I'm sorry Georgia Tech. Yeah, we'll get to them but right yours doors be slamming. You know I would. I might actually do some sound effects around here but no that's those. Those doors are shutting real fast for the Bees. But I agree with you. I understand your point. Anything else from Eugene you want to be sure we highlight here?
Bud Elliott
I'm, like, not out on usc. They were. They were in this game up until the putt return.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, but they're out.
Bud Elliott
I think they're moving in the right direction. No, they're out.
Chip Patterson
Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And thank you for saying that, by the way. I don't want to just, like, kick the can on everybody who's, like. I want to still ask the questions that are important because guess what? In, like, three weeks, no one's gonna care. So, yeah, like, let's at least have these conversations as the. The seasons are sort of coming to an end. Let's take stock of where these teams are, what our expectations were. I agree with you, though, but generally, I mean, don't. Don't eff it up against ucla, but.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, right. I. I think they are a good.
Chip Patterson
Season with this team.
Bud Elliott
I think they're moving in the right direction. They're very likely to finish with the number one overall recruiting class. I think they're, like, a tougher football team. They used to be, like, physically. I know they got pushed around a little bit by Oregon, but, I mean, so did Iowa. Right. And nobody thinks I was soft. So I. I kind of think I'm, like, in on Lincoln Riley's USC now in a way that I don't think I was two years ago.
Chip Patterson
So it's a good sign. Tom, any other final thoughts on Oregon usa?
Tom Fornelli
My fear for next week, aside from the injuries, is for Oregon's sake, is I do like Dante Moore played well, but I still would. There's something about him I just don't trust yet. So going on the road to play Washington, I do worry, like, I feel like they're going to want to hand the ball off a lot in that game.
Chip Patterson
I. I always enjoy what the. What. What the broadcast gets from some of these conversations with the coaches. Sometimes it's what you hear from the coaches about their own team. Sometimes it's what you hear from the coaches about the other team while they did not reveal their sources. Oh, it was a little damning when. When Gary was talking about how Dante Moore doesn't like to get hit. Oh, that's not a quote. We like floating around on the scouting report. Oh, yeah, yeah. They told us he runs, but he's not a threat to actually run. He just wants to extend the play. And then you saw those USC defenders just, you know, through the whistle, let's put some hands on him. Let's Push him to the ground a little bit. Not. I'm not going to say it one way or the other. Just not the best thing to be floating around on the scouting report right now. Quote, doesn't like to get hit, but, you know, something to keep your eye on moving ahead with the Ducks.
Tom Fornelli
Who's the QB that does like to get hit, though? Like Jaden Daniels.
Chip Patterson
John here, we're seeing this eye to eye.
Tom Fornelli
Who else?
Chip Patterson
Real quick snap call. Who else on the quarterback? Haynes, King.
Tom Fornelli
I think Josh Allen likes Josh Allen. Yeah, yeah.
Bud Elliott
Also, like, we don't know they came from usc. Gunner, Stockton, like, they also had cbs also had the Indiana game against them.
Chip Patterson
Oh, yeah. Or hey, listen, we're all in on the Ducks. Let's go.
Tom Fornelli
Is that CBS team of the season.
Bud Elliott
Mikey says Jackson.
Tom Fornelli
Jackson Dart definitely loves to get hit and his coach was willing to let him do it to save his job as many times as he needed to. Baker, Riley Leonard.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, that's good.
Tom Fornelli
Riley Leonard. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Yep, that's another good one. Speaking of John Matier, Oklahoma keeps doing this amazing thing. Amazing. I mean, just like one of a kind correlation of win, loss, success and total offensive output. I mean, what was. What was your favorite first down, bud?
Bud Elliott
I mean, dude, like, Dan and I were talking in commercial breaks and like, it was me and BMAC and Damien and Danny on HQ set and they're like, do you think you're gonna let him throw any more passes today? Like, they clearly already told him, like, dial it back now, like in the final, what, however many minutes there was like, ah, we're just never gonna risk you throwing the football here.
Tom Fornelli
It's.
Bud Elliott
But look like this is probably the way they have to win based on what they have. So credit to Oklahoma for like playing their game and getting everybody else to play their game too, right? Yeah. Now maybe you could tell me. Missouri was not equipped to play any other style of games. They had to play an Oklahoma style of game. Oklahoma just played that style of game better, which I'll buy. Is it sustainable what they're doing? I don't personally think so, but again, like against Missouri and lsu, possibly. Like, I ran the playoff stuff, guys. I got him in, so welcome back. That defense is freaking nasty. Yeah, I. Did you think that Missouri should have. Should have pulled boys?
Tom Fornelli
I mean, I certainly didn't think Bo was playing well.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Because after like the first two drives, I. I'll look this up on stats bomb. Maybe we'll use some stats bomb graphics on Monday. I would like, like to be able to visualize how much closer to line scrimmage. Oklahoma creeped after those first two drives when, when Missouri was moving on the ground some because I think they're like, all right, like we're just not allowing any of this run game stuff anymore. Like you guys are gonna have to throw to beat us. And he just really couldn't do it. I don't think that's really ankle by the way. Like, he just, he's never been a great thrower of the ball, even at Penn State. You know, I mean credit to like they, they had like zero tackles for lost I think in the first few drives. And after that it was just an onslaught like started creating negative plays. Like when Oklahoma can do, they hit the one explosive, which was fantastic. You know, they also had 276 yards.
Chip Patterson
At home against Missouri, 87 of them on one plate. The one explosive you just mentioned was 87. The percentage of the total offense.
Tom Fornelli
I mean, that was a great play by the way.
Chip Patterson
It was a fantastic play.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
And it was delivered right on Stratton. He took it to the house and we're like, okay, well that's all the offense we needed for today, boys. Defense and special teams gonna handle the rest.
Bud Elliott
It was literally right after he was so behind on a pass, like to a wide ass open guy on, you know what, first down or second down. I was like, oh God, we doing this again. And then he hits him in stride. It was beauty. I think Arbuckle for them is a stud OC by the way. Like the numbers don't show it, but like he, I think he schemes up a lot of open stuff that does not get hit. But they're also playing three freshman offensive linemen.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I was gonna say there's also what can they work with offensive line. And like Damon Wilson was eating in this game. I mean Missouri's defensive front was like, oh, it's pretty good.
Tom Fornelli
We're gonna.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, yeah, I, I 100 agree.
Bud Elliott
And I thought, I don't know, did he tackle names? I forget who it was like those guys were getting home some. It was, it was pretty impressive.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, it was not the prettiest game to watch. I mean, Mattier finished 14 of 31 73. And you mentioned he had 87 on the one throw. Like it's, it is very important for them what seed they get. Like they, they need a home game in the first round because I, I know they've had success on the road. I know they've beaten Alabama. I know they've beaten Tennessee. But like if they're at home. I feel like they've got a shot to win. But if they go on the road and they run into somebody like Notre Dame, I just don't know what shot they have.
Bud Elliott
We debated this, right? Like who would you take in a playoff game? I said I. Even though I think that they could ugly it up. I do trust Notre Dame to make ohu's offense look bad because everybody does. And I do trust Carr and like those skill guys to score in like the mid to high 20s against ou. Because ole miss put up what Ole Miss put up, like high 30s.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, it wasn't Ole Miss 34, 27 or 20. Hold on, let me see.
Bud Elliott
Like they moved it because like they did. They didn't have 310 yards. They had like 400 something ole missiles 34, 26. And he probably had what, 440 or something yardage wise, like they moved it on. I think a, like some of the offenses you'll see in the playoff can score in the 30s on this offense and I don't know that. Oh, you can score in the 30s against a playoff caliber team. He did it on Tennessee, but that was partially like turnover rated, which is part of the recipe.
Chip Patterson
Yep.
Bud Elliott
But also Tennessee's not a playoff team. Like they, they dump truck Florida tonight before it is pretty clearly quit.
Tom Fornelli
I did not say winning in the Swamp still counts.
Bud Elliott
Well, I mean if you're. Tennessee ain't giving a win.
Tom Fornelli
That's what I'm saying. For a Tennessee fan, they do not care the circumstances. They finally got a win in the Swamp.
Bud Elliott
But like are you changing your opinion materially on Tennessee tonight? No, no, that Florida just Florida no showed at home, which is kind of embarrassing.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. I mean once it was. Once it was like a three score deficit and a goose egg on the board. I kind of relegated it to back burner. I do not have a robust set of notes here on my notepad from Tennessee Florida because it didn't seem like the type of. The type of game that was going to give me stuff that was going to help me moving forward. So I agree with you for sure. What about the team that Tennessee's playing next week? Vanderbilt Commodores. Clark Lee called it a statement win win that they need. I think they wanted to win like that. Now there's gonna be the, the big picture here. Diego Pavia setting a school record 464. 408. No, 482.
Tom Fornelli
Hold on. Begging Clark to leave him in the game.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
And Clark listened.
Bud Elliott
Is he your Heisman Front runner next year if he wins his lawsuit.
Tom Fornelli
He's not coming back.
Bud Elliott
Where's he going?
Tom Fornelli
Not coming back?
Bud Elliott
Is he going to Netflix? He's not going to the NFL.
Tom Fornelli
Maybe he's just done with football, but he said he's not coming back.
Chip Patterson
All right.
Tom Fornelli
485 star.
Chip Patterson
And it's not just 484 yards. It's 484 yards on 33 of 39 passing. Five touchdowns added another score on the ground, six touchdowns for Diego Pavia.
Tom Fornelli
A decent day.
Chip Patterson
I think that. I think there was some intention in the way that they were handling their business and that a game against Kentucky represents continuing to draw that line in the sand that we ain't going back. You know, hi, we're Vanderbilt. We have climbed out of a certain tier in the SEC and we ain't going back. And we're going to show you on the field the that there is a difference between where you are and where we are. Because where we are is not where we were. Because where we were was when Vanderbilt was. When Barton was coming on the podcast after beating Kentucky. Beating Kentucky was a thing a couple years ago and now it's like, no, not only is it not a thing, but we are going to make absolute mincemeat out of you. I thought it when, when Clark says it's a, it was a statement win for us. I, I agree with him on that one. I think the fact that they were able to just totally work. I mean this thing was 45 to three.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. After three quarters.
Chip Patterson
After three quarters.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. He got a couple touchdowns in the fourth to make it look kind of closer than it was.
Bud Elliott
And like, look, I obviously like Vandy's playoff chances are real slim. They needed style points in the worst way because Missouri look like crap. They're probably a 7 and 5 team. Okay, that's your. To this point that was your best win. Or is it LSU which is also likely a 7 to 5 team?
Chip Patterson
No, I mean it comes down to Tennessee and what happens around you.
Bud Elliott
If they kill Tennessee, I think they have a shot.
Chip Patterson
I. Vanderbilt's got a chance to for the first ever 10 win season. I, I think that it's more of a set this in front of you, kick Kentucky's ass, beat Tennessee, win 10 games and let the chips fall where they may. Like there are too many. The, the parlay has too many legs to be able to really open the door. I think for Vanderbilt to get there and that's where the energy obviously for the team, coaches, everyone involved, it's Always going to be. Not always, but you'd hope it's going to be, you know, right there on the opponent. But for a fan interest, even rooting, I think that the challenge that Tennessee possesses still and also sort of like where you are. Yeah. Just go beat Tennessee and figure, figure out what happens after that.
Bud Elliott
I'm saying like the margin by which you killed Kentucky, the fact that like you, you were talking about them in one of the first four or five games we talk about tonight, that keeps the parlay alive. You know, like, like, hey, we had a little, little, you know, kind of not struggle mid season but just like a little bit of a lull at times. Bama's a good team. There's no real shame in losing them when you have some red zone turnovers. Okay. You kill Kentucky. I don't think you're going to kill Tennessee. But if they did and other stuff happens around, maybe, maybe like Tennessee has no good wins. Right. So no, it's not, it's not impossible. They lay an egg. And Vandy plays an awesome game thematically.
Tom Fornelli
This morning with that stat.
Chip Patterson
Oh, was it Missouri?
Tom Fornelli
The three ranked teams in the CFP Top 25 who are yet to beat a Power 4 team with a winning record.
Chip Patterson
Tennessee, Missouri And Tulanerall says two lanes, just a top 75 team.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I know some are all even tips in his own team.
Chip Patterson
All right, fine. We're not bottom 25. We're barely top 75. Hey, you know what? That, that team Cook, that team could have won, put 50 on the board today. Their own red zone issues kept them from being able to score more points. So I understand why he's, why, why he's saying that. Oh, here's, here's a good one. Yeah. Also the Vanderbilt thing did to kind of connect thematically to. To Oklahoma. So let's, let's see if this drives the people crazy. Tom Fornelli, what were you more impressed by? Arch Manning Six, six touchdowns or Diego Pavia's six touchdowns?
Tom Fornelli
Diego's. I feel like anybody can wake up and score six touchdowns against Arkansas. Not anybody can do that against Kentucky.
Chip Patterson
That's a good point. I mean Arch Manning definitely didn't do that against Kentucky. No, Arch Manning, Bud Elliott, whose six touchdown performance is more impressive? Diego Pavia's or Arch Mannings?
Bud Elliott
I mean, I don't know. There's really good choices there. Diego Pavi and archbanning are both serious impact players. Right. There's a lot of intrigue around and we have to keep watching. You got to know how to watch die Javier and Arch Manning.
Chip Patterson
Hey all right. The answer is Archbanning. He caught one. All right.
Tom Fornelli
First SEC QB to run, throw and catch one in a game since Dak Prescott in 2014.
Bud Elliott
That's good trivia.
Tom Fornelli
Last first one to do it. First one to do it in an SEC game since 2012. Anyone want to guess who the QB was 2012?
Chip Patterson
I know Johnny.
Tom Fornelli
It was Dr. Bo Bo Wallace.
Chip Patterson
I don't. I I don't have any bit once once this thing got sideways on yeah I stopped watching. I stopped watching.
Tom Fornelli
Yep.
Bud Elliott
Yeah I I was like hey that's some creative run stuff from Arkansas early on to to pop some explosives Text suggested one thing. It does not adjust that Arkansas their defensive talent is not there. So it did not show up this week just like it has not shown up in any week this season. And yeah, that was what I missed.
Tom Fornelli
Was did Taylor Green get hurt or benched again?
Bud Elliott
I stopped watching once I saw Texas drive the ball easily on the non stop.
Chip Patterson
So I don't know but that was the beginning. So you stopped watching it like what the pretty early minute mark I had I had. So this thing flipped for me in terms of sort of like where I was looking at it as how I was trying to break it down when when Arkansas gave up the free possessions because it was like that that was you had to hold serve and when you gave a couple short fields, a couple bang bang touchdowns to create that cushion, then Arkansas was just able to push it from there. I thought that when it was a little bit of tit for tat and they were kind of trading pain out there, I was like hey, maybe the Hogs are going to be able to keep hang in this make it interesting. But Tom, as we said on CBS Sports HQ at halftime of the 3:30 games, I did not expect that Arkansas was going to win. I expected Arkansas was going to lose by a slightly closer margin just like they do in all these other SEC games where they score a whole bunch of points and then lose by a close margin. So I'm not handing flowers to the Texas Longhorns. I see it as Arkansas. Arkansas messed up in a way that they could not mess up if they were going to hang in this game.
Tom Fornelli
But but what truly matters is Arkansas scored with 16 seconds left so they lost by 15. They are now 2 and 9 with a point differential of plus 3. So they still have a positive point differential. As long as they lose to Missouri by two points or fewer or even win the game outright, they're going to finish with a positive point differential with a horrible record. And that's what matters if you're Arkansas. That's what you're waking up tomorrow. That's what you're fighting for every single day. The point differential.
Chip Patterson
That's what Jon Gruden's getting ready to, you know, really lock in for the Hogs.
Tom Fornelli
How about this point differential, guys, huh? Man, come on, guys.
Chip Patterson
It's about win small, then win big. We've been losing big. Gonna lose small.
Tom Fornelli
Tell you what I love about football, man. Point differentials.
Chip Patterson
Was that a blocked. What happened? What happened in Washington?
Tom Fornelli
You scoop and score.
Bud Elliott
What channel is this on?
Tom Fornelli
NBC or Peacock?
Bud Elliott
Oh, you know, my Peacock rules.
Chip Patterson
No, no. SNL Tonight, just the pure comedy of the University of California, Los Angeles football program.
Tom Fornelli
The Californians.
Bud Elliott
Oh, no, no. So they tried to fake the field goal where they throw it over their heads, and the. The kicker didn't catch it, and then Washington returned it for touchdown. This needs some yakety sacks.
Tom Fornelli
For sure.
Chip Patterson
This is as funny as Saturday Night Live.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, this is. This is hilarious. Unless you have a little, you know, Washington team total under, and then this is not actually all that funny, but.
Tom Fornelli
Oh, man.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, the LSU fake gone wrong. Great call, Jacob in the tailgate on that one. All right, coming up on the other side, Utah. An insane game against Kansas State. But they do emerge. Some look back at byu, Cincinnati, the Pit, Georgia Tech, roller coaster, and so much more.
Tom Fornelli

Back here on the COVID 3 podcast, the Utah Utes are amazingly still in the same position that they were big picture mathematically earlier in the day they didn't look like it was going to be like that. No, no, no. The Utah Utes overcame multiple double digit deficits at home in Rice Echo Stadium to a Kansas State team that at times this year has looked deader than dead. But they had no issue going right through Morgan Scally's defense. And what I think I'm gonna need a true RE watch to figure out is that whether it was schematic or whether it was performance. Because Utah from the very beginning of this game had no defensive answers for Kansas State. They just happened to get what they needed from Devin Dampier, from Bird Ficklin, from this offense to be able to come back in this game. They got, got a couple turnovers, got some red zone stops, and they found a way to win 51 to 47. It was not an inspiring performance. Do you have any answers here? Was this, Was it schematic? Was it performance? How did Kansas State roll into Salt Lake City? What we have said often as one of the toughest environments to play in and made Utah look not just ordinary, but just straight up bad on defense.
Bud Elliott
Can you guys still hear me?
Tom Fornelli
Yes. All right.
Bud Elliott
Because I can't see you because I'm on a different tab and the tab is frozen. The number of times that Joe Jackson like cleared the line of scrimmage without having to break stride, like at all, for just explosive runs. It felt like you were watching a replay for Utah. It was like a nightmare replay over and over again. So like, obviously Kansas State played hard. I think Utah was very much respecting Avery Johnson's legs and the threat of that. And Kansas State probably played on that. But holy cow, like, dude, he just hit that thing in stride, like over and over again. That was remarkable.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, like, statistically, it's not as if Utah had been an incredibly good rush defense all season long. Like, I think EPA per rush. They're in the 90s still. I mean, this was. Yeah, this was a college football game in which sometimes this stuff just happens. And Shoeless Joe Jackson was just absolutely running rampant. 293 yards, three touchdowns, 24 carries. And it didn't matter because Kansas State's defense gave it all right back. Yeah, like, Kansas State averaged 8.8 yards per play, had 574 yards of offense, scored 47 points, didn't. And lost because they couldn't stop Utah. I mean, it was a third. It was 31, 21 at halftime. Utah scored him 30 to 16 in the second half, including the comeback with like the long Devin Dampier run to get him down to the goal line to get the game winning touchdown. It was, it was a really wild and fun football game. Probably not as fun if you're a Kansas State fan and you blew it because you thought you had a really good shot. But I'll tell you who didn't enjoy it.
Chip Patterson
Chris Climan.
Tom Fornelli
Chris Climan. Did you see the quote afterward?
Chip Patterson
I saw the. Yes, I did.
Tom Fornelli
I'll read it. Chris climbing near his press conference after the game. And this is all quote I've heard. I've cashed it in. The players have cashed it in. We need to get new leadership here, new players, new coaches. I gotta be honest with you, I'm tired of it. I've given my friggin ass life for this place for seven years. I've given everything for seven years and I think I deserve a little bit of respect. So it's been a long season for Kansas State. I mean right from the jump, the way that they lost Ireland.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
Everything that happened with like Avery Johnson's family afterwards. It has just been a long, long year for the Wildcats. And I think that Chris Klein will be happy that it's over soon.
Bud Elliott
That was just like a wild game. Like watching it was just incredible. I mean like Utah, Utah is a really good team.
Chip Patterson
I'm not.
Bud Elliott
And this came out of nowhere.
Chip Patterson
No, you don't think Utah's good? I'm not going to say really good.
Tom Fornelli
Power ratings would disagree with you.
Chip Patterson
That's fine, Chip.
Bud Elliott
They buzz saw like almost everybody they play.
Chip Patterson
If it's not wide open, I don't know if at the skill position receivers and at quarterback they can really step back. I think that the passing attack lacks when it comes to. If it ain't schemed open one on one catches, one on one throws. When that offense was really spinning its wheels at the beginning of this game, I was like, man, it's. There is a little bit of an absence of something special when everything's not on schedule and running the running game's not rolling. And I just. Yeah, but that's fine. I just think Utah's probably a little bit closer to the lot of teams.
Tom Fornelli
There are teams I could say that about.
Bud Elliott
I mean if we don't want to think like I think FPI had him like six, which or said like that that might be a little high. But like I mean they beat Cincinnati. Yeah, they smoked Cincinnati by 31. Like they beat Arizona State by 32. Like they, they've gone out and killed like almost everybody they've played.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, except when they played the good teams and they looked regular. So we looked regular against Kansas State. I mean again, they looked regular against Texas State Tech. They looked regular against byu.
Tom Fornelli
But they nearly beat byu.
Chip Patterson
But they didn't.
Tom Fornelli
Timothy Frederick in the chat. How are you guys not going to mention the officiating in the Kansas State Utah game. Atrocious in one way. Timothy, I'm going to assume based on your comment that you're a Kansas State fan. I want to strike a deal with you. If your team gives up 51 points, you're not allowed to complain about the officiating for why you lost.
Bud Elliott
What was the specific complaint on the officiating? Like, I get, I, I get the, the. The missed call in, in Iowa, Michigan.
Chip Patterson
State.
Bud Elliott
Because the ref is ducking. So he doesn't get hit by the ball. He doesn't see the like the Iowa db, just tackle the receiver. But like.
Tom Fornelli
Just saying, you give him 550 yards of offense and 51 points, you can't be like, the ref screwed us.
Bud Elliott
UCLA just had another turnover in their. In their own end. This has gone from like 13, nothing like somewhat respectable low scoring get out of Dodge, win for Washington to. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Anything else from Salt Lake City? I want to also ask obviously about Nippert Stadium. Byu. Are you. Are you more inspired by byu? Any, Any thoughts there on the Cougs?
Bud Elliott
I think they just keep improving, honestly. Like, like Bachmire got. Got pretty dinged. So did L.J.
Tom Fornelli
Martin.
Bud Elliott
And like, they, they found a way to win. Like, Cincinnati's a pretty good team. Like, to go on the road and get that win is not easy like that. All credit. I think they just keep getting better now. I don't know if they're gonna be good enough to actually give Texas Tech a game, but like, I think they keep improving week to week.
Chip Patterson
Sorsby continues to have that issue, though, that all the turnovers that weren't there early.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. They're suddenly catching up now.
Chip Patterson
They're suddenly catching up. And it's a inopportune time, my friend, for, for all those turnovers to be piling up.
Tom Fornelli
It's also an inoperative. I mean, it. I don't know if it makes a difference. They lost by 12. They missed three field goals in the game. Like, and they get to the red zone. So because of like missed field goals and whatnot, they finished with seven points on three red zone possessions. I know they also had the turnover on downs at like the three yard line.
Chip Patterson
I know you were very frustrated and particularly frustrated about that, Tom.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I was.
Chip Patterson
I really hope then that you didn't see the fact that, that in the last 21 games, he was 22 of 23 on kicks.
Tom Fornelli
I did see that fact, actually. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Amazing. Oh, of three. He goes for 21 games. The guy goes 22 of 23 steps up in this one. And the misses were bad too. Knucklers that were hooking into the swirling wind. Oh man, I've seen tee shots like that. They just die. The only reason they were in the air is because it was an elevated tee box. You're down there on the left side of the fairway near the creek. Good luck out there. Yes. BYU pretty banged up too. You mentioned that Bear Bachmeyer was favoring that shoulder. L.J. martin was limping around a little bit. L.J. martin still had. We had some huge rushing days today. We did guys putting up bananas numbers. L.J. martin finishes with 222. And it was a workmanlike. We don't have any 50 yard runs in there. 33 is the long, so 222 yards on 32 carries, 6.9 per attempt. Bear Bachmeyer throws for just 127. I mean, shocker. They were leaning on the ground game, but hard fought win for byu. We're continuing again, as I mentioned earlier, byu, Texas Tech, that seems to be where we're headed for the Big 12 title outlook. And I don't know is that is definitely winner win. The only way BYU can get in is by winning the Big 12. Or do you think BYU has a lose the Big 12 title game path?
Tom Fornelli
If they lose the title game, I don't think they're in.
Bud Elliott
11 and 2. I think they're like, like very likely. I don't think it's zero.
Chip Patterson
I don't think it's zero. But I think it'd be easy if, if you're faced with a tough decision, BYU with the. I mean Cincinnati might be one of the best wins.
Bud Elliott
If, if Utah had lost, I would have put about zero.
Chip Patterson
Because then you can't. At least right now you can count the Utah win. Yeah, Utah's the best win. Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
Speaking of Utah, Chip.
Chip Patterson
What?
Tom Fornelli
Speaking of Utah, because you were saying that they suck. A couple minutes ago I received a text. The person wants to know if Utah sucks, then why did you lock them up at minus 17 and a half?
Chip Patterson
I just said that I, I said that I came out of it noting that they're a little regular.
Tom Fornelli
Just saying they didn't seem regular on Thursday.
Chip Patterson
I thought, hey, listen, a big part of that, as stated was a fate of Kansas State that we were trusting the Kansas State team that had just won 14 to 6 against Oklahoma State. You see, UCF almost messed around and did it too.
Bud Elliott
I know.
Tom Fornelli
I thought they were going to. And I was. I nearly put Oklahoma State as one of my sprinkles this week too. And I was going to be so mad.
Chip Patterson
Oklahoma State just keeps daring, daring these teams into horrific losses. Yeah, so it takes two to tango. I'll, I'll take. I, I understand what I did. If, if anything, it just meant I had a sharper eye on the competition, that's all. We're trying to get better out here, even at the end of the season.
Tom Fornelli
All right.
Chip Patterson
Coming up on the other side, Georgia Tech continues to spiral. Miami pouring it on. Throw it on fourth down late in the game. Okay. Mario says aggressive Duke absolutely put a dagger in Bill Belichick with a great rivalry fake and more nukes. It's NBA tip off week and FanDuel is your home for live betting. It's the home stretch of the college football season. We're headed out of town. Rivalry weekend. Ooh, college football playoff games. The whole experience. While I'm off soaking in the excitement, I realized my my home could actually be doing something for me while I'm away. That's right, you can host your home on Airbnb while you're gone. Seriously, your home might be worth more than you think. Find out how much@airbnb.com host.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I. I'll give Georgia Tech some credit for actually making a game out of it.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, it's better that. So you know what it reminded me of? And I think I mentioned this time in the slack. It reminded me of when Pitt stole Kyle McCord's soul. Yeah, I remember when Fran just left him out there to eat it, but he just never worked his way out. At least Haynes King came back. Taylor McGregor incredible in game sleep. Sideline report she said over here by Haynes King. He's just staring off. He's got no look in his eyes. He's staring off into space like, what am I even doing here?
Tom Fornelli
Sailor spends a lot of time in the bleachers at Wrigley Field in the summer, so she's seen that look a lot. She knows the meaning behind it.
Chip Patterson
I really want to say that she was like, he's staring off into space. Like, how did I get here? And I was in my room going. And the days go by and the what? You know, just like they're making this guy look lost. This played nine years in college football. They're making him seem like he is having a total breakdown right now. Yes. Credit Haynes King from escaping from the void to come back and be able to at least make this a game. Obviously at the very end, Pitt's able to literally break it open with Lil Boozy and and be able to walk this thing all the way to the pay window.
Tom Fornelli
Narduzzi did get too cute with it.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. With the fake punt.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. In a seven point game. Like, I'm just saying, like, if you're putting out like a 165 pound guy in the number three in the upback spot on the punt return, it's kind of a giveaway that we're probably snapping the ball directly to this guy. A little running back there. So, yeah, Georgia Tech figured that out pretty quickly. And it nearly. It didn't prove costly, though, because, you know, Pitt was able to. Was that drive where Haynes King through the red zone pick, right?
Chip Patterson
No, no, no. The. After the fake punt was the touchdown that cut it to 35, 28.
Tom Fornelli
Okay. And then that was all right.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. Because he threw the YOLO ball to Canyon, who leapt up and got it as his legs were getting taken out from under him. And then Canyon got the touchdown in the back of the end zone a little bit later on that same drive.
Bud Elliott
I mean, look, Pitt was not gonna let Georgia Tech run the ball. They're like, yeah, Haynes King, there's a reason you're going pro. And maybe he's gonna be like a. Who was the guy for byu, played for the Saints for a while. Maybe be like a Taysom Hill type. I doubt it in. In the NFL. But, like, we're gonna make you beat us with your arm. And like, I think every decoy in the country would take 41 for 257 if I get two picks off of two. Right? Like, that's not a very efficient game. So not. Not good enough throwing it to overcome that. I mean, 33 for 121 against Georgia Tech, which is such a running team. Narduzzi's got to be thrilled with that, obviously. And like, they game scripted them. Like, you get a 28 nothing lead here, like, that's going to put them in a very thorough position. But early on, like, they were not allowing them to run the ball. So, like, credit to pit for executing their game plan.
Chip Patterson
Mason Heinshul, we were asking about his confidence. That dude was dancing on the sideline. He was buzzing around. I mean, it was an impressive. It was an impressive bounce back for the young man who looked very lost in the sauce having his own out in the void moment during that Notre Dame game. So great if Pitt can hold on to him. And that's. And that's a. That's a bright future to build that offense around that quarterback.
Tom Fornelli
Also credit to Pat Narduzzi. We're always criticizing coaches for not being honest with us. He was honest. His team did not give a shit about the Notre Dame game. They were saving it all for this one.
Chip Patterson
I don't know, because then Desmond Reed play in the game last week and then he didn't play in the game.
Tom Fornelli
That was just to get his legs back underneath them for the game that mattered.
Chip Patterson
Pitt plays Miami Next.
Tom Fornelli
Mm. Big game.
Chip Patterson
Big game. Thoughts?
Bud Elliott
So even if Pitt beats Miami, nothing's guaranteed.
Chip Patterson
Virginia and SMU control their own destinies, correct?
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Virginia plays Virginia Tech. SMU plays a Cal team. That might be.
Tom Fornelli
Dude, but when are the games or like, is one of those on Friday or are they both on Saturday? Take a look here because that could. I mean like, if, if the. If the Pit Miami game is after the Virginia and Tech or the Virginia and the Whatch McCall games are done.
Bud Elliott
So we are looking at. So that's week 14.
Tom Fornelli
Has the ACC even announced yet?
Bud Elliott
They'll probably announce like Friday.
Chip Patterson
Everybody did a six day window for Thanksgiving week, which I, I'm. I know that we're not allowed to stick our cute little noses into any like broadcasting conversations, but that is a little tough on families who want to plan travel and like try to get to or not families or friends. Anybody fans, you know, like anybody who's trying to plan your. Your day around going to a game on rivalry weekend, on holiday weekend. The difference between 12 o' clock and seven, it's pretty big.
Tom Fornelli
They have not announced a start time for any of those games yet.
Bud Elliott
But they are all Saturday.
Tom Fornelli
They're all Saturday. And I'm betting they're all at the same time. They're gonna go like soccer style.
Chip Patterson
Soccer from your league.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. A lot of texts on the sidelines.
Chip Patterson
To know what the live table is.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. Or maybe Conor Stallion just letting you know what play they're running.
Bud Elliott
I. I will say like pit. Miami pit allowed what, six sacks to Georgia Tech tonight on like 33 drop backs. That's a little concerning. They have some offensive line problems. Like Tech got home quite a bit.
Tom Fornelli
Miami had five sacks today.
Bud Elliott
Yeah. And Miami has a hell of a lot better time to detect those. So good luck, Mason next week. Although it is high of 34 according to the chat, so.
Chip Patterson
Oh, I thought Miami was it. Miami struggling to land the plane to let Virginia Tech back in it. What do we.
Bud Elliott
They had some weird stuff. They had like the, the center snap the ball when, when Beck wasn't ready for it. Although other guys moved too. So I don't know, like who messed up the count there? That kind of killed one of their drives. They just felt like they couldn't like, put the dagger in early enough. Like they were on the verge of it a couple times. But we've seen this from Miami several times this year. Like they controlled the game against Florida and yet like, they just didn't put it away. They really killed Florida State in like the first 25 minutes of that game and yet at the end it was like, wow, what is it, a one score win or whatever. It was like, I mean, they were clear. Yeah, like they were clear to the better team, but it just. They don't seem to put guys away quite like they should.
Chip Patterson
Tom, anything else from your favorite conference stand out from the day?
Tom Fornelli
I was proud of the fight. My hokey showed in the second half.
Chip Patterson
Of that game on Sidekick.
Tom Fornelli
That's a team you don't want to see in the playoffs right now.
Chip Patterson
You're lucky we're out teams you don't want to see in the playoffs. The team that James Franklin imagines when he's talking about it on the broadcast, James Franklin is talking about Virginia Tech football. Like the friend you knew who after college did like two years in the big city. Like maybe they were in New York or Chicago or Atlanta or whatever. Big city is close to you and your university. And then they come back to town and they're just talking down to you like, like James Franklin's around the acc. Like, it reminds me of that one time in the Big Ten, you know, like when we had this, like, really, like, oh, man, this epic game. Oh, man, you should have been there. Like 100,000 people like James. What's the expectation? He's like, well, I'm still trying to figure that out. He could have said compete for championships, right? Well, I don't know, Mark. Still working on that right now. Expectations. We'll figure that out as we go.
Tom Fornelli
So, like, does that happen between Raleigh and Charlotte? What, like the big time city? Like the people come back from Raleigh after living in Charlotte and be like you, you like?
Chip Patterson
No, my experience was D.C. and New York. Charlotte's not like that. It wouldn't be Raleigh to Charlotte. It would be growing up in Raleigh or Charlotte and then your friend that, like.
Tom Fornelli
I'm just wondering if there's that kind of rivalry between the cities where people in Charlotte think they're better than the people in Raleigh.
Chip Patterson
Maybe. I would say that.
Tom Fornelli
You don't talk to him.
Chip Patterson
You.
Tom Fornelli
You wouldn't know no, Chip. Ain't got time for no show.
Chip Patterson
Ain't got time for that.
Tom Fornelli
Come on.
Chip Patterson
Same. I got 38 years in the same zip code, baby. You think I'll talk to another city?
Bud Elliott
You realize like, we are really not that far away from a six way, six two tie in the acc.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
But it does require Virginia Tech to.
Bud Elliott
Beat Virginia and Cal to beat SMU.
Chip Patterson
And Cal to beat smu.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, that's like saying that would require Stanford to beat Cal.
Bud Elliott
It also requires Syracuse to beat Boston College.
Tom Fornelli
That could happen though.
Bud Elliott
It could in theory. But like we have seen Boston College play a competent game since Halloween. We've not really seen that.
Tom Fornelli
Congratulations, by the way, Chip, on getting your first hand first half team total over before the end of the first quarter in that game.
Chip Patterson
I almost had it before they took an offensive snap.
Tom Fornelli
I know, I know. That was wild.
Bud Elliott
That was very reminiscent of. Do you remember when Pitt played UVA in like three or four years ago and they had like back to back pick six to start? Okay. It was in Charlottesville, I think.
Chip Patterson
Well, I was gonna say that was like the pit Syracuse game when I talked about when pit stole Kyle McCord's soul. Yeah, it was like four or five interceptions by halftime.
Bud Elliott
Right.
Chip Patterson
A couple of them returned for touchdowns. I think Kyle Lewis had one of those pick sixes in that game. He had another good game today.
Tom Fornelli
Zucker, by the way.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
On our. In our CBS studio, Adam Zucker for his. His running bit of every time we discusses Syracuse, where he says, he mentions how like, the team was playing well and then once Steve Angelli got hurt, you know, the season ended. And he's just. He makes sure to mention that anytime that they bring up Syracuse.
Bud Elliott
Is Steve Angeli the most valuable player in the country? In hindsight, he.
Tom Fornelli
He deserves a Heisman vote.
Bud Elliott
I mean, dude, like, what's he worth? 30 points in the spread?
Chip Patterson
But the problem is to say that would be to prop him up the way that Georgia Tech got propped up. The way that LSU got propped up. So you beat Clemson.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, true.
Chip Patterson
I mean, Duke beat Clemson. Okay, so were y' all watching the fake field goal? No, no. Ch.
Tom Fornelli
Okay, but I was watching up. I was watching an adult cheerleading competition, actually.
Chip Patterson
Dude, it was. It was kind of nasty, you know, like Darien Mensa had been a little bit up and down and like a couple penalties that helped extend the drive for Duke. Tar Heels are sitting there on that 25, 24 lead and to. To call that fake and have it just roll perfectly, it's kind of awesome. I mean, it was like, not awesome for North Carolina, but in big rivalries like that, you want to have stories and moments like that. So Blue Devils kind of, kind of knifed. Knifed the Tar Heels in that one. It hurt because you thought you were going to get the victory bell back. But small margins leave the Tar Heels on the outside of bowl eligibility. Officially. They'll finish the year in Raleigh at. At Keenan Stadium to. To see if they can Play for some pride. Try to get an in state rivalry win against an ACC opponent. Where else you want to go?
Tom Fornelli
Should we address the elephant in the room that the chats wanted me to talk about since the show started?
Chip Patterson
What is it?
Tom Fornelli
Illinois losing by 17 on the road to Wisconsin. That sucked. Not happy about it. It's worse to lose to Wisconsin by 17 than it is to lose to Indiana by 53 in my opinion. Horrible game. Not happy. But. But I will say the head official for the game, Cole Knipple, if you recognize that name, there's basketball player from Duke named Con Knipple who's now is with Charlotte, right?
Chip Patterson
He is, yeah.
Tom Fornelli
He's just. He's living Chip's life now. So like Conceple is from the state of Wisconsin just like his uncle Cole. So the Big Ten had an official from the state of Wisconsin working Wisconsin, Illinois game. So I'm filing an official protest with the Big Ten offices because I do feel like turning state's witnesses is all in vogue right now and narcing on people for no reason. So I am going to do that. I'm going to file a protest and I'm just here to say that tonight's loss does not count. Not yet. Maybe. Maybe I'll lose the appeal. But for now, Illinois wins.
Chip Patterson
Second ranked win in three weeks for the Badgers. Will the Badgers show up in the tomorrow's top 25 today? We'll talk about that later in the show before we get out.
Tom Fornelli
They probably should. They are one of the hottest teams in the country right now.
Chip Patterson
Five sacks, 209 rushing yards, more wins.
Tom Fornelli
Over ranked teams than half the CFP top 25.
Bud Elliott
They had two drives over 31 yards. 17.
Tom Fornelli
It turns, it turns out when you muff a punt, when you turn the ball over, when you have a bad snap to your punter that gets him tackled at like the 25 yard line. It's really hard to win football games.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. Speaking of muff punts and our alma maters losing.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Which was your favorite muff pun on the same drive?
Bud Elliott
It's got to be the one that ricochets 40 yards because that looks like a video game glitch, right?
Tom Fornelli
Yes.
Bud Elliott
Have you guys ever seen a, a punt ricochet that far?
Chip Patterson
There was the top. Whatever was the scenario, the snap ricocheted that far. That led us to like, what was it, third and goal from 95 yards away or something?
Bud Elliott
Oh, Louisiana Tech.
Chip Patterson
Louisiana Tech and somebody shoot.
Tom Fornelli
Who was it?
Chip Patterson
Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State?
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I think it was.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. But no, it's it was. It was up there. I mean, I. Obviously I just mentioned it with one of the more memorable, bizarre bounces that we've seen on a football field, buddy. It's not. Not great.
Bud Elliott
It's hard to out gain some like a. A team by like, you know, 60 per play and still lose by. By 10. But hey, we will find a way, guys. We will find a way. And Mike Norvell knows what it's supposed to look like, and he'll get it fixed, I'm sure.
Tom Fornelli
What's with the Matthew McConaughey thing that he does, dude?
Bud Elliott
Oh, like, it's. It's rough.
Tom Fornelli
It's.
Bud Elliott
It's not fun.
Tom Fornelli
I was very confused by that. After the second punt, they show Mike on the sideline and he's all right. That'll fix it.
Chip Patterson
Is it. Has anybody. It's not an original thought, but I just want to make sure I'm not stumbling into a label that has been slapped on them and discussed openly. But it's an AAU team. When the ball's going in the basket, it can look great.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. The ball can get sticky. Individually, I'm sure they're all very. They are not very. You know, they're all talented, they all have ability, but man, it can. That 10am Tip off and gym number three, guess what? That AAU team might not have it. You know, that AAU team might not be connected and there's not. Be all in sync.
Bud Elliott
There's a lot of celebrated going on, too, for a team that is, you know, has, what, five losses now or six losses now? Excuse me.
Tom Fornelli
Jesus Christ.
Bud Elliott
Six losses. Yeah. A lot of celebrating first downs with some theatrics. Glad you guys are still motivated.
Chip Patterson
I guess you call them FSU elite. I need to come up with a good AAU name for. For them to really carry it out the rest of the way. Because it sounds like they're gonna have another AAU team next year too, right?
Bud Elliott
Yeah. Well, I mean, they're only losing like 70 of their production, so.
Chip Patterson
Okay. And then I don't. I know we don't have. All right. Yeah. So we're just gonna have another AAU team next year, too.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, you should try, like guys from the Balkans.
Chip Patterson
That's what Brad Underwood does.
Tom Fornelli
Doesn't work against Alabama, but it works against most teams.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Who is Brad Underwood?
Chip Patterson
The Illinois men's basketball. Okay.
Tom Fornelli
All right.
Bud Elliott
Okay, cool.
Chip Patterson
Okay.
Bud Elliott
Hey, I like FSU basketball now. Like, they're. They're not good yet, but they play like a fun, interesting brand of basketball.
Tom Fornelli
Bite is fully. He's fully adapted to life in the ACC. Now.
Chip Patterson
Chip correction, basketball corrections and additions. Apparently I said Keenan Stadium when I met Carter Finley Stadium earlier. Today's game was in Keenan Stadium. Next week's game between North Carolina NC State will be in Carter Finley additions. You just mentioned something, bud. That brought it back to my head. Texas was doing a lot of tick tock dances for beating up on Arkansas. You know, I just felt, you know, like we're doing like everybody's got the spider man. I know I'm, I know I'm sounding like old man yells at Cloud, but you know, it just, it seems like a good day in dkr. I'm glad they, I'm glad they got all the celebrations out of the way. I don't know if they'll be able to do as many of them with Texas A M coming to town next week.
Bud Elliott
Probably not.
Tom Fornelli
I will say I am on team. You know, you lost last week, you won this week. Be happy.
Chip Patterson
Okay? That's fair. It's like every touchdown we had a lot of celebrations. You know, it was like LeBron on the Cavs level of I've got a different handshake with every single person on the team.
Tom Fornelli
That's a lot of work. I don't know how they like players.
Chip Patterson
Do that downtime because like you see.
Tom Fornelli
It in baseball teams too. Like everybody has like an individual handshake after a home run. How the hell are you supposed to memorize like 25 different handshakes?
Chip Patterson
How do we memorize all the stuff we do?
Bud Elliott
I can't remember half the people we.
Tom Fornelli
Works with names now.
Bud Elliott
That is true. Like there's so many people in the office and everybody's so nice and like I try to like take notes.
Tom Fornelli
Whole lot of hey, how are you? Is coming out of my mouth.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
And like I love hanging with them. Like there's like a couple of the office, like I, I asked Debo one times, like, do we have like a, like a yearbook type thing or like a directory with faces so I can just. You know what I mean? Because it's too far along in the process, you know. But if you're only down there like every, every six weeks, it. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
So.
Tom Fornelli
Hey man, what's up? Good to see you.
Chip Patterson
I know and love you all because many of them listen to the COVID 3 podcast and adore.
Bud Elliott
Like I said, they're all awesome.
Chip Patterson
So it's like, I love you all too.
Tom Fornelli
I just don't remember everybody's name. There's like a Thousand people in there.
Bud Elliott
This is probably like remote employee issues that like, is. Are not unique to us. Maybe I would think like when you go into the home office but you work remote, you know, and you don't have zoom calls. All right, couple other notes. Bama is now win and in because Vandera killed Kentucky. So even in the best possible case, Georgia cannot pass them in a tiebreaker. Georgia can still get in if A M loses or if Ole Miss loses, right?
Chip Patterson
No, there's a Georgia.
Bud Elliott
Sorry, sorry. If anything loses.
Chip Patterson
If Alabama loses, Georgia can get in.
Bud Elliott
Correct?
Chip Patterson
Yeah, yeah. Which, I mean, I don't know, looking at what Auburn did to my Mercer.
Bud Elliott
Bears, you know, so Mercer kind of laid down, right?
Chip Patterson
Absolutely.
Bud Elliott
Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. I mean, Auburn. Auburn did the. How bad do you want this? At the end of the first half, you know, Malcolm Simmons. You get Malcolm Simmons loose for like an 85 yard touchdown, banging another quick score. Really play with a lot of urgency. Just to let you know how we're feeling about the competition. Heading into the locker room then. Yeah, I think it was pretty much settled from there on out. Northwestern is bowl eligible.
Tom Fornelli
I think that was a crazy game. That was a really fun game. Like, that was one of the funnest games of the day.
Bud Elliott
Preston Stone finished 15 for 15 down the stretch.
Chip Patterson
Yep.
Tom Fornelli
All right.
Bud Elliott
I do not think Pete Car Armstrong could do that.
Chip Patterson
Great fallback.
Tom Fornelli
There we go.
Chip Patterson
All right, let's set the record straight. Pete Crow Armstrong, not as good of a quarterback for the Northwestern Wildcats even in Wrigley Field as Preston Stone.
Bud Elliott
Can Georgia lose the four? Georgia can absolutely lose the four seed.
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
If Bama wins the SC title, Georgia will not remain ahead of them.
Tom Fornelli
Like to. Are you guys okay if I make a statement on behalf of the entire show?
Bud Elliott
Yes.
Tom Fornelli
A couple people in the. You're not. Okay, well, then I won't. I won't.
Chip Patterson
I want you to make a statement. I don't want it to necessarily represent me.
Tom Fornelli
No, this represents the entire show. Because there are some people saying we didn't say anything nice about Wisconsin and that we haven't said anything nice about Wisconsin all year long. First, I want to say I would like to apologize on behalf of all of us, even Danny. Not here. Mikey, behind the mic. That we have not said enough nice things about the 4 and 7 Wisconsin Badgers this year when 3 weeks ago you all wanted to fire your coach, too. I'm sorry. We have not been super positive about this team that you hated all season long until a couple weeks ago. Your defense is legit, though.
Bud Elliott
Like we did not say enough nice things about a team who up until tonight, their best win was a win in which their punter was the leading passer.
Tom Fornelli
Sweet though they were.
Chip Patterson
We've had a couple, couple fake punts. I mean everything is Iowa. Even Iowa had a very Iowa game today. Gave a little bit of hope to Michigan State and Jonathan Smith. Why?
Tom Fornelli
Dude, like I don't know if Jonathan Smith's gonna be fired. I am firmly on the train that if your coach hasn't been fired by now, he's not getting fired. But I might consider it after they routinely kept punting. Decadent. Like he had three incredible punt returns in the game. Iowa's offense didn't do a damn thing all damn game. The only time they did anything was when region would return the punt for the touchdown or he gave him short field position on first. Kick it out of bounds. Tell your punter just kick it out of bounds. Man, why are you kicking to this dude? It's so dumb. But yeah, Iowa, you're not going to believe it. They didn't do a damn thing on offense all night. But somehow in the fourth quarter, thanks to their defense and their special teams, the offense finally did enough to put it together to win a game. Never seen that before in an Iowa football game.
Bud Elliott
I do think Gronowski like load managing himself for three quarters is, is a unique approach.
Tom Fornelli
He's LeBron the first three quarters of the regular season and then he showed up for the playoffs.
Bud Elliott
He goes nuclear in the fourth quarter. Like let me see if I can pull his home passing. Home passing splits. Does it show what quarter it is?
Chip Patterson
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
Okay. Yeah, in the fourth quarter. So he doesn't do a damn thing all game. And then in the fourth quarter he has passes of 17, 33, 13, 19, 6 and 29. Who's the kid?
Tom Fornelli
Ricky. What's the kid's name who made the touchdown grab? Ricky Gill. I think it's hard to remember. Yeah, Iowa games for receivers are even more difficult to remember because you never hear them. But it was. Yeah, it was, it was no Jacob Gill. Yeah, that was an incredible throw by Gronowski and it was even better catch. Like I had no, like when I saw it live, I'm like, there's no way in hell he caught that.
Bud Elliott
They actually have probably their best quarterback prospect coming in that I can remember them signing and they signed like a legitimately good true X receiver prospect Florida last week. Yeah, like those are like. Because we've dogged Iowa for their passing game recruiting for a long time. But they do seem to actually be, like, investing in this and making real attempts to improve it. They could be, like, a decent passing offense within two years.
Chip Patterson
The good news is Kirk Ference is such a spring chicken, you know, Kirk says he's still rocking and rolling. Wants to sign another extension, so.
Tom Fornelli
I knew it. I'd keep them there as long as I could.
Bud Elliott
JMU survives. Washington State couldn't cover this, though. East Carolina does not survive the dome.
Chip Patterson
It's amazing.
Bud Elliott
Is there something that goes on in the dome?
Tom Fornelli
I don't know.
Chip Patterson
I don't know.
Bud Elliott
People are asking.
Tom Fornelli
It feels like UTSA just.
Bud Elliott
They're a step ahead of everybody come.
Tom Fornelli
To life in that place.
Chip Patterson
They get in that building and it's like they know the perfect place.
Bud Elliott
So weird.
Chip Patterson
I don't know.
Tom Fornelli
So weird.
Bud Elliott
This is like that. That Sugar Bowl. Well, both of them that Saban played in for the national title. Just remarkable how it works like that.
Chip Patterson
These cavernous buildings, bud. Yeah. I don't know how it happens. I. It was requested in the tailgate, and so I will grant the request. The number one team in the country did play a conference game today. They did it without their top two wide receivers. Yes. Ohio State was without Jeremiah Smith, who, according to the school, got a little bit banged up in the second half, I believe, of the last game. Carnell Tate missed his third game here. What does that mean? Means a lot of Max Claire. Means a lot of really good. Who's really good.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, it gets completely forgotten about because of the other guys on the team.
Bud Elliott
Like when Max Claire goes top hundred in the draft. Like, wait, what? Like, he's.
Tom Fornelli
Dude.
Chip Patterson
So I made a note during that game that Ohio. There are not many. There are not many. Five teams like Ohio State or five programs like Ohio State going into a season. But one of the things that makes them so difficult to predict correctly when we talk about them is that especially when we know these players, we think about them like NFL teams, like fantasy rosters like Plug and Play, and we're like, oh, and you'll have Jeremiah here and you'll have Tate here, and Claire will be here, and these are all the ways you'll do it. But in reality, they are a young group that needs to grow and they have their own goals. And so it's not always going to be full throttle. All of the tools, all of the toys, all of the time. But, yeah, I felt today like we saw the. The potential of Max Claire in the Ohio State offense that, I don't know, thought could have been there from the, the Texas game. Right. You know, as soon as he showed up in Columbus. So it's not no criticism but it was, it makes teams like Ohio State very difficult to predict because in, in reality it's not fantasy football, especially at the college level. Not everybody can all be awesome all at the same time. But damn what a privilege privilege it is that Ohio State can be down. It's two first round NFL wide receivers and then still have more top 100 talent ready to step up and go. Bo Jackson of course with another big day running the football. So yeah, you're down. Tate, you're down. Jeremiah, Max, Claire and Bo Jackson, you know that that'll be enough to get you home.
Bud Elliott
Also like to the SEC guys in the chat, I get it. We think the SC is deeper. Ohio State could also easily load manage against Mississippi State, Arkansas, Kentucky and this like zombie Florida team.
Tom Fornelli
Easily and still probably LSU if you watch that game at all.
Chip Patterson
Right.
Bud Elliott
And also probably this version of this Missouri team.
Chip Patterson
Tennessee too.
Tom Fornelli
No, they've got load manage against. Oh, okay. I know why you're saying it now. Never mind.
Bud Elliott
Bmac did see what he thought was Smith not walking great on the sideline on the broadcast. I didn't see it. Obviously we don't have DVR in when we're on set but he kind of pointed out. Oh so but there's also video of him I think looking fine when he's standing there kind of moving around somewhat during the sing of the alma mater.
Chip Patterson
It's leg right?
Tom Fornelli
Think so. I, I, I don't know for sure but I bet he's going to be just fine next week.
Chip Patterson
How'd Michigan look to you? That's another team just banged on.
Tom Fornelli
They looked fine. I took the shot on Maryland hoping that maybe they'd catch Michigan sleeping, but they really weren't.
Chip Patterson
What was, let's see what was my note here?
Bud Elliott
Marshmallow again? Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
And Maryland got a touchdown late to make that game look close again. But it was 45 13.
Chip Patterson
Late night fourth quarter because you're already down. Obviously Haynes is done for the season. You're down. Marshall still were able to move the ball pretty effectively.
Tom Fornelli
You've got Bryson Kudzel.
Chip Patterson
Kudzel's good.
Bud Elliott
Another two drops from Maryland.
Tom Fornelli
Say there's, I bet you there's more when you watch the tape.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. So both. It's like Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon. A lot of these teams are banged up heading into big games here at the end of the season with college football playoff hopes on the line. Anything else from the day I did not get a chance to watch Iowa State, Kansas, Iowa State, 138 to 14 life.
Bud Elliott
I did, I did watch that.
Chip Patterson
Okay. Because lifelong Iowa State fan Chris Hassell, I'm gonna say it again for the people in the back, lifelong Iowa State appreciator Chris Hassell said it was the most complete game that they've played in weeks.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, they, they ran the ball all over them. Kansas has higher expectations now. Like missing a bowl. When you're getting donations of 600 million, it doesn't really seem to be acceptable.
Chip Patterson
So.
Bud Elliott
And I get it, right? Like you're paying that much. Expect more. Yeah. Iowa State just, they came ready to play. Kansas did not look ready to play. They looked a lot like Louisville.
Chip Patterson
Louisville breaking out a little deuce out. Wait, hold on. It was deuce. Wait, it was. Do something then Brady Allen, right? Let me get see, pull up my notes. I mean, we were get, we were going deep. Deuce Adams, Brady Allen. Jennings was. Hey, Jennings doesn't look as hobbled, right. For now, knock on wood.
Bud Elliott
But like, he looks quick.
Chip Patterson
He looks as healthy as he's looked in a while. He ends up throwing for more than 300 yards. He has four total touchdowns, three passing, one rushing. SMU kick their ass.
Tom Fornelli
You know, we haven't talked about yet the most embarrassing loss for anybody in the Big Ten tonight. Penn State 37, Nebraska 10. Got Penn State players chanting for Terry Smith to get the job. Really don't think it's going to happen. But all Penn State's targets seem to be not going there.
Chip Patterson
Kicking Matt Rules ass is funny.
Tom Fornelli
K. Tron Allen, I think took the yardage record from Saquon and I think Nick Singleton took the touchdown record, if I remember correctly. I didn't really watch this game.
Chip Patterson
The career numbers.
Bud Elliott
Yeah, I watched it like, like I, I. If you knew Penn State was going to show up, Penn State was a great bet because like on the lines of scrimmage, they're just way better than Nebraska. But like, it's hard to trust that with an interim guy.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah. Also Grunk Meyer. Like, he is the backup, but he's not really the backup anymore. And whereas you could still qualify Lateef as the backup at Nebraska.
Chip Patterson
Did you, as you were noting the, the JMU survival, were you watching along the way as to what, how they got there?
Bud Elliott
Like, we did not have it on. Like, I couldn't get it on the.
Tom Fornelli
They had a pick six in the first half.
Chip Patterson
Like Wazoo scored off a pick six.
Tom Fornelli
No, no. JMU scored off a pick six.
Chip Patterson
Oh, so they were chasing.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, they were down early. They had, they got to pick six and then Wazoo kind of took the lead and it was in the second half like they outscored him 14:3 in the second half. It was 17:10 at halftime. So I mean I give credit. I was watching the game. It was my Twitter tip of the day. It was on one of my screens. I Wazu played well. I mean it's really all there was to it. James Madison came out kind of flat and Wazoo was the team that traveled all the way across the country for an early start time and did not look flat at all in the first part of the game. So. But they just, I mean James Madison was just better over 60 minutes.
Chip Patterson
I don't know how to quantify this or what it even means, but the fact that Washington State has shown up in Oxford, Mississippi, Charlottesville, Virginia and Harrisonburg ready to fly fight makes me like them. I don't again, I have no idea if that's worth anything, but I just, I think it, it speaks.
Tom Fornelli
It means a lot to the guys in the locker room to know that Chip Patterson likes them.
Chip Patterson
We'll figure out ways to quantify this. The Chip Olytics are taking note as we Prepare for our PAC12 previews. You know, our month long series Previewing the new PAC12 set to run in June of 2026. We'll do a whole, we'll do, we'll do a whole episode on Washington State season. I had prepared a bit about you know, A R I Z O N a B A Y L O R. What do you have? No Ds, no defense. Just because of the way the Arizona Baylor started out but Wildcats settled in and.
Tom Fornelli
Laid down.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, it was. That was it. 41:17 Arizona improves to 8 and 3 in a very successful season. The Bears which announced earlier this week that Dave Aranda will be back. They fall to five and six eating a win next week to be bowl eligible.
Bud Elliott
Isn't Arizona happy that they did not fire Brent Brennan 101 year after. Like I always thought it was ridiculous. Like think about late in the process he took over.
Chip Patterson
I did not think it was Fish.
Bud Elliott
Fish didn't leave for Washington until after DeBoer went to Alabama.
Tom Fornelli
Right?
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I did not think it was ridiculous but I it was clearly not a smart instinct.
Bud Elliott
So they also like have a really.
Chip Patterson
Good recruiting class coming in the 26 cycle. Yeah, they set.
Bud Elliott
I mean like they do a nice job of telling Id like like a bunch of their guys just got bumps.
Chip Patterson
I was Talking with our friend Robbie Calland about this, they've like taken Kansas's spot of being the Mendoza Line in that conference.
Tom Fornelli
Yep.
Chip Patterson
Kansas used to be that the middle team. Like, are you, are you a good team? Kansas might not be able to get you. Like, are you a bad team? They'll beat you. And Arizona right now kind of has one of those squats where they're playing really solid football and if you don't bring it, they'll beat you. Especially if you, if you're not one of the very best teams in the league.
Bud Elliott
They really only have one bad game. I mean, they had the, they have an overtime loss to byu and they lost to Houston by a field goal.
Tom Fornelli
They should be ranked. Did you guys see any of Cal, Stanford?
Chip Patterson
I did not, no.
Tom Fornelli
There was the one great moment where Andrew Luck was doing the interview on the sideline, but he was watching the play and there was the scoop and score. And as soon as the ball comes out, Andrew Luck screams ball. And then the Stanford player picks it up. He's immediately screaming and running away because the guy's going for a touchdown. And also, I do love the stare at the end of the game between the Cal fans and the Stanford fans with the trophy when they, when they finally hand it over at the end. I just want all the guys that were in that stare to know that I'm very proud of you all for making eye contact and maintaining it with a girl for the first time in your lives. Congratulations, boys.
Chip Patterson
So, as Tom said, Tom says that the Arizona Wildcats should be ranked at 8 and 3. Will they be ranked? Find out, because coming up on the other side, we take a look at the changes that we expect to see in the new AP Top 25 poll. All that and more, This show is brought to you by BetterHelp. Chip Patterson
Back here, you know what I'm saying?
Bud Elliott
Like this needs to happen. Not now, but like progressively.
Tom Fornelli
Yep, maybe we'll maybe in the weeks to come.
Chip Patterson
Back here on the COVID 3 podcast, every single Saturday night, we like to take a little bit of time to take a look at what the new AP Top 25 is going to look like on Sunday after Week 13 results where Ohio State obviously cruised. No change at number one. Indiana was off. Texas A and M played Sanford. Georgia played Charlotte. Ole Miss was off. So no changes in the top five, right? Wrong. So the Oregon Ducks were in a tie for sixth place with Texas Tech in last week's AP Top 25 poll, and there were just 32 voting points separating Oregon from Ole Miss. That is 1331 to 1299. So when I say 32 voting points. I need you to know how small that is in terms of the actual margin between those two teams. They are both one loss teams. And I think that as Ole Miss was off and Oregon got one of the best weeks, one of the best wins of the weekend, there is indeed some room for some movement where voters could be influenced to move the Ducks up. USC is in my opinion the best win on Oregon schedule. If you felt that good about Oregon without a USC win, I think there has to be a higher stock price. After the USC win, when comparing resumes, when again, Texas Tech, the team they were tied with, was off. Ole Miss, the team that is just 32 voting points above them, was off. I feel like that is one spot where we could see something within the top 10 where a lot's going to be stagnant. I could see the Ducks moving up to the five spot.
Bud Elliott
I got no problem with that.
Tom Fornelli
I don't know. I thought Ole Miss looked really good on their pie. Lane was hugging the headlines. Even today while they weren't playing, Lane was hugging the headlines.
Chip Patterson
Do you, do you think he's going to make his announcement on a pregame show?
Tom Fornelli
I, I wouldn't put it past him. But I mean, I think if, I think the problem with that theory is it's very obvious to know what the decision is if he's doing it on.
Chip Patterson
A pregame show because it would get out before he announces it because he's.
Tom Fornelli
Not going to go on and announce he's leaving for another school.
Chip Patterson
Well, but. So the game is on Friday, but the popular pregame shows on Saturday morning.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I don't know.
Bud Elliott
I don't know.
Tom Fornelli
I just, I can't wait for the 45 more updates that we get this week about teams preparing offers. How does one prepare an offer? Like, do you have to like put it in the microwave?
Chip Patterson
No, you have to send it to your attorney for you write it out and then you send it to legal. And in the 24 hours it's going to take to get it back, you.
Bud Elliott
Tell people no, unless you're LSU. And then it takes either zero hours or like 25 days to get any kind of like coaching decision made, depending on who you ask.
Chip Patterson
Oklahoma. Oklahoma may get a chance, but I just think they're, I mean they're already the highest ranked two loss team in the country. I just, I don't know if there's anywhere for them to go. But obviously we take note, we recognize them being able to boost an already pretty strong resume with the win. Even if Missouri is One of those teams that we are projecting is going to be falling out of the AP top 25. I do think that there is a chance that Miami could jump ahead of Utah. Speaking back to margins, that was 795 to 773, just 22 voting points between those two teams. Even if it was just the aesthetics of throwing for a touchdown on fourth down, winning by 17 versus having to overcome having to overcome multiple double digit deficits. Could see a little swap right there. Question that is very difficult to answer with any confidence at least on my end and I do this every week is where Georgia Tech will land. So I don't know if you want to take a look at Georgia Tech's resume but the best thing for Georgia Tech this is not me arguing with a clear eyed view of their resume. I want to be clear. This is me speaking from the predicting voting behavior seat. The best thing about Georgia Tech is that they started 8. 0 because if you actually take a week by week, opponent by opponent, look at what this resume looks like on pretty November 23rd in the early hours. It ain't pretty. That's right, Tom. It's just you could throw them all the way out. But again from a predicting voter behavior position, I think that they are basically being held together not by the opponents that they've beaten but just by the fact that they started eight. No. And that now there just might be a little bit of a hesitancy to toss that same team that you got so used to putting at the top of your ballot all the way out of your ballot. We'll see though.
Tom Fornelli
I mean let's say it was a fun thought exercise in a way but it's not really, it's not that difficult because I was going to ask. They have different records and obviously Wake lost to Georgia Tech, but I feel like there's an argument, argument that you could make that Wake deserves to be ranked more right now than Georgia Tech.
Chip Patterson
Does based on Wake's wins, based on.
Tom Fornelli
The win over Virginia.
Bud Elliott
Also Wake got completely screwed on a bad college Georgia Tech. And like that is also true, like one of the real screw jobs of the year.
Chip Patterson
I mean you could go back and you grab the Wake game. You look at Boston College, obviously the NC State loss, the Pit loss. I mean the last six. I mean half of this season has been a little bit iffy results for the Yellow Jackets.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah, I think they'll take. I don't think they're going to be in the top 20.
Chip Patterson
They will fall. I've. I said they'll the landing spot is somewhere in that, like below Tennessee. Right. And then I think that we're going to have, you know, some, some new additions that will be popping in there that could, you know, shake things up just a little bit in terms of teams right near the edge of the rankings. Not too. I don't think USC falls that far, honestly.
Tom Fornelli
You know, two or three spots.
Chip Patterson
Yeah, I've got, I've got them down.
Bud Elliott
There, but in that, like they're still ahead of Tennessee.
Chip Patterson
Right. I've got them. I've said Tennessee's the, the matching point, you know. Yeah, you can go slot them in there. I. Right above them. That kind of 18, 19 range.
Bud Elliott
Like USC has better wins, but Tennessee has better losses.
Chip Patterson
No, listen, I don't think USC's losses are bad at all.
Tom Fornelli
Well, the Illinois one got worse.
Chip Patterson
I mean, it got worse, but it's. So it's a two point road loss at an Illinois team that obviously today wasn't great, but it's not horrendous. I mean, it's still a, what, eight win team Seven.
Tom Fornelli
You were right not to rank them last week. I'm sorry.
Chip Patterson
Okay. Out of the rankings. Missouri, Houston. I got a really tricky group here. Tom has indicated that teams getting in while they're off, really, really hard to happen. So I guess Navy, which was 26th last week, I did a deep dive on this. Navy actually was on. Let's see, where was I? On 31 ballots last week. Most of those rankings were straight up 25. They were as high as 21. So maybe Navy does break in. Also keep your eye on SMU, which is now 8 and 3 and obviously might get any extra attention because of their inroads to the ACC championship game. The potential for SMU to be back in the College Football Playoff for a second straight season under Rhett Lashley. Also, the team that just beat Georgia Tech, the Pitt Panthers, might be another one to keep an eye on. Illinois was on the watch list. Arizona. I just don't know what you're going to get for winning at Colorado, but those are the other teams based on last week's balloting that I thought could get a little bit of extra attention.
Bud Elliott
I just. I think you have like an issue when you put JMU nor Texas and those guys in there. You're not going to drop them out.
Tom Fornelli
If they keep winning. Correct.
Chip Patterson
And so other teams that would be better on a neutral field are not getting into the AP Top 25 because of the loss order.
Tom Fornelli
You do this every week, so maybe you pay more attention to it than I do. Because James Madison obviously ranked in the AP last week. Not ranked by the cfp. Do you expect to see the AP follow suit like they do in other instances?
Chip Patterson
They don't follow suit with some of these group of fives.
Tom Fornelli
Okay.
Chip Patterson
They dig in their position.
Tom Fornelli
Typically hipsters.
Chip Patterson
Yep. Yeah.
Tom Fornelli
Okay. Which checks out because I, I think the CFP will counter on Tuesday by ranking both Tulane and Navy.
Bud Elliott
Do we think that Arizona like they will follow suit and Arizona State and SMU will be the two jump in the AP. I mean, because Arizona State was 25 in the CFP.
Chip Patterson
Correct. But the thing is Arizona State's already on the radar. 26, 27. They were 29th. They had less voting points than SMU did last week. So we're talking about teams that were already kind of pit. Also was another team that was right there in the mix getting, getting some decent support already.
Bud Elliott
Has Tennessee really not beaten a single team with a record above.500?
Tom Fornelli
Not power 14. They might have beaten one in their non conference. I know Missouri hasn't beaten one period.
Chip Patterson
Then.
Tom Fornelli
Yeah.
Bud Elliott
USC should not be dropping below.
Tom Fornelli
And Tulane has now too. We have to strike two lane, because since Northwestern won, they're six and five. So now Tulane has a win over P14 with the winning record. So now it's just Tennessee and Missouri who don't.
Bud Elliott
Jeez.
Tom Fornelli
That.
Bud Elliott
That, that's a, that's a really nice schedule for the Falls to have. And what's kind of like a, you know, somewhat of a rebuilding year.
Chip Patterson
But that three point loss, bud, it would have all changed. That kick goes in, right? Yeah.
Bud Elliott
And they also needed overtime to beat Mississippi State, but. And they beat Arkansas by three. Yeah, that's true.
Chip Patterson
Vanderbilt, Tennessee in Knoxville. That one is a Saturday 3:30 game. Next week. Week. All right. As always, you can check out tomorrow's top 25 today over on CBS sports.com all right. What in anything else I will say programming note Monday, no changes. Upon further review, 11:00am Eastern Time. Then because it is a holiday week, Tuesday will be big game breakdown. Now our start time might be a little bit earlier. So we're not on at noon on CBS Sports Network. This will be on YouTube. YouTube.com cover three. Big game breakdown. Tom Fornelli
By Monday, Danny's trying to drag my ass out of bed kind of early. I'm just gonna let the. Let the listeners know now it might be early in the day.
Chip Patterson
I mean nine. He's old.
Tom Fornelli
He's up at 4am every day. You know how old people are. They're in bed by eight and up by four.
Chip Patterson
So Danny wants to go early 97th minute. Now, if we're using soccer terms, it's probably going to be 9:30am Eastern Time. We'll see, we'll figure it. We'll get that.
Tom Fornelli
I'm gonna be great. My big game breakdown is going to be some yawns.
Chip Patterson
Shouts to Yale, shouts to Yale, shout out to.
Tom Fornelli
I mean this was a great day for Barton Simmons, period. Yale beats Harvard and they're apparently getting a 5 star QB. What a day to be Barton Simmons.
Chip Patterson
What a day.
Bud Elliott
We did talk about this on the COVID through recruiting hour like a month ago. Georgia fans told Ivan's that he was nuts to think that like Vandy could pull that off.
Chip Patterson
Oh.
Bud Elliott
You guys should listen to that. Yeah.
Chip Patterson
Yeah. Then Wednesday is when we will have our week 14 locks. So again Monday, upon further review, 11:00am Eastern time on YouTube. Tuesday, big game breakdown, 9:30am Eastern Time on YouTube. Hopefully we, we will all be able to take in all of the, the football that we want before the end of this season. Any other final notes?
