These are the daily Tech Headlines for Tuesday, September 9th, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. Judge William Amset rejected Anthropic's $1.5 billion privacy settlement, citing concerns about its incompleteness and potential unfairness to the 500,000 authors whose works were used to train large language models. He demanded more details on the works, authors, notification processes and claim forms emphasizing the need for clear notice, opt in opt out options and protection against future lawsuits. Deadlines are set for September 15th for a final list of works and October 10th for court approval of works, class members and the claim before preliminary settlement approval. OpenAI refutes claims of a California exit due to regulatory issues, specifically resistance to its nonprofit to for profit conversion. This conversion, crucial for unlocking $19 billion, is under investigation by California's Attorney General for potential violations of charitable trust law. Correlation of Nonprofits. Labor groups, Philanthropies and Meta also oppose the move. Failure could lead to investor withdrawal or relocation would be a significant logistical challenge given CE Sam Altman's ties to the Bay Area and the concentration of OpenAI's AI researchers in San Francisco. This regulatory pressure adds to the existing challenges, like fierce competition for AI talent. The United States has ended agreements with European nations to counter disinformation from countries like Russia, China and Iran following the restructuring of the State Department's Global Engagement center, or gec. Critics view this as a setback in the information war, especially with the rise of AI driven disinformation. The gec, intended to combat platform disinformation faced Republican accusations of censorship despite denials from its former head. Supporters of the withdrawal, however, argue that GEC's actions were ineffective and against free speech principles. This decision occurs as Russia continues its significant disinformation efforts. Firefox is introducing a new feature that allows users to generate AI powered summaries of web pages by shaking their iPhone, tapping a Thunderbolt icon, or selecting Summarize page from the three Dots menu. This feature will use Apple's On Demand device AI model on iPhone 15 Pro or newer, running iOS 26 and Mozilla's cloud based AI system. For older iOS versions, users can disable the Shake to Summarize feature, which only works on web pages under 5,000 words. Firefox is one of the first major third party apps to integrate with Apple Intelligence, which plans to expand the feature globally and to Android users. After its initial US and English only launch, Google's VO3AI video generator now offers 1080p resolution and 916 vertical video formats, making it more suitable for mobile and social media. This functionality is available to developers via API with 1080p currently limited to 16.9 aspect ratio videos. Both VO3 and the faster, more affordable V3 fast model are considered stable and ready for scale production. Use in the Gemini API with significant price reductions from $0.75 to $0.40 per second for VO3 and from $0.40 to $0.15 per second for V3 fast. These changes signal Google's push for wider adoption and anticipated integration with platforms like YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels. Plex, the streaming service with 25 million users, has advised a password reset and sign out form for all devices due to a data breach. The breach compromised usernames, email addresses, scrambled passwords and authentication data. It's unclear if the scrambled passwords can be deciphered or if the authentication data could allow unauthorized access. Plex has not released details on the breach's extent, duration or nature, only stating that the access method used by the third party has been addressed. Google's new Pixel 10, despite its AI software focus, has withdrawn its highly anticipated Daily Hub feature from public preview just two weeks post launch. Daily Hub, touted as a key AI offering for weather, calendar and content recommendations, was pooled by Google to enhance its performance and refine the personalized experience. However, earlier user feedback suggests it was more of a gimmick, often misinterpreting user interest. LG is adding an Xbox app to its in vehicle entertainment system, enabling Xbox Game Pass ultimate subscribers to stream games in select Internet connected vehicles using Bluetooth controllers and Internet. Both LG and Microsoft state the feature is for passengers but have not specified how they will prevent drivers from using it, unlike Tesla, which disables similar features when the car is in motion. And finally, Ryan Daly, operator of the defunct Modded Hardware.com has been ordered to pay Nintendo $2 million in a was state district court settlement for knowingly selling devices like Mig Switch and Mig Dumper, which are designed to circumvent Nintendo's technological protection measures. Daily also sold and installed mod chips to bypass Switch DRM and distributed copyrighted Nintendo games, actions that continued despite Nintendo's initial contact in March 2024 and his verbal and written agreement to cease sales, leading to Nintendo filing the lawsuit in June.
