These are the daily tech headlines for Tuesday, October 21, 2025 I'm Rob Dunwood Amazon is reportedly accelerating its automation plans, aiming to replace over 600,000 US jobs by 2023 through robotics, even as product sales are projected to double. Internal documents suggest the company's robotics team is working to automate 75% of its operations, expecting to eliminate 160,000 US rolls by 2027 and save an estimated 12.6 billion do billion from 2025 to 2027 by reducing cost by 30 cents per item. NASA is considering reopening the lunar lander contract competition and pushing the moon landing deadline to 2029 due to SpaceX's delays in developing the Human Landing System, or HLS. Despite Elon Musk assertions that rapid progress and recent suborbital Successes with Starship, NASA's patient is wearing thin, and they're exploring alternatives like Blue Origin to meet the president's goal of a lunar landing within this term. Challenges to maintain science funding HBO Max has increased prices for all of its ad supported and ad free plans effective October 21, 2025 for new subscribers. The Basic with Ads plan now costs 1099 monthly or $109.99 annually. The standard plan is $18.49 monthly or $184.99 annually and the premium plan is $22.99 monthly or 229.99 annually. Existing monthly subscribers will see the price increase on their next billing date on or after November Twent yearly subscribers will not see an increase until their next renewal. X is expanding a pay per use API plan to more developers, shifting from its previous tier based model to a system that charges for specific requests with no monthly caps. The change follows earlier attempts in 2023 to monetize API access through paid tiers and top up packs, which were met with developer dissatisfaction. The new usage based plan aims to re engage developers in building applications on the social network. Yelp's latest product update features significant AI enhancements, including the Yelp Assistant chatbot, now available across all business categories. This AI assistant uses business websites, user posts and past queries for better service recommendations. The update also introduces AI powered calling with Yelp Host for table service restaurants and Yelp Receptionists for other local businesses. Finally, Menu Vision, a feature allowing users to view dish photos and reviews by pointing their camera at a menu, is rolling out this week on both iOS and Android. Microsoft swiftly released an emergency out of band fix KB5070773 for Windows 11 to resolve a critical bug from its October 14th update. This bug disabled USB mouse and keyboard functionality in Windows recovery environment, preventing users from recovering or Factory resetting their PCs. The patch, issued less than a week after the problematic update, restored essential functionality for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. This marks the second time this year Microsoft has had to issue an urgent fix for Windows. Following a monthly update, Airbnb is rolling out new features to enhance user interaction and search capabilities. Travelers on the same experiences can now see other participants names and origins and connect via chat after the event to share photos and make future plans with privacy controls in place. Additionally, Airbnb is improving its search by suggesting properties users might have missed due to their filters, and has redesigned the maps view to allow searching for nearby points of interest. Apple has legally challenged the EU's Digital Markets act, arguing that the antitrust rules placed hugely onerous and intrusive burdens on the company. Apple's lawyer, Daniel Beard, presented arguments to the General Court in Luxembourg contesting the 2023 law on three obligations for iPhone hardware compatibility with rivals, the inclusion of the App Store under the rules, and a decision to investigate imessage Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring a sale either of the entire company or just its Warner Brothers division after receiving multiple acquisition offers. This move follows Warner Brothers Discovery's restructuring into two entities, Warner Bros. And Discovery Global, to manage its streaming and cable operations. President and CEO David Zaslav stated the goal is to enhance shareholder value, strategically position the company in the media industry and re establish its studios as leaders. And finally, Apple has introduced a new customization feature for Liquid Glass, allowing users to select either a clear or tinted appearance through a new setting in the latest beta updates for its mobile operating and desktop operating systems. This move by Apple demonstrates its commitment to user feedback during their early public launches of iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and Mac OS 26. The liquid glass interface, a major design overhaul, has garnered mixed reactions from users.
