This is Crime House. Today we're covering two cases making headlines. First is the murder trial of Jeffrey Spence and if the allegations against him are true, this crime was a family affair. Then we'll cover the case of Richard Alquist, who was taken into custody after getting caught on camera by the news crew reporting on his alleged crimes. Let's get into it. 67 year old Jeffrey Spence is on trial accused of killing his daughter's boyfriend Kirby carpenter in late 2022.

Every day, but there is something about the paranormal that terrifies me, and Shelby Oaks grabbed me from the first scene and did not let go. It's about a woman desperately searching for her sister and the deeper she goes, the more she starts to realize that the demon they thought was imaginary as kids might not be imaginary after all. No spoilers, but let's just say I was glued to the screen. Critics are raving about it, calling it deeply wicked and downright evil. Truly terrifying and the Blair Witch Project meets Hereditary. And honestly, they're not exaggerating. What makes it even cooler is that it's written and directed by Chris Stuckman, a YouTuber turned filmmaker, and it's executive produced by Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind some of the best horror in recent years. Shelby Oaks is one of the most unnerving films I've seen this year, and it's meant to be experienced in theaters, so don't miss it. Shelby oaks hits theaters October 24th.

Before we get into today's main cases, I want to share something I read about recently that made me sick. Authorities in Sarasota County, Florida say that two adults, 36 year old Bradley Santos and 35 year old Rosanella Borja, have been charged with child neglect. Why? Because they allegedly abandoned a 16 year old on the side of Interstate 75 with two loaded handguns, ammunition and cash. The boy who was left on the side of the road told police that on October 1, around 6pm he was traveling with the couple and his 8 year old sibling in a 2006 Toyota 4Runner when they began frantically packing duffel bags at home. He said they had been acting weird leading up to packing, and they said they planned to relocate to either Idaho or Guam. When he told them he didn't want to go, the couple reportedly pulled over, handed him two bags containing multiple guns, cash and ammunition, and then drove off, instructing him to take care of the house. The boy's phone was dead, so he walked until police found him near the Sumter Boulevard exit. Investigators returned with the boy to his Northport home, where they found the garage and front doors left wide open, the inside of the house in complete disarray, and firearms lying out in the open. The couple was later located in Huachula, which is about 60 miles away, and they were arrested on October 3rd. They are both being held at Sarasota county jail on $500,000 bonds each, with the arraignment scheduled for October 31st. So we'll definitely keep an eye on this one. I'm very curious as to what they may have been fleeing from and why they decided to choose Guam or Idah of all places. Make sure to tune into our socials rmehouse24.7 for any possible leads. For today's first case, we're covering the trial of Jeffrey Spence, a man in Mississippi who's accused of murdering his daughter, Caitlyn's boyfriend. With help from Caitlyn and her mother. The proceeding started late last month, but when the jury couldn't reach a verdict, the judge declared a mistrial. A big reason for the deadlock was Caitlyn's testimony against her father. Now a new trial is expected to be begin sometime in 2026. After that, Caitlyn, who accepted a plea deal, will be sentenced for her part in the crime. Let's get into it. It's 2020 and 33 year old Kaitlin Spence and 36 year old Kirby Carpenter met at a tractor supply store. They begin dating and two years later Caitlyn gives birth to their daughter Enola. They all live together in Mississippi along with Kirby's son from another relationship. But allegedly this isn't a healthy environment for Caitlyn and the kids to be in. According to her, Kirby is verbally and physically abusive at times. His hot temper also extends to others in their community, which could be related in part to the fact that according to Caitlyn, Kirby is a drug dealer. Despite Kirby's hothead reputation, Caitlyn says that nothing especially bad happened between them just before he died. But at the time, Caitlyn's parents, 67 year old Jeffrey and 65 year old Karen are staying with them to help take care of the couple's newborn daughter. So he was most likely on his best behavior. Then after Thanksgiving 2022, Jeffrey and Karen return home to Virginia and tragedy strikes. A few days later, Kaitlin's parents leave. On December 2, 2022, Caitlin frantically calls 91 1. She tells the dispatcher that she just found her boyfriend's dead body near an out storage shed next to their house. When police arrive, they find Kaitlin there as well as Kirby's mother. They're both distraught. The officers examine Kirby's body and quickly realize that he'd suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and neck, likely from a shotgun. However, they also notice other details that suggest Kirby's body was intentionally stashed away. He's covered by a tarp and a large toolbox. It seems like the toolbox has been placed there to prevent the tarp from blowing off. Plus, the entrance to the shed is not visible from the main entrance of the house, which might be why someone thought it would make a good hiding spot. From there, officers noticed some things that help them begin to piece together what happened. There are drag marks between the spot where Kirby's body is found and the carport, which is about 30ft away. Police enter the carport and see that the drag marks end at the Pool of blood inside. This makes them think Kirby was shot in the carport before being dragged to the shed. Investigators speak with Caitlin to try and figure out who would have wanted to do this. That's how they learned that Kirby owned multiple rental properties in the area, as well as a business called Mississippi Gold, Silver and Coin Exchange. On top of that, a further search of his body reveals that Kirby had $2,868 in cash on him. Kirby's mom tells the officers that he always carried cash, and in fact, he usually had even more. Apparently, Kirby always carried a bag containing between 200,000 and $300,000. However, that bag isn't anywhere to be seen. To the officers, it's becoming clear that Kirby's murder is likely financially motivated. But pretty soon, things get a little more complicated. Police notice that Kaitlin and Kirby's home is equipped with multiple security cameras. Kaitlin says this is because of Kirby's business dealings and his reputation for carrying high amounts of cash. The officers feel optimistic. They expect to see the killer in the footage. But when they ask Caitlin to retrieve the footage, they realize the cameras have been disabled, which makes investigators think Kirby was killed by someone with access to the house. Investigators have a lot of questions. For now, Kirby's body is brought to the medical examiner's office while they continue searching for clues. Meanwhile, Caitlyn's parents quickly return to Mississippi to attend Kirby's funeral, which is held several weeks later. Shortly after, the results of Kirby's autopsy come back. And they spark even more suspicion because, according to the me, Kirby was in fact killed by a shotgun wound to the chest. However, he sustained that fatal wound around 7pm on Nov. 30, two days before Kaitlin found his body. Detectives quickly bring her back in for questioning. They want to try and understand the reason for the gap in time and how Caitlin didn't find him sooner. She tells them that she didn't see or speak to Kirby for those two days beginning on November 30th. She says she tried to get a hold of him multiple times, but never could, and that the next time she saw her boyfriend was when she found the body. Detectives seem to believe Caitlin's story. They have no reason to keep her in custody, so they let her go. Her parents stay in town with her for the next few weeks, and then on December 20, they head back to Virginia, and Caitlin and Enola go too, to move in with them. After that, the investigation stalls. All signs are pointing to a robbery gone wrong, but detectives have no solid leads until almost one year later in November 2023. At that time, back in Mississippi, a man named David Barnes is arrested for burglary. While speaking to police, David breaks down in tears and tells police he has valuable information related to Kirby Carpenter's murder case. What David tells police forces them to realize they may have let Kirby's killer get away.

In November of 2023, a man named David Barnes tells police that he knows how Kirby Carpenter died. David used to work for Kirby and claims that after Kirby's death in December 2022, his girlfriend, Kaitlin Spence, told David that her father was the one who pulled the trigger after things, quote, got out of hand. After hearing David's statement, officers obtained a search warrant for the Spences home and head to Virginia. Once there, they uncover a slew of evidence. First, when officers confront the family, they ask if they'll find any firearms in the house. Karen, Katelyn's mom, tells them no. However, under Jeffrey and Karen's bed, police find a shotgun wrapped in a blue jacket. Then, in a later search of Jeffrey's car, they find about $17,000 in cash as well as the keys to a safety deposit box. Investigators are able to access the safety deposit box and find $38,000 worth of gold bars and coins, counterfeit cash, and a $90 check in Kirby's name made out to David Barnes. All these clues suggest that the Spence family killed Kirby Carpenter for his money. Now authorities just have to figure out how they planned and carried everything out Kaitlin, Jeffrey and Karen are all extradited back to Mississippi and and indicted on conspiracy, larceny and capital murder charges. Based on David's statement, the person suspected of actually pulling the trigger is Jeffrey. Then, In April of 2025, Caitlyn accepts a plea deal in exchange for agreeing to testify truthfully against her parents. Her charges are reduced to accessory after the fact of grand larceny and she pleads guilty. Later, in September 2025, Karen also accepts a plea deal and enters an Alford plea in order to avoid trial. She's sentenced to 10 years in prison, suspended in full, meaning she is immediately released on unsupervised probation. That same month. On September 24, Jeffrey's trial begins and Caitlyn testifies against him. She claims that she didn't initially know what happened to Kirby, but that in the weeks following his death, she became suspicious of her father. One of the first things to give her pause was a text Caitlin received from her dad where he said they should start a business called Assassins Inc. Sometime after that, while on a hike, Caitlin finally asked her father to tell her the truth, and he admitted that in November of 2022, after Thanksgiving with her and Kirby, he and Karen left on the 29th and went back to Virginia. But one day later, on November 30th, Jeffrey drove back to Mississippi and asked Kirby to sell some drugs for him. Kirby either argued or refused, so Jeffrey shot him and left his body near the shed. Two days later, on December 2nd, Caitlyn found him. According to Caitlin, after Jeffrey admitted all of this to her, he got angry and threatened her not to tell anyone or else she could lose custody of her daughter. To corroborate Caitlin's story, prosecutors also point out that just two hours before Kirby's body was found, his safety deposit box at the bank was opened and that Jeffrey not only knew where Caitlin and Kirby hid their spare key, but he knew how to disable the security cameras. Prosecutors also called Caitlin's sister Carolyn to the stand to give more insight into their father's criminal tendencies. According to Carolyn, back in 2014, Jeffrey and Karen were facing financial issues after Jeffrey faced charges relating to embezzlement and lost his job. The couple moved in with Carolyn after that. While staying with Carolyn, Jeffrey often watched shows like Breaking Bad and the Blacklist and made comments about how he would kill someone. Apparently, he once said he would use a shotgun because it's easier to dispose of the cartridges. Caitlin and Carolyn's testimonies paint Jeffrey as the one behind all of the violence. But there are also some holes in Caitlin's story. Most notably, the defense points out that the timeline simply doesn't add up because driving back and forth between Virginia and Mississippi would take between 30 and 36 hours. So there's no way Jeffrey could have done it in one day. From there, Jeffrey's lawyers focus on the fact that there's not enough evidence to prove prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he's the one who actually pulled the trigger or stashed the body or when he obtained the items found in his car and safety deposit box. Something important to point out is that according to some sources, before the Spence family was arrested, Kirby's mother witnessed Jeffrey putting a bag full of silver coins worth thousands of dollars into the trunk of his car. However, we don't know when she first told authorities about this. Something else worth noting is that David Barnes does not testify. The defense says he's an unreliable witness who only pointed the blame at the Spence family to help his burglary case. Finally, the defense points the finger back at Caitlin. They argue that Kaitlin not only used to aid Kirby in his drug deals, but weapons dealings too, and that she's only blaming her father to avoid facing consequences for that. They also remind the court that Kirby had major anger issues and was known to be abusive to Caitlin, suggesting this was her motive to kill him. Finally, when arguments wrap five days later on September 29, the jury has a lot to think about. But they only deliberate for about three hours before informing the judge that they're deadlocked. Six to six. The judge tells him to keep deliberating. About an hour and a half later, they say the same thing. They can't reach a verdict. The judge has no choice but to declare a mistrial. When this is announced, Kirby's mother is so overcome with emotion, she collapses. Medics are called and fortunately she's okay. But she has to wait about a year for another chance at seeking justice for her son. A new trial is expected to begin sometime in 2023. According to posts on social media, Caitlyn was released from jail in April 2025. Her sentencing has been deferred until after her father's trial wraps, and hopefully next time, Kirby's loved ones will be able to get the closure they deserve.

Today's second case is out of Idaho Springs, Colorado. On September 26th, an armed burglary suspect was finally arrested after news crews reporting on the story captured the man on camera. He was identified as 32 year old Richard Applequist. Applequist is now facing numerous charges and authorities are looking into him as a possible suspect in similar cases. Let's unpack all the bizarre moments that led up to this arrest. Between September 23rd and 25th, 2025, numerous residents in Idaho Springs are burglarized by a man who's stolen items and damaged police property outside their homes. The man is caught on multiple home security cameras in broad daylight. He's wearing a black ski mask and a dark hoodie, cargo pants and combat boots. He's also carrying a gun. After two days, he's stolen about $2,000 in items and caused another $2,000 of damage. In one instance, the man approaches a camera and speaks to the residents inside through the live video feed. He says he's with the Forest Service and that he's looking for someone. The people inside the home seem confused. They ask if he's dropping off a package, but the man simply repeats himself. Then he disconnects the camera, hoping to catch the man in the act. Police deploy drones to the area where he's been active, and on the evening of September 25, they spot him near a major road known as Highway 103. Officers rush to the area and the man jumps into a white Ford escape SUV with no license plates and races off. Pretty soon the SUV rolls into a ditch and the man flees on foot. Police immediately begin a ground search, but to no avail. The man has gotten away, but since they know he's armed, authorities issue a short lockdown. By the next morning on September 26, there's been no sign of the man and lockdown is lifted. At this point, the story is heating up. People all over Idaho Springs are tracking updates on the search that same morning, a CBS News anchor named Justin Adams is getting ready to report on the case from an area near Highway 103 where the Chase occurred. Adams speaks to the police and obtains a description of the suspect, even though people have already seen footage of the man, Adams. Adams likes to do his due diligence, which is why he asks for the official description. Police tell him they're looking for a Black man between 5, 10 and 6ft tall with a thin build. Adams thanks them and gets ready to report. Moments later, while cameras are rolling, a man matching that exact description walks into the background of the shot. He's strolling down the street with his hands in his pocket when he catches Adam's eye and the reporter is stunned. He tells the camera operator to zoom in on the man. All the while he keeps talking. Adams says, quote, wouldn't it be crazy if we actually found the guy right now? At the same time, other crew members alert the police who arrive in the area about 10 minutes later. Pretty soon they locate the man and they arrest him. It turns out Adams did find the guy he's identified as 32 year old Richard Applequist. At the time of his arrest, Applequist isn't carrying a firearm, but it does seem like they're concerned about his mental state because immediately after his arrest, Applequist is taken to the hospital for evaluation. After that, he's booked and charged. Applequist is currently being held in the Clear Creek County Jail pending charges including two counts of first degree burglary, one count of third degree burglary, and theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, impersonating a peace officer, eluding, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. On top of that, Applequist has also become a person of interest in other burglaries in Idaho Springs from the past several weeks. Police have said it's an ongoing investigation and ask that anyone with information or surveillance footage to email Crime Underscore tips at clearcreek Sheriff Us.
