Amazon Web Services has committed an additional $10 billion to Ohio, bringing the total investment in the state to nearly $24 billion by 2030. The investment plans will fund new data centers containing computer servers, storage drives, networking equipment and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning. In June 2023, AWS said it would invest $7.8 billion by the end of 2029 to expand its data center operations in central Ohio. That was on top of $6 billion already invested through 2022. This new investment brings AWS's total commitment in Ohio to $23.8 billion by 2030. DJI, the world's largest drone maker, could automatically be banned in the United States in one year unless the Chinese based company can convince an appropriate national security Agency to its products do not pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States. The National Defense Authorization act sets a one year timer instructing the FCC to add DGI's gear to its covered list under the Secure and Trusted Communication Networks Act. Not only does this list keep that gear from running on US Networks, but it also bars the FCC from authorizing their internal radios for use in the US effectively blocking all imports for the 10th day of shipments. OpenAI started allowing users to call ChatGPT over WhatsApp for up to 15 minutes per month using 1,800chatgpt for free. The phone number is built using OpenAI's real time API, and the WhatsApp feature is powered by GPT4O mini through an integration with the WhatsApp API. OpenAI sees this feature as an important stepping stone for newcomers to AI, since the service represents a simplified version of ChatGPT compared to its web based counterpart and offers a low cost way to try it out through familiar channels. Instagram is teasing a new generative AI editing feature that will allow users to quote change nearly any aspect of your videos. Instagram head Adam Mosseri says the new text, slated to come out next year, uses Meta's moviegen AI model to provide creators with more tools to help transform their content and bring their ideas to life without extensive video editing or manipulation skills, utilizing a simple text prompt to make adjustments. Meta hasn't announced when moviegen will be available, but Instagram is the first platform the company has confirmed will utilize the text to video model Bloomberg News is reporting that Tesla is courting multiple Texas cities, including Austin, to test its long promised robo taxi service. A Tesla employee has apparently been in touch with Austin officials since May and recently held an event in December to train first responders on how to best work with Tesla's autonomous vehicle technology. The employee told the city that Austin is obviously on our roadmap, but has not yet been decided where we will deploy first as we have many options available. The U.S. cybersecurity agency issued an advisory Wednesday urging senior politicians and high ranking officials to lock down their devices amid the ongoing Chinese breaches of at least eight major telecom providers. CISA said that the highly targeted officials, including those in government, should enable advanced security features such as Apple's lockdown mode, which limits the functionality on iPhones, to limit the phone's overall attack surface. The agency also recommends that officials switch to end to end encrypted messaging apps like Signal and finally SanDisk, the flash memory company currently owned by Western Digital and spells its name with a capital S and capital D in the logo, is rebranding and now spells sandisk with all capital letters. The rebranding of the logo, which has been used since 1995, comes ahead of a spinoff from Western Digital planned for next year. We should note that SanDisk is also using new branding with just a capital S. It looks like the company wants to make sure it has all of its bases covered. Daily Tech Headlines: Apple Negotiates AI Integrations for Chinese iPhones and More Hosted by Tom Merritt on "Daily Tech Headlines" | Release Date: December 19, 2024
Apple is actively seeking partnerships with Tencent and ByteDance to incorporate their artificial intelligence (AI) models into iPhones sold within the Chinese market. This strategic move comes after Apple's recent rollout of OpenAI's ChatGPT integration with Siri, which unfortunately remains unavailable in China due to regional restrictions. As Apple's market share in China faces challenges, the company is keen on leveraging local AI expertise to enhance its device functionalities.
Rob Dunwood, the host, elaborated on this development:
"Apple rolled out OpenAI's ChatGPT integration with Siri earlier this month, but ChatGPT is not available in China, forcing Apple to seek local partners for its AI features at a time when its market share in the country is declining." ([01:35])
While discussions with Tencent and ByteDance are still in the nascent stages, previous negotiations with Baidu encountered hurdles. Technical disagreements, particularly concerning the use of iPhone user data for training AI models, have posed significant setbacks. These disputes highlight the intricate balance between leveraging user data for AI advancements and maintaining stringent privacy standards.
Microsoft is enhancing its live translation capabilities within Windows 11, targeting both Intel and AMD-based Copilot Plus PCs. The Dev channel insiders can now access real-time English subtitles for audio content in over 44 languages, with an initial rollout on Qualcomm-powered devices.
Dunwood highlighted:
"Windows 11 will automatically generate English captions in real time, seamlessly integrating with various audio sources, including YouTube videos, live video conferences, and recordings." ([02:15])
This feature leverages Microsoft's robust AI infrastructure to provide users with accessible and immediate translations, thereby bridging language barriers in diverse digital interactions.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an additional investment of $10 billion in Ohio, culminating in a total commitment nearing $24 billion by 2030. These funds are earmarked for establishing new data centers equipped with computer servers, storage drives, networking equipment, and other essential technology infrastructure pivotal for cloud computing, AI, and machine learning initiatives.
Rob Dunwood noted:
"In June 2023, AWS committed $7.8 billion by the end of 2029 to expand its data center operations in central Ohio, building upon the $6 billion already invested through 2022." ([03:45])
This substantial investment underscores AWS's strategic focus on scaling its operations to meet the burgeoning demand for advanced digital services and innovations.
DJI, the global leader in drone manufacturing, may face an automatic ban in the United States within the next year unless it can assure national security agencies of its products' safety. Under the National Defense Authorization Act, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is mandated to include DJI’s equipment in the covered list of the Secure and Trusted Communication Networks Act.
Dunwood explained:
"This list not only prevents DJI's gear from operating on U.S. networks but also restricts the FCC from approving their internal radios for use, effectively halting all imports by the 10th day of shipments." ([04:30])
The impending ban is a significant blow to DJI, compelling the company to navigate complex regulatory landscapes to maintain its market presence in the U.S.
OpenAI has launched a feature enabling users to access ChatGPT through WhatsApp for up to 15 minutes per month free of charge. This integration utilizes the GPT4O mini model via the WhatsApp API, offering a more accessible entry point for users to engage with AI technologies.
Rob Dunwood shared:
"OpenAI sees this feature as an important stepping stone for newcomers to AI, providing a simplified and cost-effective method to experience ChatGPT through familiar communication channels." ([05:10])
This initiative is poised to democratize AI access, allowing a broader audience to benefit from conversational AI without the barriers of technical setup or subscription fees.
Instagram is set to unveil a new generative AI editing feature next year, allowing users to alter virtually any aspect of their videos through simple text prompts. Leveraging Meta's moviegen AI model, this tool aims to empower creators by simplifying video editing, eliminating the need for advanced skills.
Dunwood reported:
"Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, stated that the new feature will provide creators with more tools to transform their content and bring their ideas to life effortlessly." ([05:50])
As the first platform to adopt this text-to-video model, Instagram is pioneering the integration of generative AI in social media content creation, potentially revolutionizing how users interact with and produce multimedia content.
Tesla is actively courting multiple cities in Texas, including Austin, as potential testing grounds for its much-anticipated robo taxi service. Since May, a Tesla representative has been in discussions with Austin officials and recently conducted training sessions for first responders to familiarize them with Tesla's autonomous vehicle technology.
Rob Dunwood noted:
"A Tesla employee informed the city that Austin is on our roadmap, but the exact deployment location remains undecided as we evaluate multiple options." ([06:30])
This initiative marks a significant step towards realizing Tesla's vision of autonomous transportation, with Texas serving as a strategic locale for piloting this cutting-edge service.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued a critical advisory urging senior politicians and high-ranking officials to secure their devices in response to ongoing Chinese cybersecurity breaches targeting at least eight major telecom providers. The agency recommends activating Apple's lockdown mode, which restricts iPhone functionalities to minimize vulnerabilities, and transitioning to end-to-end encrypted messaging apps like Signal.
Dunwood emphasized:
"CISA advises that enabling advanced security features and adopting secure communication platforms are essential measures to protect against sophisticated cyber threats." ([07:00])
This advisory highlights the escalating cyber threats and the imperative for governmental figures to adopt stringent security protocols to safeguard sensitive information.
SanDisk, the renowned flash memory company now under Western Digital, is undergoing a rebranding phase, opting to stylize its name as "sandisk" with capital letters. This change precedes the planned spin-off from Western Digital set for next year.
Rob Dunwood mentioned:
"The rebranding ensures consistency as SanDisk prepares for its independent operations, reflecting a fresh identity in the competitive tech landscape." ([07:30])
This strategic rebranding is aimed at reinforcing SanDisk's market identity and preparing the company for its forthcoming autonomy.
