Terms and conditions apply. From dwarven cherubs to crystal backrubs, there was a lot that happened on the latest episode of Goblin Mode. I'm Dan Casey and this is Sagas of Quests and Answers. Folks. We're gonna get into it in just one moment, but first let me reintroduce my amazing cast.
Danielle Radford
Danielle Radford, Amy Vorpahl, Jason Nguyen, and.
Dan Casey
Our special guest, Becca Scott. We're gonna get into this in one second, but as always, spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Goblin Mode. If you haven't watched or listened to it yet, please go back, do that, then come back here. I thank you in advance. And with that said, let's get into it. So this was a wild episode. Yeah, a lot of combat and a lot of lore condensed into a single episode for what was effectively we were in one room, but a lot.
Danielle Radford
Yes, I. That went by so freaking fast to me. Like, I mean, I don't know how y'all are feeling, but yeah, you're just doing. You're doing math. You're, like, running through combat, and then all of a sudden, Dan's guessing your very wish that you thought no one would know. Like, but then. But you remember that you dropped a seed ages ago, and then you're crying, so. Yeah. Yeah, there's some feelings happening for sure.
Dan Casey
Look, I came into this campaign with one Go make Amy cry.
Amy Vorpahl
We just went at it different ways.
Danielle Radford
No, that is, like, when. I mean, really, you hear me? Go. Wait, how do you know that? When did I. What happened? When I said that. And you know, you've all. I know that you got the hint. I guess I just want to hear from you, like, how are you piecing this together? Because I actually still am. Flummox.
Dan Casey
From my perspective, I did take kind of a swing in the dark. A lot of this has been about us seeking out the Sundari or their avatars or people that are connected to them. So this entity seemed very powerful, encased in this giant rare crystal, something that, to me, would be worth a fortune or you'd be very lucky to find it. Then your description to Danielle when busy entered the radiance of the cotton candy pink light was that she felt possibility, like, anything could happen. She felt fortuitous. And I was like, okay, this reminds. Like, I remember, I was, like, really excited when we did that pillar puzzle back in Erdkur Fathom because we learned these Sundari's names previously, we only knew a couple, and now we got to learn who they are and their appellations, like Arsenia, sovereign of grace. Tha, sovereign of valor. Or Denft, sovereign of healing. Sadif, sovereign of nature. Ariadne, sovereign of wisdom. And my favorite, because it bucks tradition, Wanderer's fortune. That to me, it sounds like I was like, I have to meet this person. And where better than this place that really, like, embodies the idea of fortune and prosperity in the wake of, as we learned last episode, what we called the Searing, this catastrophic, cataclysmic event they called the settling, because they got to settle in and really build their settlement here amidst all of this endless fortune, all these gems. So I just kind of took a shot in the dark and was hoping.
Amy Vorpahl
That I was right. So smart.
Jason Nguyen
So a lot of people joke that you can't win D and D, but you did. In fact, I think you just won two things.
Dan Casey
I solved one mystery, and I will now die next episode.
Danielle Radford
There was. I knew that maybe you might put two and two together that, oh, this is a tsundara like, what if this is a Sundara? And I was like, oh, that would be cool if they knew that. But to freaking nail it on the head with Becca. There's also like extra lore that there are five that are really well known and then there's this random six that kind of isn't really talked about. There also is only five articles, five magic items, basically, not a sixth one. And so for you to guess, Euthus, who is the kind of red headed stepchild, is really freaking cool.
Becca Scott
Yeah, well done.
Danielle Radford
Yeah, well done.
Amy Vorpahl
Very well done.
Jason Nguyen
Anyway, and I'm so glad that the settling, obviously the dwarven word for the series that was not Becca, just forgetting the word became canon and helped you on your path.
Dan Casey
But I like that because, like, it was organic and it's just like, okay, actually this is kind of a cool way to look at what potentially for the rest of the world, if it's this, like, isolationist colony, what they could potentially do. Like, oh, for us, it was like, we just settled in, we just hunkered. We formed our settlement here and now we're like this major trade hub. So, yeah, I'm excited to see where this leads. I admit I'm a little disappointed that we didn't get to see where Tippy's plan led.
Amy Vorpahl
Okay. It just goes to show difference in play styles.
Jason Nguyen
What was Tippy's plan?
Amy Vorpahl
What was Tippy's plan? Well, listen, Tippi's plan, not understanding that there might be something very precious and important to the story and to the realm in general inside, was to catapult a stick of dynamite right into the middle and just pray that that worked. Because to me, I was like, well, there's like, you know, my mind didn't immediately go to like, oh, this is something good inside. Until the pink stuff started happening in my mind. I was like, well, when I looked at it with a scope, it was like, okay, it speaks abyssal, which usually isn't a good. That means demon stuff. And then it's glowing red and then there's these weird flesh imp demons all over it.
Dan Casey
It was a good context.
Amy Vorpahl
I was like, well, I'm just gonna blow the whole damn thing up. I mean, that feels like it'll work.
Dan Casey
My hope was that it would have just blown Euthus out of her painite crystal prison. But who knows? Maybe you would just set the record straight and people would go back to think there's only five Sundari.
Amy Vorpahl
No, imagine the scene where we're just standing over Euth Corpse being like Wanderer's Fortune.
Dan Casey
Yeah.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. I'm gonna need a week to clean up.
Dan Casey
That's when you make a decision. You're playing a video game, then all of a sudden it says, quest failed, and you're like, what did I just do that caused this?
Danielle Radford
Yes. Yes.
Amy Vorpahl
So I love that you gave me the Sanctuary exfoliation because.
Jason Nguyen
Thank you for volunteering.
Amy Vorpahl
Yeah. It would have been way worse had.
Danielle Radford
I not had the sanctuary. Yeah.
Dan Casey
It's been extremely dead.
Becca Scott
The only thing stopping you from completely wrecking this entire. And the tsundari is the fact that if you did, you would no longer be protected.
Amy Vorpahl
True, true, true, true.
Jason Nguyen
An important thing to bring up is Pocari's jealousy, since we're talking about exfoliation.
Amy Vorpahl
Yeah. Listen, it wasn't that deep, Pokara.
Danielle Radford
So, you know, it's just a little. You definitely clocked. It's hard to not clock a big old dwarf rubbing a gem all over your exposed flesh.
Amy Vorpahl
But just think about how unsexy Tippi would have made it. You know what I mean? It's like Jem, he's wincing.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. Unsexy. Probably ticklish.
Amy Vorpahl
Ticklish. Tears in his eyes for no reason.
Danielle Radford
Just dense. But you don't know if a car is attracted.
Amy Vorpahl
True.
Danielle Radford
Like, a car is discomfort.
Amy Vorpahl
Listen, not gonna yuck or yum. Okay.
Danielle Radford
I do love, too, that. Well, busy. Got the first look at the little light, the little shining light that flowed out and arguably was going to help. And you had that amazing move to communicate with the being inside and draw that connection.
Becca Scott
Yeah, because I don't have anything else that's useful in this moment. There's nothing I can't. I can do a sneak attack with a dart on a swarm of animals looking at all of my spells. There's really nothing else that I can. You know, I tried to distract them. They are drawn to the magic and to the feeling. They weren't drawn by anything visual or anything like that. So it really was. I would love to take the credit and be like, oh, it's because I'm, like, super smart and empathetic. There was nothing else for me to do.
Danielle Radford
I love that.
Jason Nguyen
That's where creative moves come from.
Danielle Radford
Yeah, exactly.
Becca Scott
That was my only move. And so those were my two. It was like, get that. See if I can talk to the gem. Or, you know, as we now know, but as we thought at the time, just the center of the chaos. And then tried, dear God, not to lose Tippi again.
Danielle Radford
Yeah, he did take. I mean, you still took, I think, the most damage. And it was all friendly. Fire man.
Amy Vorpahl
It was all from my homies. Yes.
Danielle Radford
Yeah.
Becca Scott
Me and you battled for who, Tika? Because I took at the. When I healed myself, I was at half damage.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. For some reason, that's like the only. Yeah, you. These things are so weak. It's just that there are a lot of them. But, yeah, they really. They got after you. But thank goodness you finally have a cleric in your group.
Dan Casey
Very useful.
Danielle Radford
Thank you.
Jason Nguyen
Look, I didn't actually do any healing yet, but I was about to.
Amy Vorpahl
Sanctuary is close. Sanctuary's close.
Dan Casey
Look, you didn't need to do healing because you were too busy kicking ass.
Danielle Radford
Yeah, yeah.
Jason Nguyen
Thank you for the really awesome spellbook. Oh, yeah. Well, you know, when you're making spirit guardians, you gotta really go from there.
Dan Casey
I had to doodle little dwarf baby little squeezies.
Danielle Radford
Squeezies, Squeezies.
Becca Scott
Oh, that's their version of uggies.
Danielle Radford
The babies do have.
Jason Nguyen
For sure.
Dan Casey
100%.
Danielle Radford
Oh, my God.
Dan Casey
Just little baby dudes.
Danielle Radford
Oh, y'all.
Amy Vorpahl
Is it so in your mind because you were so moved by Dan, you know, the Lord of Deduction over here.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. Lord of the Deduction.
Amy Vorpahl
Figuring out everything.
Danielle Radford
And a Lord of the Deduction to you. And the Lord of the Deduction.
Amy Vorpahl
And the Lord of Deduction. Yeah. And did you. Did you actually. You didn't expect us to know who that was?
Danielle Radford
No.
Jason Nguyen
Zero faith in you guys.
Danielle Radford
I will say got. Frieda is an NPC that I get to control that can. That could figure that out, that can reveal things. But no, it's not, because I thought you were dumb or couldn't figure it out. But no, I was unsmart when I was. No, it really was. I was like, I don't think I've given them enough. Like, planted enough seeds. I didn't even look. I didn't even think about it. I was like, there's no way that they're gonna know this. I didn't. If I did anything, I buried the lead, and maybe they would pick up that, you know, Asa. The Sundari. Maybe they would pick up that he's got the artifact from her, because there was a whole scene there. But yeah, Euthys was like a name on a bullet pointed list. And I was like, yeah, that's kind of it. So. No, absolutely not. Not in my wildest dreams. If you couldn't tell from my, like, facial expression. And then. And then, yeah, we're like on a show, but I'm like, whispering like, hey, how did you. How did you know this? Yeah. Is this the Character is this Amy?
Amy Vorpahl
I could not tell.
Dan Casey
I was like, you just had a really fascinating, enlightening conversation with Yunk Jagger before they left. Deep regional religion and theology.
Danielle Radford
Yeah, I mean, I want to talk more about the battle, but it's kind of like, how do you top. How do you top a player going so deep, taking great notes and getting something right that you were like, wait, what? Like, how We're. Like, we're coming to the end of this season, unfortunately. But it does feel like it just blew my mind that you. We're now. You and I, in that moment were speaking the same language and maybe had been all along, but yeah, it's pretty magical. Highly recommend that. I don't know how you do it.
Dan Casey
But, yeah, just take notes, kids. That's all you have to do.
Danielle Radford
You did tell me at the beginning of the game, you're like, I'm gonna take notes. And I was like, oh, well, you don't want to spend all your time. It's gonna be on camera. Maybe you don't have to spend all your time, like, writing stuff down or anything like that. And you're like, no, no, no. I think it's important. I've played in games before, and the person who does take the notes, like, really, really triumphs. And I was like, okay, okay. But I didn't. I couldn't have ever guessed that it was gonna end in a cry fest.
Dan Casey
My most recent campaign, that I played my home game, I took zero notes, and I always felt like an ass. It was an npc. We'd met a hundred times before, and I'm like, hey, it's Jeff, I guess.
Danielle Radford
Yeah, yeah.
Dan Casey
No, it was just. I always. It felt like it deflated some of the moments and deflated some of the potential for drama. And I didn't wanna do that here because I know how hard you've worked on this, and it makes me more invested too. And I'm like, well, okay, this is probably gonna be important. I like to write down the silly stuff as well. Cause it makes me laugh when I read my notes again. Like, all the goblin names.
Danielle Radford
Yes.
Dan Casey
Like, who wouldn't want to revisit Mudge a bumphrah, like, six months from now? But I also want to make sure I'm not forgetting the big, important stuff because it's been seeded since episode one. Literally, the very first conversation we overheard the yesterdusters talking about these relics. That spoiler became very important to our lives and the fate of the world. So I'm trying to be an active player and pay attention with this.
Danielle Radford
Well, hell yes. I don't know. I think I would give you inspiration, but I apparently don't use that mechanic, so.
Amy Vorpahl
Oh, we don't need it.
Dan Casey
It's more interesting. I don't need inspiration. Let the dice do the talking. I'm too blessed.
Amy Vorpahl
Yeah.
Dan Casey
Our decks are living with the placebo.
Jason Nguyen
To be fair, you can make up. I made up for all the times you didn't give inspiration by totally cheating on not holding concentration on the blood.
Danielle Radford
Concentration. Yes. Yes.
Dan Casey
Blessings work differently. You mentioned this is a place where we feel that swell of magic.
Danielle Radford
So I have to.
Jason Nguyen
Heart of the dwarven power.
Dan Casey
Yeah. You're so organized. You can concentrate on two things at once.
Becca Scott
Multitasking.
Jason Nguyen
Yeah. The opposite of Becca.
Danielle Radford
Yes. Yeah, go ahead.
Amy Vorpahl
I had a question. So, Becca, you play a lot of D and D. Is this a support character? The type of roles that you go for, or are you more like in the mix with stuff?
Jason Nguyen
Well, Amy made a big face and I don't know what that means.
Danielle Radford
Oh, I know. Not pure chaos. I think we already have a chaos agent. I'm not trying, I promise. No, I would. Sorry. That face was just because Becca's a shenanigans lady.
Amy Vorpahl
Okay. You're too connoisseur of the shenanigans.
Dan Casey
Yes.
Jason Nguyen
I come to it up. But because I was given a cleric, I was like, I will do. I will try and choose responsible spells instead of just throwing dynamite into the middle of a pile.
Amy Vorpahl
Okay.
Jason Nguyen
But that is my preferred place.
Amy Vorpahl
It's nice to know there's another like minded place here.
Dan Casey
I'm giving you this dynamite because it's what I want to do.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. That is when I was like, brigneus, what do you think she's like? Well, yeah, I think I'd be irresponsible not to have dynamite.
Jason Nguyen
Yes.
Dan Casey
And you should put it that Fisher.
Jason Nguyen
D and D is improv and saying no to someone's heart's desire. And that desire is dynamite.
Dan Casey
I just want a little dynamite as a treat.
Jason Nguyen
All the fun.
Amy Vorpahl
If you're gonna use it.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. Treat yourself.
Dan Casey
Don't worry, you'll remember it in like two encounters from now. And you'd be like, wait a minute. I know what I have.
Amy Vorpahl
We start the next session and I'm holding sizzling down.
Danielle Radford
Oh, my God.
Dan Casey
Gun. Tippy, you know what you have to do.
Danielle Radford
I do like all the justification. No, it's a bonus action. And it wasn't really my gun. It's my eldritch cannon.
Amy Vorpahl
I just needed you to know that the Sanctuary wasn't gonna. I wasn't gonna die again.
Dan Casey
Every episode, Amy dies a little inside, realizing what the artificer class kid is capable of.
Amy Vorpahl
It's true. I mean, it's my first time as artificer. And, yeah, they've got some traits.
Danielle Radford
Well, because you have. Rangers get familiars, and then they just get these familiars that kind of can fly and see things, or they can maybe attack a little. But it's like you get kind of two familiars. They each can attack and do damage on very. I think the homunculus acts independently of you.
Amy Vorpahl
I could cast my spells through it.
Danielle Radford
Yeah. And it's like, okay, okay, okay, okay. Like, when he first got these spells, he was saying, hey, I get this, I get this. And I. And my text back was like, what? No, no. Ha ha. No. What? What's happening now?
Jason Nguyen
I have to beat that.
Danielle Radford
Yes. Yes.
Dan Casey
We're gonna find out what other hijinks that Tippy and the rest of his artificer kit can get up to, and what we're going to learn about you, this and the other Tsundari. Podcast Summary: Quests N’ Answers | Inside Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode Ep. 17
Release Date: February 19, 2025
Hosts: Jason Nguyen, Danielle Radford, Dan Casey, Amy Vorpahl
Special Guest: Becca Scott
In Episode 17 of Quests N’ Answers, the hosts delve deep into the latest installment of Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode. Skipping the advertisements and introductory segments, the discussion kicks off with Danielle Radford reintroducing the stellar cast: Danielle Radford, Amy Vorpahl, Jason Nguyen, Dan Casey, and special guest Becca Scott.
Combat and Lore Highlights
Dan Casey initiates the conversation by highlighting the intense combat and rich lore packed into the recent episode:
"From dwarven cherubs to crystal backrubs, there was a lot that happened on the latest episode of Goblin Mode."
(Dan Casey, [01:26])
The episode was marked by fast-paced action, emotional revelations, and significant plot developments, all occurring within a confined setting that amplified the tension and engagement among the players.
Character Moments and Emotional Beats
Danielle Radford reflects on the emotional depth of the episode:
"You were just doing math, running through combat, and then all of a sudden, Dan's guessing your very wish that you thought no one would know... And then you're crying, so there's some feelings happening for sure."
(Danielle Radford, [02:23])
This blend of strategic gameplay with personal character arcs created a compelling narrative, culminating in poignant moments that resonated deeply with both players and listeners.
Dan's Deductive Genius
A standout moment was Dan Casey's insightful deduction regarding the Sundari avatars. Reflecting on his approach, Dan explains:
"I did take kind of a swing in the dark... this entity seemed very powerful, encased in this giant rare crystal... I just kind of took a shot in the dark and was hoping."
(Dan Casey, [03:02])
His ability to connect past lore with present scenarios showcased a deep understanding of the game's narrative structure.
Amy's Bold Decision
Amy Vorpahl's decision to destroy the crystal housing the necromancer was a pivotal moment. She explains her rationale:
"I was just gonna blow the whole damn thing up. I mean, that feels like it'll work."
(Amy Vorpahl, [06:32])
This bold move not only altered the course of the story but also highlighted her character's impulsive and decisive nature.
Becca's Empathetic Communication
Becca Scott's creative approach to interacting with the mysterious entity inside the crystal added layers to the narrative:
"See if I can talk to the gem... there was nothing else for me to do."
(Becca Scott, [09:20])
Her attempt to empathize and communicate showcased a different facet of gameplay, emphasizing role-playing over sheer combat.
Note-Taking and Player Investment
Danielle Radford commends Dan for his meticulous note-taking:
"You took the most damage... And it was all friendly fire."
(Danielle Radford, [10:09])
This practice not only kept the narrative coherent but also deepened the investment of the players in the unfolding story.
Balancing Roles and Abilities
The discussion also touched upon the balance of roles within the group:
"It's been extremely dead... The only thing stopping you from completely wrecking this entire [realm] is the fact that if you did, you would no longer be protected."
(Becca Scott, [08:17])
This highlights the delicate balance between destructive actions and their consequences, a recurring theme in their campaigns.
Future Challenges and Mysteries
Looking ahead, the hosts tease upcoming challenges and mysteries:
"We're gonna find out what other hijinks that Tippy and the rest of his artificer kit can get up to, and what we're going to learn about you, this and the other Tsundari."
(Dan Casey, [16:50])
The anticipation builds around the evolving dynamics of the group and the deeper exploration of the Sundari lore.
Character Development and Class Features
The conversation also delves into character development, particularly Amy's new artificer class:
"It's my first time as artificer... they've got some traits."
(Amy Vorpahl, [17:10])
This new class introduces fresh mechanics and storytelling possibilities, promising exciting developments in future episodes.
As the episode wraps up, the hosts express their enthusiasm for the direction of the campaign:
"I didn't wanna do that here because I know how hard you've worked on this, and it makes me more invested too."
(Dan Casey, [13:23])
Their collaborative spirit and dedication to crafting an engaging narrative ensure that Goblin Mode remains a captivating saga for both players and listeners alike.
