These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, May 1, 2026. I'm Rob Dunwood. Apple's Mac segment exceeded expectations in Q2 2026, reporting $8.4 billion in revenue, a 6% year over year increase. This strong performance was driven by the popularity of the new MacBook Neo, which contributed to a record number of new Mac customers and an unexpected surge in demand from customers using Mac Mini and Studio devices to run local AI models like OpenClaw. CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the demand for the NEO was off the charts and that the supply constraints for desktop models, which were selling out due to AI interests, may take several months to balance. Enterprise demand is also rising with companies like Perplexity using Mac for building enterprise grade AI assistants. The US Senate unanimously passed a rule barring senators from trading or prediction markets like Kalshi and polymarket following concerns over insider trading and high profile incidents involving candidates and a U.S. army soldier. Democratic members of Congress are also calling for broader CFTC regulations to prevent corruption and prohibit event contracts on sensitive topics like war and elections. Both Kalshi and polymarket praise this in its action, noting that it aligns with their existing policies and will help increase industry trust. Meta has threatened to withdraw Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp from New Mexico following demands from Attorney General Raul Torres for sweeping platform changes including 99% accuracy in CSAM detection, mandatory age verification and restrictions on end to end encryption for minors. While Meta argues these requirements are technologically infeasible and violate due process, Torres contends the company is simply prioritizing advertising revenue and profit over the fundamental safety of children. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg linked upcoming layoffs to prioritizing AI infrastructure spending over people oriented costs. The company plans to cut 10% of its workforce on May 20, with more reductions expected later this year. Zuckerberg stated these cuts are unrelated to Meta's new AI AI native structure. However, employee backlash has grown due to the company's lack of communication and a new initiative to track mouse movements and keystrokes for AI training. A critical local privilege escalation vulnerability copy fail 31431 is threatening most Linux distributions. Exploit code was released by security firm Theori before many vendors could issue fixes, creating a zero day patch gap. Experts describe it as one of the most severe make me root flaws in recent history, stemming from a logic error in the kernel's crypto API that allows unprivileged users to reliably gain access to root. Linux users should immediately apply available patches from vendors like Arch and Fedora or follow mitigation guidance from SUSE, Red Hat and Ubuntu. OpenAI has launched advanced account security for ChatGPT users, an opt in suite for protections targeting high profile individuals but available to all to prevent data extortion. As part of AAS, OpenAI partnered with Yubico to offer co branded hardware security key that use cryptographic identifiers to block phishing by requiring physical access. While this aligns with an industry shift toward AI centric security, OpenAI cautions that lost keys result in permanent account loss. The Senate Judiciary Committee has unanimously approved a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senators Josh Howley and Richard Blumenthal that would require AI companies to implement age verification and restrict minors from accessing AI companions, sexually explicit content or self harm encouragement. While committee approval is only a preliminary step toward federal regulation, the rare unanimous support suggests the bill could move quickly through the Senate. This legislative push follows calls from U.S. attorneys General for better child protections and recent lawsuits alleging that AI platforms are used by teenagers to plan suicides. Nissan has canceled its $500 million plan to produce electric vehicles at its Canton, Mississippi plant, opting instead to manufacture gasoline and hybrid models such as the new Xterra to align with shifting market conditions and the removal of the federal EV tax credit. This pivot reflect reflects a broader trend among U.S. automakers like Ford and GM, who are scaling back EV programs due to tepid domestic sales even as the EV demand reaches record highs in Europe and Asia amid rising global fuel prices. And finally, Microsoft is expanding the Windows 11 Xbox mode to all PCs, providing a full screen interface similar to Steam's Big Picture mode that originally debuted on the Asus Xbox Ally. While the initial release felt like a beta, the Xbox team has utilized player feedback from handheld users to refine the experience for the broader PC PC rollout. Additionally, Microsoft is delivering updates to the Xbox Ally X with autosr upscaling and new dashboard customization features for Xbox console owners, including the ability to disable quick resume for specific games.
