Tick headlines for Tuesday, May 20, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Intel is considering selling its network and edge businesses to refocus on its core and PC data center chip markets. This potential move follows discussions with third parties and investment bankers, but no formal process has been started. The divestiture is driven by the businesses being perceived as non core, especially given Broadcom's networking presence. While partnership or stake sales were considered early stage discussions leave other options open. This follows Intel's recent sale of a majority stake in Altera for $4.46 billion as a part of a broader revival effort amid datacenter and PC market share challenges. Microsoft has open sourced its Windows subsystem for Linux after a multi year effort making the code available on GitHub for community contrib. This move along standing requests from developers allows them to participate in fixes and add new features, potentially improving WSL's performance and integration with Linux services. Initially launched nearly nine years ago for Windows 10, WSL has evolved significantly, including the separation of its code base from Windows and the eventual transition to a separate package in the latest Windows 11 update. Microsoft views this open sourcing as a major milestone towards making Windows a more developer friendly platform. A federal judge has demanded that Apple either approve Fortnite's return to the US App Store or provide a legal justification for its continued refusal. This demand follows a new motion from Epic Games and a previous ruling where Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers accused Apple of circumventing court orders and misleading the court. The judge expressed her frustration, stating Apple is capable of resolving this issue and suggesting potential contempt charges for non compliance. Apple had stated it would wait until the 9th Circuit ruling on its request for a partial stay of the injunction before acting or on Fortnite's resubmission. Despite the court's earlier decision that Apple was in willful violation of anti competitive pricing and commissions, a decision that should have allowed Fortnite's return, Apple has approved a new update for the Spotify iOS app, enabling US users to view audiobook pricing and make purchases directly within the app. This update also allows Spotify Premium users to buy additional audiobook listening hours beyond their included 15 hours per month. Spotify highlighted that this change resulting from the court decision reduces barriers for audiobook listeners and provides publishers and authors with seamless access to new audiences. Spotify believes this development helps to level the playing field by allowing all developers to offer pricing information and easy purchasing links for digital goods and services on iPhones without unnecessary steps for extra Apple Levy taxes. Google launched its Notebook LM applications for Android and iOS on Monday, ahead of its anticipated rollout schedule and the Google I O 2025 event. Previously exclusive to desktop users since its 2023 debut. This AI powered note taking and research offers mobile accessibility, allowing users to leverage features such as smart summaries and question and answering based on uploaded documents. The mobile apps include audio overviews, AI generated podcasts with background playback and offline support, the ability to create and manage notebooks and easy integration of content from websites, PDFs and YouTube videos. Additionally, the apps feature light and dark modes that adapt to device settings, and the timing of the launch suggests Google may provide further details during the upcoming I o keynote Bloomberg reported that Nintendo has contracted Samsung to manufacture the Nvidia designed custom 8nm processor for the upcoming Switch 2, a change from the original Switch's TSMC chip. Neither company nor Nvidia commented this processor production would be a significant win for Samsung, potentially enabling Nintendo to ship over 20 million units by March 2026. Nvidia optimized the chipset for Samsung, allowing Nintendo to avoid competition for TSMC resources Nintendo anticipates no component shortages and projects 15 million switch2 sales in its first year below analysts estimates of 16.8 million likely due to tariffs despite 2.2 million pre order applications in Japan, Bluesky is testing a new feature that allows select users to link their Twitch or YouTube accounts, displaying a live badge on their profiles when you're streaming to direct users off platform. This early stage test, described as supporting streamers, journalists and live event shares, follows a similar display for the NBA's official account. This move by the ad free platform suggests a desire to play a larger role in real time updates and become a destination for following live events, potentially tapping into the influence sports fans have had on platforms like X. Despite unclear immediate business benefits, Microsoft is integrating AI actions into the Windows 11 File Explorer, allowing users to right click files for quick access to AI features like Image Background, Blurring, Object Erasure and Office File Summarization. Initially tested for images with features like Bing Visual Search and tools for the photos and Paint apps, similar AI actions are planned for Office files, limited initially to Microsoft 365 commercial subscribers with Copilot. These additions join an existing Ask Copilot option in the File Explorer's right click menu. Alongside these changes, Microsoft is also testing visual updates to the Windows 11 widgets board with a more personalized feed featuring Copilot curated stories and a new User Interaction Aware CPU power management feature to reduce power consumption on inactive laptops and tablets. And finally, Qualcomm has confirmed Its Snapdragon Summit 2025 will be held in Maui, Hawaii on September 23rd. 25, moving the unveiling of its next flagship chip, anticipated as the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 or Elite Gen 2, to an earlier time frame than its typical October schedule. The successor of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, found in devices like the Galaxy S25 series, is expected to feature TSMC's 3nm N3P process, second generation custom Orion cores, and the Adreno 840 HP. While it's uncertain if the upcoming Galaxy S26 will utilize this Snapdragon chip, with possibilities of an Exynos inclusion or a split base on region. A special for Galaxy variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2, potentially built on Samsung's 2 nanometer process, might not be ready for the next Galaxy S lineup. At the outset of the episode (02:09), Rob Dunwood reports that Intel is contemplating the sale of its network and edge businesses. This strategic move is aimed at allowing Intel to focus more intently on its core and PC data center chip markets. Dunwood explains, “Intel is looking to streamline its operations by focusing on areas where it holds competitive advantage” (02:15). The potential divestiture follows Intel’s recent sale of a majority stake in Altera for $4.46 billion, signaling a broader effort to rejuvenate its market position amid challenges in the datacenter and PC sectors.
Rob Dunwood continues with significant news from Microsoft (02:45). Microsoft has officially open-sourced its Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) after a multi-year development period. This initiative allows the developer community to contribute to WSL’s codebase, fostering improvements in performance and Linux integration. Dunwood highlights, “Open-sourcing WSL is a major milestone that underscores Microsoft’s commitment to making Windows a more developer-friendly platform” (02:50). Initially launched with Windows 10, WSL has evolved substantially, now existing as a separate package in Windows 11, enhancing its capabilities and user adoption.
A pivotal segment of the episode (03:30) delves into the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Epic Games regarding Fortnite’s presence in the App Store. A federal judge has mandated that Apple must either approve Fortnite’s return or provide a legal rationale for its refusal. Rob explains, “Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has expressed significant frustration, indicating that Apple is in a position to resolve the matter and hinting at potential contempt charges if it fails to comply” (03:35). This comes after Epic Games filed a motion and a prior ruling accused Apple of anti-competitive practices and non-compliance with court orders. Apple had previously opted to wait for a 9th Circuit ruling before taking action, but the judge is now pressing for immediate resolution.
Moving forward, the episode covers Spotify’s latest update in response to the court’s decision regarding Apple’s App Store policies (04:15). Spotify has enabled US users to view audiobook pricing and make purchases directly within the app. This update allows Premium users to buy additional audiobook hours beyond the included 15 hours per month. Rob notes, “Spotify believes this change reduces barriers for audiobook listeners and provides a more seamless experience for publishers and authors” (04:20). This move is seen as Spotify aligning with the spirit of the court’s decision to promote fair pricing and easier purchasing processes without imposing extra fees from Apple.
In a significant development for productivity tools, Google has released its Notebook LM applications for Android and iOS ahead of its Google I/O 2025 event (05:00). These AI-powered note-taking and research tools, initially exclusive to desktop users since their 2023 debut, now offer mobile accessibility. Features include smart summaries, Q&A based on uploaded documents, audio overviews, AI-generated podcasts, and offline support. Rob summarizes, “The mobile apps’ integration with various content types like websites, PDFs, and YouTube videos enhances user flexibility and productivity” (05:05). The timing suggests that Google may reveal additional features during the upcoming keynote.
Nintendo has entered a partnership with Samsung to manufacture a custom 8nm processor designed by Nvidia for the upcoming Switch 2 console (05:45). Unlike the original Switch, which used TSMC chips, this shift is poised to be a significant win for Samsung, potentially enabling Nintendo to ship over 20 million units by March 2026. Rob explains, “By optimizing the chipset for Samsung, Nintendo aims to avoid TSMC’s resource competition, anticipating no component shortages” (05:50). Despite these advancements, Nintendo projects first-year sales slightly below analyst estimates, attributing the shortfall to tariffs, though pre-orders in Japan remain robust.
Bluesky is testing a new feature that allows select users to link their Twitch or YouTube accounts, displaying a live badge on their profiles when streaming (06:20). This initiative aims to support streamers, journalists, and live event sharers by driving traffic off-platform. Rob comments, “This early-stage test indicates Bluesky’s intent to become a hub for real-time updates and capitalize on the influence of live event enthusiasts” (06:25). The feature mirrors existing integrations, such as the live badge for the NBA’s official account, suggesting Bluesky’s strategy to enhance user engagement and platform loyalty.
Microsoft is enhancing Windows 11 by incorporating AI-driven actions into the File Explorer’s right-click menu (07:00). Users can now access features like Image Background Blurring, Object Erasure, and Office File Summarization directly from the File Explorer. Rob notes, “These AI integrations, initially available to Microsoft 365 commercial subscribers with Copilot, signify Microsoft’s push towards a more intelligent and efficient user experience” (07:05). Additionally, Microsoft is testing visual updates to the widgets board, including a personalized feed curated by Copilot and a new CPU power management feature aimed at reducing power consumption on inactive devices.
The episode concludes with Qualcomm’s announcement of its Snapdragon Summit 2025, scheduled to take place in Maui, Hawaii, on September 23rd (07:45). This event will feature the unveiling of Qualcomm’s next flagship chip, anticipated to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 or Elite Gen 2. Rob highlights, “The new chipset is expected to utilize TSMC’s advanced 3nm N3P process and second-generation custom Orion cores, setting a new standard for mobile performance” (07:50). While there is uncertainty regarding its inclusion in the upcoming Galaxy S26 series—potentially due to regional variations or Exynos alternatives—there is speculation about a special Galaxy variant built on Samsung’s 2nm process.
