Today's episode is going to be focused on conversation behind the scenes. What's really happening at this big event of course with Godfather Max and the one and only Fairy Godmother of Bitcoin, Stacy Herbert. And I plan on bringing some very special guests on. Of course, like we had yesterday, we did a five hour extravaganza. Considering I'm in Bitcoin country, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to do what we're doing. That's why I did a five hour podcast yesterday versus, you know, a typical show and we're going to do the same today. We're probably going to go for a couple of hours, potentially three, I don't know. But I'm excited to be here. I'm on, I don't know, number three or four of the Coco Max. So yeah, I figure until some guests come and we have conversations. I'll tell you about my poker experience. I participated in the tournament. It started around 4pm yesterday. As soon as we finished the stream it was right behind us and it started out with over like a hundred people. It was pretty amazing. They had special tables that were done by the local casino branded for the Max and Stacy event by the Bitcoin Sports Network. And I don't know, I played for like four or five hours. It was pretty exhausting but at the same time a lot of fun. It started out with 10 tables. I got to the the third table. You know when people get wiped out, we combine tables. And I was proud of myself because I used my original buy in. I didn't re buy or buy extra chips which almost everyone did. But I ended up going all in. Pre flop the one that got me wrecked towards the end and I had pocket queens which is a damn good hand. And then someone had like an ace and say a 10 or and then an ACE and an 8. And then the flop came after four people went all in, me being one of them. And I documented it. We got a video of it, which I uploaded this morning when I woke up. If anyone cares to check it out, it is on the X account. BTC news alerts. But obviously the flop came and an ace completely wrecked me. And then I think another ace came out on the turn or the river, and then there were full houses and my pair of queens did not stand up, which, you know, got me knocked out of the tournament. And then we continue to hang out maybe a couple of more hours just having good conversations. I also did actually a interview on someone else's podcast yesterday, which is called Bitcoin Country. And every time I went all in, almost every time I doubled up up until the queens and that, you know, it's ironic, though, with the queens, I had the best chances of winning. But that's poker. Of course, it's not all skill. There's a Little luck involved. But if you want to see who won. I also reposted the gentleman who took home the $5,000 in Bitcoin and the gold bracelet as the number one champion. I don't know who won the golf tournament yet. They have some pretty cool prizes. Of course, I don't even know who won the. What is it called? The pickleball tournament yesterday, however, those were the three big events that were or tournaments, I should say, which took place. So my understanding on the Coco Max Max is there's supposed to be two shots of espresso. Also I have to share some insights because I got this the skinny. I went to La Cajita, which is Max. He's a partner in this beautiful restaurant with a French owner. They have like five star ratings according to Google. Some of the best food in El Zante and I had a Coco Max. They're completely different. This is the in bulk Coco Max because they're serving hundreds of them them, but this is like more like a slushy or icy. The other one was creamy. Completely different texture. It felt like an elegant, much different experience. The one I experienced today at La Kaita, the Max's restaurant. It's not the mass produced Coco Max. For example, they don't put any coffee beans in this one for whatever reason. I had one of the traditional real ones, coffee beans, crunchy, being a fire. So just a different recipe. So just wanted to share that. I'm a Coco Max connoisseur. Yeah. So I was about to do the live stream earlier today and then Max messaged me and he's like, do you want to go to Elzon or. He didn't ask. He's like, you need to go with Brandon to El Zante and capture us coming in on the chopper to get a Coco Max. So I had the pleasure of being chauffeured around by Stacy Herbert's personal bodyguard. I felt honored and it was a great experience. And I also got to meet some really cool people. They took us to the. What is it called? The Hodl Wave, which we went to a couple of days ago. Or sorry, yeah, Wave House. That's the proper name. Thank you. And we went to the beach where they landed, and we documented the entire experience of Jimmy Song and Max basically landing on the beach specifically to go get a Coco Max at this restaurant. And so that's where I was earlier. And that's why the stream is starting like five hours later than I initially planned. But totally worth it. So the work I do here in bitcoin country these days is I do host the bitcoin country podcast for Stacy and the bitcoin office. We also run weekly spaces on X and I co host those with Max and Stacy and rotating guests. So it started when I came down, right before bitcoin historico. I'd actually first moved to El Salvador August 2023. It was after the Silicon Valley bank run, where I had known theoretically, about the problems with the fiat system with fractional reserve banking. But when you see it happen with one of the biggest banks in one of the wealthiest parts of the entire world, with some of the wealthiest companies in the entire world, they think their money's in the bank in this fiat system, and it's just not. And we saw that all exposed. So I'd already been a bitcoiner for a few years. I'd heard about El Salvador making bitcoin legal tender in 2021. So 2023, I hear about the Silicon Valley bank run, and I was like, okay, we've got some momentum in El Salvador. Salvador. I need to go help build this. There are people there working their butts off, you know, doing the hard work to make the bitcoin economy a reality. And I just came down to help support. I lived here for eight months at first. So it's two months in bitcoin beach, then six months in bitcoin Berlin, the new circular economy project, up in the mountains. And I was one of the first internationals to go move there full time to support the new project. Just helping shine a light on all the great work is started by taking two Salvadoranos, Gerardo and Evelyn. Hardcore bitcoiners. Awesome people. And they just took the initiative. They saw. I love when people do that. Right now you can just do things. And they saw bitcoin beach, they're like, bitcoin is money. This is freedom. We need this in the Real world as Salvadorenos. They saw that, they wanted that for their people. They went out and made it happen. I moved there to support, lived there six months, co organized a conference. I'm kind of rambling, so feel free to cut me off.

So when I was first living here, I co organized this conference, economy of bitcoin in the new Berlin circular economy. It was right after the having party by the meme factory, the bitcoiners. They organized this event at the big biggest resort in el Salvador in April.

It's called Decameron. Yeah, the Royal Decameron. I believe it was a year and a half, almost two years ago now, but it's something like that. Beautiful, beautiful venue out in Sonsonate. Always time for a little selfie here. Yeah, it was an amazing lineup, extraordinary event. And right after that, we collaborated with bitcoin Beach. There was a festival there, and then we brought everybody up to Berlin. And that was kind of. I'd already been doing some spaces when I first Moved down. I worked in data analytics, but just was like, how can I help? And it turned out, you know, media, bitcoin, Twitter, I already had a couple thousand followers. And so I was like, that's where I can add the most value. Right away I started going on all these different spaces and just telling the world about El Salvador and bitcoin at every opportunity. It's contagious. Yeah. And so I actually had backing up a little bit. So I got into Bitcoin 2020 and coming from a Ron Paul, Austrian economics, American libertarian perspective. And so kind of my early entry into the bitcoin media world was actually getting a lot of bitcoin podcasters on some of the biggest libertarian podcasts. In particular Liberty Lockdown hosted by Clint Russell. And the day that I came came to el Salvador in August 2023, he happened to be on Tim Cast. It's one of the most popular political shows. He actually gave me a shout out by name. They were talking about, you know, this was the Biden administration. Things were looking pretty dark for freedom, also hostile to bitcoin. And so they were talking about, you know, like, if the United States somehow fell, it was no longer the land of the free.

And Clinton was like, well, my buddy, I know a lot of bitcoin people. My buddy Jethro just moved to El Salvador, Salvador. So that was super surreal. I post that clip on Twitter and, you know, bitcoin beach follows me. Stacy follows me. So that's kind of how my first touch with her, you know, Stacy, the fairy godmother, director of the bitcoin office. She is, you know, they were joking earlier. She is the dictator of bitcoin country.

So she is so remarkably impressive. Just so graceful and competent. And actually hearing her talk about Renaissance 2.0, the transformation here, and talking about, you know, know why Florence was the epicenter of the original Renaissance and why we're seeing those same qualities here built around sound money in this forward thinking, philosopher king vibe. You know, that just was all very attractive to me. So that was actually part of why, you know, I was thinking about coming down after the Silicon Valley bank run. But hearing Stacy talk about Renaissance 2.0 was what convinced me to actually pull the trigger, make the jump. So anyway, I've been rambling a lot.

All right, so I saw that there's a very ostentatious helicopter just parked out in front of where we're doing everything right. It's literally right next to where the conference is happening. And I came in, in the morning and I told Max and Stacey, you know, I've never been on a helicopter. And Max and Stacy's like telling me, you know, Max just slept for 12 hours. He's got a lot of energy, blah, blah, blah. And of course, Max is like, Yeah, I have 12 hours. You know what we should do? Wiz was very disappointed with the Coco Max yesterday. And we got it. We got. We gotta go to La Quaita to the get a real one. And it only takes seven minutes with the helicopter, so we should, we should all go. I was like, are you serious? So they, they're, you know, like, Chris is there and like, he's like, oh, but, you know, we, we need to do this. You need to be on stage. Like, why don't we. Why don't we do it over lunch? So like 1250, like, like right after. So Wiz is like the last guy before lunch and the first guy after lunch. So the three of us get into the helicopter and Wizard Wiz is the one that he's from when pool space. He's sponsoring the Coco Max Max booth where they're handing out the Coco Maxes. And it's a drink that Max invented that's like a fusion of they know.

So we're, we get off this helicopter at the four of us, us, the pilot and the three of us and, and we fly there and it's. You have to understand, it's like 45 minutes by car to get to El Zante. From where we are right now, it took seven minutes to get to El Zante via helicopter. And it's not even flying that fast, like maybe 80 miles per hour. But you're flying as the bird flies. Are you going direct? And if you know the geography of the area, which I got to see when I was up on the, on the helicopter, it's all hilly, right? So everything is like a switchback and winding through different mountains and stuff. That's what takes so long. So I'm like, oh my God, this is such a great business idea. Cuz this is like made for El Salvador and you're going to have a bunch of rich bitcoiners here at some point flying helicopters. Yeah, okay, cousin. And you literally saved like 30 minutes just going by helicopter.

You know, trying it as some point in your life, like going on a helicopter. This is totally not what I expected to be doing when I came.

How long ago did you first meet Max and Stacy and how did you guys become friends and connect? I would imagine the early OG days. Do you have a little story you can share about that?

I think it was February 2018 and it was Satoshi Roundtable and it's like this invite only conference and it was in Cabo or I forget it was one of those Mexico, Mexican resort places and, and they were there and we ended up hanging out like a lot of that week.

You have to have some tequila. So I'm like, all right, screw it. All right, let's, let's order some tequila. And James, who's sitting next to me, he goes, I'll go shot for shot with you.

And I say probably the stupidest thing I could say at that moment, which was, did you know that Persians used to debate at everything? Twice. Once while sober and once while drunk. And Max immediately taking it all. Then we have to have a debate, right? He catches it, like, immediately. He's like, we're going to put it up on Periscope. So he gets out his phone. I'm like, what are we going to debate? He's like, well, you and Amory are going to talk about bitcoin. Bitcoin cash. And of course I'm like, oh, that's not fair. I've had nine shots of tequila.

There you go. And the whole idea is power to the people. So when you actually custody bitcoin with us, you get a 4% yield, like a savings account on your bitcoin. So as opposed to keeping it in your exodus wallet or some other wallet, you. And by the way, you still hold the keys to your bitcoin.

How does that work? How are you able to do that? Like, what protects you guys from someone just disappearing with the private keys then? Like, how's that work?

So very much like traditional cd, what we have is two wallets. So first off, you open a normal savings account because when we bought the credit union, it was your traditional Credit union. So you go through the kyc, you open your savings account, you can put fiat dollars in. But then once you have your savings account, you get two wallets. One is called a hot wallet, one is called the vault. And a vault, okay, so you can move bitcoin directly into your hot wallet and you are the only one who holds the keys to it. So you can pay with it just like any other bitcoin wallet. You guys don't control it, we don't control it. But if you take the bitcoin and move it into the vault.

Now for the yield, I would say for the yield.

So you can do a check the six month for the three and a half percent or 12 months for the 4%.

What's the tip? Is it. Answer me this because right now a lot of bitcoin back loan companies, they offer a 12 month term. What would your terms be? And in the future could we ever expect five year terms or longer terms or is there a reason it's always 12 months? Is it due to the volatility? Do you have any insights behind that? Because all oftentimes people want to get a loan but they got to pay it back so quick. And obviously everyone would buy their dream home probably with a bitcoin backed loan if there was 30 years. But I know that probably is somewhere down the future. So I'm just curious, how does all that work?

Fabulous question, great question to ask. And absolutely. So we have, the structure that we have is when we custody bitcoin as deposits, we are allowed to give loans against those deposits. So, so we have three categories of loans. The first category is just your commercial loans. These are typically four to seven years. So these are, you know, we're going to go into the agro industry, for example. So cattle ranching farmers who have assets like your traditional loan, they'll come to us with assets like land and we know the asset value. And then we give a proportional share as a loan. We can give it in usdt, we can give it in bitcoin and we can do it in fiat. So these loans are going to be four to six years in duration. Commercial loans.

The second category is what I'll call the retail loans where it's more like a line of credit. So if you're depositing bitcoin, we will actually issue a credit card that you never have to sell your bitcoin, you're borrowing against, you're borrowing against it and you can spend money anywhere where Mastercard or Visa is accepted and it's a.

So Max and Stacy, when I started posting news in the. This space, you know, I didn't have any followers. I didn't have any connections. I didn't know anybody at all. And, and every now and then, you know, Max, out of nowhere would just retweet one of my. One of my news posts. And, you know, I would get a rush of engagement and some, and some followers as well. And I never forgot that, you know, because when you're starting out and you don't have anything, you don't have any contacts, you don't have an account of size, you just start starting to grow and someone supports you. Like, Max probably didn't even realize that he was helping. It's just. It's just what he does, you know, he'll see something interesting and he'll share it regardless. He doesn't play favorites like that. But that, that stayed with me and, and I've always had a really good relationship with them. And. And then I got to know Stacy as well. So when, when I first came to El Salvador, they were kind enough to take time out and have dinner with me.

And you know, like, at that stage, you know, like, I. The account was big, but nobody knew who I was. And so they had, you know, to take time out. And they were really busy then because they were. They were just starting out all of their work in El Salvador. And the early days were the most demanding for them because you know where to start. What. You've got a whole bunch of initiatives to establish. You don't really have a staff yet. You've got all these legislative changes coming in. And yeah, we had a really lovely dinner at a. At a nice restaurant. I won't say where it is, but we had a really lovely dinner there. And I. I got to see a different side of Max as well, which I think a lot of people don't appreciate.

Yeah. Tell us about the other side of Max that they may not have never seen.

Max is a really fascinating, serious, intellectual guy. And I think what a lot of people know make the mistake of doing is seeing the showman, the publicity, sort of generating showman side of him, which is, you know, he's. He's really out there, but strategically sort of from an analytical point of view, if you have a look at all the things that he has expressed really strong opinions on, he's typically been like 10 or 15 years before the rest of the world has caught up. And that's from bitcoin to all sorts of macro and geopolitical analysis as well. Sure, he may have been wrong once or twice, but we all get things wrong. But when he has been right, he has been monumentally right in a massive way. And so people don't. People sometimes underestimate his intellect because he's such a fantastic showman. And the other thing people don't see is that how much of a gentleman Max Kaiser is and how absolutely devoted he is to Stacy. And, you know, Stacy is his queen and he treats her like that as well. If you're ever in the same space as those two, it's really quite touching to see someone like Max and how he treats. Treats Stacey as his queen. And the flip side of that is how wonderfully supportive Stacey is of Max as well. From the very first days when they. They met, they fell in love in Nice, which is a city that's really close to my heart. And then they started working together and their collaboration was really like the yin and yang. And their skill sets really suit each other so much. And they have a fantastic understanding that I think as bitcoiners, we can aspire to such a solid understanding in our relationships as well. So like, the romance in their relationship is. Is something to behold when you see it and if you see it. So, you know, there's a lot of bullshit online about, you know, what it means to be masculine, what it means to be a leader, and, and I think, I think Max Dem demonstrates in a really gentlemanly and romantic way that how to actually go about being a man in a relationship. So.

For those that may not know Archie yet, everyone recognizes this. This account 1.8 million followers. And just as he was saying, Max took the time to start sharing him back in the day and didn't have to, but that's what Max does. This guy has shared my stuff back, you know, years ago as well. And you never had to. Often times in the bitcoin space, people don't like to uplift one another. It's very, very com. Especially in the crypto space especially. But bitcoiners, I think are built a little different than most of the crypto folks out there. What are you up to nowadays? What projects are you working on? Tell us more about what you've been up to.

Yeah, man. Well, we. I doxed so you can see me now in so. But for four and a half years I was anonymous. And you know, that was really an interesting experience for someone like me, who I'm really extroverted as a person. But within the beginning bitcoin space, like, I don't want to inject that kind of energy where I'm trying to become a, you know, a personality or something in the space. Like, I saw a lot of people in the last cycle develop their accounts and I think suddenly they thought that they were really important and self important and you can see that the way in which that changed their conduct. And I don't, I don't think that's really healthy for the space. I think this is something that's so much bigger than all of us and we ought to be really grateful that we have such a large mission to be a part of. And it's a wave that we should all be riding and we should be grateful that we are here at this point, because five years later and we don't get the same opportunities. Right. Ten years later and it's completely gone. Like, not in terms of the ability to. To invest in bitcoin, but the ability to shape it in the way that we've all been able to and actually just if not play a part in, experience it and witness it. It's a tremendous once in a millennial opportunity to witness this kind of monetary transformation. And we're all really lucky to be here. And I think there needs to be a kind of humility in the way that you present yourself. You know, I certainly have. There's a very vivacious and extroverted part of me, but that's not, that's not for the bitcoin space. I'm very humbled to have stumbled upon this opportunity by sheer chance. And I'm grateful that I was able to just pour my energy into a day and night for a couple of years to build this account. So. So, yeah, but in terms of what.

No, it's a. It's a guest driven one. So, like, you know, Joe Rogan's my, my podcasting inspiration. He's the guy that really, you know, I got into podcasting through just as a, as a listener and a watcher and, and I actually like his model of podcasting where he just long, format, relaxing and, you know, create a Platform for the guests to just feel comfortable enough to share what's on their mind. I really like that. I think it suits my personality a lot and I just want to follow my interests within the bitcoin space and hopefully bring some things that are sort of tangential to bitcoin, but also of deep interest to bitcoiners as well. I've already started doing that and I'm very happy with the reception. So far, I think we've hit a. We found. It took us six months, but we found the formula of, you know, presentation style, content, the type of guests, the sort of conversations that, you know, that I want to lead as well. So I think I'm finding I'm hitting my stride, but it's taken me six months to do that. Because, you know, as much as you think you know how to conduct the podcast, you don't know until you start. And then once you sort of go through that process of getting comfortable, you do need to be mindful of, okay, well, am I giving the audience what they're actually looking for? And I hope to bring a unique point of view to the conversation as well, so that I bring out different parts of the guests opinions rather than just we just repeat the same old shit in bitcoin.

Do you ever record live interviews or is it all recorded like in your studio and then edited? Or do people come to your studio or office? Or is it done remotely or is it all the above?

Yeah, so we. We have a studio in central London. And my absolute preference, I think the best conversations are in person, right? Yeah, yeah, they're absolutely the best. And then what I also did in the last six months was we went to three different conferences to talk to guests because just to get that in person and we could do it a lot cheaper. We could stay home, do it all on Zoom. And it seems like the audience doesn't really mind too much, but I feel like it loses something different when you.

I think it loses something. And whether or not it shows up in the views, I haven't really done the analysis. But it loses something for me. I don't feel like the fidelity is there in the conversation. So I have gone to a few conferences where we've set up in hotel rooms and people have been really generous with their time in coming to speak to us. And so that's what we prefer to do. And we have done quite a few remote interviews as well. And it works, you know, it works. And as long as we get that sort of ratio right, like 2 to 1. I think it works. People are quite forgiving as long as you bring them really interesting conversations. So next year, sorry, this year I do want to experiment with. So we do two long form interviews, but I want to see if I can experiment with a couple of additional formats that I add in there in addition to those interviews. So I don't know what that's going to look like, but I have some, some ideas I'd like to throw around.

Absolutely. Well, you're probably seeing Simon Dixon now pop up on a lot of podcasts. Well, we were the first ones to interview Simon Dixon in this round of sort of the cycle, and Simon was kind enough to come into the studio. And it's our highest performing podcast with almost 160,000 views. And no other podcast has come close to that, even though some of them are a lot bigger than us with Simon. So we asked the right questions, we had a really good conversation. And the reason why is like, Simon is the sort of guest who really turns me on. Like, he is a very well read person. He has lots of really well thought out opinions about different topics. But the really brilliant thing that he does is bring all of those bits of data into a narrative that perhaps not many people have considered. And we had a little bit of a to and throw and, you know, because he challenged some of the narratives that he put forward, I found challenging, not least because I hadn't quite thought about them yet. But when he was, when he was sharing them with me, as much as I understood his points of view and how he put those narratives together, I wasn't, I still wasn't convinced of it, but I was so grateful for him to come in and share that. That with us. Because the whole idea isn't to get people to come in and, you know, have a circle joke about the things we already agree on, but is to discover new thoughts and opinions and insights. And that's what I want to do with the podcast.
