Apple announced Monday it's investing $500 billion in the US over the next four years with a goal to create 20,000 new jobs in R&D, AI and chip manufacturing. Key expansions include a server factory in Texas, a manufacturing academy in Michigan, a silicon production partnership in Arizona, and growth in California, Washington and North Carolina. Also on Monday, Alibaba announced a $52 billion investment in cloud computing and AI over the next three years. Alibaba Cloud is looking to become a leading AI infrastructure provider with the recently introduced Quin 2.5 Max model, which rivals top AI models. Alibaba was also chosen by Apple to integrate AI features in China. In other financial news, Microsoft is still set to spend $80 billion on AI infrastructure this fiscal year, but is reportedly shifting its approach. This is according to data analysis firm TD Cohen. The company has terminated leases with private data center operators, possibly due to an oversupply of capacity, and may be moving some international spending back to the U.S. microsoft has a newly restructured deal with OpenAI, which now allows OpenAI to seek external infrastructure if Microsoft declines to provide it. Google confirmed to Forbes that it plans to replace SMS based authentication with QR code verifications for Gmail accounts to beef up security and reduce reliance on carriers, which can be vulnerable to fraud and phishing. Google didn't provide a timeline for the change process. A European subsidiary of South Africa's Naspers announced that it will acquire Dutch company Just eat takeaway for $4.3 billion in an all cash offer. If the deal is approved, it would create the world's fourth largest food delivery group. Just Eat currently operates in 17 countries Friday Apple released the Vision OS 2.4 developer beta for Apple Vision Pro, which brings Apple intelligence to the headset, including notification summaries, smart replies, advanced photo search, writing tools and image generation features. It also introduces Spatial Gallery, that's a curated collection of immersive content, and an iPhone app for remote device management. The guest user mode can also now be approved from an iPhone or an iPad. The update is set for an April release. Meta has formally expanded Meta AI to the Middle east and North Africa, bringing its AI chatbot to users in 10 countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. With Arabic language support, users can access the Assistant on Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger for recommendations and content creation. Meta also plans to introduce multimodal AI tools like Imagine Me for stylistic selfies and auto dubbing for Instagram reels. Perplexity announced it's developing its own AI powered web browser called Comet, looking to compete with major players like Chrome and other AI driven alternatives. In a post on X Monday, the company launched a signup list for the browser but didn't offer specific details or a timeline. Earlier this month, Perplexity released a deep research product to rival offerings from OpenAI, Google and Xai after an AI powered assistant for Android and an API for AI search back in January. Finally today, Dutch software firm Bird is shifting most operations out of Europe, citing over regulation from policies like the AI act, and announced new hubs in the us, Singapore, Dubai and Istanbul while maintaining a tax base in the Netherlands. Bird recently cut 120 jobs, partly due to AI automation and a push to expand in the Americas and also Asia.
