These are the Daily Tech Headlines for Tuesday, August 19, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwood. Apple for the first time is making all US bound iPhone models in India. This includes all four iPhone 17 models, even the pro level versions which will ship from India for their initial release next month. This strategic move aims to reduce the company's dependence on China and comes after Apple brought in the number of local factories producing iPhones. Now utilizing five factories, including recently opened plants. This shift primarily mitigates the effects of tariffs. After the majority of iPhone production for the US Market was relocated from China to India, the United States and Britain have reached an agreement regarding law enforcement access to Apple customer cloud data. A US Intelligence official confirmed that Britain withdrew its demand for a backdoor that would have jeopardized encrypted data and civil liberties. This decision came after months of lobbying by Apple in Washington and his earlier withdrawal of an encrypted storage feature for British users. Despite global government pressure. Apple has consistently refused to create such a tool, citing concerns about potential misuse. Neither Apple nor the British home office commented on the matter. SoftBank announced on Monday a $2 billion investment in intel, paying $23 per share for the chipmaker's common stock, which saw a 6% rise to $25 per share in extended trading after closing at $23.66. This investment, representing about 2% of intel, positions SoftBank biggest shareholder, offering a significant vote of confidence to intel, which has struggled to capitalize on the AI boom in advanced semiconductors and has heavily invested in a manufacturing business that has yet to secure a major customer. Google and Kairos Power are partnering to build Hermes 2, Google's first nuclear reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, operational by 2030. This 50 megawatt plant will power Google's data centers through a TVA agreement, part of a larger 500 megawatt SMR deal for facilities in Tennessee and Alabama by 2035. This marks the first corporate SMR power purchase, with Google's investment reducing costs for both Google and TVA customers. Nvidia is reportedly developing a new AI chip for China, tentatively named the B30A, which will utilize its Blackwell architecture and be more powerful than its current H20 model. While the White House administration has indicated a possibility for more advanced Nvidia chips being sold in China, regulatory approval is uncertain due to Washington's concerns concerns about China's access to US AI technology. The B30A is expected to feature a single die design delivering half the raw power of the dual die configuration found in Nvidia's flagship B300 accelerator card. Substack now allows users to purchase subscriptions outside of Apple's In App purchasing system on the US App Store. This change, driven by new App Store rules, eliminates Apple's commission on web sales, offering lower price ranges for consumers and the same take home amount for creators who can also disable automatic price adjustments for Apple's fees. The new external payments option currently applies only to new subscriptions, and Substack is exploring similar rules in the EU and the United Kingdom. NordVPN has announced the discontinuation of its mess. Net feature effective December 1, prompting users to find alternative solutions for connected computers, web traffic routing and file sharing. While NordVPN highlights its pioneering nature as a VPN feature allowing device linking without third party servers, the company admits it never found its audience, primarily due to its business oriented benefits not resonating with the majority of personal VPN users. For those few who utilize MeshNet NordVPN suggest NordLocker or Google Drive for file sharing and zero tier for remote access as viable alternatives to its departing feature. Linktree, a widely used link in bio service, has been inaccessible in India for several days, baffling even the Australian startup itself. Over the past week, users in India have reported issues accessing Link Tree, with initial reports on X and observations by TechCrunch indicating a brief message suggesting a government block later replaced by a generic SSL error. The linktree app has also been affected, remaining inaccessible in the country. And finally, Spotify has launched a new custom transition feature for subscribers, allowing them to create more professional and personalized playlists by automatically adding or customizing transitions between tracks using options like Fade, rise, or Blend. To access this feature, users can open any playlists, select Mix from the toolbar, and then adjust settings for volume, EQ and effects, while utilizing waveform and beat data to optimize transition starting points.
