Title: Apple Is Considering Using AI From Anthropic Or OpenAI For A New Siri
Hosts: Sarah Lane, Rob Dunewood, and Tom Merritt
Release Date: July 1, 2025
Timestamp: [02:14]
Rob Dunwood opens the episode with a significant update on Apple's approach to enhancing Siri. Traditionally reliant on its proprietary AI models, Apple is now contemplating integrating large language models (LLMs) from industry leaders Anthropic and OpenAI. This marks a notable deviation from Apple’s established strategy of exclusive in-house development.
Testing on Apple’s CL: Apple is currently in the preliminary stages, testing these external LLMs on its hardware infrastructure. Dunwood emphasizes, “This is early stage with no final decision,” highlighting the cautious approach Apple is taking amidst evolving AI landscapes.
Executive Changes: The initiative follows internal delays in Series AI advancements projected until 2026. Notably, Mike Rockwell has taken the helm of series development, signaling a potential pivot in leadership and vision within Apple’s AI projects.
WWDC Insights: At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple showcased incremental AI improvements rather than groundbreaking innovations. However, the company is broadening its ecosystem by making its foundational AI models accessible to third-party developers, alongside offering OpenAI’s code completion tools. Dunwood remarks, “Apple is balancing between fostering developer innovation and integrating advanced AI capabilities.”

The episode delves into a landmark decision by the US Senate, where a decisive 99:1 vote was cast to eliminate a decade-long federal moratorium on state-level AI regulation. This move dismantles previous restrictions that prevented states from enacting their own protective laws regarding AI.
Key Players: Senator Marsha Blackburn spearheaded the amendment, initially negotiating a five-year ban with Senator Ted Cruz before retracting her support. Dunwood notes, “Blackburn argued that states shouldn’t wait for federal legislation to protect their citizens from AI’s rapid advancements.”
Implications for AI Companies: Major players like Google and OpenAI have expressed support for federal oversight, believing it would create a standardized regulatory environment. The removal of the moratorium opens the door for states to implement diverse AI regulations, potentially leading to a fragmented regulatory landscape.

Cloudflare introduces a groundbreaking pay-per-crawl marketplace designed to recalibrate the current imbalance where AI firms disproportionately benefit from scraped online content.
Monetization for Publishers: Website owners can now monetize their content by setting rates for AI access, offering options for free scraping or default blocking of AI crawlers. Dunwood explains, “This system empowers publishers to control and gain revenue from the AI entities that utilize their data.”
Future Prospects: The success of this initiative hinges on widespread adoption among both publishers and AI companies. If embraced, it could pave the way for an agentic future where AI models compensate content creators appropriately.
