Everyone knows just about everyone here, but no one appears to have known Daniel Callahan. Callahan is accused of killing Callie Burnett in Louisiana and abducting her two children. Authorities say he killed Brunette's 3 year old daughter in Mississippi while on the run.
The crimes happened in June of 2024. Callahan pleaded guilty to one count of capital murder, two counts of sexual battery, and two counts of kidnapping.

Before I get into our main cases today, I want to bring attention to another case I saw on the news. It's a Tennessee murder case that's gripped the state for more than two years and it is finally heading towards trial. 22 year old Maya Fuller was found shot to death in 2022. Police believe she was lured to a party, abducted and then taken to a remote area in Wilson county to be murdered. The mom of the suspect said that things started when Tiana Tipton said someone tried to kidnap her at a party, although investigators have since reviewed security footage from that night and didn't see any evidence of that. Tipton's brother Tyshawn Bowles, went on Instagram and found Maya's profile and said she was the one responsible for the attempted kidnapping. He then helped lure Maya to a club through social media messages. Maya was then seen leaving the club and walking to the parking lot with Tyyanna where she was jumped by her and another woman, Lamyra Pipkins. The woman eventually forced Maya into a car trunk and and drove her to the spot where she was later found shot seven times. Two suspects have already pleaded guilty. Tipton was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year and in mid October Bowles took a 12 year plea deal for his role in helping plan the abduction. The third person charged, Lemyra Pipkins, is still awaiting trial and that trial is officially set for this month. On October 5, 2025, 20 year old Nicholas Yates reported his mother Cheryl missing. But as police tried to piece together Nick's story, the details quickly unraveled and detectives found themselves standing over a pile of charred human remains in Nick's backyard. The remains have yet to be positively identified, but authorities believe they belonged to CHERYL and on October 7th, Nick was charged with her murder. The case is still unfolding, but Cheryl's friends and colleagues are left heartbroken from the sudden and tragic news. So who was Sheryl before her son claimed she disappeared without a trace? Cheryl lives in the town of Clinton, Indiana. Clinton is a Very small town with a population of about 5,000 people and the streets are lined with local parks, shops and town history. Cheryl loves spending time outdoors or going to church with her friends, many of whom she met in college and has remained close with for over 40 years. While she cherishes her oldest relationships, she also loves new adventures, traveling and going to concerts. Cheryl also loves DIY projects and building things with her own hands. She even built a fence out of reclaimed doors and a she shed fitted with a table and chairs so she could entertain guests. But in the fall of 2025, all of that came to an abrupt end. On Sunday, October 5, Cheryl's son, 20 year old Nicholas Yates, reports his mother missing. At 5:36pm that day, the Vermillion County Sheriff's Department sends Deputy John Hawkins to the home in Clinton, Indiana where Nick and Cheryl live. Once he's there, Deputy Hawkins asks Nick what exactly is going on and Nick tells him that he hasn't seen his mother since Friday, October 3, which was two days prior. He says he tried to call his mother multiple times but that he couldn't get through. And then he started receiving error messages whenever he tried to reach out, which really worried him, so he decided to call the police. Nick then tells Deputy Hawkins that Cheryl took all of her clothing with her, along with her ID and bank cards, but that she left her wallet, purse and phone. Right away, the deputy notices something odd in Nick's story. Why would Nick call his mother's phone if he already knew she had left it at home? Nick explains that she got a new phone but kept the old number. So Hawkins asks to see the old phone, but Nick says he already sold it because he needed the money. To Hawkins, things already aren't adding up, but he wants to cover all of his bases before jumping to conclusions. So he asks Nick if he knows anyone who might want to hurt his mother and Nick replies, quote, no, she was the sweetest person. The fact that Nick used the past tense, she was set off alarm bells immediately for Hawkins. At this point, her son is just saying she's missing. Using the past tense would point to the fact that Nick either knows or believes that his mom is already dead. Still, he wants to do his due diligence before accusing Nick of anything. Cheryl is a contractor for the pharmaceutical company Ellie Lilly. So he reaches out to Cheryl's work supervisor to try and establish a more exact timeline of her disappearance. Her supervisor tells the police that Cheryl was at work the previous Friday, but she made an odd comment while she was there. She Was mad at Nick for wasting all of his money and forcing her to pay his bills and said she was going to kill him. But no one actually believes Sheryl meant this literally. She was just a mom frustrated with her son's lack of self sufficiency. Plus, she's the one who's missing, not Nick. Cheryl's supervisor gives police another nugget of important information. Nick had a doctor's appointment on Friday, so Cheryl left around 2:30pm to take him there. And she definitely had her phone with her when she left. The officers find it odd that Nick didn't mention his appointment, so they go back to the house to search for more clues. One of the first things they find is Cheryl's pill planner. And it looks as though she had taken her medications up until the evening of October 3rd. But then they make an even stranger discovery. Two of Nick's friends have already moved into Cheryl's bedroom. Nick only reported his mother missing within the last day or so. It usually takes more time than that to make living arrangements, let alone move belongings. So the officers ask Nick how his friends managed to move in so quickly. He claims that he asked them them to move in because he was scared of being alone. Once again, the officers aren't satisfied with this answer. So they keep moving through the home, looking for anything else that could point them in Cheryl's direction. The officers head out to the backyard, where they notice a smoldering fire pit. And as they get closer, they see a stack of papers burning inside. They sweep the papers to the side and uncover bones and what looks like a human spinal cord. Officers immediately arrest Nick and read him his rights. Once they bring him into the station, Nick's story spirals out of control. He shows them an app that shows his mom's last recorded location as being at a bingo hall on October 3rd. But they're not buying it. Detectives have already confirmed that Cheryl was at work on October 3rd and that she planned to take Nick to an appointment after that. So they press him further, and Nick cracks under the pressure. He admits that he was the one at the bingo hall using his mom's phone. He says he was there with friends, and afterward he went to a nearby Kroger grocery store and sold the phone at the kiosk. Apparently, the friends he was with are the same ones who are now living in Cheryl's bedroom. But when detectives speak with them, they completely contradict Nick's story. They not only deny going to Kroger, they say Nick spent all day in the attic. On Friday, the 3rd and never went to the doctor's appointment. They also say spent the rest of the weekend obsessively cleaning the house and even went so far as to wash his mother's bedsheets. The friend said that they did go to several other stores and restaurants with Nick over the weekend though, and that he covered pretty much everything. Investigators are still left with the pressing question, how did they move in so quickly if Cheryl just went missing? That's when they say something that makes Nick look even more suspicious. Apparently he called them on September 30 to say his mom was moving out and invited them to move in, saying he needed their answer by October 3rd. Now it's looking like a cold, premeditated murder and after hours of questioning, he can't take it anymore. Nick finally confesses I've seen so many people on social media talking about how.

Today on October 6, 2025, Nicholas Yates finally tells police what really happened to his mother, Cheryl. He says that on October 3rd he and Cheryl got into an argument and she told him that either he had to move out or she was. This infuriated Nick since he was financially dependent on his mom, so he struck her in the throat and then choked her until her face turned blue. After realizing how blue she was, he says he let go, but Cheryl stumbled backwards, fell and hit her head on a metal bed frame and then hit it again on a wooden chest. After that she was unresponsive. Nick then placed her body in a wooden box and left her there overnight. The next day, he dragged the box out to the backyard fire pit and bought burned it. With this confession, Nick is charged with felony murder on October 7th. This means the murder was committed in the process of another felony, which in this case would likely be aggravated assault. Felony murder differs from first degree murder because premeditation or intent does not have to be proven. Nick pleads not guilty and he's currently being held at the Vermillion County Jail. He's set to appear again on January 7, 2026 for a pretrial conference and his jury trial is set for February. In the meantime, the coroner's office says that the process of identifying the remains may take several weeks, but investigators expect that they'll be confirmed as belonging to Cheryl Yates, especially with a confession on their hands. For now, the investigation remains ongoing, but as always, we'll be sure to bring you all of the major updates as they come in. Before we dive into our second case, I want to give a quick warning that this case involves extremely violent crimes against children, including murder. Since the case involves minors, the identity of the sole survivor and many details of the case have been protected. But this is what we know so far. In June 2024, the brunettes quiet, happy life turned into a walking nightmare when 35 year old Callie brunette was found dead in her own home. It was clear that Callie had been murdered. But that was only the beginning. Because her two young daughters, Jaylee and Aaron were nowhere to be found. Police quickly zeroed in on a suspect and a manhunt for Callie's ex boyfriend, 36 year old Daniel Wayne Callahan, ensued. Daniel has since been tried in both Mississippi and Louisiana and he'll be sentenced in a federal case in November 2025. His accomplice, 32 year old Victoria Cox, was in court most recently in October 2025. And not only did their crimes cross borders, they were sickening and left an innocent loving family completely torn apart before Daniel and Victoria committed these monstrous acts. And Cali Jo Brunette was a warm, loving presence for everyone who knew her. Callie was a true country girl who loved celebrating Old Farmer's Day in her hometown of Lorenger, Louisiana. Callie loved the simple things in life, but also worked hard for a promising future. After graduating high school, she enrolled at a nearby technical college where she studied both barbering and medical technology. Callie wanted to cover her bases career wise because she wasn't just doing it for herself. Callie had two young daughters, four year old Erin, Nicole Brunette, who is known for her silly sassy attitude, and her older sister, six year old Jaylee, who Erin always looked up to. The two girls are extremely close with each other and their mom, Callie. Callie and her mom also had a really close relationship and that close bond was the reason her mom knew something was wrong on June 11, 2024. She hadn't heard from Callie in a while, which was totally out of character. So around 8am on Thursday, June 13, 2024, she and Callie's dad drove to her house in Loringer, Louisiana, which is about 70 miles outside of New Orleans. When they get there, they Notice that Callie's 2012 Chrysler is missing from its usual parking spot outside. Callie's parents carefully make their way inside the home and they are met with a horrifying sight. Callie is lying on the floor covered in blood. From there, even more panic sets in because Jaylee and Erin were nowhere to be found. Callie's parents quickly call 911 and officers spring into action. They believe that whoever killed Callie also kidnapped her daughters before fleeing in her car. So they send out a request for license plate data across the region and they get a hit on the Chrysler traveling north towards Jackson, Mississippi, about 150 miles from Loringer. This hit comes in right before authorities in Jackson receive reports of a suspicious man attempting to break into residences in the area. They identify that man as 36 year old Daniel Wayne Callahan, Callie's ex boyfriend, police were already on high alert. But now they're even more worried about the girls. Because Daniel has a violent record dating back to 2008 for a range of felonies, including burglary, theft, aggravated battery, and assault. They have no idea what he wants with Jaylee and Aaron, especially because he's not even their father. All they know is that they need to find him fast. The same day Callie's body is found, Daniel's sister Dixie contacts police and says she received messages from Daniel the day before. Daniel used Callie's Facebook account to contact Dixie and asked her to send him money and told her he had done something bad. Unfortunately, Dixie doesn't know where he is. So police continue to gather license plate data as well as video surveillance from a McDonald's in Jackson. In the footage, officers spot two children who resemble Jaylee and Aaron. Authorities compile enough data to narrow down Daniel's possible location, and they think he's in a house on a road called Bougier Drive in Jackson. While U.S. marshals gather alongside local police in the area and start trying to locate him, two witnesses approach them and say they recently heard two children screaming from the woods about 50 yards behind one of the houses. So the officers immediately head to that house, and the first thing they notice is that it's only partially finished and it doesn't seem like there are any permanent residents. When they speak to the neighbors, they learn that a small group of people tend to file in and out of the house, and each person only stays there for a short period of time before leaving again. Officers begin to wonder if the house is used for some sort of ongoing criminal activity. And when they start digging deeper, they realize just how sinister it might be.

On June 13, 2024, US Marshals and Police officers search a property in Jackson, Mississippi, hoping to find signs of Callie Brunette's missing young daughters, Jaylee and Erin. Authorities think the home might be used as a trap house. But when they go around to the backyard, they make a shocking discovery. There are empty animal cages just large enough for children to fit inside. Children like Jaylee and Erin. But they don't see either girl in the backyard. So they continue to head into the woods in the direction where neighbors said they'd heard the screams. And about 20 yards in, they spot Callie's car. They peer inside, but they don't see the girls or any items to hint at their whereabouts. So the officers keep walking. And after about 30 yards, they spot a mattress on the ground. They scan the area and don't see any other items nearby. So they grab the mattress and and move it to the side. But what they see next, they know they can never unsee. The mattress was covering a pit in the ground. And inside the pit, they spot 6 year old Jaylee staring back at them, terrified. Her little sister Erin is next to her, but the agents realize she's not alive. Wasting no time, they quickly pull Jaylee to safety and take her in for medical treatment, then secure the scene and recover Aaron's remains. As they're doing all of this, a man approaches them and shows them his id, which lists the house as his current address. He says he's been at the house for the last couple of days and that Daniel had also been there with Aaron and Jaylee. Authorities quickly track Daniel down about 10 miles away, and upon his arrest, he waives his Miranda rights before making a voluntary confession. He begins by telling investigators that he and Callie used to date on and off and that he had wanted to murder her for a while. So on June 12, he goes to her house and stabs her 30 times. He says she fights to defend herself, but he eventually overpowers her. Afterwards, he kidnaps the girls, puts them in Callie's car, and drives to Mississippi. Then he backtracks to Louisiana, where he picks up 32 year old Victoria Cox, who he's currently dating. Then he drives all four of them to the Bougier Drive residence. When they get there, Jaylee and Aaron are crying, saying they don't want to stay with him. But their pleas mean nothing to him because Daniel and Victoria have absolutely evil intentions for what they're going to do next. Throughout the night, they take turns sexually assaulting 6 year old Jaylee. The next day, when Erin is crying for her mother, Daniel suffocates her to death. Finally, he admits to keeping Jaylee alive to be a sex slave. Authorities are stunned and horrified. However, they waste no time tracking down Victoria and arresting her. Once in custody, she provides a statement that corroborates everything Daniel has said. With both suspects confessions in hand, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade now believes that the area on Bougier Drive may have been used for child trafficking, considering the cages that were found on the premises. For now, Daniel is charged in both Louisiana and Mississippi, and he's also received federal charges. In Louisiana, he's charged with two counts of first degree murder. In Mississippi, he's charged with one count of capital murder, two counts of sexual battery, and two counts of kidnapping. And finally, his federal charges include kidnapping resulting in death and transportation of a minor with the intent to engage in sexual activity. Daniel agrees to a plea deal, which the brunette family requested as a way to keep Jaylee off the stand and hopefully prevent further trauma. He pleads guilty to all charges in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. In September 2025, he's sentenced in Louisiana to life without parole. Then he receives the same sentence plus 30 years in Mississippi. During that hearing, Judge Deborah Gibbs calls his crimes the most horrific she's seen since taking the bench. Finally, Daniel's federal sentencing is scheduled for November 19, 2025. Meanwhile, Victoria Cox has only been charged in Mississippi with since that's the only state where she committed the crimes. Her charges also include capital murder, kidnapping and sexual battery. On October 13, 2025, she pleads not guilty. Now, she's been offered a plea deal, but the details surrounding it are unknown. Her attorney has said they're still reviewing the terms and discussing their options. If Victoria doesn't accept the plea deal, her trial will begin in Jackson, Mississippi on December 8, 2025. If she's found guilty, she'll most likely be spending the rest of her life in prison. As for Jaylee, she is now in the care of her loving grandparents. Hopefully, the final outcomes of this case will help bring their family closure and allow them to heal. What did you think of today's cases? Drop your thoughts and theories in the comments.
