These are the daily tech headlines for Monday, March 2, 2026. I'm Sarah Lane. Apple announced a new mid range iPhone 7.17e with double the base storage of the previous model at 256 gigabytes and MagSafe Qi 2 wireless charging at 15 watts. The price stays at $599. Apple also announced a new iPad Air with an M4 desktop processor and support for Wi Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Base RAM increases from 8 to 12 gigs, but there's no price increase starting at $599 for the 11 inch and and 799 for the 13 inch. Both the iPhone and the iPad get the upgraded C1X cellular modem and will be available to order on Wednesday, March 4th. Shipping March 11th. On Monday, the US Supreme Court declined to review a case over whether art created by AI can be copyrighted under US law. In 2018, Stephen Thaler applied for a federal copyright of a piece of art created by AI, which which was rejected by the Copyright Office in 2022, finding that creative works require a human author to be Copyright eligible. In 2023, a Washington federal judge upheld the Copyright Office's decision, and in 2025, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit also affirmed that ruling. Iranian missile and drone strikes on the United Arab Emirates have damaged an AWS data center in dubai, knocking around 60 services offline in the ME Central 1 region and affecting customers in the UAE and Bahrain said objects caused fire and power shutdowns at One Availability zone, with recovery expected to take at least a day as cooling and power systems are repaired and safety checks are completed. At Mobile World Congress, aka MWC 2026, Qualcomm introduced its first Wi Fi 8 chip, the FastConnect 8800, promising more than 10 gigabit per second peak speeds, Bluetooth 7.0 support and on device AI for smarter connectivity. The company also said it's working with more than 50 partners to prepare for AI native 6G networks launching in 2029. Qualcomm also announced its X105.5G modem with 14.8 gigabit per second peak speeds and a Snapdragon Wear Elite chip for wearables with 30% longer battery life. Also at MWC, Motorola announced a long term partnership with graphene OS to launch a future smartphone with the privacy focused DE Googled Android OS pre installed, marking the first expansion beyond Google Pixel devices. The companies say they'll also bring select graphene OS security features to other Motorola phones, though no specific device or timeline was offered. Current Motorola hardware doesn't meet graphene OS requirements, so a higher end model could be in development. Nvidia announced it's investing $4 billion into photonics firms Lumentum and Coherence, with 2 billion going to each to secure optical and laser technologies critical for AI data centers. The multi year deals include large purchase commitments and future capacity rights for for advanced silicon photonics and networking components. CEO Jensen Wang said that the partnerships will support next gen Gigawatt AI Infrastructure X launched a new paid partnership label that creators can toggle on posts to indicate sponsored content replacing hashtags like hashtag ad and helping to stay in compliance with US advertising rules. The label can be applied during or after posting, meant to improve transparency and content authenticity. Broader changes at X are designed to better support creators and reduce misleading or AI generated interactions. And finally today ByteDance's Pico unveiled its Project Swan headset featuring 4K micro OLED displays, a dual chip setup with a custom CO processor for computer vision, and roughly doubled the CPU and GPU performance of current Pico and Meta headsets. Project Swann supports hand and eye tracking with latency around 12 milliseconds and will run Pico OS 6 with Picospatial Engine, which allows 2D and 3D apps to run together in mixed reality. Developers can access the system via picospatial SDK and Web Spatial in Open beta.
