These are the daily tech headlines for Saturday, May 2, 2026. I'm Sarah Lane. Let's catch up on the News. CISA ordered US federal agencies to patch a critical and active cPanel and WHM vulnerability by May 3rd. The flaw is rated 9.8 and can give attackers full control over servers, including access to configurations, databases and hosted websites, with researchers warning it's been exploited since at least February. Hosting providers have taken emergency measures to limit exposure. The Pentagon has signed Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Web Services and Reflection AI to deploy AI tools on classified military networks, joining OpenAI, Google and Space X. The deals are meant to improve data analysis and battlefield decision making, though concerns remain around surveillance and autonomous weapons. Anthropic is still sidelined after disputes over permissible uses of its models. Metta acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a startup focused on AI models that help robots understand and adapt to human behavior. As part of a broader push into humanoid robotics, the company said the technology is designed for complex, dynamic environments, which points towards deeper investment in embodied AI beyond Meta's social and Metaverse efforts. No word on the financial details, though. Amazon launched an AI powered Join the Chat feature that lets shoppers ask questions on product pages and receive real time conversational audio responses generated from product details and customer reviews. This builds on Amazon's Hear the Highlights audio summaries meant to replicate an in store expert by adapting answers based on follow up questions. NASA is targeting a late 2027 launch for Artemis 3, with administrator Jared Isaacman telling Congress the mission will focus on a low earth orbit rendezvous and docking test between SpaceX and Blue Origin landers rather than a lunar landing. The shift reflects delays in SpaceX's Starship development, which hasn't demonstrated capabilities like orbital flight and in space refueling. NASA is accelerating hardware prep for the space launch system while pushing to shorten gaps between missions. But is a crude moon landing in 2028 possible time will tell. Apple appears to have discontinued the 256 gigabyte base configuration of the Mac Mini, raising the starting price to $799 for a model with 5, 512 gigabytes of storage and 16 gigs of RAM. The change comes amid supply constraints and a global memory shortage tied to AI infrastructure demand, which CEO Tim Cook said is driving higher costs and delays. A sustained DDoS attack took down Ubuntu and Canonical infrastructure for more than a day, disrupting websites, updates and and security communications. The outage coincided with the release of exploit code for a critical Linux vulnerability that can grant root access, limiting the ability to help users during an active threat. A pro Iranian group has claimed responsibility. Ongoing risks for DDOs for hire services point towards the broader impact on critical open source infrastructure. Aura is adding expanded hormonal health features to its Gen 3 and 4 smart rings, including updates to Cycle Insights that account for more than 20 types of birth control and track their effects on metrics like temperature, sleep and recovery. Menopause Insights monitors symptoms and provides personalized guidance. And there's also new access to telehealth provider 28 Health. The features roll out May 6. Globally, Waymo is clamping down on minors using its driverless cars, introducing in ride age verification checks after reports that parents were sending kids alone, even though company rules and legal restrictions do not allow that in California. The company says it uses interior cameras and may review footage to detect violations. We with penalties including account suspension, but says it does not use facial recognition. Waymo is still continuing limited teen programs in Phoenix, Arizona.
