These are the daily tech headlines for Friday, June 5, 2026. I'm Rob Dunlewood. Meta introduced a new conversational AI creator assistant on Facebook, rolling out in the US, Canada and India that provides personalized content recommendations and performance insights to encourage frequent posting. The move is designed to keep creators active on Facebook and reduce reliance on third party tools like ChatGPT as Meta competes with rivals. Meta is also expanding its AI translation for Facebook reels to include new languages like Arabic, Bahasa, Indonesian, French, Thai and Vietnamese, featuring automatic tone translation and an optional lip sync feature to help creators reach broader global audiences. The US President's executive order requiring government oversight for advanced AI models was reportedly scaled back following pressure from the tech industry, which warned of a chilling effect. The revised order reduced the voluntary pre release review time from 90 to 30 days and request rather than mandates that AI firms participate in benchmarking to assess cyber capabilities. While OpenAI agreed to comply and allow regulator assessment, critics including Rep. Don Beyer called the policy underwhelming and suggested it created a new Wild west environment for AI development. Anthropic is warning the AI industry about the imminent risk of full recursive self improvement where AI models can advance themselves without human control, posing a major risk to humanity despite potential benefits. In Science and Health, co founder Jack Clark argues that tech companies must slow development and build a brake pedal for human intervention, comparing the situation to driving a car with only a gas puddle. He stressed that major AI Companies like Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI must cooperate, citing the stabilization of the nuclear arms race as a precedent for stabilizing AI development. This warning comes as both anthropic and SpaceX are moving forward with large IPOs. In other anthropic news, the conflict between the DoD and anthropic is de escalating as the firm nears its ipo. Friction began when Anthropic barred military use of its AI for weapons and surveillance, prompting a supply chain risk label from the Pentagon. Ties improved following CEO Dario Amadi's mid April White House visit and a subsequent policy talk with officials like Scott Besant. While Anthropic's mythos system influenced the June 2 AI executive order, legal battles over the risk designation continue and the company remains excluded from certain military simulations. OpenAI is introducing a significantly more capable and compute efficient memory architecture for ChatGPT, which builds on the Background Dreaming feature. This new system synthesizes information across conversations without explicit instruction and will roll out to plus and Pro users first, then to free accounts. Due to efficiency improvements, users gain greater control and visibility with a memory summary they can read, edit and update. The architecture improves context and preference tracking, enabling tailored recommendations such as suggesting compatible photography gear or generating travel itineraries based on past discussions and automatically revises memories for irrelevant the documentary the Story of C, the world's most consequential programming language, is now free on YouTube. The film explores the language's history from Bell Labs and its modern influence, featuring creator Brijarn Straustrup and key contributors like Andre Alexandrescreu. Industry experts including Anders Halsberg, John Romero, Herb Stutter and Chris Lattner also appear in this must watch for tech enthusiasts. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince reports that AI agentic traffic has officially surpassed human Internet traffic for the first time, a milestone reached much sooner than the projected 2027 timeframe. Unlike traditional crawlers or malicious bots, these new agents browse the web like humans to perform tasks such as price comparisons, content indexing, personal assistant services. Current data indicates that bots now account for 57.5% of HTTP requests, signaling a major shift where AI agents have become the primary users of the Web. Meta has integrated a facial recognition feature name tag into its Smart Glasses app, which has millions of downloads. A Wired analysis revealed that biometric face print components were included as early as January, even as Meta claimed the feature was only under consideration. This revives technology meta retired in 2021 due to legal and privacy concerns. While researchers confirmed the feature is functional, over 70 advocacy groups are demanding its removal, citing risk of normalized mass surveillance. And finally, Meta has officially launched Instagram Globally, a new subscription tier priced at $3.99 per month that offers users enhanced visibility and customization tools. Key features include Story Spotlight for profile prioritization, Story Extend to keep content visible for 48 hours, the ability to create multiple audience lists and advanced story analytics such as rewatch stats and viewer search. Subscribers also benefit from exclusive customization options like unique app icons, bio fonts and the ability to pin six profile items and the option to post directly to profiles or highlights while bypassing the main feedback.
