Our first story today is one that's been unfolding for over two years. On June 18, 2023, 38 year old Amber Spradlin was found murdered inside a friend's home after a night out drinking. Investigators collected a mountain of evidence at the scene and pretty quickly it started to look like there might have been a cover up. After waiting for more than a year for DNA results to come back, three men were finally arrested in connection with amber's death on July 30, 2024. Now their defense attorneys and prosecutors are locked in a battle over whether to keep testing more evidence or move forward to trial. But before we get into all of that, let's start by getting to know Amber. Amber Nicole Spradlin was born in 1984 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, a small town of less than 4,000 people. From a young age, she was known for being hard working and selfless. Her grandparents raised her after her mother was murdered and later in life, Amber returned that love by becoming their caregiver as they grew older. She also had a huge heart for animals, especially her two cats, Sadie and Twinkles, and she was a regular churchgoer. Her faith helped her through a lot, including the loss of both of her grandparents when she was in her mid-30s. After that, Amber started building a life for herself. She bought her first home, got a job as a hostess at the Brick House restaurant in Presenberg, and started meeting new people in a small town like Prestonsburg, especially working in hospitality. It didn't take long for Amber to make friends who shared her love for going out, having a drink and just enjoying life. And on Saturday, June 17, 2023, that's exactly what she had planned. Amber worked that evening and after her shift ended, she called up her friend, 53 year old Roy Kidd to go out for drinks at a local spot called the Season's Inn. She picked up Roy and when they got there, they ran into a few familiar faces. 55 year old Michael McKinney, his 23 year old son, MK 23 year old Josh Mullins, and Josh's girlfriend Lauren Carlson. They all hung out, talked and drank well after closing time since they knew the staff. Now a Quick note here. We don't know exactly where mk, Josh or Lauren worked, but Michael was a local dentist who seemed to be doing pretty well for himself. He even let his son and Josh live with him. And he was known for throwing late night get togethers at his house. That's where the group decided to head next. Before leaving, MK's mom stopped by the Seasons to drop off his OCD medication, which he'd actually been talking about earlier that night with Roy. MK pocketed the meds, said goodbye to his mom, and everyone piled into Michael's car to head to his place. When they got there, they all went down to the basement where Michael had a full bar set up. And they kept drinking a lot, which probably explains some of the gaps in the story that would come later on. Around 5:20 in the morning, Roy was so drunk he fell and hurt himself. He brushed it off and went to sleep around 6am in one of the bunk beds in MK's room. Amber stayed in the basement with the others and kept hanging out until about 7am and that's when Josh went to bed in his room, which was also in the basement. About an hour and a Half later, around 8:30, MK left the house. By 10:00am, he was at his girlfriend's place in Moorhead, about 70 miles away. Around the same time, Roy woke up, he got out of bed and went into the room where they had all been hanging the night before. And that's when he saw Amber sitting on the couch. He could only see the back of her head, but it looked like she was sitting upright, kind of like she was asleep. When Roy walked around to the front, he realized something was wrong. Amber's head was slumped forward and even though there weren't any obvious injuries, there was dried blood on her face, her shirt and the couch. Roy worked in the medical field, and from what he saw, he thought maybe she had a stroke or brain bleed. He tried calling her name softly, then louder, but she didn't respond. Panicking, Roy ran to Michael's bedroom and started pounding on it. When Michael opened the door, Roy told him something was wrong with Amber. Michael stepped out of his room, walked towards the couch and just looked at her. Then, without saying much, he pulled out his phone and called a friend, Prestonsburg City Police Officer Randy Woods. The two talked quietly for about 10 minutes before Michael hung up and called 91 1. At 10.30am, Michael told the dispatcher something shocking. He said that Amber had been murdered and that her throat was slit. This episode is brought to you by.

On the morning of June 18, 2023, Roy Kidd woke up to find Amber Spradlin unresponsive on Michael McKinney's couch. The night before, Amber and Roy had been out drinking with Michael, his son mk, his friend Josh, and Josh's girlfriend. At first, Roy thought Amber might have suffered a stroke in her sleep. But When Michael called 91 1, he told the dispatcher that Amber had been murdered and her throat had been Slit. After calling 91 1, Michael paced around waiting for first responders who arrived, and soon medics and the Kentucky State Police showed up. The dispatcher must not have told them what Michael said, because everyone assumed Amber had died from a medical cause, maybe a hemorrhage. The way her head was positioned, it was impossible to see the wound on her neck. It wasn't until the coroner examined the body at their office that they realized her throat had been slit, and that made Michael's behavior at the scene stand out even more. It was strange that he knew Amber had been murdered when nobody else did. Officers also noticed how calm Michael was. His demeanor didn't match the situation at all. And as investigators started looking around the home, they began to form a theory about why. For one, it seemed like Amber hadn't been attacked while she was sitting on the couch. There was blood found in the kitchen sink and in the laundry room, suggesting not only that she had been attacked elsewhere, but that someone had tried to clean it up. Both areas showed clear signs that someone had attempted to wipe away blood from there. Police also found spots of blood on Michael's bedroom door, in drains throughout the house, and in several places in the basement. Later, they learned that there was usually a camera in the basement that pointed directly at the couch where Amber was found. But when investigators got there, it was missing. Their suspicions grew even stronger once the medical examiner's report came back. Amber had suffered 12 stab wounds and a part of the knife blade was still lodged in her neck. From there, authorities launched a full scale murder investigation. That investigation is still ongoing to this day, and most of the details haven't been released publicly. What we do know is that police interviewed several people in the community, executed search warrants on homes and devices, and collected DNA samples from everyone who had been at the house that night. But the case hit a major slowdown because of a massive lab backlog, meaning it would take over a year for results to come back. By the summer of 2024, though, testing on blood and hair samples finally led to three arrests. On July 30, 2024, Michael McKinney, MK and Josh Mullins were all charged in connection with Amber's murder. Michael and Josh were each charged with seven counts of evidence tampering, While MK faced the same plus one count of murder. Based on those charges, it appears investigators believe MK killed Amber and that Michael and Josh helped cover it up. But personally, it seems like in a case like this, there may be something more going on. Because usually in a cover up, something happened by accident. But stabbing someone 12 times and slitting their throat doesn't sound like an accident. All three men pleaded not guilty. Michael was released on a $250,000 bond, Josh on a reduced $50,000 bond, and MK remained in custody on a $5 million bond. At the same time, there's still a huge amount of DNA evidence left to process. On October 20, 2025, the prosecutors filed a motion asking the judge to delay the murder trial so the lab could finish testing everything. That motion was approved on November 8th. Now Amber's loved ones and the public are waiting for a trial date. Considering how much evidence still needs to be analyzed, it might be years before that day finally comes. When it does, hopefully the trial will reveal what exactly happened in that basement and why Amber was killed. No matter how long it takes, we'll keep following every major update as this case unfolds. For our second story, we're heading to Houston, where another innocent life was taken during what was supposed to be a fun night out. On the evening of April 19, 2023, 33 year old Joe McMullens was on a first date with Briana Iterino when he was struck by a speeding car, Joe was killed instantly, sent flying 30ft before the car crashed into a pole. I can't even imagine being on a date and witnessing that. That is terrifying. The driver, 34 year old Christina Chambers, was charged with manslaughter after police found her blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit. At her court hearings, Christina offered nothing but excuses. Eventually, a jury found her guilty and in October 2025 she was sentenced to 11 years and 14 days in prison, a number chosen to honor Joe, whose birthday was November 14th. Now Joe's family has also filed a civil suit against Christina, while focusing on remembering the kind of person Joe was. Joe was known for being brave, kind and compassionate. He cared deeply about social justice and Even while working two jobs, he still made time to enjoy life. In 2023, Joe was looking for love and he approached dating with optimism. Even when a date didn't turn into something serious, he stayed friends with the people he met. In mid April 2023, he met Brianna online. The two connected over their shared love of music and decided to go to karaoke for their first date. That night they met up at a spot called Avant Garden, a popular karaoke bar in Houston's Montrose neighborhood. They sang, laughed, and ended up staying until the bar closed around 2am still having fun, they decided to keep the date going and walked to a nearby donut shop called Voodoo Donuts, which was about a half a mile away. After grabbing something to eat, they began walking back to their cars and that's when they saw headlights speeding directly towards them.

Brianna immediately realized it couldn't make the turn, so she jumped out of the way just in time, feeling the car fly past her. But then she heard a crash. It happened so fast that she could barely even process it, and when she turned to look for Joe, he was gone. For a split second, she hoped that he had managed to jump clear, too, but he hadn't. The car had hit Joe, sending him flying 30ft before slamming into a pole. Brianna ran towards the sound and found Joe unresponsive on the ground. She called 911, and the dispatcher instructed her to perform CPR until help arrived. She tried, but she was in shock. A bystander saw what was happening and took over, but unfortunately, it was too late. Jo was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the people who rushed out to help was Alfred Ponce, who managed a nearby pool hall. He'd seen plenty of accidents on the same curve before, but never one this bad. The Porsche 911 Carrera's hood was completely smashed. Alfred opened the car door to check on the passengers. The driver and her two friends were injured, but alive. He could tell right away, though, that the driver was in serious legal trouble because the car reeked of alcohol. When police searched the car, they found small baggies of cocaine in the driver's purse. At the hospital, she was identified as Christina Chambers, a wealthy Houston housewife. Christina's blood alcohol level tested at 0.3014 times the legal limit, and that was taken an hour after the crash. I am so tired of people drinking and driving in this day and age because there's literally no excuse for it. There's never been an excuse for it. But in this day and age, when we have Ubers and tons of different rideshare services, no one should ever be driving because you are putting innocent lives at risk. And somehow the person who is drunk driving always seems to live while the innocent people die. In this case, investigators also obtained surveillance footage of the accident and interviewed Christina's friends, who confirmed they'd been out clubbing that night when they decided to go home. Christina insisted on driving because she wanted to show off her Porsche, which her husband had recently bought her. To police, it was clear that Christina had acted with extreme recklessness and she was charged with manslaughter. Christina appeared in Court on April 26 with a broken leg and arm. She pleaded not guilty and blamed the accident on poor road conditions, not her alcohol level. That was four times the legal limit. Her bond was set at $50,000, and she was prohibited from driving unless it was for work. A few days later, her husband filed for divorce. He was also named in a lawsuit related to the car's purchase, but claimed Christina had used joint funds without his consent. By the time Christina returned to court in October 2025, her former friend Sebastian Lopez, who had been in the car with her, testified that she had a serious drinking and drug problem. Desperate to defend herself, Christina claimed her high heels got stuck on the gas pedal and her lawyer blamed the road, calling it one of Houston's most dangerous curves. That may be true, but maybe just don't drink and drive and take it way too fast and you'd be fine. And like, I didn't buy it. The jury didn't buy it either. All they saw was someone doing everything possible to avoid taking responsibility. On October 23, 2025, Christina was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 11 years and 14 days in prison, a symbolic sentence to honor Joe's birthday on November 14th. Joe's family is still seeking justice. They filed a civil lawsuit against Christina for over $1 million. The case is still ongoing, with a hearing scheduled for April 2026. For now, we hope that Joe's family, as well as Brianna, who witnessed this tragic accident, can begin to heal and that Christina has finally learned her lesson.
