These are the daily Tech Headlines for Wednesday, June 4, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Federal judge temporarily blocked Florida's new law restricting children's social media use, deeming it likely unconstitutional. Judge Mark Walker sided with tech groups, stating that the law, which mandated parental consent for 14 and 15 year olds and banned those under 14, was overly broad and violated First Amendment rights. While Florida argued the law aimed to protect children from addictive features the judge found it problematic, particularly the outright ban and the reliance on overall time spent in RAPs, although the requirement to terminate accounts upon parental request for those under 16 was upheld. Chinese lab Deepseek recently launched an updated R1 Reasoning AI model showing strong performance in math and coding, but speculation arose among AI researchers about its training data source, with some suggesting potential inclusion of Google's Gemini family of AI. Developer Sam Paik claimed evidence that DeepSeq's R10528 model was trained on Gemini outputs, citing similar word choices. Another developer corroborated, noting that models thoughts resemble Gemini traces, although this wasn't definitive proof. Microsoft announced that it is providing a complementary cybersecurity program to European governments aimed at strengthening their defenses against cyber threats, including those amplified by artificial intelligence. This initiative follows an increase in cyber attacks across Europe. Many attribute it to state sponsored entities from China, Iran, North Korea and Russia. The program seeks to enhance intelligence sharing concerning AI driven threats and prevent and disrupt attacks proactively. In an interview with Reuters, Microsoft President Brad Smith stated, quote, bringing more of what we developed in the United States to Europe will fortify cybersecurity protection for more European institutions. End quote Uber has launched senior friendly accounts across the United States and select international regions, featuring larger fonts, a simplified interface and clearer instructions. This initiative caters to the growing senior demographic and their increasing technology use, reflecting the global projection that one sixth of the population will be age 60 and above by 2030 and addressing the need for technology design with specific requirements for older adults. Payment companies PADDLE and revenuecat have partnered to simplify app monetization across web and mobile platforms, allowing developers to manage subscriptions outside the Apple App Store. This collaboration is a response to the Epic v Apple ruling, which grants developers more freedom in external payment systems, but also introduces complexities in taxes compliance and cross platform support. By integrating revenuecat analytics with Paddles payment and compliance management, developers can offer users seamless access across iOS, Android and the web, potentially increasing revenue growth while simplifying technical and operational challenges. Samsung is alerting customers that accounts inactive for two years will be deleted starting July 31, resulting in restricted access and data loss. Deleted accounts and data are non recoverable, potentially impacting access to Galaxy Store and Samsung apps like Health and wearables. Exceptions exist for registered family accounts, those with reward point activity or purchase records, and account deletion will be avoided with minimal activity such as logging in every two years. Google's NotebookLM, the AI powered note taking app, now allows users to share notebooks via public links enabling viewers to interact with AI generated content like audio overviews and FAQs, although editing remains restricted. Launched as an experiment in 2023, NotebookLM has become a popular tool for understanding various materials such as notes, documents and videos, offering AI summaries, discussions and chats. With a mobile app release last month, Google has temporarily halted the rollout of its AI powered Axe Photos feature due to issues with latency, quality and user experience. According to Google's product manager, Jamie Aspinall, the feature, which is powered by a specialized version of the Gemini AI model, isn't where it needs to be. The company plans to address these issues and release an improved version within approximately two weeks, aiming to restore the speed and recall of the original search functionality. And finally, Amazon's MGM Studios is developing a film titled Artificial about the dramatic boardroom events of OpenAI in 2023, which saw CEO Sam Altman's brief dismissal and subsequent reinstatement. Luca Guadagnino is in negotiations to direct, with Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro reportedly considered for roles. Production could begin as early as this summer in Italy and San Francisco. The situation at OpenAI unfolded over a week, starting with Altman's firing on November 17, 2023, reportedly for lack of candor with the board, leading to Microsoft Swiss announcement of its own AI division, led by Altman, before he returned to OpenAI.
