These are the daily tech headlines for the week ending Saturday, July 4, 2026. I'm Sarah Lane. Let's catch up on the news. The South China Morning Post reports it reviewed an internal Alibaba notice banning employees from using Anthropic's Claude code for work after classifying it as high risk software following reports that Anthropic embedded hidden code to detect whether users were in China or connected to Chinese AI labs. Sources say the tracking code was previously built into Claude code and was later uncovered by security researchers on on Reddit and GitHub. The ban takes effect July 10. A BBCI investigation found that Instagram approved and displayed paid ads in India promoting child sexual abuse material, including ads linking users to Telegram channels selling illegal content for as little as 99 rupees. After the BBC contacted Meta, the company removed the ads, suspended the accounts and and said no moderation system is perfect. But India's government summoned Meta over the findings. Mid Journey is asking a federal judge to force Disney, Universal and Warner Brothers to disclose how they use AI internally, arguing that if the studios also train AI on copyrighted material without permission, it could strengthen Mid Journey's fair use and unclean hands defenses. And in the studio's copyright lawsuit, a magistrate judge previously limited that discovery to consumer facing AI tools, but Mid Journey is appealing that decision. The studios argue the request does not change the core allegation that Mid Journey copied and distributed their copyrighted characters without authorization. Spotify removed more than 500,000 bot generated streams from Malcolm Todd song Earrings and after it reached number one on the US chart, with the spike coinciding with unusual betting activity on prediction market Cal Sheet. Spotify says its fraud detection systems identified artificial streaming and there's no suggestion Todd or his team were involved. But there are real concerns that prediction markets create new incentives for manipulating real world events and metrics. Microsoft is rolling out support to sign into its Edge browser with a Google account, giving Gmail users a way to syn their browser data without creating a Microsoft account. The feature is coming gradually with Edge version 150 on Windows and Mac, which also starts phasing out the browser's sidebar app list ahead of Edge's planned move to a two week release schedule in August. Amazon says its Project Leo satellite Internet service is getting ready to launch after a mission by the United Launch alliance, or ula. That's the rocket company, jointly owned by Boeing and Lockheed Martin increased its constellation to more than 390 satellites. That's enough to provide continuous coverage across its initial service areas once the satellites reach operational orbit. Amazon plans service later this year and speeding up deployments using ULA's newer Vulcan rocket. But it has some big catching up to do with SpaceX's Starlink network of more than 10,000 satellites. A new study from RAMP and Revelio Labs so suggests companies that invest heavily in AI actually end up hiring more people, not fewer. The increase doesn't show up for six to 12 months, and the researchers say the biggest gains are in entry level roles, likely because companies are looking for workers with AI skills. The findings also highlight that AI adoption doesn't automatically solve business problems, as companies are still wrestling with things like costs and trust and how much control they have over AI systems. Amazon somewhat quietly refreshed its Fire HD 10 tablet with one small but welcome upgrade. RAM increases from 3GB to 4 gigs, which should help the tablet feel a bit snappier for everyday use. Most of the hardware is unchanged, but the price has gone up to $155. The 64GB model is gone for now and the tablet is still only sold with lock screen ads.
