Modern ideas of law enforcement have a lot to do with the formation of the federal police system in the early 1900s. It should be obvious on the face of it that every time law enforcement gets more power, citizens lose more rights. Police in America used to look a lot like Barny Fife. These days many police departments look much closer to the military than they do Mayberry RFD.
