These are the daily tech headlines for Tuesday, March 18, 2025. I'm Rob Dunwoody. Apple's Google Cloud division has acquired Wiz, a New York based cybersecurity firm, for a record breaking $32 billion. Wiz, an Israeli founded startup specializing in cloud based cybersecurity, was valued at $16 billion in 2024 and had been preparing for an IPO. This deal marks Alphabet's largest acquisition to date, surpassing a $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility. In 2012, OpenAI will begin testing ChatGPT Connectors, a new feature that will allow ChatGPT team subscribers to link workspace, Google Slack accounts to ChatGPT. By connecting these apps, the chatbot can answer questions informed by files, presentations, spreadsheets and Slack conversations across those accounts, similar to how it uses World Knowledge via web search. OpenAI plans to expand ChatGPT connectors to other platforms like Microsoft, SharePoint and Box in the future. US Vice President J.D. vance has expressed confidence that an agreement to resolve TikTok's ownership dispute will be reached by the April 5 deadline. The the platform's future has been uncertain since a law requiring its Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell the app or face a ban was enacted in January. President Donald Trump delayed the law's enforcement by 75 days, allowing for time for negotiations, and assigned Vance and National Security Adviser Michael Wallace to oversee the potential sale. Trump confirmed discussions with four interested groups, and Vance believes a deal will create an independent US owned TikTok while addressing national security concerns, though some details may require further negotiation after the deadline. Apple has lost its appeal against a regulatory assessment in Germany, opening the company to stricter controls, the Federal Court of Justice ruled Tuesday, upholding The German Cartel Office's 2023 designation of Apple as a company of paramount Cross market significance for competition. This designation places Apple alongside tech giants like Google and Meta on Germany's list of companies subject to potential measures aimed at curbing their market dominance. Google announced new healthcare focused products and features on Tuesday, including enhanced health query overviews in search, medical records, APIs and new health centric AI models. The updated search experience leverages AI ranking systems to expand Knowledge Panel answers across thousands of health related topics, with additional support for healthcare queries in Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese on mobile. While Search already provided Knowledge Panel answers for common ailments like the flu or a cold, this update significantly broadens its coverage, the company said. Chinese Electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has unveiled new fast charging technology capable of adding 249 miles of range in just five minutes. This Super E platform tech charges at peak speeds of 1,000 kilowatts, twice as fast as the upcoming Tesla V4 superchargers. BYD plans to invest significantly in charging infrastructure, with over 4,000 new fast chargers planned across China initially. The faster charging will be available in two new models, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV. Starting approximately at WhatsApp is implementing measures to curb spam by limiting broadcast messages for both individual and business users. The company will begin testing adjustable monthly caps on individual broadcasts, with one example being a 30 message limit. Meta suggests using status updates or channels for reaching larger audiences. Business accounts, which currently enjoy unlimited free broadcast messaging will soon face similar restrictions, with the paid version Offering additional tools During a healthcare focused event in New York on Tuesday, Google announced the development of TX Gemma, a collection of OpenAI models for drug discovery. And finally, Roku users have reported seeing video ads automatically play before they could view the OS's home screen. A Reddit user, for example, posted yesterday, I just turned on my Roku and got an ad for a movie. Before I got to the regular Roku home screen, multiple apparent users reported seeing an ad for the movie Moana 2. The ads have a close option, but some users appear not to have seen it. When reached for comment, a Roku spoke spokesperson shared a company statement that confirms that the auto playing ads are expected behavior but not a permanent part of the Roku operating system currently. Instead, Roku claimed it was just trying the ad capability out.
