These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Thursday, May 1, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. A judge in the Epic Games versus Apple case has ruled that Apple must immediately cease collecting fees on purchases made outside of its App Store and cannot prevent developers from directing users to external purchase options. The decision of significant wins for Epic Compass Judge Javon Gonzalez Rogers stated that Apple willfully disregarded a previous injunction and has referred that matter to the U.S. attorney for potential criminal contempt proceedings. The ruling specifies that Apple is prohibited from charging commissions on external purchases, restricting the presentation of external purchase links, blocking calls to action, or hindering users from leaving an app beyond displaying a neutral message. Apple has stated its strong disagreement with the ruling and intends to appeal, while affirming it will comply with the court's order. In the interim, Microsoft has increased the global recommended retail prices for its Xbox Series S and X consoles, Xbox Wireless controllers and some upcoming first party Xbox games, with game prices potentially reaching $79.99 this holiday season. The Xbox Series S512GB version has seen an $80 increase to $379.99, while the 1 TB Xbox Series X now costs $599.99, a $100 rise. Other models also included price adjustments. Retail price for the base Xbox Wireless controller is now 64.99and the Xbox Wireless Headset is now $119.99. In other Microsoft news, executives have cautioned that customers may experience AI service disruptions due to high demand outpacing data center capacity, with potential constraints arising as early as June, according to CFO Amy Hood. Despite an anticipated balance by the end of the fourth quarter, increased demand has led to a projected shortfall. This timing is notable as Microsoft has reportedly canceled multiple data center le this year, although the company maintains these cancellations are unrelated to the potential AI capacity issues, and reaffirms its commitment to a previously announced $80 billion investment in data centers, with half allocated to the U.S. google is financially supporting the Electrical Training alliance to train 100,000 electrical workers and 30,000 new apprentices to meet the engineering demands for AI, as highlighted in their white paper Powering a New Era of American Innovation. The paper notes that AI data centers could require an additional 15 to 90 gig gigawatts of energy by 2030, necessitating a more robust and efficient US power grid and increased investments in alternative energy sources and the electrical workforce. McKinsey estimates the need for 130,000 more electricians by 2030 for data centers and manufacturing, a challenge given that retirees currently outpace new entrants, which Google aims to address through this investment in training. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed plans to monetize the company's generative AI assistant, potentially through ads, product recommendations and premium subscriptions for enhanced features. The announcement followed the launch of Meta's standalone AI app, highlighting the assistant's significance to the company, which aims to make it the world's most used. Zuckerberg emphasized a focus on growing Meta AI's user base, which has already reached nearly 1 billion monthly users an increase in engagement over the next year before actively pursuing monetization, a strategy similar to the gradual introduction of ads on threads, which now boasts 350 million monthly active users and increased engagement due to improved recommendation systems. Powered by Meta's Llama model, Pinterest is introducing new features to help users identify and avoid AI generated content on its platform. The company will automatically label images detected as AI generated or edited with AI modified stamps in the bottom left corner of its expanded pins and will allow users to reduce the visibility of such content. This initiative aims to empower users to make informed choices about the content they see with Pinterest, analyzing image metadata like Google Synth ID or Dolby's content credentials and employing AI classifications for detection, while providing an appeal process for mislabeled pins. Tesla refuted reports that it engaged recruitment firms to find a replacement for CEO Elon Musk. The denial followed a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday claiming the board began searching for Musk's successor last month due to concerns over his focus on his role in Donald Trump's administration and Tesla's declining stock price. However, Tesla, via an official statement and Musk himself on X, labeled the report as absolutely false and a discredit to journalism. Tesla Chair Robin Denholm also confirmed on that the report was erroneous and that the board has full confidence in Musk's leadership to execute the company's growth plans. Bloomberg reported that Google's AdSense network has begun displaying ads within user chats on select third party AI chatbots. After initial testing with AI search startups IASK and Liner, a Google spoke person confirmed that AdSense for search now supports relevant ads in conversational AI experiences. This move indicates Google's strategy to leverage the growing popularity of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude for web searches and queries, potentially potentially offsetting any competitive threats. This development follows Google's recent introduction of ads with its AI overviews for certain search queries, further expanding its advertising footprint in the AI driven landscape, where it is heavily invested in tools and models like Gemini. And finally, WhatsApp now has over 3 billion monthly active users, making it a crucial platform for the company's AI strategy. WhatsApp is seeing the strongest Meta AI usage among Meta's apps, primarily in the one on one chats. While WhatsApp's global presence provides easy AI access, Meta is focused, focusing on a standalone Meta AI app to gain leadership in the US messaging market. The WhatsApp business platform is also growing, contributing significantly to the company's app revenue. And Meta is testing AI tools for business on the platform, including an agent management interface and the ability to train AI on business information and activate chatbots and customer chats.
