Bretman Rock
The following podcast is a Dear Media production class is back in session. It is time for period one, I guess period one. English, as you guys probably already know. Cue the intro. Bratman to Earth. Earth to Bratman. Girl, you already know who it is. And we are back. Welcome to English class, everyone. I know you guys missed us already, but today, like I said, is gonna be the grand spelling bee. But before we get into it, we're gonna talk about ell.
Princess May
Oh, my God.
Bretman Rock
Do you remember ell?
Princess May
Yes. And you know what's so crazy? That I actually met saw Mrs. Candelo the other day. Well, this was like.
Bretman Rock
Well, do you want to tell them what Ella is first?
Princess May
Yeah. English language learner.
Bretman Rock
And we were ELs English learner students as well. Do you remember what you learned the most about ELL and why you loved it?
Princess May
Honestly, it was just, like, not feeling alone, and everybody there was starting, you know?
Bretman Rock
Yeah.
Princess May
And I didn't feel like I needed to be this somebody. Like, how I was like. That's why I was so sad graduating from that class, because I'm like, I don't want to. Because literally, I feel like everybody's going through the same thing as me, like, not. Not. Not being able to speak English and, like, how everybody was so, like, everybody there was speaking still, like, in our language, in our language tongue. So I'm like, I don't want to leave. But then, you know, my. Definitely.
Bretman Rock
If you guys don't know what ELL or ELS means, it's basically a program when you go to school and you're an immigrant student or just maybe a student that doesn't have English as your first language. It's a program that is offered to some schools. I don't want to say it's for all the schools. I'm not sure if you guys may have had it growing up here in Hawaii. When we signed up for school, they asked us if we wanted to be ELS students, and we. We obviously said yes. And it was such a great program for immigrant kids or English learning kids, because it made us feel less alone. The teachers would come kind of, like, sporadically, like, to work the week. It was never, like, scheduled. They would just come once a week and visit you in class and, like, maybe translate some things for you, help you read. And my favorite thing about it is that we had somewhere to go after school to go help with our homework.
Princess May
That was the number one.
Bretman Rock
Do you have any, like, fond memories of being an ELL student or els?
Princess May
No, not really, but I do. I do Remember, like, I did the program.
Bretman Rock
Yeah.
Princess May
And after school, and there was. And we were doing, like, a Mayday. It was like an after school program. And then we had a May Day, and we did the Filipino traditional dance, which was the.
Bretman Rock
Oh, my gosh.
Princess May
Yes, I did that. And I had. Yeah. And my partner, like, I was already in that class for, like, two years. And my partner, like, did not understood me at all. Like, but I was like, I feel you. It's okay. Like, you know, I just love being able to help, you know, the newer students.
Bretman Rock
So I would say, too, that was probably the most coolest thing about it because I picked up English really fast because I was so adamant of learning English. If you guys know the Ms. K. Lore of her bullying me about not knowing English, you would know that I literally learned English in a calendar year. So I graduated pretty early on. But what was really cool is that, like, a student can always graduate like, els, but you can never take ELS from the kid. And I felt like I became a tutor for a bunch of kids who were part of that program. And, like, Ms. Candela would come and be like, brett, this is Dale. Just to give a name, not a real person. This is Dale. He's from the Philippines. He speaks to Ilocano. If you could you please help him translate? Like, yeah, in class. And then just, like, being able to do that for other people was really so cool at such a young age. And I feel like. I just want to say, if you are an ELS student or ell, I know there's a little bit of shame in it because I remembered, like, when the teacher would come and, like, translate stuff for me, I almost, like, resented it. Like, I'm always like, girl, I know how to speak. And, like, the whole class kind of just, like, looks at you. Like, girl, you stupid. But I needed it. We needed it.
Princess May
Yeah, you know what? I. Because, like, everybody, like, had a sentence to read in a book. Yeah, girl, I'd be so scared when.
Bretman Rock
It'S my turn reading.
Princess May
Yeah, it would be so scared when it's my turn. I'm like, oh, my God. Wait, let me. Wait, can we start all over again?
Bretman Rock
I would literally sweat so much, like, knowing my turn is coming up. Or, like, I would know. I would calculate when what my sentence was, and I would just, like, practice it over and over and over again. Thankfully, our last name starts with an N, so, like, I wasn't until towards the end. But, girl, Popcorn. Reading as an immigrant kid was probably so traumatizing. Please let us Know if we're not the only ones, because I swear that was, like, first generation immigrant, like, anxiety for me. Honestly.
Princess May
Honestly, I'd be like, can I use the bathroom?
Bretman Rock
Speaking of bathroom, bitch. I was always like that. That kid that I feel like in intermediate. I was always that kid that was always bringing snacks and food to school, which segues us to these snacks and foods that we brought to school today. But it says, what are we drinking? What are you drinking?
Princess May
So we. I am drinking a refresher from Dunkin. It is the strawberry. Strawberry dragon fruit period lemonade.
Bretman Rock
I'm drinking the more girly pop version of that. I know this is pink and it's girly pop, but this is also a strawberry Dream refresher. It has strawberry dragon fruit water, oat milk, and it is a partnership with Sabrina Carpenter. This is my first time having it, and I'm obsessed.
Princess May
Yes. I had it earlier. I tried it. I tried yours.
Bretman Rock
You guys need to get the Dunkin Refresher Summer. It is Dunkin Refresher Summer, y'. All. I truly am obsessed with trying something new every time. I wanna go all out on the next couple episodes and try more of their stuff, because you can literally customize it to however you like, and the possibilities are endless. I wanna try. I'm not the biggest fan of, like, carbonation, but I really feel like this or that with, like, the sparkling water would hit.
Princess May
But honestly, this is hitting.
Bretman Rock
It's hitting.
Princess May
It's like. It's super, like, sour. But I like that this lemonade. But, like, I love.
Bretman Rock
Oh, the base for that is lemonade.
Princess May
Lemonade, yeah.
Bretman Rock
Period.
Princess May
It's definitely a refresher. I. I like this one.
Bretman Rock
Is that your favorite one so far.
Princess May
That you've tried from the. From the. The pineapple mango we had last week?
Bretman Rock
Yeah. I feel like Clay would love that.
Princess May
Oh, my God. Yes.
Bretman Rock
Cleo is like a color girl. She'll drink anything that's pink. But yeah, check out the Dunkin Refreshers. It's a Dunkin Refresher summer period. Wait, princess. So how do you feel that you and Macchiato are kind of like a cultural.
Princess May
She's my op.
Bretman Rock
She's your op?
Princess May
Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Like, you. You and macchiato became a cultural thing. Like, everyone knows that you till this day. Yeah, everyone still quotes Macchiato or Machito Makaido still to this day.
Princess May
Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Do you want to go explain that lore to anyone that maybe don't know what we're talking about?
Princess May
Well, you know, I was a ELS student, and that's that. But yeah, I just. I've never had a coffee before.
Bretman Rock
Wait, no, go back, Go back. So this video that. That clip is from a old video that we were doing?
Princess May
Yes.
Bretman Rock
And I believe we were, like, unboxing makeup.
Princess May
Yes, it was a foundation shade.
Bretman Rock
Okay.
Princess May
Yes, it was a foundation shade, and I was trying to read it, and I was a ELS student, like, you know, and I said, macchiato. Machito.
Bretman Rock
Machino.
Princess May
Machito.
Bretman Rock
What is a macchiato, princess?
Princess May
It's a type of coffee that you drink, period.
Bretman Rock
Queen. Queen. You are already in one. Halfway there to your redemption arc, girl. Have you had a macchiato since? Or are you, like, so traumatized that you're like, I don't want no macchiato. I don't even want to see no macchiato. When you see a macchiato in the menu, do you, like, like, shake and quiver?
Princess May
Yes. I'm like, oh, my God. This is so triggering. Like, everybody, there's. Okay, so there's this one TikTok, right? It was like a grandma or somebody's mom that was. She ordered her, like, a drink, and then she. The mom. The grandma or the mom was like, is this machito macato?
Bretman Rock
Oh, and it was a Filipino mom. Yes.
Princess May
And everybody was tagging me, and they're.
Bretman Rock
Like, that's you as fuck.
Princess May
Yeah. And I'm like, this is princess when she gets older. Like, that's crazy. But I was like, oh, my God. Why is he was so freaking.
Bretman Rock
I feel like whenever somebody says you're a dumb bitch, they're always talking about that specific video. Which leads me to today's main event. Today, Princess and I are going to be doing a spelling bee. And we have a judge, and she has a mic.
Ms. Kat
Hi.
Bretman Rock
We have Ms. Kat. I know y' all miss her, period. So Kat will be kind of like our judge. Slash. Well, judge, period. And we have asked each other for three words. So three words. Three words. And then three words from Kat as well. So there's possible six points each for both of us. So I'll give you three words. You give me three words, and then Kat will give us three words, and it's gonna be whoever spells it first.
Princess May
Okay.
Bretman Rock
That will get the point.
Princess May
Okay, got it.
Bretman Rock
So six possible points at most. Okay.
Princess May
Okay.
Bretman Rock
We're gonna start with the easy words first. And going up to this. Going up higher and higher, Higher. And just for the vibe of Ms. Duncan and these refresher drinks, we're going to be doing things you can find in a coffee menu or a Dunkin menu, Coffee related things, tea related things, refresher related things. Just for the fun of it. So, Princess, would you want to test me first or do you want to get tested first?
Princess May
You can test me first. I feel really confident.
Bretman Rock
Okay.
Princess May
And. Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Okay, Princess.
Princess May
Is there a timer on this?
Bretman Rock
Okay, first. First word. And princess. Needed. Well, I also needed a notebook. Let me get my school bag.
Princess May
Wow. Oh, my God.
Bretman Rock
Sorry. It's really deep in here.
Princess May
Wow.
Bretman Rock
Where's my notebook, my pen and my notebook? Sorry, guys. Where do I even put my bag down?
Princess May
Oh, my God.
Bretman Rock
Do I put her right here?
Princess May
Don't, because I'm going to steal it. But no.
Bretman Rock
I wish I could do high school again so I could have a Birkin bag. Imagine like, sorry, I'm late. And then pulling out my refresher. Sorry I'm late, Miss.
Princess May
I got you one, too.
Bretman Rock
No, literally, that's me. And like. Oh, my God. Sorry I'm late. I was like. I had to get in my refresher. Okay, so, Princess May, your first word, which is an easy word, is espresso.
Princess May
E, S, P, R, S, S, O.
Bretman Rock
Girl, again, you wrote it out and you said it wrong.
Princess May
E, E, S, P, R, E, S, S, O. I said that?
Bretman Rock
You said. You didn't say E. You just said espr. Sso.
Princess May
Oh, no, I think espresso. Yeah. ESP One point.
Bretman Rock
Okay, okay. Okay. One point for Princess.
Princess May
Yes, that's me.
Bretman Rock
And I will not be that easy on you again. So say what you're putting down.
Princess May
Okay, okay. Okay.
Bretman Rock
The next word is refresher.
Princess May
R, E, F, R, E, S, H, E, R. Period.
Bretman Rock
Okay.
Ms. Kat
Are you sure she's not looking at her cup?
Bretman Rock
Where is her cup? Does it say refresher?
Princess May
No. It doesn't?
Bretman Rock
No. If anything, it misspells it.
Princess May
Oh, period.
Bretman Rock
She's like, R.F. s, H, R. Okay, Princess, you know the last and final word? Princess, your word is macchiato with an extra shot of espresso. Refresher.
Princess May
M, A, C, C, H, I, A, T, O.
Bretman Rock
Is there double T on macchiato?
Princess May
No.
Ms. Kat
Period. Three for three.
Bretman Rock
Three for three. Okay. Princess May, I'm so proud of you.
Princess May
Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Queen. Okay, hit me with my three words.
Princess May
Okay. Cappuccino.
Bretman Rock
Cappuccino?
Princess May
Yes.
Bretman Rock
You're supposed to start with easy words first. Oh, that's a hard word.
Princess May
Okay. Affogato.
Bretman Rock
Okay. Wait. Can I borrow your pencil?
Princess May
Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Okay. I didn't do my research, so if I do this wrong.
Princess May
You got it.
Bretman Rock
Okay. A F, O, G, A, T, O.
Princess May
No.
Bretman Rock
Is it double T, no, aff.
Ms. Kat
Yeah.
Princess May
I definitely studied last night, you know.
Bretman Rock
Okay. I gave you a shot for the espresso. I just missed one app.
Princess May
No, I definitely said the E though. Okay, girl, I wasn't listening.
Bretman Rock
That's fine. Okay, period. Okay. Period. If anything, I am down to lose this game just for you to shine.
Princess May
Okay.
Bretman Rock
All right. I would never dampen your rating.
Princess May
All right. Okay, next.
Bretman Rock
I knew. The fact that I knew something was double anyways.
Princess May
Go Frappuccino.
Bretman Rock
Wait, these are hard. Princess. Okay, F, R, A, P, P, U, C, I, N, O.
Princess May
Would you like me to spell it for you?
Bretman Rock
Yes.
Princess May
Okay, let me write it down.
Bretman Rock
Wait. Oh, my God. Wait. I'm a dumb bitch.
Princess May
Yes, you are.
Bretman Rock
Wait, what did I make a mistake on?
Princess May
It's a double C. Can I. Oh, sorry.
Ms. Kat
It's a double C. Yeah, it's a double P and a double C.
Bretman Rock
That's crazy. Double what? P and a C. Okay, I'll give you that. Oh, my God. Me losing a spelling bee to Princess is not in my 2020 card. 2025.
Ms. Kat
You said English was your worse.
Bretman Rock
Well, yeah, well, this is the only subject you're beating me. I.
Princess May
Okay, whatever.
Bretman Rock
The fact that I keep. Okay, is it cappuccino?
Ms. Kat
Is that the last one, princess?
Bretman Rock
Because I feel like I would misspell that, honestly.
Princess May
Okay, fine. Yeah, cappuccino. I'm pretty sure you got to get this right.
Bretman Rock
Okay. I feel like if I'm taking. If I'm taking notes from my last word, I feel like it's C, A P, P, U, C, C, I, N, O, period.
Princess May
Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Oh, my God. Three to one is crazy.
Ms. Kat
Is it my turn?
Bretman Rock
Yes.
Princess May
Wait, I need.
Bretman Rock
I need a. Oh, I'll use my pen.
Ms. Kat
Yalls first word.
Bretman Rock
Pass me a pen. I feel like I can catch up. I can catch up.
Ms. Kat
Okay, so for something that else is on the menu, not cough related.
Bretman Rock
Okay. Herbal me mellit. Yeah. I don't need to write it down. Yeah, I'm raising my hand.
Princess May
First one to spell it.
Bretman Rock
No. Yes, it's first one to spell it. And I said me.
Ms. Kat
Oh, okay.
Bretman Rock
H E, R, B, A, L. Correct. Girl. The fact I don't gotta write that down.
Princess May
That doesn't count down.
Bretman Rock
I don't gotta write that down.
Princess May
It doesn't count.
Bretman Rock
You just raise your hand.
Princess May
I thought you felt.
Ms. Kat
Yeah, and whoever put, like, wrote it. I thought that you. Okay, so Brad has what? Two, two, three. Okay, next one.
Princess May
Wait, why we did we take one then?
Bretman Rock
Because just in case she says a word I can't spell in my Head.
Ms. Kat
Ristretto.
Princess May
Oh, you got that one.
Bretman Rock
What?
Ms. Kat
Ristretto. It's a short shot.
Bretman Rock
Ristretto.
Ms. Kat
Yeah.
Princess May
Ristretto.
Bretman Rock
Is that a verb, noun?
Ms. Kat
Oh, I don't know. It's a coffee term.
Princess May
It's a coffee.
Bretman Rock
Can you say it one more time?
Ms. Kat
Ristretto.
Princess May
Can you put in a sentence I would like dopio?
Ms. Kat
Ristretto. Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Can you say it in the accent where it comes from?
Ms. Kat
Italian? Yeah.
Princess May
Restretto.
Bretman Rock
Okay, Princess, I'mma let you. I'mma let you cook for this one. Go. Go first.
Princess May
Okay. I'm going to spell it how I hear it. R E.
Bretman Rock
Go.
Princess May
Nobody said go with you with your herbo. R E S T. R A T O. Rest.
Ms. Kat
Correct. Not correct.
Bretman Rock
Oh, my God. R E S T. R E, T O. No, it's R I. Ristretto.
Ms. Kat
Ristretto.
Princess May
Oh, it's R I, S T. Okay.
Bretman Rock
Okay.
Princess May
Okay. You really tried, like, coming for us.
Bretman Rock
Okay, so that doesn't count as a word for. For the three. So you have to give us two more words.
Ms. Kat
Okay.
Bretman Rock
Because none of us got the point.
Ms. Kat
Yeah.
Princess May
No, you.
Bretman Rock
Okay. Should we just go 00 for that?
Princess May
No. Okay, go.
Bretman Rock
We can Mocha.
Princess May
Oh, me.
Ms. Kat
I think Princess.
Bretman Rock
Okay, run the clip at the same time. Run the clip.
Princess May
C, H, A, O.
Ms. Kat
No, F, H, O. Bretton Bretman.
Bretman Rock
Oh, C H, A, O. Oh, you got me. I wasn't speaking over you. I wasn't speaking over you. No, no, it doesn't count. It's not O.
Princess May
It's not O. It's a.
Bretman Rock
It's an A. I know, but you said oh. Because you were saying oh. I wouldn't say moco. I literally just said oh. Because you said oh. I. You got me so fucked up. You got me so fucked up. Was I spelling over you? Spelling. I wasn't.
Princess May
No, you were complaining.
Bretman Rock
That O. C H, a. Mocha.
Ms. Kat
I think Brett got it. Is that three? Three.
Bretman Rock
I think it's three. Three. Okay. Not me actually Fucking sweating. Wait, I've never been this tied to Princess.
Ms. Kat
Okay, let's do a Duncan treat. Y' all ready? Okay, next word is culada.
Princess May
Huh?
Ms. Kat
It's one word.
Princess May
Culata?
Ms. Kat
Yeah, it's a drink.
Bretman Rock
Can you use it in a sentence?
Ms. Kat
May I please get a culata with extra chocolate colada? Yeah, it's a. It's a Dunkin signature drink, I think.
Bretman Rock
What are the ingredients in the colada?
Ms. Kat
Oh, let me check.
Bretman Rock
What kind of things are in there?
Ms. Kat
It's. You could get blue raspberry strawberry, vanilla. It's like a frozen drink. Me, Princess.
Princess May
C O, O, L, A, T, A.
Bretman Rock
Okay, say it one more time.
Ms. Kat
Culada. Culada. Culada.
Bretman Rock
Culada, Culada with it. Oh, like pina colada.
Ms. Kat
No, culata.
Bretman Rock
Okay. C O, O, L, A, T, T, A, period.
Princess May
Oh, it's a double T. Yeah, I think that's four.
Bretman Rock
Three.
Ms. Kat
Yeah, four, three. Get one more.
Bretman Rock
Should we run it back with the mocha? Because I really feel like the audience are gonna be, like, rich.
Princess May
You stuck it with the heart. Yeah, you did. Because you did.
Bretman Rock
Okay, give us the hardest word. So it's what, three? Three. Yeah. This is the winning word because I already know you are getting for princess.
Princess May
Yeah, they all. He always want to see me fail in life.
Bretman Rock
Okay, and I. I've been letting you spell things. How about you spell this one first?
Princess May
Okay, I've been spelling it.
Bretman Rock
And if you don't get this one right, period.
Princess May
Okay, go, Cat.
Ms. Kat
You guys did the pretty hard ones. I'm gonna do more confusing ones. So this is two words. It's kampana.
Bretman Rock
What?
Ms. Kat
Kanpana. It's a shot with whipped cream.
Bretman Rock
Campana.
Ms. Kat
Yeah. No, Kanpana.
Bretman Rock
Can you say it one more time, slowly?
Ms. Kat
May I please get a kanpana?
Bretman Rock
Kanpana.
Ms. Kat
Kanpana. Yeah.
Princess May
Is that a K or a C?
Ms. Kat
I can tell you.
Princess May
Oh.
Bretman Rock
I don't know. Con.
Princess May
Hey, Siri.
Bretman Rock
Kanpana. I've never gotten a compana before. Okay, Princess, I'll let you spell it first. Go.
Princess May
Raven's on his phone.
Bretman Rock
I'm literally checking the time.
Princess May
C, U, n, P, A, N, N, A.
Bretman Rock
Okay, I was close to that. Where? To how she spelled it. So I'm gonna just go C A, n, P, A, N, N, A.
Ms. Kat
Wrong.
Princess May
Wrong.
Ms. Kat
You guys got the second word right. The first word was wrong.
Princess May
Is it K?
Ms. Kat
No.
Princess May
Is it C? Yes, it's already.
Bretman Rock
We got that wrong.
Princess May
What was the right.
Bretman Rock
What was the right spelling? C O, N. Is it not what you said?
Ms. Kat
Yeah, she says C U or she.
Bretman Rock
Says C. Oh, C O, N. Yeah, you said you.
Ms. Kat
Yeah.
Bretman Rock
Okay.
Princess May
Oh, it's last word. Like C o, N. Yeah.
Ms. Kat
Spelled dopio.
Princess May
Huh?
Ms. Kat
A dopio shot.
Bretman Rock
Dopio shot. What is that?
Ms. Kat
Two shots?
Princess May
Is it dopio?
Ms. Kat
No, it's dopio.
Princess May
Dory.
Ms. Kat
Dope.
Princess May
What is it?
Ms. Kat
Dopio.
Bretman Rock
Okay, Right.
Ms. Kat
You want to go first?
Bretman Rock
No, I'll let Princess go first. Okay, I'll go first.
Ms. Kat
Hey, Brett.
Bretman Rock

Princess May
You go first.
Bretman Rock
Okay. D O U P, p I, O.
Ms. Kat
No go first.
Princess May
D, O, P, E. Yo, yo.
Ms. Kat
No dope.
Bretman Rock
That cannot be yours.
Princess May
One is wrong, too.
Bretman Rock
I know. I'm closer than you.
Princess May
Let me see how you spell it.
Ms. Kat
Yes.
Bretman Rock
Let's ask the audience.
Ms. Kat
D, O, P, P, I, O. Dopio.
Bretman Rock
Sorry, I thought was, like, double.
Princess May
