The reward for great work and exceeding expectations

In my recent conversation with Ryan Hawk, I shared an idea that I can't stop thinking about. And it's this quote that says, the person who loves to run will go further than the person who loves the destination. I was speaking with another friend of mine this week. He's had a lot of success with his digital agency, and as the agency has grown, things have just gotten harder. You know, it's like the reward for doing great work is the opportunity to do more great work. The reward for exceeding expectations is still higher expectations. So I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you are setting out on a journey that you enjoy for the sake of the journey, because there is no success that is like, clap your hands, pat yourself on the back, and that success is meaning you're done. Really. You know, success is a starting point for the next thing, or at least it can and probably should be. So if you are setting out on the journey because you want the destination, your period of enjoyment is going to be so brief. Whereas if you set out on the journey because you enjoy the journey, when you get the rewards of success, which is more work, or when you get the higher expectations because you've exceeded expectations, the challenge of that is something that you still look forward to and enjoy. There are a lot of people who are very destination obsessed and it makes the journey itself not enjoyable. And when you get to the destination, you get that thing that you think you wanted. You realize, oh, all this does is set me up with the opportunity to do that again. And if you didn't enjoy the first journey, you're certainly not going to enjoy the second journey where it's harder and the expectations are higher. So really can't overemphasize the idea that you really need to be doing something that you enjoy for the sake of doing it, because it only gets harder. Expectations only get higher. And there's no point in going on this journey if it's not the one that you enjoy for the sake of it. I hope you have a great weekend. I've got a couple more things here on my list before I call it a weekend Writing my newsletter. I'm also planning my Black Friday strategy. It's a topic of conversation in the lab right now. We're all sharing our Black Friday strategies and in fact, we're having a live session on Monday to collaborate and go through our plans for Black Friday Cyber Monday. If you've been on the fence about joining the lab, this is the type of conversation we have in there all the time. I think this is an exceptionally good time to join us in the lab. You can apply@creatorscience.com lab or you can join the basic tier right now. It's an absolute bargain. Would highly recommend it. If you have any questions, reach out to me and let me know. But this is an excellent time to join our community there of full time creators. And if you join before Black Friday and we help you put your Black Friday strategy in place, it's probably going to pay for itself pretty quickly. So hope to see you in there. But if not, I hope you have a great weekend and I'll talk to you on Tuesday.

Drawing from personal conversations and experiences, Jay emphasizes the importance of cultivating a love for the process to sustain long-term success and fulfillment.
Key Quote:
“The person who loves to run will go further than the person who loves the destination.” — Jay Clouse [00:01]
Jay begins by referencing a thought-provoking quote he shared with Ryan Hawk, highlighting the fundamental difference between those who enjoy the journey and those who are solely destination-oriented. This mindset shift is crucial for creators aiming to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of content creation.
As creators achieve success, they often encounter higher expectations and increased demands. Jay discusses his friend's experience running a digital agency, where success led to more significant challenges rather than mere accolades.
Key Quote:
"The reward for doing great work is the opportunity to do more great work. The reward for exceeding expectations is still higher expectations." — Jay Clouse [00:45]
This cycle of escalating expectations can be daunting. Jay underscores that without a genuine passion for the ongoing process, the allure of success quickly diminishes, making it harder to maintain motivation and satisfaction.
Jay passionately argues that the true essence of sustained success lies in enjoying every step of the journey. When creators derive pleasure from their daily tasks and challenges, they remain resilient and eager to tackle new opportunities that arise from their achievements.
Key Quote:
"Success is a starting point for the next thing." — Jay Clouse [02:15]
By framing success as a springboard rather than a final destination, creators can continuously evolve and embrace new projects with enthusiasm. This perspective not only enhances personal fulfillment but also fosters a dynamic and adaptable creative practice.
Focusing solely on end goals can lead to burnout and decreased satisfaction. Jay points out that destination-obsessed individuals often miss out on the richness of their experiences along the way.
Key Quote:
"There are a lot of people who are very destination obsessed and it makes the journey itself not enjoyable. And when you get to the destination, you realize, oh, all this does is set me up with the opportunity to do that again." — Jay Clouse [04:00]
This realization can create a relentless cycle of chasing new goals without ever truly enjoying past accomplishments. Jay advocates for a balanced approach where the journey is as rewarding as the destination itself.
Jay Clouse wraps up the episode by reiterating the paramount importance of loving the creative journey. By prioritizing enjoyment and fulfillment in the day-to-day process, creators can navigate the inevitable challenges of growth with grace and resilience.
Final Insight:
"I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you are setting out on a journey that you enjoy for the sake of the journey, because there is no success that is like, clap your hands, pat yourself on the back, and that success is meaning you're done." — Jay Clouse [06:30]
Embracing this mindset ensures that success becomes a catalyst for continued growth and exploration, rather than a final destination that halts progress and diminishes passion.
Takeaways:
Jay Clouse's insightful discussion in this episode serves as a valuable guide for creators seeking to navigate the complexities of growth while maintaining a deep-seated passion for their work. By internalizing these principles, creators can achieve sustainable success and lasting satisfaction in their creative journeys.
