Since the Lab is nearly three years old at this point, we launched it in March of 2022. There are literal years of past posts and content that are really high quality, high signal stuff that you know can easily get lost to time. And I've been trying to go back and find some of those threads and we had a member dig up this post From January of 2023 that was titled New Year Question what would your replacement do? And this is a question from Andy Grove, who is the former CEO of Intel, and Cat Mulvihill, another member of the Lab, actually helped me find this question first. And in his book, I forget which book it was, I think it might have been High Impact Management by Andy Grove. He said there was a question that they would use when making business decisions and it was if I were replaced tomorrow, what would my successor do? I'll read that again. If I were replaced tomorrow, meaning replaced as CEO, what would my successor do? The person who is replacing me, what changes would they make to the business? He said. I believe this one question can illuminate so much about your business since it gives you some distance and perspective that's not always easy to find when you're in it day to day. So in 2023 I took this question and made a literal list and I said, here's what my replacement would do. They would rename the podcast to Creator Science. At the time it was called Creative Elements. They would rename the YouTube channel to Creator Science JClouse. Again, at the time it was Creative Elements. Create a quiz to segment subscribers right away. Create email sequences specific to those segments. Create one to two low priced self paced courses relevant to those segments. Add a lower content only membership to the Lab. Double Focus on YouTube. Add sponsorship to YouTube. Transition from interviews to conversations on the podcast. Write a book and cut down on calls meetings. With the exception of writing a book, I have done all those things and I remember writing this post at the time or making this list because all of those ideas seemed so scary either in terms of the amount of work involved or the logistics behind it or whatever. That was a list of things that I knew I should do, but I just couldn't quite get myself to do. And that's what this question really pulls to the surface when you ask yourself, if I was replaced tomorrow by a third party whose only job was to make my business better, what decisions would they make? You know, assuming they are capable and smart, what decisions would my successor make? I love this question because it makes you be more objective about your business. It gives you some distance from it and you can see, you know, a lot of the answers. You know, what you should be doing. This question really pulls it out of you. And when you have this list staring you in the face of things that you know you should do that someone who replaced you would do immediately, it's really confronting, but in a positive way because it helps you prioritize those things. So I am going to spend the weekend ruminating on this question, answering it again, because making that list, it's crazy to look at this list and see I did all those things. It's hard to remember when those things weren't true because they were all good decisions that have been impactful on the growth of the business. And have a feeling that if I were to do the same exercise again and say, what would my replacement do now? I would come up with a good list of ideas. So I would challenge you to do the same. If you're here on Spotify, leave a comment with some of your answers here. I would love to see what you come up with. If you want to see my answers, let me know and I'll put them as a comment here on Spotify as well. I hope you have a great weekend and I'll be talking to you on Tuesday.
